THE NYI ON K.O. BEING A NO-GO
Trevor Smith to Bport…Everyone’s Favorite Drink

UPDATED 7:25 pm: Kyle Okposo didn’t get named to the rookie team of the Young Stars Game. I would have thought Okposo’s ability and story would have been a nice one for the NHL to showcase over All-Star Weekend, but the league did not agree. They can’t take everyone. Maybe he will make it as a soph.

In response to a request for the team’s reaction, the Islanders provided this statement to Point Blank: “We are disappointed that Kyle wasn’t selected for the Young Stars Game,” said general manager Garth Snow. “We have really seen signs this year of the bright future he has.”

*

Trevor Smith and Yann Danis returned to Bridgeport. Perhaps Frans Nielsen could return next week. The Islanders don’t play until Tuesday and Smith could use the time in the AHL and the Sound Tigers could use him.

Any chance we can retire the expression “drink the Kool-Aid”? As in when you don’t agree with something I write, I’m serving the Kool-Aid and all the fans who disagree with you are guzzling it? Cliche got old more than a decade ago. Also seems like something people say when they don’t have a better argument.

Think Smith is being sent down because of the extended break or is a F ready to return? Either way, I’m sure we’ll see him again before too long.

  2. 2 islestherapy

sounds like someone drank the tang.

  3. 3 UNH Steve

Very sad to see Trevor get sent down after having a few good games with the team and getting his first goal last night. The only good news that might come from this would be the return of Frans to the lineup.

  4. 4 Johnny Islander

    I preferred Sunny-D.

Rumor has it Frans will be back for the Rags game.

  5. 5 Johnny Islander

With CB in “timeout”, the blog has become more like Crystal Light than Kool-aid…

  6. 6 guerin13

we’ll see trevor back here when we start dealing people out of here. i think he’s a full time islander next season. frans gave an interview with a danish newspaper and he said he would be playing on tuesday. who knows at this point where danis is come tuesday.

  7. 7 Ted

Will Frans go for a conditioning stint at the Bridge before coming back to the Isles? I’m a fan of the mysterious “purple stuff” from the old Sunny-D commercials.

  8. 8 Macch

Wow Smith down. I wonder what that convo was like.
    - “Hey Trevor congrats on your first goal”
    - “THank you”
    - “Here is your ticket back to Bridgeport, we’ll see you later”

    ohhhhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaa

  9. 9 Justin Marques

    Maach:

I doubt it was anything like that haha. It was probably more along the lines of “Hey Trevor, congratulations on your first goal. We have been very impressed with your play as of late and your hard work. Since we are off for the next few days, we figure it would be beneficial to you to play in a few games and then come back up sooner rather than later.”

  10. 10 Macch

I know i was just kidding around… Still has to be sucky news the day after you score your first goal though

  11. 11 Omee

Kyle O will make it next year. If he keeps performing like he did last night, great things are going to happen for this kid.
Good on Trevor for getting his first goal. The kid has some size and speed. He’s not ready though. Let him work on his game in Bridgport. Next year though..hmmmmm.

  12. 12 BSTSTH18

Why not waive Sim again and have him and Smith switch places. Then again him coming back to bridgeport is good for us…

  13. 13 Johnny Islander

Don’t know if he’ll be back soon or not, but either way the Isles were going to save a few bucks by not paying him an NHL salary the next few off days.

  14. 14 mrlbem

Sure, no more references to artificially sweetened drinks. Just one question, though, when people refer to those of us who are less than overly impressed with the Franchise Goaltender as “Dipietro Haters,” does that also mean they don’t have a better argument? Just askin’. I mean I compared Ricky to Phil Simms, the greatest QB ever to play for my beloved Giants (the only area team I root for that seems to be able to win a championship occasionally over the last 20 years, but I digress). I would not mention Simms and Ricky in the same breath if I hated him.

  15. 15 kevin

gotta suck for trevor even though he is probably going to be jumping for joy on march 5th.

  16. 16 Isle_in_LA

So you’re saying we should all wipe the red moustaches off? Damn, I was just beginning to like mine. J/k

  17. 17 kevin

john tavares got traded to the london knights like 2 days ago i think and they have an interview with him on tsn and it reminds me of ryan smyths reaction when he got traded. you look at him and forget that he is only 18

  18. 18 kevin

hey cb.. rhett rashinki (sp) plays with bozak. i know he doesnt play for us yet but is it possible he may encourage bpzak to sign here? also i was reading this article that had this guy interview taylor hall and he says he models his play after tavares and likes playing with him ( not sure where they played together since tavares is on the london knights and was on oshawa generals and hall was on the windsor spitfires) and that he was looking forward to playing with him had he been traded there. also, did hall play with bailey???

  19. 19 Cam

Sound Tigers could certainly use Smith back - what does he need time in the AHL for though? His game got better and better in each game he played up and scored a nice goal last night. He’s not going to get better playing down. Sim is totally useless out there - need to trade him and a 4th round pick for a literal bag of pucks to make room for Smith.

  20. 20 Andreas the Badger

Why is Stamkos picked ahead of Okposo? KO is 5-8-13 in 29 games while Stamkos is 4-10-14 in 40 and with a worse +/-. The latter is also being scratched now to bulk up - midseason! KO has a better point average, more goals and is hot. I guess the only thing he’s lacking is the 1st overall status.
Here’s to hoping KO will build a huge chip on his shoulder after being passed by.

  21. 21 SIR WILLIAM

Who cares about the “Young Stars” game? If I recall, Okposo was nursing and injury over the last month.

Let him take the time off to heal that wrist and not reinjure it….SW

  22. 22 mrlbem

Is there an age limit or a years in the NHL limit after which you’re no longer elligible to be considered for the Young Stars game?

  23. 23 Dave

CB, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I was beginning to think that I was the only one who was annoyed by the drinking the kool-aid bit. Anytime you disagree with someone ragarding the direction of the team it’s always “ohh,,you’re drinking the kool-aid too heh”? And then that somehow makes them feel that they have won the argument! While your at it CB can we do away with the “he’s wearing rose colored glasses” thing?

  24. 24 The PolishPrince

CB - great suggestion to retire the “Kool Aid ” thing. I was thinking the same thing today especially considering the morbid origins of the whole expression.
With regars to KO, hope he makes it in next year. He’s been a little bit better ever single game.

  25. 25 jimmy

i really hope trevor smith gets to come back sooon i really liked what he brought to the table… Do I think he’ll be a star in this league absolutly not but he’s the type of role player that it takes to build a winning team

  26. 26 7thWoman

Wouldn’t they be sending Smith and Danis back because there’s a game tomorrow in Bridge? The koolaide will always mix well with vodka, but whatever. Glad your time out seems to be done. lines of communication have been restored, all is right with the world.

  27. 27 Justin

I know it means nothing in the big picture, but it would’ve been a nice thing for this team to get either Okposo or Bailey in the YoungStars game. And the Isles could really use some good national publicity now more than ever. Perhaps that comes with the lottery.

  28. 28 UIF

Jimmy - he’s a role player who doesn’t spaz out when he gets around the net, which is refreshing.

  29. 29 Doug F.

    CB,

I was watching the Minnesota vs North Dakota game on DirecTV and I saw Aaron Ness is on the first line defense. He looks small but I saw a forward on North Dakota, Jason Gregoire who just scored a goal. So I did a google search on him to see who drafted him. As it turned out he wa spicked by our favorite hockey team…the Islanders. What the story on him…he looks impressive…plays on the first line at North Dakota.

  30. 30 IslesAl

CB, I agree that DP is talented, but I believe you are skirting the issue. The key comment to me is when Gordon said DP was ‘medically cleared to play.’ What exactly does that mean? How could he be medically cleared, but then injured again and again? How many times have we been told he is healthy, then he is not? How many times have Islander players been reinjured after returning to the lineup after injury? Why is a relatively young team among the tops in the league year after year in manpower games lost? Why can we not get a reasonable estimate of time an injured player is expected to be out of the lineup? And most importantly, if he has been healthy and reinjured this year (at least five times) on a team in last place, after four (?) surgeries in the last year and a half, why are none of the team’s medical ’specialists’ telling the NYI that this is serious, its constantly getting worse, its best just to rest him for the majority of the season? We have him for more than another decade, why risk career threatening injury for 29th place?

  31. 31 doc

Thank CB… you are a gentlemen and a scholar.

    DOC

  32. 32 Dally Mac

Thing is Okposo won’t make it next year either, because, it’s an Olympic year, and no All-star game. Maybe when he’s 22, the year after. I think 23 is too old.

  33. 33 Pritchett54

I love the Kool Aid expression. What is better than referencing religious cult who had a mass suicide 30 years ago when talking about our Islanders? I wish Jim Jones was our GM, maybe we would be better off.

  34. 34 Matt

How much you want to bet he doesn’t make it a half a decade? I loved Gordon’s interview with Logan, classic. This is all top secret info here guys! I wonder if Snow and Gordon realize how idiotic they both sound talking in circles and treating the press and their fans like idiots. It gets a little less insulting each time they do it, probably because I’m starting not to care.

  35. 35 Islanders1984

Stamkos named to all rookie team and is a healthy scratch tonight. Not saying Okposo definately deserved to be named to young stars. But stamkos should not be in the game. Sometimes NHL is laughable

  36. 36 Tiki

OK is not that impressive to me….surely no power forward. I think he has upside, but, I doubt hes a future star.
Cool aid with Ketel One is ok.

  37. 37 beatlebailey

the NHL is a joke….Sidney Crosby assaults a man’s groin and gets a minor penalty and avery gets 6 games and driven out of the league for saying naughty words…

  38. 38 Matt

Yes it is. The handling of Cindy the tough girl is a joke. I’m beginning to think she is a Tom boy!

  39. 39 GasMD

Yeah, Matt. I’ve lost all respect for that ball buster. I think I saw that move in a porno once. j/k. I think.

  40. 40 cgs878

So after working hard for 5 games in 9 days, Trevor isn’t given a nice rest as a reward. Instead, he’s asked to work harder by going to Bridgeport and playing. Go figure.

When is the next Islanders workout at Iceworks?? I wanna go watch.

  41. 41 Matt

At least we still have Jon Sim in the line up. If Smith isn’t in the line up against the Rangers you really have to wonder about the thought process. Hey kid great job, nice first goal. The fans love your work ethic. Now hop in your car and beat it back to the minors. We can’t have you eat up anymore of the vets minutes. I know we said it was about youth, buttttt! I know he is a center and that leads us back to the keep Weight argument. Oh well!!!

  42. 42 BringBackNyles

Your right CB..its time to kill the drink the Kool-Aid line, we all know Hawaiian Punch is better!

  43. 43 dmen77

The Bolts and Blues were both winners tonight!

Now we just need the Sens to beat the Rags tomorrow and we can comfortably hope for an Isles win over the Rags on Tuesday without leapfrogging anyone.

The dominos are falling in our direction so far!

There is no point to giving him a “rest” when what the kid really wants to do is prove himself. Its better for him to play, and he doesnt live here on LI, anyway.

The Isles send 2-wayers back during breaks like this all the time- its economical, it allows them to be closer to where they live, and it gets them ice time where they are needed. They did it with Tim Jackman but he came back for the next Isles game. Im not saying that Trev is a lock to come back Im just saying that at this point there is no reason to assume either way.

  45. 45 b-ri

A lot of people have been getting on Okposo it seems in the comments. Have you guys forgotten that he is 20 years old? He may not be a “star” player, but give him a little time to develope and i think that youll be pretty happy with the results. Comparisons to Iginla remember…I don’t totally buy it, he’ll never get you 50 goals…but i think he’ll eventually get you 20-25

  46. 46 Islander505

I’m with 7th Woman….Kool-Aid without Vodka is a sin once you reach a certain age.
It’s kinda like mentioning MAB and not drinking…..

    SHOTS!!!!!

Big Whoop….no KO in the Futures Game…
    Just as well….
Last Islander to participate in the last “Mid-Season Stupid Chance To Be Injured Tournament” hasn’t been the same since…

    Stay Safe Mark Streit….
Just play it like a no check, no blocked shots (Unless they’re tequila) tournament.

  47. 47 Islander505

    ATTN TREVOR SMITH….

We hardly knew ya…..but you’ll be back..
Good job…keep up the hard work.

  48. 48 Joe

    Whens Thompson back?

  49. 49 brian

Last time I checked the Islanders possessed the worst record in the NHL and started the season with the second oldest team in the division after the Devils. Yet, we want two All Stars (Weight and Streit), we want two players in the Young Stars game (Bailey with his 1 whole goal and Kyle) and we want the Masterton Trophy (Weight).

I wonder what you guys would be expecting if we were just the 5th or 6th worst team in hockey as opposed to the worst? 5 All Stars?

  50. 50 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Stamkos .. Healthy Scracth last night!!! Yet is a “Young Star”?

KO not only has a better PPG avg … but he plays much better without the puck than Stamkos … NHL YSG is a total joke … turned into a popularity contest … that goes for the ASG too.

The games have become the sports equivalent of the MTV awards … style over substance.

505-Thats how Streit plays it every game and thats why he’s not a legit All Star IMO. I think Sutton was the Isles best d-man.

  54. 54 nightfly

brian, take it easy. “We” didn’t say any of that about two all stars, two young stars. Most of those threads were debates on whether Streit OR Weight would go to the game, not both. (There may have been one or two comments but that’s hardly a full-blown consensus.) Same thing with the young stars, I don’t see a lot of folks crying about Bailey staying home (again, MAYBE a couple), most folks are upset about KO only.

Some really bad teams have great individual performers, and some teams do very well without a single outstanding player. Also consider that a great player on a bad team tends to stand out more than a great player surrounded by other good players.

  55. 55 jon

The best player I saw in the WJC was Cody Hodgson. He is a better talent than Bailey and the Isles erred in selecting Bailey over him. May not be quite the mistake of taking Okposo over Mueller but may rank with it.

  56. 56 thepolishprince

We didn’t see Bailey play in the WJC. Whether or not we should have has been discussed elsewhere. Fact is stating Hodgson is a better talent than Bailey based on one’s performance against boys and one’s performance against men seems flawed to me. Just my opinion…

  57. 57 dmen77

I need someone to explain to me how we erred in picking an 18 yr old kid over another 18 yr old kid in just 1-3 years after those selections were made, when all players are in the NHL currently.

If someone wants to say something about drafting a 1st Round player 6-7 years down the road when that player becomes a true bust, I’m all ears….

But in all honesty how can someone realistically make a determination on certain players in their rookie/sophomore years….it’s just insane to say one won’t be as good as another passed up on.

I much rather hear complaints about why we didn’t have players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg in the later rounds like the Wings did. That’s why the Wings are the defending champs and are consistantly winning without top 5 draft picks.

They develop later round picks into their superstars. They have one of their own 1st Round picks on their roster currently, ONE!

Lets be more upset drafting Connolly, Pyatt, Mezei, Kudroc, Weinhandl, Collins, Kolnik, Halvardsson, Mapletoft, Johnson and Melin in 1999 instead of Zetterberg.
Those decisions set us back further than drafting Okposo or Bailey.

The point is don’t bash 1st Round selections when the players we selected are playing in the NHL at such a young age and look like they will be contributers.

Blast the like picks of Halvardsson or Collins instead.

  58. 58 UIF

brian - Tampa Bay is hovering around the worst record in the league as well…would you have been utterly shocked if both, say, Lecavalier and St. Louis made the ASG? Obviously we’re talking about a different level of talent, but the point is a bad team record doesn’t necessarily mean that team does not have two individual performers.

  59. 59 kevin

logans article in the paper made me happy. cant wait to see some moves. shouldnt weight keep his comments ” in the family” i want whoever get traded with the best coming back. not streit okposo bailey or our first rounder. also comeau . pretty much all prospects untouchable

  60. 60 doc

I personally don’t have any issues with what Weight said in Logan’s article. Basically saying; “I want to play… I want to contribute and I feel like I should still be given the opportunity because I am earning my playing time…”

He realises that he might not get as much playing time in all aspects of the game… but he doesn’t want to play 7 minutes either.

    Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

    DOC

  61. 61 Chris TMC

Very reasonable. The guy wants to play and contribute? Um, isnt he supposed to want to do that?

Its funny- if he said the opposite like he doesnt care if he gets minutes or whatever then then people would say THAT was his ticket out. No matter what he says, people will process it in their minds to mean what they want.

LOL!!!!! Yeah in what crazy world would the top scoring defenseman in the entire NHL be considered as an All-star? What a travesty! :D

  63. 63 kevin

it was the part where he said again that he didnt sign to play 5 months but a full year. when i read it it sounded like he was pissed. does this mean that trade talks are up again??

  64. 64 Dally Mac

I always felt, that Hodgson was the better choice than Bailey, but I’m not going to jump to conclusions that he’s better, due to his WJC performace. I feel if Bailey were there, we’d have been able to see how he matched up against his peers. So we can’t judge Hodgson by his WJC performance cause he was there and Josh was in the NHL. A grand mistake. And as far as I’m concerned, Bailey should still be in Junior. I also have no problem with Smith being sent down either. The minor leagues are used to grow players, the NHL is the finishing ground. Don’t worry you’ll all have your way and Witt and Comrie and Sim will be gone and then Smith and Hillen will be back. But no crying over Weight going with them. OK

  65. 65 THS

Someone please explain to me why we have Jon Sim on the roster and send down an impressive Trevor Smith. Some things I just don’t get.

  66. 66 Dally Mac

Because Trevor Smith is a prospect who will get more than enough games with the Islanders after the trade deadline. Read above.

  67. 67 Dadi

Sim is not Smith’s problem at all. Frans and Thompson are both coming back so it’s logical to send Trevor back to Bridge. He will get some quality minutes there and will be back soon…

  68. 68 Steve Webb Jr.

K.O. did not deserve to go and neither did any of the isles other “young stars” the fact of the matter is that we are in the middle of a “rebuild” but the players we are building on aren’t good enough. Who here thought when we started the year with the 5th pick in the draft and a supposed “youth movement” that we would have no one in the young guns game. I didn’t I thought K.O at the very least would go. I agree with the NHL’s decision to leave him out. he has not preformed.

  69. 69 Steve Webb Jr.

P.S. forget about Sim, why is Tambellini has 6 points in like thirty something games. this year and he had plenty of time to show something last year. He is not an NHL calibur player, Send him down for Trevor

  70. 70 Ed J

Smith will be back. Still do not understand why Sim is still on this team.

    Smith > Sim imo….
