POST-RADIO SHOW
What did you think?

By B.D. Gallof

The new radio signal for NY hockey debuted this Saturday morning. Don La Greca and Chris Botta graced the airwaves with “NY Hockey This Week” on 1050 ESPN Radio.

We would like to know what you thought of it. Did you like it? What worked? Did you not like it? What didn’t work.

All feedback would be appreciated.

Great 1st show I even got in and asked if they thought the lack size size at center should be a concern. I was the caller Joe from Pt. Jeff.

thanks for calling in 303. That was fun. I heard you didn’t hear the answer. Don said he thought the teams could be okay if they compensated with speed and hockey sense. I said it should be a concern, especially when you see the NJD throwing out a line of Rupp, Holik and Zubrus.

Thanks also to everyone who listened in. I’m trying to see if the producer can send me a file of the show that I can post.

With the guests there were two intriguing answers. Scott Gordon suggested the NYI were going to have an enforcer on the roster. He also seemed to imply Fritz was ahead of Sugden. I would have to believe that’s because his skating is further along as this point than Sugden’s.

Lou Lamoriello, asked by Don about all of the money spent in the UFA market, sounded the deathknell. I was shocked by Lou’s bluntness, but happy. As he was answering, I gave Don a big thumbs-up for thinking to ask the question.

    Again, thanks everyone for listening.

Deathknell? As in, deathknell of the CBA? Collapse of the system? Another lockout? Franchises folding?

I second the podcast idea! Great first show!

Great debut, Chris! Living here in upstate NY I need to catch the show online. Wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to do so today, however, because when I went to ESPNRadio.com, the link for ESPN1050 was still playing the national ESPN feed. No problem, though - quick phone call to ESPN1050 and they got that fixed right away. Kudos and thanks to the guys at the station!

As for the show, I was also curious about Gordon’s comment re: enforcers. If my math is correct - and it might not be - I count 14 currently signed Islanders forwards on the roster. Add Fritz or Sugden, and that’s 15. Even if Bailey only sticks around for the 1st nine, that’s still 14 when Sillinger gets back, suggesting two guys not dressing each night. Not saying they couldn’t use an enforcer-type, but the numbers don’t seem to work given the commitments made to many of the other forwards. I just assumed they would pick and choose which opponents made it more of a necessity to have an enforcer around for, and then call up one of these guys from Bridgeport on an as needed basis.

Good job! It’s about time NY sports talk radio actually talks about Hockey.

Great first show! The interview with Lou was particularly informative. Kudos on bringing a much needed focus to the NYC metro area.

CB, thank you for you continued devotion to Islander fans and hockey fans in general. You deserve tremendous credit for your former role with the Team and bringing a one-of-a-kind access to its Fans.

Chris I saw your response. I agree with you it will be a problem. As I said you have the devils w/ Rupp, Holik and Zubrus, Rangers have Dubinsky and Frische, Pitt has Staal and Malkin and Philly ahs Carter. Al big centers. They’ll have a much easier time protecting that puck and cycling vs. small centers like the Isles have and that will lead to PPG’s for the other team. It’s gonna be a problem.

You sounded terrific. But Don can talk at the speed of light.

Outstanding show, enjoy it very much.

    Thank You

WTG! I listened and it was good to have real Islanders-related content and not a quickie throw-in lost in 95% ranjerks-oriented material. Hope it continues throughout the season.

Been a hectic weekend, CB, but I DID catch the show. Well done! As someone else posted, I wish it were longer. Don’t forget to post when the next show is. Thx.
