HEY, YOU KNOW THAT STORY I POSTED ABOUT DUBIE 10 MINUTES AGO? SCRATCH THAT.

UPDATED 12:38 pm - The Columbus Blue Jackets have plucked Wade Dubielewicz off the waiver wire. Columbus, without Pascal Leclaire, was the other NHL team that really wanted the goalie.

While the Islanders did all the work signing Dubie, because of an absurd rule in the CBA, Columbus gets to pick off the contract. It’s happened before. Bob Clarke ranted about it years ago and it still hasn’t been changed.

Here’s the crazy part. If Columbus had signed Dubielewicz, he would have had to clear waivers. As the team with the worst record, the Islanders could have picked him up.

For his part, Wade - with a pregnant wife and two-year old son in Connecticut - had bittersweet feelings about the move but was okay with the CBA rule. “Once I signed with the Islanders, my heart was set on playing here,” he said. “But the rule is fair. It’s there to provide opportunities for players.” Dubielewicz is now getting ready to board a flight to Vancouver, where he will meet the Blue Jackets.

The Islanders will try to track down the Sound Tigers’ bus - en route to Binghamton - to get a goalie, or find one elsewhere. Mike Dunham just told me he’s not an option.

I really liked my Dubie story. Please read it anyway.

AM SKATE NOTES: Yann Danis was going to change his number to No. 75 and keep your No. 34 Dubie merchandise alive. Yann left the rink and may not even know the latest news about his backup tonight.

Sean Bergenheim only took part in the first 15 minutes of the skate and could miss another game with his strained side.

“NY Hockey This Week” will be live on Sunday on 1050 ESPN Radio, following the Rangers-Penguins game. Don La Greca and I should be on from about 3:30 - 4:30.

Brendan Shanahan, back where it all started, skated in his Devils gear at the Coliseum this morning and could make his season debut tonight.

With Atlanta’s victory last night, the Islanders are now 7 points up in the Tavheduch Watch. Maybe it’s just my PR background, but with all this Kansas City talk and subsequent passionate reaction in Islanders Country, wouldn’t be the worst thing if the home team got a win in front of a large crowd tonight.

B.D. Gallof, a big help filling in with a dozen posts when I was away on assignment or from my laptop, is sidelined for the season with an upper upper body injury. My wish for Brian is that he takes the proper time off and makes a comeback when he’s ready.

Point Blank is now in need of a doobie Dubie. Some experience and availability to cover games on Feb. 3 and Feb. 5 required. Please contact us at the site email if interested.

how does anyone have a higher waiver priority then us? we are the WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!

  2. 2 Islander505

LOL….poor Dubie…nobody wants him, everybody wants him.

And I was just about to post a comment that said, “I would laugh my arse off if Dubie led this team on a 10 game winning streak”.

Oh well…back to the Tavheduch watch.

  3. 3 MSA

I smell the curse of Mad Mike somewhere out there…

  4. 4 ken

why would columbus want Dubie, They have Leclaire and Mason?

  5. 5 Dadi

    Man,that’s funny! Is Danis back to #34 ? :)

  6. 6 kevin

LMAO thats funny. and thats a dumb rule. why did he have to through waivers.

  7. 7 Glenn

Great point by Ken - what’s up with the waiver rule that disallowed the worst team in the NHL from adding a goalie?
Mason, Leclaire, Dubie, some stable there in Columbus to go with those gorgeous jerseys.

The dreams of Tavares and Hedman are very much alive!

  8. 8 michael

    unreal.

  9. 9 MT

    wow. just…wow

  10. 10 ken

This rumor just in.. Dubie to the isles for Weight (E4)

  11. 11 Patrick

LOLOL holy ****, how crazy and insane can this stinkin place get. Does anything ever work for us, ever? And not to mention that we did alot preparing for the singing.

  12. 12 rob section 315

    figures just our luck

  13. 13 isles72

kinda sucks for doobie as he’ll be stuck behind mason wheras he would have been our co-#1 down the stretch

  14. 14 Isles Fan in Ulster County

    Oh boooo!

Peter Mannino tonight? Curtis Sanford tonight?

  15. 15 Bob

UNBELIEVABLE…We just cannot get a break at all. Once MacDonald is healthy and LeClaire is healthy Dubie will be back on the waiver wire. Just so everyone understands we get the first shot at anyone on waivers (Last Place) but our players still go through waivers to the rest of the league. Dubie will be back soon enough, just not now.

  16. 16 Shoogah

Is this a $&@?%# joke? The Islanders are trying to kill me. Please tell me we don’t play Columbus anymore.

  17. 17 guerin13

never a dull moment in islanderland. this is so bizarre but as i’ve said before i don’t think it matters who plays goal for the rest of the year at this point. hope the isles win tonight. should be a passionate crowd b/c of the kc stuff.

  18. 18 Angelica

Okay what the hell? First they want Weight, now this? oy vey…

  19. 19 ken

so if we asked the devils to sign dubie and then put him through waivers, we would have first crack at him? That does not make any sense at all.

  20. 20 KP

Ken, we may have waiver priority, but how can you claim your own player that you signed? Very simply put, you can’t.

This really is management ineptitude if you think about it. If he was supposedly in negotiations with other teams, and REALLY wanted to play here, which I believe he did, why wouldn’t you make a deal with the Isles under the table? It’s common knowledge that since he’s played in a pro league this year, he would have to pass through waivers. The Isles would have first crack of anyone on the waiver wire since they have the worst record in the league. Why wouldn’t he sign elsewhere with the intent always being when he’s put on waivers, the Islanders grab him?

  21. 21 Chris TMC

    This is UNreal.

  22. 22 Jerky

Absolutely pathetic on the part of Columbus to sink that low to pluck Dubie away from the worst team in the league given the goaltending situation we’re facing. They had other options … trade or promotion from the AHL.

  23. 23 islestherapy

if i knew any BJ fans, i’d strangle them. what a f’n joke. f’n joke. f’n joke.

  24. 24 islestherapy

doesnt the worst team get first crack at the waiver wire?! a million god damn goalies and they take our DUBIE!!!! Garth get on the god damn phone and get Dubie!

  25. 25 Jason

Because Columbus was probably ready for something like that so they had to sign off the bat and take their chances.
Whenever Leclaire is ready to go DUbie may be back on waivers and we make the snag

  26. 26 Chris TMC

Like the Winter Classic, the Isles come up with the idea, do all the work, and then other teams benefit from it.

  27. 27 admin

I don’t blame Columbus at all. They are playing within the rules, and they have important games left to play. They should do whatever they feel will make their team better…CB

  28. 28 Gas M.D.

Hey Garth, put on a sumo suit and get on the ice tonight. I’ve got 4 tickets for tonight and need some entertaining.

  29. 29 KP

    Hey Jerky -

Columbus is trying to push for a playoff spot. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

  30. 30 KP

CB - Can I safely make an assumption that the Isles gave Dubie a one way deal?

  31. 31 Jeff

I’ve gotta say, I laughed pretty hard at this one. I don’t blame Columbus at all, but, what do the Isles do now?

  32. 32 Big Dog

Son of a b*tch….and even worse, Mason is a 70+ game goalie for them so Dubie is in for maybe 5 starts the rest of the way for a non-playoff team. Come on here….

  33. 33 mrlbem

Is BD Gallof seriously hurt or ill? Can you update us?

As far as the Dubie move, and this entire season, I guess Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead said (sang) it best: “You know it’s gonna get stranger, so let’s get on with the show!”

  34. 34 Big Dog

    Ill, but not physically

  35. 35 19 ISLE in NJ 22

CB- I agree … we’ve plucked players off waivers. For once NHL rules favor Isles … go Tevheduc!!

  36. 36 Dan

I don’t blame Columbus for taking Dubie off of waivers but it does make me wonder if this is going to possibly affect trading with Columbus this year. Columbus has been rumored into looking for more scoring and involved in rumors for Weight, Comrie, etc.

  37. 37 Outside

Nash for Comrie sounds fair right about now for a team with 3 NHL goalies…

  38. 38 Gas M.D.

Duc? It will take a miracle at this point to go down to the third pick. We’ve lost like 18 of 20 and it doesn’t look like we’re gonna get any better.

  39. 39 islestherapy

Garth you dumb fool!!!!! FFFFF this team!!!! i was goin to the game tonight but FFFFF it now! FFFF this season! WORST in ISLES HISTORY!

  40. 40 Bedell

what is interesting to me is there has been rumors and such that us and columbus have been in trade negotiations. Would this create a bad feeling between the 2 GMs and end disscusions or could the Blue Jackets want to use Dubie as a trade chip with us?

  41. 41 SteveNYC

    KP (post 20)

    That is called tampering!

  42. 42 randy boyd

much as I never wanted to see him leave, this is the best way to ensure that we finish last. no disrespect to MacDonald or Danis, but Dubie knows how to win with crap all around him. just what we don’t need. having said that, the only things that will make me happier this season than a#1 pick which we actually use to select tavares and a 4 game 1st round out for the Rags will be a 9th (I believe) consecutive non-playoff year for Columbus. They should rot in hell for taking our Dubie when Snow finally realized what this team needs. Hopefully we sign him for next year so we can finally have a real goalie here.

  43. 43 islestherapy

dammit! this team needed Dubie for more than just the on-ice problems! i’m beyond pissed and depressed.

  44. 44 Daniel

wow talk about a turn of events huh. Finally, a little something to get slightly excited about with Dubie coming back. This is a pretty crappy rule, but it is what it is. It really is one thing after another for this team. Hopefully in the end we will be rewarded with the number 1 pick but with the Islanders luck it would not surprise me at all if we got number 2 even with the worst overall record.

  45. 45 islestherapy

trade weight to columbus for dubie and peca.

  46. 46 KP

    SteveNYC (post 41)

Only if you can prove it. Isles need a goalie. It would make no difference if they signed Dubie or claimed Sanford or made a minor trade for a netminder. The logic would be there if the Isles took him, handshake agreement or not.

Islestherapy - man, you live up to the second half of your name…

  47. 47 Chris A

When is this bad luck streak going to end? First, Mac goes down second KC then the Bruin loss in which the Isles outshot and outchanced them and now this come on.

  48. 48 MikeinRichmondVA

The worse we are as a team this year, the better we will be next year. Without Dubie we have less chance of a winning streak.(yea-yea-yea-yea-yea)

  49. 49 Mark

I think the Islander’s get it going tonight, Isles,5 Devs,2. The younger players are getting stronger and stronger, by each game played. I like what they are showing. I’m sorry Chris, I missed you on the Fan yesterday, didn’t know you were on. On the Lighthouse Project, everything and everyone that has anything to do with the NY Islander’s. “NEEDS THIS TO HAPPEN”. It is a Class Project from A to Z, the Team, the Fan’s, the Organization, needs, and deserves this. Chris plese tell me what I can do to help! You know what kind of a NY Islander’s fan I am, I will help and assist, in any way I can, to help the NY Islander’s. Thanks Chris, Mark from New Jersey.

  50. 50 hank

So, I blame this on Dubie’s agent. If they knew he would have to clear waivers and had other teams to sign with, he should have signed with them and the last place Islanders could have taken him off waivers! So a lot of people to blame on this, but like CB said BJ’s played by the rules.

  51. 51 Gas M.D.

Somewhere, Ted Nolan is smiling from ear to ear. He gets to collect a check and watch this debacle from afar.

  52. 52 admin

If there is a deal to be made with Columbus that can help the NYI, I highly doubt Garth Snow is not going to talk to Scott Howson because he “stole” his 4th goaltender…CB

  53. 53 AZS

CB stole my thunder there …I mean people, like Islestherapy, are freaking out because a backup goalie was picked up off waivers? You’re not going to go to a game because of it? Get a grip …this will actually help the isles get closer to the goal - finishing last …perspective people …perspective

  54. 54 islestherapy

am i the only one who’s mood was improved by the addition of Dubie after a week which brought the news of possible relocation?

  55. 55 Robbo

This is why I love this team! Never a dull moment. Seriously, I would rather be a fan of a last place team with tons of roster moves and uncertianty than a fan of a first place (or playoff calibur) team that coasts into complacency.

Poor Dubie. I really wanted to see him back in an Isles uni. One of my personal faves. Crappy situation, but thems the rules.

  56. 56 The Losers

    I got nothing really… but this is kinda funny… sad/angry-funny, but funny…

Our bad luck BETTER STOP before the Lottery…

Man I need me a doobie after all this… I’m just saying

  57. 57 Islander505

Good for Dubie that he has A JOB!!

Now, can we talk about tonight’s game?

A/I am donating the the 1st 100 Point Blank Bucks to the Mottau Bounty Pool.
The 1st Islander that effectively crushes Mottau (as judged by a majority on this blog) or wipes the floor with him in a throwdown, collects the pool.
    Like I said…I am posting the 1st 100 PointBlankBucks.

B/Brent Sutter’s honeymoon as a former Islander/visiting coach should now be OFFICIALLY OVER.
GIVE HIM HELL AT THE THE BARN TONIGHT.

C/Let’s tak a break from the Tavheduch shuttle and get two points tonight?

  58. 58 isles316

It probably has been written but since Dubie played in the KHL this year and had his contract bought out he CAN come and play in the NHL.

The Isles signed him to an NHL 1 way deal worth the league pro-rated minimum. However, Dubie then has to go through waivers no matter who had signed him to go to the team that had signed.

Therefore, Columbus picked him up within the (stupid) rules.

  59. 59 isles316

AZS, the Isles are going to finish last regardless. It’s not fair to the players who are playing their rear off lateley and the kids trying to develop and eventually learn how to win to have an AHL goalie staring and a bad AHL goalie backing up.

  60. 60 Cahoward28

Why is no one blaming Garth Snow on this one? If ANY of the other 29 teams (remember 3 were interested) had signed Dubie, we could’ve picked him off waivers with the #1 pick and just lived with the contract, which I doubt would’ve been worse than the one he signed with us. This is total mismanagement by Garth, it’s an absolute joke. The only way we don’t get Dubie is if WE sign him, if we let ANYONE ELSE sign him, he’s ours. Nice work Garth.

  61. 61 Tom Liodice

Just got it confirmed that Peter Mannino will be backing up tonight

  62. 62 AZS

Not going to argue that point 316, but look at post #39 and tell me that not losing perspective? How is it Snow’s fault? Another team claimed Dubie within the rules - what could he do? And to not attend a game that you otherwise planned on going to because he was claimed? Wow is all I can say to that…

  63. 63 Gas M.D.

Yeah, I figured Mannino would be the backup. I heard Dunham pulled a groin while stretching during practice this morning.

  64. 64 KP

I’m on the Tavheduch Express Bus, but at least these losses are entertaining and the kids are playing rather well. I know I post about tanking a lot, but when I’m watching the games, I’m rooting for them to win.

  65. 65 Strummer's Army

This is why the Isles should have claimed Sanford it would have been a done deal. Everyone knew this was a possibility with Dubie. I do think it is a bit of a strategy by Howson. Grab their goalie leave them hanging and force Snow to hurry up and do the trade I have been wanting to do to keep my team in playoff position. He’ll have to give up less too because wheter it is Dubie or another goalie he’ll now get to send one back.

What pisses me off is we could have had Sanford for free but I believe this DUbie crap dragged on long enough where Sanford cleared waivers and now the Isles would have to trade for him.

  66. 66 islestherapy

yeah … #39 was me. I’m better now.

  67. 67 Strummer's Army

THis was not good GM-ing. He got out manuvered and out thought and it will cost him now.

  68. 68 islanders1984

Strummer how is it going to cost him

  69. 69 Neil

Good! Anything, ANYTHING that could possible even a little bit cause is to get even one more point in the standings should be avoided at all costs. Peter Mannino and Yann Danis should start every game the rest of the year. Only Tavares or Hedman can save this franchise. Anything that could infringe on that is boderline criminal by the people who run this team.

  70. 70 mrlbem

Whether Garth is at fault or not, it’s just one more incident that allows the franchise to be portrayed in a negative, comical way.

  71. 71 Jax

I’ve never seen so much overreaction in my life. What if nobody signed dubie then what? Snow just wait on the side and hope? It’s a marginal backup at best. Stop f’ing crying about everything.

  72. 72 islanders1984

We really don’t need dubie stealing points for us at this point

  73. 73 beatlebailey

oh well good luck dubie…someone needs to make a run at the devil scrub who took out frans!!

  74. 74 Ed Flanagan

May be Islanders GM Garth Snow should sign himself to a contract and have the Red Wings claim him!

You talk about kicking someone when they’re down, well this one is right in the zipper! Do the BJ’s really want to share in with the REALLY BAD KARMA flowing out of the Island? BOO on the BJ’s!

But at least Dubie has played in more playoff games than the BJ’s have!

ps:…….The Isles can lose every game from now to April only to have Bettman tape the Maple Leafs’s envelope to the bottom of draft pool……and with the 1st pick, Toronto chooses John Tavares and I have a trade to announced….The New York Islanders have traded the 2nd pick to the…….and with that Islanders fans attending the draft party file out of the Nassau Coliseum……As a Islanders season ticket holder, first Fishsticks and now this! Where is there an oven for me to stick my head in! {:p)

  75. 75 Tony

I still cannot comprehend that there are Isles’ fans that seriously are hoping the team loses every single game from now until the end of the season in order to get the top draft pick.

Anyone who feels this way has far more serious problems than being a fan of a sub-par hockey team.

  76. 76 Brian G

what goalies are available? Danis & Mannino are not NHL caliber goslies…if this is what we have, Gordon should play Mannino 50% of the time, not just Danis.

HEY CHRIS - anyway the Islanders bring Ridderwall over from Sweden?

  77. 77 isles316

Strummer, if the Isles claimed Sanford everyone would be all over him because Sanford makes more money and everyone wanted Dubie and he is part of the Isles family.

    Give me a break.

If you want to blame Snow, blame him for not having another goalie 2 months ago when DP got hurt AGAIN and MacDonald played every night.

  78. 78 Cahoward28

Jax, it isn’t about who the player is, it is about Snow being out manuevered. When you are in a full rebuild and need all of your assets, you cannot afford to be outmaneuvered ever. Like an earlier poster said, maybe CBJ did this just to streamline a trade w/us and now we get less back than originally wanted because they will include Dubie in a deal. No one is crying, well at least not me, I just need an astute GM who will not get outmaneuvered running my rebuild. It is way too important.

  79. 79 DP

If Columbus really needed a goalie why didn’t they pluck Sanford- -Must be true that he is “damaged goods” still hurt. AT least we didn’t waste money on him.. . . Any OFFICIAL news on Ricky ?? ARe there any other goalies out there for a fair price?

  80. 80 upstatenyifan

I will volunteer to play goal. Anyone have some equipment i can borrow? I can guarantee I will not be claimed off of waivers or steal any wins for the team!

  81. 81 ISLESFAN999

Who really cares we are better off riding Danis now and losing every game. Who Cares!!!!

  82. 82 Priest

    Tony (post 75)

I agree. I want the team to wind up with Tavares as much as anyone, and if it means we have to finish in last, then I want us to finish in last. But I still want to team to go out and try to win every game. It seems like a lot of people would actually rather have the team lose, which seems so wrong to me.

  83. 83 Jason

Im in the mood for 2 points tonight.

Leclaire, when healthy again, means Dubie could be placed on waivers, and Isles get 1st dibs.

I wouldn’t expect a trade with CBJ soon if it involves Comrie or Weight. Weight’s injured, and Comrie just came back so they might want to see them get some games under their belt before cutting a deal.

  84. 84 Peter DeBenedetto

Fantastic!!!!! Keep the TAVHEDUCH watch going….we don’t need anyone stealing games….Thank You Coloumbus!!!!!

….although I will say….did the Islanders now that if Columbus signed him first he’d have to clear waivers???

  85. 85 Jason

Snow had to sign Dubie immediately because we’re desperate for goaltending. We dont know that Dubie would have been signed right away by another team…

IF Garth waited for someone to sign him, however long that took, with risk of injury to another goalie in our system while waiting, so we can maybe get him for free?? THAT would be stupid. Snow did what he had to and got burned. Out of his control.

  86. 86 Kristie

Well this stinks, I really feel for Dubie’s family.

I can’t blame C-Bus, this was in within the rules, poop happens.

Just another day in Islander Country.

  87. 87 doc

How could Garth get any blame for this…? please people… it’s part of the CBA and this is a routine procedure. They knew that this was a potential. CB even posted yesterday that Dubie had to still clear waivers. We as fans just didn’t think anyone would do it.

    DOC

  88. 88 Jax

How did Snow get outmaneuvered? Mac went down he tried to sign dubie and somebody claimed him. How is that being outmaneuvered? Nobody was mentioning Dubie until Mac went down and now all of a sudden it’s snow’s fault because of injuries. Plus this doesn’t effect the rebuild at all so that excuse doesn’t fly. Sorry just more crying by a lot of Islander fans.

  89. 89 Jax

Doc- They are pissed because Snow should be able to see in the future. I know it’s embarrassing sometimes reading these comments.

  90. 90 ISLESFAN999

    Tony -

The season is already over. The only hope we have is our young players develop and the #1 pick. Its more important for us to get tavares and have a real legitimate top end player who could be a 90pt player one day. Who cares about this season thats what rebuilding is about…

  91. 91 Hoser14

The 2009-2010 exhibition season has come early!

  92. 92 sar

Can’t blame Snow, its the rules. Unfortunately the rules don’t always work out in our favor. It all comes down to putting all our eggs in the DP basket and now its just the reprecussions of that occurring. Just continue to chalk it up to a rebuilding year, the true fans will stick with them even though we like to complain every now and then. From dynasty to disaster and maybe one day…dynasty again.

  93. 93 Tony

    Tony from post 75.

This team has 12 wins at the All Star Break. Our All Star Goalie is out for the season, and our Backup is now out for a month with a groin strain.

IF you know you’re going to lose anyway, what can it hurt to pray for a franchise changing player like Tavares, Hedman or Duchene?

And anyone who doesn’t think this draft pick is that important….look at how Crosby changed the losing in Pittsburgh, and Ovechkin changed it in Washington…

  94. 94 Jax

Very Important. Since we have a 7 point lead, let’s hope the kids get a win tonight and Jackman f’s up Mottau tonight.

  95. 95 Strummer's Army

It will cost Snow 1984 because he could have had Stanford for free. Who cares if he makes more money the situation would have been resolved and he doesn’t make much more then they were gonna pay Dubie.

316, Not everyone wanted Dubie. Check back several days I called this scenario and said I would prefer Stanford because it would be done and they wouldn’t have to worry about Dubie signign elsewhere or anything else.

What this does show is Snow lost the strategy session and that is alarming. The only good trades Snow has made is the ones for draft picks.

It will cost him now because Scott Howson just pulled down his pants and spanked his bare bottom. Snow already told everyone he wasn’t gonna ride out MacDonald’s injury or even the rest of the year with Dannis and Mannino, he doesn’t want either as the back up. Now it is going to cost him because he is going to have to give up assets to get when previously he could have claimed a goalie for nothing. Not everyone here had to have Dubie back. Nice guy, won some games but most of us aren’t so stuck in the past and just wanted a quality goalie.

  96. 96 Jax

Will you stop it please!!!! Snow is not going to give up assets to get a backup. This is the shat I’m talking about.

  97. 97 NYIFAN07

This would only happen to this team.

You sign the guy and lose him just before the game — now you have to call the bus en route upstate to Binghampton and tell them to “pull over and leave your goalie Mannino on the side of the road, we’re on the way to pick him up, we’ll be there in 3 hours.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

  98. 98 Kyle

Just heard Danis pulled a muscle at practice so Mike Dunham with start with Garth Snow backing him up…..Gosh the crap we Islander fans go through….

  99. 99 19 ISLE in NJ 22

    Get off the ledge!!!

First off .. Snow didn’t get outmanuevered … trust me … I’m normally a sharp critic … Snow HAD to do something … nobody tried to sign Dubie since December … how long is he going to wait? February?

C-Bus played by the rules … so what? We did it numerous times … that is how it goes. Freddy IV is an example.

Now … assuming we did get Dubie … and Dubie steals enough wins to land us a 4th or 5th overall pick … which is totally feasable ….we suck … but others suck almost as bad … I think the kids are only going to be more effective as the season wraps up … Is that what we want? Another 5th pick? 3rd pick? NO … I want Tavares … even Hedman would be nice …. it’s time we stop building with questionable 1st rounders that need years of development … we need CAN”T MISS!! .. Tavares as CB put it so well on the FAN yesterday is at worst an all-star .. at best a generational player.

Screw Dubie … he could of took the two way deal … and he’d of been up since the start of the season … he took another path … buh bye Dubie … it was nice while it lasted.

If we’re gonna trade Comrie or Weight to Columbus it better not be for Dubie. That seems silly to me.

  101. 101 Cahoward28

Jax, you are saying that it doesn’t effect a rebuild and all I’m saying is that if we have been in meaningful talks with CBJ for an A prospect and they only want to part with a B prospect, now they can package that B prospect with Dubie and we’d be more likely to bite. IF that happens, not saying it will, then we’ve gotten a B level prospect instead of an A level prospect for the same player and THAT effects a rebuild greatly. I’m not saying its the worst move ever, nor do I want him stealing games for us anyway, I’m just saying he doesn’t look great here.

  102. 102 ken

shoogah - i think it was a joke… laughter and humor will help all get through this season. Couldnt hurt for a rangers early playoff exit as well.

  103. 103 d

only in the minds of lowly isles fans can a goalie that no none wanted a week ago be a make or break player for a last place club

  104. 104 Mike

put up the shooter tutor and call it a season

  105. 105 jon from nj

I dont think anyone thought Dubie was make/break. Its just symbolic of the organization and its current situation. Nothing works.

  106. 106 Dan

It’s hard to believe that Snow is getting blamed for this by some fans. It was stated everywhere that Dub still had to clear waivers. Even on the Isles official site, it stated that it was pending waivers but he ‘agreed’ to return to the Isles. It was also stated last week that 3 teams were interested in him so Dub getting claimed is no surprise.

There are players placed on waivers all the time, a goalie could be on waivers right now. I know John Graham was also in Russia but, last I heard, he was bought out(similar to Dubie) and is now a free agent. Just because we lost Dub doesn’t mean we are going to trade for another goalie and if we do, it’s not like we’re going to give up more for a rental backup goalie.

  107. 107 Joe G

just over pay and get Rick Nash if he becomes a free agent. That would teach Colombus, especially when they have 2 goalies on the roster….lol

  108. 108 Strummer's Army

3 teams were trying to sign Dubie. You might remember when Snow was asked about it he said “I guess we are one of the three.”

I’m fine with riding out the year with some combo of MacDonald, Danis, and Mannino. I want that first pick but Snow once again messed up. He has good drafts but his failure to secure the right kind of defense, properly manage/hire the medical, conditioning, and training staffs, and failure to have enforcers who can play in addition to his failure here in securing the back up goalie HE says we need is troubling. Not to mention except for picks his trades have been disastorous. Rob Davisson, Zhednik etc.

Not to mention Jon Sim is playing ahead of Collotton, Walte, Smith, and Fritz.

  109. 109 Stefan

Hey, i come from Germany and i am a big Islanders Fan. Last year i visit new york and i saw 5 Islanders Games (4 losses, 1 win, but a nice one at MSG)! I don`t understand why it is possible that CBJ claims Dubie? Please explain me that rule?

  110. 110 Jax

Cahoward. We were never getting a A prospect for any of our Vets. I understand where you are coming from and you are one of the intelligent ones on here, but I just think snow is getting unfairly blamed here. Mac got hurt there is nothing you can do.

  111. 111 Jon

I am in shock. speachless. i hope gordon or snow are ready to play in net.

  112. 112 19 ISLE in NJ 22

What exactly was Dubie going to do for us this season? It was a contract for the balance of the season … he’s still a UFA at the end of the season unless C-B’s decide to extend … which isn’t going to happen. Why are there people just as upset about this as they would seem to have been that there was a possibility that the Isles were going to shuffle off to KC … permanently.

We are best off at status quo and then trade some vets for future assets and then if we need them back next season re-sign em … this season is over.

I am now wondering which teams are still in range for the Isles to catch … can the Isles make ground on a team 10 points ahead of them right now …. it’s time to figure out magic numbers for the #1 / or at worst #2 pick … is TO still in the running? 13 points ahead of the Isles … they’d have to win the lottery … Oh … and I honestly don’t think the NHL is going to fudge the lottery … and independent auditing group monitors it … it’s part of a requirement in order for the NHL to receive exception status from anti-trust …. You can confirm this for people CB so they stop with these conspiracy theories that only further make us look paranoid? This was brought up after the Crosby pick was awarded to the Pens … and an audit group confirmed it as I recall.

Dubie … good luck in Columbus.

  113. 113 Kristie

    Stefan,

When a player has played in a professional league (other than the NHL) and is signed by an NHL team he must first clear waivers. Which means all other teams have the chance to claim the player. I believe the 30th team gets first dibs.

  114. 114 BringBackNyles

My feeling is CBJ did nothing wrong, they are aplaying within the rules. maybe they even realized if they signed Dubbie themselves, the NYI would pluck him.

Not Snow’s fault either, we needed a goalie. Dubie seemed like a good guy, i wish him well.

These sports all have crazy waiver rules, look at the mess Portland is in with the telfair situation in the NBA. NFL players can’t take pay cuts even if they wanted too in order to continue their career because of a pay scale cap rule!

This stinks for us, but heck, wh dosen’t enjoy the cap rules that are preventing the poor poor Rangers from making even one move? :)

  115. 115 BringBackNyles

P.S. I meant Darius Miles not telfair in the above psot….

  116. 116 Zim

Shooter tutor? In an NHL game, I bet the Isles would actually win. I am strictly talking about those Mylec ones from the mid 90’s because they did cover quite a bit of net. But there probably is some crazy CBA rule about that and next thing you know, Nashville gets first dibs after the Isles get it from Modell’s.

  117. 117 ken

you can’t blame CBJ. you can’t really get upset over the whole thing, its more funny then anything at this point. Our season does not start until the deadline approaches and lottery balls are picked

  118. 118 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Actually Zim … since the shooter tutor hadn’t played in a professional league this season it would be excempt from the waiver rules … but .. from reliable sources … Mike Francesa … the shooter tutor is asking for a $4.5M / 12 year deal … I’m afraid the warantee for the shooter tutor is only good for 12 months … so it’s a pretty risky signing.

Right. So, if Dubie was signed by 29 other teams, he could be an Islander right now. The only reason he is NOT an Islander now is BECAUSE we wanted him and signed him.

  121. 121 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Ken … that is how I took it … I really had a good laugh at that … especially CB’s quick correction opening this thread … b/c I had just finished reading the previous thread he started … if it wasn’t so damn funny it would be sad.

A friend of mine who is a die hard Rag fan that I played midnight open hockey with last night said that us Islander fans have been so snake bitten the last 15+ years that we get paranoia syndrome and really make a big deal over things that every NHL team goes through from time to time … we make so much noise about some minor things that it always seems like woe is me … I have to agree with him … and he agreed that a lot of the criticism we lay on the Isles is deserved … but a lot is over blown …. this is one of those cases … funny thing is … I said to him … what can happen next to blow up in the Isles face … and well … it didn’t take more than 12 hours to get my answer …. but I find this situation hilarious.

  122. 122 ken

I believe Kate Murray was involved.

  123. 123 Cahoward28

Jax, very fair. I agree that we aren’t getting an A prospect, just was making a suggestion. I’m outta here, go Isles tonight, beat down Mottau! Go Tavares!

  124. 124 admin
  125. 125 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Speaking of Tavares … did he play last night … I heard there was a chance he was cleared to play… didn’t hear anything since.

  126. 126 isles316

#120. That is why this rule is ridiculous. I mean, if Sundin can have a “Mats Sweepstakes” and not be subject to the same thing then this rule needs to go.

It’s to give opportunities to players? If anything it gave Dubie the chance to make the minimum because if two teams want him then in theory they could both wait it out until someone bites or just not take him at all.

This I guarentee will be known as the “Dubie” rule and will be changed.

The league really has some contradictions in everything it does. Here is another example.

  127. 127 Stefan

Kristie, thank you for your answer. I hope so much, that the Isles stay on Long Island. Kansas City, absurd…

  128. 128 kevin

so does anyone think that mike mottuea will get his worth tonight? i hope so. maybe frans gets his first fight card tonight. not saying he wins but its a self-resoect thing.

  129. 129 Priest

I too suspect the rule will be revisited this offseason. Ultimately it isn’t a huge deal, but it is really stupid. Does anyone know more details about this rule.. has it always existed, or is it new recently? And did the NHL or the PA push for it? Because I can’t see how either would really want it. The only justification I can see is to avoid having teams make backroom deals with teams in other leagues, but in that case shouldn’t the various transfer agreements with those leagues deal with it? (I know there isn’t one for the KHL right now, but in general I mean)

PS Chris, this just got approved on Fark, so you may see a jump in traffic on this article.

  130. 130 Alex Kinkead

We should have signed Dubie for more money or for another year to avoid this situation.

  131. 131 Joe

I hope they play pissed tonight, Motteau better get jumped.

  132. 132 kevin

alex, we offered him money but we had to offer him 2 way. he left us. besides, it looks like gerber will go on re-entry. he has a hefty contract (3.7) so we can take that and it makes it easier to get rid of vets with out getting much in return. what do you guys think?

  134. 134 Strummer's Army

Mottau better get his tonight but I don’t think he will because Gordon doesn’t seem like the type to do the right thing. I like him as a coach but not in terms of the important aspect of the game in toughness and justice. Get ready for another statement after the game from him that makes zero sense. I can actually see Sutter sicking his guys on the Isles again because he doens’t let stuff go and won’t until the Isles let him know it is gonna cost him big time to mess with the Isles.

  135. 135 DanNOLA

What a week. Haha, I can’t think of another team in all of sports that has had this kind of week recently.

We’re 7 points ahead in the sweeps, right? Definately enough space to win on tonight! Let’s Go Islanders! I would really love to rub one into the faces of my Devils fan friends. You think anyone will take a run at Mottau? Unfortunately, I don’t.

  136. 136 mrlbem

More I think about this, and talk to my buddy in 303, the more I realize how (pick 1) stupid or cheap this makes us look. If Garth knows the waiver rules (and I hope he does), and he knows that 2 other teams were interested in Dubie’s services, then he either has to (1) let Dubie sign with another team and then claim him off wiavers, or (2) pay Dubie enough that it makes another team think twice about claiming him. I would have opted for #2 and paid him oh, say, $1 million annual. What I presume happened is that Garth figured Dubie wanted to be close to home and gave him a lowball offer, which Dubie accepted. Unfortunately, that same lowball figure made it more likely for a team like Columbus to claim him. The move doesn’t mean much in the overall scheme of things this year, but I’d like my team’s GM to be ahead of the intelligence curve rather than bringing up the rear.

  137. 137 Bob Bassen

Goaltending is such a fickle position. Anyone see how Edmonton and Pittsburgh just swapped back-ups? Funny what happened but even if Dubie helps Colombus win the Stanley Cup does it really matter to the Isles? I mean if we were in the play-off hunt et cetera, yeah, today’s waiver stuff would suck but….no worries. One thing about goaltending, ANYBODY can come out of nowhere and suddenly be THE guy. Except for a very, very few starters over the years, starting goalies positions/statures are extremely inconsistent.
    Go Isles!

  138. 138 The Losers

Unfortunaly, I don’t think we’ll see any “revenge” for Frans tonight… I’m just hoping for a win.

    How’s KO’s cheek anyone know?

And this Dubie situation is nothing more than a laugh, people are making too big of a deal out of this…

My point is, and I said it about a week ago, some people want the 1st overall pick, and a good playoff run THIS season. As much as I want that too, its not happening, so relax… I’m just saying

  139. 139 Aim

You all know how negative I have been lately but in all honesty There is nothing that could have been done woth the Dubie situation. Cant blame anyone. Even I Can’t!!!! oh well pickup and move on it’s not like we needed a goalie for a playoff run ar anything

  140. 140 b-ri

this sums up the season pretty much…though this all could have been avoided by claiming curtis sanford, but whatever…last place here we most certainly come

is there somewhere that we can listen to this or archived versions of it ?

  142. 142 Randi*NYI*39

I’ve got the netminder solution for tonights game… my 8 year old is all suited up in his NYI goalie gear and he is ready to guard the pipes tonight! He has experience, skill, great eyes on the ice and iasn’t on waivers so he’s a free agent! Plus, the NYI group is paying him in free burritos from the NYI game sponsor the Chipotle Grill! It’s win-win!

  143. 143 islestherapy

seems pretty obvious that CBJ’s GM is tryin to force Snow’s hand into a trade. They’ve wanted Weight, and they figure this is a way to get him. But screw it … if Snow goes for that, he’s dumber than I thought.

  144. 144 FAN SINCE I WAS BORN

typical this is the luck of the isle!

  145. 145 Drive45

A blessing in disguise. Losing every game is a win. It’s not about this year. It’s about the number one pick, Tavares, and developing the young players.

  146. 146 MJS

Kevin #132 - That’s actually an idea and I hope the team picks him up if he gets waived. Picking up all that salary would allow Weight to be moved without too much worry about the cap floor. He’s also a good pickup for the people that hope to see the team descending rapidly as Gerber won’t be stealing too many games.

  147. 147 Malurous

To everyone who wonders about the rule requiring professional league players to pass through waivers when signing with an NHL team mid-season:

I’ll clarify this here since I didn’t see anyone else doing it and because of so many people calling it a “stupid rule”. Now I do think that a correction to the rule that would exempt the 30th place team of it would be a good idea, and some here only have a problem with that. Still, others question the rule itself, but it is there for a reason - especially in the cap era, although it’s an older rule, having been around since the late 80s or early 90s.

Before the rule, teams were able to sign good players only for the playoffs or late in the season, which was ridiculously common at one point. At least the dynasty Oilers made a habit of this, Tikkanen in -85 maybe the most high profile (even though not egregious) example. Players would play a full season in Europe and join an NHL team in time for the playoffs. This made it possible to either hoard good players or acquire depth cheaply. Of course this was made easier and more palatable to Euro teams because their seasons were shorter back then and therefore over by NHL playoffs. Also, there was no limit how late you could sign someone.

Then, coming back to present time, imagine how a team close to the cap could abuse this, especially with the current lack of transfer agreements. Just send a couple of midlevel players to the KHL, for instance, replace them with minimum salary guys for most of the season and sign them game-ready at the trade (and UFA signing) deadline when over three quarters of their salaries will have gone around the cap. Even with a transfer agreement, I’m sure players could get an “until the NHL deadline” contract with crappy European teams, considering that European regular seasons are either over or only have a few games left at that point.

  148. 148 lox

It is for real a shame that reality has killed that dubie-story. it was the funniest and best I’ve read for a long time.

Anyway, I hope this guy will make his way to the allstar game 2010.

  149. 149 Matt King Isles 13

thank god dubie got claimed. he would have won some games for us.

  150. 150 kevin

as long as those games were against devs and rags i would have been fine

  151. 151 Trevor

I don’t want to sound like a troll, as this is the first time I’ve ever been here (This blog is in the Sports tab on Fark) and I’m not an Isles fan (instead I’m a fan of another rather pathetic team, Toronto) but this whole Tavheduch express I’ve seen mentioned should be taken with a grain of salt; should it not?

By this I mean that the Islanders franchise seems always end up trading away any players that look like they’ll develop into elite players (Rick DiPietro excepted, then again it’s debatable whether he’s elite). Granted the Leafs are probably the worst team in the NHL when it comes to drafting and developing young players.

If anybody is offended or seething with anger, I apologize.

  152. 152 isles316

trevor the Isles have never been in position to draft a player like Tavares in a long time. I dont even think we can screw that up.

  153. 153 OtherKevin

If I were in your shoes, I’d be p/o’d too. But there are a few points to clarify. Yes, Columbus was playing by the rules. By those same rules, I don’t think that Mats Sundin had to deal with this rule because he didn’t play in another league while he was off.

Two, Columbus only had one NHL goalie prior to claiming Dubie. Leclaire hasn’t played since November and it recently came out that he has an ankle injury. He is now on IR and will likely have season-ending surgery to repair the injury, so CBJ needed some sort of backup to Mason.

On the bright side, unless Leclaire suffers serious complications Dubie will be available at the end of the season. Assuming that NYI find a solution to their goalie dilemma, they probably won’t want him then.

Next, it is very unlikely that this was part of some sort of scheme to extract something extra in a trade with NYI. Why? Because Columbus needs a goalie. Also, all those Doug Weight rumors have pretty much died off, and the team has said that they’re no longer interested in him. Comrie might be interesting, but we’d still need another goalie and we’d also have to trade a prospect to get him. That seems unlikely since our current prospects are doing so well and we need them for a playoff push.

Howson’s strategy has been (and supposedly will be) to continue to pick up players where possible without touching prospects. He’s basically looking to trade picks and AHL players. Unless the NYI are willing to take a pick or two for Comrie (and I don’t see it), it’s not going to happen.

Finally, to whoever said that NYI should sign Nash when he makes it to FA, keep dreaming. Nash will not make it to FA. He and Howson have both stated their intentions to sign a long term contract as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the first day that they’re allowed to sign the new contract (per the CBA) is July 1 2009, so there has been a lot of rumor and speculation about Nash in the meantime. But Nash and Howson said that they BOTH expect a deal to be done on July 1. In the strange case that Nash WOULDN’T want to sign with Columbus, he’s still under contract until the end of the 2010 season and does not have a no-trade clause. Because he’s worth so much Howson would trade him long before he made it to FA.
