ISLANDERS TO INTRO NEW GOAL SONG
“Rock & Roll” by Gary Glitter is dead

Gary Glitter, Gone Baby Gone

(Gary Glitter: maybe we should have known something was up with this dude)

Islanders team president Chris Dey recently went on the message board Islandermania to inform fans that the franchise is changing the celebration song played after goals by the home team. For the last several years, the DJ spun “Rock and Roll Part 2 (The Hey Song).”

The ditty has been an NHL arena staple, but also is notorious because it was recorded by Gary Glitter, an English glam rocker who is listed as a child sex offender in the UK. Several teams have dumped Glitter over the last few years.

In his message board post, Dey would not reveal what the new song would be, but it is an original composition paid for by the hockey club. Plans are for the new song to debut at the home opener next Saturday when the Islanders host the St. Louis Blues.

If we could make a suggestion to our friends with the franchise, it would be to break the new song in more gently – perhaps the first weeknight home game, Oct. 23 vs. Dallas. For the home opener and the kids opener on Columbus Day, use Joe Satriani or U2 or something other than Gary Glitter.

Let’s face it: any change takes a while to embrace and is almost guaranteed to be accompanied by some controversy and maybe even a whole bunch of complaints. From what I know about the new song, it may be very well-received, but it couldn’t possibly be bullet-proof.

You want your home opener to be about a re-connection with the fan base after six months away. You want the evening to have some link to your team’s tradition. Of course, more than anything you want it to be about getting two points when the horn goes off at 9:30.

What you don’t want is “What was that song they played after the Islanders scored”? being a primary topic of discussion. Surely, there are better things to come out of a New York Islanders home opener.

What do you think? Comments, please. Let’s skip the obvious “Let’s hope they score.” Like O’Reilly says, no bloviating. My job.

It’s about time. Chanting you suck at the end was white trash to begin with. I think it’s a good idea. I would have taken Van Halens “Ain’t talkin bout Love” which the flyers used back in the day. It was awesome

  2. avatar BD says:

I was hoping for a rendition Falco’s classic: Der Kommissar.

  3. The act of changing the song itself will provoke discussion anyway, so I think they might as well debut the one they commissioned. I like the idea of an original song that no other team will have. Whether it has the desired effect…well, we’ll see.

  4. avatar The Mick says:

You’re assuming that they do score on opening night.

  5. avatar Jax says:

Why can’t HB be named on this site? Just curious.

  6. avatar Jax says:

they should at least get 1 vs. St. Louis

  7. avatar BeatleBailey says:

i will take the under on 1 vs st louis based on an eyewitness account of last night’s figure skating

Yeah Chris. I’d just jump in feet first. People will either grow to love it or they won’t. What happens if you play U2 on opening night and we have a great night like last year with plenty of goals and buzz? Then a week later you debut the original production you paid for in front of 8,000 and we lose 5-1 and people are crying that we should just use the song we used opening night.
Bottom line is that people enjoy goal scoring and over time if the song is at least decent fans will start to associate it with good and happy times and winning games. Love, matty

good points, Matty. Here’s to you enjoying a home opener of lotsa goals and buzz…CB

well st.louis is bad. we should do cant be touched by roy jones jr. its new and good for getting ppl pumped

  11. avatar HIlbertSnipe says:

If its an original composition I sure as hell hope it isn’t like any of the commercial tunes we have commissioned in the past. There was an Islanders fight song we had during the fishsticks era I believe. I was seven years old and thought it was horrible. haha

I’m looking forward to hearing it – Rock & Roll Pt.2 was getting old in my opinion and let’s face it – it didn’t exactly bring this team any good luck.

  13. I think we also need a new goal horn ;)

  14. a new goal horn will change things up a bit, since allot of other teams have it.

I’d imagine that Jax hit the nail on the head in the first post here; continuing to play that song would be a tacit endorsement of the “you suck” chant that makes the fans look like trash. The team couldn’t have continued to use it unless they were OK with the chant, which, thankfully, they were not.

They may have wanted to test the song during the preseason game (which is what I’d have recommended), but the team didn’t hold up their end by actually scoring. If they’re going to use it, they may as well start with the first game. Worst thing that could happen is that the new song doesn’t compare to U2 or whatever they go with beforehand.

  16. avatar KP says:

Our horn is awesome, but R&R II is stale. The Rangers have the best goal song in the league, as painful as that is to say, when I’m at the garden for Isles/Rangers game, I almost feel like joining in on the celebration then I remember who I’m rooting for.

  17. avatar Darren says:

Does it really matter! We will never hear a song after they score old or new. After Wednesday’s “game” I don’t see them ever scoring!!

  18. avatar Randy Boyd says:

If they win, the goal song will be meaningless. Unless the new song is totally fruity, this whole discussion should disappear faster than it will take colton Orr to deck jackman. As isles fans, we have a ton more pressing issues to be concerned about than a song which might be played once a night.

    ac/dc !!!!!

  20. avatar ron says:

i was wishing for Bouncing Souls’ “Ole”- the devils used it two seasons ago.

I’m freaking GLAD the R&R II song is dead. I loathed the “You Suck” chant and takes me back to the “throw trash on your own home ice” series. It’s sad how i make that connection.

  21. avatar Mikey_Mitts says:

Chris is trying to run this team preaching shareholder based logic. It’s crap. Chris has come up from the same style that has destroyed Wall Street. Personally I think the song is tradition but willing to trade for a different high energy tune. Chris can take his Sigma six style and shove it. Stop treating our season ticket family like morons. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

  22. avatar Ryan Tendrup says:

Don’t like it. And although some people are too classy to chant “you suck” to the other team.. After 9 or 10 beers, I do it anyway. It’s not trashy, it’s fun. And I wanna hear the damn chicken dance. And I agree with KP. Rangers do have the best goal song. I REALLLYYYY hate to say it.. But it is catchy.

  23. avatar luis figueroa says:

i think joe satriani “crowd chant” you be a great goal song it would have the crowd going. hear the song and you’ll see what i mean

  24. avatar Ian says:

It’s about time the NYI stopped playing it. Hopefully they’re the last sports team anywhere playing it.

  25. avatar matt says:

Its true they might be better off if they kept status quo its drawing more attention this way. rememeber when the washington bullets changed to the wizards to draw attention away from dc’s high murder rate, when in fact the change brought more attention and jest to the situation. How about a team song, like the mets have meet the mets, i dont think any other nhl team has one. while we are on the subject how about a new goal horn. hows this for an idea? Whenever an islander scores a goal in a home game, the horn sounded should be that of the other teams home goal horn. Great idea. that would confuse the heck out of the opposing players and be like pouring salt and lemon juice on the open wound. Hehe it would make the games more interesting too a new sound game to game. I like it! Just think of the ranger fans in the coliseum after the isles score and they hear that dreadful monotone drone from the garden. But for now we dont have to worry about a goal score song, they make up of this years team is allowing us such never to hear it anyway.

  26. avatar pete willard says:

What a shame that no comments contain any reference to the reason why the “Glitter song” has been abandoned!

For too many years decent Americans have been inadvertantly funding a disgraceful pervert who has badly hurt children in the UK and parts of Asia. Hopefully ALL US and Canadian sports teams that use his back numbers will stop. Pete. England.UK.

  27. were still chanting u suck
