BREAKING NEWS: Bailey leaves practice early
11:50 am – Availability for opener very much in doubt

by admin on October 9th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

11:50 am - 2008 first round pick Josh Bailey left the ice at practice this morning just ten minutes into the workout. Bailey, who missed time earlier in camp but played Monday in Florida and survived Tuesday’s cuts, is believed to have some sort of groin/hip flexor/abdominal injury (the Islanders are not providing injury updates).

Plans seemed to be heading in the direction of Bailey playing in the season opener in New Jersey tomorrow night. Now that appears highly unlikely.

That’s not good. Does Thompson get the call tomorrow?

You know, there seems to be a pattern here with the same injuries….

How has the team not noticed and rather, how in the world does the strength and conditioning staff still have a job?

It’s not like this is happening to just the older and injury prone players. It’s happening to everyone.

    great. just great

This injury bug is getting old, really fast.

  6. avatar jaxx says:

All these injuries are not the direct result of the strength and conditioning coach. Campoli and Sutton got hurt during the game. Campoli on a hard check and sutton broke his finger. Sillinger & Guerin are recovering from surgery in the offseason. So explain too me how it’s the staffs fault again? Tambs & Bergy missed a couple of days earlier, but that happens every where. So again explain for me please.

Not just this year. Yes, I realize some of these injuries happen during the game. But the one’s that don’t – the one’s that happen in practice – are all hip and groin injuries.

And after Gordon spoke so highly of him last night. sad news.

  9. avatar Peter Rogers says:

And by the way did we see that Filatov has been returned to the minors? In fact according to THN the only 2 of the top 9 that are likely to stay are Stamkos and Doughty.

  10. avatar Marty says:

    who gets the call?

  11. avatar Chris TMC says:

Thats sad news, I as really looking forward to seeing him, too- as was every other Islanders fan I know! But if he doesnt play, he will just heal up and then play a great season for his Windsor team. Josh isnt going to lose out no matter which way it goes.

    CALL UP FRITZY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not sure if this blog is informative or depressing?
Everyday there seems to such uplifting news about this team!

  14. avatar admin says:

sorry, Darren. I won’t report next time. Just kidding! I thought Thompson was playing Friday anyway. Now I’m 100% sure of it. Posting an update from practice in the next hour. Thanks everyone…CB

  15. avatar IslesFan in Bkny says:

That’s definitely not good news for a kid but it might be a chance for Comeau to get into the line up.

  16. avatar LIJames says:

Nate Thompson is already with the big club, makes sense to change a center for a center, no? Just might mean Skinner is on his way back to the Island for now.

  17. avatar jaxx says:

It should be Fritz coming up.

  18. avatar 13MoreYears says:

Bailey has a groin injury? Maybe I can fill in for him while he’s gone.

    Regards,
    Shawn Bates

  19. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

hahaha good one 13MoreYears… haha. Hopefully this doesnt ruin his “tryout.”

  20. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

this better mean that comeau and not thompson play tomorrow night.

  21. avatar Paul says:

I am not suprised by all the injuries due to Gordons new system and practices. Now our kids are going down and the silence continues!

  22. avatar Darren says:

Well, hopefully in the next hour you’ll have BETTER news for us Chris =)

If Thompson is up and practicing with the big boys ~cough~ today. You can bet he’ll be on the ice tomorrow!

  23. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

    agree with you darren

  24. avatar The Commodore says:

    LOL to 13 more years.

    i also concur- very depressing.

but IT’S OUR CUP, so it will work out.

  25. avatar Buddyhackit9 says:

Funny how some people blame Gordon and his new systems on injuries. Naturally the majority of injuries that occur in practice will be hip or groin, because you are not taking huge hits, etc, but you are still skating hard, which leads to stress on the groin and hip flexors. I think it is a combination of guys not being ready for the season and the up-tempo style that Gordon is trying to implement. But you will always have groin and hip flexors come up… it is part of the game.

  26. avatar Darren says:

The question now is… is Thompson up here to stay?? This should get interesting!

    -13MoreYears… great name!

  27. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

I want to see what Thompson has to offer… that is for sure. If he is like what everyone has been saying… that the fans will love him, well then thats a good thing. A little bit of sandpaper in the line-up.

However, we have an abundance of quintessential Third and Fourth liners and NATE THOMPSON will be nothing more…

If its a juggle between Comeau or Thompson getting ice time… I’m almost positive everyone would vote Comeau. We know what he has to offer, as he has shown glimpses of it through the stretch last season. I have been on the Comeau boat even before he came up last season. He can be a great, skilled power forward. He has the size, the skill and the ice slowed down for him last season. He just needs the time. His positioning was great last season, and he hustled like Bergenheim. Who knows if hes really on the outside looking in, but if he is I will truly be upset.

I also don’t get how Thompson just automatically gets a spot on the roster, even if he played under Gordon and is a center, considering he only has played in four nhl games. grrrrr

  28. avatar John says:

    Hilbertsnipe,

It’s quite simple why Thompson gets a spot on the team. Gordon knows him, has run this team through a full preseason, and thinks we can contribute something that the team needs. It’s that simple. I hope he replaces Hilbert. The guys can’t score or hit. This guy can kill those same penalties, put up the same points, and fight and hit. It’s a simple upgrade. Plus he can play all forward lines.

  29. avatar Pete says:

Makes you wonder if they knew about this injury before Thompson was picked up.
