WE’LL KNOW ABOUT DP ON MONDAY
It’s either nothing, or more than a mild groin strain

by admin on December 28th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

A source close to Rick DiPietro told me the goaltender was simply “just a little sore” in the aftermath of the Islanders’ win on Friday. This is to be expected after such a long layoff, and playing a game after very little practice – including none 48 hours prior to return. As Howie Rose theorized on the broadcast last night, the “groin strain” announcement could be what’s called ”NHL housekeeping” because you have to list a specific injury for the league office if you want to call up Yann Danis to back up Joey Mac.

On the other hand, a few PB readers reported DiPietro grimacing during the third period. One email pointed out that DiPietro changed his positioning to only get up using his left leg. Whether DiPietro’s injury is significant, we’ll know tomorrow. My plan is to blog from the Islanders’ morning skate at the Garden and stay for the game. I hope everyone had a nice first week of the holiday season…CB

    We’ll see what happens.

  2. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Just sit him for the year. What is the point of him playing

  3. avatar kevin says:

let him rest. this is our franchise goalie and we need him healthy and ready for next year or the year after

  4. avatar Matt says:

I’m not saying play the guy now but sitting him out for the year(unless of course if he is injured) is not going to be good for furthering his development. If the guy is injured or pushing through an injury he should not play. On the other hand if he is OK he should, not for selling tickets but for him staying in the game for next year and the year after(and for the next 11). Who knows with this team he very well may have been rushed back! Thanks for the update CB.

  5. avatar beatlebailey says:

i guess DP is too good to have done a stint in bridgeport like sillinger did?

  6. avatar doc says:

I don’t think a stint in Bridgeport would have done DiPietro any good… What exactly would that do?

IF he was to play at Bridgeport and get hurt… then what?

    It’s the same situation.

  7. avatar 7thWoman says:

Ah yes, the DiPietro “wait and see” game. sigh…

  8. avatar DanNOLA says:

I don’t think you can just sit him for the whole year. No matter what you do as a profession, you have to keep your skills in shape. And having him take shots in practice and not play games wouldn’t be enough. This is, of course, if he is actually healthy enough to play.

  9. avatar Matt says:

Thats just the way this guy is. They can call it whatever they want. The guy is a 27 year old with 90 year old hips and knees. I have a hard time understanding why they would call it a strain if he was just sore. I don’t believe it for a second. Only way I buy into this garbage is if he plays tommorow and finishes the game. I’ll bet we don’t see him for another month. This to me is nothing more than the team I’ve been watching since 1976 being deceitful with the fan base AGAIN! I don’t know what they hope to accomplish more than upset fans? I hope they prove me wrong but I don’t buy it!

  10. avatar ken says:

there was no shot of him playing against buffalo, so why bring him there. they probably needed to list an injury in order to take up a backup for joey, just in case of injury. im not worried.

  11. Are we sure this isn’t from the unnecessary Campoli-DP jumping high five-chest bump?

I saw him uncomfortable after the exchange and walk off the ice….

  12. avatar Matt says:

I guess we will see. I am truly beginning not to care. The whole “injury” thing is a joke. I’m sick of it.

  13. avatar Jim (GFIC) says:

Man. I knew it- from six rows back it was obvious the guy did something to hurt himself right after he took the minor. From that point on all I did was watch DP, and the guy was in pain. Breakin the 10 game slide may have come with a hefty price tag. Hey, at least there’s the Jets, right? I need a drink.

  14. avatar 18 says:

What about a contract buy out?

  15. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

18 – A contract buyout on DP would hurt us big time for six years.

As for the rest, if DP is not healthy he should sit. I agree with Doc, there is no difference from a goaltender starting a game in the AHL or the NHL. Conditioning stints for “skaters” in the AHL usually involve less minutes than a player would play in an NHL game.

  16. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

505……….Why is it that you feel that the coach of the team has no right to cricize a player who in 10 games is a minus 8? This same player has been a minus player for seven of the 10 games he has played in, but the coach is wrong for pointing out that the player has had defensive shortcomings?

Why bother to have a coach at all? Let’s just pretend everythings wonderful and that the player has no faults. This player has one (count ‘em) one goal in 10 games. He damn well better be able to handle his defensive responsibilities if he can’t score worth a lick. His 4 points in 10 games is not exactly burning up the
NHL. And it’e the coach’s fault that he can’t backcheck or pick up his point?

Al Arbour would have sent this guy packing
long ago, just for his lack of defensive hustle. Don’t blame the coach for the players schortcomings.

Gordon’s interview was televised during last night’s game. I am quite sure I am not the only one who watched it. Maybe try youtube if you missed it…Sir William

You “know” what? Did you even read what Chris Botta said here?

  18. avatar Matt says:

    Sir William,
    Jackman -11
    Guerin -10
    Doug Weight -10
    Campoli -16
    Brendan Witt -15
Gordon has done nothing short of praising Jackman’s game since he has been up yet he is a -11. Comeau is entertaining to watch to most except you. The only reason you ever say anything is to stir the pot. Once again I will repeat myself, nobody is saying he is the next Gretzky. I’d be happy if he was on the second line or third. Kid passes real well and if he were on a team that could score he would have double the assists and his + – would be more appealing to you. Gordon is clearly a moron for more reasons than this and I am done with him. Using him as a example is like asking your blind friend how hot the girl is he is about to set you up with.

  19. avatar James says:

It’s almost 2009 and the Isles are about where everyone predicted they would be: 30th. I have no problem with that; as CB has said, this team needs a superstar, and perhaps one may be headed here come the end of June.

On another note, one year ago the landscape for Mr. Botta and probably many people reading this was a lot different than it is now.

But this website has evolved into one of the better Islander reads, if not one of the better NHL blogs on the web today. It’s been a lot of fun trading comments with everyone.

Hope everyone had (or is having) a great holiday, and I’m looking forward to better days for Isles fans in 2009 and beyond…

  20. avatar Jon says:

Rumors are circulating that teams are interested in trading for Weight. What would the Isles be able to get in return? A 3rd-round pick at best?

  21. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

MATT “Gordon is clearly a moron”

Yes, but he’s the coach and you are not.

Mr.BOTTA..didn’t you have some sort of gudelines? Or is this going to evolve into another of Logan’s disasters?…Sir William

  22. avatar Spinner9 says:

I’ve been amazed at the love-affair many of the the Isles fans have for Comeau. He does scrap in the offensive zone but really doesn’t have any sort of offensive game. I commend Gordon for getting on him about his defensive short-comings. If he’s gonna be around for a few years now is the time to get him to conform. I still predict that he is a future third or fourth liner at best. Don’t get me wrong, with the right mind-set he can become an effective player for the thrid or fourth line. There is nothing in his history that portends that he’ll be productive enough to play on the first two lines of a decent team.

  23. avatar Matt says:

Sir William, I don’t believe me having a different opinion than yours was one of the guide lines that CB posted. I’ve read your comments on newsday’s blog as well and I know why you are on this site now. You get blasted over there for your “predictions” and how you know more than everyone else. YOU are actually not FOLLOWING the guide lines by not sticking to the topic of the blog and discussing Comeau. But that is nothing new because that is all you ever comment on here and Newsday about. Now I’m going to stop posting on this blog and FOLLOW the guide lines because I already posted more than 4 times. You are one of the reasons that the Newsday blog is a “disaster” by the way. I mean come on man grow up, a bit defensive?

  24. avatar doc says:

The coach shouldn’t be calling players out in the press… that’s the bottom line… unless something egregious occurred.

If Gordon takes Comeau aside and man’s up with him behind closed doors… I’m all for it. But to single him out as if he’s been THE problem is indeed problematic.

I’m sure Gordon is aware that “most” fans are solidly in Comeau’s corner (except Sir William)… so why the beef with Comeau. It obviously goes deeper than his backchecking or perceived lack of backchecking.

Same goes for Witt calling out his coach.

    DOC

  25. avatar John says:

There is no way they will let him sit the year. After the next major injury the Isles should seriously consider a buyout or a dump trade because then he will be worth squat.

  26. avatar hatecrew says:

Really Sir William give it a rest. Go back to Newsday.

  27. avatar hatecrew says:

They probably will play him again injured.one thing this team has been consistentwith its bad decisions. i have a funny feeeling he will be out for another month. Oh well ill say what i say every year. There’s always next year!!!!

  28. avatar Marc says:

I believe one of CB’s guidelines was 100 word limit per post. If you’re so worried about the guidelines, maybe start with that one.

  29. avatar The Gordon Girls with Bea Arthur says:

100 words…..and disagreeing with others? Namely disagreeing with Coach Gorton? I guess Botta’s guidelines weren’t enough?

  30. avatar Chris TMC says:

    *shakes head* ANYWAY-
I looked on theahl.com and in transactions it says that both
Colliton and Yann Danis were returned to Bridgeport from N.Y. Islanders. So, that means Rick will be in the Raners game… presumably as starter, but we will have to wait and see on that. (Id think it probably also means Sillinger will play.) Hopefully this ALSO means that the Ricksteria can settle down- at least until someone else “knows” whats going on.

  31. avatar TinyTim says:

The whole objective of this season is to get that #1 or #2 pick , this is what horrible franchises do to get back on top , (ie. Lemeuix -Pitt ,Jagr-Pitt,Crosby-Pitt,Malkin-Pitt,Ovechkin-Wash,) in order for us to get back on the NHL Map we need Taveras , or Hedman- i prefer the sniper but wont complain if we get the next lidstrom

All islander fans stop worrying about all this other bullcrap with whos playing, whos hurt, who needs to be the goalie
IT DOES NOT MATTER !!!!!!! We need to lose and lose some more and then lose some more- Imagine if we pass Tampa and they get Taveras- WOW- VINNY,STAMKOS,TAVERAS Down the middle—while we would have Bailey & …..????????????? See where im going with this- All of us fans should be focused on 1 goal this year LOSE LOSE LOSE EVERY GAME POSSIBLE !!!

  32. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Prediction: Rick frustrates the Rangers tonight and gives us another thing to talk about regarding Rick’s pseudo injury … Rick’s post game comment? “I did it with one groin tied behind my back.” :)

  33. avatar Since72 says:

Salary dump trade? If he can’t play who would want his salary? Buy out? If he can get healthy he is one of the top goalies in the game. Milburyish to let that get away. If he can’t get healthy, let insurance pay him. Real questions are will he accept 40-50 game per year starter role? Joey filled in admirably as starter but can he perform at same level with less frequent playing time as back up?

  34. avatar RJ says:

Which of my favorite teams is the biggest joke? The Mets, the Jets or the Islanders? The Mets and Jets frustrate me more than the Islanders because the Isles are so inept, I never expect much from them. In a way I wish the Mets and jets could be more like the Islanders. Be so inept, that they never give me sleepless nights.

  35. avatar doc says:

I know it’s debatable… but if it ever did come down to the 1st choice… and it was Tavares vs. Hedman…. You have to take the DYNAMIC forward. You need that excitement in the building.

Orr, Potvin, Coffey are the only DEFENSEMEN that I’ve seen and would go out of my way to watch specifically for them.

But I could list HUNDREDS of fowwards…

  36. avatar Swan says:

Just too early to think about draft picks, especially thinking about getting Taveres, Hedman, etc.

    1) The season is not even half over. No guarantee the Isles are 29th or 30th when all is said and done. There are at least three worse than the Isles.

    2) No guarantee the Isles get the 1st pick even if they finish 30th.

    3) For long-time Isles fans who remember, no guarantee that even getting the 1st pick will even make a difference in making this a winning franchise.

My suggestion is to watch the Team, root for them to win and build for next season (which will be another difficult learning and losing year for the squad and Gordon). I would bet a mortgage payment right now that the Isles don’t get the #1 pick.

According to TheAhl.com….Danis Was Sent Down

  38. avatar the bomber says:

is fritz up?? i want him to tune up that tool Orr tonight.

  39. avatar Marc says:

Only 38 comments until the first Fritz man-love note of the day. OK, so it was in a blog post about DiPietro. Minor detail. That’s still pretty good around here. Meanwhile, I’ll just hope we keep seeing four lines of forwards who can at least skate.

  40. avatar Dmarie says:

I think regarding the DP situation that everyone needs to settle down, the guy was hurt, he healed, he was out a long time, so to ease his way back in is fine by me! playing 3 periods of hockey is no walk in the park, it’s hard! so for him to come back an play and then take a night off, is a good thing if we want to keep him healthy! have you ever worked out and then stopped for a long period of time and then when you go back every inch of your body hurts.. C’mon give some slack, and they will play him more an more as time goes by. Joey mac as done a very good job at back-up, our goaltending isn’t even an issue, other then the fact that you do tend to win more games with your number one guy in net, but nonetheless this year is a wash out as it is so just like the Beatles..”Let it Be”

  41. avatar toorude says:

can we fire gordon and hire mangini?

  42. avatar Justin M. says:

    Hey CB,

Just to bring up an old article you wrote about the prospects. Did you watch the Team USA vs Czech Republic game yesterday? Wow, can Jordan Schroeder play hockey. He is really making a case for himself to move up into the top four if you ask me!

  43. avatar Angry Petes Brother says:

We need Tavares plain and simple. # 1 overall and nothing less.

Hedman will no dount help the rebuilding effort but will not fill seats the way Tavares would or score goals the way Tavares would. This franchise needs an offensive superstar. With the possibility of a new building and the lighthouse project going forward as planned, the need for star power is even more important.

Snow needs to do what is right for this franchise. Dump anyone and everyone with a market value that doesnt fit the future rebuilding plans as we approach the trade deadline. Stockpile draft picks. Evaluate whoever is left in the system. Lastly, we need to LOSE as many games as possible to give the franchise the best possible chance at assuring Tavares is wearing an Islanders crest this summer.

I am not saying throw games, I am saying sell at the deadline. The season is lost.

Everyone hates to lose. The losing should be a means to an end. The losing should bring high level talent to right the ship in the long term. That is what is missing.

Tavares is not the savior by himself. He is just one more piece to building our way back to respectability. I know no draft pick is a guarantee, god knows we had our fair share of busts. But anyone who broke Gretzky’s or Lemieux’s records is someone I would like to take a chance on.

  44. avatar DanNOLA says:

    Oh, toorude, that’s harsh.

  45. avatar the bomber says:

i dont love fritz, i know he cant skate. i just want him to pummel a ranger and go to the box. thats it. seems better than having jeremy colliton play 8 minutes….
sorry, i am new and dont know the rules, ill try to stay on topic. Im sure DP is ok and will play tonight. But I hope he doesnt get too hot cause we need a lot of losses in the first half of 2009…

PS, although im new, it sure doesnt take long to realize who the tools are…

  46. avatar Pat says:

Fritz is part of the “entertainment” part of the game. I would be most entertained in watching him dismember some Rag tonight.

In fact, I think its essential.

    Pat

  47. avatar toorude says:

Tonight should be a good measuring stick – not exactly sure what we are measuring at this point, but even in the darkest days the isles always seem to put forth a solid effort against the lamegers. The boys do not have to worry about showing the fans that they are playing for the playoffs or their coach or a system, just plain NY pride. Character (good or bad) will be on display. I will be on the lookout for the ability to dig deep from our team. Keepers for the future can win our hearts with effort tonight. These are the “things” we need to pay attention to at this point to find joy in our fanship. Go Islanders.

  48. avatar Paul says:

I would love to just beat the Rangers tonight, that would ease the pain just a little bit.

  49. avatar alan says:

i think tonight will be a good gauge of what isles management really sees this season as.

If they take the precaution and sit DiPi we know they are looking towards next season.

If they play DiPi, they know he is proven against the rangers and want to win no matter what.

My guess is they sit him. Who knows, I’m hoping they don’t.

  50. avatar Since72 says:

In this league you have to play to win (although we know the best thing for the franchise is to not win too many). So lets beat the Rangers for the fans(pride). I say DiPi’s in. And Go Go’s got to win enough to keep the hounds from the door. I love his flat out style, fun to watch even when we lose.

  51. avatar isles316 says:

You’ve got to be kidding about DP right?

  52. avatar Spinner9 says:

Remember all of you who are advocating a complete dispersement of all the vetrans at or before the trading deadline the the Isles need to maintain a certain level of payroll to stay above the salary cap floor. Its not just a matter of dumping every vet for draft choices, we must then also take on equivilant salaries. So I’m not sure how we continue to stockpile draft choices and stay within the cap regulations. Maybe some of you understand this better than I do and can explain how we can get valuable draft choices without taking on salary.
