AD TIDINGS
MSG+ takes out Islanders broadcast ad in Newsday

1:55 pm, The Rock - While we’ve had some things to say about MSG+ lately, it did the heart good to turn to page A73 in Long Island’s newspaper today. There it was, a half-page, 4-color ad from The Plus promoting tonight’s Islanders-Devils broadcast.

There is the headline “THEIR GUTS. YOUR GLORY.” and a large photo of Sean Bergenheim celebrating a goal. There’s even some small print directing fans to the broadcast on MSG Plus 2, which according to the ad is on iO TV channel 79. If you want to hear Howie, Billy and C.J., that’s the broadcast to click the remote on. If you want your HD, I’m told you’ll have to watch the Doc-Chico version on MSG Plus.

This ad may not seem like a big deal, but it sorta is. In the old days of FSNY and even SportsChannel before that, you didn’t see a lot of marketing of the Islanders’ television broadcasts.

Also, consider this: an advertising industry expert estimated the ad buy of a half-page, 4-color ad in Newsday at around $25,000. You can say that MSG is smart to promote its own broadcasts, just as it did with a full-page ad with Chris Drury in today’s Post. That’s true. But it is also money MSG does not have to spend.

Do remember that they’re advertising in Newsday. Cablevision owns both — so all that’s happening is there’s money going from one division of the company to another,

Great point, Don. I was shocked to see three Isles stories in today’s Newsday, but it does make more sense for the paper to run ads and have more coverage of teams its mother company puts on TV.

I’m a big believer that the more media coverage there is on a team, the bigger a story people perceive the team to be. The media controls interest in teams perhaps a little too much.

I saw that in the paper as well. And you are sooooo right about the years past and marketing this team, or lack of.
And Ouch that much for the adds?..geez!
It’s really to bad ESPN doesn’t grab on more then they do. I know there’s to much with NBA and Football, and hockey takes a backseat to those sports. Silly as this may sound it’s to bad they couldn’t change hockey season to another time.

Maybe an ad in the “HELP WANTED SECTION” For a legit GM & OWNER Is what really is needed

Don K, right on! Botta knows it, so he must think we’re stupid not to see it.

KillerC, you have a legit owner. A legit owner that has lost a lot of money. A legit owner that if it was not for his desire to keep the Islanders on the island, there would be no New York Islnaders today.

If it wasn’t for the potential Lighthouse project (that his development company will get the contract for) he would dumped this team along time ago!

Yup, I’m well aware Cablevision owns Newsday and have written about it plenty of times. Doesn’t change the fact it’s a good thing they did…CB

Who has some knowledge in the TV industry. How come the Isles broadcast can’t be on MSG+ in the long island area and the Devils broadcast be on MSG+ in the Jersey area. It bothers me that on Long Island, the Isles play 2nd fiddle to a team out of state.

Why the radio change. There are fans of this team that do not live on the Island. I thought finally Bloomberg radio a powerful signal. Now we are back to some station out in the middle of nowhere. Another dumb move by this organization

The reason being both teams play on the same channel. So the home team has the HD feed. MSG2 isn’t in HD. If the Rangers weren’t playing tonight the Isles feed would be in HD on MSG. Or vice versa

  11. 11 Islanders 360

Unbelievable, but unsurprising, that we won’t get an HD feed with Howie and Billy. Last year the non-HD broadcasts on the overflow channel were awful picture quality. Worse than a traditional SD broadcast. I may need to endure Chico and Doc tonight…awful.

What is the AM channel the games are on, I will be coming home from work and listenting. Hopefully be able to hear some play by play in btw the static

  13. 13 TuxTax

660 for devils broadcast and 94.3FM for the Isles broadcast

  14. 14 Dmarie

Rich.. the station that’s airing the game is WFAN 660

  15. 15 Darren

Isles should really make a move to their own channel. Enough of this sharing with the Devils and Dirty Rangers! They should make a move towards SNY!

  16. 16 TuxTax

As much as I would love to see the Isles go to SNY. They cant give up the guaranteed millions that they are getting from MSG for broadcasting rights. Unless the Isles have a bountiful future then we are stuck with MSG. Sadly.

    Chris,
Perhaps you can use this link for B.D. Gallof’s blog…

I live in CT and I have Dish network and I get MSG+ but they black out the live feed of the games so I end up DVRing the game at 2 am and watching the next day. I looked into getting CenterIce to watch but those are blacked out too b/c I live in the local area so I am guessing they don’t have broadcasting rights. So anyone in CT is in a black hole for live Isles games. Any info as to why this is and any suggestion as to how to get around it? This is so annoying especially since I will pay the money to be able to watch the games!

It’s 7:04 and still no game on MSG plus 2 on channel 79 as advertised.

    Chico is yelling on 72

  20. 20 Mike from Queens

The ad was wrong. MSG 2 is channel 79. MSG+ 2 is channel 81 on Verizon.

  21. 21 EdTurner

No, the ad was write for Cablevision.
Even the show on the screen says hockey from 7 - 9:30 but hey, it’s the Islanders and Dolan does not own the Islanders.

7:10 and still no Howie Rose on channel 79
