EXCLUSIVE: DiPIETRO OUT FOR NYI-NYR GAME
Yann Danis to be recalled; Meyer also injured

12:23 pm, Islanders Iceworks - Point Blank has learned that goaltender Rick DiPietro re-injured his knee last night and will be ruled out of the Islanders-Rangers game at the NVMC on Monday.

Yann Danis will be recalled from Bridgeport to back up Joey MacDonald.

Contrary to some eyewitness accounts from fans in the Comments area of this blog, a source tells Point Blank that DiPietro was not re-injured during the warmup but during the first period of last night’s 4-3 loss to Carolina. MacDonald entered the game at the start of the second period while DiPietro watched from the bench.

In other injury news, Freddy Meyer has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for tomorrow to look at an unknown injury also suffered last night. If Meyer can’t go on Monday, the Islanders will have to make an emergency recall from the Sound Tigers. The smart money would be on Brett Skinner.

The Islanders will likely be without defensemen Meyer, Radek Martinek, Brendan Witt and probably Andy Sutton.

When the Islanders host the rival Rangers tomorrow night, they will be a hurting team. But at least we know they are hurting.

When dipietro does come back from this injury. I think they should send him to bridgeport first for conditioning. After all he only played one preseason game. He needs time to get his form back

  2. 2 Shoogah

    *sarcastic applause*

  3. 3 kevin

im pretty sure he’d have to go through waivers. also, is danis driving here solo or is he with fritz for the ranger game.

  4. 4 On Edge

As a fan, getting very tired of the idiotic limited injury info. Any knucklehead can figure out what kind of injury a player has. This team policy is a bad reflection on how it views the fans.

  5. 5 Shoe

Really, the sad thing is that I almost don’t really care. It would be great to know if this is strain or some minor injury, or if he possibly did some serious damage or re-injured his old injury. As a fan, it is our team, we care, we should be given that courtesy by the org.

instead, look what we get. This has been going on for so long, with such ridiculous means being taken to cover-up stupid injuries as if they are nuclear secrets, I am almost ready to throw-up…my arms, say,”Who cares” and just get behind a team like Chicago on center-ice until garth is gone.

I am the last person I thought I would ever hear say that, but it has been so long this franchise did anything but disgrace itself…..

  6. 6 Rick

Glad to hear DP is hurt and the team wasn’t trying to pull another fast one on everyone.

  7. 7 Pat

Why not just hand over the medical records to the other team ? What difference could it make ? Like they don’t have their sources or scouts - etc.?

Don’t treat us like chumps ( re: shutting the fans out of the injury situation)

Also - CB - DiPietro pulled himself out of the warmups with about 5 or 6 mins left — I just think he needs to sit down till he is 100%.

  8. 8 kevin

any other team have injuries with their starting goalie and 4 of top 6 defenceman??

  9. 9 PR

if they say its for conditioning, DP can go to BP for a week to do so without waivers

  10. 10 kevin

really? then they should def do that

  11. 11 Chris TMC

Oddly enough, this is the best news possile in this situation. I am glad that what the organization said seems to be true. And since Rick is hurt, I am VERY glad that Yann Danis is going to come up for the time being. That is the right thing for them to do. We all want Rick to be healthy and in net, but if Rick is NOT healthy then I do not want to see him at a game in anything but a suit.

  12. 12 EdTurner

Looks like Logan read my post last night. (LOL)

Good job by Greg. They have now alienated the ONLY full time member of the media that cares about and covers the team.

  13. 13 MilburyRuinedMyLife

I just posted this in the comments section of Logan’s blog and it gets at how I’ve been feeling so I wanted to share it here as well:

As fans that have stuck with this team through some dark days, we get that we’re not a good team and we won’t be for a while….but all we ask is that the organization shows a level of competence necessary to turn this thing around and keep us believing in that forever brighter future. The injury policy this year is so absolutely Mickey Mouse ridiculous that it spits directly in our eyes and makes us sick. Grow up Garth and be a professional. Did you not learn anything from watching Milbury? Stop hanging your new coach out to dry with this crap in front of the media.

Great job Greg. You’re the beat-writer, but you’re also the only writer covering this team so it’s imperative that you don’t pull any punches when they’re deserved. Howie Rose is great and I love him and he’s gotta be a cheerleader, but we don’t need another Howie Rose…we need someone to hold these guys accountable.

  14. 14 Mike from Queens

Even if DP did have to go through waivers, can you name one team who would claim him?

  15. 15 EdTurner

Hey Mike - I could name 29 teams that would claim him.

  16. 16 kevin

    especially ottawa

  17. 17 Islanders1984

I can think of allot of teams that would claim him if he was on waivers. yeah he has a very long contract but his cap hit is very minor for a player with his ability

  18. 18 Chris TMC

Of course he would be claimed! The rest of the NHL see what this issue is- a very good goalie who is dying to play and wants to be in, and an organization that hasnt been willing to sideline him for the amount of time necessary. No other team would hold THAT against him, especially when his caphit matches that of some backup goalies.

But waivers is not an issue because, as was pointed out, a goalie does not have to clear waivers to play a few conditioning games in the AHL. Perhaps that is what Rick will do, but all I care about right now is that he is mandated to take the time he needs to get back into top form.

  19. 19 beatlebailey

wow really looking forward to Monday’s game. if i hadn’t bought the tix i wouldn’t even bother…

  20. 20 Chris TMC

beatlebailey: You go to games only to see Rick DiPietro? Well OK then.

  21. 21 beatlebailey

not at all - i go to see the great blend of talented veterans and widely regarded young players we have..oh wait we either trade away or don’t draft the widely regarded young players and our veterans are 3 years past their prime..so Chris TMC I look at my season ticket booklet and wonder WHY did I do this to myself…maybe i can get the government to bail me out of this tickets..they like buying worthless assets..;-)

  22. 22 guerin13

well i guess that means that they weren’t lying about the injury, which is good. we just can’t seem to buy a break on the injury front. i think the hockey gods really want us to get tavares or hedman.

  23. 23 Chris TMC

;) Hey BB- the most widely regarded talent this team has, for the most part, are not even playing in the AHL yet. And you know, I could see getting angry if the older players you refer to had big long term deals with this organization- but they dont. They are here because all the kids arent here yet. I dont mind the guys who are here at all… what I DO mind is all the injuries and the dumb way that they are being handled.

I wish that I was a season ticket holder. Unfortunately, I dont have a car… and if you work FT, having a car is the only way to be a season ticket holder at NVMC.

  24. 24 ItsGoodToBe"Rich"

I think Hedman is ranked higher than Tavares, but if we’re lucky enough to have a number 1 overall pick we have to take Tavares. If Garth Snow tries another one of his “tricks” on draft day again he better go into hiding lol.

  25. 25 "The Dissillusioned Brian" in VA

DP a great goalie? Sure… He is awesome man he has really led us in previous year. DP on waivers let some other team deal with this headache. F DP!
DP will be injured every year for the rest of his career bank on it. His knees are that of Broadway Joe. At least Broadway Joe was smart and good.

  26. 26 rickistrash

Not ONE team would claim Rick if he was put on waivers. Are you out of your minds? A goalie with TWO hip surgeries and 12 years left on his deal????? If the Isles knew there was a team who would claim him they would put him on waivers tomorrow and rid themselves of that insane deal for an overrated piece of trash who is hurt every other game.

  27. 27 beatlebailey

Chris TMC: I hear you. They should have a shuttle bus that would pick up fans from say the Mineola LIRR station. Instead of focusing soley on LI they should look into getting fans out from Queens as well. Guess I am asking alot when the powers that be use a radio station that sounds like my walkie talkies from the 80’s…

  28. 28 edturner

Hey CB - it looks like a lot of people in this group have a lot of pent up frustration. May I suggest you switch the get together from Gabrielle’s to that Yoga place down the block.

    Serenity Now!

    Serenity Now!

  29. 29 rickistrash

Wow, wouldn’t it be nice to have a solid backup like Dubie right now? A guy who did not let in more than 3 goals in his last 15 starts last year behind an awful D. A guy who had a better GAA and Save % than the golden boy. This entire organization is A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. 30 nyisles131

    Serenity now…Insanity later.

  31. 31 Shoogah

I just don’t see Ricky playing for the Tigers. I think we’re just gonna have to see how this plays out. I’m happy to at least know who’s starting tomorrow.

  32. 32 Bill TheTinChick

I doubt any Team would touch him with a ten foot pole. He’s injury riddled to the point of absurdity, inconsistent, has displayed a decided lack of judgement and level of maturity, he’s a coach killer, and his contract is an ALBATROSS for any Team. He’s proven nothing in his career, other than the fact that he makes a lovely Dinner and a Show companion for his lonely Owner.

  33. 33 beatlebailey

nah..just charge a cover and make it an open bar - all will be good…lol

  34. 34 Steve

I was reading on NY Islander Fan Central that the writer is calling for the dismissal of Greg Logan for writing his opinion in Newsday Blog today. Funny, every Islander agrees with Logan, and this guy is calling for Greg’s dismissal.

  35. 35 Joe

You know we are in disarray when Logan starts to turn on them. Im just hoping Fritz is up Tom, the Rags are going to kill em, might as well make it entertaining.

  36. 36 Isles72

If DP is hurt it is time to trade for a number 1. Comrie for Khabibulin maybe?

  37. 37 islesfan44

The fans will turn on Rick very quickly this season. Everyone is growing tired of him.

  38. 38 beatlebailey

fans are just tired of always being the also rans…i mean look at the devils..they had the same problems we do in terms of location..playing in a dump etc, yet look at their success. They have an owner who gets a new arena done and one of the most respected front offices in the league. The Devils success over the past 10 years should be the greatest indictment of this Islander fiasco…

  39. 39 edturner

you want to feel better, go watch the Jet game.

    J-E-T-S
    Just End The Season

  40. 40 Mike

Wow this team is a MESS but on the bright side they will introduce ANOTHER new jersey tomorrow to try to ditract from the reality that this franchise is a COMPLETE JOKE from top to bottom!

  41. 41 DP's Hip

McMullen and current Devs owners EARNED a new arena by proving they were a first class professional organization IN THE BUSINESS OF ENTERTAINING THE PAYING CUSTOMERS, not slapping them in the face and threatening to give away their seats if they didn’t renew.

We’re stuck with Wang for good once this organization (read: bilionaire owner who buys up LI Real Estate for profit) gets the building done.

Then we’re stuck with his hirings and professional decisions, like a 15 year deal at an American Idol concert.

So again, New Jersey entertained and succeeded for years to get a new Building and move out of a dump. We threatened to leave and gave fans ****-all to watch.

Slight difference in those two scenarios, folks.

  42. 42 "The Dissillusioned Brian" in VA

There is definitely no doubt I’ve grown tired of our Franchise goalie! Stupid F’n Wang and Snow! I am sooo close to become a Caps fn until we rid ourselves of this incompent and inept Management. Wang needs to sell and Snow/DP need to go! Don’t give me that crap if Wang sells then were relocated. We would be a better franchise for Wang to sell. I HATE THIS TEAM!

  43. 43 DP's Hip

Gutkowski and Koeppelman were desperately trying to buy before Wang was told by D’Amato he needed him to protect D’Amato’s firm, Spectator Management Group from the two potential buyers who promised to rid the Isles of both SMG and Milbury.

Wonder if they are at all interested now that Koeppelman has made even more money since and the team is devalued more?

  44. 44 kevin

brian you dont deserve to be an isles fan. be a caps fan with ur buddy ovechkin

  45. 45 Matt

It is unbelievable how this team just constantly does the wrong thing with their fans. Haven’t we been through enough? When does it end. I am really starting to get the impression that they are doing this on purpose. I believe this team will continue to loose fans and this crap will just speed it up a bit. I’ve been a fan for almost 30 years and honestly have just about had it. Everything they do is different from other teams like they are pioneers of the NHL. Guess what Snow and Wang its not working and you better fix it before its broke. We don’t care about losing we are use to that!!! Its the manner and lack of professionalism that the organization handles themselves. It is such a disappointment to the fans to constantly be embarrassed to admit they like your team. By the way, excellent site CB!

  46. 46 "The Dissillusioned Brian" in VA

    Kev-
I have been a lifelong Isles and Jets fan and now live in the DC area. Anyways Snow would of traded down 3 spots to skip Ovechkin… To draft character guys and get quantity over quality.

  47. 47 BringBackNyles

Believe me I am no fan of Wang, bu tto paint the Devils as some model that did it right is a joke. They were GONE from NJ, but were forced/begged/pleaded with to stay since the NHL did not want the PR of the reigning champs to relocalte. The Devils lose in the 1995 conference finals, there would be two teams in our area today

  48. 48 Strummer's Army

Logan reports Dannis and Skinner have been recalled which is fine but what about toughness? Are you really such a stubborn jerk Garth Snow that your sending the team against the Rangers with no toughness in the line up? If you try telling me you have Nate Thompson I will smack you. He got beat up by Tim Gleason.

Again, like the cap management, like the past draft. Hate the medical and training staffs who apparently aren’t doing their jobs because guys were getting injured just going through a Scott Gordon practice.
Hate your small and soft defense.
    Hate the lack of toughness.
Keep being a stubborn jerk Garth. Wait until a guy like Okposo or DiPietro gets severly injured because it is open season on the Islanders. Then we’ll have to hear your run your trap with more excuses. We are gonna hear you talking about Jon Sim really went over there and gave the guy an ear full that ruined the career of a top young player.

YOU KNOW WHAT PISSES ME OFF THE MOST IS GARTH KNOWS HOW ALL THE ISLANDER FANS FEEL AND HE CONTINUES TO IGNORE US.

  49. 49 "The Dissillusioned Brian" in VA

    yes excellent site CB! THANKS.
I agree 100% Matt. I really don’t care about the losing. I just get sick of the Mickey Mouse organization. Its un-orthodox and just plain STUPID! The proud franchise is run by CLOWNS!

  50. 50 beatlebailey

when you’re the new Milbury you dont have to listen to the fans…just keep the old man in oyster bay happy and simulcast the games in mandarin…What a F’ing JOKE!! The Isles make the JETS look like a first class organization.IMAGINE THAT!!!

  51. 51 BringBackNyles

The Islanders have announced that after the Rangers game, the upper bowl will be closed with a “lack of upper bodies” injury.

  52. 52 trots

wake up people the injury report method is league wide. all teams report injuries the same way.

  53. 53 Bill TheTinChick

trots, you’re 100% wrong. All Teams have the OPTION to report injuries the same way. The Isles are the only Team exercising their right to not report them at ALL.

  54. 54 Bill TheTinChick

    Hey trots…

Detroit reports that Franzen is out for 3-4 weeks with a sprained left knee, and that Chelios is out 8-10 weeks with a broken tibia.

The Blues are reporting that Legace is out with a pulled hip flexor after tripping on a ceremonial carpet.

  55. 55 Mike Olivo

I want to throw 2 things out here because I cannot find a better place to put them. In terms of a youth movement, why not make a solid push for someone that can really help this team and would already be on this team if it were not for Mr. Milbury: Marian Gaborik. A pure goal scorer, one we have lacked since Mike Bossy retired. 2nd, I am tired of the injury bs and the misinformation. Tell me a guy is hurt, or tell me he is fine. Don’t say lower body injury or bs. Tell the truth.

  56. 56 ShardZ

Why do fan’s think that it is Garth Snow’s job to listen to them? For better or worse, he was hired to be the GM, and you were not. It is the GM’s job to make decisions based on the opinions of his scouting staff, who are paid to understand hockey, and his experience. Feel free to criticize the GM or the staff, but it is ABSURD to think that you should have a say in the day-to-day management of the team.

Look at this year’s draft. After the experts declared Snow’s draft a success, the fans (grudgingly) got behind Baily, and by now most fans have accepted at least waiting before making a judgment. This because Snow refused to “listen to the fans” and instead trusted his scouts and his judgment.

  57. 57 DP's Hip

OMG….so the organization has been run very well and we’re imagining this. Satan wasn’t tradeable so we lost him out of pure genius. We have an AARP line and a romper room line for our b-level prospects. Our prospects are great. Yeah….ok.

I don’t want Snow to “listen to the fans.”

I want to see a winning team, a good coach, rational deals and deals when they are needed and lastly, a sign that a good coach or backup won’t be torn to shreds by someone who is far beneath them quality wise, a nobody retired backup goalie who was made GM by an idiot billionaire who is only after a land grab.

This year’s draft just showed we are happy with possible second liners and never wills and won’t ever get a dynamic first line star foreward or anchor to our defensive corps with the genius we have.

  58. 58 Chris TMC

Everyone the Islanders drafted is already second liners and never-wills according to you, but who the heck are YOU? You are some draft expert? Please. You dont know jack about all those kids and I prefer to trust the experts over the likes of you. The experts think that the Isles drafted a lot of great kids, and their opinions mean more to me than the repeated remarks of the standard whinyfan. Why cant your little group maybe give the drama a bit of a rest?

  59. 59 Shoogah

Yeah sometimes I think we’re conditioned to be satisfied with perpetual second liners and mediocre players. But sometimes you gotta lose BIG before you can put together a winner. There should be no surprises right now. We all know this is gonna be a long season. Building the right way, the way they did it in the Dynasty years, takes time. All the b****ing in the world won’t make it happen faster.

  60. 60 Puck Mama

We don’t want DP here in Bridgeport! Keep your old broken-down, over-paid, egotistical has-beens in Hempstead! We have a decent team here, all he will do is foul things up up here too.
There are SO many other people that deserve the roster space more than he does.

  61. 61 DP's Hip

Ms. Bannedagain? Bailey was projected as a second liner. Bergenheim hopefully improves enough to serve as a second liner but really, he’s suited to be a scoring pest if he works hard on his pucksmanship. Okposo…..first liner if we don’t ruin him. The rest? Until we see Figren and Petrov. Aside from that miss bannedalaot, second liners if we’re lucky. Third and fourth more likely.

We draft poorly. We leave the impact players for the guys behind us if we don’t trade the picks for whatever logic backup goalies use in drafting.

Nice try, though. The organization you say NEVER does wrong does wrong all too often. How’s Mueller, Parise, Filatov and the other shoulda beens in a few ears? I guarantee solid. How are ours? Fingers crossed because that’s the most you can do to assure drafting success and proper development in this sham organization that was once great.

Now go give thumbs up to everything Wang, Snow and others do. Maybe we can let another player with a broken neck skate off?

And go irritate someone else who cares. I wanna see you get banned again sunshine.
