“NHL HOCKEY THIS WEEK” ON 1050 ESPN RADIO
Saturday @ 10:30 am, co-hosts: La Greca and Botta
by B.D. Gallof
Details are just through the pipeline on a new weekly one-hour hockey show on 1050 ESPN Radio. Don La Greca and our own Point Blank’s Chris Botta are going to be the co-hosts of “NHL Hockey This Week.” The show debuts this Saturday, October 4 from 10:30 – 11:30 am.
The show, which will cover the Islanders, Devils, Rangers and all of the NHL, will likely have a roving one-hour time slot. According to Botta, it will usually be on one weekend night, one hour before Rangers pre-game shows on 1050 ESPN. The odd start time for the debut is because the Rangers open the season in Europe with a noon EST puck-drop. Whenever possible, the show will have an Islanders presence.
I have heard that the hosts are venturing to have Scott Gordon and Brent Sutter as their guests on Saturday and that they will take calls in the final quarter of the show. Questions and feedback can be placed by Point Blank readers in the Comments area.
Botta told me earlier tonight that La Greca and he have talked about the privilege of co-hosting the only hockey show of its kind on all-sports terrestrial radio in New York. “Don and I feel a bit of a responsibility to the hockey fans to get this right, and to 1050 and the sponsors to prove more hockey talk belongs on the radio,” said Botta. “It may take us a little while to get our legs, but we’re going to make the most of every hour we get.”
In the proverbial desert of all things hockey on the regular sports landscape, you have to give credit to 1050 ESPN Radio for having the guts and vision to give a hockey show a try. Stay tuned to Point Blank for more details, including a show schedule beyond this Saturday.

Wow, this is great news. This will be welcome relief from the endless drone on subjects such as who will be the raiders third running back and other football minutiae that is constantly crammed down our throats in the fall. Can’t wait to hear the first installment!

Thank you CB! This blog is the only way I can get real Islander and Hockey news(not even on TSN.ca). Now you have a radio show dedicated to simply hockey!!! You and Donny Pucks should have a great time discussing games and hockey stories past and present. Is the show going to be centered around the local teams or is it all things hockey? I hope you guys have free reign to discuss anything just like the other guys on the network. Good Luck and a big thanks for keeping us thirsty for more info of our favorite team.

Thats good news. At least we will be able to listen to intelligent commentary on hockey as opposed to people like Chris Russo who knew one thing about hockey – that he hated the Islanders. But then its like a lot of things in this town. The Rangers sell papers/airtime the Islanders don’t. Hence the coverage will always be totally slewed. Actually thats probably not a bad thing – ask A-Rod!

Great news! Glad to hear the powers-that- be at 1050 are giving Don a show featuring a subject he truly loves and is very knowledgable about. CB you will make a wonderful co-host and I am so glad you are getting this opportunity. I will be tuning in.

This simply rules. I have (and continue to so so), listen to sports radio all year round, waitng and waitng and waiting for an ounce or shred of hockey news or talk, and it never comes… nor does it ever take any presidence over ANYTHING! I’ve been saying to myself that if the radio would at least devote some time to hockey on a regular basis, this can only help with the interest in our beloved sport. Thank you Chris, thank you Don. Thank you. I will be tuning in.
