HILLEN RECALLED, CAMPOLI SIDELINED

by admin on January 18th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

This may come as a shock, but Chris Campoli has been sidelined with a groin strain. Per the NYI, Jack Hillen has been recalled – it’s an emergency! – from Bridgeport. Sans backup, I posted this from my phone from the train. So sorry if it looks awful. This is a test.

Test passed, CB. Thanks for the update, though I’m sorry it couldn’t have been better news for your first on-the-fly post.

  2. avatar EdTurner says:

Is it really possible for one team to have so many groin strains?

  3. avatar EdTurner says:

What, CB, did you say “per NYI”?

Are you out of their dog house?

  4. avatar Jason says:

What is the man games lost to injury for the Isles compared to other teams??

We may be last in the league but we have to be 1st in that stat.

  5. avatar Nick Classic says:

Good luck to Jack, and I hope the training staff regroups after all that’s happened this year and attempts to improve things. I’m not saying they’re to blame, but maybe something can be done.

In other defense news, Matt Gilroy scored a goal for BU last night as they beat BC 5-2. I’ve taken to envisioning him in the blue and orange as he patrols the BU blueline.

  6. avatar kevin says:

good news. hope he does well. i can see a goal in the future from him. i have high hopes as does the org for his offensive skills

  7. avatar Dan says:

Chris, this is the 2nd season in a row where the Isles have been completely devastated by injuries. Do you think there is something in their training/workouts that needs to be adjusted? I’m not sure if it’s the Isles conditioning coaches or conditioning of the players but it’s really amazing to see this many injuries in back to back years. I understand that groin strains happen, and injuries like Neilsen’s have nothing to do with conditioning, but this should really become a bigger topic each day with the way the injuries are occurring..

  8. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I actually laughed when I read this….another groin strain is impossible at this point. Oh, well Islander fans don’t look for too many legacy babies to be born by Islander players this year! As hard as it’s been on the fans think about how the groin strains are effecting the wifes and girlfriends.

Seriously, very happy to see Hillen up, it might be hard for them to send him down.

  9. avatar kevin says:

o and the test passed. anyone mad that no one stepped up to mattuea? i am questioning this teams unity. and in recent games, when the goalie gets slashed or run they do nothing. i know its off-topic but it gets me riled up. in my freshmen team we stick up for one another then this team.

  10. avatar d says:

kevin… the teams unity? half the team is out with injuries or recovering or hoping not to pull his groin, the other half are auditioning for next season or for a trade. there’s no time for unity. every man for himself at this point.

  11. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

I just have to laugh … this is beyond logical … I concur with my fellow fans … how could this be so common … one team the same season … I watch other games and the players look like they play hard … but they just don’t end up with the injuries that the Isles do … I know … can’t do nothing about an elbow to the head or puck to the ankle. I’m talking about conditioning injuries here.

  12. avatar doc says:

Groin strains and hip injuries occur with TOO MUCH STRETCHING and weakening of the musculoskeletal insertions followed by high impact demand on that insertion causing tearing of that complex. It’s simple. They’re stretching too much, thinking that they are improving flexibility and the end result is tearing.

Here’s a thought. In the early 90s when I played in a highly competitive league a friend of mine was an athletic trainer for a college baseball team … he told me when I stretch, don’t stretch too much to my limits. No need to be Jean Claude Van Damme … The reason? You don’t want to be sooooo loose that when your stressed to the limit you actually pull something. Stretch to be limber and reserve some torque in the muscles … Not sure if it’s related but I’ve never had a muscle injury. Any MD opinion on this?

  14. avatar Paul says:

I am hoping that Martinek is healthy (yeah, right) and the GM is smart enough to trade Martinek for something at the deadline. I would not hold my breath on the healthy part, though.

  15. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

WOW Doc … read my mind!!

  16. avatar 7th Woman says:

Welcome Back Jack! Post is just fine, but our team seems to have a problem. Have a good show today.

  17. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Hitting my quota on this thread already … but … I recall when Hillen was up he had a good hard low wrist shot that created scoring opportunities up front … The Isles are going to have to get more traffic in front of the net to take advantage of Hillen’s wrister.

  18. avatar beatlebailey says:

i strained my groin leaving the coliseum after the game last night..must be something in the water :-)

  19. avatar isles316 says:

I have heard from Bridgeport frequent visitors that Mcdonald should be up next on defense and that Hillen has been awful. We shall see.

  20. avatar Mike from Queens says:

    Doc:

Are you an actual, you know, doc? Of medicine, that is?

  21. avatar drivefor5 says:

Campoli stinks….he has been awfull, if your at games I’m the one screamin at him…. But now that he is out who do I tell to get off the the ice or yell about how he is worthless

  22. avatar bob says:

The Rangers are flat out better conditioned than the Isles. 10 man games lost all season.

  23. avatar Strummer's Army says:

oh, ya the lack of payback/justice tells you a lot about this teams heart and character. It tells me a lot about Gordon. I do like Gordon the teacher and the coach but I really dislike Gordon the sissy. Arbour would have had Mottaus head on the end of a hockey stick.

  24. avatar Johnny Islander says:

ANOTHER groin strain… CB you already know the rest of my post, so I’ll leave it at that.

  25. avatar Shoogah says:

    @drivefor5
    Comrie.

  26. avatar Shoogah says:

Why run Mottau? To risk taking a penalty? To risk injury? I really don’t want to see Jackman lose another fight.

  27. avatar Valentino says:

Rumor has it that Charles Wang has developed a upper body injury watching the isles from his luxury box

  28. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

CB has probably created a form letter to expedite the posting of his threads quicker … Starts off something like this …

It has come to my attention that according to the Islanders that (Insert Player Name Here) A) Been placed on IR for (Insert time frame) or B) is Day to Day … with A) Undisclosed injury B) Lower or Upper body injury ….

  29. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

    that’s it….

    The Kansas City Groin Strains

just see it now…big G and interlocking S on the front of the jersey!!! Colors could be black and blue.

Food give aways…Cracked babyback rib night!! For every 3 goals the groin strains score you get a weeks worth of Royal’s tickets…and chili.

  30. avatar Neil says:

CB, in reference to your point about the little leaguers in Ranger jerseys, picture this Newsday front page headline over a picture of a crying little seven-year-old boy “Have They No Shame?” Subhead:”Heartless Isles tell little boy he can’t go on ice in Rangers jersey!”
Team coverage and more lampooning of Islander franchise inside…
Sometimes its nice to have a heart and a soul and not be run by Lou Lamoriello. Not always, sometimes.

  31. avatar Joe says:

Strummer, Im with you on that. A blatant cheapshot by Motteau, where was the retaliation? Ridiculous. I mean, I like how he got back at Buffalo with Fritz TKO’ing Peters but this shouldve been addressed.

  32. avatar doc says:

    Mike from Queens:

Do you dispute my opinion? I am simply taking my experience of treating sports related musculoskeletal injuries for 15 years, my knowledge of the human frame and my experience in playing sports and I am arriving at a logical conclusion.

10 to 15 years ago… torn groins, torn hamstrings, sports hernias, torn hip labrums etc… didn’t exist except in extreme traumatic injuries for the most part.

It became dogmatic that stretching prevented injuries. So now every athlete is on a stretching and weightlifting program.

Stretching and weightlifting on the mornings of night games, weightlifting after games… more stretching… and then they don’t allow for a proper recovery period.

It takes 48 to 72 hours for repair after heavy weight lifting or even just end range of motion stretching in which there is fibrous breakdown.

I’m not saying that strength training, warm-up and flexibility exercises are bad or not beneficial… just not to the extremes in which todays professional athlete is being incorrectly directed.

Look across all professional leagues and teams. The injuries are devastating, career changing and epidemic with some teams.

There is something wrong with allowing these knuckleheaded athletic trainers, stretch gurus and personal trainers with a weekend seminar certificate, directing multi-million dollar athletes.

Could overdrive be causing all these groin issues?

  34. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

DOC .. I’m with ya … my friend was an athletic trainer with a college baseball team … he basically set up my workout and conditioning regimen … he discouraged excess stretching and weight training. He basically warned me about what you said … I did everything in moderation and knock on wood … never had any tears, hernias, strains or pulls. Just limbered up and worked on my range of motion … did weights to maintain some strength and not lose mass … worked great for me.

I thinkyou can think about that for yourself: Were the Isles fine last season and then are suddenly injured this season?

  36. this could be a blessing in disguise. if hillen proves himself nhl ready then when campoli comes back hopefully we can dump pock. Am i the only one who thinks he is absolutely terrible??

  37. avatar Jason says:

How do we know the Isles are being OVER-trained? Stretching improves flexibility. It will increase the end range of motion, not limit it. The muscle will be neurologically reeducated/re-set to the new length, not make it more susceptable to injury. Of course any overwork to the body without ample recovery increases risk for injury. I would hope the trainers would understand that. Their weightlifting programs should not be full throttle during the season, but simply to maintain what they already have. Bulking up I think would happen in the off-season, where they have ample time to recover. During the season should be more for conditioning and cardio. It wouldnt make sense to overwork your body during the season to risk injury. If anything, I think it would be more likely they may be UNDER stretched and UNDER warmed up so their bodies are not ready to meet the demands of the sport. Also, bulking up may produce strength, but may also create unbalancing between the muscle groups and alter the body’s relation and response to forces placed upon it. Where it will show up as altered joint mechanics, potentially leading to muscle strains. Bulking up without stretching or massage will increase the chance of “gluing” of the fascia, another risk to injury.

But who knows whats going on in the Isles org anymore.

No I can’t stand Pock either!

Guys, For those who havent gone there yet check out the lighthouse website. They have automated letters that are sent to Suozzi, Murray, etc.

    Lets keep the pressure on.

Good luck to Jack. He and MacDonald have been the two best defensemen there the last two months.

I hope he has a good showing, but it is very hard to look good on a crummy team. Hope things are different for him.

    Doc:

Not disputing anything. As a matter of fact, it sounded so reasonable that I thought you may indeed be an MD. The thought of which led me to ask whether or not you actually were.

It also leads to another question:

If they’re stretching too much, who coordinates this? The med staff or the coaching staff?

  42. avatar Gas M.D. says:

Hey doc, no need to get so defensive. Mike from Queens was simply asking, are you a real doctor or not. It required a simple yes or no answer. “Do you dispute my opinion?” LOL, that’s funny stuff.

  43. avatar volmeeezy says:

A little off topic …. Just got a new dog … trying to think of a cool name that could some how incorporate hockey and the islanders… Any suggestions anyone?

  44. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

What kind of dog… I would name it Cliff Ronning, but if it’s a bull mastiff, I don’t think that would work…

  45. avatar Gas M.D. says:

volmeezy, how about Laughingstock? It’s succinct and highly appropriate. Kinda rolls off the tongue.

  46. avatar mikeyMits says:

Maybe it’s the system exposing the players to injury. The go go go straight to the DR. thing thats has happend all season. its been months and they are playing the system and not scoring and giving up tons of oportunities the goals against don’t even reflect. Could it be this minor leauge system is designed for 17 year old players that bounce back and are much more flexable and less injury prone.

  47. avatar islanders1984 says:

Question about a new areana. Since its the countys approval needed to build a new coliseum or update the current one. Can they go around wang and update the Coliseum on there own or do they need wang to be a part of it

  48. avatar kevin says:

d on from 10. are you serious!?!?!? if you want to be on the team next year you may want to show you care about your teamates and same goes for auditioning for a trade. you must be joking. haha. your funny. and if you are replacing someone injured you are going to want to show that you are worth something. you were probably being sarcastic though so i will stop. everyone for themselves. thats classic. and shoogah, jackman has been faring well all year. and it doesnt matter if you win or lose. its about showing him you will stand up to cheap shots. and in that gamewe were getting shit on so the penalty would not have mattered unless it was at the end. so you do it early. and risk injury? jackman and thompson and everyone else could get injured in any fight so at that point you might as well ban fighting

  49. avatar beatlebailey says:

#43 how about Yashin or Kvasha for your dog’s name? :-)

  50. avatar Dmarie says:

Wow! another injury? CB? that was funny the way you wrote..”this may come as a shock..”.. lol!
I’m sure some of you were kidding ( I hope) with the every man for himself comments.. these guys aren’t like that, they look out for one another, rememeber there’s no ” I ” in team.. ok so it sounds corny, but it’s true! :)
CB..as always, thanks for the updates with a twist of humor..

  51. avatar volmeeezy says:

haha definatly yashin or kavasha .. my moms a ranger fan shes pushing to name it “duguay” … im leaning toward WANG or Lighthouse ! Man are we in trouble , both my dog and this Islander team

  52. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Instead of this team going through Growing Pains, it is more like Groin Pains. Enough is enough already.
