THE SUBSTITUTE FOR THE SUBSTITUTE FOR THE…Don’t expect NYI to reach too far for another goalie

by admin on January 14th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

11:10 pm - Although Curtis Sanford has been placed on waivers by the Vancouver Canucks, indications this evening were that the Islanders were not going to put in a claim for the 29-year old netminder. Instead, their short-term focus appears to be on bringing back Wade Dubielewicz or promoting another goaltender – Peter Mannino or Nathan Lawson – from the minors.

At this point – with the team far out of the playoff hunt and still awaiting word on how long Joey MacDonald will be out – there is simply no reason to make a significant, urgent move or go outside the family to upgrade the goaltending. Then again, the way this saga has unfolded all season, it also wouldn’t surprise us to see some out-of-left-field acquisition between the pipes at tomorrow’s morning skate.

I am fine with giving Danis a chance. Would need to know how long Joey Mac is out to determine if we need the other guys. If Joey is day to day – promote Mannino to back up Danis. If not – then we need to get someone else.

  2. avatar Isles1972 says:

If Snow doesn’t think Joey is the guy for next season and they can get their hands on a good goalie for a reasonable price, why not go for it. It is almost like not having enough good pitching in baseball. Goaltending can win you a lot of hockey games.

  3. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Even though I think Mannanio and Lawson and Danis are good goalies I have this ugly flash back of the last Boston game with MacDonald yanked and Mannanio being hung out to try, Lucic beating up Witt and the Isles just playing like crap.

I would have grabbed Sanford with the options out there unless Snow knows Dubie has already agreed to a deal and is IN GAME SHAPE.

How about they help all the goalies and trade for some big, tough, talented d-men?

  4. avatar Strummer's Army says:

OH, per the minutes of our Mitch Fritz fan club meeting this evening, please call him up for Boston and NJ so we don’t have to watch Lucic, Chara, and Thorton ruff these guys up and Sutter sending out his assasians.

  5. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Who cares who are goalie is the rest of the year. Were better off keeping Danis as the #1 till Mcdonald is ready and making sure we get a top 2 pick.

  6. avatar admin says:

    ISLESFAN999: That was my point…CB

  7. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

Sanford makes 650K, more than we are paying other options (except maybe Dubie). So I concur with CB that this not likely to happen.

Strummer – I thought we were not supposed to release quotes from the fan club meetings. I think it is in the bylaws.

  8. avatar DC23 says:

Why no Sanford….seems like a perfect fit. Only makes about $320k for the rest of the season and is a UFA after the year. From all indications DP will not suit up again this season and the Isles need an NHL goalie. Denis looks like a cone in net…..if Dubbie is the alternative instead of Sanford I can live with it.

  9. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Brian, I just checked the by-laws and your right, hopefully my slip up doesn’t cost me the presidency.

  10. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

Strummer, I won’t try to usurp your power. Hopefully, nobody else will. You are definitely the president!

  11. avatar Neil says:

Could it actually be Mike Dunham?

  12. avatar isles316 says:

I think they need two capable NHL goalies just so no one else gets hurt. I mean Joey Mac has been thrown to the Wolves this year. What a joke. They should have signed or tried to sign Ty Conklin. I’m still on that kick even though it’s long gone but the Isles really messed up there.

  13. avatar Matt King Isles 13 says:

lucic is day to day so i doubt he plays tomorrow. I’ll be at the game. I would love to see nate lawson lead out the islanders for warmups. Kid is undefeated in bridgeport this season. 8-0 i think.

  14. avatar walter says:

maybe we can put a shooter tutor in there???

  15. avatar Daniel says:

Bring in Dubie, it will at least give us fans something to be happy about for a moment. And by the way, anybody else read how Tavares was leveled in the CHL prospect game? He left after the hit and did not return. Hopefully nothing serious.

  16. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Just read the report on Tavares getting hurt. Hopefully nothing serious. Interestingly the guy who hit him was Zack Kassian, who I feel is a must for Snow to get in position to draft in additon to Tavares. He is compared to Lucic. Big, can fight like crazy, hits like a machine and leads his team in scoring. Is projected to go between 12-17.

The other guy who hit Tavares pretty hard was yet another guy I want the Isles to draft. Taylor Doherty, 6’8″ d-man, who can play in all situations, hits a lot, and is a fighter. He and Tavares exchanged elbows after the hit which shows me another good sign of Tavares.

So I am hoping to read post draft articles recounting the night when the three newest Islanders beat on each other and what a bright future they and the Islanders have.

You have to believe with currently three 2nd round picks and all the veteran trade assets Snow could manuever himself in position to grab all three.

  17. avatar guerin13 says:

i agree with chris that it just doesn’t matter who the goalie is for the rest of they year. it’s really all about getting one of the top 3 picks at this point and seeing the kids progress. hope tavares is ok.

  18. avatar Darthziggy says:

    Shooter tutor, I love it.
Haven’t heard about Nate Lawson – will definitely have to do some research.

  19. I can feel it already: Tomorrow’s headline on the “site that will not be named” will say: “Isles Hard after Khabibulin and Blackhawks want Weight in exchange”

  20. avatar Bob says:

CB, I can see putting a claim in for Sanford by acquiring a goalie making some money and allow the team to make a trade and not worry about dropping below the salary cap, and have a professional goalie on the ice not a statue in net.

Very interesting stat man games lost due to injury Isles: 263 Strangers: 10 Just more food for thought…

  21. avatar mjisles says:

    i miss eric boguniecki

  22. avatar cgs878 says:

I guess a piece of plywood with a randomly-moving hole in it would be a poor substitute for a goalie in net.

  23. avatar Dally Mac says:

GO with what we have. Assure the no.2 spot in the draft. No, ifs, ands, or buts. Reap the whirlwind. Take one for the team. Can I use anymore cliches.

  24. avatar John says:

A goalie in net is worth two on the IR?

  25. avatar thepolishprince says:

Anybody have any thoughts on whether the Isles may try for a solid #1A goaltender over the summer to platoon with a (fingers crossed) healthy DP next year? I understand this summers group of UFA goalies is pretty large…

  26. avatar Johnny Islander says:

I wouldn’t call claiming a waived backup, virtually free of charge, significant or urgent.

Not claiming him though, is called “passive tanking”. Which I’m fine with.

  27. avatar brian says:

How Garth Snow can claim that Gordon has done an excellent job when the Isles are the worst team in hockey and an absolute embarrassment on the ice is beyond me. If Gordon has done a great job, then what kind of job havbe you done, Garth? But the pom pom waivers will say Garth has done an excellent job because he signed Streit. The #1 d-man on the worst defensive team in the sport. What does that tell you about Mr. Streit’s defensive game?

  28. avatar Brian From Jersey says:

We’re paying Dunham for services rendered already, so suit him up to back-up “Ricky hurt his-Danis again”

  29. avatar isles316 says:

    “passive tanking” That’s hilarious.

  30. avatar the bomber says:

wow, sounds like a lot of hitting for an all star game. cant believe these guys are lining up to take runs at the best player in their league. sounds like they need to get rid of this game if these kids are doing that to each other, and stars are getting hurt…

im just going off what you guys are saying though, i didnt see it myself. hope tavares is ok, i have my #91 jersey on order….

  31. avatar Johnny Islander says:

#27 Not defending Garth Snow here, but you are way off on Streit. The guy is a -2 on a team that has given up 46 goals more than they scored.

    In contrast… Witt is -26

  32. avatar the bomber says:

you can say he got very lucky overpaying (at the time) for streit as a forward/defenseman who was good on the power play if you like. but you really have to give streit some credit, the guy is pretty good in both ends for a guy the habs didnt trust to play defense only a year ago.

Again, i think it was mostly luck, but getting Streit was one of the best moves an Isle GM has made in years. Without him, we may have been relegated to the AHL by now….

  33. avatar TuxTax says:

Maybe Tavares is faking an injury just so he doesnt have to come here? JK…What about throwing Witter in net, this way he can get hit with pucks all game just like the system from the past two years. In all honesty, I would love to see Dubie again, he was a true underdog hero for this team. I think signing him would be good to get a few extra butts back in the stands at NVMC. The place is like listening to crickets on a cold night, few and far between.

  34. avatar cgs878 says:

OK, so let’s get Dubie back already! At least his nickname has 2 syllables and is short enough to be used with the same “chant” after a big save (D-P, Jo-ey, Du-bie). The organist won’t even have to change his style.

  35. avatar Johnny Islander says:

Fornabaio of the CT post wrote last night that Capuano hasn’t heard anything from the Isles on a possible call up. Mannino has lost 8 of his last 11 games, so it’s not like he’s exactly earning the call up. The Isles would have to sign Lawson to call him up.

I think Sanford either cleared or not at 9:00 am today, so we should know soon.

I say we should just go with an empty net and work on the power play for the rest of the year.

  36. avatar FIsles says:

Not having a reliable goalie is demoralizing for a team. Other players start to overcompensate, trying to make saves for the goalie because they don’t trust him to handle any shots. This leads to undisciplined play, the system breaks down and you lose structure with everyone constantly playing catch-up to the system and failing. The players become even more demoralized, start to doubt their teammates, their coach; trust is lost. Gordon’s system is energetic and proactive, so players drifting away from the plan and overcompansating for the goalie would result in chaos.

My point is that letting a team sink with an unreliable goalie can easily have a negative knock-on effect on the future as well. It is very hard to get out of the rut once you’re there, it becomes self-perpetuating, a culture, “epic fail” as they say on the internetz. Never let a team deteriorate. There is a difference between descending sharply and dropping like a lead balloon.

  37. avatar isles316 says:

    #36 you are right on.

It becomes that much harder for young players to develop when you give up 5 goals a night which happens a lot as it is.

The team in general might be a year behind in that regard given all the big leads and awful third periods they have had.

I know we all want that #1 pick but holding some late leads will help this team come next season.

  38. avatar Marc from Troy says:

So what time is morning skate, anyway?

  39. avatar Aim says:

Brian #27 you have to understand Go Go is Garth Snow’s college buddy. They go way back. The Islanders did not hire the best coach available they hired snowey’s buddy that will not give any resistance. Neil Smith and Ted Nolan both had opinioins and were shown the door…….JOEL QUENVILLE would not interview here saying he needed to take a year away!!!!! 2 weeks into the season he takes the Chicago job. Cant blame the worn down NVMC for that one!!! The truth is that QUALITY hockey people do not want to come here and be a puppet in this dog and pony show plain and simple. That is so obvious. Go Go works for very little money, is snoweys bud, and does not have an opinion on anything other then what he is told. PERFECT ISLANDER

  40. avatar BSTSTH18 says:

the islanders don’t need lawson… take mannino and let him sit on the bench, thats where he belongs. lawson is the only winning goal the sound tigers have and we’re actually winning :X

  41. avatar Macch says:

What happened to the Isles Prospect Updates on the website? I use to look forward to those every Tuesday

  42. avatar Ed J says:

I agree 100% with CB on this one, if Joey Mac is only going to be out for a short while ( we hope ) keep Danis & call up a Bridgeport goalie. I loved what Dubie has done for us, but if we are going to give the kids a chance to grow & learn NOW is the time & having a top 2 pick in this years draft is an added bonus.

  43. avatar Marc from Troy says:

Perhaps some of the venom some of you continue to post at every possible opportunity – regardless the actual subject of CB’s blog entries – might be a little easier to digest if you actually got your facts straight. Believe it or not, attending to that minor detail really does allow you to be taken more seriously.

Case in point, “Aim”, nice try on the whole “Snow’s college buddy” thing. Gordon, BC ’86. Snow, Maine ’93. So close, though. Not that you really care who “Snow’s college buddy” was, because the answer won’t support your little rant, but just look a little lower on the coaching directory for the name Mike Dunham.

    DUBIE AGREES TO A 1 YEAR, PRO-RATED 500K.
