About Thompson-Voros last night

by admin on October 28th, 2008 at 11:30 am

(Thompson and Voros are so much bigger than these dudes, and they didn't get milllions for their fight last night)

11:30 am, NVMC - The greatest Puck Daddy of them all has a breakout entry with video on the Nate Thompson-Aaron Voros fight from last night. Wyshynski makes a beautiful point: while the brawl is not a classic, it is elevated by…

1. Being in the middle of an Islanders-Rangers game at the Coliseum.

2. “Even the punches that missed were rather awesome.”

On top of all that, it was at the end of a shift for both players and was proceeded by about 30 seconds of intense 5-on-5 grappling and face-washing. Puck Daddy compares Thompson-Voros to the great Round 8 of De La Hoya-Pacquiao. Only thing we’d add to that is, imagine if the two boxers did about a half-dozen wind sprints and then immediately met in the middle of the ring – on skates, of course.

I just ran into Thompson in the hallway before practice and told him about Puck Daddy’s tribute. A guy like him, literally fighting for every minute of ice time, appreciated it. I asked him what it’s like to square off against a 6-4 opponent after skating, pushing and shoving.

“Sheer exhaustion,” Thompson said. “There were a lot of scrums and I think we wanted to get away from them. We were both at the end of shifts so he was just as tired as I was. It was just one of those things where it was understood we had to go. A good, fair fight.

“I can’t tell you what it feels like when you’re trying to hold off this big guy, throw punches and protect yourself when you don’t know how much you have in the tank. You just try to give everything you have until it’s over.”

And when it’s over, at least you know you’re not skating again for at least five minutes of play. Asked how much water he drank in the penalty box, Thompson said, “I’m not sure. A lot. The whole time I was there I was watching the game, drinking water, squirting the bottle all over my face. You use the time to get ready for going back out there and maybe doing it all over again.”

The fight was a tie but we did not get a point as if we tied the game and went into OT.

If Thompson won the fight, we still do not get a point in the standings.

Lets play hockey, win some games and leave the fighting to the people in the stands.

  2. avatar Schultz39 says:

Let’s try to win at least something….if not the games, then the fights.

  3. avatar Pat says:

CB – let’s not get carried away as if its Tony Twist vs. Bob Probert…..but I for one appreciate the willingness of Thompson to stand up for our players. I would prefer Thompson to be our “Associate Goon” – for Thompson is not really a goon – just playing out of position. Want to see Fritz get a shot – as Schultz39 says – lets see some small victories here –

  4. avatar Joe says:

Agreed Pat, Thompsons too small to be going with anything other than MW’s. EdTurner, no point in that, were not going too be building up pts anytime soon.

  5. avatar Valentino says:

The more I look back at the Ryan Smyth trade, the more irate I get. Nilsson and Grebeshkov are both top 5 scorers on the oilers and both extremely young. To think he unloaded last years first rounder as well without getting smyth signed first ! I mean how does snow pull the trigger on that trade!!!

  6. avatar Darren says:

Yeah WOW great fight…they still lost the game!!

  7. avatar Valentino says:

if the isles just let guerin or comrie walk at the end of this year without trading them for whatever they can get, im gonna lose my mind. I dont care if we get a case of gatorade and a bucket of practice pucks.

  8. avatar JOE RVC says:

that was a fight????are you freakin kiddin!!boy comrie really looked bad last night so did tambellini

  9. avatar JOE RVC says:

jeff tambellini -what is the point of having this guy hang around, right now he is the worst player on the varsity..maybe edmonton wants him?/gotta go

  10. avatar Paul says:

Not for nothing, but we are dropping fast and the system is not working as far as I see it. The fight is a joke and we need scorring a heavyweight and now a goalie. We r trying to make lemonade out of these Lemons.

  11. avatar Valentino says:

the system will be as good as the players playing it. what more needs to be said.
the system might pay off when we have some legitimate players. majority of the guys who get big ice time for us wouldnt hardly sniff the ice on most other nhl teams. take parrish for instance…heres a guy who got bought out of the final 3 years of his deal in minny..and we will more than likely give him quality minutes. we had the lowest goals scored in the league last year…and that will only be worse this year. with that being said…im going to go down a gallon of drano because i cant take this team anymore.

  12. avatar Paul says:

Most systems would work if they had the right players! We have been saying that for years, and we still are saying it this is a calamity! We need scorring and the injuries will take it’s toll as we drop like a rock.

  13. avatar Steve says:

The islanders stink. Period. This is year 10 of the rebuilding plan. Has beens and non-scorers is all they have. Any player of any value either walks or is traded for a draft pick that Snow screws up. They are the joke of the league. WHO PROMOTES THEIR GOALIE TO GM!!!! Is Melky Cabrerra going to be the Yankees GM next year? This team is a joke. Whose numbers are getting retired this year to get fans into the building?

  14. avatar kevin says:

wtf is gordan and snow thinking. ” we’ll use a heavyweight when we vs a tough team. – gordon. rangers are one of the toughest in the east. what is this guy thinkin? and snow too?

  15. avatar kevin says:

steve this is year one. brett hull is gm of the stars. whats the prob

  16. avatar kevin says:

mike left this team in ruins so snow has to rebuild it. use ur head

  17. avatar kevin says:

worst part of game is okposo gettin nailed unanswered. thats why we need fritz. whats snow and gordans prob

  18. avatar Mikko Makela says:

Is that a photo of the REAL De La Hoya and Pacquiao or is that their wax figures in a museum? Weird.

  19. avatar JOE RVC says:

that wasnt a fight the ref had to coax those guys to go at it. both players were very tentative at first.we should have a true enforcer..

  20. avatar Angry Pete says:

Is it just me, or is Andy Hilbert the reincarnation of Shawn Bates?

  21. avatar Angry Petes Brother says:

Actually, Shawn Bates scored an important goal or two during his tenure ( think Toronto Series penalty shot)

Dilbert…I mean Hilbert is flat out useless….unless someone wants to hash up what a PROLIFIC scorer he was in the AHL????

  22. avatar Angry Petes Brother says:

Can De La Hoya skate? Unlike the rest of this team, At least we know he can fight.

  23. avatar Angry Pete says:

Actually, the only reason why I grew to like the Islanders was because you were a big fan growing up. At least you were around for the Cup Years …. I was too young at the time. Instead, I have to look forward to Derek King night and perpetual Dinner & A Dynasty DVD pitches on isles.com. You are the worst big brother ever. I hate you.

  24. avatar steve says:

Our pick this year wanted to know why we were talking to him because we were drafting so high. Great free agent signings this year too. Can’t blame teams outspending anymore. Clueless.

  25. avatar Steve says:

So now we have to get pumped up over fights. I guess when you have no shot of winning or being taken seriously in the league, you have to look for other things to focus on. I hear there are going to start serving caramel popcorn at the concessions. Let’s all high five!
