DOUG WEIGHT WANTS TO STAY
His views, and our viewpoint, on a potential deal

by admin on December 30th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

6:15 pm - As an unrestricted free agent on a one-year deal, Doug Weight can begin negotiating a new contract with the Islanders beginning on January 1, 2009, aka Friday. That is unlikely to happen.

What’s more likely is that between now and the March 4 trade deadline, Islanders general manager Garth Snow will consider all trade offers for the veteran center. If the GM gets his price, Weight will be traded to a team that feels it can make a run at a championship.

Whether Snow extracts that price remains to be seen, and we probably won’t know for at least a month and quite possibly the full two months between now and the deadline.

Weight, who turns 38 in January, has made quite a comeback this season with the Islanders after a nightmarish 2007-08 split between St. Louis and Anaheim. In a 15-minute discussion with reporters today after practice, he made the following points:

  • In a perfect world, he does not want to be traded – although he has understood for a very long time that it is part of the business.

  • If he were traded, Weight said he was unsure what he would do. He said, “That’s not a threat,” and he would be open to evaluating all opportunities.

  • Although he enjoyed the trip from St. Louis to winning the Stanley Cup as a three-month rental with Carolina and then back to the Blues as a free agent, today Weight made it crystal clear in the gentlest way that he had no interest in doing that again. He all but ruled out re-signing here if the Islanders dealt him. He wants to be part of the solution with his current team, not a player going and coming.

  • He credits his revival, in part, to Islanders head coach Scott Gordon for “inspiring” him in a pre-season meeting and throughout the season. He also raved about Garth Snow, the organization, Long Island and Islanders fans. Weight said he feels better and is playing better than he has in years.

I pointed out to Weight the irony of it all. He doesn’t want to be traded, wants to stay with the Islanders and is playing his best hockey in years. But just as Weight knows he’s skating well, so do the visiting pro scouts frequenting the Coliseum press box.

Weight believes his play is only going to improve, now that he has recovered from a groin injury and is more acquainted with his team’s system and his teammates. If so, his value as an asset only increases.

Viewpoint: This is going to be an interesting storyline over the next two months. An NHL source told Point Blank today that the Islanders have yet to have any significant discussions about the framework of a Weight trade.

If the Islanders could get a second round pick and a B-level prospect for Weight – as of now, a reasonable bounty for a deal whether consummated this week or on March 4 – they would have to do it. Same if they could package Weight and one of their later 2s for a potential mid-to-late 2009 first-rounder. (They will not get a first-round pick or a team’s top prospect straight-up for Weight, of that you can be sure).

If the Islanders don’t get what they deem a fair price, they could discuss a one-year extension with Weight. At a time when the Islanders are on the receiving end of plenty of criticism – including from their own respected dman Brendan Witt about Gordon’s style of play – you have to wonder if it’s worth it to Gordon and Snow to trade a good player and significant advocate for a third round draft pick.

i want to trade him from a business pov but dont want because it would feel wrong. trade bostons second and weight for a first but make sure it is on mutual terms. it feels wrong but you have to do what you have to do to make this franchise work.

  2. avatar Patrick says:

I honestly believe we could get a 1st for Weight. Its just teams get so desperate especially around this time when injuries start to really take affect. I would love getting a great return but I would hate having to trade such a good guy. But you have to give to recieve.

  3. avatar jax says:

Who does he think he is? Trade his ass. The guy couldn’t get a contract if his life depended on it now he is having a good year and he wants to lay down the law. Puhleassse. Trade his old arse now before he breaks down.

  4. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Got to trade the guy, its what is best for this organization. Im a little more worried about trading guerin. The guy is a great captain. The kind of captain we all wanted Yashin to be

  5. avatar isles99 says:

weight says nice things about the organization because hes a classy guy. he did the same thing prior to being traded from the blues. being a classy guy should not distract us from doing whats right for the team which is to try to package him alone for a 2nd rounder or him and one of our 2nd rounders for a mid 1st rounder.dough weight is just saying the right things ebcause thats just the type of guy he is. i mean what is he going to say, “i want off the island”. lets do whats right for the best interests of the organization

  6. avatar felix says:

if he is traded and then next year no one is going to sign him or guerin is still on the team i guarantee he signs with the islanders over retiring or starting the season without a team. nice guy says the right things but a pick or prospect for the organization at his highest value is the way to go. sucks but that is buisness. business as the same way if he were to enter negotiations he would want more money and not necessarily compromise on a price or structure good for the team.

  7. avatar frank nyc says:

a mid to late first rounder for weight and a late second.
I would agree to that in a second.
    where can i sign?
Got to love what weight has done while here. He i a class act.
But this is about rebuilding and building a champ.
If trading Weight hastens the process then so be it.

  8. avatar Chris A says:

Keep him I’ll take a strongly motivated player any day of the week but sometimes its not as easy as that.

  9. avatar DavidNYC says:

I love Weight and his positive attitude! I believe he appreciates Gordon’s go-go style (which pushes a guy who is supposed to be at the end of his career) but it is clear that playing or simply teaming with Guerin has helped both of them as well. They are a great “couple”. Hockey is business and he has to be traded for the best deal we can get, that is certain! I think a team will need a great power play artist and his value will be more than we think BUT, I hope he comes back to the Isles. If he wants a future in hockey beyond a player, I cannot think of a better guy for this franchise and our young guys. Us fans pretend we know the business side of hockey but Snow has to be credited with signing him and knowing what could be. Weight is a great hockey man and I cannot “wait” for him to achieve 1000 pts!

  10. I’ve been wondering about this angle all season long, after closely witnessing his treatment as “Rental: Episode II” in St. Louis (where he even had a NTC) and after seeing him subsequently take to Long Island.

My hunch: He’s not going to be very motivated to pack and move again just to help some Columbus-type try to squeak into the playoffs. His heart won’t be in that, and such teams will (should) eventually realize that.

As for better teams with half a chance at the Cup, no way they pony up a 1st-rounder for him unless they suffer a serious injury to a front line player. Should be fascinating to see what Garth Snow does.

  11. avatar ken says:

If Sergei Fedorov fetched a 1st rounder last year and Adam Foote fetched a 1st rounder last year… why can we not trade weight for a 1st rounder or an already drafted 1st rounder.

  12. avatar Bill O says:

In order to rebuild a franchise, company or organization, you need top end class people. The Captain and Weight are those people along with Park. They set the foundation idealogy for the future.

  13. avatar ROB says:

I honestly dont care what we do as long as we dont give up our first rd pick – Drafting Tavares should be our priority

  14. avatar beatlebailey says:

classy guy and brings top effort every game. Will be sorry to see him go but it makes no sense to keep unless he commits to another season prior to the trade deadline. We do need some leadership on the team next year. He is a good role model for the okposo to learn from.

  15. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Doug weight is a great guy. But How many more years will he play, 1-2. We could be talking about doug weight for the next two years. Or we could be talking about the player we drafted from the Doug Weigth trade for the next 10 years

  16. avatar Dallas Mac says:

He’s gotta go. We need youth. I’m even down with wasting next year too, in oder to draft winger Taylor Hall. Tavares or bust. The future begins in 2010. Not this year. Dougy I think you are great and thanks but you gotta go.

  17. avatar beatlebailey says:

like justin pampineau for ozzie?..most prospects are suspects..not saying we shouldnt trade him if we get that no.1 from somebody just saying if he wanted to sign on for one more year at a reasonable rate it might be worth it

  18. avatar Chicken little says:

When are they going to fire the coach? We knew that the team sucked and that they have no talent but somehow this is being blamed on a coach who hasn’t even been here a full year. Ridiculous. While everyone talks about “the system” and how it doesn’t work they seem to have forgotten that you actually need talented players to work the system. Saying we should change the system to fit the players is short sighted and doesn’t project the big picture. Fire the coach though, this huge mess has got to be all his fault right? Pfffft.

  19. avatar Chicken little says:

How many coaching carreers must the Islanders destroy before they’re happy?!

  20. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

The fact that Weight (or any player) is promoting the system, coach, team, gm, Long Island, is like having a marketing director playing on the team. Vets like Guerin and now Weight are coming out telling other players how much they like it here. If Weight can sign on for another year, I say keep him. The likes of Baily, Okposo, Tambellini, Neilsen, Comeau will be another year seasoned. Comrie is the player that may land us another oick. Maybe even Witt and Sutton.
And FTR, do we need Gervais??? And I can’t believe I’m going to post this…but WILL Bergenheim be smarter next season, or is he expendable???
    Keep Weight if you can.

  21. avatar Mike from Queens says:

I love having Weight on the team, but is Guerin coming back next year? If we jettison the captain, will his best friend want to stay on Long Island to work with another bunch of kids during the twilight of his career? My guess is no, so trade him and get whatever you can for him.

Where does a guy like Guerin fit in long term, anyways? Do we want another year of Weight and Guerin, or should we sign other guys to reach the cap floor?

  22. avatar MT says:

I want Weight to stay too.

  23. avatar Islanders1984 says:

To post 20, I really hope they don’t trade Bergenheim. If we do I see Olli Jokinen the 2nd out of him, I never understood why this guy is relegated to a 4th line role many times. He is a good young talent. Only bad part about him is the penaltys.

  24. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Id prefer the pick for weight. Lets go isles

  25. Hockey teams are a business and it all relates to dollars and cents and being profitable. Emotions and personalities do not mix with smart business decisions. Trade him for the benefit of running a profitable business (keeping the fans filling the seats).

  26. avatar Chris TMC says:

Chris Botta said: “If the Islanders could get a second round pick and a B-level prospect for Weight – as of now, a reasonable bounty for a deal whether consummated this week or on March 4 – they would have to do it…”

I just cant agree with that. This team has three good 2nd round picks already, and they have enough B-level prospects. I say you hold on to Doug unless someone is nuts enough to offer far more than that.

  27. avatar 303Joe says:

I hold onto Weight unless I get a solid prospect or 1st rounder for him. Enough of getting 2nd and 3rd rounders. This team doesn’t have time to wait for these picks in 2009 to develope for 2-3 years. This teams needs an infusion of talent now. If you don’t get alot in return keep Weight for the year and it sounds like he woulds resign here for another year. No problem with that the wya he has played so far this year.

  28. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I would totaly take the 2nd rounder and B level prospect. That will definitly help we need all the help we can get. Kids and picks will help. You never know a 2nd rounder could end up like Lucic or Statsny.

  29. avatar ken says:

    or an Ogrodonkov

  30. avatar isles72 says:

I think keeping Weight and Guerin for 1 more season would be the way to go

they dont seem to mind being leaders in our rebuild and still have the skill (Weight)and the braun (Guerin)to lead by example

  31. avatar donna834 says:

I believe that Doug Weight is an asset to the Islanders as both an excellent player and a teacher for the younger players. We need both youth & experience on our team. I think Doug Weight is a perfect fit for our team. Keep him on the team.

  32. avatar JPinVA says:

the trading of doug weight hinges on the plans they have for Comrie. Are they going to take a chance at not getting taveres and being stuck with Bailey, Nielsen, Walter and thompson up the middle?

  33. avatar ny711ot says:

to keep him makes no sense other than to take ice time away from a bailey for the rest of the season. i would rather snow try to pry a young player with upside who is injured right now then simply obtain another pick. raffi torres perhaps? a package with guerin and 2nd pick for a brendan morrow type? a push for spezza? maybe none of these deals are possible. but thats why Garth gets the big bucks. I want fairly young guys here who are nhl ready to accelerate the rebuild……

  34. avatar Cincy says:

The Isles have no realistic chance to even contend for a cup for at least 3 or more years.

This means Weight’s real value to the future of this francise rests souly in his value as a mentor to the young players. A teacher who can impart some of his skill set on our more gifted youth.

So any comparison with offered draft picks must be not be made against Weight’s talent or potential for goals/assists – but only with regard to his “intangible” value.

Conclusion… anything equal or better than a mid-2nd round pick should be quickly accepted.

I’ll be sad, but it’s the right move for this team.

  35. avatar Justin M. says:

To respond to 33, if the Isles push for Spezza and land him while keeping our first round pick, than it is a safe bet to think the Isles will take Hedman with their pick. Up the middle we would then have Spezza, Bailey, Nielsen, and Park or whomever. Those are pretty solid centers if you ask me.

  36. avatar kevin says:

taking an injury prone raffi torres is not that smart. spezza would require giving up okposo and bailey and or our 1st rounder. not worth it. brendan morrow would be a lot to give up and there are not many like him.

  37. avatar Chris TMC says:

Raffi Torres? Been there, done that, no thx… just looking at his name makes me think of Janne Niinimaa- and that is absolutely horrible. As far as your other suggestions go, and them maybe not being possible, I say there is no ‘maybe’ about that!

  38. avatar Justin M. says:

It will be sad to see Weight go for a mid second round pick, unfortunately. However, as many mentioned before, what if he was part of a large deal to land a premier player who would sign an extension?

  39. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I really enjoy Doug Weight as a player and person. I wish we got him years ago and he played his entire career as an Isle. However, that being said if fair value can be had then he must be traded. I appreciate all guys like he, Guerin, Witt, and Sillinger as teaching the younger players.

Should the Isles end up with the first pick (AND THEY SHOULD…NEED TO)they will choose Tavares a center or Hedman a d-man. If they pick Tavares you’d have to imagine your top 3 centers being Tavares, Bailey, Nielsen. There are others like Collitton and Walter both of whom seem NHL ready. In a rebuild you’d want those top 3 to get the ice time.

Also, should Weight be moved before Bozak is free to sign in a couple months the chances increase of Bozak joining the Isles.

So sadly I say when value appears trade Weight and just about any other of the grey beards. I will feel we didn’t have enough time together but in the end it is for the best.

It is great is it to hear a guy praising Gordon and how much he loves playing for the Isles and living on LI.

  40. avatar Strummer's Army says:

May 2009 be the best year thus far in all of our lifes!

  41. avatar toorude says:

i am very appreciative as to what weight has done for our organization – we were the perfect marriage – nobody wanted to come here and nobody wanted doug. even larry the jerk*ff brooks made fun on the islanders (shocker) for signing him, asking why ray ferraro wasn’t considered first (i hate larry more than nick hates b.c.). and so far this year he has given us his all – much more than we hoped for. it will be sad to see him go – but not as painful as suffering through more years of basement-dwelling if we dont move him for what it is we need: talented youth.

  42. avatar ryan says:

we are “rebuilding” but you need some veteran presence to keep the kids in line and Weight and Guerin are perfect for that. I would be really disappointed to see these two go. Unless of course the package blew Snow away

  43. avatar UIF says:

Islanders1984 – Glad I’m not the only one who sees a bit of Jokinen in Bergenheim’s style of play!

  44. avatar cgs878 says:

Until Bailey, Okposo, Comeau, Tambellini, and other “new guys” start scoring 2-3 goals per game, I think that the Islanders should keep Guerin and Weight around. The veterans have been outscoring the kids at LEAST 2 to 1. Hunter, Park, Guerin, Weight, and Streit are the current “producers” for the Islanders. They’re leading by example.

  45. avatar Bob says:

I concur with Ryan. When changing the system and composition of any young team you always need a couple of old pros the young guys can go to for advise and show them the right way to work and be a professional. I would re-sign Weight for next year soon.

  46. avatar James says:

Weight’s value (a center averaging roughly a point per game, who can also play the point on the PP) probably won’t be any higher in his career than it is now.

Good guy or not, since the Isles are not contending this season, you need to sell while his value is high.

I’m sure even Doug Weight knows that. But it’s not like he’s going to come out to the media and say, “trade me right @#@$ing now!”

    (now hang up the phone)

  47. avatar James says:

Quick clarification: “Weight’s value…probably won’t be any higher in his career than it is now.”

I mean, won’t be any higher at any point from here on out… not in years past.

  48. avatar isles316 says:

Weight is a class act, but the Islanders can’t keep him if trading him will bring assets that might help the team 3 or 4 years from now. If he won’t resign here in the offseason because we traded him then that’s the chance the Isles have to take. They need to gain every asset or potential asset they can to build this team up again.

  49. avatar Jon says:

If we can’t get a early 2nd round pick for Weight, sign him for another year. I think thats reasonable…

  50. avatar jimmy says:

I think Weight would be a good fit to stay on this team for another year. Him and Billy can help teach the kids how to be a professional and how to go about their business. Also as a respected veteran of the league maybe he can sway other free agents that it isn’t all bad to come to Long Island which is what we need for players not to think this place is toxic any more

  51. avatar ShardZ says:

I think it is folly to want to trade a player just because he is old, just as it is folly to sign a player just because he is young. Weight has been scoring consistently for us. He can be a role model, teach KO and Baily how to be classy players in the league, not like Mr “punch a guy in the jewels” Crosby. He has trade value, but he also has value to our team.
Of course, if a good deal is available, it must be done. But, we’re already a team full of B-level prospects, and between the ’09 and ’08 drafts, we will have taken an absurd percentage of the 2nd and 3rd round picks. We need a more promising prospect, or a 1st round pick. Anything less is not worth it.

  52. avatar kingbet123 says:

I like both Weight and Guerin and hope they both stay but a lot can (and most likely will) happen over the next two months.

  53. avatar Isles Fan in Ulster County says:

If Weight can command a first or second round pick (unlikely to get a first) then I see the value in trading him. If any pick lower than a second, then it isn’t worth the trade since Weight wants to be a part of the solution, is thriving in the system, and has faith in the organization. It is rare to hear that players WANT to be on Long Island. Too often the media talks about how no one wants to play for the Isles, and I don’t see the value in trading away someone who wants to be here for some low pick.

  54. avatar Johnny Islander says:

“…you have to wonder if it’s worth it to Gordon and Snow to trade a good player and significant advocate for a third round draft pick.”

Uh, NO. Marc Andre Bergeron got us a 3rd last year. The offers for Weight have to be higher than that. Weight and a 2nd for a mid to late first ain’t going to fly either. Enough with the “B-level” prospects too. If that’s the best their going to get, then offer a 1yr extension, and see if we can squeeze another good year out of him.

  55. avatar JayK says:

Re: post 49. Nobody who might want Weight would be in position to be an early second-rounder anyway. Presumably, they’d be in or near the top 16. He’d get a mid to late second rounder.

  56. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Firstly … this is a business … The Isles have been shafted plenty of times on the business end of hockey the past 15 or so years .. so lets not get sentimental about a 1 year player.

I love what Doug Weight has brought to the team this year … but lets not forget he’s getting paid pretty good when no other team snatched him up … remember … he credits the Isles with reviving his game … and he’s done well … but the bottom line is wins and losses and the Isles are in last place … so has he really made a difference vs. last year? NO!!

I would welcome back both Billy and Dougie next season if we could package them or trade them individually as rentals. Whether we receive a 1st rounder, prospect trying to break in but no room, or a combination of picks / prospects or 2nd, 3rd or 4th rounders it doesn’t matter … you get what you can get …. we got nothing for Miro and Tank at all last season .. maybe we were offered nothing .. but you take the best bid and revisit re-signing them in July … The Isles’ kids even if they have Tavares will still not be ready to make a run next season … look at teams like Pens with Crosby … they missed the playoffs even with him … and how about Rick Nash?? He didn’t make the Blue Jackets an instant contender … they are still looking for a team with skill and chemistry!! So no gaurantees ..

The Isles will be rebuilding for at minimum another 2/3 years … get ready for it … If Doug Weight gives the Isles another 2nd or 3rd rounder … it might just be enough to give Garth the flexibility to make a Draft Day deal … Maybe the Isles finish to get a 5th or 6th seed … and want to trade up .. so they package the pick with their first to move up to spots to the 3rd or 4th pick … who knows??? There are too many variables and the market for players is to fluid from team to team to truly judge the worth of the players right now.

Boston might think he’s worth their 1st rounder in 09 … and if someone gets injured on a bubble team like say Philly or NJ he might be worth their first rounder … or their 2nd and 3rd … it depends on the situation at the time…

I say Garth has to feel it out … we can always resign Doug in July … I like him … I like what he brings in character and skill to the team … but we aren’t going to miss him for the last 19 or so games of the season … and he will only make the Isles possibly gain more points at the end of the season putting them in danger of losing out of the Tavares / Hedman sweepstakes … this isn’t all about Doug and that he’s such a good guy … it’s about the Isles’ LOOONGGG TERM viability … and he’s an asset right now.

Cold … yeah … but that is the business of pro-hockey … no pun intended.

  57. avatar B-ri says:

Weight said he loves LI and WANTS to be an Islanders. Fools if they trade him. They can pray that by keeping him he can influence better mid level free agents to come in…or maybe even a higher level player like how joe sakic helped persuade ryan smyth to go to COL for less money than we offered him.

  58. avatar Brian From Jersey says:

Weight says he likes it here and supports our team… so trade him off for a first rounder and he’ll come back over the summer… win-win

  59. avatar heyheyhey says:

    Weight and a 7th rounder this year and our 4th 6th and 7th next year for a 1st this year and a 2nd and 6th next year and a 4th in 2012

  60. avatar isles316 says:

I’m usually pretty receptive to people’s feelings and ideas but anyone that wants Doug Weight to not be traded really needs to think and evaluate where this team is.

This team is rebuilding and they aren’t very good period. The Isles need to gain all the picks/prospects they can before the deadline. Weight has the most value right now and it would be a huge mistake if the Isles kept him or resigned him.
I’m not sure the argument that he can pursuade free agents to come here really holds water. Do you think Weight is friendly with Kovalchuck or Gaborik or even Komisarek for that matter?
When and if the Isles turn a corner and become competative in 3 years or so, it’s safe to say that Doug Weight will have retired. The prospect or pick they can gain from trading Weight might be a valuble asset to the team at the point.
Perfect world, we trade him and he re-ups in the summer.

  61. avatar Islander505 says:

    Bye Bye Doug Weight.
Love ya, you’re a class guy, you earned your money here…..but re-read 19Isles comment number 56. (YES!! I KNEW he would violate Botta’s 100 word limit rules b4 the new year…I WIN the pool!!)

19Isles is SPOT on with those many words of wisdom.
GARTH…GET WHAT YOU CAN FOR WEIGHT (and Sillinger too).

  62. avatar Dan says:

I feel that Weights value to the youngsters currently on the team is priceless and in guys like Guerin, Weight and Witt they have alot of experience and can teach these youngsters alot more than a 2nd round draft pick can. Having talent is not enough you need to be around players that can help you to learn how to act on and off the ice and how to be a professional. Unless the offer is outstanding I say let them learn and grow together. I look for Isles to have a better second half than the first while still competing for that prized 1st pick.

  63. avatar isles316 says:

The Isles youth needs good coaching first and foremost to learn from, not veterans. The Isles have good veteran leadership in Hunter,Park and Streit. All respected players who have been around a while and probably part of the Isles plans.

  64. avatar Max'n the Hamptons says:

gotta love dougy. will love him even more if he can truly get a 1st rounder (somehow i doubt it by himself). I will miss the ole ole/doug weight doug weight chant though.

  65. avatar Marc says:

Just echoing comments like those of Isles Fan (53) & Johnny Islander (54)… This organization has plenty of 3rd round picks & lower level “prospects”. Unless Weight gets a 1st or high 2nd, it’s just not worth dumping him for such a meager return – for all the reasons noted in the earlier comments. I think some of you vastly underestimate the value of someone like Weight who likes so many things about this team and this organization, to say nothing about his value as a veteran leader.

And to those like Brian from Jersey (58)… You might want to re-read CB’s original post.

  66. avatar kevin says:

    rebuild = picks
    doug weight = picks
need i say more. you can leave and still praise the org and im sure he tought bailey everything he knew so…

  67. avatar Dmarie says:

Ok this may be a late addition to this blog post but nonetheless..
I think they should keep him, he’s a solid player, (imo) you need both vet and youth to have good balance in a team, you can’t be all about young fresh meat, not enough experience, to wet behind the ears which is where your vet players come in, I know he’s pushing 40, we hear it over an over but I still feel he has alot to bring to the table. Trade Comrie he’s asleep at the wheel Zzzzzz! sorry Mike!
but he’s young and someone may want him verses a player at weights age for trade value.

we have enough exp. besides comrie is playing well with comeau and okposo so how is he sleeping behind the wheel?????????? and if he can bring stuff to the table then he can get a 2nd rounder or more. trade him and bostons second that we have from the nokie trade that got us walter so the team gives up a first that would come from the 15th spot and up most likely and they get a pp specialist that is top 5 in the league in pp points and then you get a solid 2nd centerman who has exp. in the finals and then they get our very late second round pick

You need Veteran leaders. Theres a good chance Comrie won’t be back. Who knows what will happen to Witt at the deadline after his comments. Point is that Weight is a guy who’s been around the block more times than park, comrie, streit, and hunter put together. Olympian…Cup Winner…soon to be 1000 point scorer…CLASS ACT. Trading the vets for picks is great, but you have to have someone with real experience guide the sheep

We’re all die-hard Isles fans here. But the Islanders are arguably the WORST franchise in the NHL. By a number of metrics (attendence, profit, organization, etc.), they are they worst. Atlanta is better. Columbus is better. TB is better. Florida is better. If you have a veteran leader who wants to be a part of the Team and the future solution, you have to keep him. Especially since he is far and away the best forward on the Team. This is a no brainer. He committed his career and his family to be on Long Island. He should be extended for another year.

Recently, a number of high profile free agents (Gomez, Drury, Smyth) took less money to go elsewhere. This franchise will have a difficult time attracting free agents even with a new Lighthouse arena. Most players do not want to deal with the decrepit old facilities, a sad recent history, and the overall fan apathy. To have a quality veteran free agent who not only wants to be here but also try and be part of the solution is a gift that cannot be ignored.

I’ve changed my feelings….yep….you’re all correct. If the guy (and Guerin too) love it here soooo much, they will accept the rental scene and then come back to resign and “help” the youth movement even more.
