ISLANDERS 5, ST. LOUIS 2
A very special home opener recap
10:45 pm, The Veterans Memorial - The recap from Uniondale after tonight’s 5-2 Islanders win…
The Post-Game
Captain Bill Guerin presented the game puck to Scott Gordon on his first win as an NHL coach. Said Guerin, “I hope there are many more to follow.”
Gordon - “Our players played with more urgency, stopping and starting and making the right decisions. There are some areas we can be better in, but from top to bottom that was a very good effort. I can’t say enough about the job that (goalie coach) Mike Dunham and (consultant) Sudsie Maharaj have done with Joey. And of course, the credit goes to Joey too.”
The No. 2 Story: Radek Martinek left the game in the first period when he was drilled by David Backes up high. He did not return. It appeared to be a shoulder injury. After the game the team declined to say anything other than that Martinek will be evaluated. Our evaluation: you’re back in, Jack Hillen.
The No. 3 Story (for one night!): Rick DiPietro denied the report from TSN today that he had swelling around his knee. “That story was completely untrue,” said DiPietro. “I don’t know where they got it from.” The goalie said if his knee was in bad shape, he would not have been in the lineup tonight.
In his post-game presser, Gordon executed a brilliant cop-out: “I’ve talked about Rick a lot. I enjoy talking about Rick. But I don’t want to talk about him tonight and take anything away from Joey’s performance or the win.” My mouth was wide-open in awe.
MSG+’s Eric Hornick Stat of the Night: The Islanders scored four goals in the first period tonight after not scoring four goals once in any period last season. (CORRECTION: What Mr. Hornick reported is that the Islanders did not score four goals in one period at home last season).
3 Standout Islanders (not named Stars):
Jon Sim - The first real Long Island look at how Sim can agitate the crap out of visiting teams and take them off their games.
Richard Park - Flying from his first shift – setting up the Comrie goal – and never let up.
Freddy Meyer - Lost out in the official Third Star contest to Bruno Gervais (two assists) but led team with 24:19 TOI, stepping up after Martinek went down.
What We Learned Tonight:
- When executed, Gordon’s forecheck system is good stuff. There were lengthy passages when every time a Blues defender looked up, they had an Islanders forward in their face. Doshgarnit, at times they looked like the Jacques Lemaire Devils.
- Having two veteran hands like Doug Weight and Mark Streit around might not always result in a power play juggernaut, but at least it will have some much-needed composure.
- Not learned but reminded: when the home team is soaring, few arenas can get as loud as the old barn on Hempstead Turnpike.
- Joey MacDonald is very capable of making the big, sometimes spectacular save. Rebounds can use a little work, but tonight’s not the time to be a Grinch.
- There will be no awkward countdown to Andy Hilbert‘s first goal this season, and you’d have to be a punk not to be happy for the guy.
Game Rating (out of 5): 3.5 - Huge emotion, 5 goals, big hits, chirping and a highlight-reel save from MacDonald in the first period. After that, bleh. But when the home team wins the home opener, everything is glorious.
Islanders Performance: 3.5 - Hey, we don’t want to set too low a standard for the boys. If the game ended after the first period, it would have been a 5.0, but they didn’t generate a ton in the second half and gave up some wide-open scoring chances where MacDonald bailed them out.
Event Rating: 4.5 - An all-around tremendous show from start to finish. The sight of a stage lowered from the ceiling to the ice with a rock band is so cool, it doesn’t really matter who’s playing on it. In this case it was Seven Mary Three, who not everyone knew – but when it’s 4-1 after the first period, even Milli Vanili would have been embraced.
Everyone knew Long Island actor and Islanders fan Kevin Connolly of “Entourage,” who dropped the ceremonial faceoff. As I wrote earlier in the week, tough to not like a guy who uses his celebrity to pump his favorite team. And the photos of him at the game tonight will be second in visibility only to Governor Palin at the Flyers game.
The crowd was loud during intros, greeting Scott Gordon with a warm ovation and saving their loudest cheers for Kyle Okposo, Brendan Witt and Rick DiPietro, who entered wearing his Islanders baseball cap. We’ll get to the new goal song later in this recap. That’s a stand-alone.
To the thousands of fans proudly wearing the colors and tailgating in the stands hours before the game, my hat’s off to ya. A special thanks to the Islandermania gang for their invitation, the Heineken and the jello shot. For one night, I blame any awful typos on them.
Attendance: A sellout. A true sellout.
Hallejujah Moment: With Hillen scratched, Gordon didn’t have the typical knee-jerk reaction and play a forward like Doug Weight on the point. He simply inserted Bruno Gervais in Hillen’s spot with Mark Streit at the point.
Just Keeping it..Ya Know: Whether it was the letdown after winning their home opener last night, some bad chicken parm at the hotel today or whatever else, Andy Murray’s Blues were not ready to start this game.
Save of the Season (so far): Joey MacDonald’s spread-eagle, right pad stab at an Andy McDonald would-be tap-in three minutes into the first.
Scouts in Attendance: a very long list – Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Minnesota, New York Rangers, Los Angeles, Florida, Calgary, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Phoenix. Would not read into it: Eastern-based scouts love to take advantage of an opportunity to see a Western Conference team.
Tonight’s Shocking Press Release: the one sent out at 7:15 pm announcing that Michael Peca has been suspended indefinitely per Rule 41, Physical Abuse of Officials, for his actions Friday night when Columbus played at Dallas.
Islanders Press Coverage: from Newsday – Greg Logan, columnist Arthur Staple and the multi-talented utiltywoman Katie Strang. Kristie Ackert from the Daily News, Mark Hale from the Post and nobody from the New York Times.
Ah Yes, the Goal Song: Tonight marked the debut of the Islanders’ new post-goal celebration song, and it got quite the workout in the opening period. By the end of the first, fans had no excuse not to know every “Hey”! and “OHHH”! Knowing what was coming, it was pretty funny sitting in the press box and watching the looks on thousands of fans as they realized the felonious Gary Glitter and his Hey song had been dumped.
The new tune, an original ditty commissioned by the Islanders, is kind of a cross between “Rock and Roll Part Two” and the Rangers’ goal song every fan in the league is envious of. I would recommend taking out the “Let’s Go Islanders” part. After goals, fans want to Woo and Hey and AHH, not make a speech. To the fans – the immediate response has not been pretty on Islandermania – consider letting the song settle in for ten games. I wasn’t there, but the first time the Rangers played their classic I’m sure people were standing around saying, “What the @#%* was that”?!
Kids Day Monday: It’s no longer called Kids’ Opening Day but simply Kids Day. Either way, I’m partial towards it. The Islanders play Buffalo on Columbus Day at 2:00 pm and the team will have all sorts of activities for the kids, plus a Bill Guerin jersey. Family Fun Packs – with four tickets, hats, hot dogs, sodas and the good kind of agita and excitement, are available. I’ll be there blogging with my three boys, so please come over and say hello.
The Lineup
Park – Comrie – Okposo
Sim – Weight – Guerin
Tambellini – Nielsen – Hunter
Hilbert – Thompson – Bergenheim
Martinek – Witt
Meyer – Gervais
Pock – Streit
MacDonald
DiPietro
If you’re a dedicated hockey fan, tonight was what it’s all about, you know? Hope you enjoyed it. Whether you were at the NVMC or not, post your feelings about the game in Comments.

By the way….nice win tonight fellas!
-
The boys looked real good tonight – lets hope this continues
-
How about Bergenheim?? He was looking really good tonight. If he keeps that up, he may be scoring quite a bit this year.
-
YES!!
And an Ice Girl pic to boot!!!
-
Chris, I was cracking up too after the first goal knowing the new song was coming. It was great seeing all the confused fans around me. BTW I am non too thrilled about the new song. Losing the Let’s Go Islanders would help, but not much. Great seeing you again at the tailgate.
-
hey chris…
a few points…
one, can you check and see if the islanders are aware that there radio network is a miserable failure? I live in friggin nassau county and I get a different feed on 94.3, not even static, just some carribean music.
Second, have the isles seen enough of thompson? Ridiculous that he is out there instead of comeau. I realize that he is another boston boy, but, c’mon, comeau showed lots of potential and has tons more to offer. Maybe they can loan blake to the bruins for a game? I am sure that would send his stock way up.
Finally, and this is going back a ways…is this the same training staff that had kevin colley try to walk off a broken neck? I am just curious because of all the injuries. I am trying to figure out how confident we should b e.
-
10 players with at least a point tonight sounds like a pretty good balance. Hopefully they can spread out the scoring all season. I think Bergie is going to have his big year, he played aggressively but with poise all night. Poise is what he lacked last year. Okie creates opportunities, but he needs to calm down his baby deer legs and stay steady on his skates while utilizing his sneaky fast snap shot.
-
great game. there was a camera crew in the tailgaiting part and they told me i was the only one right when asked whos the only swiss on the team and i answered mark striet. Go me!!! im really itching to see a fight but scoring 5 goals settles the urge for a little. great goals and hit by freddy meyer. youtube it. peca is my fav player so that was disapointing. hopefully fritz comes up to fight peters tommorow. but then again who will they scratch especially when a guy like comeu is scratched. cant wait for monday!!!!!! i also got a little camera action after the guy talking about bergies sniping goal and worst moment was andy hilberts goal becuz that means that blakey will have to get used to the seats in the coliseum
-
Nice win…a lot to like…but a lot to work on as well.
The goal song was alrite…just needs some tinkering like a little less lets go Islanders. Give it time and let it grow on us.
Hey CB, I believe Howie Rose said that they scored 4 goals in a period once last year…a new years eve game with the hurricanes.
-
Chris – you forgot to mention that Francis J Kasprzak was named State Farm Agent of the game!
Seriously, I did not know how to react to the goal song.
I thought it was a nice opening night. The system that Scott Gordon put in seems good – and works for the team – so long as they skate hard and maintain persistance.
I had not heard that we traded for the Dragons Firedancers and put them in Isles colors ! That I had not heard.
Thanks for this blog – I try to read a couple of times a day – good luck with it !
pat
-
Chris, Nice to meet you at the tailgate. Another great job and the recap and giving us inside info. with the info. about scouts on hand and the rating system of the game. Thanks Joe.
-
o yeah. i like the old song much better but then again its new so give it 30 games
-
Goal song isn’t bad. I think since it was the first game nobody knew what to do, but after the 4th,5th goal it was easy to pick up on. They should’ve put the words on the jumbotron just so people could pick it up a little faster.
-
Thompson sucks!!!!! Where is Comeau???? New song doesn’t bother me. Then again most Islander fans will complain regardless of what was played. Nice Win…
-
That goal song…wow. Just…wow. I would rather we never score again then hear that piece of tripe again.
Bring back the WOOOOO’S! and Quagmires’ Giggity Giggity Goos!
Chris Day…just leave well enough alone!
-
Chris, I was at the game and what a way to start… The energy was great in the building and on the Ice the system looked like the players enjoyed playing it and the opposition looked confused the entire first period. Bergy, Park, Sim all had lots of jump but after checking the stats Bergy played the least of any of the forwards….
The New Goal song ”” is not very good it is missing something, I knew it was coming and still it left me cold and they added the woos at the end for the fifth goal.
-
Sorry Botta, the new song is a joke, 10 games or not. Hopefully they will wise up and get rid of this garbage before 10 home games have passed. It’s pure cheese and was clearly designed for 8-year-olds by people who apparently do not have the pulse of the fanbase. I hated the “You Suck” chant but would rather hear the fans embarrass themselves after every goal than have the organization do it for us. Please, as someone who has close ties with the front office, make sure they’re fully aware of our displeasure – the last thing they need is to give us a new reason not to buy tickets.
I also agree with the guy’s comment about the radio, WTF were they thinking?? Get these guys back on AM radio ASAP. I live in Suffolk so for me it isn’t so bad, but for fans in NYC (let alone NJ, Westchester, and pretty much anywhere north or west of Nassau) to be unable to hear the game is simply NOT ACCEPTABLE. A mickey-mouse radio deal from the mickey-mouse team that brought you the new goal song designed for children.
-
the u suck was fun. it wasn’t an embarrassment. we said it to the other goalie. y would people think it was to our players. thats ridiculous. too bad he didn’t keep his hands to himself if u no what i mean
-
Okay, I can tell you right now that I will NEVER get used to that new goal song. What CRAP! There are garage bands that can come up with better stuff than that. That is just AWFUL! I know the reason the Gary Glitter song had to go, but really! UGH!!!!
On a better note, I loved the hustle of the team tonight. I hope they can keep this high tempo all season. I love the results.
-
the new song is horrible, get rid of it as soon as possible. it sounds like somthing charles wang and garth snow put together 10 minutes before the game. wow, its really bad, its almost embarrasing to hear that thing. i’m also pretty sure and i think alot of others would agree that the reason we switched the song isn’t because of singers “issues” but because of the “you su*k” chant that somehow evolved into the song last season.
-
Very Satisfied wih the effort from the Ny Islanders Tonight !
The Islanders played a decent transition game, showed more speed with the infusion of youth!
Buzzed the net all night!
I will even stubbornly agree with a star for hilbert.. He skated well (effective on penalty kill. ( as he usually is)….
Difference being along with that he finished tonight and actually helped set one up!
if he has 15 to 20 games like this over the course of the season, i will be the first to line up for some humble pie;)
we shall see.like to add i thought CB was spot on on his views tonight i saw the game the same way.. I.e Sim already gives us an element
we did not have last year.(had quite a few chances as well… i think sim will score some key goals for us this year! One more thing CB .. 100% agreement on Freddy meyer!
2 seasons ago i was all over this guy, appeared like a skater with some speed yet positional play was weak,
could not play the man at all, and all around looked outmatched on nights, understanding all along,
his smallish stature puts him at a dissadvantage for a defencmen in this league,With this said….
freddy meyer somewhere between his stop over in phoenix and late last season and now.. has really played Solid Steady Hockey, takes the body now and is effective at it!Plays much smarter positionally now as well no longer wandering around..
To me Meyer has re-invented himself,, Kudos!….keep it going freddy!CB’s Right MEYER should have earned the 3rd star tonight, Hands Down !
Gervais was a push to me.. yes he had two assist’s nothing spectecular yet 2 points is a contribution no doubt.
Only problem to me he offsets that with a persistant lack ability to carry the puck out of the zone & make that first crisp pass..
Counted at least 3 icings and 2 neutral zone passes that were quickly turned over !As well…..
played with his usual lack of urgencey. To me never any physical element when they pepperd the net in the 3rd for there second goal.
Just basically standing around
in front of joey mac.
nothing personal to bruno Gervais the human being.. just personal to bruno gervais occupying a space on the Ny Islander rooster..yet to me still as of now tonights game a not really deserving it.
Had pretty good seats five rows behind Isles bench..
Gervais has to become alot more consitent alot sooner then later. we shall see?
(so to me a push tonight for gervais)Honorable mention to Trent hunter as well seems more determined to go to net and shoot Still throwes the body , yet again CB eluded to this a few days ago.. again I agree.. If Hunter can score 25 goals this year it could bode very well for the guys in Blue& Orange!
P.S. Doug Weight still has gas in the tank fits well with guerin,
Streit commands a presence at the blueline on the pp.. his lookes were rushed tonight by st louis,
(they know what he can do)Streit will in the long term help this power play ,
I think we all know this…
just how much should be fun to find out!Still think we will need more of a physical presence once the divisonal games heat up!
(hope they will utilize fritz)Oh by the way I mention this to all of The NY Islander & Hockey fans, writers media & players who do honor and respect the role of enforcer part time full time , whatever you want to call it as well this is intended in part for a certain indiviual who writes on the
newsday blog SIR William who was quoted as saying “fighting and the enforcer days of the league are through, its in the past, get over it”.. you get over it and i’ll prove why…On CBC Hockey tonight they showed highlights in between periods of the Vancouver Calgary game…
Scraps in every single game shown.
also TSN.ca ran a story early last week…
Fighting over the last two seasons going into this one.. has gone up percentage wise each year.(i forget the exact number yet it was substantial from year one to last season)
Coincide this with the start of this season I think hes missing something? My point Simple.. Fighting & toughness is still very much here.
I think quietly the NHl & Betteman realize its part of this rich game,
when goverened in the right context..
(NO GOON WORSHIP HERE)I believe after a few years of careful review & quiet closed door meetings with the governors/team owners of this league…
The NHL will never eliminate Fighting after further consideration… why?
Because The Majority that fill these 16k to 20k arena’s recognize it as part of the game like or dislike it…
To me and other Hockey purist its and integrable part of the game, one that brings balance to it and can be argued creates accountability for those cheap shots and ugly dirty play that was taking the place of the occasional scraps …
The NHL did not need to fix something that was not broken…
I think they(the nhl) undertand that we can still be a viable ,marketable, & profitable sport.
even with that aspect of the game remaining… dont believe me believe what you see on the Ice SIR WILLIAM:)Quietly, the NHL is doing all of its real fan base a favor.. Thank you Mr. betteman for keeping the game pure while still finding a way to make it better, i.e more speed , eliminating the clutching and grabbing, the hooking, and the obsessive penalty calling of two years ago!
When this game is in-corporating all of the elements that made it the game it was over the last 100 years….
Its the best game on earth period..
p.s. Parents if you disagree with this sport and how its played we live in a free world where choices abound as to what to involve your child in…If you like a less agressive game, baseball, basketball, golf , bowling tennis, etc..
all very exceptional games in their own right..so go for it.. all the best of luck to your kids.. just stop trying to regulate ours..!!
Good win tonight NY Islanders congrats scott gordon! LETS GO ISLES!!
LETS GO ISLANDERS!! -
Chris: A rare error for Mr. Hornick. Isles had 4 goals in second period of 4-1 win at Carolina on New Year’s Eve.
-
i take it back.the goal song wasnt that bad just new and unexpecting they should hav subtitles
-
hey where we’ll you be???
-
Chanting “You Suck” after goals is pure White Trash. Who gives a sh*t what they play after they score. To the poster who complained and said something like ” This gives us another reason not to come to the game” Are you kidding me? If that would really be a reason not to go to the game, then you really aren’t a fan to begin with.
-
WOW- you have to be an unbelievably fickle brat with a huge, inexplicable sense of entitlement AND the whiniest most negative b****fest of an attitude EVER if not hearing a clip of a flippin Gary Glitter song makes you not want to come to a game!
There is NO making some of you happy. Ever. There isnt a song on Earth that you would all agree on and like, anyway- because its obvious that you like complaining so much more! This game was everything anyone could want in a home opener- yet some of you are SO desperate for something to b**** about that you jump on this! I am sincerely embarrassed by some of the comments I read. Its a GOAL SONG lol… WTH were some of you expecting? The way that ANY goal song becomes a great goal song is when fans EMBRACE IT. Why cant some of you just put smiles on your pouty, whiny faces and enjoy things instead of just complaining like usual? I dont think there is another fanbase anywhere that complains the way Islanders fans do.
If you want to complain so bad, why dont you pick you battles with a bit of flippin logic? After the treatment that was Dol(an)ed out from Cablevision on Friday, some of you could use your love of complaining and direct it at those who deserve it- Cablevision. You could be writing letters to them about chopping our teams broadcast to ribbons when they are under contract to play Isles games. But instead, you complain about the team when they give you a 5-2 win. Some of you people have some seriously messed up priorities.
Rock on, Chris.
-
Howabout the end of Van Halens “Talking bout love” where the band is screaming “Hey Hey Hey”…the Flyers used this a few years ago. Would top the crap the Islanders are using now!
-
Wow,thats all…wow! This team appears to have some grit. I forgot how intense Sims game was. Love the hustle all around. If it moves Hunter will hit it. String a few of these back to back….like I said..Wow
-
People, whether or not you heard the goal song and whether or not you like like it, be happy you got to hear it.. FIVE times. If they get shut out there will be just as many complaints on this board than when they win.
They looked real good last night but looked a little spent later in the game. I am not sure if they were just comfortable with their lead or were just a bit winded. Either way that was a really good game. Onto Monday… LETS GO ISLANDERS!! -
I was skeptical about the goal song but I cracked a smile when I heard it. It’s not awful. It’s catchy. It’s friggin ORIGINAL and that’s awesome. Sure beats that Zombie Nation song and the other played out junk that everyone else uses. I like that it’s unique and I love that I heard it 5 times last night! WOO!
I thought Bruno was solid. Assists aside, he played darn near perfect at his point, pinched at the right times, and hustled in a way that he sometimes forgets he should be hustling.
Hopefully Radek recovers quickly and Comeau gets his shot SOON.
I thought SevenMaryThree was a nice addition. A coupla those songs were kinda rockin’. It was a good night. Like a reward for being so loyal through a tumultuous off season. -
After goal song:
Can’t we use the old Whalers song?“We suck chant”:
You can’t market the game to kids and have this. Add this to the cursing from the tenagers and drunks and dad no longer wants to bring his kids to the game. For those of you that watched the game on TV, am I the only one that thought the volume on the crowd noise mic was way toooo high last night versus Howie?
-
Great game! Great win! As long as I can hear this song five – six times a game, I love it. I think boys got a bit content in second and third but they picked it up a notch after second goal, so it’s not too bad. Streit had to be a third star…
im concerd about Witt… He is not the same guy so far and I bought his jersey
Wake up Braveheart!!!!!!!
-
Hey Ed
Been to a game in the Garden recently you think the Coleseum is bad try there. They are still into Potvin Sucks.
And I thought I was the only one who could not hear Howie. Got to get the sound balance sorted out.
Oddly the night before on the evils channel it sounded like the crowd was sitting on its hands when their team was introduced. -
THE GOAL SONG IS HORRIBLE…I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD CALL UP THE ISLES AND TELL THEM HOW BAD IT IS…ITS A JOKE OF A SONG….
-
The new goal song really *is* terrible. However, I must say, when you’re a team who has barely made the playoffs for three years running, and missed the postseason last year, you shouldn’t be saying “you suck” to anyone. When you *are* good enough to consistently win, then be classy enough not to insult people. So, though the new song is wretched, I’ll still take it over a song by a pedophile with insults to other players attached to it by an embarrassing fan base.
-
Thanks for the plug Chris.
What I actually said was that the Isles did not score four goals in any HOME period last season. They did score 4 in Carolina on New Year’s Eve.
-
great win by the isles last night.
the new song is terrible but it sounds much better than the “you suck” chant. i’m glad that’s gone.
I’ll just say it: Chris Dey knows sh*t about Islanders fans.
“An educated business man doesn’t know what an educated common man really is thinking.”
-
Did you hear that Brandon Sugden got a tryout contract with the Ranger$ farm club in Hartford? After rooming a week + ago with Fritz, now he probably has to slug it out with him today. Will be interesting to see if they go at each other. If Sugden needs a fight to help his chance to stick – I am sure Fritz would accomodate him. Or – maybe the Wrecker will take him on. CB, interesting if you can give us an update on this situation. I have to withdraw my support for Sugden – as I cannot support a player who works for an organization with its headquarters at West 33rd Street. Hoping he gets picked up by a real hockey team somewhere.
Pat
-
The goal song is not very good at all. I am not a fan. As ridiculous of an invention as it is, I am a fan of t-shirt gun that shoots all those shirts like a machine gun
-
Bergenheim was the best in my opinion.
Comeau needs to be in this line up…
I don’t see much upside in Thompson.
Same with Hillen.. Pock does not do anything for me.The song sucked.
-
This is strictly regarding the fan experience. I am a longtime season-ticket holder. I was very disappointed with the sleazy use of the Ice Breakers and the former Dragon “FireDancers”. Regarding the “Ice Breakers”, the way they were introduced makes it look more like an “escort service”. I’m not coming from the viewpoint of all the family-friendly drivel(and there’s too much of that); this is about an affront to decent ADULTS. Oh, and could the Isles lose that stupid cursive font they were using on the Jumbotron and elsewhere last night? It’s pathetic and hard to read.
-
TMC, it’s time to STFU, get off your high horse, and shitcan your trademark homerish rants. You can’t fall back on these “you FLIPPIN guys are all such FLIPPIN complainers, GOSH!!!” comments every time the organization botches something and fans *GASP* have the nerve to complain.
People who spend lots of time, money, and energy supporting this team have every right to get upset at mickey-mouse front office operations, of which the wretched new goal song is a perfect example. Don’t bother telling us we’re bad fans for refusing to embrace any and all crap the organization feeds us, because the opposite is true. Oh yeah, and please STOP using CAPS LOCK all the TIME, you look like a damn fool.

Hey there C.B., in regards to the new song you can’t help but agree that you were left shakeing your head as well. I mean, the fans want to chant Hey, Whooo!!, etc. The song the Islanders put together was awful and cheesy. I don’t think we will be seeing this song around (hopefully) to much longer.
