BOSTON AT ISLANDERS, 7:05 pm
Mannino…Dubie…PB on XM…more to come

by admin on January 15th, 2009 at 10:03 am

9:55 am - The Islanders’ backup goalie for tonight’s home match against the Bruins will be Peter Mannino.

The 24-year old netminder is 9-9-2 with a 3.09 GAA and .895 save percentage for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Mannino is becoming the Islanders’ backup-for-Boston specialist. The first time he got the call, it was to be the reserve in Boston. He played the final 13 minutes, received no support and allowed three goals.

Yann Danis gets the start tonight for the Islanders. Nathan Lawson, the Sound Tigers’ best goaltender over the last month, needs to be signed to an NHL deal if he is ever recalled. Lawson will be busy as Bridgeport plays three games in three nights over the weekend.

As we anticipated with our post last night, the Islanders will likely find the second-half solution to their goaltending problems within the family. In our view, this includes Wade Dubielewicz. After Mannino backs up for a game or two, you could see the fan favorite by the end of the homestand.

Point Blank will be on with Mike Ross on NHL Home Ice on XM Radio at 6:00 pm tonight previewing Islanders-Boston and discussing everything else in Islanders Country.

“Boomer” Ross is an old-school Islanders fan, so these 15-minute hits tend to be lively.

More to come from the morning skate…

First! Hahaha. Sorry CB, I just had to.

  2. avatar Macch says:

Well CB i cant see how this game is going to be close tonight. So how about Player grades? Not the most original but I still find it entertaining and fun to debate.

  3. avatar Paul says:

I know as a fan, I talk to other Isles fans’ about “classic games” we would like to see. I love as much as anyone to see those “Cup Clinchers” but there a bunch of games, besides those that I would like to see. I know that Cablevision is rumored to refuse to release some of those games, but we should see what we could do to get some of those games released on DVDs. Game five vs. Pittsburgh (82), Bossy’s 50-in-50 game, (the one that will never get released) Game 5 vs. NYR (84)…I am sure that folks can come up with a bigger list than mine.

  4. avatar Cain says:

I liked your article with Blake. How about the same with a different young guy each game?

  5. avatar Bryan says:

Paul, they’re coming out with a DVD set in March. For some reason, the official site hasn’t mentioned it at all, but the release date is March 3. It’s on Amazon and a bunch of other places.

  6. avatar goislesgo105 says:

Player updates on the progress of the young guys (OK, Comeau, Franz, etc.) is a great idea. After all, it’s all we have left to root for as Isles fans!

  7. avatar DP says:

    Mannino Interesting. . .
game coverage angles not sure what you mean but maybe some in the stands fan interviews, or more Tiger Beat like questions of players like in your Commeau off the ice feature??
Still looking forward to the game, I must be a masochist.

  8. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

Wow CB. . and when you started this blog you figured the majority of your coverage would be game by game analysis! Little did we all know. .

Tonight’s attendance could be scary with the weather and all. .

  9. avatar mtrico says:

Chris, as far as story ideas are concerned, I would like to know more about Danis and how this process of going back and forth to Bridgeport has impacted him. How does this guy possibly prepare for games at this point? He never knows where he will be. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

  10. avatar Johnny Islander says:

How about “DON’T SHOOT HIM…HE’S ONLY THE TRAINER – Part Deux” ? ;)

  11. avatar UIF says:

It’s one thing to want to “tank a season” and hope for the first pick. It’s another to expect a team to develop when there’s no confidence in the goaltenders. Danis and Mannino? This team will stop trying very soon if that combo lasts.

  12. avatar Matt Scordato says:

CB, Darren Dreger on TSN.ca just posted an article that the Islanders have agreed to play a preseason game in Kansas City. I don’t like the sound of that or what could be a precursor of things to come. Is this a ploy in the Lighthouse negotiations? Will Charles start to step up the “I’ll move/sell the team or else” rehetoric? What gives?

  13. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Story Idea… I saw that Ray Ferraro’s son is a projected as a possible late first rounder this year. How about a “where are they now” on Ray. Always was a favorite of mine. A true competitor. Or maybe a compliation of blurbs about all the former Isles who have kids playing or soon to be playing in the NHL. Nystrom, Sutter, Gilles, Parise, Tambellini (lol) etc…

  14. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

    #12 can i get a link??

  15. avatar KP says:

Matt (#12 & 15) – I wouldn’t look too deep into the Isles playing preseason in KC. They have a brand spaking new arena there, they had a preseason game there last year with the teams escaping me as well. The NHL is using it to guage fan interest if they were to ever expand or relocate there. By one team playing a preseason game there, that is not a fair indicator that they’re planning to relocate there.

  16. avatar Macch says:

Wow!! It could be a tough commute to KC to watch the Isles play. They would have to change their name though since KC is the furthest thing from an island. The KC Inlanders lol. God I hope this doesnt happen

  17. avatar UIF says:

I don’t know…the Isles never get chosen for that sort of “special event” thing though. Look at the Winter Classic…Isles did all the legwork and still got shut out. The conspiracy theorist in me says something’s up.

  18. avatar ron says:

    CB,
sorry if this was covered already but what about analyzing the kids/vets playing on the same line? Do you think there are some vets frustrated being paired with certain kids?

I only ask because i noticed some tension b/w Streit and Gervais from the last game vs. the rangers. i sat behind the isles goal and was able to see how players communicated with each other. Maybe it was just the intensity of the game?

  19. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

    Matt – nice find.

Not surprised. I guess it’s time for Wang to start playing hardball. Anything to get these L. Island politicians to take him seriously and get moving on this Lighthouse project!

  20. avatar Matt Scordato says:

CB…, i think you could make the TSN article a focus of the homestand, the season is lost, we’re gunning for the first pick and now that this preseason game has been planned I think the talk of the Isles moving off of L.I. will heat up. A marquee player such as Tavares could go a long way to saving this team, not going to fix all the problems, but winning does alot. Perhaps there could be discussions with those (not just politicians) who hold the keys to the Islanders’ future on L.I.

  21. avatar danny says:

Re:Drypatch. Devils sat night, i believe its first game against NJ since the cheap shot Mottau took on Franz.

  22. avatar larry says:

how about some Q&A’s with a few of the kids. or some storys from past teams? maybe a where are they now of our past team favorites.

  23. avatar blitz says:

how about Milbury admitting he would have traded Kessel last year when he was struggling (sound familiar?). Subsequently, this pretty much would have reduced BOS chances of signing Wheeler. Collectively, no BOS in 1st, story of the year, yada, yada, yada.

  24. avatar Moose says:

I like the non cup winning classic games idea…one of my favorite in recent memory was they clinched the playoffs vs the Capitals in 2002..it was the first time they made 7/8 year but i remember the atmosphere for that game being amazing

  25. avatar derek says:

    CB,
Here are a couple of things I was wondering:

What’s the attitude in the Locker Room? Are the youngsters taking the losing in stride, kind of like these games being practice games for the future?
Have any of the young kids, Bailey, KO, etc. stepped up and shown signs of leadership in the locker room?

I would think these fall into gameday type questions.

  26. avatar Chris TMC says:

Teams play exhibition games all over the place. The Kings and the Blues played exhibition games there, too.

  27. avatar Matt Scordato says:

KP…I agree w/ you, but this is out of the norm for NYI, CB correct me if I’m wrong but for the last ten years or so the Isles preseason schedule has consisted of games mostly from nearby opponents (NYR, NJ, BOS, PHI etc…) In fact, I’ve been follwing this team since 1975 and I can’t ever recall a preseason game against a western conf. team in a far flung location. I def think this is the first of many steps the NYI will take in starting to light a fire under the asses of local pols.

  28. avatar Ed J says:

    KC really!!?!?!?!?!?

    Jeez….

Anyways, I would like to know who else from Bridgeport the Isles are considering bringing up or what progrss is being made with our other draft picks are up to since the main site does not seem to care no more :(

  29. avatar Jack L says:

How about an story about the Sound tiger and Utah Grizzlies. What kind of depth do they have for the Isles when our players get hurt and what kind of talent will be coming to those clubs when the past few draft classes get there. Can we ever hope injuries will not be so devastating. How long until we have enough talent in our system to get through injuries without being a bottom five team.

  30. avatar Jack L says:

The KC game would not be a bad thing if the Isles get a ton of money from the game. I would support preseason games anywhere if it gets the team more revenue.

  31. avatar go orangesleeves says:

how about comparison of Figren to 55; Joensuu to Hunter, Niemi to Aucoin.

And especially a look into relative #,s of Blake Wheeler and KO.

  32. avatar Matt F. says:

How about when we play a team that’s a potential trading partner, you talk about who we could send them and what we could get back (like Guerin to BOS tonight)

  33. avatar Dallas MacDonald says:

Maybe a piece on Neilsens take on the hit that injured him. And if he thinks this will take a toll on his game going forward.

  34. avatar pbr says:

Here’s a story idea for you. Are you interested in a story on a lifelong islander fan — attended first ever home game, attended 3 of 4 cup victories, drove from Buffalo to Dc for the Easter epic — who grew up to have two dream jobs. !. worked for an nhl team hockey ops dept, and now…check my email addy.

and i talk regularly to many high profile isels fans — let me know.

  35. avatar effin5 says:

It took a day and a half to come up with that decision???

  36. avatar Marc from Troy says:

Maybe they took their time researching their options. Was there some kind of rush to decide? Was there a game last night that the rest of us missed?

  37. avatar Pat says:

Doesn’t Kenny Morrow make his home in Kansas City ? Maybe its to give him a “Home” game :)

I think its great if Charles is finally going to push back at Kate Murray and co.

    Pat
