ISLANDERS 4, COLUMBUS 3 (OT)
The whatever-you-want-to-call-it recap
10:35 pm, The NVMC - The recap from Uniondale after the Islanders’ 4-3 overtime tie, ending their six-game winless streak.
The Game: The Islanders coughed up another third period, 3-goal lead but got the second point in overtime on a goal by Chris Campoli - his second of the game - at 3:13.
The game featured horiffic 20-minutes stretches from each team: Columbus in the second as the Islanders took a 3-0 lead on goals by Richard Park, Bill Guerin and Campoli and the Islanders in giving it all back in the third.
Power Play: Islanders 0-2, Columbus 1-7; Shots on goal: Columbus, 34, Islanders 29.
No. 2 Story: Sean Bergenheim sits out this one with an illness, sparing Scott Gordon from making a decision with Jeff Tambellini back in the lineup.
Post-Game Sound
Scott Gordon: ”It’s frustrating. Seems every game we’re struggling with the penalties.”
“It’s discouraging that two games in a row we’ve given up three-goal leads and we just can’t have it easy. We have to find a way to make sure this stops happening to us.”
Gordon said the mood on his bench at 3-3 was solid because his team had “been there before” and was determined to not lose the game. The coach cited blokced shots by Bill Guerin and others in the final minutes of the third as examples of commitment. “They found a way, under trying circumstances.”
3 Standout Islanders (Not Named Stars):
Richard Park: If it’s possible for a heart-and-soul grinder to have a monster game, Park had one tonight.
Andy Sutton: 24:22 of ice, plus-1, three blocked shots, a physical presence throughout.
Mike Comrie: Two assists, best game of his season.
What We Learned Still UnansweredTonight:
- The question of whether this lineup, or any team, can maintain the forecheck system that even Ken Hitchcock called “demanding” for a complete 60 minutes remains unanswered.
- Another question: can the Islanders dress Mitch Fritz again tomorrow against the Rangers and only play him two minutes while taxing their forward lines?
Happy Anniversary: Has it really been exactly one year since Al Arbour coached his 1,500th Islanders game? Hello, Al. Hello, Claire.

Game Rating (out of 5 stars): 3.5 - The Islanders know drama.
Islanders Performance: 3.0 - The longer these winless streaks become, the harder they are to get off your backs. That alone makes this one a 3-star performance.
Official Attendance: 10,184
Just Keeping it..Ya Know: The Islanders’ penalty problems have not gone away.
Just Sayin’: You’d think Columbus has the talent to finally challenge for a playoff spot, but after what we saw tonight we’re not so sure about the hockey sense. On the third Islanders goal, Fedor Tyutin was called for a delayed penalty and stopped playing while his opponents went to the net and Chris Campoli banged one in. Throughout the second period, Ken HItchcok looked ill.
KO Leads the League: Heading into tonight’s game, Kyle Okposo led all NHL rookies with 29 shots on goal. Phenom Steven Stamkos is second with 24.
Scouts in Attendance: Nashville, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago, Phoenix, Ottawa, Minnesota, Calgary.
Islanders Press Coverage: Mark Herrmann of Newsday solo, Dan Martin of the Post, Peter Botte of the Daily News.
Van Pelted: On his daily afternoon ESPN Radio show today, talking about how much the Redskins mean to Washington, Scott Van Pelt threw out the usual nonsense that only 25,000 people in the DC area are really into the Capitals. Okay, Scott. You got it.
Prospect News: Now a junior at Denver, Islanders 2006 fourth round pick Rhett Rakhshani is developing into the speed wing teams are looking for. In his first six games with Denver this season, the 5-10 right wing has 2 goals and 5 assists.
One scout we spoke with points to his “relentless work ethic” as the biggest reason he has a chance to make the NHL.
Next Up: The Islanders play the Rangers at Madison Square Garden tomorrow as we await the results of Fritz-Orr and McCain-Obama.
Point Blank Night this Thursday!: On Thursday the Islanders are in Atlanta but we’ll be watching on the flatscreen tellyvisions on Point Blank Night at Gabrielle’s Brasserie & Wine Bar in Rockville Centre. Join us, along with guest Jack Capuano, head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The Islanders better learn to stop putting their fans through this torment or else someone might get a heart attack. Good game at times disaster at times once again we see the ups and downs of this system and if the isles can sustain the ups and reduce the downs things might get better.
What a relief! The drama just never ends does it???!!!
do we get two points for this tie?
you can say a lot things about the isles this season but boring ain’t one of those words. not pretty but i’ll take the win and leave it that.
A Win… enough said!
well actually on more thing
despite Bruno Gervais.. worst player on the Ice ,, 2& 3 goals…
#1he plays Goalie instead of the Man…
#2he swings at the puck& whiffs twice, instead of the man!
Two predictions both no brainers…
One still look like a lock for 1st or 3nd overall pick! (another 40 minute effort)
second Bruno gervais will not be on the Rooster next season (or sooner)
i’m just saying!!
Comrie played such a great game he even was so generous to mess up his typical junior style toe drag move to cough up the puck for Campoli for the win…
meaning 2nd & 3rd columbus goals!
Pathetic gervais!
cant beleive i am typing this but tamby showed me something tonight.
2nd* pick.
Campoli scored three times - but only two counted. His OT goal went through the net - but officials said it hit the post - then he scored again. A replay showed that the first OT shot was a goal.
Gotta dress Fritz tomorrow.
Attendance was somewhere in my opinion to be 6500.
John Romero of Merrick was State Farm Agent of the Game.
Interesting to see Torres and Peca back here.
It was an ok game - good result for us. I say “take two points and call me in the morning”
Pat
a win is a win i was shocked that they got the point thank god sutton stayed behind his net for the final 11 seconds
One prediction 4 2moro… whoever is leading after 2 periods WILL NOT WIN the game. Given the fact that the isles 4get that there’s a 3rd period and that the rangers gave up 5 in the 3rd to the LEAFS there will be a lead change in that game.
CB…it wasn’t Tyutin on that delayed penalty, it was Backman.
i see that chicago is hosting the winter classic this year. cb why didnt the rangers/isles game at yankee stadium go through? just another example of the league giving the isles the shaft? let me (us) know any insight you may have on that. feel like nhl dropped the ball on that one.
Isles have to dress Fritz tomorrow.
Bergenheim was really missed for what he brings to the team. You could just not notice he wasn’t there.
Bruno Geravis was singly guilty of the last two goals. On the first rather then simply stepping into the oppossing forward and thus ending his opportunities to knock the puck in the net he chose to first fan at the puck and make contact with Mac D’s pad before then still not making contact and deciding to jump down on the ice to block the puck from going in. If he just stepped into the guy no goal.
2nd goal: Rather then taking the body he chose to play the puck and missed.
Either of the goals would have been stopped had he just been a bit physical.
There was another play where the Col player just went right through Geravis and Campolli and neither stepped into him which would have stopped him and not given the opportunity.
Glad for the win.
Hence forth not playing the man!
Strummer .. the details provided were perfect for those who continue to neglect he is by far our worst Defencemen!
Have explained this to the point it’s made me wanna puke. (tired of it)
Thanks for providing the low down!
I dont care what # he is slotted for on our depth chart… It’s TOO HIGH!!
Lets Go Isles… Lets Go Islanders!
this team was scared to hit. comrie looks like he can’t even turn cuz of his hip. if he cant skate then scratch him till he’s healthy. also, can’t wait for fritz vs orr. team needs to play better in 3rd. good to see okposo do good in something because he still needs his sea legs and capitalize on his what looks like thousands of scoring chances. i know it is early but the hype isn’t living up for me
o and parrish signed with stars. two way deal
one last thing is that thn ( the hockey news) has a poll with what injuries hurt team most and dp is first
i sat in loudville tonight and honestly, it was a blast. it was my girlfriend’s first hockey game and she couldn’t stop saying how much fun she had. ultimately, that’s what mattered to me tonight but a few stray observations from my first game of the year:
A. the huge flag during the nat’l anthem is pretty stupid. granted, tomorrow is election day, but this is an isles-blue jackets game in early november. let’s tone down the jingoism.
B. 10 minutes before puck drop there were less than 5000 people in the seats.
C. loudville is a pretty great promotion. there were your share of clowns in the mix but some of those kids can start a hockey chant. “we want chili!” takes the cake.
D. the goal song is much better than i expected. “hey! you suck!” helps tremendously.
E. my god john sim is so much worse than i had realized. comrie a standout? he could’ve had five assists and i’d still call him soft.
F. my standouts: tambellini, park, campoli, guerin
G. i thought weight had a terrible game. bad penalty and rough night puck-handling.
H. this ice breakers nonsense has to stop. this is a professional major-league sporting event, not an iowa barnstormers exhibition game.
I. the third period: at 3-1 and after that penalty, you had to know the jackets were tying it. it just never fails.
J. apparently lots of folks have dropped pretty dimes on those throwbacks. i saw dozens.
K. whoever decided to transform those horrific, cafeteria-style concession stands into beer dens is a g.d. genius. magic hat #9? toasted lager? has to be the best beer selection in the league.
L. some of the kids in the loudville section had mouths on them. good ol’ new york public schools.
M. screw sparky. hire the kid in the banana suit.
CB-2 pts is 2 pts and we’ll take em, but I can name 25 teams that we don’t beat with that effort tonight. Memo to the collection of slight or smallish Islander D-men: the “new NHL” gives all of you a better shot, but it won’t last if you believe you do not have to put a body on the opposing forward, particularly when they’re in “prime scoring areas.” Read that Gervais, Campoli, Skinner, Hilen, and Katic. It’s not necessary to flatten the opposing forward, just to physically engage them. I wonder if not having that defensive coach behind the bench shows its affect in this regard. There are dozens of smaller d-men in the league who don’t routinely drive on rushing forwards into the corner boards but when the puck is played in the slot or off scrambles in front, they show up in a more physical manner.
nice scoops kev….
p.s. this just in.. #8 would look real good in the Royal Blue white & orange next year!!
Hope springs eternal that Gervais becomes the L.I. Killer …KOMISAREK!!
Isles need Fritz tom, no doubt. Game was decent besides the third, no consistency.
lmfao!!!!!! i saw that guy in the banana suit and thought it was the best thing ive seen in a while. also, tambellini had some nice hits including one huge one. o and the refs were terrible. nhl network cant get enough of chris campoli’s 2 goals in overtime. GO MCCAiN
thx pride, good point on gervais tho. he looked terrible out there but i think theres some pressure onhim because hes our like 2rd best defenceman out there right now minutes wise and he was supposed to be the 7th defenceman
good follow Straightshooter.. agrred.. yet one person i would seperate from gervais is Campoli…weakness in playing the man at times, yes!
However he can score goals for them & showes much more promise as a 5th or 6th
Defencemen then Gervais ever will!
lets Go Isles… Lets Go Islanders!!
This is true kev… makes him look even worse.. yet still i’d rather use his minimalistic cap hit & apply it to a second sparky suit with mandatory trips to Various childerns Hosiptals
on Long Island!
Thats where he is #1 on our depth charts

Then he would be a full time Organizational pet, with a purpose!!
Ah Gervais… you upside is not showing anymore… I’m just saying
I say he should be untouchable… until we securely lock Tavares/Hedman… I’m just saying
see ya fella’s need some shut-eye its only tuesday.. come on weekend! lol
later.. lets go Isles!
beat those corporate rags tomorrow!
lol… hurrapop resident wise a**!
Gotta love it.
Good night all!
So I guess Gervais is the new pet for player-hating fans. You guys need to stop. The play he did on the first Umberger goal is a standard hockey play in your own crease. Stuff it under your goalie while holding off the other player. OK, he failed, but he’s in fact been showing some promise this season. I’d hate to see him as the new Hilbert in these comment sections…
By the way, Hilbert is important to this team. He’s an allround solid hockey player. Guys like him and Park are going to carry this team through the season. Obviously Guerin and Weight will put up better numbers, but without those grinders every game would be like playing the Sabres in the second home game of the season…
Well, it was a win but the D weakness particularly on Umberger’s first goal Witt or Meyer would have knocked him down and nobody ever laid a hand on him. Tamby had some jump tonight but no 4 lines with Fritz in the lineup after today, Fritz has to go the forecheck has to have 4 lines in order to work. Hunter, Sutton & Guerin were really trying to play physical.
What is with the Referees not calling the dangerous checks near the boards, someone is going to get killed out there.
All is right with the world….Isles win, Redskins lose and Obama wins tomorrow.
Gervais is good give him a chance. lllllloooolllll!!!! Wow I’ll have some of what he’s having. Calling Andy Hilbert good is pretty funny. Does his job and players like him are a dime a dozen in the league. Calling him good. Even on this team is a stretch. Richard Park is a good defensive foward, Andy although doing his “job” ok is by no means good. Are we all as islander fans this delusional. Come on man we all want them to win but lets be honest with ourselves, do you watch other teams play? How anybody can call anybody who is critical of Gervais a “naysayer” is an eternal optomist and you should pat yourself on the back, this world would be a much happier place if there were more easily amused people like you out there.
gervais=lachance.
tambs hit someone tonite….that was nice.
campoli is gonna get 15 goals this year.
i hope it carries over tonite…..
Tifoso,
Hilbert is gonna carry the team this season? lol. He is carrying them alright!!! Right to Tavares! Hooray for Hilbert! Gervais is terrible, he doesn’t have enough offensive upside to be that kind of D-man and he is too soft to be a defensive D-man. He’s a tweener. He’s a 7th defenseman at best, Lachanse comparisons are legit.
Loved Stan’s words: “Campoli double-dipping…”
Columbus was cross-checking, tripping, holding an boarding Isles the whole game.
And all they got is 2 PP?! Referees should be penalized for that ($).
Gervais is old enough to learn from his mistakes. And he still doesn’t. I can’t wait for others (Witt, Mayer, Martinek) to get healthy and replace this nonsence on the defence.
Gordon has got to stop putting Comrie on Power Plays.
Finaly - a Win! And very entertaining one.
way to go campoli..GREAT GAME!!
I can’t believe they blew another 3 run, I mean goal, lead in the 9th, I mean 3rd, period. When did the Isles sign Heilman, Feliciano, Ayala, Schoeneweis, Sanchez, and Smith? They won’t be much better once Wagner, I mean DiPietro, gets healthy, either.
And, btw, where’s the “youth” movement? Comeau in the minors. Mitch Fritz taking Tambellini’s roster spot. We’ve got a roster of Jon Sims and Andy Hilberts. And you can bet one of our young players will be sent down once Silly comes back. Please finish dead-last so we can get Tavares/Hedman…
Why was Comrie moving in slow motion on that pathetic toe drag in OT, only for the fact that the puck was poke checked away by the Blue Jackets defender and fortuitously landed on Campoli’s stick did the Isles win. I will have more confidence in this team if they are able to skate out of MSG with a victory tonight. Defeating other bottom dwellers is not overly impressive.
To compare Gervais to Scott lachance is an insult to Lachance. To NYC NYI Fan Comrie is slow every night and does the same toe drag ala roller hockey/old timer pick up game move every night. Instead of healthy scratches players should be forced to play with him for punishment. Don’t care if he got 2 assist last night! Liked Tambellini and Nielson had a good game. Hope Bergie is back tonight. Let the kids play and give them the minutes. Stop giving them to morons like Comrie. The guy sets a bad example for the rest of the team gliding around the ice like he’s some kind of NHL sniper, its LOL funny. Still like watching these gsmes more than last year though.
Mike Comrie as one of the standouts ? C’mon CB, You know better…
This year’s team is worse than those in the fishstick era. I’m so embarrassed.
I had to go back and read that Dadi. Mike Comrie as a standout! LOL. CB go down to Long Beach Arena for the midnight pickup games you’ll see lots of “standouts” down there doing Comries patented move, which by the way one of his assists (I believe) was earned by getting stick checked doing one of these beauties. Complete accident. I know we need Hilary bcs. she is a butt in a seat
but do we have to keep Comrie?
Happy for the win, disappointed that the talk about “learning their lesson” from the Montreal game obviously meant nothing. Especially given the disparity in quality of opponent. Columbus couldn’t get out of their own way for two periods (see Modin’s whiff on a wide open net for best evidence of that), but Isles give them 3 w/in just over 7 minutes in the 3rd? Terrible. This team definitely misses Witt, Martinek, and Meyer. Get well soon, boys.
And I think a couple of you need to learn the difference between the comments section of a blog and a chat room. Just sayin’.
Great win!!! ( omg DRAMA!!!! ) But thank you Campy for scoring a 2 for 1 because we all know if that went to replay those tools in Toronto they would have said no goal.
Scott Gordon after the game bit his lip about the ref’s.
I mean c’mon, Jon Sim got 2 phantom calls on him right away and those dam Blue Jacket’s x-checked, held, boarded, & interferred all night but no calls. Someone needs to do something about this against the Isles, its been going on for years & it ain’t right.
and tonight….
Please beat the Rags, I dont wanna owe out 4 lunches to some folk at work
LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!!
hey marc “im just saying”, keeping it real when some of fan’s &media fail
to recognize whats going…
If you are CB commenatator in any way or
associate?? either way
your timing & your comments are questionable…
considering its the subject matter of the
main conclusion.. over the filler of small talk which you have a problem with?
free country
Marc..
with all due respect Cb speaks up and a seeee ya.. is in order!
I think I add substance to this blog .. regardless of how much I write here!
No Spin Zone here!
thats your second small shot taking at me & others.. so here is your response…
Lets Go Isles… Lets Go Islanders!!
P.S. why should it matter if small talk is exchanged on a night where the blog feed back was light… gimme’ break !
Gervais… still a BUM @ at the next game he will hear it(loud N Clear)..
Lets Go Isles Lets Go Islanders!
Touchy, touchy. Apparently I hit a nerve.
And I’m not sure whoever else may have commented similarly, but I don’t know where you get that was my “second” such comment. Wasn’t me.
