WEIGHT OUT 2-4 WEEKS
And look who got a hat trick?

by Chris Botta on January 10th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

The news gets worse and worse for Islanders fans.

Per John Jeansonne of Newsday, Doug Weight (lower leg injury) is out 2-4 weeks. The Islanders did not provide Point Blank with a Weight injury update.

In other news, Nikita Filatov returned from a successful World Junior Championships for Team Russia and tonight – in his sixth NHL game for Columbus - notched his first NHL hat trick. Ken Hitchcock told us Filatov was special.

Feedback.

Maybe tonight we will get an article about how Snow should be cut slack and we should all love him, lol

  2. avatar Chris TMC says:

    Wow… that sucks about Doug.:(

As far as Nikitas hattrick goes, I honestly wish him nothing but the best.
As long as he isnt scoring on the Isles!!!

  3. avatar frank nyc says:

    cmon chris was that necessary?
    ughhhhhh
hmm way to make myself feel better:
…. ohhh if the isles had filitov they might be a better team and that could keep them from finishing dead last and drafting John Tavares. Its all i have left.

  4. avatar kevin says:

here comes every saying snow sucks…. maybe weight shot himself so he doesnt get traded

  5. avatar kevin says:

hey if shanny is going to sign with the devils, is it possible they would be looking to dump some salary? maybe trade brookbank or rupp to us so we have some toughness or size if neccasary becuase someone else is bound to get injured again and that will give them room to sign shanny to 2.5 mill for one year

  6. avatar UIF says:

Guess that solves the “making room for Nielson” problem.

  7. avatar GasMD says:

You know CB, the news today is just par for the course.

  8. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

It never ends. Rough news about Weight. Frank in NYC said it bed – at least this stuff is helping us get a shot at Tavares. It is all we have at this point…

  9. avatar Isles1972 says:

Too bad about Weight. As for Filatov, who cares. When you rebuild you have to start down the middle and on defence. With Neilsen, Bailey, and possibly Tavares, this team will get better adn Filatov with be a distant memory.

  10. avatar GasM.D. says:

Filatov will be a distant memory in 2021. Hopefully, this blog will be around so I can bitch about how Dipietro’s contract is finally over and off the books.

  11. avatar 7thWoman says:

I guess this means that Doug will be able to make a guest appearance in the NY announcer booth. sigh…

  12. avatar isles99 says:

i could post about how bad snow has done his job but you could just read the last thread if you are concerned with that and the whole fialtov issue. as far as weight goes, i mean the only saving grace is it gives us a better shot at jt but it also hurts his trade value since hes not in the lineup everyday. other teams will now begin to wonder if weight can sustain the pace if he was at before which is a legit question at this point. i hate to be so cyncial, but i agree with the post #1 about the upcoming snow article. at this point, i dont wan’t to hear anything about snow, wang, or dp. and i don’t care how committed these guys are to long island.

  13. avatar walter says:

Ping Pong Ping Pong Ping Pong

  14. avatar Isle_in_LA says:

To make it worse, I think Filatov is was playing center tonight…ouch. They were all just flukey goals though. LOL

  15. avatar TuxTax says:

Riling up the masses again CB…havent wrote much lately but I still read everyday and watch every Isles game(on DVR in fast forward sometimes) but I still love the team that desperately needs a young superstar and a face of the franchise(goal scorer not goalie, people). Also liked the Kool Aid banning, corporate lingo is my enemy, anyway Milk is better it does a body good!

  16. avatar streit 02 says:

    Filatov – Tavares – Okposo

  17. avatar VAlentino says:

    our scouting sucks ass

  18. avatar isles99 says:

in regards to post #9, the isles could have picked cody hodgson over bailey if they wanted a strong two center with character. why dont you guys get it. we could have gotten bailey if snow had wanted him that badly even if we traded down from the #9 pick. he wauld have been still there around the 14th to 16th pick. im shocked snow didnt trade down further because he could have gotten more quantity later on in the draft who certainly means a lot to him. im shocked some people still are defending snow. i would’nt be surprised come this spring bettman announes that the isles have made a trade with their 1st overall pick. he will say “the isles have traded the #1 pick, and their 6th round pick to toronto for toronto’s 1st, 3rd, kubina, and toronto’s 2nd next year”. at the sheer joy of getting such a deal, snow will gladly accept and tell us how this deal will better our defense and add to our depth of prospects.

  19. avatar streit 02 says:

old story regarding the draft, but it still makes my stomach turn when you see filatov doing things like that.

  20. avatar GasM.D. says:

Damn, 3 even strength goals with less than 10 minutes of icetime. I smell a bust!

  21. avatar Ryan Tendrup says:

I think Josh Harding just had a rough night.. He definitely should have had those last two. Pretty soft. But the 1st goal he just mad a bad decision. None the less, Filatov is a talented player.

  22. avatar isles99 says:

i just watched filatov’s 3 goals, only the first can deemed flukey because the goalie missed on the pokecheck while diving. the other ones were legit. i think its time we accept reality and realize our beloved gm blew it again.

  23. avatar Ryan Tendrup says:

Btw, I have the NHL Gamecenter where you can watch every game, and it’s absolutely AWESOME. I highly recommend it.

  24. avatar Drive45 says:

That Filatov is too small, no quickness and weak along the boards. The Islanders scouting staff. We have to be realistic, we haven’t had a GM since Bill Torrey left in 1992.

  25. avatar Hale078 says:

so every time filatov scores snow is a moron. bailey shows he belongs and will be a very good player..lets all calm down…lets also see how the extra picks pan out…you don’t judge a draft after 20 games. there is soo much negativity in this board

  26. avatar isles99 says:

    Dear Charles Wang,

I used to be a backup 3rd baseman with my high school team and I have a couple of fanatsy baseball and fantasy hockey league championships. Does that qualify me for your team’s GM openning?

  27. avatar guerin13 says:

good for filatov and the jackets but i like what i see from bailey and i believe that he will also be a great player. you have to factor in all of the other players the isles got in the draft day trades too. they’re two different players filatov is a finisher while bailey is a set up man. weight should still be healthy come the trade deadline. all this does is make us more of a lock for tavares/hedman.

  28. avatar Ray says:

Sort of off topic but Islanders prospect Travis Hamonic got a hat trick of his own tonight. He got into three fights tonight as his team, the Moose Jaw Warriors fell to the Saskatoon Blades 10-1. Gotta love that WHL!

  29. avatar UNH Steve says:

haha i like kevin’s idea. maybe weight shot himself in the leg so he couldn’t get traded. thats pretty funny stuff. in truth though this really is disappointing news. maybe doug will take 7thwoman’s advice and head back up to the announcers booth. i loved that the first time

  30. avatar rickisajoke says:

I just happened to notice that Rick has only 14 career shutouts. With the amount of games he has played, that is an awful number.

  31. avatar michael says:

greaet move by the back up goalie- er- i mean GM to trade down to take a guy who has in a word, disappointed, us. to say the least.

  32. avatar isles316 says:

guys, enough with the Bailey/Filatov debate. At draft day there was some question if Filatov wants to even stay here after his initial contract.

Time will tell on all of that. Mick Vukota had a hat trick once too by the way. Filatov is a very good prospect yes but Josh Bailey isn’t a slouch.

This season is brutal and we all want some initial reinforcement that things are going in the right direction but unfortunately that is almost impossible to do. So far Okposo,Comeau,Nielson and Bailey all look like NHL players so be thankful for that.

  33. avatar patrick says:

    Hey CB,
I like how you left that little note before the night was out that filatov came back from a strong performance at the WJC and nothced his first Hat trick. I know you believe that Bailey should have went for confindence building and to play in a competitive atmosphere, where Canada won. You were right then and thats why it seemed funny to me that you posted it. Love your site. keep it up

  34. avatar isles316 says:

The biggest thing about Dipietro is that he gives up lots of goals late in games when the team is leading by 1 goal or tied. He was brutal with that last season.

  35. avatar rickisajoke says:

Why do fans feel the need to bash Filatov because Snow was dumb enough to pass on him? He is 18 and has a hat trick in his 6th NHL game!!!!!!!! He is gonna be a big time scorer. Bailey has shown promise. However, I think every fan on here knows deep down that Filatov is the scoring threat we needed and wanted. The ways people try and bash him now are pathetic.

  36. avatar rickisajoke says:

Isles 316 – Saying Mick Vukota once had a hat trick as a way to bash Filatov is plain moronic. Saying he may not stay after his contract? Where is he going? The wonderful KHL? Why you feel the need to defend the loser Snow is beyond me. The team is a joke from the clueless owner, to the unqualified GM, to the brain-dead coach.

  37. avatar Justin says:

I think Islanders fans deserve to be negative if they choose, look at what we’ve been put through over the last 15 years. I still can’t get over that stat that no Isles draft pick has scored more than 15 goals since Ziggy. Amazing.

  38. avatar Bob says:

Filatov was the guy most of us wanted, but I’m happy with Bailey so far. I still think we really needed a pure goal scorer and not a playmaker. I guess comparing the two is still too early. That’s what some people are still saying about DP and Luongo 7 years later.

  39. avatar Strummer's Army says:

It’s fine. There were plenty of very good players taken in this past draft, Schenn, Filitov and Bailey are among them. They are all going to be excellent players. I really am in no way disapointed with have Josh Bailey.

What is way more interesting is the Doug Weight out 2-4 weeks. Is that 2-4 weeks from now or since he was out? Has he already played his last game as an Isle?

    Hillen had a fight tonight.

  40. avatar isles316 says:

I’m not bashing Filatov. He is obviously going to be good. I’m just saying that many hockey analysts said the Isles had one of the better drafts compared to all the teams. Other prospects that were drafted later were in general very highly regarded including Kirill Petrov who is still 18 and 2 years away from being here.

I’m just saying that we can’t make an educated opinion for 3 or 4 years and see where all these guys pan out. Did you see Bailey and Filatov play before the draft or any of the other draft picks?

I understand your frustration and your questioning of the franchise and Snow. It’s been long enough since we saw any results from anything they have done.

However, it’s unfair to pass judgements just months after the draft. This all takes years to unfold.

  41. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Lets start trading some vets now. I would like to def trade witt, weight, guerin and martinek..

  42. avatar chickendirt says:

Here we with the knee jerkers.

Thanks for baiting them SB. Although I have a feeling a few are Rags fans trying to fake this one out. As if anyone should envy their draft history.

The 08 Draft was not about the first round. It was about restocking the system with quality picks. Hamonic had 6 pts in two games playing on the worst team in the WHL.

Petrov is supposed to be better than Filatov.

Hodgson hasn’t stepped two minutes on NHL ice and someone is claiming Snow blew it with Bailey. Bailey is a 19 y/o playing against grown men while Hodgson is in Juniors playing against pimple faced kids.

Read the scouting reports before claiming Snow blew by picking Bailey over Hodgson. Both are basicly the same with Hodgson the slower skater. I bleive Hodgson was one of the slowest skaters in the first round.

Enough with the Hodgson stuff. It’s ridiculous.

  43. avatar kevin says:

rickisajoke..thats hilarious….chickendirt is right so no need to repeat what he said. rickisajoke if you dont care why bother going to games and coming on this sight if you are just going to bash? wang loses money so you can be a season ticket holder. i have no prob with him. snow got some really good guys in the defence depleted prospect pool. what would you do if you were garth??? other then draft filatov and have no defence prospects.. and whats your beef with gordon?

  44. avatar Nick Classic says:

Rickisajoke, you just undermined your entire point. No, you don’t have to defend every move the team makes, but you also don’t have to piss and moan about every single thing that happens in relation to the team. I take offense that you would actually compare people who try to look on the bright side, like myself, to abused women. Give me a break. The fact remains that many fans have become incredibly whiny and look for reasons to complain. Let’s not forget Mark Parrish: Snow was a moron for signing him to a minor league deal. No wait! Snow was a moron for not signing him because Parrish had a hat-trick in his first game! Since then, in 24 games, Snow’s biggest mistake during the season has 2 goals and 3 assists. Again, give it a rest.

I wouldn’t have minded Filatov, and I don’t doubt he’ll be a good player. However, when actually watching the players last year, I wasn’t sold on him, and I’m not upset to have Bailey. That doesn’t take anything away from Filatov, and it doesn’t make anyone delusional or battered to say that.

The venom you’ve spewed in your last few posts is a waste of energy. Either accept reality and try to see the big picture or keep bashing your head against the wall and talking like a fair-weather fan. Your call.

  45. avatar kevin says:

when his overspeed is used with good offensive defensman and forwards who can keep up, ( prospects ness, niemi, hillen and skinner for d and forwards okposo bailey, figrin, trivino and more) we should be set

  46. avatar Nick Classic says:

Chickendirt was dead-on…the fact remains that it hasn’t even been 7 months until the draft. It’s psychotic to claim to know the kind of careers these kids will have in the NHL from such a small sample. In the same way, shame on anybody for calling Okposo a bust at 20 years old. That’s more self-delusional than trying to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

  47. avatar Nick Classic says:

Correction: 7 months SINCE the draft. Sorry.

  48. avatar isles316 says:

This rebuild is going to be very hard for some fans to take and I understand why. Don’t bash Snow and Wang for us stinking it up right now, bash Milbury. He left us with absolutly no prospect pool and Snow is doing what he should to get us back there. It’s just going to take a while.

  49. avatar chickendirt says:

Oh, the Milbury stuff is old hat as well.

    I’m tired of that.

    This sin’t about Milbury anymore.

This is a fresh slate for this franchise. Something that’s been needed for a very long time. Milbury just doesn’t matter.

We have a clean slate here.

ANd I, for one, am extremely excited about it. This season has been one of the more exciting ones we’ve had in ages. Watching these kids play and struggle has been one hell of a page turner. A lot of em are much further ahead than the players they were to start the season.

    It’s gonna get better.

The whiners just don’t get it.

  50. avatar Akeem says:

    CB, how IRONIC.
Gimme a break everyone. Nikita Filatov scores one hat trick and thre Isles are now boneheads? One game does not a career make…Ironically, I can point to AT LEAST a dozen games like that that Dipietro has played, starting with his 50-something save performance at the Garden last season, but apparantly THOSE flashes of brilliance, as opposed to Filatov’s, aren’t enough to prove a player’s worth. Let’s see how things play out, shall we?

  51. avatar cody says:

I love how there are two types of islander fans. You either blindly agree with every move, or blindly disagree with every move. Both are just stupid, however its disgusting to see people giving up and even thinking of wanting the team to move.

  52. avatar Glenn says:

Personally, I prefered Filatov to Bailey because I think this franchise is short on FINISHERS\SCORERS, but as a NY Jets fan and a veteran of many a draft blunder, it makes no sense to look back.

Seriously, WHAT is with the INJURIES this season? I cannot recall any Isles team this decade getting wracked like this. Could any of it have to do with the system? Thanks to an old CB post, we know it ain’t the training staff’s fault. I guess when it rains, it pours, right?

  53. avatar TuxTax says:

Can I say shut up people? Because this is ri-friggin-diculous…Call the damn Wahmbulance. I could be the Isles GM because I know so much about hockey…Wah…Ricky only has 14 shutouts…Wah…Wang is a crazy owner…Wah…We should have taken Filatov…Get a grip people!

  54. avatar TuxTax says:

And by the way, Milbury is not part of the Isles org anymore, get over it, its done, he is gone.
And I still do think the refs and the league hate the franchise its really obvious.

  55. avatar kevin says:

its kinda hard to get over it. he set us back so far which is why we are where we are now… instead of having talks about how great all our players are doing with an all-star goalie and 6’9 beast and awsome offence we are sitting here complaining about the draft and our franchise goalie he left us with.

  56. avatar isles316 says:

I think everyone who seems to have hatred is basing it on half a season for the most part. Besides Ovechkin and Crosby and a handful of others, what draft picks become superstars or reach their potential as soon as they hit the ice?
Remember the joke Dustin Brown rumor and how of course we would all want him? Well he had 5 points in his first 30 games. Okposo and Bailey more than double that.

  57. avatar rob says:

i agree with all those that say its been one of the worst 15 year stretches u could have ever imagined – so anyone who complains about anything i am fine with – but if you are gunna say you are ok with the team moving – stop wasting the real fans time. how could you say that if they go to vegas u’ll be happy and thats what the center ice package is for – you completely lost all credibility with real islander fans

  58. avatar kevin says:

he lost all credibility with that name. flyers need to make space as do the devils if i think shanny is getting more then 2 mill..technically the devs have 2.1 but you understand what i am saying. will the isles trade with them or will they make a trade in general. the flyers need to since briere is coming back they will need to make a move. any ideas or rumors??

  59. avatar doc says:

Weight was hit with a slap shot by Guerin during a game. Hardly caused by “THE SYSTEM”.

    DOC

  60. avatar The Losers says:

Chickendirt, Tuxtax, Akeem, and etc. excellent points I agree 100%.

People, seriously, I can’t stress this enough, lets stop crying about who we could’ve, should’ve, would’ve but don’t have. I know the times are hard for us all but we still cry about something that happened 10 years ago? We should be crying and whining about the refs and the league! I’m just saying…

P.S. I got two words for you all… they’ll make some of you feel better…

    DETROIT LIONS.

P.P.S. If you’re rooting for this team to move to KC or LV or wherever… how do you even go about calling yourself a fan of this franchise? Take that Isles jersey off you’re disrespecting it.

  61. avatar JPinVA says:

If Filatov scored 20 by the end of hte season, Snow still did the right thing on draft day. It was not clear if he was going to be able to play in North America, and the last thing the Isles needed was another complete bust in the first round. That’s when the decision was made, and that is how it should be judged.
So, to look at the whole picture, this draft probably still rests on the shoulders of the undersized defensemen and Petrov. If they are contributing in 2011, nobody will even remember that filatov was passed up.
What’s the chances of that happening…
and who’s to say that he wouldn’t just be a russian version of tambellini playing under Gordon.

  62. avatar Shawn33 says:

Hahah did Botta ever stir the pot with that little mention.

  63. avatar Isle_in_LA says:

Word Chickendirt. It’s 1972. It’s a rough year. Team sucks, but there is hockey on Long Island. For that we have something to cheer for. There are definitely a few bright spots. Hopefully we’ll be cheering for them for quite some time. Imagine how much fun it will be to see these kids win a Stanley Cup! Let’s hope we are all witnessing the new Nystrom’s and Trottier’s. Hey, did anyone know the future of those kids in the 70′s?

  64. avatar Bossy22 says:

In response to post 18…Bailey wouldn’t of been available after 11th pick. Last summer I had the opportunity to golf with Kevin Devine (Head Buffalo Scout) and he said they wanted Bailey ard were keeping their fingers crossed that he would drop 2 more spots. Buffalo scouts were very high on Bailey. Kevin thought that Snow had a great draft and told me that many other teams felt the same. Let’s put last years draft to bed….Bailey is our man…let’s show some support.

  65. avatar hextalll72 says:

hey chis, any thoughts of putting your 1050 show with don into a podcast? the timing of the show is hard to listen but podcasts are great for during work.. much appreciated

  66. avatar Lou Z says:

Great draft by us. I’m glad we got him. Wait…we didnt draft Filatov…oh thats right I forgot that we traded down…wonderful

  67. avatar ClueLessGarth says:

LETS PUT THIS ALL IN PERSPECTIVE GUYS …….

    LUKE SCHENN=Dion Phaneuf
    NIKITA FILITOV=PAVEL BURE (W/O INJURIES)
    JOSH BAILEY=CRAIG JANNEY

Ok enough said !!!! 3 years from Bailey will be traded and be a 40 point man in yhe NHL & FILITOV Will be scoring 40-50 goals a year doing highlight film stuff daily….Luke Schenn in 3 years will be a future Captain being molded like Scott Stevens&Dion Phaneuf—But we DRAFTED BAILEY ???? WTF…WHEN DOES THIS NIGHTMARE END……

PLEASE GOD SAVES US ISLANDER FANS…PLEASE IM PLEADING TO U OUR LORD&SAVIOR PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON US THIS HAS TO STOP

  68. avatar Dally Mac says:

If there is a reason, that Bailey never meets expectations, it will be because one (and most important) the Islanders rushed him along. He should have went to the WJC and back to Junior. This hanging around a losing atmosphere is doing no good for anyone. And two, too much pressure is placed on him by others hoping he achieves more than fellow draftees 5-10. You don’t rush prospects. He would have won himself a gold medal and maybe even a Memorial cup and played 9 NHL games. What a season for a young man. The Word Juniors transforms kids into different players, I’ve seen it since 1986, when us Canadians started to really focus on this event. Filatov is riding that wave right now. When his lazy tendencies start to appear, we might be happy we didn’t.

  69. avatar Dally Mac says:

And I wouldn’t say Bailey is going to be Craig Janney, I’d say more of an Adam Oates. 70-80 assists a year and 10-20 goals. If we haven’t ruined him.

  70. avatar Dally Mac says:

You’re right rickisajoke Craig Janney wasn’t a bad player at all. But I’d say Oates had a better career. Bailey will never score 30 goals, but he may have a shot at 80 assists.

  71. avatar Tom says:

CB, unfortunately Filatov scoring a hat trick is not news. From the get go he was THE player for Islanders to pick. Garth has a plan, part of that plan is losing as many games as humanly possible.

Serious question: What will happen first…Islanders next get a winning record under Garth “I’ll be here a long, long time” Snow or the Isles get a new arena?

    It’s a trick question…neither happens.

  72. avatar rickisajoke says:

Daily Mac, you are totally right. Oates was a much better player than Janney. Oates is a HOF player. Janney was a very good player. Bailey would be lucky to fall into the very good player category.

  73. avatar Tom says:

rickyisajoke— I totally get what your saying, but evry islander fans is at a “different point” in their fandom. I’m probably closer to your point, but I don’t think any fan is stupid for supporting the Isles. Personally, in the end it’s all going to be a moot point. The Islanders are not getting a new arena. It’s not going to happen. Charlie won’t build “just an arena” his prize is the surrounding land & his plan has been soundly rejected. Game. Over…unfortunately.

  74. avatar Joe G says:

Filatov, Tavares, Parisi…that would be some line.

  75. avatar AZS says:

    CB,

What’s up with the guidelines you posted? It seems like ceratin negative people seem to be dominating this blog …it’s the best blog out there and would hate to see it turn into what Logan’s blog has become…

  76. avatar isles99 says:

im apalled some of you think filatov wasn’t going to come here next year….what the hell were you paying attention to? how many times did filatov said my contract with the CSKA is over and i want to play in North America next year? Sheesh, do your homework. And to the guy who is still defending not even picking cody hodgson, please show me the article where it clearly states he wasn’t a good skater because i can show you numeorus “expert rankings” where they had hodgson higher. hell. hodgson had more point in the OHL in te same amount og games bailey played there. having said all of this, some of you are dead on. some fans always find a way to defend garth snow. please, accept reality. there is a reason why there is all the negative attention associated with our beloved islanders. the funniest thing is, if someone gets especially ticked off, some of you label him as a ranger fan or whatever. you know thats not always the case. it just maybe that some of those supposed rangers fans have accepted reality sooner than you will.

  77. avatar AZS says:

Then why read/post on a Islander related blog? Sounds to me that you’ve all been good fans who are just sooooo fed up – and constantly remind the rest of us about that fact – but have finally had it with this team.

I’m not gonna tell you that you’re “not a fan” or anything like that, but it just doesn’t make sense to me that you’d hate so many things this team has done for the past 15 years yet still waste so much of your time posting on fan blogs?

If everytime I drove to work I hit the same pothole and got a flat I’d probably starting taking a different route to work …if every season you leave feeling unhappy – then why for 15 years or so – would you continue to support this team? or post on blogs?

It’s getting old fellas (and or ladies) …post one negative post and leave it for the day …we get it already – you’re not happy …enough …

  78. avatar AZS says:

See, I’m not shocked a simple minded person such as yourself would miss the point of my last post …

The point isn’t whether or not you have the right to post here, it’s WHY would you want to? I mean your “name” shows that you think the man who’ll be playing goal here for over a decade is a “joke” …why invest such time and energy in something you don’t believe in? Isn’t being a fan of a team supposed to be fun? Doesn’t seem like you’re having fun, so why even be a part of it?

Anyways, best of luck to you and people like you …I won’t be responding to you any further as per the guidelines …

  79. avatar isles316 says:

Rickisajoke and fans as such are what brings this team down. Negative and short sided.
Bashing Garth Snow because he was promoted to GM uniqely. Yea it was a joke but how do you know Snow is a joke or that he failed? I mean you really need to give it more than half a season.

  80. avatar mike 8 says:

it’s that the Islanders think they always have to go against conventional wisdom (draft the best player available, hire competent people) and they always end up looking like complete fools because there always wrong. any other pro team hire a washed up backup to be GM??? im just waiting for the Mets to fire Minaya and hire Ramon Castro as GM.

  81. avatar GasM.D. says:

AZS, first off, im 18 yrs old so the 15 yr ordeal you are talking about doesn’t apply to me. secondly, i like reading and posting on this site cause i find the content interesting and i sincerely want my team to do well. thirdly, i give this team credit when it does the right things. for example: they hired laviolette and streit and weight, these moves were great. then there are times when you have to hold peple accountable for the mistakes they have made and i certainly do that as well. i dont complain about everything but the way things are done in this organization pisses the sh*t out of me. you know, if things were all rosy and well in this world, we’d all get along perfectly and there would be nothing to debate about. cb even said this himself somewhere in one of his entries. iunderstand your argument that certain people complain all the time ans there is some level of truth in that but you also have to make sure this organization is held accountable for some the retarted things it has done both recently and in the past.again, theres a reason why ppl. in the hockey world laugh at us and belittle us.

All the islander fans who say they will move to KC or Vegas, Hamilton (insert any other city) does not understand what is going on here. This franchise is not moving. Ask yourself this: The LH project is now in its 8th yr? Wang started talking about this when he bought the team in 2000. We are going on a decade now. So if the franchise was in such dire straits and a new building with luxury boxes were waiting with Wang’s name on it, why hasnt he moved the team yet? Why bother with this LH nonsense? He could have moved the team at any point. Nassau county knows this. They know the team is not going anywhere which is why they are taking their time with the LH project. This is a cat and mouse game between Wang and the county. Why would wang continue to hold onto something that loses him money? Out of the goodness of his heart and generosity to LI? I think not. Here is why I believe the Islanders will never move whether wang owns or sells to someone else:

    1. Cablevision. The isles have the best deal in the NHL.

    2. NY market. Say what you want but this is still NY. All islander fans are fans of the other NY teams. Yanks, mets, jets, Giants, Knicks, Nets and we carry those attitudes towards the islanders. This is not some outpost in the middle of nowhere and that NY vibe has an allure that owners love. When the islanders won they were splattered all over the back pages and when they won cups they were on the front and back.

    3. Islander country is alive and well. I believe Logan had on his blog that PB had over 600 posts in one day!! so much for dormant franchise and being irrelevant. I can picture the islander marketing dept doing back flips. Oh and by the way they watch that stuff.

So there are still strong foundations right here on LI and this team is going nowhere. Some portion of the LH deal will get done in time. I dont think Wang will get the whole enchalada, probably he will get the NVMC redone and a new convention center and a downsized shopping plaza. Which is all I care about. This team needs to start winning and hoepfully a new foundation is being poured for the future. Wang and Snow need to get this right. Time will tell. A player like Tavares would do wonders for us. Lets go Islanders.

  89. avatar pained says:

Let’s be frank, Bailey has not impressed this year. Granted, bulking up will help his cause and keep him on his skates rather than on his behind. So there’s hope there. But I dont see any smart, instinctive plays out of him either. And that’s what scares me.

  90. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

CB – Who would you think will be the 1st islander traded this year>

  91. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

I think it’s way to early to grumble about the 08 draft. Admittedly as I’ve posted on Logie’s blog I was livid when the Isles traded down … my target wasn’t Fili .. it was Wilson … I can’t imagine Filatov playing against the Flyers, Bruins etc. … that being said … I can’t see Ness playing against them either… then I remind myself … these kids are ONLY 18/19 … most of these kids were scouted when they were in the later part of being 17 years old / early 18 years old … they ALL still have a long way to go.

Filatov may become the next Kovalev … May being the key word … Someone said Bailey reminds them of Adam Oates … I feel exactly the same way … but Bailey still has a way to go … the KEY to this past draft is “Player Development” … some teams are more successful in the draft because they know how to cultivate players … the problem with the Isles organization the past 15 years (Yes .. this goes back to Milbury’s legacy) … is that the Isles have lacked the proper player development programs … as far as I know it wasn’t until ’06(?) that the Isles finally committed to a real development system with Trottier heading it up.

Keep in mind that draft rankings are just a snap shot of an 18 year old’s potential at a specific time … What happens after that is purely up to nature, the player and the team.

  92. avatar andy says:

the day the Islanders move will be the day i declare hockey to be dead. I’ll never watch another NHL game again.

And who cares about Filatov? We had a chance, Snow didn’t want it. We got a kid who’s playing like an NHLer- that’s rare for someone in their 1st year! How’s Stamkos doing, by the way??? 4-10-14, eh? Some ‘hype’ and he was a healthy scratch not too long ago.

Let’s focus on OUR kids. Snow drafted some good picks in 08 and its the 09 draft is going to be OUR time. All is well, Isles fans. All is well.

    Chris,

Please read through these posts and see how many people have taken your post guidelines and threw them out the window,

We have people posting here 10-15x, saying the Isles organization are like wife-beaters….it’s nonsense and a waste of time to read.

I love your blog and I love to read adult, intelligent comments and try my best to respond accordingly.

1/2 of the comments posted in the past 12 hours make me feel like I’m in middle school fighting with other children who didn’t like the teams I liked….the most ridiculous part is we’re all supposed to be Isles fans on here. I feel like some of these posters have a Ranger tattoo underneath their Isles jersey.

I beg everyone. If you have nothing good or positive to say about this rebuild, just stop wasting our time and say nothing at all.

Post about our players. If you want to post about how Tambellini sucks, great…..but who gives a flying @#$% on what Filatov does. He’s not here, why bother. I’ve posted it before, I’ll post it again. Be more upset over the 7-8 players we drafted in 1999 instead of Zetterberg. Teams don’t win championships because of who they drafted 5th or 9th in the 1st Round of a draft. Teams win championships by drafting diamonds in the rough in the later rounds. Red Wings are the ultimate model. Lidstrom (3rd), Datsyuk (6th) and Zetterberg (7th). Let’s complain about the players we drafted ahead of those three instead of complaining about not drafting Filatov after he’s played in 6 NHL games.

I’m done with my rant….Sorry CB.

  94. avatar Nick Classic says:

19 Isles is exactly right, no need to expand on what he said about player development.

Rickisajoke…it’s clear reason doesn’t apply to you, so I won’t even try. Keep claiming we’re like battered women and see how many people respect you for it.

I was LIVID at the draft, myself. I wanted them to draft Colin Wilson as badly as many people here wanted to draft Filatov. However, unlike some of you, I have the capacity to let it go. It’s like what John Wayne said about JFK so many years ago: “I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my President, and I hope he does a good job.” Same thing…I didn’t want him on draft day, but he’s on my team and I hope he has a great career. That’s all.

I also agree with Andy – if the Islanders move the NHL is dead to me. Any fan of this team who could still follow them after moving is far more battered than I.

  95. avatar isles99 says:

cb,since there are a lot dissenting opinions on this board, can you please research why the isles did not like filatov, hodgson, or colin wilson. the reason for filatov might be that they wanted more picks but they could have gotten more picks if they had selected hodgson or wilson as well. the isles were in position to take these guys but they chose not to. its clear to me the isles did not take into considertation filatov’s size all that much because they drafted aaron ness who is even smaller although he was drafted later on. im just curious to know why snow was in love with bailey and not the other prospects.

Thanks.

Any btw, all I did was mention that Filatov had a hat trick – something I’m sure most of you saw on the World Wide Web. Okay, except for the WJC part – I guess playing against teenagers didn’t mess up Nik’s game! – I didn’t editorialize about the draft decision. I’ve already written about that…CB

RE: Weight … Early last week … the NHL.com site had a video montage of Weight during what looked like an Islander practice that included some interesting sound bites from Weight.

It looked like it might of been produced in the early part of the year … I could be wrong ….

What I keyed on was when Weight said … (paraphrasing) “Flash (Gordon) calls it ‘Over Speed’ … I call it groin strain” … Weight said something to that effect… that might say something when a well conditioned veteran athlete is “feeling it”.

I know CB said it has nothing to do with the training staff … perhaps … but something is causing all these “Lower Body” injuries. It’s hard to trust what comes from corporate when they’ve deceived us regarding injuries time and again ….

and on the feel good front … maybe this is something we can hold onto during these hard times … a link from NHL.com … http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=403201

  104. avatar Chris TMC says:

And isles99, do you know what “communist” even means? It gets thrown around here a lot and its just so dopey. There is no reason to throw stuff like this around on here. There are NO guidelines here against dissenting opinions!!! If you or anyone else has that much of a need to go on and on and ON about how you feel about whatever topic you want, this just isnt the place for it. You can join a message board or start your own blog for that. This is Chris Bottas blog- not yours mine or anyone elses. The idea that this blog doesnt belong to ALL of us demonstrates how this is NOT “communism” at work. Ironically, what you would prefer- this notion of a blog without a higher power, a blog that belongs to all equally, IS communism.

  105. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

CB- .. concerning player development … since I brought up the fact that Bryan Trottier is the director of player development … What exactly is his role in PD?

Can he coach drafted players NOT currently playing in the Isles’ system? Like college or juniors? Do the Isles have any control in how a player not under their tutorage is coached / developed?

It seems since Snow and Okposo felt he’d develop better with the club than the Golden Gophers that the Isles have little control over player development unless they are in the system. If that is the case … then how does that bode for the development of players like Aaron Ness?

  106. avatar GasM.D. says:

Lupica today wrote, “There could be better action in the first hour of “24″ tonight than there is in the entire Islanders’ season”. He is not wrong, but I believe there is better action in this blog than in the entire Islanders’ season.

Everyone stop with Mike Lupica. He’s the same guy who proclaimed the Mets “Kings of New York” in Summer of ’07…a few months before the Yanks made the playoffs and the Mets collapsed. So he’s not exactly the kinda writer you want to set your watch to. He probably couldn’t name five non-goalies\veterans on the team except MAYBE Okposo.

in response to the whole arguments going on here, im 14 so when i became a fan this team was under the bus.it was during the season when we played the maple leafs in the playoffs. memorable playoffs. grew up watching steve webb crack some skulls and being part of the chants for him. same goes for cairns and his fighting. watching him take on the even bigger peter worrel. learning about yashins huge contract and what milbury has done as i watched chara level an islander. so i have a good understanding on where this org is and i think this rebuild is going well and garth is going to get us out of this. it all starts with the draft obviously and i think he did a hell of a job. but personally, i am tired of all the snow haters saying how much snow sucks and he is going to ruin this team and wang is terrible. its getting rediculous

  111. avatar djd says:

hey cb – right on about Filatov coming back from the WJC and playing confident…would have loved to have seen Bailey come out of the WJC with some of it as well…oh well. I haven’t watched every game but i am impressed with his game sense…its a good place to start. Not sure if you ever answered the question regarding a defense coach in the Isles. I have played hockey since i was six and every team from Mites through college I was on had a D coach. With a “youth movement” it only seems more comical that the Isles don’t have a full time coach. Gervais and Campoli haven’t gotten any better as far as I can tell.

  112. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

djd … the Isles don’t play defense … thus no D coach needed. LOL!

In all seriousness … the lack of a defense coach is a glaring deficiency .. as evidenced by the game by game results.

I assist coach a mites team … and there are 3 of us coaches on the bench … The head coach … a defense coach that manages the defenseman’s shifts and tells them what they do right and wrong … an offensive coach (me) … I pretty much do for the forwards what the defense coach does for the defensemen … the head coach keeps it all together … and controls more what happens with lines and what strategies to use … some of you guys would be very surprised what 7 & 8 year olds can retain and put it to practice during a game. Heck .. even the officials help teach the kids during a game … it’s refreshing.

You can bet your bottom dollar that my hand is full of dry erase ink after a game … we need to see that on the Isles’ bench for their defenders too.

I really do not have the patience to wait for all of the picks we received for trading down. in the wjc filatov definately has the talent and swagger of a great player. i am seeing flashes of alexander ovechkin. especially his shot. we needed a center , right? filatov scored 3 goals in under 10 min last night at center. i am sick. bad news on weight but his his days are numbered. love him but his value is to great ti pass up. at this point we need more than john tavereas to save our franchise. to many mistakes on drafting year after year.

  114. avatar chickendirt says:

We got six picks in this last draft that were in the ISS top thirty. That means with a thirty team league, according to the ISS, five picks other than Bailey were rated as first rounders. Five of em dropped in the draft and we swooped em up.

Think Snow was a fool for passing up Filatov?

You’re basicly talkng about passing up one guy so you can have five guys with a very good shot at making it in this league.

Snow did an AWESOME JOB at least years draft.

  115. avatar kevin says:

hey cb, not sure what you are going to write about today but here is a suggestion: maybe write about what the isles will target in the second round and beyond. i think we know whats going to happen in the first but we have 3 second rounders and could get more at the deadline

No, this GM put together a team that has not played even ONE game together this season because of injuries. And this GM drafted kids who are still KIDS and developing. Get some perspective on this, it will help. Far too many fans want an instant oatmeal solition to things and it just doesnt work like that.

It’s not good, no, but in Year One of the Rebuilding process this record is fine. No one is expecting anything from this team this year. With our talent pool and injuries this season, I don’t even got to say it.

I wasn’t around for the Dynasty days, but I know that even Arbour had a crappy record his first year with the Isles. I’m not saying Gordon is Arbour… I’m just saying

We haven’t heard a word from our GM or our Owner in quite a while. This has been such a crazy year, not just because of the rebuilding but also because of the injuries and the comical way they’ve been handling public relations. (Spill in aisle 7, need a clean up).
Anyway, so far I’m still here, still planning on being here for the long haul. Will try to keep focusing on the good things like development and lines clicking. But I really want to hear from Garth and Charles soon. The silence is starting to get to me.

Look Bailey has been good, you can’t anaylze every single thing because Filitov had one good game. I am sure he’ll be a good pro just like Bailey and Stamkos and Bognosian and Wilson etc. I don’t see to many bust in the top tier of that draft. I am certain that Filitov is not skating with a player like Jon Sim either so let’s keep things in perspective.

  127. avatar Matt says:

You then have to ask yourself why is he skating with Jon Sim? Why? Because our coach is shot, thats why. Petrov was the #2 European skater behind Filatov according to ISS chickendirt. I love how most on this site try to take the positive out of this its quite admirable. Good for Filatov. I had a feeling we were going to get our faces rubbed in the dirt for that one and go figure the cynic was right. Maybe one day we will have a owner or GM that makes a standard sensible decision. Its funny how again everyone on here was saying not to give up Doug Weight for a lowly second rounder but Garth Snow was a genius for giving up Filatov, Schenn, Hogdson, for 2 second rounders. I don’t get it. Sorry for the long post CB but this stuff drives me batty!

  128. avatar Mike says:

    Bailey 30 gms = 1 goal
    Filatov 3 gms = 4 goals

  129. avatar randy boyd says:

OK, C.B., I’ll take the bait. Bailey will turn out to be for Snow what Rick DiPietro was for Milbury. Biggest overthinking mistake which marks decline of GM career.

Speaking of Milbury, I watched that gasbag make two consecutive remarks on HNIC last night challenged by none of the canadian hockey gurus.

First, in response to Al Straachan’s ridiculous suggestion that the Pens consider trading Malkin, Milbury shakes his head and lectures the audience about why you can’t just trade young talent, that you can’t just keep changing the plan. And who says he didn’t learn anything in NY besides improper use of footwear?

Even better, not a minute later, the question was posed as to whether the addition of Sundin to the Vancouver locker room might have a negative effect and cause them to lose. Won’t happen, said the astute former Isles GM, because, are you ready for this….”Luongo won’t allow them to lose too many games, he’s just too good” Thanks, Mike, for contradicting most of what you did to us in the space of two minutes of air time. And no one called him on it.

Can’t wait to hear Snow on HNIC in 2011 talking about how crazy it would be to trade a #5 pick down twice to pick up later round picks.

Blow it all up, Wanger, and get a real GM and a real NHL coach so we don’t have to keep lamenting how crappy Isles management is for the next 15 years. It’s not too late!!!

  130. avatar o-town isles fan says:

Idiodic ANALysis, extrapolating entire careers over one hat-trick. After three years, when presumably Petrov (and Ness, or whomever Garth got for the trade-down) is here, THEN you may compare. To do so before both sides of the equation are comparable, is just pain stupid.

  131. avatar Peter DeBenedetto says:

The friggin Arizona Cardinals are in the NFC Championship…..anything can happen…we’ll be alright….I just hope we’ll be alright on the Island, not in KC.

Did anyone notice that 6th round Islander draft pick Justin DiBenedetto got a hat trick?

Do you know that he is now tied for the lead in Goals scored with Taylor Hall and ahead of John Tavares? He is tied for 2nd in scoring with Tavares as well.

No one gives Garth props for this do they? Nooooooooooooo!!! We are so worried about Tavares when we have a guy in the system right now with Justin DiBenedetto scoring just as much as Tavares is.

Keep it up Justin. Come next year we will have two of the top three scorers from the OHL in the Islanders organization.

  133. avatar Bob Bassen says:

I think Bailey has looked fine…no worries with me. None.Garth Snow? Mark Streit is the signing of the year. Period. We might want to draft a goalie this year at some point. Hard to say…In any case, pretty content with Mac this year considering the injuries and youth movement etc.
    Go Islanders!

Just a follow up to my previous comment; #3
I was very upset about Filitov and on draft day last year i was foaming at the mouth.
But i have seen Josh Bailey now and i like what he brings to the table. He is not as talented as Filitov but i believe he brings a lot to the table. He is a talented playmaker. Filitov will probably score many goals, Josh Bailey will make sure everyone else is scoring many goals. The old negative/positive.
