MacDONALD OUT 2-4 WEEKS
Dubie on his way; Okay, back to the KC story

Goalie and game discussion thread here. Kansas City/Lighthouse – in our opinion the far greater story today - next thread.

85 Responses to MacDONALD OUT 2-4 WEEKS
Dubie on his way; Okay, back to the KC story

  1. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

    DUBIE AGREES TO A 1 YEAR, PRO-RATED 500K.

  2. avatar Hank says:

Dubie should play some games in Bridgeport first, so he is use to the Islanders 3rd period let downs!

  3. avatar DP says:

That means 4 weeks at least, so tell me again why we passed on Sanford?? Oh yeah we want to lose every game between now and end of season, play to empty stands and demoralize the team and fans. Einsteins all!

  4. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

    i’d rather dubie than sanford.

  5. avatar Gary says:

Dubie was playing in Russia, so he doesn’t need that much time

  6. avatar cgs878 says:

Dubie is used to the Islanders’ D gaffes. He’ll slip right back into place.

  7. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

I’m glad they kept it “In the Family” and signed Dubie.

  8. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Dubie will be a good backup to Mcdonald. For the next 4 weeks I would play dubie and danis every other game. When dubie comes back play mcdonald 50% and dubie 50 %.

  9. avatar Klynch says:

I think it is safe to say we won’t see number 39 again this season. Is it time to worry about the rest of his career?

  10. avatar phil says:

this is nuts! the bigger question…if/when DP ever comes back (next season?) who will be his backup? joey or old skool dubie? my opinion depends on their performance for the rest of the season.

  11. avatar Don't Mind the Haters says:

Sanford has been having Groin and Back problems this year that’s why the Canuckleheads picked up LaBarbara. So there’s no point in the Isles picking up another often injured goalie.

Plus Dubie is somewhat of a “fan favorite”.

    Good move by Snow

  12. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

what number will he wear?? will denis give up his 34??

  13. avatar Nick Classic says:

Either Dubie or Sanford would do the same job here, we needed the depth, and Dubie made a ton of sense. Why not?

  14. avatar Chris TMC says:

    :) Welcome back, Dubie!
One of the only good things to come out of this unbelievably unfortunate situation.

  15. avatar BeatleBailey says:

over under on a Dubie groan pull? 2 weeks..what are the guys doing back in the weightroom?..lol

  16. avatar isles316 says:

this is the most bizarre season ever

  17. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Dubie is not a good goalie. With this team I expect him to have a 3.50 gaa.

  18. avatar volmeeezy says:

Hey at least the fans like dubie .. hearing the “doooooobie” chants after every save will at least add some enjoyment to the games at the barn.. being a season ticket holder i can say that the atmosphere has been dead , especially at the ranger game the other night… dubie will hopefully add a little buzz as the losses keep piling up .. lets go islessssss

  19. avatar Gary says:

Dubie will be fine. He should have been here from the start. Macdonald has played well, but he’s not as good as Dubie.

  20. avatar BR says:

Dubie is a known quantity to this team and its fans, so this is a good move.
It also tells me that DP is going to be shut-down for the season. I hope this satisfies the people who have been screaming for it…

I would hope that neither Dubie nor Macdonald are back here next season. As someone pointed-out earlier, there are several back-up quality goalies hitting the market this summer.

  21. avatar cgs878 says:

    Dubie should wear #1

  22. avatar Tim says:

IF DP makes a healthy return next season, the back up will be neither MacDonald nor Dubie. DP does not get along with Dubie, and at this point, MacDonald poses a threat to DP’s position as untouchable number one goalie. My bet? Manninno or Danis. After all, this team revolves around DP’s enormous head. Why would we want to challenge his number one status before he gets injured again?

  23. avatar nightfly says:

???? I think Joey Mac has done well in bad circumstances, but really, a threat to DiPi’s job? Not remotely.

  24. avatar Fauxrumors says:

    1) “Doobie” couldn’t cut it in the much weaker KHL. What makes anyone believe that he’s going to be an upgrade from Danis? Has 3oth place been solidified today?

  25. avatar The Mick says:

What are you basing that wonderful analysis on Tim?

  26. avatar Johnny Islander says:

#22 Any proof of a DP/Dubie dislike? J-Mac is not a #1 NHL goalie. Mannino has lost 8 of his last 11 in BP and is a .500 AHL goalie. Doubt he’s going to be an NHL backup next year.

  27. avatar BrassBonanza says:

Tim are you crazy? In no way does Joey MacDonald pose any threat to Ricky. He is this club’s marquee player, The face of the franchise. Joey is a servicable backup but he is no Ricky, lets get real here.

  28. avatar Nick Classic says:

I think after this year it’s far more likely the Islanders make a run at a 1A goalie like Fernandez, Raycroft, or Conklin in order to spell DP. These conspiracy theorists are grasping at straws.

  29. avatar WarrenG says:

I think JOeMac has done a huge job for us this year, and should deff be retained as the backup for next year. Dubi is dubie, but please, JOEYMAC has been HUGE for us and only had a few bad games. He is also young and after 36 games in over 40, hes a work horse. If we dont keep him, he will deff get signed as a 1a backup somewhere else. He deserves a shot next year with this team, unless DUBI takes the next 30 games and wins them all ( ROFLMAO) Lets GO Islanders!

  30. avatar Tim says:

haha… I’m basing it on the fact that the “out of shape” Dubie had better stats than DP last year and they dumped him so they could bring in an unproven minor league (who luckily panned out). Now that MacDonald has proven himself, and has put up decent stats, it would be a threat to DP’s ego if they had a backup with better stats than The Almighty One. Has anyone noticed that after Dunham retired, we have had a series of unproven AHL goalies as DP’s backups? It’s not a coincidence folks. I think the Isles have about as good a chance at bringing in an “A-1″ goalie as DiPietro has of staying healthy and fulfilling his contract. Because, as you all know, President DP calls the shots here. We wouldn’t want a goalie who could usurp Mr. 15-year-contract, now would we?

  31. avatar canada-isl#1fan says:

    TO PHIL COMMENT#10

MAC WILL BE THE #1 AND DUBIE #2 CAUSE DP WILL BE TRADE….TIME WILL TELL MY FRIEND.

  32. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Oh boy… DP is going to be traded now? LOL maybe we could trade him to the Rags for their medical staff.

  33. avatar kevin says:

DDDUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBIE!! good news. i say we chant russia instead. jk jk

  34. avatar kevin says:

we should go for conklin next year. he is really good and will def help us. when he was with pittsburgh he was beast

  35. avatar frank nyc says:

Sign Sanford to 1 year deal.
Leave Dubie alone. The guys had a .847 save % in the Khl this year. If he is getting bought out by a russian team why would he be any better here??
This whole KC thing is a bit scary. If it is a threat it is more than understandable. Maybe this leads to more action from Nassau county. Hope so.

  36. avatar IsleofNJ says:

How much is Dubie’s new contract in rubles ?

  37. avatar Chris H says:

I think Dubie is going to be fine and will fill in nicely. As for next year, let’s see what the verdict is on DP. Obviously we know he is more almost as fragile is not moreso than Martinek. Maybe Superman can do something to pull himself together. But no way he is going to be traded – no one would be dumb enough to pick up that contract. I agree we need a better backup though and Garth should seriously start putting a list together – and keep DP out of that decision…if he doesn’t like it then too bad…maybe it will force him to play better if someone is truly challenging him.

  38. avatar Goalfarb11 says:

Why is everyone so in love with Sanford?Does it really matter who tends goal the rest of the season??? They could have Gump Worsley and it won’t matter.
They have far too many injuries and holes on this roster, that the goalie at this point is irrelevant.
Play the kids, kids and more kids.

  39. avatar Dmarie says:

ahhh dubie dubie dooo! I’m fine with him coming back..Welcome welcome!..
What will the dynamtic duo of Garth an Gordon do next.. ;)

  40. avatar Dmarie says:

oops sorry, that should have been dynamic duo..my hands still frozen from shoveling..

  41. avatar doc says:

    Tim:
With all due respect… I think CB put the DiPietro “runs the club” rumors and falsities to rest in previous blogs.

Believe what you want to believe… but I don’t think DiPietro had problems with Dubie, Asham or any other player any more than Asham had problems with Yashin, Witt, Martinek, Hunter etc.

Notice that Asham didn’t exactly stick with Philly last year… or that Dubie didn’t sign with any other NHL club this year?

    Coincidence…?

DiPietro did not cause our economic disaster either.

    DOC

  42. avatar MiKe says:

I’m sure the Isles would be greeted with open arms in KC. The exact opposite of how Nassau county has treated the team for the longest time…this team deserves better and maybe KC is where theyd finally get it.

  43. avatar MiKe says:

Hey CB! You mentioned moving/trading Bill Guerin to Boston. Who exactly is available from the Bs???

  44. avatar Tim says:

Doc, CB is an “independent” writer with a big link on the Isles Official Web Site. That’s not a shot, but a fact. He’s done a tremendous job, but he has a knack for following up jabs with pats on the back. I’m sorry, but I don’t take the former PR man’s words as gospel. A lot of his blog relies on contacts, contacts that wouldn’t talk if he didn’t sugarcoat once in a while. So I will continue to believe what I believe. Nothing was put to rest on this blog, as far as I’m concerned. There is no question in my mind that DP’s fifteen year contract gives him significant input in the future of the org. Though with the injuries mounting, this may be going on less and less. We shall see this summer…

I’m fine with taking back the DP vs. Dubie thing, since there is no CONCRETE proof (but…a serviceable Dubie was let go in favor of an unproven AHLer and DP threw a fit when he sat the infamous Rags game out), and there’s no questioning any of that.

  45. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

This will be KC’s problem in short order.

  46. avatar James says:

Why is everyone so in love with MacD. Yes, he has stepped in and played a tremendous amount of games for us this year, and the team in front of him sucks. BUT, hes had 15 games where hes allowed 4 goals or more, he gives the other team an extra 10 shots a game at least cause he cant control rebounds at all. Hes at the bottom of the league in GAA, GA and save percentage. Sometimes a goalie has to steal a game here and there and he doesnt do that enough. 11 wins is 11 wins no matter what way you slice it. Do i like him? Sure he seems like a good guy and a decent backup, but to ever challenge for a legitmate number 1 spot on any team seems pretty far fetched. Good luck Dubie!

  47. avatar Greg G says:

MacDonald is no number one but he is a really solid backup and hes seen plenty of ice time maybe a good use for him is a trade during the draft. trade him and our second or third round pick for a higher second or third round pick. hes a great acquisition for any team that needs more depth between the pipes

  48. avatar doc says:

The so called “fact” that DiPietro threw a fit is also an urban legend. Did you see that he had a fit…?

Or that he was just not looking happy to be sitting out?

Can’t a guy just be unhappy that he wasn’t feeling good enough physically to play? Wouldn’t you be disappointed?

Where and when was this so called fit?

    I just don’t get it.

And, MacDonald was signed to the 1 way contract the year prior to this season… so it was not an option to have 3 NHL one way contracts. So Dubie was the odd man out unless he agreed to a 2 way deal.

    DOC

  49. avatar doc says:

You might not like the fact that MacDonald had a 1 way deal… but it was already in place. Who knew Dubie would emerge? He chose to not sign a deal (2 way offer).

    DOC

  50. avatar Nick Classic says:

Tim – is it possible in your black-and-white view of CB and the Islanders that he’s actually being fair? Seems to me that CB calls out the Islanders when they deserve it and praises/defends them when that’s warranted. You’re presenting as indisputable fact something that was never proven, and when Doc pointed that out you repeated the same argument and pointed out CB’s own position as if it justified it. Not everything requires a tinfoil hat.

  51. avatar Nick Classic says:

    CB’s OLD position, sorry

  52. avatar Marc from Troy says:

Ah, yes. CB “has a knack for following up jabs with pats on the back.” Because clearly the only way he can prove his independence is to write only negative stories about the Islanders! Good catch!!

    Conspiracy theorists unite!

  53. avatar mkinPORMD says:

Can someone else please look @ Nathan Lawson’s stats? He needs a contract and is playing out of his mind in bport. IMO he would be a great 1b goalie.

  54. avatar Tim says:

Exhibit A: Following that infamous game, Nolan had this to say:

“Ricky has to concentrate on being a goaltender and we’ll concentrate on coaching the team.”

Now please tell me, if DP didn’t bitch and moan, then why would Nolan come out and say this?

  55. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Here would be a total irony …

Dubie steals enough games … as he did a couple of years ago and the Isles finish 26th … then they don’t even win the lottery … and Dubie goes from Isles fan cult favorite for being the savior from 2 years ago … to further putting the Isles’ future in peril … it can happen … yeah … I know whattcha thinkin … that isn’t at all likely … heck it’s as likely as a plane crashing in the Hudson River into freezing cold water with the air temperature hovering around 20 degrees and everyone surviving … Oh wait a minute check that.
    ————–
Miracles can happen fellow fans … maybe somehow someway it can happen to the Isles …. Thank God for those people on that plane … good feeling kinda story.

  56. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Off topic but agreed..,that pilot is a true hero.

  57. avatar Jim says:

Is that CB behind Jack Edwards and Brick?

  58. avatar admin says:

    yes…CB

  59. avatar Jim says:

If you can actually hear Edwards and have to listen to him all game, I feel bad for you.

  60. avatar doc says:

Ted Nolan is not exactly the bastion of communication or truths…

Fine coach who’s had exactly 2 jobs in 12 years in the NHL with a 10 year hiatus between jobs. Hmmm…. I wonder why…???

    DOC

  61. avatar goislesgo105 says:

The pilots, crew and rescue teams all did a great job saving all of those people!!! Makes you proud to be a New Yorker!! THANKS! Go ISLES

  62. avatar Pedro says:

    Why is Bergenheim scratched?

  63. avatar Nick Classic says:

Bergy is injured, and it is absolutely a miracle that nobody was injured in that crash.

  64. avatar The Losers says:

Anyone have more info on Bergy? I understand he’s injured, but what exactly? When did it happen? (If this has been asked/answered before, sorry for the question)

P.S. Great job by the pilot, the NYPD, the FDNY, NY ferries and everyone else! It was scary to watch.

  65. avatar Glenn says:

For a second I thought Bergy was on the plane! Glad all are ok, in all seriousness.

Here’s hoping to move one step closer to Tavares tonight!

  66. avatar MT says:

They said ‘strained side’ whatever that means

  67. avatar TuxTax says:

Exactly where is goalie interference called? 5 or 6 feet out of the crease?

  68. avatar Pedro says:

Isles’ site says Bergy is a healthy scratch, which I find frustrating and perplexing. If we are going to go with a “play the kids” approach, that should certainly include Bergy. While he does occasionally take bad penalties, he consistently hustles and has a fair amount of skill on a team lacking skill. Sitting him for Sim is a mistake. Not sure Gordon is so down on the guy.

  69. avatar The Losers says:

lol@Tamby hitting Chara, Keep it up Tambs

    Okposo left… ughhhh

  70. avatar Chris TMC says:

Pedro: like post 66 said, he has a “strained side”… he is not a healthy scratch for Sim.

  71. avatar Pedro says:

Thanks, Chris. Didn’t see that post until after posting mine. Shocking to see Isles’ site not effectively disclosing an injury.

  72. avatar Chris TMC says:

“Thanks, Chris. Didn’t see that post until after posting mine. Shocking to see Isles’ site not effectively disclosing an injury.”
LOL! I know what you mean, but they have actually improved in that department. Howie was talking about that at the start of the game, and Jaffe was laughing like, “Well with the amount of injries this team has had…” Its so true!

  73. avatar Chris TMC says:

I have to add: Kyle Okposo is a tough kid! Great to see him back on the bench. :)

  74. avatar chickendirt says:

Did I just see Thornton pull Jackman’s hair in that one?

    What a sissy!!!

  75. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Smith, Colloton, Fritz all guys that should play ahead of Jon Sim.

Sim does not draw penalties he takes bad ones.

Martinek is just cursed, if he isn’t out of position or making a dumb play, he is getting pounded and/or hurt and now he is deciding to injure one of our best players in Okposo. I can’t wait for Martinek and Sim to get gone.

Okposo is really strong on the puck! Comeau is playing well.

We have confirmation from an inside source (Botta) that the LIE that DiPietro and Dubie don’t get a long is a LIE. Why some here have to keep insisting on it is crazy.

Joey MacDonald is a fine back up and improving but he is not now nor will be a threat to DiPietro’s job or any teams #1 goalie unless the other goalie is injured.

  76. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Oh, Walter is another guy who should be playing ahead of Sim.

  77. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Horrible officiating .. Hunter hooked …seconds later Streit called for bogus tripping penalty.

  78. avatar Justin says:

You would never think a goalie in Danis’ position (barely worthy of being in the NHL) would ever be lazy on a play. But he was terrrible on that second goal, just casually moving across the crease while the puck was poked past him. I’m not joking when I say the Isles will draft a goalie in 2009.

  79. avatar Justin says:

How many games do the Isles win the rest of the season? Maybe five?

  80. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I thought the same thing too Justin.

  81. avatar The Losers says:

    Thanks MT

Justin, what is that “win” you’re talking about?

  82. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I think Dubie steals 5 games …. Isles win 9 more.

  83. avatar kevin says:

You are correct when you talk about Joey’s GAA…but you also have to realize he has faced more shots than any other goalie …and he still has a save % at .900. When you break down the goals that are scored on Joey the collapse of the defence is amazing. Also…saying that he gives up too many rebounds is crud…when you are scrambling to make the second or third shot…you are trying to keep it out…PERIOD!!!!

  84. avatar kevin says:

Oh Ya….I believe he is the only Islander this year to be named an NHL top 3 all star for a month.
