PRACTICE: TUESDAY, NVMC
12:50 pm – Marti out 4-6 weeks; no DP, no Gordon

by admin on October 14th, 2008 at 11:58 am

12:50 pm - The morning after, the Islanders took the ice at the Coliseum missing the following people:

Rick DiPietro - Did not practice today and Yann Danis is not here. We’re told DiPietro is expected to practice Wednesday at Iceworks.

Since Rick has been on the ice for a total of about 60 minutes since last Thursday, wouldn’t think he’ll be starting Thursday. But you never know. Maybe he’ll be the healthy backup again.

Scott Gordon - According to a team official, the coach is out today “for personal reasons.” We hope everything is okay with Scott and will always respect his privacy.

Radek Martinek - The Islanders announced after practice that Martinek is out 4-6 weeks with an “upper-body injury.”

Blake Comeau - He’s not returning to the Islanders’ lineup after yesterday’s 7-1 loss. Comeau has been sent to Bridgeport (AHL).

Brendan Witt - Practiced today, showing balls when a veteran of his stature could have taken a day off after bleeding from the head less than 24 hours earlier. Said Witt: “Brendan Witt 1, the Nassau Coliseum ice 0.”

Chris Campoli - Skated with the team today, but could not talk about it.

Citing team policy, Islanders assistant coaches were not made available to the media.

If all this wasn’t embarassing enough…Have you seen we will be unveiling a new 3rd Jersey? And not just a jersey, but a whole new uniform from helmet to pants to socks. This is the most unnessesary thing the Isles need to do. As an organization we are being ridiculed enough, why give those people more amunition. This is getting sad.

  2. avatar JKP says:

This injury policy thing is really stupid and bush league. As the person paying for the product, I really think I deserve better answers around the quality of the product.

CB, is this a league thing? Can there be some pressure exerted by fans to the NHL to recast this policy into something more sensible?

  3. avatar Chris TMC says:

Sorry to get off topic, but what in the world is wrong with having a retro third jersey? Thats a GOOD thing. Absolutely nobody will make fun of the Islanders for having a third jersey similar to their classic uniform. And if they did, who CARES?

  4. avatar admin says:

friends: let’s leave the third jersey for another day. Your No. 1 goalie isn’t practicing, your best dman is out, Comeau has been demoted and your coach is out today for personal reasons. Plenty to talk about. Thanks…CB

  5. avatar Paul says:

Comeau going back to the AHL Bridgeport and Gordon Keeps Thompson in the Line-up??
Who is making these decisions and we need an Enforcer on the Bench?

  6. avatar Paul says:

CB you are not kidding!! Whats going on here is the Circus back in town! There seems like know direction here!

  7. avatar 7th Woman says:

    Treatment day? Manicure perhaps.

  8. avatar crazyjoedavola says:

The picture at top is worth a thousand blog words. What in the heck is going on here?

  9. avatar Paul says:

To many Secrets for us Fans to stay Idle and Take it! We pay good dollars $$ to see and support this circus they should be more open to us!

  10. avatar Buhwheat says:

Gordon needed a personal day to rehabilitate his pride, which is hurting thanks to all the DiPietro-related lies he’s been forced to tell lately.

  11. avatar fauxrumors says:

    1) Gordon get fired already? Just kidding of course. However as a non-islander fan(not a hater either!) the whole cloak and dagger thats surrounding your goalie is fascinating.
    2) Isn’t it obvious that he’s not healthy? Why hide this? Too many nutty things going on over there. Sorry to hear about Comeau. So in this ‘rebuild’ season, how many guys are in the lineup under 24?

  12. avatar Adam Cohen says:

If Comeau is being sent down, does that mean someone is being added to the roster? I doubt it’s Bailey since he supposedly is 2-4 weeks away, but could they be bringing up Fritz or Jackman?

BTW Chris, do you know where practice is tomorrow? I was thinking of going.

  13. avatar Chris says:

I heard they are bringing up Fritz and Haley.

  14. avatar Eric says:

Since he’s not mentioned, can I assume Witt (Brendan, not Corey) was on the ice, suggesting that his “back of the body connected in the northerly direction to the neck” injury or something like that was not serious?

  15. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

marti out for 4-6 weeks. crap :( . If any positive to take out of all of this is our younger D-Men getting more time and hopefully stepping up big. Gervais, I am talking about you. So it’s three games in the season and we are missing Chris “The Nose” Campoli, Radek Martinek, Andy Sutton, Chris Lee… all on the blue-line. The depth chart is sometimes the most important attribute of your team.
    This is rough.

  16. avatar Brian in VA says:

Boy am I glad I haven’t seen any Isles games this season. I refused to get the Center Ice Package because I am so tired of dealing with this circus every year. Where has this proud franchise gone??? I used to live and die with the Isles but I am tired now. So I will not watch until Wang and Co. are done with the Isles!

  17. avatar stevedepot says:

    Chris,
At what point will fans say, “we’ve had enough” with the leadership at the top?
If they are going to truly REBUILD, Garth Snow and Chris Dey should be no where near this franchise but we know that not going to happen. On the next islander telecast, I’ll make sure to use that SAP feature so I can hear the game in Mandarin. This way what I see AND hear won’t make sense. God help us.

  18. avatar Chris TMC says:

If I had a car Id go get Danis and bring him here myself. this is ridiculous… but it all goes back to this stupid policy of theirs that Garth and the other GMs seem to think is such a great idea. Its not. and some of them are breaking it, anyway… letting THEIR fans know not to worry and not making these ridiculous efforts to keep us all in the dark wondering WTH is going on. So the point of this policy is- what, exactly?

  19. avatar Chris says:

Chris Dey might be the single most annoying person i have ever seen.

  20. avatar Joe says:

They should pursue Kyle McLaren as a decent replacement rather than Pock if you ask me.

Any chance of Fritz as 13th foward anytime soon?

  21. avatar Tom says:

This season has vitually everything the 1999-00 campaign had, minus the hope of course.

  22. avatar Pat says:

Wow, never a dull moment with this team

But to paraphrase Yogi Berra, its getting late early here. This team is so dysfunctional – they have even the more optomistic fans all gloomy.

I have to say – I cannot understand why Blake Comeau is not playing this year. Would he really be stupid and not come to camp in shape? There are very few players who I would tell to lease an apartment ( ask Luongo) or buy a house on Long Island (except Ricky)

However – they do seem to be treating the fans as an inconvienience (with regard to information about the team) -

Is this a team that can afford to make angry either the team or season ticket holders – due to this silly policy of injury reporting?

There has to be a better balance of telling the fans what is going on – vs. – just giving the medical reports to the Ranger$ and Flyer$ – I know…..

Also, makes one wonder who is really running the show here…. (DiPietro?)

Allow me to take a chill pill and regroup for the game on THU.

    Pat

  23. avatar Pat says:

I meant THE PRESS and not THE TEAM – when I said about not affording to make these groups angry

  24. avatar BeatleBailey says:

DEY swaps a radio signal the fans can hear for one broadcast out of a garage in levitown…

but at least we have a levitating stage over the ice…yay!

  25. avatar volmeeezy says:

hey just think , the last time the rangers started the season 5-0-0 was 83-84.. the isles made the stanley cup finals that year .. who knowsssss maybe history will repeat itself!!!

  26. avatar Chris TMC says:

The Canadian press constantly talks crap. They were also positive a few months ago that McCabe was once again an Islander.

  27. avatar Darren says:

3 games in and the disgust level is boiling over. To make matters worse is this NHL policy of not speaking about injuries.
Great way to revive a dieing sport in this country. Let’s completely shout out the fans from the players they pay to see. Good Job! Smartest thing ESPN ever did was to drop this sport.

  28. avatar Ryan says:

back to the post of topic, anyone care to tell me why in the hell Blake Comeau is at the Bridge now and not in our everyday lineup, the guy is one of our top prospects but has to sit behind Hilbert and Tamby, who just doesn’t seem to have it at the NHL level

  29. avatar admin says:

hi everybody. Imagine the pathetic life of someone who’d go on a blog on a day Scott Gordon is away for personal reasons and think posting a fake rumor that he’s been fired is smart. What a jerk-off.

If I ever have a major exclusive, I’m not going to break it in the Comments space. It would be the lead story…CB

  30. avatar Rich says:

The real problem is the lack of information the Islanders are giving regarding injuries and players. This situation breeds rumors.

  31. avatar Ryan says:

Why do idiots have to ruin the integrity and hard work of Chris, you people have no life and need to stop. You are ruining the hard work put in by the people who run this site. Enough is enough

  32. avatar Tim says:

Chris am I not allowed to say this organization is horse sheet? Come on, I love the blog and respect your opinions, but don’t remove my posts for calling the organization out. I was posting against these bs rumors.

  33. avatar Kevin says:

I think what really bothers me about all of this is the current psychie of Islander fans to “actually” think there was some merrit to this. It just goes to show how bruised and batter we are as fans that something so astounding and unbelievable is imediately taken to be true bu most of the NYI fans. CB if the Islanders want to win back fans, they need to rebuild the fans trust that things are going to run smoothly b/c obviously right now, we don’t beleive it.

  34. avatar Chris TMC says:

Tim, he removed a pile of posts all at once. Dont take it personally.

  35. avatar UIF says:

I agree with sitting Comeau down if he came to camp not fully prepared, or with a mindset that he was owed something. But it seems inconsistent to dress Tambellini, who obviously did not bulk up or get tougher in any way after being thrown around easily last year. Frankly, I’ve never seen Comeau pull up when racing for a loose puck in the corner the way Tambellini does. To his credit, Frans Neilson at least takes hits and battles hard along the boards despite not having much to show for it so far. Can anyone say that about Tambellini, based on last year, this preseason (OK, maybe not the preseason since we were barred from watching) or so far this season?

  36. avatar MT says:

    Love that Witt line.

At least Comeau is seeing playing time than sitting in the press box. This should only drive him to work his butt off and get back to the lineup.

  37. avatar Paul says:

CB dropping the Gloves! I love it! These Rag fans always love to rattle the cage i think everybody should pay no mind to them. The Rags are 5-0 though and now have Sugden in their backyard.

  38. avatar Ryan says:

Funny how the Rangers try and block Sugden from returning and then scoop him up when the Isles cut him

  39. avatar Chris TMC says:

Hey Paul- Sugden is not really even in the Wolfpacks backyard yet, let alone the Rangers. He is trying to see if he can make it on to an AHL team, he has nothing to do with the NHL and cant play for the Rags at all.

  40. avatar Paul says:

Can anybody explain to me Why they would keep an injured Dipietro on the bench if he was unable to play at all? What is the Logic in it and who are they trying to fool?

  41. avatar Ryan says:

This whole injury policy is dumb, the NHL really needs to step in and do something. We all know now that DP is not right, they’re not fooling anyone

  42. avatar EdTurner says:

Ryan and everyone else, remember, all the Isles are doing is taking advantage of the new league policy when it comes to not discussing injuries.

    Is the league wrong? YES!

    Are the Islanders wrong? YES!

Do I hate the Rangers? YES! (how did that get in there?)

  43. avatar Paul says:

Chris he signed a “PTO” this was done i believe to prevent any other AHL team from signing him and the wolfpack are a Ranger affliate and there minor league team. Yes he might not be able to play in the NHL yet however we do not know the terms of the deal (2 way) who knows. Thats what i meant by Backyard! He is not in the islanders Backyard although they were the first to invite him.

  44. avatar UIF says:

Wish I had an answer, Paul. My only guess is DP wanted to be on the bench, and this organization seems to consistently listen to and capitulate to him…such as playing him many times over the past couple of seasons when they shouldn’t have based on his word that he was ready to go. It’s never made sense to me, because he just always ends up the worse for it – either getting burned out, or injured, or both.

  45. avatar Shoogah says:

Wow stuff happens fast around here. I just popped it to complain about Comeau going to the Bridge and something seems to have gone horribly wrong. WTF? So yeah. Um…play Blakey C. Sit Tambellini. Make him earn his spot.

  46. avatar Paul says:

    Somebody saw value in Sugden!

  47. avatar Ryan says:

Shoogah I’ve been saying the same thing, doesn’t really make sense to me and I don’t want to hear anything about buying into the system because it didn’t look like anyone bought into the system yesterday

  48. avatar UIF says:

Got a question of my own: can anyone think of a reason behind the mounting injuries on this team? Is it that players are just not skilled enough to be aware of what’s going on around them, so they get crushed? Is it in any way connected to practicing at 150X normal speed, or whatever it is they’re doing? Is half the team just simply fragile? Or is it just a whole lot of bad luck?

  49. avatar Ryan says:

I don’t think the injuries have anything to do with “overspeed” because these injuries mounted up last year too. Marty is in my opinion fragile, he’s a solid defensemen but he never stays healthy. As for the others, seems to be just bad luck, then again nothing seems to go right for the Islanders lately

  50. avatar UIF says:

You’re probably right Ryan. There’d likely be more groin pulls and such if it was due to the practices, rather than shoulders, or “soreness related to an undisclosed region above the waist.”

  51. avatar Ryan says:

It was nice chatting with all of you that actually care about this team, as for the others, sorry Chris that they made you work a little harder today. We really do appreciate the time and effort you put in. It’s nice to have a place to come to and get a legitimate opinion and a place for us to voice ours. Keep up the great work

  52. avatar 13MoreYears says:

Radek Martinek is hurt again?? Didn’t see that coming.

    Regards,
Charlie Brown after Lucy pulls away the football

  53. avatar TuxTax says:

Time for a little vacation on conspiracy theories fellas! Everyone thinks they are a coach/gm/reporter these days. BTW they only played 3 games so far…Helllooooo

  54. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

damn 13moreyears…. you made me laugh again! haha.

Radek is never healthy which is unfortunate considering he is our best D-Man. Andy Sutton is always injured as well… Like I said before, sometimes the depth chart is the most important attribute on your team. Its only three games in the season. Calm down. It sucks that Blake is not with the big club right now, but we still have 79 more games to play and its better than having him sit in the press-box…

  55. avatar Shoogah says:

Didn’t Radek just play a full season? He was the only dman left standing in April, maybe March. I know he’s known for going down quick but he did get DRILLED. I think he’s stronger now.

  56. avatar Mikey G. says:

These comments remind me of a MetsBlog’s comments. Lose a couple of games, and the season is over. Win a couple of games and we’re making a cup run.

Let’s just let them get healthy and play some more games before we judge.

  57. avatar randy boyd says:

why do I have a sick feeling that Mr Gordon is regretting his decision to come here. Does anyone sense another Neil Smith deal? maybe Glenn Healy or Eric Fichaud will be named as coach within 24 hours. Something smells awfully bad at NVMC.

  58. avatar toorude says:

I finally understood the concept of “overspeed” when I saw all of the fans bolting for the exits in the third period yesterday.

  59. avatar dennis says:

i’ve attended all 3 games this season. i am not pointing fingers. just observations and opinions. Doug Weight the “power” forward will do anything to avoid being hit. every shift he should be called for a penalty. either hooking or slashing because he gets cleanly beaten and is always chasing. when he does throw checks,it’s against the boards and his elbows are up. not what i expected or want to see from Doug. Tambellini is not ready or not good enough for the nhl. i attend about 20 bridgeport games a year. i’ve seen Tamby play at the ahl level and he is incredible. his game is completely different at the nhl level. i understand it is a huge jump in talent, he has the ability, why doesn’t it show here? if the goalie’s glove was the net he would have 4 goals. 4 of his 6 six shots this season could not have been more routine saves. his two best chances at goals he sent over the crossbar. send him back to bridgeport, so i can enjoy watching him play where he belongs. there really is no bigger Okposo fan than me. his forechecking and penalty killing this season are outstanding. i love forwards that can play both ways. but where is the offense? his knock in college and the ahl was that he didn’t play defense well. we have a whole team of defensive forwards, let this kid play offensively,PLEASE.

  60. avatar doc says:

Chris Botta… thanks for accurate reporting. Logan in Newsday is always a little off factually.

In todays article he writes that Thompson started to fight with Mair before the puck was dropped… (not true – the pucked dropped then they whacked each other a few times then fought) then writes “out of no-where Bergenheim flies across the ice and starts throwing puches at Rivet…” which again is factually incorrect – Rivet attacked Thompson and pulled him down by the collar as a 3rd man in… and Bergenheim then skated across the ice to stick up for his man.

If you hadn’t seen the game and just relied on this irresponsible reporting… you would think that Bergenheim was acting like a goon.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Does anyone find it odd that both dp and gordon missed practice? i tend to think snow called a meeting to mediate. just based upon body language dp was po’d he didnt save macdonald after the 5th goal yesterday. i hink what gordon is doing is more of an effort to exert control early rather than protecting dp…i cannot believe he is hurt and being dressed. thats illogical. butif he is not in game shape the best way to get there is for him to play…..it would seem gordon wants him to get there with OVErSPEED in practice. my two cents—- DP starts the next game.

  62. avatar admin says:

hi. Any references to the spammed rumor and any baiting of other fans have been deleted. To diffuse the Snow-Gordon-DP meeting theory, Garth was at practice while Rick and Scott were not.

Is Rick really going to start Thursday after just one full practice in the last week? CB

  63. avatar Jon says:

Ricky has been a coach killer with his mysterious returns to the Islanders. Last year Nolan found himself in hot water over Ricky’s return from his grandmother’s funeral. This season it is the new coach taking the heat over Rick’s return from surgery. Snow has to stand up to Rick D and tell him to cut out the selfish behavior and to do what is right for the team

  64. avatar Rick says:

First off, I hope all is alright with Gordon.

The new injury policy from the NHL is a joke & is a prime example of why the NHL isn’t even mentioned as one of the ‘Big 4′ sports anymore – Nascar has lapped them at least twice by now, if not more.

There is no conceivable way that DP can play tomorrow with no ice time this week. There is also no conceivable way that McDonald can start again tomorrow. Why Denis isn’t up here boggles my mind.

Comeau being demoted shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone – Gordon (through Chris) already told everyone that Comeau doesn’t have a role in his system yet – hopefully Blake can tear up Bridgeport & force the team’s hand to bring him back.

Witt’s the ballsiest player on this team and has been since he got here. I’m convinced if he had one arm hanging by a thread he’d have the trainers tape it up & he’d go back out on the ice because his team needed him. I understand why they gave Guerin the ‘C’ and I don’t have a problem with it, but Witt deserved it more then anyone simply because of things like this.

Martinek & Campoli being injured again shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone – neither one has been able to stay healthy for an entire season since they both broke into the NHL from what I can remember.

If Chuckles, Garth & Gordon really want to show the fans & the rest of the league that they’re not a 3-ring circus, if Chuckles still wants to be the ‘rebel owner’ of the league & do things his way, then start treating the fans with some respect again & come clean about the franchise, AKA DP, regardless of what stupid policy was put in place regarding disclosure of injuries.

CB, I love what you’re doing now but I’d be lying if I said I don’t think we’d be talking about half of this stuff if you were still around. Keep up the good work.

The Islander propaganda team is at its worst. Never been this bad since i remember. They say one thing and then turn around and do another. Two years in a row they dress these tough preseason teams only to start the season with the WEAKEST group of players ever assembled. The islanders are one of the worst if not the worst watch in Hockey. Last year was a BORING mess and this year is no different. Way to send 10,000 future islander fans to the door after spending $300.00 in tickets, 7-1 COMPLETE Beating. How many future fans do you think they secured? As per league policy teams are allowed not to make injury to its player’s public in order not to deflate their trade value. Right? I think I understood it correctly. 77. avatar BringBackNyiles says:

CB, forgive the cynic in me but I almost believe it is a conspiracy. We all realize the isles run on razor thin margins and ticket sales are key to the profits. I am sure the economy has hurt a team like the Isles who don;t have a large season ticket advance.

It is almost as if they want us to believe that DiP is healthy so as not to torpedo sales for the next two months. I am satrting to believe he is hurt and they just are affraid to admit it, for fear of the attendance dropping even further and mini plan sales drying up.

The Isles need to tell the fans what is up, this is getting ridiculous.

  78. avatar Chris says:

This question is for Chris Botta. What is the reason Comeau is not playing for the Islanders right now? Anyway you can find out from the Islanders why Comeau made the team out of training camp?

  79. avatar Paul says:

Will everybody just settle down! Coach Gordon after the game had 2 hotdogs and washed them down with a beer. Soo he called in Sick! Ha!

  80. avatar odd girl out says:

i think everyone is being a little harsh here, imo. we are only 3 games into the season. the devils shouldn’t have won the first game. both me and my rangers boyfriend (which is a whole other miserable story to say the least) thought the game winning goal was crap. we were in it the entire time. was it a perfect game? by all means, no…you can see the mistakes but they weren’t completely dominated. then there was the home opener. everyone was on point, and you could actually see how gordon’s overspeed system could possibly work. they were forcing turnovers and capitalizing off of them. they played strong, but there still were mistakes. now i know the game vs. the sabres is what everyone keeps complaining about. but before you take gordon out back behind the coliseum (which i see most are prepared to do) let’s focus on the players. the team as a whole sucked, they couldn’t effectively make a line change without bumping into eachother. they all looked like they were asleep at the wheel. so before we criticize the management or the coaching, we should place the blame correctly, and i think it should be placed with the team. it’s really too soon to see if gordon’s system can really work on an nhl level, but i think it’s safe to say after the first 2 games that there is a chance, and maybe it needs to be tweaked some…who knows i’t not an expert. i think it’s better we took a loss like this so early in the season, maybe it will put some fight back in the players to not want to be humiliated like that again. do i think we’ll win the stanley cup this year? most likely no, but i’m still a believer in my team and i do have high hopes for them. so let’s move on and see what happens in our next game, and the games after that, before protesting at the coliseum. get back to me come all-star break, and if we’re dead last (which i don’t believe will happen at all) i’ll let you have your “i told you so” moment.

  81. CD,

I know this site is “indy” and all, but it doesn’t mean you should go throwing out questionable (douche, jerk-off, etc.) language – it will only make this worse. Lead by example with that stuff otherwise it won’t ever stop.

Secondly, without someone like Chris Botta behind this monster…..im not sure I even know how to finish this question.
