BEAT-DOWN IN LONDON: FLYERS 4 NYI 0
Ken Morrow on Tonight’s Game

After five days of happy recaps, rookie game victories and a win for the big club on Tuesday, the Islanders had their first stinker of camp, losing 4-0 to Philadelphia tonight in London, Onatrio. The Flyers’ goals were from front-line forwards Mike Richards, Joffrey Lupul, Mike Knuble and Jeff Carter. The official team site has the game story.

Dynasty and Miracle defenseman Ken Morrow, the Islanders’ Director of Pro Scouting, graciously kept his commitment to call Point Blank after the game. His comments…

On the bright side…“Not really a whole lot of positives you could take from the game. It’s a 4-0 loss, we were out-shot and that pretty much tells the tale. Only 21 shots on goal. That’s not good. We’ve had a great camp so far. Everyone’s bought into Scott’s system and the energy has been outstanding. This is a setback, but it’s really just the only one of camp. We fell into some bad habits. We’ll have to rebound Saturday.”

Standouts: “Michael Haley continues to be one of the good stories of camp. He’s come far in short time. He was rewarded with a spot in the lineup tonight and he made the most of it. He took on two tough customers on Philly and in my view won both fights.

“I thought our best forward was Jesse Joensuu. Really strong on the puck and made smart plays. He’s still so new to the North American game but acquitted himself real well tonight. I’m anxious to see him play some more.”

On his specialty, the D: “As a whole, I like our defense more than last season. The mobility is much better. We’ve added a pro like Mark Streit. You look at the depth guys like Jamie Fraser, who can really skate. There’s also Brett Skinner, with some strong skill and mobility. Jack Hillen has been a real find. We really like our defense.”

Outlook: “The only positive to come out of this game is that it hammers home the message that Scott’s system works. You have to have sustained pressure to force turnovers and make plays. Give credit to Philly: they played some of their horses and they all had good games. Four of them got on the scoreboard. For us, it’s back to work.”
