MEYER OUT 2-4 WEEKS
The Fantastic IVth undergoes sports hernia surgery

by admin on October 31st, 2008 at 2:46 pm

We interrupt the energetic and endlessly entertaining overtime-tie debate below with an injury update, courtesy of your New York Islanders.

Freddy Meyer had surgery today to repair a sports hernia and is expected to be out of action 2-4 weeks.

Here’s what the website Physicians and Sports Medicine says about sports hernias:

“Athletes who participate in sports that require repetitive twisting and turning at speed, such as soccer or ice hockey, may be at risk of developing a ‘sports hernia’—disruption of the inguinal canal without a clinically detectable hernia. Insidious onset of unilateral groin pain is the most common symptom.”

My word, do we hate insidious onset of unilateral groin pain. We’re thinking of you, Freddy.

Okay, back to the overtime-tie debate.

Freddy was playing excellent. I like him as a #5,6 dmen. Hes one of the few players who plays good every game.

  2. avatar kevin says:

    freddy is great

  3. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I guess this gives skinner a decent opportunity.

  4. avatar StuDog says:

another sports hernia/groin/hip/SOAZ injury. I have one too. Hockey puts a lot of strain in these regions, but this team needs a DPT who instills a quality off season training regimen to address the strength (or lack thereof??) in these weak areas. It all starts with hip strength and mobility.

  5. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

this SUX! it mean s Pock is going to stay in the lineup longer! Pock SUX! trade Pock for a bag of pucks and bring up Kohn or anybody else!

  6. avatar Chris TMC says:

Pock had a good game last night, probably the best he has had since he got here.

  7. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

CB, Will Hillen be called up?

  8. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

    another “overspeed” victim

looks to me like the new system has a flaw! why else dont we see this many injury’s on other teams?

  9. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

true Pock was better last night, but what about the next game, and the one after, ect. he is a turnover waiting to happen!

  10. avatar Tim F says:

This isn’t the greatest news but everyone has missed the fact that the team actual disclosed a full injury – procedure and time frame. Could this mean a change in policy???

  11. avatar JOE RVC says:

i say to greg logan who misses another scoop ..i know chris botta and youre no chris botta

  12. avatar 7th Woman says:

Hey! it was an injury REPORT? You must have beaten them into submission CB.

  13. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

i’d like to see Hillen called up. he has the potential to become a very good NHL D-man.

  14. avatar JOE RVC says:

ijust like botta blog better than logans what can i say

  15. avatar blitz says:

who cares? How about the injury reports on Goalie For Life, Sillinger, and Bailey?

  16. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

this is crazy! weave had more injury’s ina month then most teams may hav all year! DP, Sillinger, Bailey, Sutton, Witt, Martinek, Campoli, Meyer! thats 9 players already! if this keeps up after 7 months it could be 63 players injured though the year! …forget Sound Tigers we might need Utah Grizzlies by the time this is over!

    “overspeed”

  17. avatar guerin13 says:

so they actually told us what the injury was and gave a timeframe. wow!

  18. avatar jbranny says:

I’d like to see Hillen back as well. He was getting better every game. With more consistent ice time he will develop into a top 4 D.

  19. avatar kevin says:

    isnt that 8 injuries??

  20. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

CB…. “Fanatstic IV”, hmmmm I think your on to something.

    get well soon Freddy…
the re-constituded version we seee of you theses days fits in well with what the Islanders need from a 5th Defencemen!!

Happy Halloween enjoyed the spirited debate on the other post!!

p.s. will they be selling authentics tomorrow with names i.e. Hunter?
if not will pick one up on NHL. com
the jersey lookes better then it has in years!!

will buy it regaqrdless of where we are in standings!!
Provincial Long Islander to the Core baby!!

I’m gone for today good day fella’s!

Lets Go Isles… lets Go Islanders!

  21. avatar UIF says:

Unfortunate. Freddy’s been all business ever since that waived, signed, waived, signed thing last year.

  22. avatar Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~ says:

6th defencemen* as always rush the post knowing whe are blogging , you guys understand most it..

sorry B carey its me in your cross hairs… my typing skills are minimal my proof reading, obviously not a priority as much as it should be…
will attempt a better effort as the team progresses… (good excuse)
until then its the though(read a few times..lol that counts later!

  23. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

kevin: yur right, my bad. but give it a day or two and could be 9.

  24. avatar Strummer's Army says:

While I think Meyer is better then Pock, I still don’t view it as a great loss. He is one of the guys we ned an upgrade with.

The Gordon Tie thing is….OK they gave great effort and got a point but the other team got 2 so in fact not a tie!

Still a very good effort and nice to see some edge to the team. Philly took far fewer liberties with us then most of the other teams.

Be nice to watch Long Islander Mike Komisarik tomorrow and dream of him coming home if he makes it to UFA. I think if he becomes a free agent we have a good shot because of his friendship with Rick and desire to be near his Dad.

  25. avatar NYI365-318J1 says:

i would love to have Mike Komisarik on the Isles, he would definitly be worth the $.

  26. avatar Jon says:

Komisarik would be awesome, but i doubt this injury will lead to a trade.

  27. avatar beatlebailey says:

same with higgins…how did we miss on these guys…from our own backyard for crying out loud!!

  28. avatar Rick says:

This is unfortunate – Freddy had been playing the best hockey of his Islanders career so far. Hopefully this gives someone like Skinner a chance to show what he can do on the NHL level, albeit I don’t imagine it will last all that long with the (hopefully) impending return of Martinek.

  29. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    Hey, Beatle:
Part of me says they missed on Higgins and Komisarik because the scouting department wasn’t very good. The other part says it was Milbury’s disdain for all things Long Island Hockey. Remember he came in and shut out all the vets and Islander Legends from having anything to do with the team (if they weren’t already in place). Many of them felt very slighted and angry with Milbury. When you see about how many times the beat the crap out of Milbury you can see why he disliked them but made no sense to have a fued with them. Anyway, Wang came in and made things right with the former Islanders which he deserves credit for.

  30. avatar Zach says:

    Ge better, Freddy

  31. avatar Steve says:

The Isles love Meyer so much they put him on waivers last year. They tried to trade him, and no one wanted him. He isn’t that good. Just the facts.

  32. avatar Just That Guy says:

They put him on waivers to get him back from the waivers like 2 weeks later, and if I’m not mistaking (I might be, but I dunno) Phoenix paid half his salary.

I like Meyer, not a top quality defenseman, but awesome depth non the less, best of luck to him on his recovery.

P.S. I love this website CB! It’s like the greatest thing that happened to the Islanders since the 80′s!

  33. avatar Swan says:

Hilarious CB, “insidious onset of unilateral groin pain”. This is the best Team-related blog.

No Hillen call ups, please. Skinner has already done more positive things in one game than Hillen has done the entire season, so far. Hillen may end up being a decent player, but he was absolutely awful to start the season. He is not ready. Let him develop in B’port this season.

In my 25+ years of being an Isles diehard, I cannot recall so many mistakes made by the same player over a month period. He is clearly overmatched right now.

  34. avatar branny says:

    Swan,

Who are you watching? Is that why Skinner has received 6 and 13 minutes respectively in his first two games. He looks like a fish out of water.
