CHECKLIST: How 08-09 Will Be Judged
11:00 am – The List grows with your contributions
UPDATED 11:00 am - Welcome to Point Blank’s CHECKLIST, the interactive blogitorial that you co-author!
You’re off to a great start with more than 60 posts (and only a handful that didn’t keep to the guidelines. Many of your best have been added below.
Out of respect to our friends of the Jewish faith, we will keep the Checklist active through Friday around noon. Thanks for being a part of it…CB
****
Here’s how it works. You and I build this list together. I start it off with a handful of contributions. You use the Comments section to include your thoughts. For the Checklist, one or two-liners work better than sermons. Stick to the subject at hand and make your contribution. Rants on my notes or anything off-topic or off-color will be “edited.”
After about 24 hours of your Comments, I will post an edited master list as our lead story. We’ll make sure Garth Snow, Scott Gordon and team prez Chris Dey get copies. At the end of the season we will review to see how we – and more importantly, the Islanders – did.
Here’s the subject of the list, followed by my starter kit. Then it’s on to you.
How The 08-9 Islanders Season Will Be Judged
- The big one: Management’s dedication to its stated plan to rebuild. Any flinch without genuine cause would truly be a farce.
- A power play that doesn’t have to finish in the top 15 in the NHL, but at least look like it has a clue.
- The coaching staff’s success in defining what kind of player Jeff Tambellini is.
- Trent Hunter getting in better position to make plays rather than ram opponents into the boards.
- Scott Gordon keeping his cool and not losing sight of what he was brought here to do.
- The ascent of a genuine No. 2 goaltender, whether it’s Joey McDonald or someone else.
- Consistently tenacious play from Sean Bergenheim.
- Shot-blocking: balls and commitment required, not great talent.
- Garth Snow making all the right moves before the trade deadline, whether he’s buying or selling.
And now, some of your additions…
Rick DiPietro starting and finishing the season with his health intact.
Tangible progress on the Lighthouse Project.
Proper handling of the development of Josh Bailey.
A culture of players sticking up for each other.
Making decisions on the players with one year left on their contracts while building chemistry for the future.
A commitment to Scott Gordon’s system.
Beating the crosstown rivals and winning the Metro Cup (if it’s back this year)
Develop an identity.
Keeping the kids focused.
Challenging for a playoff spot.
Re-invent Islanders tradition by not dwelling on the past but by creating a future
No panic attacks – no quick fixes.
Continue to work with MSG Network on maximized TV coverage.
Keeping Bridgeport’s system linked to the Islanders’.
Make sure every team hates playing the NY Islanders.

- Starting goalie staying healthy to finish the season.
-
It all begins and ends with progress on the Lighthouse front. Sadly while excited for the season off ice issues have begun to creep into my thoughts. Nothing else matters without tangible Lighthouse progress. That and Tambellini somehow turning himself into Shawn Mceachern redux. tee-hee.
-
Yeah…It’s all about the Lighthouse project. That project tanks and it’s over!
-
Comeau and Okposo become top 6 forwards and join DP as the foundation of a team being built into the first real contender we have had here since Volek’s “one timer heard round the world”
-
Health… thats what I think is the biggest key to this season. And if the Isles players are more injury-prone and susceptible to injuries, it is important to look at what might be the cause(s): Poor conditoning on part of the players? The workout regimen itself? Poor facilities t hat do not lead to optimal workouts? Ice problems?
-
-The development process of Josh Bailey is properly handled.
-Jon Sim is an important presence on this team
-If our defenders fail to stay healthy this year, appropriate and well thought-out replacements are found and/or put in their place. -
Will Rick Dipietro stay Healthy for the season !!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Garth Snow should be Judged on this Season?
-
Tell the Islander Organization how thankful us Islander fans are for having “Chris Botta’s Point Blank !BooYa!!
-
With so many guys on one year contracts, finding the right young guys and promoting the right chemistry to fill those empty spots for next year is the absolute most important thing.
-
Bring respect back to the Island.
-
Staying competitive while building towards the future by making smart trades and not rushing players (ie: Bailey)
-
Rick Dipietro staying healthy for a full season while demonstrating he’s the top five goaltender that his athleticism says he can be.
-
How well the players stay committed to the system Gordon envisions.
-
Beating the cross town rivals consistently and once again winning the metro challenge.
-
Develop an identity. Such as a tough gritty team that plays an up-tempo, high pressure game (just an example). Something to identify the squad with. Even if wins are sometimes hard to come by the team’s style should be identifable and uncomfortable for other teams.
-
1. Become more of an offensive attack team (quality scoring chances)
2. Tightening up defensively (less shots allowed)
3. Execute consistantly on special teams1 + 2 + 3 = happy fans in Islander Country
-
Be playoff contenders. Isles don’t have to make the playoffs, but we should still have playoff hopes for a little while after the all-star break. I dont want to loose hope in late December.
-
A pk unit with a good system in place and takes pressure off DP.
-
Making sure the “kids” stay focused and stay consistent. More importantly, they GROW into a cohesive unit.
-
Whether or not our defense can clear out the traffic in front of the net. That seems to be DP’s biggest weakness.
-
Have a backup goaltender with a winning record (That means over .500).
Last goalie to that was our general manager in 2002.
-
Continue the growth of okposo, Comeau, bailey, nielson, tamby, and bergy. Continue to build a foundation of youth. DP needs to get through a WHOLE season with 60+ starts.
-
- Healthy DP
- Youth development
- Lighthouse Development
- More fans
- Respectability
- A pre-game show
- Better TV contract
- Players produce with what is expected of them (Vets and Kids)
- Playoffs
- Stanley Cup -

The last goalie to do that here was Dubie. In 06-07 he was 4-1 and FWIW he was .500 last season. -
In 06-07 dubie was the third string goalie for most of the year, I think backup goalie for this team is largely irrelevant as long as there is some semblence of competance.
I think this season will be defined by the health of Ricky Dipietro.
What I want to see from this season: I want this team to be the harder working team in every game they play.
-
Moving away from a glut of 3rd and 4th liner projects to a more well balanced team. No more building a team through the waiver wire.
-
Reinvent the Islander tradition by not dwelling on the past(both bad and good) but creating our own future of an exciting hockey culture on Long Island.
-
Prove to the so-called “experts” once again that you don’t belong in the bottom half of the conference (as they predicted 2 years ago and were wrong)
-
~Consistent effort!
Too many times in the past they didnt show up until the waning minutes of the third period.
~Identity
~No Panic Attacks—if things get rocky with one of the newbies–don’t look for a quick fix.
~Don’t let the inmates run the asylum. We have watched too many things happen because of “dissension” in the lockerroom. It’s time to man up and deal. -
Bring up Mitch Fritz!!!!!!
Hedman or Taveras will be our future star
Bring up Mitch Fritz!!!!!
Lighthouse or bust
Bring up Mitch Fritz!!!!! -
-lighthouse(stability) -youth (speed) -healthy DP (13 years) -keep Mr.Wang away from hockey operations.
-
The veterans mesh well with the youngsters to form a cohesive unit.

SYSTEM MUST WORK Gordon and players must stay with the system
specially after the inmates er players let management know they lost faith.
DiPietro must stay healthy (play less) and finish the season.
At least two more young players develop into regulars. -
Let’s be honest here for a moment. Success for this Islanders team is not going to happen. This is coming from an absolute diehard. Here is my theory. What Garth has done is built an absolute flop, a team that cannot possibly succeed in its current state. Yes kids like Bailey, Okposo, Bergy, Comeau, and Tambs will develop, but the reality is that they are all still very raw talent (and if Tambs doesn’t get on the ball, he could be on the outside looking in very soon). My hope is that, by not signing anyone of significance over the summer to improve the team, Garth has one name in mind: Jonathan Tavares. Thats right, and its actually a brilliant plan. Allow your young guns to develop under older washed-up leaders (see Bill Guerin and Doug Weight) while simultaneously building a guaranteed loser that will lock up the first pick in the 2009 entry draft. Shear brilliance.
So, what can the Islanders do to succeed you ask?? Ironically, if the Islanders want to truly succeed in the future, they need to lose this year. They need to truly crap the bed to lock up last place in the league against the stiff competition that will be provided by teams like the Thrashers and the Kings.
I am an Islanders fan through and through and the reality of this situation is that, unless the Islanders lock up Tavares, the future still looks pretty grim.
-
WE are all Die Hards!
what will be will be.
(regards to finish in standingsThough as a “Die hard” You root for the team to win… never to lose!
we spoke our minds over the last few days!
Now its time to show a united front as
fans! win or lose! Why throw them under the bus before game#1
Stranger things in Sports have happened!
I’m sorry for now I gotta show love for the game & The Island baby…
Lets go Islanders..nothing wrong with a little us against the world…
p.s. “Diehards” never give up no matter what the odds..
-
I am a die hard and I’m definitely never going to root for them to lose. But, I also don’t have my head in the clouds about the situation this team is in. Im simply stating that perhaps the best thing to come from this season would be a last place finish and the biggest prize in the 2009 draft (Tavares), which would essentially guarantee us future success. The kid is amazing…try to tell me you wouldnt sacrifice one season a first round playoff exit (as per usual) for a chance at that kid.
Criticism demands results. Undying support for mediocrity will simply lead to more mediocrity as we have seen over the past 8 years.
-
Carry a HW (Fritz or Rechlicz), make Tamby produce or bench him, trade Hilbert.
-
1)Comeau-Comrie-Okposo as a line
2)Tamby becomes the goal scorer he was in the AHL
3)RICK DIPIETRO
4)Weight and Guerin lead by both example and controlling the locker room
5)Power playComeau must play big minutes, all this talk of trying to win over Gordon is disheartening. Comeau might just be a better all-around player than Okposo
-
sim to have the breakout pest season he’s ready to have. time to show he has heart and dedication to the isles!
-
Rebuild mode? Doesn’t a team in “Rebuild Mode” have to have accomplished something? What have the Isles accomplished? “Rebuild Mode” is basically the Islanders admitting that they are anticipating a bad season. They have 9 players int heir lineup over thirty. That doesn’t sound like rebuilding to me. A liottle over a year ago they traded a good chunk of the future for Smyth, now they are “rebuilding”. And people buy into this garbage.
-
1.) KO has to be THE MAN this year.
2.) Ricky has to accept J-Mac will be giving his hips/knees a break 25-30 games. We aren’t making the playoffs. This isn’t a Brodeur situation.
3.) Develop a Power Play. Change the culture of the man advantage for the seasons to come. Imagine if we became a team like Montreal that teams fear to get a call on? It would open up the ice even strength enabling the kids to mature. Teams WILL abuse us this year until Streit and Weight make them pay.
4.) Find a way to get the Isles on SNY. I work for Cablevision Corp. I’m telling you as an insider – the team is not respected. Jersey will get the HD slot every time. It’s a joke.LET’S GO ISLES.
Can’t wait to hear the new “goal” song. -
Half the forwards and 4 of the starting 6 d-man (without injuries) are over 30, but the Isles are rebuilding. Only the Devils in the division have more players over 30.
-
It’s all about the Lighthouse.
If the project gets approved, all is well and then we can then worry about the product on the ice.
If the project is defeated, there will be no product on the ice to worry about.
-
DEDICATION TO REBUILD? BOTTA, YOU REALIZE THIS MEANS DEDICATION TO NOT SPENDING MONEY ON GOOD PLAYERS, RIGHT? THIS MEANS NOT HAVING A DESIRE TO WIN. AND YOU HAVE THE MOXT TO ASK ( AS THE #1 POINT) THAT THEY STICK TO A REBUILD? YOU ARE OUT OF CONTROL!
- WE NEED TO BE AGGRESSIVE.
- DP NEEDS TO STAY IN NET
- GOOD POINT ON HUNTER, THANK YOU.
- KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR GOOD PLAYERS AROUND THIS LEAGUE. REBUILDING IS ABOUT PICKING UP PLAYERS THAT ARE GOOD, THAT CAN HELP US/ DEDICATE ALOT OF TIME TO THIS.
- GORDON- DONT OVERWORK OUT GHUYS IN PRACTICE, COUGHLIN DID THIS WHEN HE CAME TO THE GIANTS, AND WE WERE DECIMATED BY INJURIES. NO “AGAIN” LIKE IN MIRACLE, PLEASE.
- HILBERT, IF HE CANT BE HELPFUL TO THIS TEAM, CUT HIM, HAVING HIM AROUND HAS NOT HELPED US,AND HE SEEMS TO BE MORE OF A LIABILITY THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
- NEW SLOGAN, EXPERIENCE ISLANDERS HOCKEY IS A TERRIBLE SLOGAN. IT SHOULD BE “IT’S OUR CUP.”
- NE GOAL SONG, THANKS FOR NOT ASKING ANY FANS ABOUT THIS AND MAKING A UNILATERLA DECISION. UNACCEPTABLE.
- FRITZY- CALL HIM UP, I WILL PAY TO GO TO GAMES WITH FRITZY IN THE LINESUP. HE IS BIG AND CANT BE THAT BAD, OR MUCH WORSE THAN HILBERT. PLAY HIM, HE DOESNT HAVE TO FIGHT EVERY NIGHT.
THATS IT… GOOD LUCK, SCOTT. THANK YOU CHRIS. -
Botta = Islander apologist. Yeah, we are rebuilding. What exactly are the Isles rebuilding? A ship wreck? The Islanders traded for Ryan Smyth and Garth Snow declared them a contender. A year and half later, according to Botta, the Isles are in full rebuilding mode. Yet, they are dressing the second oldest team in the division. The Islanders are “rebuilding” because all the quality FA’s turned them down the last two seasons. Snow admitted they offered more money to some FA’s only to be turned away. Now they are signing scrubs off of other rosters just to ice a team. They sign this guy from Boston because they don’t have faith in their own prospects. The same thing with Pock. It’s a joke. And then there are people who buy into this garbage.
Just stop lying…. PLEASE!
-
There really isn’t much to say that hasn’t been said here already, but I’ll shoot my thoughts.
1) DP staying healthy depends on how often he’s in Net, stands to reason if you try an play every game and be the team hero (which is not a bad thing
but he puts himself at a higher risk of injury and I think it’s important we get our back-up goalie some serious ice-time too so can develope.2)Keeping Bridgeport players on the same page as the Islanders, also a good move. some people think that since these guys play hockey that they’re ready for NHL level of play, no so.
3)Placing lines together is something I believe will come with time, I think you gotta give these guys a chance to get out there in action for several games to see how well they work. which is why I’m all for a mixed team of youth an Vets, it brings the right mix to the table (in my opinion)
4)As for finishing last place? remains to be seen. I don’t understand how anyone can say that so early. I mean, I certainly don’t expect a run for the Cup, at least not this season, but I expect if all comes to pass that we’ll see a team play well, maybe grab a spot, anything can happen if the boys are hungry enough for it, which I believe they are.
5)All we can do is wait, watch and be hopeful. Well that and lets do what Islander fans do best! Cheer these bad boys on!
-
Witt. Martinek and most of the D must stay healthy Okposo tambellini and bergrnheim must step up and chip in near 20 goal seasons. Oh and DP not run himself into the ground ( and not wear a mike during the All star game )
-
People have to understand when you are rebuilding you’re not going to have a whole team under the age of 25. Most of these vets have ben here before the rebuilding started. They talk about rebuilding because of the kids in the lineup, but you also have to factor in this past draft as well as future picks. Every team that rebuilt had some vets on the teams as well. In the next couple of seasons you will see these “older players” weeded out and more younger players coming in. Give it time. Everybody wants to rebuild but nobody wants to go through the process. Die hard for life LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!!
Oh yeah one more thing. Bring up Mitch Fritz!!!!!!!!!
-
Keep Wang away from anything hockey. Garth, lock your door, tell him what he wants to here, but never ever allow him to meddle with any hockey decisions. Seeing him at the draft table made my blood run cold. Just redo the old barn, forget about the miss guided lighthouse project and stay away!
-
Success means:
* Young forwards emerge as offensive contributors, conscientious backcheckers.
* Defense raises level of physical play and reduces goals against.
* Goalie contributes leadership, stability without trying to carry team.
* Coach gives youth its due, blends in vets, sticks to system, finishes season on strong note.
* Management stays committed to rebuild, trades marketable vets at deadline, and obtains and uses lottery pick.
* Ownership stops trumpeting ticket sales, makes progress on Lighthouse, abjures quick fixes, and recommits itself to continuing rebuild with youth in future seasons. -
1. A hard working team, every night, from all players including the vets. This means you Comrie.
2. Comeau’s development. I don’t care if his “hang on to the puck” style of play doesn’t mesh with Gordons. This kid has talent and Gordon better find a way to make his system work with Comeau’s natural abilities.
-
1. Based on the team’s playoff status at trade deadline and the analysis of the younger players, Garth needs to make the appropriate trades for whichever direction we are heading in at that time. Whether sellers or buyers, if we feel someone’s not pulling their weight, then trade and get a benefit out of it. Don’t loose the farm system to upgrade if we’re buyers.
-
-Replace the training staff with one that will actually develop fitness and strength throughout the team. Too many injuries these last few years prove the training staff has not been up to the task.
-
Last place in the NHL, Tavares or Hedman are not Crosby or Ovechkin but having a home grown superstar to market that scores goals will help u
-
To find a way not to be an embarrassment to themselves and their die hard fans for a change.
-
hy is everyone so eager to follow Snow? He was a mediocre backup goalie 3 years ago and now he’s a top notch GM??I hate to say it but the Islanders are the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals of the NHL, just barely putting a low cost product on yhe ice , yet they still charge NHL seat prices.
-
For me it’s simply if the fans have a legit reason to believe that the 09-10 and beyond versions of the team will be much better than the 08-09 version.
-
DP limiting the mistakes he makes when trying to play the puck too much.
-
The overall goal is to make sure that every team hates playing the New York Islanders and dreads seeing them on their schedule.
-
We come together as a team and stick up for each other. DP doesnt play more than 60 games and we make sure the kids get lots of ice time. Thats the most important thing to give the kids ice time and let them develop into snipers!~!
-
Better Conditioning, Keep the guys in game shape, no more country club practices.
Convince DP to play for his team and not the highlight reel.
and…NO MORE WEIRD MOVES THAT MAKE THE REST OF THE HOCKEY WORLD GO…”WHAT????”
KEEP WANG OUT OF THE CLUBHOUSE. HE IS A BOSS< NOT A BUDDY.
Snow may be a back-up turned GM, but at least he seems to have a plan.
-
Stability, continuity, and commitment from the top of the organization to the bottom.
-
If the team does not succeed, then accept it and respect the ‘older’ players. Offer the veterans on 1 year deals the option to be moved to contenders at the deadline.
-
To me, this is all about rebuilding. Letting the kids play and see where we are as a franchise. 8th place finishes and 1st round eliminations have stagnated this franchise. No expectations this year. Keep building through the draft, and maybe get lucky in the lottery this offseason. I don’t see how they can make the playoffs this season, and I am fine with it.
Part 2, get the lighthouse approved. We need a new building. Period.
-
Open the 2009-2010 season in China playing the SJ Sharks.
-
Youth, youth, youth. Just let every player 25 and under take a huge step forward, and we’ll be fine.
Also, the Lighthouse needs to get going. For real.
-
Determining who is going to be able to contribute at the NHL level longterm and building around them.
-
Watch The Islelights -1993 playoff video on isles tv and learn that Underdogs make their own fait.
-
that would be fate
-
Carry a HW and dress them in 50+ games over the season to protect a young/small team.
-
1) Chris… Really enjoying the new Point Blank…Keep Up The Good Work & Continued Good Luck !!! NOTE TO Chris: (feel free to edit this) The Organization gave you “Chicken —-” and you turned out “Chicken Salad”. Well Done !!!
2) I must begin my observation with an assumption… As in years past, most “EXPERTS” have OUR Isles projected dead last… AND are surprised, or silent when April rolls around & “Those Pesky Islanders” (as Ricky D. said) are still sniffing around the PLAY-OFF Picture. This year,I’ll assume (and HOPE Steadfastly) that they will, Once AGAIN be in that HUNT… And make the following point…
3) This TEAM must avoid, what I call “The Christmas Crap-Out”. You know what I’m referring to… That agonizing stretch sometime between mid-December & mid-February (the “dog-days” of the NHL season) where there’s a HORRIBLE string where 2 or 3 points are garnered (usually in OT losses) over a 10 to 12 game span. The result is demoralizing for FANS, and I’m sure the TEAM takes very little pleasure in having an otherwise respectable season begin It’s swirl around the rim, as it heads down the “CRAPPER”. This Melt-Down then disappears as mysteriously as it arrived & leaves the club scrambling for points and position down the stretch. I have hope that Coach Gordon and Staff will somehow stave-off the dreaded “C C-O” and instill hope & confidence in a brighter future…
4) GO GET-EM BOYS !!!!
(I say “boys” cuz even the “Old Veterans” are a lot younger than I.) -
To Have the Hockey Gods help our Islander Organization……………Amen!
-
1. Finish dead last.
2. Trade all FA vets for draft picks and prospects at the trade deadline.
3. Draft wisely.
4. Give young kids the advantage of lots of ice time to develop.
5. After grabbing a Tavares or Hedman attracting free agents to play with our other youth and using assesets to bring in quality players via trade to filll holes.
6. Higgins and Komosarek are available soon, two servicable Long Island boys to help bring in the crowds (SHOULD hard after both)
7. NEED THE LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT TO BE GREEN LIGHTED. -
08-09 Should be to evaluate our young talent OBJECTIVELY!!!! @ the trade deadline be sellers & accumulate as mant picks as possible in the draft. As long as I see growth by our young talent I will be happy.
-
Play Comeau and Okposo over Hilbert. Hilbert has no place on a rebuilding team since he will never amount to anything better than a barely adequate 4th liner.
Hope we finish last and get Hedman or Taveras. Either way we need to draft players capable of being the best players on a championship team. If the Isles think that someday Josh Bailey will be a great second line center than they shouldn’t have traded down to get him. With the 9th pick in the draft I need to get a first not a second line center. Get the Lighthouse project approved.
-
If we are rebuilding why is Hilbert & Meyer even on the team? Trade them for a couple of pucks it would addition by subtraction.
-
I would say sticking with the new “system”. If it really produces “exciting hockey” and make the Isles a “tough team” to play against as advertised, then we as fans, as well as the coaching staff and all of the players, need to commit to being patient while the Isles become familiar with the ins and outs of it. As long as they stick to it they should be successful by end of season. Which in turn will make the fans less cantankerous. For a day or two.
-
This may be off topic a bit (not sure)
But Marketing this team better would be helpful if they want to draw “new” fans.
I got my cablevision statement today an enclosed was a nice schedule for the Rangers! but no Islanders, hmmm?
Like I said, I think this may be off topic but I didn’t know where to add it, I just wanted to mention Marketing. -
C.B. awesome site.
1. Earn respect
2. Get a new tv deal with SNY, I am so tired of being the red headed stepchild in that house!!!
3. Like someone said eariler, make a push for FA’s Higgins and Komecerack next offseason to show the fans some dedication to winning.
4. Read # 1 on the list

Chris Campoli, Bruno Gervais, and Jeff Tambellini proving that they have what it takes to play at the NHL level. Up to this point, they havent proven themselves at all.

No disappearing acts by Mike Comrie or Bill Guerin, like last year, going into “slumps.” Their offense is needed badly.
