POSTCARD FROM MONTREAL
Mark Streit checks in from All-Star Weekend

by admin on January 24th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Saturday, 3:45 pm: Islanders all-star defenseman Mark Streit, as told to Point Blank:

“This has been an unbelievable experience so far. I arrived in Montreal on Thursday night so I could enjoy the atmosphere for the longest amount of time. On Friday morning, there was a hospitality breakfast for the arriving players and I spent a few hours with Swiss TV. I gave them a tour of the city and showed them where I used to live when I was with the Canadiens.

“This is a big deal for the people back home, and it’s an honor for me to represent them and, of course, the Islanders. I want to say hello to everyone in Switzerland and all of the Islanders fans who have given me such great support since I joined the team.

“On Friday afternoon there was a Players Association meeting and another one where we went over the details for the Skills Competition. I’m in the Hardest Shot group against so many great players and I’m really looking forward to that. Mid-day there was the first media availability. I guess because I played for the Canadiens, I was a pretty popular interview. I did interviews in English, French and German!

“My parents arrived yesterday from Switzerland. I hadn’t seen them in three months so this is really special. They played such a big part in my making it to the NHL and now the All-Star Game. I caught up with some of my old teammates like Alex Kovalev and Andrei Markov. Great guys. I’m sure I’ll see Price and all the guys later on.

“Last night I went out for a quick drink with Bruno Gervais and met up with some of the other players. It was a blast. The city of Montreal is so into it. Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, there’s something about All-Star Weekend. I am so proud to be a part of it.”

its at seven right? should be cool. my money is on souray and chara but i wouldnt be suprised at all if streit came in first or second. this is a really tough group because they all have rockets. vinny came in second last year i think. and weber has a rocket from what ive heard. the odd man out is komi becuase from what ive heard from canadiens is that he wont be able to keep up with the rest of these guys

Good for Mark Streit. He seems like a good guy and a great ambassador for the Islanders this weekend.

  3. avatar JOE RVC says:

next year kyle #21 will we there

  4. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Congrats Mark! We are proud your an Islander and expect you to win the shot competition tonight!

  5. avatar Priest says:

Chara is obviously the favorite tonight, since he has won it a couple of time now. But the thing with the hardest shot competition is that depending on where you shoot, it can register a little higher or lower, so really anyone can win if they get a hard shot in just the right spot

  6. avatar Strummer's Army says:

PS: Tell Geravis to spend less time at the bar and more time in the gym!

  7. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

    Mark,

Good job you are an excellent player and we are proud to have you!!

  8. avatar Chris TMC says:

I am so thankful Mark Streit is an Islander!

  9. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

IS GERVAIS EVEN AT A LEGAL AGE TO DRINK?! oh wait… it’s montreal! Going there this summer with my buds, cannot wait!

Great for Mark. He will be a great Islander to come. SO GLAD he came to the Island and not MSG and they got REDDEN. HAHAH! He has been probably the most exciting Islander to watch in the last few years for me considering I’m a defenseman as well. He has played more consistently than any other Islander the past couple of seasons… agree?

  10. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

He will be a great Islander for years to come***

  11. avatar guerin13 says:

congrats to mark. i wonder what the habs fans reaction will be. it would be great if scored a goal and won the hardest shot competition. chris, is it true that the nets may play some games the nvmc next year? you really need to podcast the espn radio show. would be very cool if true.

  12. avatar mw147 says:

In a season of very few highs, seeing Streit as an all-star will be a great moment.
    Thanks, Mark!

  13. avatar MT says:

Go Mark! You’re making the Islander faithful proud!

Wow, where did you hear that? If that happens I will go to my first basketball game!

  15. avatar CT Isles Fan says:

Mark Streit is a great player. One of the best we’ve had in years. His skill is amazing. He deserves to be there. Enjoy Mark.

  16. avatar guerin13 says:

chris tmc – on islandermania, one of the posters said that chris said this today on his show. i didn’t listen so i can’t confirm it.

  17. avatar Chris TMC says:

Thanks :D I missed the show, unfortunately. But if Chris said it on his show, then I guess he has reason to believe that it is true!

  18. avatar ChocolateGuy says:

Mark looked really happy here…Man is it cold here in MTL…Off to the Superskills, hope Streit wins Hardest Shot! BTW, Isles fans, everyone up here is talking about how Tavares is headed to the Island…

  19. avatar effin5 says:

Does anyone know when/if the young stars game is being broadcast? I can’t find anything other than the lineup.
    Thanks!

  20. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Nice stuff. Love the fact he’s going back there as an All Star when the Habs wouldn’t even let him play regular shifts at D.

    Great story. Have fun, Mark.

  21. avatar cusi says:

Congrats Mark…guy is a class act.

You must give Snow credit with this pick up and at a great price.

  22. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

I voted for Mark to the AllStar. Now he’s there. Enjoy your shining on the Montreal’s ice! We will watch and call for your name at the Hardest shot competition. Good luck!

  23. avatar AngryPete says:

I honestly think he will be wearing the C in the near future.

And I have no problem with that!

  24. avatar Dally Mac says:

Trade him at the deadline for a second rounder……lol….we can never have enough seconds…….lol

  25. avatar bryan c says:

anybody know the schedule of events for the skills comp?

  26. avatar beatlebailey says:

i have to get up to montreal to see a game. I wonder if the isles help out their fans who travel to games with tix? Do they have roadtrips?

  27. avatar Travelchic59 says:

Congratulations and best wishes to Mark Streit on his first All-Star appearance. I hope it is the first of many in years to come.

  28. avatar Rich says:

Nick Classic, I am down with any protests or actual work that needs to be done to keep Isles here. I can get a bunch of people to “go to bat” with me as well. We need organization. This site is a great portal for that. But it is going to take more than letters to convince Hempstead to Greenlight the project. As fans we need to show them that educated, passionate people do actually like hockey. The Mets and Yankees get new stadiums in the same year. Do you know why? Politicians love baseball. Not so much hockey. They need to realize that hockey is alive and well on the Island. I have been all over CB about this issue months ago. Let’s figure something out quick.

  29. avatar Jason says:

    Streit rules!

How great would it be if the Isles bought 50 seats to a road game to seel to fans and provided buses for the fans to cheer them on!

  30. avatar The Losers says:

Best of luck to Mark Streit tonight.

  31. avatar Nick Classic says:

Rich – you’re right, and I actually just started a Lighthouse blog to serve as a springboard for that. I’ll email CB about it just to make sure it’s all good to plug it here (don’t want to spam the board). Wheels are in motion.

  32. avatar Nick Classic says:

And best of luck to Mark Streit – even though he was completely given the silent treatment by the Montreal fans just now. Do they not understand the concept of free agency?

  33. avatar jon from nj says:

Good applause for Streit. Nice to see from the Canadiens fans. However, the ridiculous applause for Lecavelier, I guess, as a means of showing him love so MONT. can trade for him, is absurd.

  34. avatar Chris TMC says:

Many of them were silent… but lol, I think thats a lot better than booing the guy because your own team didnt want him!

  35. avatar jon from nj says:

I thought I heard them cheering…could be wrong.

  36. avatar sean says:

Is it just me, or is the reception just terrible on cablevision??

  37. avatar Nick Classic says:

Is anybody else really angry that they suddenly THIS YEAR decided to have phantom goalies in the breakaway challenge?

  38. As always Great article CB, Marl Streit is a true professional !!!!

  39. avatar jon from nj says:

Well, they get to see Dipietro get hurt and now phantom goalies suddenly make more sense. Of course.

  40. avatar kevin says:

    haha ovechkin. what a character

  41. avatar ken says:

that youngstars game was painful to watch.

  42. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

DiPietro is jonesing to play so bad, he probably is one of the anonymous goalies!

  43. avatar jon from nj says:

Is it really any surprise that the Islander is the one who falls?

  44. avatar doc says:

    Geeeezzzz…. if Streit is hurt!!!!

    DOC

  45. avatar ron says:

If the Isles trade Guerin to nYR they should try to get Ansiminov. May have a 90 point season as a 20 year old in AHL.

  46. avatar ken says:

of course its the islander that falls

  47. avatar isles3113 says:

Unbelievable how only our players get hurt in the skills competition… watching it back in slow motion, it looks to me like streit squints(as if he was in pain)while getting up… no more skills competitions for the islanders please!

  48. avatar Tony says:

Holy Crap just heard on the FAN590 in toronto that streit went for xrays on his ankle …CAN YOU BELEIVE THIS LUCK ON THIS FRANCHISE?

  49. avatar Peter DeBenedetto says:

Thank you VS. for not showing a replay of Streit falling. Couldn’t Lundqvist tear a groin???

  50. avatar doc says:

I watched on replay DVR and it does look like he is a bit slow to get up… and in pain but out of nervousness he manages to skate off with a smile. He’s hurt no doubt and I doubt he will play tomorrow.

    Just my opinion.

    DOC

  51. avatar Strummer's Army says:

and Ricky got hurt last year. Boycott the game next year.
