Okposo out a week; Witt returning

  1. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Shoot, I’d like to know what happened to Okposo. Anyone see it?

    Glad to have Witt back.

They will call up a forward once Bridge has played a few more games this week. No need to have them missing games.

Jeff Tambelleni this is your chance to step up!

  2. avatar Joe says:

Probably an injury from one of the many cross checks he was on the receiving end of without any retribution. Maybe theyll move someone up *coughjackmancough* then bring up Fritz since we are about to play rivals. I hope they play this right, Sutter probably still wants blood from the hit on his son.

  3. avatar Madchef says:

Don’t even tell me that it will be someone other than Comeau. I mean I think the fans have chirped enough. Keep on rollin Isles. Tough win last night. Joey Mac, maybe he has learned to win from his brief stint with the red wings, none the less keep stackin the pads. Sorry to say but I think Bailey will be going back unless they do something with Comrie, or somebody else on the roster not alot of room.

  4. avatar stumpy32 says:

KO took a slash across the hands late in the game. You could see him shaking his hand as he left the ice. Hopefully it is nothing major.

  5. avatar toorude says:

stumpy 32 – i saw that two in offensive zone in third period – he went right to bench and was talking with what looked to be the trainer. he also had a strange reaction to his crash with luongo right before his back hit the boards – on that play he was actually penalized – it could have been one or both of these events.

  6. avatar rob section 315 says:

do we actually trust the isles when they say 1 week?

  7. avatar Dadi says:

If it’s really one week only, then we’ll see Iggulden or McLean.

  8. avatar Strummer's Army says:

You guys are right. Before they called up Fritz Okposo and plenty of our other guys were being abused. It stopped when he was dressed and it started again when he was sent down. We have to have toughness that teams really fear or our top players are going to be ruined by these cheap shots.

  9. avatar stumpy32 says:

If it is gonna be a center, it would be McLean. But he is a natural center, while Blake is a natural right wing. Thats why I think he goes with Comeau.

  10. avatar Klynch says:

Honestly i am ok with KO being out for a few games (only if it is a few) i think he could use a “mental” break and good to have him see a few things from upstairs….remember it is all about having him grow and learn.

  11. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

    1) Bad News
    2) Best News
    3) See #2
    4) Good News (Let’s win some damn faceoffs.)

  12. avatar steve says:

It’s time to free Comeau or give Trevor Smith a glimpse at the NHL

  13. avatar JOE RVC says:

lets face it ,nobody wants to play the isles right now..we just keep comin at ya..JACKMAN super effort always

  14. avatar michael says:

i like what i’m reading about trevor smith, plus a new #77 – very exciting times

  15. avatar Joe says:

RVC, dont get to ahead of yourself sir.

  16. avatar Ray says:

CB Isn’t it BRETT SKINNER, not Brent?

  17. avatar Rick says:

Strummer nailed it – our guys weren’t getting as abused when Fritz was up with the team. Not that he had to be on the ice, but at least the opposing team knew that if they took a shot at someone, Fritz would be looking for them next time he was on the ice.

If the team is looking to replace KO with another RW, then Comeau is the obvious choice. If position doesn’t matter, then Iggulden or McLean, B’Port’s 2 leading scorers, both deserve a shot. As I’ve not seen a Soundtigers game, this is purely based on stats only.

  18. avatar JOE RVC says:

joe_ its sports if a team is young hot and hustling they are dangerous..plus joey is the brick wall right now

  19. avatar JOE RVC says:

rick~drop the fritz stuff he cant skate he blows he should play football with his brother ..sutton has to knock a few heads around

  20. avatar Joe says:

RVC, Sutton is wayyy too important, along with having a rejectly injured hand. Fritz should be brought up, if not, sign Haley to an NHL two-way contract and bring him up. We need someone to do some enforcing on this team.

  21. avatar Joe says:

P.S. You can say he blows but he beat the best fighter in the league in his first ever NHL bout, remember, this isnt ice capades. Even if he sits on the bench, he deters guys from running around.

  22. avatar andy says:

    off topic:

Darren McCarty was placed on waivers. anyone think Snow should maybe pick this guy up? We can sure use his gooning

  23. avatar Kyle says:

Its gotta be Comeau. He was a huge spark plug last year. Dished out some nice hits and kept control of the puck. He deserves to be called up. Not to mention him and Tambellini had a nice connection at Bridgeport, so for the last time try Comeau with him, if he doesn’t work I give up on Jeff Tambellini. Witt is a huge addition and Im glad to have him back.

    JOEY MACDONALD FOR PRESIDENT

  24. avatar rob section 315 says:

mike comrie was places on IR today

  25. avatar Kyle says:

    Andy-
No. He is too slow for Gordon’s system and would just slow the Islanders down. If they had a superstar to protect I would consider it but he’s old and slow.

  26. avatar Rick says:

RVC, welcome to reality. Enforcers are back in the NHL, and this team does not have one. Andy Sutton is a Top 4 D-Man for us – he can’t be the guy to go out & drop the gloves, he’s too valuable to be off the ice for 5 minutes.

As for whether or not Fritz can skate, well, he didn’t look that awful in the limited time he was here, and if he was that bad, he wouldn’t be in the organization at all.

  27. avatar JOE RVC says:

rick/if hes so important why is he in the minors instead of a last place team //reason,, he cant skate you play hockey on ice dude

  28. avatar Kyle says:

We are 2 points out of the 8 seed….

  29. avatar JOE RVC says:

and last place in the atlantic conf

  30. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

And now for something completely different….Anyone know a good plumber in the Massapequa area?

P.S. Sorry for using the comment board for this CB, just looking for recommendations and I figure alot of your readers are local.

  31. avatar Rick says:

RVC, I give up. You stay on your ‘Fritz Sucks’ train, I’ll stay over here.

As for playing hockey on ice, I’m well aware of that, thanks.

From what I can understand about your ‘logic’, anyone in the minors for a last place team must not be able to skate. So I guess guys like Comeau, Iggulden, McLean & Sillinger must all not know that the game is played on ice either. :)

  32. avatar Julie says:

Hey Brian, here is the plumber info:
    Patrick Dolan Plumbing
    (516) 935-4006
4 Brooklyn Ave, Massapequa, NY 11758

I used them a couple of times (on a recommendation). I was happy with them.

  33. avatar Nick says:

Joe the Plumber isn’t doing anything these days…(sorry, couldn’t resist).

As for the callup, Comeau or Trevor Smith. End of story.

  34. avatar andy says:

the pooper got over-pooped, eh Brian?

  35. avatar Joe says:

RVC, I dont know what your talking about man, I know we need scoring but we are one of the softest and smallest teams in the NHL. Our younger guys are really small and will get knocked around badly if we dont have someone to protect them, I see nothing wrong with Fritz making his presence felt by playing 2-3 minutes a game. Even guys like Godard, Boogaard, Laraque barely play but are there when its necessary.

  36. avatar JOE RVC says:

    joe -point well taken

  37. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

Thanks Julie. Brooklyn Ave is three blocks away from me. Perfect!!!

Andy – Found 9 inches of sewage in my washing machine this evening. Think it may have unclogged itself though. I won’t go into the details.

Thanks again Julie. No other recommendations needed folks. One more reason why Point Blank rocks. Sorry once again for using the board this CB.

One Islander comment because I really must now. I had second row seats last night. Wow! The game is fast down there. My regular seats are in 313. Any other season ticket holder use their “Bring a Friend Tickets” and score fantastic seats?

  38. avatar Jislander7 says:

why are they sending down skinner? send down bruno

  39. avatar JPinVA says:

Wow… way too many plumber jokes in my head.. so I’ll avoid them all.
Comeau for the week would be nice. The guy isn’t superman, but he did bring a nice level of puck control last year. We haven’t really seen a lot of that here. Weight, for his advanced age, has been impressive in that area. Plus you know that Comeau can handle the PK responsibilities… He wasn’t quite there “toughness” wise last year… One example would have been the Exelby situation, and the other glaring weakness to his game was his perimeter play. He was one of those guys that needed to grit his teeth and get into the muck that is the low slot.
I’m on the Fritz bandwagon also… but unlike some here I think Gordon is managing that situation well. Fritz needs to be around for divisional games… not for those obligatory heavyweight matches that have nothing to do with the game except keep fans interested in out of reach games.
I’m one of those guys that wanted to see him chase down avery for all the damage he’d done (Witt’s nads, DP’s coconut and Hill’s whole ancient body). A good Fritz beat down would end Avery’s reign of terror for good.
But this is a world where Peca and Tucker are happy teammates… (not anymore.. but you get the drift).

  40. avatar JPinVA says:

    Skinner v Gervais
    See Contract. also:
Sutton and Streit… number one pair.

Witt goes back with Marty..much more effective with less ice time.

Campoli and Gervais are like the Abbot and Costello of 5-6 defensemen. Gervais will be in the booth when Meyer comes back.

Don’t be surprised if Marty is not an Islander in 2009. I love the guy, but this might be an excellent SELL time for a guy who rarely plays 60 games… How about him and Comrie to Chicago for Barker.. I have no idea why CHI would want to get rid of Barker… and Comrie is DAMAGED GOODS… why do I fall for that ridiculous Hockey Buzz crap.
but it does sound cool. :-)
It’s more likely Marty goes for the standard Draft Picks or prospects… he will definitely help a team in need of solid 3-4 “D”. And they need to make room for Hillen in 2009… That guy, with 10-20lbs of muscle is going to be something.
In his limited NHL time he completed more tape to tape passes than have been seen in uniondale since Y2K.
I haven’t seen Barker, but I suppose he’s very similar to Coburn… and I think Coburn was the BIGGEST MISTAKE Snow has made. Well… in fairness to snow there is probably no way he could have known Zitnik would fetch Coburn… and he has a man crush on Meyer (New England Mafia crush anyway).

  41. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

JP – Man crush on Meyer? It must have developed late. Snow released him before picking him up again. I like Meyer, no crush tho.

I’m on the Fritz bandwagon too. I have the pics too prove it too. Again, no crush. LOL

  42. avatar matt says:

Mike Comrie for Barker. Mike comrie for a 1st. Mike Comrie and Bruno Gervais for Barker. LOL. LMFAO. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guys you are outta your f$@king minds! Gervais is horrible. Mike comrie was horrible before he was injured. Tallon would be fired the day he made that trade.

  43. avatar matt says:

Snow would deserve an award or get arrested for robbing the hawks.

  44. avatar Spinner9 says:

I think this team must be very judicius in their use of Fritz or anyone else who can only play a limited amount of shifts per game. While it may be that the team is just now getting “the system” they definately have had more success since they went back to rolling out four lines on a fairly steady basis. Certain games may dictate some protection but not on a regular basis.

As for the other call-up, I’d like to see McLean, Iggulden or Smith. We can always use another potential scoring threat. Leave Comeau down for an extended period so he can work on developing an offensive game without the interuption of short periodic recalls to the big club. He has only two goals in 12 games in Bridgeport and is only a plus 1 on a team that rarely loses.

  45. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

Spinner. Can’t really argue with your logic on the Fritz/enforcer issue (at least in the short term).

  46. avatar JPinVA says:

    Spinner… damn good reasoning.
    Brian… 2 points
Of all the “D” in the NHL why would Snow settle on Meyer for Zitnick so early in the season. I’m sorry, I didn’t buy “salary dump” then, and I don’t buy it now.
If you love something, set it free… if it comes back…
I bet you’ll never look at Freddy and Garth the same way again.
ATL puts out the double secret word that they are shopping for a puck moving “D” and they might go as high as Coburn for him becasue they are having problems with his agent.
Snow isn’t in the frat, so he doesn’t get the memo.
Snow to Clark… hmm.. what do you want for Meyer… “Zhitnik”
two weeks later the the Flyers have one of the premier young defensemen and Snow has Freddy “I knocked down Spezza” Meyer.

THAT, ladies and gentlemen is why this country voted for George W. Bush TWICE!!!

  47. avatar Spinner9 says:

    JPinVA

Love the Bush reference. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public. I too also currently hail from the blue Commonwealth of Virginia.

  48. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

I agree about Weight. His puck control has been outstanding. He can really slow down and dictate the play. Bring up Comeau and maybe we can have two lines that can control the puck through the blue-line instead of just dumping and chasing (although that has worked pretty well with our forecheck system always high.) And once we get Silli back, maybe we can start winning key faceoffs and not keep running around in our own zone after three icings in a row?!?!?!

  49. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

BTW all you Fritz lovers. I like him. He smacked BGL around, that was great. However, his ice time is a quarter to a 1/3rd of what a fourth liner should be. That throws off the ability to roll four full lines, something that is absolutely imperative in order to keep our established high energy forecheck. Jackman will fight and handle his own. He may not mess with BGL or the big boys, but the big boys won’t mess with the little guys. Enforcers fight enforcers. This isn’t old time hockey anymore.

  50. avatar TheTinChicken says:

If we can get D-Mac, we do it. The guy has more Cup rings than our roster combined and is a team guy I’d want in my dressing room if he’d come.

The guy would be ideal for a deterrent role, but unfortunately, he’s had issues after leaving Detroit and I’d seriously HATE to see him leave Yzerman and his buddies who straightened his life out and got him back on track.

But he’s perhaps the best character guy in his realm of players (enforcers). He’s tough and respected and a winner.

That said, the Isles apparently don’t like having toughness on the roster apparently. We get a goon and he’s gone in no time. We get three big fighters and none are kept for any amount of time. We get a small inept scorer afraid of the corners and the crease and we dress him every night expecting something to happen in Tambellini……but we won’t give Fritz the time of day for a vital role he excelled in albeit briefly.

The team just needs a hockey mind running it old school. Wang and Snow are not up to the task.
