MORE HIP SURGERY FOR SILLINGER
Veteran center out for the season

by admin on January 27th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

6:15 pm - The Islanders have just announced that Mike Sillinger is out for the season after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in New York yesterday, his second hip surgery in the last year.

On January 2, knowing his season – and quite possibly his NHL career – was done, we wrote this ode to the man they call Silli. He could be in Saskatoon for Islanders training camp in September, but whether it’s as a 38-year old member of the roster would seem to be very much in question.

Time for Silli to change his title … Asst. Coach.

I guess we knew this was coming … Silli … Thanks for giving it all that you did … Your contributions are very much appreciated … You did the Isles Sweater proud … look forward to seeing you behind the bench helping Gordo next Fall.

    Get well soon.

    what a shame….
hip injuries didnt exist in the nhl a decade ago….Is this because of better surgery or the overzealousness around stretching before workouts? Time to rethink how these guys prepare….

  3. avatar Johnny Islander says:

If we can keep Silli as a member of the org even if it’s not as a player, it should be done.

One title I can think of: “Special Assistant for teaching Josh Bailey how to win faceoffs”

  4. avatar Nick Classic says:

All the best to Silly. I wish things had ended differently this year, and regardless of what happens with his health I hope he’s a part of the organization next season.

  5. avatar guerin13 says:

certainly not a surprise. i hope we can keep silly as a coach. total class act that i wish nothing but the best for.

  6. avatar kevin says:

well this is sad. he was such a cornerstone peice for the team. i say we keep him as a member of the org. maybe specialize in face-offs and pk. stuff like that.

  7. Too bad. Even though you could see this coming — even when he first came back this season (“I’ll never feel great anymore,” I think he said.) — it’s still a blow to see official word.

He’s been such a quality player and stand-up guy at all of his stops. I feel lucky to have watched him play a big role with two of his NHL teams.

  8. avatar kevin says:

ha the last comment on that article is funny. any word on fritsche botta? i still cant think of any reason not to get him.

  9. avatar 7thWoman says:

Wishing him a speedy recovery. This is truly a shame.

  10. avatar Strummer's Army says:

If not behind the bench as an assistant I can see him assisting Trottier with player development. They could spend more time with the prospects. Hopefully this next surgery does the trick. After him joining the Isles I wish he would have played more of his career with us. Great player and great person!

  11. avatar KP says:

If he’s done, I would like to see him get a job in the or-gan-i-za-shun.

Class Islander and a leader. Can’t have too many of those around.

  12. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I hope we take fritsche hes a big kid. Hes got to be given a chance with us. Lets see what snow does…

  13. avatar BringTheReign says:

are we still first in line for waivers?

  14. avatar 303Joe says:

Hopefully they pick up Fritsche given the chance I think the kid can play. He still developing his game he’s only 23 and has 22 goals the last 2 years. Atleast he’s proven it at the NHL level we bring up 23 and 24 year old guys that have done nothing at this level. Pick him up you can move a center or finally get rid of Tambellini. I don’t want to hear Tambellini is playing good crap. At the start of the year all we heard was he’s gonna have every chance to prove himself this year and he has done nothing. All of the sudden he doesn’t score we hear how he’s doing the little things well. Well we have enough small guys that don’t do much. Get this kid in and give him a chance. Thank You.

  15. avatar 303Joe says:

In response to comment #13 yes we are. It’s goes by the standings.

  16. avatar Dan says:

Sillinger is a great player. Having him on the Islanders has been good for the youner players. Whatever decision you make Silly good luck!!

  17. avatar doc says:

Sillinger is one of those players that you are not sure how valuable he is until you don’t have him anymore.

He does a lot of things very well… no flash, no style… but just good hard nosed hockey.

Happy to have seen him play and gain that appreciation for his game… albeit retrospectively.

  18. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Tough break. You hope that’s not how his goes out – you always hope the player choses when to go, not his body or the docs.

Character guy. Would be good in the organization in any capacity.

  19. avatar bcarroll25 says:

let him take cairn’s spot, we can’t fight, maybe we can win a faceoff

  20. avatar bcarroll25 says:

cb– totally different thought, i was perusing the hf boards and can’t say i’m suprised, but as everyone except sather knew the contract redden signed is/was an albatross.where i’m going is 1995 and i vaguely remember the knock on redden being too “skinny” for the nhl.and when berard wouldn’t report a trade was made.can you shed some light on this or to the second worse trade mm made?

  21. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

sillinger would be a good scout or some type of coach…

  22. avatar Dmarie says:

ahhh poor guy, I feel for him, I hope all turns out well for him whatever he should decide to do. Maybe if he’s into it he can become some sort of coach, or whatever, Or maybe just retire and enjoy having free time. Good Luck Silli!

  23. avatar cgs878 says:

Good luck in your future hockey endeavors, Mr. Sillinger. We’d like to keep you as part of the Islanders, if possible. If you retire from playing hockey, you will be missed.

  24. avatar Willis says:

Best of luck to you Mike and thanks for your effort and enthusiasm.

  25. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

Get well soon Mike! If Isles will not put you on the ice next season, they have to find a place for you in the organization, at least to recognize everything you have done for them and for us. But I still hope you can put some show on the ice in the 2009-2010.

  26. avatar Tony says:

    Mike,
thanks for being a true Islander and giving us fans someone to be proud of. You’re a class act and I wish you a speedy recovery.

  27. Good luck Mike…..sorry it may end like this. A must for the Islanders to consider keeping in the organization.
