MARTINEK OUT, HILLEN IN
Gordon mum

by Chris Botta on October 13th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

1:35 pm, NVMC - Not much to talk about in the pre-game because the Islanders are not talking about anything.

Prior to the game, Islanders head coach Scott Gordon refused to name his starting goaltender even to Islanders broadcasters – you know, the radio guys the team pays and the TV guys whose company pays good bucks for the privilege of showing the game.

He also declined to provide an injury update on defenseman Radek Martinek. By the looks of the warmup just started, Jack Hillen is back in.

Joey MacDonald and Patrick Lalime are the goaltenders. Enjoy the game.

The Lineup

Park – Comrie – Okposo

Sim – Weight – Guerin

Tambellini – Nielsen – Hunter

Hilbert – Thompson – Bergenheim

Streit – Pock

Meyer – Gervais

Hillen – Witt

MacDonald

DiPietro

Well another back-up goalie matchup. that’s cool

  2. avatar KillerC says:

Gordan has alot of Eric Mangini in him…
    is that Good or Bad?

  3. avatar Eric says:

Just as an aside: I live in NYC and am at work…obviously I can’t watch the game right now but I brought in a radio to listen to it and 1100 AM doesn’t even reach midtown manhattan. Awesome. just another thing isles fan have to put up with. This is really ridiculous; I know everyone’s said it 1,000 times before but fans of a professional team shouldn’t have to put up with the lack of coverage that isles fan do on a daily basis…

  4. avatar JOE RVC says:

Gordon you work for the isles not the KGB

  5. avatar Ebz says:

No pre-game and low budget radio coverage…..just another season in Islander country. Gotta be a true diehard to root 4 this team………

  6. avatar Eric says:

My life would be so much easier if I was a Ranger Fan……except for the fact that I would hate myself…..

  7. avatar JOE RVC says:

eric,, and you would have to spit on the ice girls

  8. avatar Eric says:

For anybody in my situation…I just realized that I can listen to the Sabres radio broadcast of the game through NHL.com….ehhhh…

  9. avatar EdTruner says:

Memo to Garth & Scott –

The Islanders need all the press they can get.

    Press helps sell tickets.

You will be reminded of that on the 23rd when the Stars come to town and there are more empty seats than sold seats.

So stop acting like little kids and take advantage of what little press you have now (all of one reporter from Newsday – none from the Times, Post & Daily News).
If you don’t tell Logan anything, why should Newsday continue to cover the team?

He can right game recaps by watching the game on TV.

  10. avatar BeatleBailey says:

just to add my two cents on the radio…whose brilliant idea was it to move to a station that cant be heard clearly 3 miles from the coliseum??!?! This person should be FIRED from the islanders organization. Was it the son-in-laws bright idea? WHat was wrong with Bloomberg radio??? Season ticket holder who wonders wtf is going on?? How about telling us who will start in goal and give out injury updates..Garth please understand very FEW people care about the islanders and whether or not they move, so please treat the FEW fans you have with respect.

  11. avatar IslesFan in Bkny says:

I hope there are more than few true islanders Fans in USA. It’s just not all of them are computer literate and have a chance to get to NVMC for a game. All I want that is that Isles must this Backwords organization label once and for all. Gain respect we once had back.

  12. avatar Mikey G. says:

    Just throwing this out there…
-WFAN went to NJ to get a hockey team for its station rather than the island
    - opening game was NOT a sellout. Many empty seats, but it was packed.
    - we NEED a new arena to compete
    - this whole wanna be NY Jets thing is dumb, we need all the exposure we can get
    - new goal song is a sham
    - ice girls are still hot

  13. avatar Paul says:

What a Suprise!! The Isle’s are not Talking! You know one thing, if McDonald keeps playing the way he has Dipietro my break out the Rattles and start to Whine….. to play! Remember who the Boss is!

  14. avatar KillerC says:

AHhhh back to reality Islander Fans…5-0 Buffalo and our Backup Goalie is 2 Injured to play…

Life as a Islander fan: Cant make this crap up. Who runs this Comedy show?

  15. avatar EdTruner says:

Thisd is why EVERY team (not just the Islanders) MUST carry one or two enforcers.

They are losing 5-0 will we really see a drop in talent on the ice with Fritz out there?

  16. avatar Rich says:

Sportsline has it 4-0 Buffalo. I guess since I can’t hear the game, it might be 5-0. If nobody can hear or see the game, did the game really take place.

  17. avatar EdTruner says:

Oh and this joke of keeping DP as the backup when he can’t play is ridiculous.

I can’t beleive Bill Torrey would allow this. Oh my bad, Bill is gone and Garth is sitting in his seat.

  18. avatar EdTruner says:

    Oh it’s 5-0 Rich.

Jody Mac (I’m only on the team because I have a one way contract) gave up yet another goal becuase he was not hugging the post.

  19. avatar KillerC says:

If you know we really suck …Clap your Hands….(clap clap)

  20. avatar IslesFan in Bkny says:

STFUp Ed. This not a game to let DP reinjure his knee. Let JM shmuck suffer for what he deserved… He got his nose way too high I think… We are not going anywhere with or without good backup…

  21. avatar Dmarie says:

OK, I know we can’t win em all but this game is to painful for me to continue watching, 5-0 ouch! It’s hard to bounce back from that, especially with the way we’re playing today. We look lost out there
Stop with the penalties already to many guys! And obviously our defense needs work, where are they? your goalie like a quarterback in football needs protection! and one to many times buffalo was at the net and where was our defense?
I really hope Witts ok! hopefully for his sake it’s nothing serious and also we can not afford to lose him!!

  22. avatar EdTruner says:

Hey IslesFan, keepit clean kids will be reading this.

I agree, this is not a game for DP to come in and get hurt. That is my point. He should not be dressed.

  23. avatar IslesFan in Bkny says:

Im sorry Ed but Im sick of our own fans puting this team down.

  24. avatar Chris TMC says:

Joey Mac isnt really to blame here… he isnt an NHL starter, but he is nontheless starting like one, anyway. 3 games in three and a half days is what starters do.

The problem IMO is having a player on the bench that you cannot put on the ice when you need to.

Chris, this is what I was talking about at the home opener.

If the Isles cant put Ricky in, well then what is he DOING there on that bench? He should have been on IR all this time and Danis is the one who should be on that bench.

Im not disappointed about losing a game in and of itself, I am far more disappointed to realize that the Isles have not been being cautious with Rick. Instead, it looks like they really are just afraid to put him in net. I had a feeling that Ricky just wasnt able to play yet, and unfortunately today it looks like that is indeed the case.

  25. avatar EdTruner says:

Sorry IslesFan but I am not drinking the Kool Aid.

What I am saying and we are seeing today is the reality of the 2008-2009 Islanders. I am as frustrated as you are. It’s been 26 looooooong years.

  26. avatar EdTruner says:

Reading the post from “Chris TMC” made me think, is Ricky on the bench (and not on the IR) so people buy tickets thinking he may play?

  27. avatar Jon says:

The case for firing Ted Nolan is falling apart quickly. It was a SNOW job to cover up his performance as GM.

  28. avatar Rich says:

Let’s stop bashing the Isles. We will be sad to see them go. It’s a common theme but when they are playing in Vegas or some other yet to be determined city they will be missed. &-1 though is a disaster at home. You shouldn’t give up seven goals to anyone.

  29. avatar IslesFan in Bkny says:

No needs to be sorry Ed. At least you had a chance to see 80′s. I didn’t and Im still a fan since 1995… Mark Lawrence and Mariusz Cherkavsky are my heroes… Can it be any worth for a fan? :)

  30. avatar 72-to-forever Troy says:

I can accept losses—they happen in EVERY sports team (this side of the 1972 Dolphins), but I can’t take not dressing a full complement of healthy players……if Rick is healthy, then he should be playing; if he needs something to recover (conditioning, better health, whatever), then call up another goalie and dress him…..so we could be competitive for longer than Joey Mac allowed the team to be today. Watching on the Center Ice package, it mystified me why DP was dressed but not starting AGAIN…….

  31. avatar rob section 315 says:

i blame the goal song. the islanders players dont wanna hear the crappy song.

  32. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

    Joey Mac “sobering reality”
adrenaline flowed in the opening two games, yet with todays multiple soft goals any confidence gained could be gone?
(The Franchise player is ready soon?)

Martinek goes down and Boy do we lose something…. “Big Time”.. Injury prone maybe, best all around defencemen we have right now On The Island…. Defininately!

    Bergenheim “Team Player”
yet do we really want to see Sean having to drop the gloves,
    risking the chance injury?
to me prime example of the need of a presence on the Ice
    (who’s got his back)

    Thompson “#45(asham not really)
    did his job.. “commendable”.
yet no Checking & Balance pun not intended..We need this type of player..

though as someone else earlier last weak pointed out and Ahl caliber Asham will not do!

Bruno… “brutal again turnovers & Toast!
    too bad its not breakfast!
I have said enough about him, you guys out there watch him closely and tell me im not right.. (trade him while he still has some value!

Witt versus Kaleta 2or3 years ago would give him a decent tilt… 4 9r5 years ago would beat him.

At one time #32 was one of the top fighters in the league , now his role is more valuable & suited to play a mean game against or teams top fowards,
what you watched tonight is unfair to witt
cracking his head open on the ice isn ot what we need! (the strength and tsamina of a 10 year younger athelete has begun to effect witt (komisarek last year)

I Like Witt, “Tremendous Class Act”
    A real team guy.
just think if managment wants him to stay healthy and finish out his career with the Islanders they should re-think part of the formula on the Ice.
This League will be a much tougher on this year they gotta know this.

(somebody else should be doing this)
Once Again I stand By The Islanders They are Our Team!

    Yet I wish to re-iterate …
“We Will Quickly become known as the softest team in the league this year if they do not rectify this situatuion”..

    With all this stated….
of course its just one game,p
plus we still have key players out…
Dipietro,Martinek, Sutton, One more name I think name i think would make a difference….. (old man or not)
Sillinger…. before the hip surgery there was no doubt he gave us an adavantage in the circles, as well as his all around game.

Sillinger is obviously missed right now as well. (just wondering what he has left in that aging frame)

    Worried right now….
a few beatings like this both scoreboard & on Ice may adversly effect the kids and make the old guys feel even older?

(I will harp on this only because its a valid concern)….

c’mon garth you were a stand up guy in that crease, one who knowes the value of not allowing his team to be intimidated in any way shape or form!

    Lets Go Isles..Lets Go Islanders!!

  33. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

    will add two last points…
although we out hit them 26-16.. they were soft checks nothing to change the flow of the game..

this stat is often a misnomer to me..its not neccesarily about the number of hits.. it’s the quality to me

second surprise on the faceoffs.. did not realize we faired that well…

still all around for now Sillinger,
    would play if healthy?
then again with our club.. who knowes?

wheres Comeau? trade em’ for Gaborik if your not going to play him!
    ;) wishful thinking!

  34. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

Campoli.. as well. excuse the omission

    Witt comment*stamina* / 4*or* 5 years

*the league will be amuch tougher *one*

sorry guys for the sloppy typos’s just hope some of you get the message i am trying to convey to our organization!
    thank you!!

  35. avatar Chris TMC says:

PnP, just pointing out that youre not conveying ANY message to our organization, youre just posting on Chris Bottas blog lol.

  36. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

maybe so.. chris. yet it makes me feel better…lol

hey ya never know maybe some cheesey intern can get somebodies attention, who can get somebody else’s attention and so on, and son , etc.. (the old hair shampoo commercial forget the product name)

Heck maybe the Main man of this site himself..CB could help!
i know he’s a Hockey guy and understands some of these concerns as far more then rants.. they are legit as we patiently wait for a team to rebuild, how about giving them pride if nothing else!

if asked will stop commenting on the board , do not wish to be a burden on Cb’s site.. just think we need to speak up at tiimes.. i have kept it inside me for like,
oh….. 10+ years now forgive & bless us all who mainstay a stead fast backing of this hockey club;)

CB say the word and i’m gone!

  37. avatar kingbet123 says:

Just got home from work so I haven’t seen the game yet but I do want to comment on DP being the backup. If he isn’t capable of playing, get him off the bench and put Denis or someone else there. What happens if Joey gets hurt???

I love this site…CB does a good job.

  38. avatar Chris TMC says:

Hey PnP- for whatever its worth I find what you say interesting… but man- you make ME look quiet and concise comparatively, and that aint easy! :D
