NATE THOMPSON OUT 2-4 WEEKS
Fractured ankle sidelines center
7:35 pm - Nate Thompson is out 2-4 weeks with a fractured ankle.
The Islanders will not have any news on recall(s) from Bridgeport until Tuesday’s morning skate at the earliest.
Travis Hamonic and Jared Spurgeon did not make Team Canada for the World Junior Championships. The Islanders will likely be represented by David Ullstrom, (Team Sweden, confirmed), Jyri Niemi (Finland, likely), Kirill Petrov (Russia, if he has made enough improvement from injury) and Blake Kessel (USA).
The Islanders are a franchise in need of some good news. A win tomorrow at home against Washington before a pair of tough road games would be a start.
Comments.

For a fractured ankle? And for KO being speared?
What would you be mad at the training staff for?
“Drink some more milk so your ankle won’t fracture as easily!”
-
Its really amazing how we have so many injuries. Are all our players unlucky? I dont really mind losing thompson hes a 4th liner and I personally like Jackman more anyway. Lets bring up a kid.
-
so many injuries, its crazy
-
I don’t know about blaming the training staff. Seems to be a league wide problem.
-
Is Petrov playing in Russia now? Any updates on his performance thus far?
-
yikes
-
any chance Point Blank could talk to any of the World Junior Championships staffs to see what they think of our prospects? (the good, the kids who got in, the bad, the kids who didnt)
-
I’m not sure this kind of thing can be blamed on the medical or training staff, but after last year’s parade of D-man injuries, someone should look into something somewhere. Wasn’t it like 400+ “man-games” (or however they say it) lost to injury last year? We’ve got a 27 year-old goalie with 48 year-old knees and hips and a 15 year contract, and the young players we need to keep on the ice for the “future” are seeing less ice time than the Ice Girls. Meanwhile, Richard Park is scoring our only goal.
This is, um, not a good thing.

What is up with all these ankle injuries? Is Botta going all Tonya Harding on the guys so he can break the news here? HHMMMM
I am very surprised Harmonic didn’t make team Canada he seemed like a sure thing. At any rate, I am pretty sure Witt didn’t play in the tourney so in the long run Harmonic will still be a quality d-man.

Damn, for a second there I thought you were wrong CB. I was on NHL.Com this morning checking the Canada roster and Spurgeon and Hamonic were both on there, however, they now changed around the entire article. I guess there was a misprint in the article this morning. I guess that’s why I couldnt figure out all day why the Isles website didn’t post anything about them. That’s unfortunate, however, I think Hamonic will be on this team and a great player in the NHL sooner than anyone thinks. The kid has got some great potential!

Talk about snake bitten. Are there other NHL teams that play a Gordonesque overspeed type system?? If yes who are they and do they too suffer from as many injuries as the Islanders??? how where when did the thompson injury occurr?
Any chance we can get a player like Lucic?? -
Who cares about this season. Who cares about injuries this season. Lets all be realisitic all we need to do is stockpile prospects and picks and prepare for a good season in a year or 2 maybe 3… Lets tank this yr and draft Tavares or Hedman and lets trade some vets and get lots of prospects…
-
And the black cloud of fate continues to hang over the coliseum. What a shame.
-
Nolan’s and Gordon’s systems are different; at least from what I see on t.v., so I don’t know why all the injuries. You would think that there should be less injuries? Man-games lost might be down from last year though, because Nielsen’s injury can’t be counted towards the system unless Mottau’s elbow is a new part.

Islesfan999:
I can’t say I care much if guys like Sutton, Sillinger, Park, Comrie, or Guerin go down; we either know what they are already, or they simply won’t be here next year. But young guys who need ice time to show us whether or not they can play directly affect the value of those picks you want. If the young guys like Thompson deserve a spot in the future, that’s a great thing to know when it comes to draft day.
-
7th woman says it best – sure does seem like a black cloud is hanging over the franchise these days.
Is it possible to be any more snakebitten than they’ve been?
The Neilsen, Okposo and Bailey games missed to injury really hurt the most. Is it too much to hope that they’ll get at least 2-3 months playing together injury – free this season?
-
*assuming Bailey will miss a few here with this latest injury
-
It is incredible how often our young guys are getting hurt. Don’t think you can blame the training staff for a fracture. I know some may disagree but I don’t consider Thompson a part of our future he is just filler. This sucks with Bailey, Nielson, and Okposo though. All three looked good(well Okposo was playing better) and its just a shame. Hopefully Nielson can recover fully from his injuries he was becoming very fun to watch!!!! Why can’t it be anyone but our youth!!!!!
-
too bad someone like sim didnt get hurt
I wouldnt miss him LOL -
Maybe it is from the bad ice at NVMC.
-
I know the economy stinks and jobs are hard to come by, but the entire medical ataff needs to be replaced. It oozes incompetence.
No team in the NHL even comes close to the amount of injuries the Isles suffer. It’s downright embarrassing.
-
How can 2 years in a row our team get so decimated by injuries. Im not saying the training staff is at fault,, but its becoming more then a coincidence.
-
It has been going on for quite a while now. We have been up there in injuries for longer than 2 years. Ice? Could be… Players we draft are wussies? maybe… Training staff sucks? More than likely! Can’t blame them for fractures though guys!
-
Looks like Fritz stays
-
I guess if injuries KEEP happening to the players, it MUST be the training staff, but I’m not a doctor. Is it the doctors who treat the team? Is it the ice at NVMC?
-
Oh this is just SO comical. Who’s REALLY injured and who’s just ‘needing time to heal’ from a rough road trip? DP will play by December 23… that’s what I read this morning. Did Bailey and Thompson run into each other’s ankles or something? I don’t know if I really want to watch this circus anymore this year.
-
Karma………the hockey Gods that be want this team to have the 1 or 2 pick. It is very possible that this team picks three or even four 1st rounders, if they do the right things with the vets at the deadline.
-
I very much doubt that’s NVMC ice can be blamed for latest injuries, considering the fact that the team spent the last week on the road. Medical and conditioning staff, well that would be a fair question.
Awesome blog, CB. Thanks.
-
I wonder what kind of “right” things we would have to do with our vets to turn them into #1 picks? Probably turn them into good players before then!!!
-
the nhl network on cablevision will be covering the WJC.. not sure of the schedule but i saw it advertised..

Wanted to leave this link for any interested…

I guess the team will really miss his 1 goal this season? This guy is very expendable just like MOST of this team. Who Cares?

When do we start questioning the training staff?
