ISLANDERS 3 BRUINS 1
Gs by Weight, Sim & Comrie; analysis by O’Sullivan

The Islanders won in Boston late this afternoon, 3-1, with Jon Sim potting the GW with six minutes left in the third period. Mike Comrie added an empty-netter in the final minute. Doug Weight’s goal mid-second tied the game at 1-1 after Z Chara scored the first goal of the game nine minutes earlier.

Joey McDonald allowed just the one goal on 29 shots. The Islanders out-shot Boston, 36-29.

Here is the boxscore and here’s the game recap from the team site.

In a post-game call with Point Blank, Islanders Eastern pro scout Chris O’Sullivan offered these observations:

“We came out of the gate real well and played a strong first period. It was in the second that we ran into trouble with penalties. We have to stay on top of our discipline and we have to keep our feet moving.

“On the power play goal to tie it in the second, you could see the huge difference Mark Streit makes for our team. He played catch with Dougie Weight and then faked the whole building out by passing it back to Weight for the goal. It was an unbelievable play. Streit brings what we didn’t have last season.

“Joey MacDonald was very aggressive in net. He made some real big saves for us, and did a nice job covering up any rebounds.

“We came back out in the third period with a lot of energy. Jon Sim didn’t just the game-winner, he had a strong game all night. I was also really impressed by Jack Hillen. He skates so well and complements Streit on the point.

“It wasn’t a very physical game. There were no fights and it didn’t get very chippy. It was more of a puck-moving game, a chess match. I haven’t talked to the coaching staff yet, but I’m pretty certain they were happy with the effort and the execution.”

Notes:

According to a well-placed source – a dad watching his son’s hockey class at Iceworks – Rick DiPietro faced shots for the second straight day with no complications, medically or goaltendingly. DiPietro will travel with the team tomorrow for Monday night’s game in South Florida, the pre-season finale. Scott Gordon said on (blatant plug alert) 1050 ESPN’s “NY Hockey This Week” that it’s completely wide-open as to how much action his No. 1 goaltender will see against the Panthers…

(The Hockey) Newsday will have a special NHL section on Sunday with writings on the Islanders by, among authors, Greg Logan, Mark Herrmann, Johnette Howard and Arthur Staple. Did you see the back page today? Newsday plugged the Rangers’ opener today and the special NHL section. The Newsday they are a-changin’…

Do not rule out a cruel cut or two tomorrow, so the Islanders can leave for Florida with as close to their opening night lineup as the injury list will allow.

It wasnt a well played game. Lots of sloppy passing by both teams.

Not a lot of hitting… no fights.

MacDonald made some nice saves and kept us in the game. Defense gave up a few too many good scoring chances, luckily Mac played well.

It was nice to get a win, but nothing to get me too excited heading into the season. Only thing I feel better about is Mac should be a competent backup to DP.

Okay, so who are the cruel cuts tomorrow???

IMO the best thing about this game is that JoeyMac played well. Danis played well in his last game, too. I almost feel equallyconfident with them both… which is an interesting situation. Heres my question on the goalie situation:

If Ricky winds up being Ricky and playing a crapload of games, do you think that the Isles will switch their backup goalies around? Like, give JoeyMac some regular conditioning stints in BPT and bring Danis up? I hope that the Isles learned from 06-07 that an ice cold backup can be a really harmful thing.

My hunch is that good ole Andy “STONE HANDS” HILBERT Gets waived…

CB…why did I read the newsday this morning? I hadnt gone past the first page and it made me sick to my stomach. From now on I am going to try to avoid all Newsday reports and or “articles” and stick with your site or the teams website. All of Newsday is now completely Ranger faithful and I cannot read such garbage journalism I mean opinionated second grade etch-a-sketch. Thank you CB for giving us blog readers and loyal islander fans something intelligent to read everyday. Unlike the backstabbers over at Newsday that sell full page ads to the Isles everyday and then do nothing but rip the team.
