EXCLUSIVE: JON SIM ON WAIVERS
Could be the first move in a roster re-shaping

3:20 pm - Point Blank has learned that the Islanders have placed grinding forward Jon Sim on waivers.

The 31-year old Sim is now available to the rest of the league for the next 48 hours. In 28 games with the Islanders this season, he has 5 goals and 2 assists for 7 points.

An NHL source tells Point Blank the Islanders are not making this transaction to clear Sim to be sent to the minors. Instead, it could be viewed as the first (of potentially many) decisions to move some veterans to clear roster space over the next three months. If Sim is not picked up on waivers, he will likely stay with the Islanders.

Sim is in the second year of a three-year deal that pays him $1 million per season.

Update: Callahan back to the Bridge, Fritz still with the Islanders.

Wow. Interesting to see if anyone picks him up.

  2. 2 kevin

they coudlnt trade him for a late rounder like a fifth?? either way, interesting move. i liked him and was prob the only one. he was on average for the goals we werre told he was going to get

  3. 3 Isles316

I like Jon Sim, but he isn’t what this team needs. I feel bad for Sim, but I’d rather watch a player come up from the Bridge than Jon Sim struggle to produce. I feel for him but this is a very good decision.

  4. 4 michael

can’t say i feel bad for jon sim, and no one else should either. the guy has a MILLION dollar contract. do any of you get paid a million dollars to not show up to work? never feel bad for professional athletes.

that said, jon sim has been a TREMENDOUS disappointment and i couldn’t be happier that he might be gone soon. i’d rather have blake comeau stay with the team than him.

  5. 5 limberpete

I would rather see them sign/call-up Michael Haley…

  6. 6 CT Isles Fan

Hmmmm very interesting. I doubt anyone will pick him up on the way down. But what about re-entry waivers? You would get him for half of his current contract correct? What happens to the other half? Do the Islanders pay that to him?

  7. 7 Isles316

I feel bad for anyone that is doing something they love to do and is basically being told they aren’t good enough. I feel bad for him professionally, not personally.

  8. 8 DingoAteYoBaby

I see them putting him on waivers as salary dump. If someone picks him up, we split the tab with them, right? But I thought we were in need of $$ for the cap floor. Seriously…we couldn’t get ANYONE who wanted to trade for him? Not even for a 4th rounder?

  9. 9 Johnny Islander

This seems to just clear up the Jackman-Thompson-Hilbert-Park-Sim log jam. I figure you’re keepin Hilbert, Park, and Thompson are all “Gordon type players” Jackman is making every case that he deserves to be here full time. Gordon even rewarded Tim with a short stint on the PP last night.

Hilbert, Thompson and Jackman are all younger, and Park aint going anywhere… Sim is the odd man out.

Plus, this may make room for a Comrie return in the near future. I hope he gets picked up.

  10. 10 ISLESFAN999

Sim is a waste hopefully some team will take him.

  11. 11 Brian from Massapequa

I can give you two words why this move is being made. Blake Comeau. Remember folks Tambellini is coming back and Comeau has played too well to send back down.

  12. 12 kevin

how can we not trade him. we ovbiously didnt try cuz hollweg got a 5th. hes a cheapshot artist and a 4th liner wth little skill at fightng and scoring. sim can get 15+ goals and is a 3rd 4th liner. he can also draw and get under ppls skin

  13. 13 Mike from Philly

Move had to be made and with the team faltering it may be time to call up some of the young guys putting up good numbers in Bridgeport.

  14. 14 JLaMonica16

CB, do you agree with JohnnyIslander that this is to settle down the team log jam…or are we gonna see a surprising promotion from the Bridge?

    Trevor Smith anyone??

  15. 15 Blockness Monster

I love this move. Snow probably shopped him around with no takers. He is a penalty machine and I hope this clears a spot for Jackman/Comeau to stay up.

They need to send Pock back down and keep him there too.

  16. 16 Brian from Massapequa

I wonder if anybody has considered that Garrulous Garth may have already tried to trade Sim and had no takers. Just because we want a 4th, 5th or 6th round draft pick for a player does not mean we will get one. I think the Islanders have proven they are rebuilding through youth. Therefore I don’t think teams are knocking on our door to give us their draft picks especially when they can get a 4th liner for free on waivers (maybe).

  17. 17 larry

addition by subtraction. i think this is a great move and i hope some team picks him up. no knock against him, hes a good guy, he would fit someone elses system better then our go-go. i wish we could have gotten a low draft pick for him though. im sure snowy tried every which way to get it done, and this must be the best scenaro.

  18. 18 Bryan

How can you clear salary space when you’re scraping against the salary floor?

  19. 19 blitz

The guy is on waivers because nobody would provide compensation, ie. draft picks.

Some guy named Bryzgalov was offered around the league some time ago with no takers. He was eventually put on waivers and picked up by PHO with no compensation going the other way.

Sometimes taking on the salary by the claimnig team is “enough” compensation in their eyes. Here, I think NYI would agree.

Get the player, salary, and roster spot off the books. Compensation is NOT the priority in this case.

  20. 20 Tim

Apparently this was a guy who could score 20+ goals and draw penalties every night. But apparently the rest of the league caught on because every time he talked his talk and made that stupid face in front of the net, the other team just shoved him and laughed. Good riddance… hopefully.

  21. 21 blitz

Bryan re cap floor. Because the cap is calculated daily. With all the call-ups NYI are meeting the floor rather easily in place of the possible departure of Sim and his salary.

  22. 22 mm30

good move! rather see comeau/smith/joensuu/walter than Sim or an enforcer who can’t play at this level (fritz/haley)

  23. 23 Darren

I like Sim but he has looked lost out there at times. Good move Garth!

  24. 24 JPinVA

I hope this means Jackman stays and gets quality minutes for the rest of the year.
Jon Sim may have been more effective in the system he signed to play in. He might even have been more effective in this system had he not been returning from a serious leg injury.
He’ll get picked up somewhere. He most likely didn’t get traded because GM’s know that Snow has a serious roster space issue.
Who replaces him until Okposo returns?

    Good luck Jon.

  25. 25 Johnny Islander

    @JLaMonica16:

I’d love to see Smith get a sniff… But as Brian said, and I omitted, it clears Comeau’s space, and they still have to do something with Tamby in a week or so. Maybe there’s some more moves in store?

  26. 26 McLovin21

he’s not going anywhere. nobody will pick him up, and if they arent going to send him to bport, then he will remain on the roster. but getting rid of him is a nice thought.

  27. 27 Ed339S18

I don’t think Jon Sims will be missed, other than his grit, he hasn’t produced much to justify a spot on this roster. With the 08-09 season just about done for all possible reason, I rather see Jesse Joensuu or Thomas Marcinko than Sims, Cormrie, Tambellini et al. who have demostrated that they have no future on the Island.

  28. 28 illicit

    @mm30

Haley is a good scrapper and he can play. He also is not property of the NYI at this time.

  29. 29 Matt Scordato

Good riddance, I love the way Isles mgmt trotted this guy out at a press conference at some catering hall along w/ Fedotenko, Comrie and Guerin as their selections from the free agent frenzy of 07. What a joke!

Good move Garth, now dump Comrie too!!!

  30. 30 izzo

Just to clarify, Sim is on regular waivers. If a team picks him up, they take his entire tab off the Isles’ hands.

I don’t see it happening though. No one in this league wants to pat $1M for a fourth-liner. Except, maybe, the Islanders, who need to stay above the floor anyways.

  31. 31 guerin13

i’ve been disapointed with sim so far. maybe it has something to do with his surgery but i just doesn’t seem to be working out here for him. can’t blame garth for putting him on waivers.

  32. 32 Original Rob

Oh no! Now who will I compare all the other players with no offensive skills to on this team?

I didn’t like Sim from day one. And not because of his play on the ice. I just really don’t like his face. It annoys me.

  33. 33 mm30

I have to be honest I haven’t seen much of Haley, but if he could play in the NHL and fight he would not be a minor pro free agent…he also is only 5′11 198,thats not too big. 2 goals in 41 AHL games too…http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=71845

  34. 34 illicit

By play, I do not mean he is the next coming. He will never be confused with a 1st or 2nd liner, but he can play a solid scrappy, defensive game. He will never fill the score sheet. He is still pretty young.

  35. 35 Marc

Guy plays all of 29+ games with the Islanders since signing with them - 28 of them after return from a serious injury - and he’s characterized as a “TREMENDOUS disappointment” and a “waste”. Unbelievable.

Maybe didn’t fit this system, maybe not fully back from the injury. Either way, hope he gets picked up somewhere.

As for who this makes room for, unless more moves are coming in the next week, his name is Jeff Tambellini, whether you like it or not. Might as well get those other names out of your heads - until later in the year, maybe.

  36. 36 7th Woman

There goes my “Sim Shoots Wide” drinking game.

  37. 37 BringBackNyles

The way we play the third period I wonder if anyone fits this system

  38. 38 Paul

Remember Snow picked and signed this guy, he was out the 1st year and now being shown the door in his 2nd year. Another great move. Can we say rotating door!

  39. 39 Moose

i dont want to break any of the new blog rules but I hate the fact that you have a your name as bring back nyles…granted having a mascot as a dragon makes absolutely no sense but he was the mascot during the fisherman years, do you want those jerseys back too? I was at a game this year and these grown man were booing Sparky, hes there for the kids..Who cares? Stop being negative

  40. 40 James

Curious move. I’m not sure I fully understand it, or at least not sure I’ll understand it until he (a) gets claimed by another team, or (b) the team does something with him. Otherwise, he was just put on waivers and nothing happened.

  41. 41 Brian G

Sim is a decent player but not for the Islanders, when the a roster full of 3rd and 4th line players already. He may be useful for a team Like Vancouver, Dallas, Tampa, Florida, Anaheim, or Calgary.

  42. 42 18

Haley only saw 4th line minutes last year and spent most of his time in the echl. He’s also had a couple of injuries this year. He also won’t back down from anyone. I remember him fighting Fritz last year in a bst preseason game.

  43. 43 Original Rob

Moose, I’m pretty sure his username is meant to be ironic and/or funny. I think it’s pretty funny.

  44. 44 JLaMonica16

Any one think Joensuu (sp?) will see Colliseum ice this year?

  45. 45 Stumpy32

I think we all know that the team that plays the 82nd game this season will look nothing like the team playing the 29th. My guess is that the only over-30 guys still left on the roster that last game Apr. 12th at the Coliseum vs Boston will be Witt (maybe) and Streit. Park is an asset that could net a 3rd or 4th rounder. Do it. Comrie, if he plays even a lick and produces somewhat, will be gone for a high 2nd rounder to mid-3rd rounder. Do it. This will be a VERY young team come April. Stockpile those draft picks.

And you know what? Good. Very, very good. If signing guys like Weight, Guerin, Comrie, Sutton, and Sillinger lead to a ton of picks come next June, we’ll all be better for it. And if we can package a few of the overload of picks for a higher pick, even better.

  46. 46 Jon

Does anyone know why Blake Comeau has not played the entire season? He played pretty well last year, good enough to the point I thought he would be a 3rd line lock this year. I hope a team picks up Sim so Comeau gets the playing time he earned LAST year.

  47. 47 kevin

we better not trade park. and sutton is our best defensive defencman on the stat sheet and we need him for that and his size

  48. 48 Moose

i know, were all islanders…but just thinking about those mid to late 90s teams makes me chringe…with that said even though we suck now, we are no where near as bad as it was back than and us fans should CHEER for our team instead of being sooo negative

  49. 49 Isles316

Andy Sutton is the worst d man on the team kevin. Watch him play, he only plays big and physical after whistles and takes dumb penalties. He can’t move the puck worth anything either.

  50. 50 Daniel

Hmm this is a little surprising is it not? I liked Sim. I think he did a pretty good job on a pretty bad team filling his role. What I don’t get is why put him on waivers as opposed to letting him stick around until the trade deadline and maybe getting a pick?

  51. 51 Islander505

Here’s hopin someone picks up Sim and Godspeed to the guy.
Next to go ……..Comrie. (unless he dazzles me/us when he returns….I don’t see it).
Guerin, Weight and Sillinger will be gone at the trade deadline.

    Bring on the Tigers.

  52. 52 Tim

haha even the kids boo sparky. what kind of a name is sparky, anyway? sparky the dog?

  53. 53 blitz

NYI do not have a cap floor problem. Before or possibly after Sim gets claimed. It is a non-issue.

  54. 54 kevin

    1.ive seen him play
    2. most block shots
    3. he can move the puck pretty well for his size but thats not his job. he os supposed to be a presence n front of the net and he is.

  55. 55 James

Hey Chris, remember last year when the team was using injuries as an excuse for losing hockey and you provided this nugget:

“I’m not going to single out every injury, nor will we put a lot of emphasis on the shutdown of players when the Islanders fell out of playoff contention. But know this: when the season ends on Friday, the Islanders will have more than 400 man-games lost to injury.

Jon Sim, signed to agitate and score 20 goals, missed 80.”

Well considering the guy has never scored 20 in his career, that was another example of Isles management picking the wrong guys. Now that Sim is fully healthy, he can’t even make it through half a season.

What kind of a youth movement is it when a guy like Jack Hillen or other young defensemen are sent down so the likes of Freddy Meyer and Andy Sutton can take their roster spot? Someone explain to me how this season is all about rebuilding when you have three guys over 35 years old playing on the top three lines.

They fired a former coach of the year for not playing guys like Tamby major minutes. They get rid of Nolan, a proven winner, because a novice GM said he lost touch with the team.

They got rid of Neil Smith, who won a Stanley Cup, because he didn’t want to function in a committee system. But Snow now says he’s in charge and there is no committee. So you give full autonomy to Snow but not to a proven GM who has won the game’s top prize? Excellent move!

Let the excuses continue to roll.
Last year it was injuries, this year it’s “youth movement.” And Islanders fan just buy up the company line every time instead of holding the team accountable for putting together a team that can’t even compete against teams like the Thrashers.

  56. 56 blitz

Jon - maybe the Comueau you are seeing is the one that learned and benefited from a lesson of hard knocks.

maybe, just maybe, him starting off in BST actually benefited him to the point where how he is playing now is what NYI EXPECTED of him in the preseason.

He needed some medicine to cure his ills. Get over that he didn’t start with the team. He is not Crosby that would have made a huge impact on a non-playoff contender from Day 1.

  57. 57 limberpete

    Per the soundtigers website:

“Michael Haley . . . ACQUIRED: Signed by the New York Islanders on May 19, 2008…”

Are we sure this kid is not Islanders property? From what I understand, Haley is not an enforcer per se (though he does have a reputation as being tough/fearless/scrappy player). He’s more of an instigator/pest/hitter type player, albeit a pest who can/does back up his play with his fists and who stands up for his teamates (i.e., a rich man’s Jon Sim). From what I remember, Gordon thought very highly of him in camp. Would love to see him get a shot…

  58. 58 blitz

James - that’s funny. so you want a rebuild team with everyone under 35, yet expect THAT team to compete against the Thrashers. Haha!

Rebuilding teams are wise to play veterans win or lose. If those over 35′ers were on 6 year deals, then you have something. But, they are short-term deals. A move WISELY done by Snow.

  59. 59 JPinVA

Hey 7W, I never played that one. the Hilbert version is pretty cool though. One Shotglass full of Jack, everybody has a beer. Whenever Hilbert is in position to shoot:
    1. wide left or right… drink and refill and pass glass in that direction.
    2. Shot to the crest. Drink and keep.
    3. doesn’t get a shot off at all, everybody drinks their beer.
    4. Good save by goalie. Everybody finishes their beer.
    5. Scores… I make a person to person to Hitler… he’s gonna need a winter wardrobe.

  60. 60 Nick

Good luck to Sim. He looked like a genius pickup for the first 3 games of the season or so…

To take a stab at the question from above, Joensuu has been doing well in the Bridge. He has more goals than Trevor Smith and he is willing to throw down (check YouTube for some footage of him winning a fight with Cody Bass). He’s pretty young, but if we see a sell-off of the veterans at the deadline he could very well come up.

As for the litany of complaining, as per usual…I am firmly convinced that the Isles could win the Stanley Cup in 7 games and some of the people here would whine that it wasn’t a sweep. I agree with the poster above who said this is NOT the team from the 90’s, we actually have hope now, and the fan support is going DOWNWARD. That’s a bit odd to me.

  61. 61 Healy

    Isles316:

Have to disagree on Sutton. The guy plays hard. He doesn’t have the best hands or speed but he is faster then you would think, leads the team in blocked shots, makes big hits, and takes up a lot of space in front of the net. He was a little shakey when he got here but he is really starting to put it together and what’s more, he wants to do well here. The whole team has been suspect defensively lately.

  62. 62 NVMC

I agree that Sutton is the worst Dman out there. He constantly pushed off the puck. At 6′6″ and 245lbs you would think the guy would control the boards… I don’t how the Avery thing will pan out for Dallas but Sim would be a nice fit for them. They will save 3million and won’t have to worry about Sim’s off the wall comments.

  63. 63 Healy

    One more and I’m out…

    Nick,

Concerning fan attendance. I think the length of futility, state of the building/transportation, and the economy have been the biggest factors in the downturn. Its going to take the Islanders making some real noise (maybe even more then in 2001-2002) before the fans come back.

  64. 64 Joe

I hope hes gone, the guy stinks.

  65. 65 Nick

Healey I completely agree with you on that front - it’s just amazed me that with all the BS we’ve gone through following this team that a lot of people are saying this season is the last straw. The team is actually showing signs of having a foundation upon which to build and all we hear is Wang’s a crook, everyone sucks, etc.

We will definitely have something special here when the pieces fall into place. I wrote Howard Berger a note after his post on Hockeybuzz saying the Islanders didn’t have enough fans to sustain support, because I know it’s there and it has to be unlocked. However, there is something to be said for accepting this year for what it is, because some people seem shocked that this team isn’t very good when we all knew going in that it wouldn’t be very good.

  66. 66 Jason

Weight and Guerin will not go at the deadline. They have played GREAT together and one of the few bright spots on this team.
I think Snow will sign them as stop-gaps for another year.. and after that, Bailey, Okposo and hopefully Tavares will have developed enough to take over the team.

  67. 67 Mattie C

The problem with Sim, as I stated a few weeks back during out Q&A with CB, is that he does as good of or even less of a job that the young kids. He was a waste of a roster spot.

  68. 68 Isles316

Kevin, didn’t mean to sound like you have not watched him, but personally I think he plays like he is 5 foot 6 and not 6 foot 6.

  69. 69 Dallas MacDonald

Why put him on waivers? The cap floor is just below us. Trade him at the deadline. Something bigger must be up? I just
    don’t understand this move.

  70. 70 7th Woman

JPinVA: 5 is too many rules for a drinking game. ;o) LOL (sorry CB, couldn’t resist responding)

  71. 71 JKP in Halifax

The guy was signed to play Nolan’s system. Guess he’s not as good a fit in Gordon’s. Too bad. I’m from the same home town as him and wish him nothing but the best.

  72. 72 James

Jason: if Weight stays on a 70+ point-pace, you have to sell while his value is high, if someone is offering a premium for his return. Would a team bent on a Cup championship such as Montreal, for instance, offer up a first round pick, for him? If so, would you bite on that trade?

~ James (the same James as comment #40, NOT the James from comment #55)

  73. 73 JPinVA

    Nick,
At the risk of “embarrassing” myself some more. I don’t know how old you are. For those of us that lived through the birth of a dynasty, we feel that this organization has been at the bottom of the well too often. Every time we make a stride forward we take two back.
I, as I’m sure everybody, wants to see this organization succeed. But with every change we just see THE BOTTOM OF THE WELL AGAIN.
    (and here comes the ban)
I personally was willing to give this new “youth movement” a try as well. But jeez, if you have a coach that can’t adapt at some point to his talent… and a GM that keeps using “youth” as a moniker for hope… and he only has two guys with second-third line upside from the past three drafts because he traded the other one for 31 year old who ran away from the circus. I find a lot more BS in the story than most. I think our GM has more axes to grind than Paul Bunyon… and an ego the size of Babe (the blue ox..not the pig).
This team means a lot to us.. and I don’t like it getting peed on nightly.
I am starting to see some good things though. Comeau being UN-EXILED… Tambellini being pressured to prove himself.
Now if Mr. Rock could work something out with the Hard Place and get some version of the Lighthouse in motion I think we’d all be happier.

    Sorry Chris.

  74. 74 kevin

well lets agree to disagree.hopefully when we make moves at the deadline we get roster players but we should teade everyone we can.

  75. 75 Original Rob

I will go on record here as saying that Doug Weight will NOT bring back a first round pick in a trade (nor would Guerin, Comrie, etc.) Yes he’s having a great year, but he’s going on 38 and is not exactly this year’s Marian Hossa-type rental. That said, we should definitely trade these vets with expiring contracts for whatever we can get, be it 2nd or 3rd rounders.

Remember, just because us fans think it’s a great idea to trade Tambellini for Cam Barker, Brent Seabrook, and Patrick Kane, doesn’t mean that a real-life GM is actually that inept (unless he’s named Milbury).

  76. 76 kevin

who said were gong to trade tmabs for barker seabrook and kane?? f your talking about the rumor from a while ago, there was o kane involved. a package deal for a first is dif then weight straight up for a 1st

  77. 77 Johnny Islander

Weight @ 1PPG absolutely goes for a first rounder at the deadline to a contender that needs a playmaking center that can also run point on the Powerplay. It all depends on him keeping up his current production.

We got a 3rd rounder for Marc-Andre Bergeron for god sake.

  78. 78 kevin

if* yeah if weight keeps up producton then yes but i dont think he will unfortunatly. god i hope im wrong but as of right now we can get a first rounder.

  79. 79 timm

ok point blank readers (and/or CB if he’s reading) explain this one to me. Is this done because it’s a long line of things about to come? maybe moving comrie and sillinger, looking for some scoring? or just getting picks? and then you have open room in your roster to bring up kids like smith and jonseu and all them?

what about trying to get a stud over here by offering something like comrie and our first round draft pick? i mean, (and there’s only 2 players i think are worth it right now) why not? go with the proven star rather than the one who “looks like he could be a star”?

Well, not now, but if they want to unload their higher-salary players at the deadline (Comrie, Sutton, even Weight and Guerin), they might.

  81. 81 Jon

Snow is starting to own up to his mistakes. Tambellini, Comeau and now Sim. Hopefully there is more house cleaning to come.

  82. 82 Islander505

    Jason….
“I think Snow will sign them (Weight, Guerin) as stop-gaps for another year.. and after that, Bailey, Okposo and hopefully Tavares will have developed enough to take over the team.”

I can live with that scenario Jason, I just think that if Weight keeps on track toward a 60-70 point season (especially with the PP numbers) someone is gonna come knocking with a coupla 2nd and 3rd round draft picks around trade deadline and Snow will jump on ‘em.
Guerin, maybe not so much, but Sillinger? Mr. Faceoff? Snow’s phone will be ringing off the hook for Silly at trade deadline/playoff time.

Garth would be wise to get as much as he can for these guys. He can always replace the “old grizzled experience factor” for mentoring the kids during UFA season.

    Just my opinion.

  83. 83 Islander505

    JPinVa.

In all fairness to all involved……I really think you should give Gordon’s system AT LEAST a full season (and more) before killing it.
You reference “the dynasty years” in your comments, how long did it take Arbour to assemble a team that played his system?
    30 games?
    1 year?
    2 years?
    5 years?
    7 YEARS???

James - Yes. I agree.. but thats a big IF too. I think it also depends on the Isles position come that time, and the development through the season of Bailey and Okposo. Because I dont want to depend on Comrie being my #1 center.
Id be more willing to give up Silly then Weight. Different players… but playoff time Silly is valuable too. All depends……..

  85. 85 Jason

    505 - I agree.. again.. all depends..

What centers are available as UFA’s this coming year?

  86. 86 BringBackNyles

Moose my name is meant to be ironic…yes I am negative here…15 years since the last palyoff win wil do that.

But when I go see the isles atthe Rock (I libe in Rockland) or I make the drive out to Long Island I cheer the team.

Actually maybe I am negative because of one too many drives back to Rockland on a Saturday night after a loss ;)

  87. 87 kevin

i want snow to sign mike cammalari this offseason

  88. 88 Johnny Islander

Nothing says you can’t re-sign Weight in the offseason even if you trade him, and especially if you plan to keep Guerin for another year.

  89. 89 kevin

thats what i want the isles to do johnny. keith trachuk (sp) did it with the blues afta they traded him to the thrashers

  90. 90 Islanders1984

Islander 505 is right. Got to give gordon system a shot. snow and Gordon need to stick to this plan. Bring in youth and players that can play in this system. We don’t need another coaching change

  91. 91 ItsGoodToBeRich

I like Simmer, but he seems to be struggling a little bit. I’m not sure why Snow would put him on waivers as we could of easily moved him at the trading deadline for later round pick.

Who knows, maybe no one will claim him and he’ll be back with the team by our next game.

  92. 92 Macch

Great but what does this mean exactly? Pock passed through waivers and he is still on the team. Can anyone explain?

  93. 93 isles72

I heard they are hoping phx claims him then waives him /then does the re entry waivers and isles get him for half price on the way up

  94. 94 TuxTax

Sorry Simmer but the team needs to cut you loose to bring up some more fresh blood. We need someone young who scores goals(with some style preferably), we have enough agitators and penalty killers. We need someone that can deke his way past the defenseman and finish. We need a kid with speed and talent and composure. Anyway, Its still going to suck when the first 5 ping pong balls get drawn and the Isles get the 5th pick :(

  95. 95 MikeinRichmondVa

After that terrible play behind the net last night, showing his lack of speed it was the right thing to do (thanx Garth for listening to my comment last night (gee-gee-gee)). Sutton is too big and slow to be pinching on offense and then getting back quickly on defense. This team needs more speed to run Overspeed correctly.

  96. 96 Ryan

I know everyone is saying trade the vets but I have a feeling we won’t see Weight and Guerin traded. Remember although we want to get younger, you do need some veteran present in the room to help the kids along. I think everyone else is fair game but I really feel Weight and Guerin will be staying.

  97. 97 JPinVA

505, (I’m on the cusp of a lifer, but I’ll defend my thoughts here).
    1. Al Arbour was brought in to teach a DEFENSIVE style. The core of any good [hockey] team starts with DEFENSE.
How long did it take for his “system” to be grasped… Maybe 10 minutes… “Look boys we’re gonna be responsbile, or you can use the door behind you”
He was a MAN, with conviction and 20 years of NHL experience on his side. It didn’t take long at all for them to buy into it. I think he lowered their goal differential by about 100 his first year.
73- (-177) last year under Goyette
74- (-65) first Arbour year… Potvin led the team with 54 points
75- (+10) Potvin is STILL the leading scorer and they are one game away from going to the stanley cup.
Do I expect that type of ascension. But a decline year after year is SICKENING. And it’s BS to sell it as “you have to get worse to get better”
Nolan had these guys on the same path… but the talent kept declining.
Okay… we scrap that… and we have to live with it… can’t ask why, or how… just live with it because there’s a new emperor and he’s got some new duds.
I’m sorry for embarrassing myself, but when Brendan Witt is behind the opposing goal TWICE in one game… YOU JUST AREN’T putting the round peg in the round hole.
Of course, that’s my opinion…and as usual, I can be wrong wrong.
I’ve been posting my opinions since the Ask Alan days, and most of my comments have been pretty positive about an organizaton in shambles.
I won’t apologize for being somewhat negative about what’s going on here.
But I will apologize to Chris for not adhering to his posting rules.
And no… we definitely do not need MORE CHANGE… except maybe some tweaking and some HONESTY.
    Sorry.
PS…7w, I just read your blog for the first time. Nice stuff. Ad 5 is way too many, it was just a long path to an unappreciated punchline.

  98. 98 dmen77

    Here’s the master plan:

    - we just waived Sim and we’re about to sign Sundin

    - Sundin should be rusty so his his first 5-7 games he’s not much of a factor and we continue to lose

    - Sundin finds his game and helps us beat the Rangers with a 5 point night, we win 9-2

    - we trade Sundin to a contender of his choice near the trade deadline for a 1st round pick

    - we use that 1st round pick and one of our 2nd round picks and get a higher 1st rounder to go along with our own top 2 pick (I still don’t think we are going to be worse than Tampa)

Don’t mind me, just dreaming guys!

  99. 99 AZS

Sim is lazy - plain and simple …good riddance

  100. 100 admin

Wow, 100 Comments on the waiving of Jon Sim. Gotta love the PB Mob, as a reader called it yesterday.

Trying to work on another story for tonight. Haven’t confirmed details yet. We’ll see. It’s early…CB

  101. 101 JPinVA

at least you got to be 100 this time. :-)

  102. 102 admin

that’s it JP, you’re over the limit. You’re outta here! LOL…CB

  103. 103 Ryan

CB just a testament to what an amazing job you’re doing with this blog. Never before have fans had such insight to their favorites team like this.

  104. 104 Hurrapop

While I do wish Sim the best of luck, I hope its on another team. He hasn’t impressed me that much. If he stays, I hope its in Tamby’s spot… I’m just saying

P.S. CB… did you know this was coming? I mean you did say something this morning along the lines of that you’ll write more stories unless Isles do something or something lol

  105. 105 DanNOLA

I’m just looking forward to the “(insert team name) signs Jon Sim!” headline.

  106. 106 Chris TMC

I understand why this is happening. Jon Sim is a good 4th liner. I dont have any problem with him AS a 4th liner. I just dont think its fair to blame HIM that the Islanders have too many 4th line players- how is that possibly his fault?

I dont know if someone will pick him up, but for 500K I do think its possible.

  107. 107 dmen77

I agree, Sim is a good 4th liner and seemed to work hard most of the time, but he was a 3rd liner and when he didn’t work hard it seemed to end up in our net.

Best of luck to him although he may just end up right back here after not being claimed.

  108. 108 DINO

Does that mean that there is another move coming????? about the other story?

  109. 109 Akeem

Can’t blame Garth for this move. And to the posters who criticize him for signing him and a year later cutting him loose, two points:
    1. The signing of Sim was to play for Nolan, not Gordon.
    2. Garth has totally changed his approach since then. It was that offseason, after Garth realized he would never be able to lure big time free agents to LI when he struck out with Smyth etc. and had to settle for the Jon Sims of the world, that he totally changed his approach and decided to build from within with the draft. With the approach the Islanders are taking now, this is a wise move. Comrie is next, in my book.
CB, rumor has it DP has strapped on the goalie pads. Is that true?

  110. 110 Islanders1984

CB if you are still taking story Ideas, I would love to hear who you’re favorite Islander was or which islanders team was your favorite to deal with while working for them.

Thanks for taking ideas by the way, you truly made this site for the fans. No other fans in any sport has this must access to there favorite team. Much appreciated

  111. 111 Chris TMC

I predict that Comries going to look a lot better when he does come back- because he finally isnt going to be injured. And when he does come back looking better, I wouldnt be so quick to get rid of the guy. He is still in his 20s, he is a solid 2nd liner, he is well-liked by his teammates, Comrie has a lot more plusses than people are remembering.

  112. 112 Larry

I head a rumor, Isles trade Comrie and Tambellini for Dustin Penner

  113. 113 Ryan

Chris TMC I agree 100 percent with you. Plus Mike Comrie loves being on Long Island. Wouldn’t be so quick about shipping him out.

  114. 114 ISLESFAN999

Larry I would want penner and a good draft pick. Also I doubt edmonton wants comrie as he was there before and left on bad terms..

  115. 115 Strummer's Army

This move had to happen. While it goes down as a very bad free agent signing at least the mistake was corrected. I’d must rather see dudes from the Bridge to see if they sink or swim (while getting us closer to our friends Tavares or Hedman) then guys like Sim.

I am sure Sim is a very nice man and I wish him the best.

Larry I will jump for joy if we got Penner for Comrie and Tambs!!!!!!

  116. 116 Strummer's Army

PS: Larry if that turns out to be true you could run EK outta business!

  117. 117 ISLESFAN999

Penner is on pace for 43pts. Hes not really that good. I would like a # 2 pick from Edmonton also included in the deal if it were to really happen.

  118. 118 ISLESFAN999

    does penner fit overspeed lol

  119. 119 TruthBeTold

Come on guys. Sim scored 5 goals with minimal playing time. They’re losing game after game and it’s clearly not his fault what so ever. The Isles need more gritty players like him, and Mr. Gordon and company should realize they are totally off base on this one. Montreal would never play so many young studs without good solid vets to school and protect them.

  120. 120 Strummer's Army

Penner has a ton of potential so I migh tdo the deal just to be rid of Comrie and Tambs (a fresh start) but Comrie could put up 43 on his own. Penner gives size and toughness so the wild card is Tambelleni. Why should we get a pick as well? Penner signed a big fat offer sheet while Comrie and Tambs have cap friendly deals thus it is probably right to ask for a pick.

  121. 121 Strummer's Army

OK, Sim was guilty of many gaffs this season and Sim isn’t going to protect any one.

  122. 122 TruthBeTold

  123. 123 ISLESFAN999

I would like sim on the team if he was 4 inches bigger and 30 lbs heavier. He is just too small and ineffective because of his size!

  124. 124 Jason

I know he hasnt played but… c’mon. No DP?

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=397023

  125. 125 TruthBeTold

True, if he were 4 inches taller and 30lbs heavier it would be nice, but then he’d be Bill Guerin and making 5 millon dollars more per year. He’s a real good player for a cheap price. This move is premature and just plain wrong imo.

  126. 126 Nick

Larry, is that Penner deal L3 or L4?

JP - you’re obviously entitled to think whatever you want about the team, but I felt I needed to make the comment because you’re starting to sound like Randy Quaid’s character from Major League 2. I’m half expecting you to show up at the Coliseum with your jersey inside out and the words “SNOW JOB” written over the back of the logo in black Sharpie.

I’m in total agreement with you that I want this team to win the Cup, and to answer your question it would be the first Cup I’d get to see. This year is not nearly as bad as the worst we’ve seen with this team - at least we have stable ownership and a stable pipeline for developing young players. We might not see it at the NHL level yet for various reasons, but the play of our prospects in Utah and Bridgeport are cause for excitement. Things are looking up - Comeau came back with a fire I never saw from him last year, and I think this move with Sim means they want Comeau to stay. I’m also with 505 - let’s give Gordon a full season before judging him. He’s clearly not an idiot without the team’s support, unlike a certain coach with a certain famous hairstyle whose players begged ownership to fire him. I’m not 100% sold on him as a coach, but he deserves better than to constantly accuse him of losing the team because he didn’t want to risk a big suspension for Fritz and himself 18 games into the season. I hope Mottau will get his later; revenge is a dish best served cold.

Once they break ground on the renovated Coliseum and we get some more prospects into the fold after the 09 draft, there could really be something happening here. I think management finally gets that we don’t want to be sold a bill of goods every year so the team can sneak into the 8th spot and exit the playoffs 4-5 games later.

  127. 127 Nick

CB - sorry for the wordiness. I’ve been good lately so I hope you see this as the aberration it was.

  128. 128 TruthBeTold

We need TuxTax to simmer down. That’s what we need.

  129. 129 frank nyc

    THANK GOD!
A complete waste of a roster spot.
    Smart move releasing John Sim.
He was not really good at anything and most nights you would be hard pressed to even name a play he was in on.
Hopefully this means a permanent spot for Blake Comeau.
Young and talented. Fits the criteria that Sim does not.

  130. 130 TruthBeTold

    frank nyc = BRAINDEAD

  131. 131 Dana

Certainly, there are players with more skill on the team BUT If all of the Islanders had the same heart and grit as Jon, they would be serious contenders. Jon, all the best to you.
