OVER TO YOU, COLIN CAMPBELL
Mottau hit on Nielsen should be under review

9:08 pm, The Rock - At 3:32 of the third period, Devils defenseman Mike Mottau nailed Islanders center Frans Nielsen with a hit to the head. Nielsen fell awkwardly and hit his head on the ice. He left the game with what appeared to be a head injury, and possibly a lower-body injury as well.

For the hit, Mottau received two minutes for elbowing. But it seemed like the kind of hit Colin Campbell addressed in his recent memo about head-hunting.

We would expect Colin Campbell to consider supplementary discipline.

In less important matters, Jeremy Colliton and all the other Sound Tigers centers - start stretching.

You make the call. Comments.

Disgrace, wheres Fritz? 5-2 and the Devs have their 4th line out the whole time, Gordon does nothing.

  2. 2 michael

next time mottau steps on the ice i better see fritz come over the boards.. i wouldn’t minda good 5 minute major for spearing right now.. head hunting our best young player shouldn’t go without repercussions!

  3. 3 Isle in LA

They are getting completely man-handled tonight. I hope Frans is OK.

  4. 4 Richie K

So if Frans is out 6-8 weeks (if its a broken ankle)…safe to say Bailey is here for the season… And THAT hit def a Suspension…call up Coli and Comeau!!!

  5. 5 Nick

Can someone please tell me why Mottau was allowed to walk out of this arena under his own power after that?

  6. 6 Joe

Bunch of crap, down by 3 goals, go out without any retribution, way to make a statement Scott.

  7. 7 Nick

I guess, looking back at it, that the large amount of time we spent short-handed at the end of the game is the reason we didn’t see Fritz or anyone else seeking retribution there.

  8. 8 michael

how did hunter get a game misconduct and not mottau by the way?

  9. 9 Chris TMC

The officiating in this game was goddamn friggin PUTRID. Why the hell is it perfectly fine to do something like this to an Islanders player??? And after he did it, it was the Islanders who were down players- NOT them. Matching penalties, giving the jerk only 2 minutes for a dirty shot to the head, then Mottau was skating around happy as can be. Meanwhile, OUR player is hurt and who cares, right???

    DISGUSTING.

If the NHL doesnt give Mottau more than 5 games, where the hell is the justice???

  10. 10 Pat

I love Scott Gordon as our coach - has a lot of potential - but why dress Fritz if you won’t use him? I know that penalty Campo took at the end could have cost us a chance to retaliate - but clearly - Gordon has to grow a pair and insist his team respond to these physical manhandling other teams will chuck at us. NOT ACCEPTABLE - Fritz should have killed that last penalty….and a Devil along the way.

  11. 11 mike

what a disgrace, put Fritz on the ice and let him take a piece out any fn devil. Gordon sucks, f his system, Nice job having that punching bag jackman on the team. why can’t we establish some type of toughness identity, we lose and we get our asses kicked every fn year. im so sick of these losers

  12. 12 islesfaninNC

UNBELIEVEABLE!!! First of all to come out even up after that DIRTY hit is DISCUSTING! Then to not for the Isles to Personally address the issue with Mottau I cannot understand, Why call up Fritz then?

  13. 13 mike

gordon sucks, grow a pair, this is hockey, not fn soccer. why do we suck so bad at everything??

  14. 14 dmen77

    oh come on Gordon

Fritz is there for one reason. Send him out there tonight, who cares when we play them again. It sends the message that teams can do whatever they want.

“We’ll pay you back next Tuesday if you give us a cheap shot today.” (Wimpy) LOL

  15. 15 dmen77

A little tug and stick carries the same penalty as an elbow and butt-end to the head.

The refs sucked this game….not that the Isles deserved to win, but the refs did not help matters.

Fritz is a waste of a spot on the bench if he wasn’t out there to make someone pay for a cheap shot to the head and cause our best young player to seriously (it appeared) injure his leg/knee.

I’ve seriously had enough of Tambellini too. He just doesn’t show me anything. Call up 2 or 3 hot players from B-Port and send Tambellini and Fritz packing.

The 3 game winning streak has been wiped from my memory in those 60 minutes we just played tonight.

Back to thinking we’ll get a top 2 pick with more games like tonight.

  16. 16 Nick

And what a shock, all the same people who were praising Gordon to the high heavens now want his head on a stake after the next loss.

Look, it was abysmal that Mottau or some Devil didn’t pay for it, but we have 4 more games to do it and we need to think about Buffalo tomorrow night.

  17. 17 Shoe

Well, the devil hosts claimed on the postgame that the hit wasn’t bad and should not be reviewed by the league…..

  18. 18 JC Frank

How was the hit not a double minor at least? What was different then that and the one that got Pock 5 games?

  19. 19 Matt King Isles 13

    not colliton. trevor smith please.

  20. 20 Chris TMC

The refs are the ones that screwed up BIG TIME tonight… place the blame where it truly belongs. Players will always do what they can get away with. And when youre playing the Islanders, that apparently is a LOT.

  21. 21 Nick

JC, I don’t know….Pock sticks his elbow out because he got beaten and panicked. Match penalty plus 5 game suspension. Mottau lines up Nielsen and butt-ends him in the face with his arms up as well. Minor penalty canceled out by Hunter sticking up for his teammate. This is definite proof the instigator rule needs to go, and there needs to be some kind of fairness in this.

I realize the tendency for homerism, such as with Weight’s hit on Brandon Sutter. However, that hit was totally different - arms down, stick down. Pock got his arm up, Mottau had both his arm and his stick up. Easy call to me.

  22. 22 Willis

I missed Gordon’s comments after the game, what did he say?

  23. 23 mrlbem

I’m glad I wasn’t home tonight to watch the game. Nielsen goes down to a cheap shot and we do nothing? What gives? Oh, and by the way, not only do I make sure that Motteau doesn’t walk out under his own power, but I have one of our guys take a run at one of their skilled players. Screw being the victim all the time.

  24. 24 Dadi

Scott Gordon is small AHL pussy…

  25. 25 On Edge

I wanted to see Fritz out there on the PK when Motteau (sp?) was on the point and drop them in the last two minutes. If I was coaching your damn right he’d have been out there being useful. No way does that go unanswered.

I have to say it also crossed my mind about Sutter wanting to give payback to the hit on his kid by Weight. Probably nothing to it but it did cross my mind.

Back to this game…Motteau should have gotten a game misconduct for intent to injure. I totally supported suspension of Pock. In fact I’ve been on record saying any head hit like that give the offending player 20 games. That will reduce the cheap shots. Wonder if Colin Campbell will look at this thru his rag glasses and not take any action. Here’s betting that there is no suspension or minimal at best. Would love to be surprised.

  26. 26 JPinVA

Why hasn’t anybody mentioned this as RETALIATION FOR BRANDON SUTTER?????

  27. 27 Pride-N- Passion NYI Hockey~

look at these comments by some Botta,

such as the #24 then continue to cower down to those who say im a problem here?

    thats too funny.
Read my last two postings, on the previous entry, tell me guys, is my view offending?
c’mon wow its becoming a circus!
And somehow i’m the scape goat but vulagrity & excess postings on pure dribble are excepted & un-challeneged.. took about double -standards..
    i’m just saying!
    lets go Isles!

  28. 28 Dadi

P-N-P, I wrote down #24, you have some problems? So this is the right time for me to tell you that I’m sick of reading your BS…every single day…

  29. 29 JPinVA

First of all let’s just wish the best to Frans, who really was coming into his own. Let’s hope it’s not that serious… not even for the Isles sake, but for his.

Secondly… Gotta say it. Scott Gordon FLINCHED. He showed the first sign of being the worst thing you can be in hockey… it starts with a “P” and rhymes with anything that ends with USSY!

Thirdly… the double ticky-tack… what in the Mother of Stan Fischler was I watching tonight…

If Mottau doesn’t get at least 5 games… and sutter 30 days (that’s right, THIS WAS A BOUNTY HIT… NO DOUBT!!!) then Isle fans should do the following.

Send all junkmail (credit card offers, radio shack fliers, pennysavers, everything except victoria secret catalogs) to THE NHL C/O Gary Bettman. Make him promote Colin Campbell to his Director of Mail filing.

Send all Spam to GBettman@nhl.com. Maybe six months of JESUS LOVES YOU PPT presentations will clog up the NHL’s email server and they won’t be able to conduct their DESTROY THE ISLANDER’S campaign from a central location anymore.

    my bs?
lol.. yea’ okay your really educated in your one word four letter response!
great stuff for the kids to read.

more respect for a debater , then a cheap shot artist like yourself.
Add some cerebral cortex to it & gain some respect & credibility on Hockey talk
    lets go Isles!

  31. 31 JPinVA

    CB,
Sutter getting back for his SON has to be the angle on this story… It just couldn’t be more obvious.

Is that irresponsible? He very possibly could have ended the career of a promising young player… that was so close to being Joe Thiesman-esque… but LT was just playing a man’s sport like a man… Mottau was trying to get the $5K bounty that was on the blackboard at the rock.
PURELY SPECULATION… but I’d have no problem putting that in Brent’s face man to man. That is twice as cowardly as gordon not retaliating with Fritz… who he left three kids with promise in Bridgeport for.
This is so bad on soooo many levels!

  32. 32 James

JPinVA… gotta say, that same thought crossed my mind (re: Sutter and possible intentional run at Nielsen).

Disappointing game from start to finish.

Now, regarding Colin Campbell… allow me to share my thoughts on our League Disciplinarian in just a few short sentences:

…On second thought, I’ll reserve judgment.

He should be suspended though, if the leaguewide memo is to be taken at face value. For more than five games, too, since this is the third incident in about ten days.

  33. 33 Vlad from Brooklyn

I have heard about unfair referee calls against Isles for a long time and still hoped it was just misuderstandings which could have happen to any team. But after tonight’s game my opinion became rock solid. Now, the question is WHY this is happening practicaly in every game when Islanders are on the ice?! And why the Isles organization does not respond to this at all. Is it a TABU in the league to challenge the poor judgments of the officials? How about a 5 game suspension without pay for calling 2 min for instigating and 10 min miscoduct to Hunter? Or now the definition of standing up for your teammate is “instigating”? How about another 5 game suspention for NOT blowing a whistle on the delay penalty when the puck is between goalkeeper’s and defencmen’s hockey sticks (which in all other games it would be called a control of the puck)? The list of questions is pretty big, but I think everyone on this blog knows what I’m taking about.
Sutter got his revenge? I can’t wait what NHL and all the hockey press has to say about Mottau’s little adventure.
And I salute to McDonald! What a great piece in the net! Never gives up. These are the true spirit and skills of NHL goalkeeper.

  34. 34 JPinVA

    Vlad,
There is a great piece by CB which details what happened the last time the Islanders (namely Mike Milbury) blasted the NHL officials with a little documentary.
Yeah… the Islanders (in our opinion) get hosed more than most teams…
and there’s a simple way to stop it.
    REMOVE THE SUBJECTIVE from officiating.
Other sports are trying to do it… the NHL (UNDER BETTMAN) is making officiating MORE SUBJECTIVE.
I haven’t been this upset since the dog ate my Mark Bavaro Bobblehead!
All of these damn obstruction penalties are RUINING THE GAME. You give somebody 2 minutes for putting their stick across the midsection of another player… then during the powerplay you watch the defenseman cross-check an opposing forward across the neck for 45 seconds…
    WHO IS IN CHARGE HERE????

    GARY BETTMAN!!!

  35. 35 Ebz

They always say that the severity of the injury will determine the length of the suspension. We’ll just have to wait and see what good ol’ Collie will do…. between the elbow and clothesline it should be a lengthly suspension. I also think Fritz should have been out there the next shift after that fiasco…. but Gordon said he didn’t think that was the right move in his postgame comments…..

Tamby, Gervais, and Hunter all looked terrible out there tonight. I know Hunter sticked up for Frans, but he did absolutely nothing else in the game. I’m sick of Tamby missing the net and Gervais getting skated around like he is standing still not even looking to throw his body around. The same with Hunter….the game has SKATED right by him. Jackman, although he got his face pounded, looks a hell of alot better than Hunter with 1/4 of the ice time…..what gives?

Big Mac looked as good as he could be, no help in front cuz the refs blew to many calls and the deflections were to good. Get em tomorrow Joey!!!

On to Buffalo….looking for a better effort from those mentioned…… INCLUDING THE COACH!!!!!

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!! !!!

  36. 36 Paul

Hope no one is holding their breath waiting for Campbell.

  37. 37 Pete DeBenedetto

#1. Sutter is not sending Mottau for a bounty.

#2. Was at the game, saw Fritz standing for at least the whole time Nielsen was on the ice and escorted off…thinking he was going in….but nothing. Curious. Why have the roster spot? I can see if it was 5 min or less in the game, but there were plenty of opps to get him in one more shift. Nielsen was clearly the fastest Islander on the ice….but if you remember in the second perion…almost got wiped by White with his head down….just can’t cut across the middle of the ice in this league.

#3. Mottau has got to get at least 8 games.

#4. Cut the losses with Tambellini….no heart at all…never gets dirty. Send him out west with his father in Edmonton, who cares if he scores 30 out there some day. It’s never going to happen here.

  38. 38 B.P.

Why am I seeing so many people calling for Fritz because the Isles didn’t address Mottau. Were people not watching Hunter drop the gloves with him? I mean that did happen didn’t it. Statement made folks. We aren’t the Charlestown Chiefs. Can’t make a mockery of the game even if NHL officials do. Want to make a statement, turn the game around and beat them on the scoreboard. Clearly we didn’t do that.

Only thing I would have liked to have seen is Gordon RAGING after the game. I know you aren’t supposed to rag on officials, but sometimes ya just gotta step up to the plate and have a Dennis Green moment.

  39. 39 Sexier than Usher usher

I was at the game in really nice seats with my wife because the above poster B.P is dodging my phone calls because I’m trying to get him to spend some money on NYI. LOL! Anyway. That Neilsen hit happened with about 16 minutes left and and we ended up bailing after the Devs scored on the 5 on 3 and at that point I still hadn’t seen Mottau back on the ice. The Devil fan behind me speculated that sutter may have benched him for the dirty hit but i haven’t seen it addressed. Can anyone confirm that Mottau played again after the hit?

  40. 40 same ol' same old

Team and coach are a joke, bring back the articles on the ice girls. at they stood up to lundquist

  41. 41 David

F**ing incredible that most in here are questioning Gordon and not pissed at Campbell for a TWO GAME SUSPENSION PEOPLE! WTF is going on here?! Motau scurried off the ice the one time he came on after the incident. He was out there for 30 seconds. Hardly enough time to send Fitz out to do anything but I guess thats Gordos fault huh? DIRECT YOUR ANGER AT THE FRONT OFFICE! Jpinva is 100% dead on in his posts.
