COMMENT GUIDELINES
These are effective immediately

by admin on December 2nd, 2008 at 9:15 am

(UPDATED, 2/8/10)

Islanders Point Blank is a blog that hopefully generates passionate discussion in the Comments space. Our hope is to make sure the Comments area does not turn into a message board, or a place where a few readers believe it is their personal space to dominate and write blogs of their own.

1. Contribute something to the discussion at hand ONLY, not the discussion you want to start. If you’d like to start your own topic, please join one of the many outstanding message boards, including Islandermania.

2. Comments should be no longer than 100 words. Writing a post without anything resembling grammar or correct spelling sucks for you, the readers and the blog, so please make an effort.

3. Commenters are not allowed to dominate the space. No more than 3 Comments per story.

4. Get your facts straight. Write something as fact that’s not, the entire post will be deleted.  Make up a statement about how I wrote something, when I did not, it will be gone.

5. Saying to fellow readers “Are you dumb”? and “You’re a moron” is prohibited. Show some respect. Declaring who’s a real Islander or not on an Islanders blog doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

6. No profanity, no loopholes around profanity by putting in — and, even more offensive, no ALL CAPS.

7. If you would like discuss something found on Katie Strang’s Newsday blog, or compliment her for a story or scoop, please do so on Katie Strang’s Newsday blog. Katie deserves your audience and participation. Same for all the other Islanders blogs out there.

8. If you have a story or video clip you’d like me to see or consider for linking on the site, please email it to me. I link to hockey blogs often in my stories. Please do not use the Comments space to sell, trade or even give away tickets or anything else.

I thank you for your understanding, consideration and participation on the site…CB

Glad you did this – just sorry you had to.

  2. avatar Jack L says:

I agree Chris. A short comment or two seems logical. Debates are best left to islandersmania. If I wanted read that website I would. I just want to see some short comments about articles to guage fan interest.

  3. avatar Hurrapop says:

I know its hard to believe coming from me (since I have said stupid things and gotten at people here in the past) But this is a great idea CB. Lets keep this website a pleasure to read! I’ve cooled down, and a lot of other people who post here need to do the same!

Keep up the great work CB!
    GO ISLES!

  4. avatar fauxrumors says:

    1) “lifetime misconduct penalties.” Something the NHL should consider for Sean Avery? ; )

  5. avatar bCarey says:

at the next PB night, I plan to sit at the bar and reminisce about the good old days. if that’s okay with you, CB.

  6. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

    One word – RESPECT.

  7. avatar Mike from Philly says:

    Chris,
Thanks for doing this, alot of passionate readers here were getting tired of some of the junk people were posting.

    Respect the Blog Baby!

  8. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Good job. Lets keep this site rollin…

  9. avatar Greg says:

Wow, the Islanders were known for controlling the media and it looks like you are doing the same.

100 words, don’t link to other stories!

Pretty soon you will be charging $20 to read your blog!

  10. avatar Chris H says:

Thanks CB. Keep the great stories coming.

  11. avatar ron says:

i thought you were going to talk about the Ramones.

  12. avatar BeatleBailey says:

And to think I was just planning to start writing a novel on here..each post a chapter!..lol

  13. avatar TuxTax says:

Good job CB! Anyone sick of the phrase “surgically repaired hip”? Just a thought…

  14. avatar flatpoint says:

Well done. While the site remains a must read, the comments section was becoming unbearable.

  15. avatar Marc says:

Agreed w/Peter Puck, above. Unfortunate, but if you don’t like the new rules, then you’re probably one of the people they were created in response to and you just don’t get it, anyway. Keep up the great work, Chris, and thanks for what you do.

  16. avatar love me some sillinger says:

Great idea, CB. Thanks for all you do!!

  17. avatar guerin13 says:

thanks chris, the comments section was getting out of hand.

  18. avatar Steve says:

    Thank You!!!!

  19. avatar Spinner9 says:

Applause, applause, applause…well done Mr. Botta! Lets hope the tone here in the response section maintains a sense of decorum that you don’t get in other blogs such as Newsday. No need to get nasty with people just because they have different opinions.

  20. avatar timm says:

hey chris, much respect for this move. there’s a few fans who seem to do this on every blog available (see: logan’s, gallof’s) not even to mention islandermania. it’s getting old.

  21. avatar Pat says:

    Gabba Gabba Hey !

    Rules are duly noted.

    Stick to your guns.

    Pat

  22. avatar Jason says:

Thoroughly agree. What you’re trying to omit is usually what keeps me from posting. Thanks CB.

  23. avatar Islander505 says:

Geez, and I thought Colin Campbell was harsh.

  24. avatar Netminder39 says:

    Thanks Chris,

At least we can read all the comments in a shorter amount of time. All respect to you.

  25. avatar Barbara Pignataro says:

Great Chris…some just want to inflate their own egos. It needed to be done.

  26. avatar Joey303 says:

    Lets Go Islanders!!!

  27. avatar DINO says:

    Good Job!

  28. avatar JPinVA says:

Even as a number one offender… I’m all for it. Sorry all. Great job Chris.

    15 words, 1 contraction.. I’m okay, right?

  29. avatar John says:

Thank you… there are enough diatribes by wanna be managers on the Newsday site and others like it. This will keep your comments site refreshing.

  30. avatar DanNOLA says:

Thanx Chris. I spend more time reading the comments sometimes than the article itself, and occasionally it’s too much to keep me reading. Are you blogging about the Ramones too? I would read that everyday.

  31. avatar Ed J says:

its ok w/me, i prefer to read short comments to get a feel on a topic anyways from islander nation, when a comment is longer then a blog, that is a problem I think. Thanks PB and keep up the great work!!

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!

  32. avatar Bob says:

CB, I agree the comments were becoming unreadable

  33. avatar Islander505 says:

Wow, if nothing else, this blog entry by Chris and the subsequent comments has manifested some antipathy towards those of us who comment on “The Newsday Blog”.
(These comments might even be in violation of Article 3 of Botta’s Rules-but that’s for Chris to determine).

C’mon folks, can’t we all just get along?
    Afterall, We’re All Islanders, no?

Proudly wearing my “Newsday Commenter” label….from two time zones away.

  34. avatar stumpy32 says:

I love the reference to the Ramones…very good stuff CB.

  35. avatar cgs878 says:

Yes, we can all get along… just do it in 100 words or less. You can rant on “HB.com” or something. Thx CB.

  36. avatar James says:

I view this issue with commenting–bearable, unbearable, or otherwise– as a good problem to have. It’s reflective of a passionate fan base that cares deeply about this team. Agreed, we all need to keep our commenting in check from time to time, but I’d rather have the passion than indifference or silence.

  37. avatar Chris TMC says:

I am very glad you did this, Chris. I love your articles and what we say here should only compliment whatyou are already talking about!

Ill add this- since some of the people here who wrote very long posts have had a few valid points to make, they really should start their own blogs. There is room in this world for lots of points of view and discussion. If you have something to say, you should say it! (Just not in Chris Bottas comments section lol!) :)

  38. avatar Travelchic59 says:

    Thank the Web Gods!!!

  39. avatar Darren says:

    No Ramones..=)

  40. avatar Steve S says:

    Thank God.

  41. avatar Rich says:

CB< You never answered my question about the not taking a million dollars to divulge in a book about ur PR time with the Isles and potential trades..that is just a lie. There is no confidentiality agreement. CB, sorry Bro your not that big of a superstar and you can’t respond to that simple question.

  42. avatar shish says:

I come on here to read YOUR blog, not to read fellas going back and forth. we’re all supposed to be on the same page here.

    glad you set it straight.

  43. avatar JPinVA says:

I really do hope that people DON’T STOP commenting here because of this. I do enjoy reading other people’s opinions, no matter how lengthy. If done in good taste, shouldn’t this comments section be a conversation about the insight brought forth on the blog?
this might be evident to some, but if you just want to read the blog, READ THE BLOG… and move on.
CB, I’d think that you would be proud to have inspired so much conjecture. If there are space concerns, then I am totally out of line. But for those of us out of towners, and some in towners, it’s hard to find anybody else who even cares about this organization…nevermind takes the time to voice their opinions.
    —————————————
Being that I’m probably going to get the boot (NO BLOG FOR YOU!!)… Happy Entrails Everybody.

  44. avatar Swan says:

    Well done, C.B.

  45. avatar kingbet123 says:

It had to be done. Certain people went….just a bit overboard.

  46. avatar tom says:

if someone posts 40 words in one post… can they get 60 runover words to add to the next one? lol. just kidding.

  47. avatar Dmarie says:

I hear ya Captain! keep em’ short, sweet an to the point. :)

  48. Nicely stated. Hope it helps. That’s one of the hard parts about running a Web forum: You really do need to set some friendly guidelines like these — and reinforce them from time to time — else people run loose like it’s, well, free!

Web anarchy has its place; just not where your host politely asks you take it elsewhere. Thanks again for providing this blog, Chris.

  49. avatar Paul says:

Thank God! I was not posting as much because it started to be a Circus with the same people over and over! Dont people have Jobs! Good Stuff CB

  50. avatar Fred says:

CB, with some tweaking you can limit character count and not allow HTML tags in your comments (for links) or even a string of text like ‘http’

  51. avatar Jim From St James says:

This is probably the only site worth reading anyway…Keep up the awesome work.

  52. avatar MickeyBoy7 says:

    Islandermania?

  53. avatar Cruicky says:

To the moderator, change the comments link under catagories to point to this story. Thanks for the rules update CB.

  54. avatar Jersey Matt says:

Not to go off topic, but…..

    : )

  55. avatar C. Felix says:

I KNOW THIS IS OFF TOPIC, BUT, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL CAPS?

    (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

  56. avatar Lou Giuliana says:

Love Point Blank. Die hard Isles fan who lives in NJ and visits your site daily. Ecellent Job.
