CHECKLIST: The 2009-2010 ISLANDERS
An interactive blogitorial, for sticks and giggles

by admin on December 20th, 2008 at 10:37 am

So here’s the plan for the weekend: a much-needed look away from the current squad – win or lose tonight in Nashville – and a look ahead.

By request in the You Play Point Blank Editor segment, here’s my wild, barely-educated guess at what next season’s opening night lineup could look like. It is not necessarily what I think the roster should look like, but rather what it will look like.

You play too, in Comments. Only one rule: just one post per reader. Don’t even try to break the rule – you will be taken down! Take your time with it – we’re here all weekend – and have fun.

Point Blank has upwards of 10,000 different readers every day on the site (yes, office hours Monday-Friday are the peak times…imagine that!). From now until Monday at noon, we’d like to see contributions from as many of you who’d like to play along.

If there’s any news today and tomorrow, we’ll drop it in ETC at the end of this entry. We will set up an entry later this afternoon to discuss tonight’s game in Nashville.

Here goes.

The 2009-10 New York Islanders

Andy Hilbert - 2009 first round pickunrestricted free agent (29 or younger)

Sean Bergenheim - Josh Bailey – Kyle Okposo

trade acquisition - Frans Nielsen – Trent Hunter

Full-time free agent enforcer - Nate Thompson - Richard Park

Mark Streit – Unrestricted free agent (29 or younger)

Andy Sutton - Matt Gilroy

Chris Campoli – Freddy Meyer

Radek Martinek

Rick DiPietro

Joey MacDonald or free agent

Head Coach: Scott Gordon

Notes:

  • Only 4 players 30 or older: Park, Martinek, Sutton, Streit

  • Place the forward lines in any order. Again, there likely will not be a clear-cut first line.

  • Not listed, but a wild prediction of most likely UFA to re-sign in ’09: Mike Comrie.

  • If some of your favorites (and mine) are not here, it is not by mistake.

  • Would have had Blake Comeau on here, but after Friday night…

  • Yes, I don’t have anyone from the current Bridgeport roster. Most likely prospects to see some time next year: forwards Jesse Joensuu and Trevor Smith and defensemen Dustin Kohn, Andrew McDonald and Jack Hillen (if re-signed).

  • Robin Figren? No. I expect he’ll need most of the season in the AHL. Mike Komisarek? The smart money has him staying in Montreal. Kirill Petrov? Too early.

  • That third-line left wing trade acquisition? No idea. Just having some fun here.

Play the game here in Comments.

it depends on what happens in the draft but here we go. o and im going to use tavares as our pick. and move him to wing.

either joey mac or free agent.
notes: wanted thompson but jackman and him are like the same so either of them fit that bill.

  2. avatar M Howard says:

You wrote first round pick for the forward position. I’m assuming you would rather see john tavares than viktor hedman. Am I right? If so, can you explain your reasoning?

notes: witt and bergie are traded in the off-season. macdonald and hilbert re-signed. weight, guerin, silly, comrie traded at the deadline. gordon and comeau make up. gionta is our big ufa splash.

  4. avatar Edturner says:

Yeah, I read the rules CB but you have to add one more question. Where will the Islander be playing next season?

Now, I am going to give the players some thought and I will answer that later.

  5. avatar Devon says:

    MacDonald

Trade: Witt, Guerin, Sillinger, Weight, Gervais, Martinek

Sign: The Brothers Sedin to matching $6.5 mil/year contracts at 4 years; Komisarek gets $4-5 million to come home.

Gordon finally sees the light on Comeau, and combines his three young studs to fill out the second line.

Trevor Smith comes up when the next guy gets hurt, and proves enough to earn a spot for next year (a la Comeau should’ve)

Mitch Fritz is a perennial healthy scratch, except in games that promise to be scrappy.

  6. avatar Mike from Philly says:

Ok here we go, now alot depends on the draft and if the new arena is approved by the spring so I am going to base this off us actually getting things to go our way for a change….

  8. avatar Steve says:

The only chance for survival is drafting Tavares or Hedman. Then we must break the bank to sign hometown, Islip Terrace raised Komisarek, the next Islander Captain! If at least 1 of those 3 is not in an Islander uniform next year, all is lost!

  9. avatar Islanders1984 says:

CB you really think Witt will be gone, what a shame if thats true. Such a huge mistake to fire Laviolette. Nothing agianst Gordon, But I would take Peter Laviolette Tommorow

  10. avatar ny711ot says:

CB,,, Do I sense a bit of discord with u and coach gordon, as he is now trying to excuse away our poor play? why not a review of his job to date as one of your blogs? base it on the performance of the team in various scenarios and if necessary how they would be remedied with coaching and positional adjustments….

this team looks all out of sorts in their own end.

  11. avatar Ferdinand says:

    Nice article….

Well Mike Komisarek won’t sign with us, because he’s gonna be the next capitain of this team.

We sign Higgins 2-4 millions per year
We sign Antropov 4-5 millions per year
We sign Orr 1 million per year
We sign Kovalev or Afinogenov 3-4 millions per year

    Comeau Antropov Kovalev/Afinogenov
    Higgins Bailey Okposo
    Hilbert Nielsen Hunter
    Orr Thompson Park

    Sutton-Hedman
    Streit-Witt
    Campoli-Meyer

    Dipietro
    Mcdo

  12. avatar Drive45 says:

The Islanders must keep losing this year (and maybe next)to land Tavares and Taylor Hall (in 2010). It will bring the fans and respect back. Milbury is no longer here to trade away the great young prospects. How one man can do so much damage? I like the young lineups mentioned.

  13. avatar Brian says:

CB, do you feel there is any chance that the Isles are able to land a useful prospect for any of their veterans at the deadline that will be able to crack the lineup next season?

  14. Gionta – Tavares – Okposo
    Comeau – Bailey – Hossa
    Bergenheim – Nielsen – Hunter
    Hilbert – Park – Jackman

    Streit – Komisarek
    Hillen – Witt
    Campoli – Meyer
    Gilroy

    DiPietro
    MacDonald

    First Call-Ups:
    - Tambellini
    - Joensuu
    - Figren
    - Smith

    Signings that May Occur:
    - Hamonic
    - Rhakshani
    - Petrov (Summer 2010 at the earliest)

  15. avatar B.P. says:

    UFA – Neilsen – Hunter
    Joensuu – Bailey – Okposo
    Bergie – Park – Hilbert
    Sim – Colliton – Jackman

    Bouwmeester – Streit
    Komisarek – Martinek
    Hedman – Sutton

    7th- Meyer/Hillen

And ANOTHER top 5 pick will be ours no doubt rolling with that group of forwards.

  16. avatar Matt Scordato says:

CB…way to early to even being projecting on this, granted it’s just for fun, but is our team so miserable, so pathetic that here we are, the season isn’t even 1/2 over yet and its come to this? Answer: YES!!

Keep it up boys, losing is for your own good.

  17. avatar Rob says:

Chris, agree with the lines… I would insert Comrie because i feel the first round pick is going to be Hedman who will be on D. Off topic, but important this losing has to stop. I was not expecting much. But i was not expecting this. Id let Gordon go. Laviolette is out there. Lets bring him back and go from there. He is the guy who brought this franchise back once already. I know you disagree and would like to hear your comments on a blog.

  18. avatar Steve C. says:

Renovation starts in summer for Nassau Coliseum
    GM-Garth Snow
    Head Coach-Peter Laviolette
    Assistant Coaches-Ken Morrow, Bryan Trottier
    G-DiPietro
    G-McDonald
    First Line:
    Okposo-Bailey-FA (Sykora, Tanguay?)
    Second Line:
Bozak-Tavares-Player from a trade (Guerin, Weight, Martinek and a draft pick at trading deadline)
    Third Line:
    Hunter-Nielsen-Comeau
    Fourth Line:
Hilbert-Park-Thompson/Jackman/Fritz (need an enforcer to beat the pulp out of the other goons in the NHL to protect!)
    Defense: Streit-Komisarek
    Gilroy-Witt
    Campoli-Meyer

  19. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

Scordato- Losing is not for the boys own good. It’s for the franchises own good as well as the fans. It must suck to be a player that hustles their ass off and still is in the loss column every night.

I believe that Weight, Comrie, Sillinger and Sim will be moved at the deadline. I know everyone has a love affair with MacDonald but he has been awful most of the time. I would give Jackman a spot but I dont believe they will.

Other UFA’s I think we will look at are Havlat, Brashear, Blake (buyout), Scuderi, Nittymaki and Backman.

I don’t think the team will get too many new faces. But here it goes.

    In no line order

    Centers: Bailey, Comrie, Frans, Nate
    RW: Okposo, Hunter, Park, Jackman
LW: Hilbert, Bergie, Comeau, (FA or draft)
D: Sutton, Campoli, Striet, Hillen, Meyer, Gervais or trade
    G: DiPietro, Joey Mac

    Steve

  29. Obviously our weakest link this year is defense and M. Streit is our best Dman according to another teams scout (agreed). I think Witt/Sutton will both be gone, Gordon’s system needs quick skating Dman that can push the puck up the ice. Tavares must be #1 draft choice, this team needs offensive star for the long term. I don’t think Comeau will make team, something not right between him and Gordon. CB, this is really cool fun, especially knowing everyone else is wrong and I’m the only one right (gee-gee-gee-gee-gee-gee)

  31. avatar Isles Fan in Ulster County says:

Truthfully, I think this is a pointless exercise, but it does help to forget about the lost season.

My wish list? I was behind Flash in the beginning, and up until last night. Now, I’d like to see a coach that doesn’t give his system a free pass, and blame it on the personnel. The Islanders may not be stacked with talent, but you have to play towards your strengths–the system may be excellent, but you have to adapt. Gordon has shown that his system lacks serious defensive chops.

    Here is my future Islanders:
    C-Bailey, Tavares, Nielsen, Park
LW-Comeau (he and Go-Go finally kiss and make up), Bergenheim, FA, 2008 pick, enforcer
    RW-Hunter, Okposo, Guerin, B-port player
D-Streit, Campoli, Meyer, FA, Hillen, Sutton

  32. avatar jon says:

Two years ago the Isles made the playoffs. Now we are a laughingstock. And Garth Snow is doing a good job? Hmmm

  33. avatar jbranny says:

What makes anyone including you Chris, think the Isles will be able to land Matt Gilroy? They can’t offer him any more money than any other team and right now the Islanders is not a very attractive team to play for.

  34. avatar jbranny says:

I would also get rid of Martinek (injuries), Witt (too slow and not committed to Gordon) and Sutton (injuries and turnovers).

  35. Here is my rendition of the 2009-2010 NY Islanders:

Sean Bergenheim – Josh Bailey – Kyle Okposo
Trent Hunter – Franz Nielsen – Jeff Tambellini
    Andy Hilbert – 2009 1st Rounder – Blake Comeau
Tim Jackman – Nate Thompson – Richard Park

    Freddy Meyer – Chris Campoli
    Andy Sutton – Mark Streit
Radek Martinek – 2009 Unrestricted Free Agent/2009 1st Rounder/Solid Prospect Recieved in a trade at the 2009 Trade Deadline

    Rick Dipietro
    Joey MacDonald

Where I disagree with Chris Botta:
Unless the Islanders pick up additional bonafide prospects that inch out Tambellini and Comeau for roster spots, I can’t foresee the Islanders giving up on these two guys. The only concern will be if the two of them end up being exposed to waivers and get plucked. I think that’s more of a concern for Tambellini than it is for Comeau. There are too many prospects in the islanders system that would benefit from a year or two in bridgeport. Comeau and Tambellini do not fit into that category. The only consideration is that Tambellini is no longer with the Islanders. Which I think would be a poor decision. He has the speed and he has a great shot when he uses it. Give him more time.

Tim Jackman has handled himself fine in fights. Plus, he actually has been creating scoring chances for himself. There’s not many players who can play the little minutes that he does and still is able to create opportunities (if only he would bury a few of them…) and is not a defensive liability (Don’t I see him on that penalty kill sometimes?).

    The Departed:
Doug Weight – Traded at the 2009 Trade Deadline for a 1st Rounder in 2009 or 2010 + Solid prospect +/- additional darft pick (Anything less would be maddening) (Please read my prior post just below)
Bill Guerin – Traded at the 2009 Trade Deadline for hopefully a 1st or 2nd Rounder in 2009 or 2010 or a solid prospect
Mike Sillinger – Traded at the 2009 Trade Deadline for hopefully at least a mid round draft pick or a half solid prospect
Mike Comrie – Traded at the 2009 Trade Deadline…Hopefully he starts putting up numbers over the next quarter of the season in order for the Islanders to get an early round draft pick or a solid prospect
Brendan Witt – Traded at the 2009 Trade Deadline for an 2009 early round draft pick
Jon Sim – Late round draft pick if we’re lucky. Otherwise bought out of his contract.
Bruno Gervais – Still in the Islanders system
Tom Pock – Somewhere in this world

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Islanders were to sign Mike Komiserak who is due to be an urestricted free agent? He would be a great replacement for Brendan Witt.

In the end, the Islanders should aim to get several more solid prospects into their system and lose some of their older players. And don’t forget to continue to groom the ones that are already in an Islanders uniform.

  37. avatar dmen77 says:

I’ve got an A and a B. I think we are going to finish in the bottom 2, maybe even worst overall. For argument’s sake, I will say we end up with #1 overall. We are in dire need of either Tavares or Hedman, and I really believe Snow’s decision has to be made on what he has a better chance of doing – signing a big name forward, or signing a big name defenseman:

    A – drafting Tavares

    Comeau-Bailey-Okposo
    Bergenheim-Tavares-Hunter
    Guerin-Nielsen-Weight
    Parros-Park-Thompson/Hilbert
    Jackman

    Streit-Komisarek
    Campoli-Sutton
    Martinek-Meyer
    Gervais/Hillen

    DiPietro
    MacDonald

    B – Drafting Hedman

    Comeau-Bailey-Okposo
    Bergenheim-Nielsen-Hunter
    Petrov-Comrie-Gionta
    Parros-Park-Hilbert/Thompson
    Jackman

    Streit-Sutton
    Campoli-Hedman
    Martinek-Meyer
    Gervais/Hillen

    DiPietro
    MacDonald

If you go with “A” and draft Tavares, we should try to sign Guerin and Weight (I didn’t say re-sign as I believe both will be traded at the deadline), then you go after a big name defenseman like Komisarek.

If you go with “B” and draft Hedman, we need to make a splash at forward…and this time it doesn’t even need to be in free agency – we need to get Petrov here early. Sign Comrie (also traded at the deadline), keep the youth movement going and build for the future.

Both situations show the NEED to sign Parros to protect our youth.

Now that I looked at what I wrote, it appears B is the way to go to building for the future. Build from the net out and sprinkle in free agent forwards when the time is right.

  46. avatar JayK says:

There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Guerin or Weight is going to bring us a first rounder. Nobody is going to trade a 1st rounder for a rent-a-player.

But if we could get a second rounder for Weight, which I think is possible, it gives us five of the top 60 picks in June. That would be sweet.

The only way Petrov will be here is if oil prices stay as low as they are. Paychecks won’t go through and players will come to the nhl again. We will have the 2nd overal pick and choose Taveres. Higgins and Komisarek will not come here, although I would love to see Long Island talent on the Islanders. They will be signed by Montreal long before UFA. Guiren will be resigned. He may or may not be traded. Him resigning all depends on how/if his trade is handeled by managemnet. Witt is not leaving. Tamby will be packaged with Weight at the tradeing deadline. Gordan will be here to coach another year.

    Dustin Byfuglien(Trade Chi) Collitton/BOZAK(cfa) Jackman

    Komisarik Bieksa (from Van)

I’d like a Shea Weber type even if it is acquiring blue chip prospect near ready to play. Matt Gilroy (CFA signing)
    Hillen

    DiPietro
    MacDonald

    Possible others Park & Walter.
Ridderwall, Figren, Gratchev and a few others join Bridgeport making it more of a place for developing legit Isles talent.

    *This is a true rebuild.
**This team is much bigger then current version.
***This team is much more hard hitting. Every d-man can also play on the PP.
***This team has numerous talented fighters including a legit heavy weight who can really play the game in Byfuglein (who is probably already friends with Okposo).
****No one will mess with Islander goalies anymore.
*****This team is much more talented then this years version and can grow together.
******Can role 4 legit lines who can all score and 3 legit d-pairs.
*******THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SNOW NOT TO GET BIEKSA AND BYFUGLEIN RIGHT NOW.
********TRADE all players and prospects who don’t fit.
*********Try not to pick after the 4th round in this years draft. The team had two drafts with tons of picks and have restocked the system. Now it is about Quality over quanitity. Package the later picks to move up. Make sure the team gets D Doughty out of the draft and other big physical guys who can play.
*********Hire a coach who specializes in coaching defense.
*********Bring back Roland Melanson as the goalie coach.
    *********Start building the lighthouse.
**********Implement the toughest off season conditioning program the NHL has ever seen. Do it like the NFL where the guys easily add 15lbs of muscle in a summer.
********If Josenau and Petrov aren’t ready then fill in their spots but it will only be a year.

-This is a complete pipe dream by the way. But OVERPAY if possible. We have an absurd amount of capspace this summer. Our prospects still need time in the AHL, to make a difference in the NHL. Yeah, OKposo, Bailey and co. are “keeping up” but neither are lighting it up.

Not terrible but i see some glaring mistakes. Both Guerin and EITHER Weight or Comrie will head up the 1st line next year. Jackman will be a fixture on the 4th line. Gordons system isn’t made for an enforcer who cant skate. I can see them trying to move Bergie. He shows flashes but seems he can not get over the hump. On D, Sutton does not fit this system and will be moved. Hedman will be the Isles first round pick and make the team out of camp. I agree with most everything else.

Being an older fan, I am more apt to be skeptical about any ” rebuilding” plan.It is all about the money and until Wang gets The Lighthouse approval, we are going to go the “rebuilding” ( aka CHEAP) way.If the Islanders wanted to, they could get decent free agents by overpaying( like the Mets had to do with Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran).I mean Shea was just as much a dump as the Coliseum.Like I said, it’s all about the money.

Might be a pipe dream, but the three Slovaks are looking to play together next year and we’d have the cap space and Tavares (wishing). Otherwise maintain the re-build, which wouldn’t hurt my feelings.

There are currently 2 unemployed coaches who have won a cup within the last 5 years. Imho, the conjecture on next years lineup pales in comparison as to who will coach them.

    Rick DiPietro
    Joey MacDonald

    Coach: Peter Laviolette

    Here’s how it goes down:

The mess gets worse over the next few weeks and Wang and Snow have no choice but to can Gordon. Laviolette is hired, DP is healthy, and the team starts to improve, especially on D. Tambellini comes back and starts to score some goals.

Guerin (NJ), Weight (Buff), Sillinger (Pitt), and Sim (Clm) are all moved at the trade deadline for 3d thru 6th rd picks.

Snow also takes advantage of Tamby’s improved trade value and moves him and a pick to Phoenix for tough-guy middleweight Daniel Carcillo.

The Isles choose fourth in the draft and take Brampton Battalion center Matt Duchene.

Mike Comrie realizes his demand in the market is low and re-signs a multi-year deal to stay comfy on LI.

Jason Blake is bought out by Toronto. His buddy DP convinces Mr. Wang to bring him back.

The Lighthouse is finally shovel-ready by July 2009.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009-2010 New York Islanders.

  76. avatar Marc says:

I’d like to the Isles to keep Bailey, Okposo, Bergenheim, Nielsen, Comeau, Streit, Sutton, Witt, and Park. If Sutton and/or Witt has great trade value at the deadline, go for it! You know the old saying… less is more… less talent = more (higher draft pick.) DiPietro’s not going anywhere. Hopefully the veterans are healthy and traded close to the deadline for prospects & picks. I wouldn’t mind re-signing Guerin, Weight, Sutton, Witt and/or Comrie as free agents if they are rented out for the rest of this season. For those of you who put “UFA” as part of your wish list, realize that the likelihood of a “first line” player signing with the Isles is probably less than slim or none. The Lighthouse & draft pick are my two biggest concerns, in that order. I am also willing to see what the Snowman does the rest of this season before deciding if he should be retained. I’m not thrilled with many of Commissioner Gordon’s actions and statements but am also willing to let the losses continue to mount to get the coveted top pick, while hopefully the youth movement continues. For now, can you please put Okposo & Bailey on the same line, perhaps with Park?
