LIVE BLOG: BILL GUERIN TRADE IN PLACE
12:25 pm: The latest on the two-month transaction

by admin on February 28th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

12:25 pm – The Islanders have begun practice at Iceworks, and Bill Guerin is nowhere in sight.

More denials from Montreal, New Jersey and Boston. Carolina too, but that never made much sense to me. Remember: Cup contender, Eastern team.

Pittsburgh? Philadelphia? Washington? (A text of a minute ago says the Caps folks are mum at their practice at the Verizon Center).

Or maybe the original deal is dead. And if it’s dead, Billy stays off the ice at practice and has still played his last game as an Islander. Although Guerin doesn’t say much on the record, Greg Logan’s story today on the partially-fractured relationship between Scott Gordon and some of his veterans means one thing.

On the matter of Guerin returning to the Islanders, that ship has sailed.

*

11:53 am – Bill Guerin is at Iceworks (not practicing), but I am not. The Islanders are scheduled to practice there in about a half-hour, but the wireless is not working at the team’s Syosset practice facility.

Funny thing about the crapped-out wireless. It’s been on and off for me and Logie since the Islanders hit the skids in early December. You know anything about that, Scott? (These are just jokes, Coach. It’s Islanders Country Held Hostage, Day 2).

Billy’s walking around, smiling, not saying anything. I’m still at home at the laptop – discs herniating, one at a time. You know the minute I get in the car and make the 30-minute drive to the Land Without Wireless, the trade news will break while I’m on the Southern State.

For a giggle while you wait this out, check out some of the proposed Guerin deals in Comments.

In the last hour alone, I’ve received two calls telling me the deal is not with Montreal. I appreciated the calls. However, this is now at the point where even if Billy Guerin texted me himself with the identity of his new team, I’m not sure I’d believe him.

*

10:10 am: Although you’ll probably stay with this story til the very end, it would be so tempting for me to assist in dragging you along. But we’ve now gotten to the part where I can advise that if you want to go to church, go for a jog, grab some pancakes at the diner or hang out with your families (nooooooo!), it’s fairly safe to say you have a few hours. This is based on a text from a friend I trust big-time:

This could take all day.

So what we could be looking at is a rare assemblage of reporters at an Islanders practice (on a Sunday!) – not there to watch forechecking but in wait for Guerin news. And there’s a great chance the practice will end without anything coming of it.

The holdup, of course, will lead to some speculation that this is a bigger deal (yes, going against what I wrote all of two hours ago). This will lead to speculation that the Islanders and their trade partner (or both) have acquired players they want signed beyond this season. This will lead to wild guesswork. Maybe Billy is simply exercising his right to take his time to green-light the deal. Maybe he’s the one looking for a contract extension.

We’ll stand by our prediction that the trade is for a pick and maybe a prospect. But it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t share a follow-up text from Our Guy:

Something is holding it up.

*

8:15 am, Sunday, March 1 - Now we can say this trade has taken two months to complete.

Good morning. A thorough, but blurry check of the information superhighway and series of text messages to informants has uncovered nothing but more speculation. Washington joins Montreal and New Jersey as possible destinations for Bill Guerin, but who knows? Nobody.

Hey, how about this scenario? How about the deal craters and Guerin remains an Islander for another day? One thing is 100% certain: even if it did – we’ve all seen crazier things in Islanders Country – Bill has played his last game as an Islander.

The emails and Comments have begun about Logie’s major story on Scott Gordon’s relationship with his players. I just added the following Comment to the more than 500 so far:

I’ll get to the Gordon-veterans issue with a relatively brief post when this Guerin thing is over. Unless a story is cheesy or (in my view) improperly reported, it’s not my place to get into the work of fellow writers covering the Islanders. But I will have some basic comments much later in the day, or perhaps not till Monday if the Guerin Watch becomes an all-dayer. For now, the focus of the blog and this thread will be on Guerin. Discuss Greg’s story on Islandermania.

I’m also keeping an eye on potential other Islander deals.

A reminder/recommendation: yes, this Guerin mystery has become a bit of a phenomenon. (Friday set a new record for Visits and Hits, Saturday doubled it). Since it’s just hockey and show business, not real life – except for the Guerin family – it’s been a lot of fun.

But as the hours pile up, it would be a mistake for anyone to delude themselves into thinking this is a blockbuster deal or a difference-maker for the Islanders. We’ve had a lot of fun here, but none of it should disguise the probability that this trade is likely Billy for a high-round draft pick plus (maybe) a decent prospect.

*

1:50 am – Hockey Night in Canada has signed off, so we shall too. We’ve searched and searched, but don’t have solid enough information to report.

Our final trade prediction of the night: TSN will break the news first on Sunday. But we will try our best. Good night…CB

*

12:30 am – One of the wild and wacky subplots to this whole adventure is how other, possibly-innocent GMs have been dragged into it. Hockey Night in Canada, with the gritty-gutty Pierre Lebrun doing the reporting, has zeroed in on the Washington Capitals by process of elimination. How? By calling every GM potentially in the mix and hearing them deny it.

But GMs lie sometimes. Pierre undoubtedly knows this, which is why HNIC has not formally reported the trade.

Since it’s so late at night, I’ll throw in my two cents/grasp at straws. Utilizing my experience from my old job, I ask myself what team could so successfully keep this a secret for so long? I think of the top executives at each team, how they run their business. And I keep coming back to one man.

Lou Lamoriello. Only Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey Devils could keep this under wraps for so long. That’s because Lou Lamoriello is the New Jersey Devils. He doesn’t have to run the deal by accountants or PR people or owners or friends of owners.

Now to be fair, Lou has supposedly told a major mainstream media member that he’s not involved.

I’m just saying that from my experience and knowledge, the Devils are the only franchise leak-proof enough to pull it off. If there’s another team that can, they’re proving it as Saturday night turns to Sunday morning.

Throwing out the PR side, if I had to take a hockey guess? The Montreal Canadiens.

*

11:25 pm – Point Blank offers sincere respect to the Islanders, the team they’ve traded Bill Guerin to, and Billy and his team, too, for keeping this deal off TSN and Hockey Night in Canada for four hours and counting. At this rate, we may actually get to the end of Minnesota at Edmonton without knowing. Maybe.

Although I’m still here, Garth Snow has left the Coliseum. Bill Guerin left a long time ago. The Islanders practice tomorrow. You’ll know the deal by the end of practice, and probably sooner.

If someone not with a major broadcast partner or publication is claiming to know the deal right now, they are full of it. They may guess it correctly, but they do not know. “I’ve heard St. Louis,” “I’ve heard Rangers,” “It’s going to be Montreal.” Okay. Sure. Whatever gets you through the night.

Here’s the tipping point to look out for. Once the Islanders and their trade partner conduct their conference call with NHL hockey operations to finalize the parameters of the deal, the word will get out. It almost always does.

Good night, I think.

*

9:30 pm – In addition to all other stumbling blocks – for example, a player traded to the NYI could be playing right now – the deal is pending Bill Guerin’s approval. I’m told his “official” approval may not come until Sunday morning.

Here is Darren Dreger’s story on the deal. We have some conflicting information, but let’s face it – Darren’s, uh, slightly more connected than me.

Now that Sean Bergenheim and the Islanders have beaten Buffalo, 2-0, time to go downstairs and get no information.

*

9:02 pm – Here’s the latest on what we know so far, as we wait to break this baby – or gladly watch as someone else breaks it for you:

  • The deal is done “in principle.”

  • Both the Islanders and Guerin are said to be “very pleased” with the trade.

  • An expert we count on for his great eye for this stuff says the deal is not to New Jersey or Boston. Montreal and Washington seem to lead the pack, but that could be simply a) process of elimination and b) because the Islanders had two scouts at their game against each other this afternoon. (Take this bullet with the least grain of salt, folks).

  • The Islanders also had a pair of scouts when New Jersey hosted Florida. Don’t rule out the Panthers, who got creamed twice this week. (Although I don’t know how you scout a second round pick!) Nevermind. Doesn’t make sense that Billy would approve a deal to South Florida.

  • At least three teams seriously joined the hunt for Guerin since we broke the news on Thursday night that the captain was willing to waive his no-move clause.

  • Since Guerin’s no-move gave him all the cards, his preference of the three teams was likely met. Guerin was hopeful of a Stanley Cup-contending team in the East.

At minimum, figure on the Islanders receiving a second round pick. At minimum. For a 38-year old player that had all the leverage – and there were no talks of a contract extension – that’s not bad. And it could be more.

Stay tuned.

*

8:20 pm - The Islanders have a deal in principle that will send Bill Guerin “to an Eastern team” and will be finalized by Sunday, sources tell Point Blank. All indications are that Guerin will waive his no-move clause and agree to the trade, according to the source. As we posted at the start of tonight’s game, interest in Islanders veterans from several teams has intensified over the last few days – with Guerin at the top of the list. Figure on the key aspect of the return for Guerin being an early-round draft pick.

The odds this gets to midnight tonight without an American or Canadian media outlet having all the details? Not so good.

*

7:32 pm - Bill Guerin is not playing tonight against the Buffalo Sabres, but he is healthy. After their captain took the warmup, the Islanders took Guerin off the ice and are playing short one skater. Word is the team could have an announcement after the game or on Sunday. Keep in mind: with his no-move clause, Guerin has to approve a deal. This could be complicated.

  1. avatar Mike from Queens says:

I find it weird that it hasn’t gotten out. Teams usually can’t keep lids on this kind of thing.

CB, is it possible you know but have been told to wait until an official announcement?

  2. avatar NickyL says:

I hope its for picks. The next few hours and days will be interesting.

  3. avatar TIM says:

    Any thoughts CB?

  4. avatar MT says:

They’re going to make us wait that long! Unfair! Lol

  5. avatar christian says:

ill miss guerin he was a good player but lets hope for somthing good inreturn

  6. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

We’ll see what we get for a return… should be very interesting

  7. avatar TuxTax says:

I hope its for a 6′ 2″ goal scorer with great hands…hahahaha…more like a 5′ 8″ slowfooted overpaid loser…oh wait we already had Comrie

  8. avatar George says:

he’s gone. hopefully we get 2rd.
pluse 2rd for witt and weight. thats all i expect. i liked them all but…

  9. avatar DeadoftheDawn says:

Might be time for a NEW JERSEY…

  10. avatar TuxTax says:

Wait a minute who is wearing the C and the A’s for the rest of the season? There isnt one remaining from the original 4 right?

  11. avatar frank nyc says:

Maybe we trade with st. louis they have one of the best farm systems in the league. Maybe a b level prospect and 3rd or 4th rounder. Or as we saw with the campy trade we could potentially trade 2 players in a deal for something better.

  12. avatar Son of Scissons says:

I am going to guess Florida.

  13. avatar ed says:

Can’t believe the Islanders did not have an extra forward in case Guerin or anyone else is traded. That is really bad planning

  14. avatar Chickendirt says:

    He hasn’t been traded.

  15. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Maybe Garth got blown away by a deal proposal during warmups and didn’t have time to call someone up. If the deal isn’t official I wonder why they aren’t letting him play. Must be such a good deal they don’t want him to get hurt to mess it up!

  16. avatar Cain says:

We already have their 2nd in 2009 – that note is bull.

  17. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Oh its on wikipedia… must be official!!! just playin

  18. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

I’m trying to think if Boston has any other 2nd rounders…
Can’t think of any off the top of my head.

  19. avatar Chickendirt says:

Boston doesn’t have 2nd round pick. We already have it.

  20. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

chickendirt is right. They don’t have any others

  21. avatar Swan says:

Definitely not Martin. He is the Devils best Dman.

  22. avatar TIM says:

As far as we all know Billy G was healthy,so for him to be pulled from the line-up he would either have to be traded or something personal has happened to him doesn’t make sense except a trade

  23. avatar jon says:

Guerin will fetch a pick…and MAYBE a prospect. The Devils wouldn’t be close to being that stupid.

  24. avatar streit 02 says:

I understand the value of picks, but id rather the isles take a look at some prospects rather than picks. Draft picks in these kind of deals most likely wont effect the Isles til 4 years later. We already have a bunch of young guys in tehir early 20′s, y dont we look at some more guys in that age range and let them all grow together. A couple more guys in this range and 2 or 3 FA aquisitions and we can be a competetive team that will only get better.

  25. avatar Chickendirt says:

I’m curious as to where Garth Snow is at right now.

  26. avatar admin says:

As busy as I am, if anyone wants to waste my or my readers’ time with garbage, both the post and the poster are coming down for good. Respectfully, CB

  27. avatar islesfan999 says:

Ya I would love for ppl to stop posting bs. Lets all be real and appreciate what Cb does for us. Lets look forward till wednesday we will prob see lots of trades.

  28. avatar chris schneck says:

i wouldnt be surprised if san jose picked up his services again

  29. avatar Outside says:

andy strickland said he got a text from guerin said he will “know” in the morning

  30. avatar Chris A says:

Let’s relax and wait should have full details by the end of the night so no need to rush to conclusions.

  31. avatar Glenn says:

Anybody wanna venture any guesses as to dark horse destinations? I’m gonna throw the Rangers and Canadiens out there.

  32. avatar MilburyRuinedMyLife says:

Andy Strickland is writing that Guerin just texted him saying “he should know in the morning.” Strickland’s pretty credible and has a relationship with Guerin from his time in St Louis, so I trust this is accurate.

  33. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

    message received loud and clear.

  34. avatar DingoAteYoBaby says:

Sorry CB, I didn’t realize what bi was told was a waste or garbage. I guess He was jerking my chain. Sorry I pissed you off bor whatever.

  35. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

Glenn: I’m guessing Boston. Not just cause of the bogus wiki, but just have a hunch.
Maybe the Caps, would be my other guess. Just my 2 cents tho.

  36. avatar 303Joe says:

Re post #28 I don’t think Bill would go to San Jose. He’s has thre NTC and will lift for a trade of his approval. He’s gonna stay local near his family where they can get to him or he can get to them. Figure like CB said the other day NJD, Pitt, Philly, Wash., Boston, Buff, Mtl. He’s not going all the way to the West coast where he won’t see his family till the end of the playoffs.

  37. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    Boston for sure…

  38. avatar Glenn says:

…I like how the Isles website doesn’t have any likenesses of Guerin up right now.

  39. avatar Outside says:

jaffe said team will make announcment tomorrow

  40. avatar Chris Wassel says:

Announcement is coming tomorrow. Great break Chris as always. I did a head count after pre-game skate and figured something was up.

  41. avatar streit 02 says:

Anyone else not mind seeing bergenheim playin on a line with okposo? puck persuit would be ridiculous

  42. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

    @outside,
Must we wait that long? :(

  43. avatar Pete says:

Watching the game, per Billy Jaffe: “Getting texts from around the league, potential trade…Guerin is pondering yes/no re: location, and will be imminent by morning time.” paraphrased, but that’s the jist.

  44. avatar Chickendirt says:

    Awwwww.

That’s so sad. I think Guerin and his family really like living on Long Island. There is definitly a deal in place and he wants to talk it over with his family.

THis is a guy that doesn’t sound like he was ever looking forward to leaving here. Maybe Snow brings him back over the summer.

  45. avatar Pete says:

Unrelated to the trade: but how ridiculous is this Bergenheim-Bailey-Okposo line?

Imagine if Bergie kept this up for all 82 games in 2010?

  46. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

    MacDonald looks pretty good imo

  47. avatar Greg says:

Strickland says on his blog that it is to an Eastern team not the Devils or Bruins. Better not be the Rangers for Garth’s sake. Pittsburgh is also said to be looking to move Stahl — can’t imagine that.

  48. avatar Priest says:

Hopefully he brings back a good return. I imagine we’ll know before the morning, but until I see/hear something from a reputable place, I’m going to assume everything is from Eklund (ie. it is completely made up)

  49. avatar Peter Puck says:

Well on another site theres a comment its may be to a team that is currently on the ice. Well if you forget about the Rags Carolina is beating Atlanta in the 2nd so maybe its to Atlanta for their 1st round pick?

  50. avatar admin says:

    story updated at 8:20…CB

  51. avatar Outside says:

strickalnd: Deal is pending… Will be decided by the receiving (Eastern Conference Team) soon.

    Not New Jersey or Boston.

i also wonder if that team is playing tonight too and they dont wanna finale it til their game is over.. maybea player in the deal is playing?

  52. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

    thanks for the update CB

  53. avatar 7th Woman says:

This has to be so hard on his family. I don’t envy the wife and children of a hockey player.

  54. avatar Bloodyskull says:

what ever we get for Billy is more than what we have now. Honestly his effort has been sub-par of late. maybe we trade him and that SJ first rounder and move up in the draft some how

  55. avatar streit 02 says:

If its not jersey or boston i wouldnt mind him going to philly w/ either upshall, lupul or hartnell in mind. id take upshall, then hartnell, lupul 3rd. Im gonna be disappointed if its for a pick. We have enough this year lets try to get some young guys either in the nhl or on the verge.

  56. avatar Matthew Boily says:

Anyone think that hit looked a little bit like an elbow up high on martinek… Good to see Calli challenge Mair….Even if it was a penalty

  57. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

If they don’t get a first rounder out of this… I would be diappointed.

    Or a top notch prospect.

  58. avatar Chickendirt says:

Sounds to me that this is a done deal and Guerin wants the courtesy to tell his family first.

That’s a class move by the Islanders organization.

  59. avatar guerin13 says:

    my guess is florida.

  60. avatar streit 02 says:

Sounds like its something that Snow wanted to jump on right away and not give the other gm the whole night to dwell on it. Im not going to get my hopes up though.

  61. avatar eye on the island says:

I think this is the best possible situation:

lets take a conditional third w/ the potential to become a second based on the teams playoff run as well as a tambellini like prospect from another team, u know someone that snow and his staff identify that could benefit from a change in scenery/playing in our system

  62. avatar loran says:

Err eye on the island, you really think that we want another tambellini? This version is bad enough.

    2nd rounder at worst please.

  63. avatar dhasy22 from virginia beach says:

    too little eye

  64. avatar Ted says:

possible Guerin was pulled b/c he will be traded to the Sabres? Vanek is injured and they need scoring.

  65. avatar Bloodyskull says:

if the Sabes need scoring Ted, why would they trade for Guerin?

  66. avatar eye on the island says:

63- if thats too little, on which end? the pick or the prospect, i think if we are going to be moving these guys we do need some actual bodies back in return, not just picks

and 62- i dont want another undersized scorer but there has to be other youngsters teams have soured on, such as tambellini with us, that we should take a flier on

  67. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I’m thinking he was traded to Washington, Pit or Phi. I think Boston would have interest but not the assets.

Thanks so much for all you did Bill Guerin! Standing ovation to you for your service.

I hate everything about Radek Martinek’s game. What an idiot. First time in his life he wants to act like a tough guy with the Isles having a one goal lead and playing short handed. IDIOT move.

I like the Isles standing up and yapping to the Sabres but the sad fact is if the Sabres choose to break bad tonight it is gonna turn ugly for the Isles real fast.

  68. avatar Peter Puck says:

There is a lot that is odd. presumably Billy gave them a list of teams he would waive the NTC for so unless it is something totally out of left field that is so good Snow could not pass on. Besides which Billy has been through this so many times a 5 minute phone call to the old lady is all it would need,
You wonder if there is a prospect somewhere in Europe where its 3 AM who os now an Islander?

  69. avatar isles72 says:

that would be an interesting twist Ted (64)

  70. avatar Scott, East Meadow Long Island says:

It has to be a decent return that the isles are going to get..considering snow jumped on it right before a game and caused the team to play a man down..

I hope we get something like Upshall and a 2nd Round Pick.. for Guerin

  71. avatar Ted says:

Bloodyskull, point taken on Guerin, but he is low risk with possibility of high reward, a veteran player with scoring potential-he could have a resurgence like Weight was having. Guerin won’t cost much compared to other guys on the trade market.

  72. avatar loran says:

    From Guerin’s wiki page:
” On February 28, 2009, Guerin was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Clay Buchholz.”

    ROFL.

@Eye, seriously, I’d like us to have our chance to make a pick at a prospect rather than take a prospect who has already disappointed his current team and is stuck in the AHL.

  73. avatar TuxTax says:

Okie for Capi-tan! This is a youth movement ladies and gentlemen!

  74. avatar Bloodyskull says:

Agreed Ted, I just would give tat much for Guerin if I were a GM in the league. SJ found that out last year but I guess that is why I am watching the games at home and not a GM

  75. avatar frank nyc says:

I can’t stand not knowing, this is as exciting as it gets this season. I hope their is a prospect involved.

  76. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

    Shaking my head……….lol.

Why not wait for the announcement….geez.

  77. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

I’ll wait for the official announcement … no point on speculating at this point.

  78. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

    GMTA Jimmy Sparx

  79. avatar eye on the island says:

    @72
I see your point, but with 5 already in the first 2 rounds, i think there comes a point where enough is enough

There has to be a player getting 4th line minutes who might flourish with more minutes and our system- im not saying taking a dump player but i would say there was a time last year someone like tambs still had some value and i dont think it would be unwise to try and see if a younger player who could step into third or second line minutes next year is available

and this is in addition to a conditional draft pick, not a one for one swap

  80. avatar George says:

    the current conversation….
Billy: Honey can i go play in Boston?
Wife: will you be home for dinner?
Billy: no, but i’ll win the cup!
    Wife: ok, bring home milk.

  81. avatar Neil says:

    AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Tension breaker. Had to be done.

  82. avatar Priest says:

Peter Puck: I doubt they would worry too much about announcing it because of a prospect over in Europe. You hear stories all the time of guys waking up to find themselves traded or flipping on the radio and hearing their name. Not saying you are wrong, just that I’d be surprised. I think it is more likely that he has been traded for someone who is currently on the ice (either in the NHL or AHL). Either way, what we know is that it’ll be announced tomorrow, but I suspect that TSN or Sportsnet, etc will have the details before SportsCentre is done tonight.

  83. avatar loran says:

@Eye, uh….nah, there’s never a point where enough is enough. And if there is, i’ll take a 2010 first rounder. But seriously, with our track record, ill take as many picks as possible.

  84. avatar Robert says:

early first rounder??!! are you kidding me… just an hour ago Botta said don’t expect a first rounder for Guerin, now it might be an early first… That would be awesome…. Tavares and Schroeder!!

  85. avatar loran says:

Robert, he said “Early ROunder” not early first rounder.

    IE 1st 2nd or 3rd rounder.

  86. avatar Jim says:

HNIC had nothing about the Guerin trade, other than what CB has already reported.

  87. avatar Kyle says:

    From Guerin’s wikipedia page

February 29, 2009 – Traded to Kansas City Coyotes for John Tavares

  88. avatar eye on the island says:

sorry to change the subject, but the islanders need to lose this game, tampa bay has crept within 10 points of us

  89. avatar Bruce says:

Sources say Guerin has been told he likely will not learn which team has expressed interest until the morning, as the Islanders work on finalizing a deal.

    thats from tsn.ca

so Guerin himself doesnt know where hes going yet? thats hard to believe, he has to consent to a deal

  90. avatar Pete says:

It’s brutal watching Stan grill Okposo and Lacroix as to whether Guerin’s been traded or not.

I know that Stan’s doing his job and everyone wants to know, but what kind of answers is Stan going to seriously expect from his Guerin’s teammates and his coaches?

If he really wants answers, go to the team mgmt, not to the guys in the locker room.

  91. avatar streit 02 says:

anyone know the guidlines of y it wouldnt be announced? I mean is it being held up only b/c guerin must waive his ntc? Perhaps a team playing, montreal, carolina, rangers?

  92. avatar Kristie says:

Ugh, I don’t wanna wait. Guess I will have to though.

  93. avatar streit 02 says:

or the simple fact that guerin can not get hurt if hes not playing

  94. avatar Joao says:

CB, do you know how this trade would affect the isles situation with the salary cap. I know they’re likely very close to the floor as is. Does this mean they would likely have to receive a high salary player in return?

  95. avatar Jim says:

@ streit 02 – There are number of reasons why it wouldn’t be announced. There may not be a firm trade in place. Guerin may have asked for a night to talk it over with his family or sleep on it. They need to have a conference call with the league before it’s official. A player involved may be playing, etc.

  96. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

props to PointBlank on TSN…. lol

  97. avatar Bob says:

Probably another 2nd round pick. With all these 2nd round picks (last year also), at least one of them has to work out.

  98. avatar Chris says:

You heard it here first folks…. Guerin 2nd rounder to Caps for Semin

  99. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

On a side note I just noticed the sponsors on the right side of the page – two things:
1- The Isles jersey with Tavares’s name and number BETTER NOT be a jinx, haha.
    2- Videokeman Music Code: Brilliant!

I think tonight has been fairly entertaining aside from the Guerin situation. I’d like to see more from Baily though. It seems that he’s hit a wall.

  100. avatar Daryl C says:

Given standings, cap space, team needs, and the list of teams already eliminated in blogosphere I think it’s gotta be Pittsburgh.

  101. avatar Michael says:

haha how can dean mccammond not love it here! he goes from a 4th line player in Ottawa gettin little icetime….to the Islanders where he is on the PP unit…

  102. avatar eye on the island says:

@100, your dead on aboout bailey

i just hope that he does not lose confidence for next year

  103. avatar Chickendirt says:

I would pretty much break this down to Washington. I don’t think Montreal was on Guerin’s list.

Also given the fact that Snow has done business with the Caps in the past.

  104. avatar loran says:

Am i the only one who finds the Mcdonald-Danis success annoying? It’s just making us look worse and worse for the Dipi deal…and i like dp. Sigh.

Ah well, lets finish off the buffaslugs please.

  105. avatar admin says:

    updated at 9:02 pm…CB

  106. avatar Peter Puck says:

If Billy is “very happy” got to be the Habs

  107. avatar Justin says:

I just read that Guerin was having problems with Gordon. This is the first I’ve heard of that. Do any of these players like (more importantly respect) this coach?

  108. avatar Mike says:

I agree with Daryl that Pittsburgh makes the most sense.

  109. avatar loran says:

At least a 2nd rounder? Me likes. GOOD JOB SNOW!

  110. avatar Mike from Queens says:

    Loran, 105:

I’m not displeased with it. McDonald and Danis have done well, but they’ve also had some really, really ugly games. DP is better than both of them, and with him locked up until judgment day, it’s a solid building block for the future. Danis, I think is cementing his status as our 09-10 backup.

  111. avatar rob says:

    everybody hates gordon.

guerin and campoli . who else

  112. avatar Bruce says:

justin (108) I was thinking the same thing, Ive never heard about Guerin and Gordon not getting along

  113. avatar loran says:

Thrashers score, now down 3-2 to the canes.

  114. avatar Isles78 says:

I have to go with Montreal, they have scouted us heavily for the past while. Plus Gainey is familiar with him from his time in Dallas.

  115. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

I’d like a little bit more than just a second rounder. A second rounder and a nice prospect? I’ll take it, but just a second wouldn’t be current market value. I’d hope that Snow is playing these teams off each other to maximize the return

  116. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Whats up with Gordon? Now logan is saying Guerin didn’t like him either……

  117. avatar Daryl C says:

Gainey was on HNIC and he made it sound like they were going with what they currently have.

Washington makes some sense if they’re looking to add some grit and playoff experience, but I wouldn’t think they’d be looking for goals.

  118. avatar Justin says:

The article says veteran players, but that could just be because their ice time has been reduced significantly as the season went on. Witt also spoke out about how Gordon wouldn’t change his system even when it wasn’t working.

  119. avatar MT says:

Good luck Billy. I know I’ll be rooting for you

  120. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

The whole Gordon thing is a bit disturbing. If there is any sort of truth to it it might be hard to lure a big name (Komi) here this summer. Surprise surprise… UGH!

  121. avatar Chris Wassel says:

Montreal seems to have the inside track..at least so far because well honestly every Washington blogger I have talked to has said…not here! But we’ll see….maybe it is not Montreal either.

  122. avatar loran says:

    THRASHERS TIE IT! 6:03 left, 3-3 Canes-Thrashers

  123. avatar isles99 says:

im going to go out on a limb and say that guerin will be traded to pittsburgh. the pens make a ton of sense since they desperately need secondarey scoring and pitt isnt too far from ny. i hope snow added another piece to make this a 1st rounder but that is wishful thinking.

  124. avatar BrianAlbany says:

ATLANTA TIES IT!! Woohooo 3-3… 5 min left

  125. avatar Mark says:

Rob #112, I’d probably put money on Witt being in that category as well.

  126. avatar Isles78 says:

Ask the guys in TBay that won a cup with Torts if they like him lol. They hate the guy but they won a cup. Liking your coach isn’t always going to happen, I’m really not concerned by these reports from Logan. I like watching Gordon coaching and taking the time with his young players after shifts to explain things.

  127. avatar Twisted Wrister says:

    Hey CB,

Tsn.ca is quoting you as breaking the story! :D

  128. avatar Blackwasser says:

Possibly Laraque and a 2nd round? Maybe another enforcer for the youngsters?

  129. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

129, I’d take that. GL is under contract for another 2 years at $1.5mil per year.

  130. avatar Steve S says:

How about Guerin and one of our 2nd-rounders to Montreal for Higgins?

  131. avatar loran says:

    BERGIE ON FIRE!

  132. avatar Scott, East Meadow Long Island says:

Bergie is having another great game!

  133. avatar Peter Puck says:

Again Bergenheim This kid will make us forget Tavares yet

  134. avatar Smokey says:

As if you couldn’t have a better banner season for the kids, Bergenheim decides to have a coming out party

  135. avatar Chris A says:

Billy who? Great game by Bergie

  136. avatar SW says:

I agree with Isles78. Gordon is doing what he was brought here to do, develop the youngsters. Ofcourse the vets on the team aren’t going to be happy with the growing pains the team is going through because they want to win now.
Problems with the vets and coach seem to be just about the only insiderish info Logan can come up with and it is getting kinda old now.

  137. avatar loran says:

    THRASHESR SCORE! 4-3 Thrashers!

  138. avatar Blackwasser says:

I think Higgins would be a good fit here. Based on his stats this year he has either been injured or not happy.

  139. avatar jonw says:

well the Guerin deal will bring the payroll to about or just under 40 mil which is close to the floor so i’d expect to see someone coming back

  140. avatar frank nyc says:

WoW bergie is having an unbelievably good game. He is starting to look like maybe he is becoming a developed player and a bonfide goal scorer. Danis another shutuout!

  141. avatar kjh0517 says:

PB is now famous! You cant shut this site down anytime soon CB, even with the few stupid comments you get

  142. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Another shutout for Danis. Is his stock rising at all CB?

  143. avatar Math says:

If it’s agains’t a second rounder count out Montreal, they don’t have one in the upcoming draft!

  144. avatar eye on the island says:

thrashers come back from down 2 and win!!!!

  145. avatar Jeff Kuntz says:

Allright, TSN deserved to be called out for not crediting a previous Botta scoop — so now they deserve recognition for Dreger doing the right thing.

    Congrats to CB.

  146. avatar Richie66 says:

Phew!! Atlanta came back to score and won the game. Interesting how were getting better (and younger) by subtraction. Buffalo didnt seem to have their game on, but really enjoyed watching bergie play.

  147. avatar C.J. says:

Thank you Thrashers!!! Way to go TO and Ott… OT is always a nice thing.

Too bad the Avs couldn’t take out the Raggies.

If we’re gonna win, it’s always great to see the Thrash win as well.

  148. avatar cmimbri says:

montreal for dandenault….possibly……but i think he might be going to carolina

  149. avatar guerin13 says:

word on imania is that it’s the devils

  150. avatar Jim says:

How about Guerin to Washington for a 2nd rounder and Oskar Osala?

  151. avatar Joey303 says:

Keep in mind fellow Pointblankers……..Atl had 6 of last 8 at home. Worst record looks almost a lock. Atl should win at least 6/7 of 18. Makes the Isles have to win 11/12 of 19. dont think so with a 7 game road trip comin

  152. avatar Ed J says:

So long Bill, thx for showing these kids some class…

    Great game boys!!!!!

  153. Great Job by Snow for getting something out of nothing (I don’t care what we pick up ).

And big thanks to Billy G for being a class act from beginning to end.

  154. avatar Joey303 says:

152- meant to say ATL HAS 6 of last 8 at home. They play pretty well at Phillips arena

  155. avatar Bobby says:

    Higgins and a pick?

  156. avatar cmimbri says:

if its montreal it has to be with dandenault is has asked for a trade so expect gainey to honer the request

  157. avatar Chickendirt says:

    CB;

Is it possible that Weight might be going with Guerin?

I would think that any team enquiring about one is gonna also enquire about the other.

  158. avatar jisles says:

I beleive Guering is going to the penguins. I really can see him playing along side Crosby and giving that team the scoring touch back from its wingers. If it is the pens Guerin in the short term is going to put up some big time nubmers get that team into the playoffs and make some noise. Guerin for Staal? I know the pens have really been down on staal for a awhile now. Billy thanks for all your efforts. In a bad situation you were the model of professionalism. Good luck.

  159. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Thank you Bill Guerin! Hope your drinking from the CUP soon enough!

Great game by Bergy and Danis.

  160. avatar SW says:

I’m hoping it is the Pens. Staal would be sweet. I think he’d be awesome if given the chance to be first line center. It would be more like Guerin + SJ’s first and maybe a 2nd round pick….no way the pens trade him straight up.

  161. avatar The Kid 77 says:

Was at the game tonight–sat in 327
I was walking out with my friend and Garth snow was in the hall walking downstairs. (The stairs with the glass around it–outside sections 327/325) I said whats up with Guering. He said I don’t know smiling and kept walking. Then I shouted as he was going through the doors “No Hedman–Tavares and thats it.” He gave me a thumbs up.

  162. avatar miket says:

is it possible they sent him to the sabres? i dont think he would agree to that.

  163. avatar Joe says:

Good game tonight, good luck to Billy ,he deserves a spot on the cup.

  164. avatar Dorfer says:

If Guerin actually did have problems with Gordon, then that’s just another reason to trade him. I’m tired of the inmates running the asylum in sports.

I’m going to get killed for this comparison, so take it with a grain of salt, but Gordon reminds me a bit of Herb Brooks. He’s no-nonsense, he’s a bit quirky and hard to read, he loves speed and hard forechecking, and he’s not there to make friends with his players. I like him.

  165. avatar Vukota says:

Vets are mad at Gordon and the kids are thriving, don’t change a damn thing. BTW-CB. Rotoworld had your site as the source as well. Don’t go “Big Time” on us.

  166. avatar jisles says:

The isles really need to purge the vets off this team just for mercys sake. Guering is gone, witt, weight, Martinek, hilbert need to go also. These guys need to go to teams that are win now teams. Playoff teams. It is doing these guys a disservice not to trade them off. these guys deserve to be playing elsewhere as they just dont fit to what the islanders are doing. My opinion is they are all traded by Wed.

  167. avatar cmimbri says:

i dont by guerin not not getting along.with gordon same story every season first laviolette then nolan now gordon there is no way we have insurection with every coach …if thats the case then this franchise has some huge issues

  168. avatar The Kid 77 says:

Someone just said possibly for Higgins–is higgins even on the block?????

  169. avatar Bobby says:

Guerin has to approve the trade. I doubt he would approve it if he was going to a bubble playoff team. This would have to be a team with a realistic chance of winning a cup. Carolina is definately out.

  170. avatar Aim says:

well i guess what i heard in Canada was true almost everyone wants out and almost everyone hates Gordon and his system. Should be an awesome 09-10 season too I guess

  171. avatar ken says:

    Word is its Washington

  172. avatar Chickendirt says:

Could be the locker room needs a Coughlin/Dallas Green like attitude adjustment.

Could also be that the emporor has no clothes. Mainly stemming from some bad game decisions (not sending Fritz after Mottau strikes me as one) that created some clashes.

Would be great if CB could dig something up.

  173. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Where ever he goes that guy is a class act, He was a true captain from the first moment he was given the C. He will be missed

  174. avatar Bobby says:

Higgins is on the block, and the move makes sense from a developmental prospective, as well as marketing wise. Long Island kid playing for the Isles, that’s a no brainer in terms of PR.

  175. avatar cmimbri says:

pr… the puerto ricans have nothing to do with it

  176. avatar jisles says:

This whole story about vets not liking Gordon and not getting ice time. well it was obvious halfway through the season what was going on and really at the beginning of the year that this team was getting younger. The vets should have been smart enough to see the writing on the wall that as the season progressed the kids were going to get alot of ice time and when the injuries hit and the losing started it made it that much easier to do. Just think the Thanksgiving eve game against the pens the islanders were I believe 10-11 looking to hit .500. they lost the game and have won only 9 games since. But that is the price of rebuilding. Just thought I would throw that out there.

  177. avatar The Kid 77 says:

Ken-172–That is from Eklund because some moron keeps posting it.

Bobby–175—I would be happy if it is higging.

Guerin and a 3 for Higgins and a 2–sign me up

  178. avatar Lil C says:

    Was: Karl Alzner

NYI: Bill Guerin, 2nd Rd Pick

  179. avatar ken says:

    whos Eklund?

  180. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    Lil C

    That would be sweet…

  181. avatar isles316 says:

Besides this trade stuff which is obvious, the team tonight played one of their best all around games all season.

give each player credit, they all did well.

I’m sticking to my Montreal prediction.

  182. avatar IWH says:

Lil C: I would do that in a heartbeat

  183. avatar The Kid 77 says:

Alzner–why would they give up their best defense prospect? Why wouldn’t the isles demand a pick–doesn’t sound right to me

  184. avatar Aim says:

it is many players that have a serious problem with Mr. Gordon young and vets. There are some real bad problems down in the room of the NYI. There is also very little in the way of respect for this coach from the players!

  185. avatar Vukota says:

Since Gordon started giving the kids the majority of the ice time they are playing close to 500 hockey. The kids are starting to blossom under Gordon. That’s why he was hired. Who cares what some vets on the down side of their career think. Maybe Guerin thinks he deserved more ice time when anybody watching new he was getting too much already. These older players don’t want to face the reality that they are losing a step and their skills are deterorating and instead blame the coach.

  186. avatar The Kid 77 says:

    Aim–source?

  187. avatar Vukota says:

Aim- All the kids are playing great under gordon. Why would they have a problem? What you say you are hearing doesn’t make sense.

  188. avatar Aim says:

ya gotta just trust me for what it is worth if you dont I understand but I told you guys a week ago what Newsday is putting out tomorrow

  189. avatar Aim says:

and it is not ALL of the kids dont read into that

  190. avatar The BAWSE says:

You’re dreaming if you think the Caps would trade Alzner for an old rusted winger like Guerin. I’m not saying he’s not going to the Caps, but that’s way over valuing him, as is the suggestion of a 2nd and Osala. McPhee is a shrewd GM, and Snow is not one to fleece another GM. I’m interested to see how this develops.

  191. avatar dose says:

this is where the trade stuff gets silly.
    when you know, tell us.

  192. avatar Vukota says:

Give us names if you are so connected, otherwise it’s meaningless.

  193. avatar Bobby says:

wwww.insidepittsburghsports.com is reporting the Islanders had scouts at the Penguins – Hawks game yesterday.

  194. avatar Mario says:

Just back from the SoundTigers game. Bridge won 3-2 over penguins. First thing I do is check here and all this news hits me. Awesome game by Kohn and Lee on defense. Keep the good news coming CB!!!

  195. avatar togo says:

anyone else wanna see guerin with ovechkin? i want to see AO carry the cup for a while now, makes me wanan root for the caps with guerin on his side.

  196. avatar Mouthwash says:

Guerin was in the owner’s box with Snow for most of the game. I wish I had binoculars at the games so I can read their lips….

But People were talking at the game and I kept hearing Montreal.

  197. avatar Vukota says:

Godard and a 1st for Guerin and Bostons 2nd would do it for me.

  198. avatar Aim says:

Well Vukota just consider it meaningless I guess but look at my comments from about last monday or so and you will see that what I said is going in Newsday tomorrow. I dont claim to be that “other” blogger guy or anything dumb like that but there are some things I do know just take it for what it is worth but watch it play out….was Campoli a veteran?? I think he was supposed to be a young upcoming homegrown defenseman….that had a problem with this coach and his system…

  199. avatar Pritchett54 says:

I am getting tired of people complaining that Gordon might not have a good relationship with the players. If I were a veteran like guerin, witt, weight, whoever else, i wouldnt be thrilled to be getting less icetime so that a bunch of 19-22 year olds who have never proved anything can get some experience.

We brought in Gordon to start a youth movement and to teach our young players. Since the start of the season we have learned that Okposo is a star in the making, bailey seems like he will have a long career, Neilsen looks like a pretty good player, Bergy has really started to come on and all of a sudden this guy Danis, looks like he could be something. Things are on the up with our Isles. We add tavares or hedman this offseason plus a late 1st rounder and possibly FOUR second rounders(if we get one for guerin) and our franchise has jumpstarted its rebuilding program.

  200. avatar islesfaninNC says:

aim what is going in Newsday tomorrow..can u please tell me?

  201. avatar jisles says:

I agree with Vukota post #186. It doesnt make sense the young players have a problem with Gordon. I can see the vets having issues but not the kids. The young players are happy to be in the nhl and working on getting their careers started and becoming full time nhl players and they dont have that kind of maturity or experience to even think about having a problem with gordon. Even if they do they would not state it publicly. I have a problem with Logan even writing anything like this. The bottom line is it doesnt matter because these vets are gone and sounds like Logan is trying to break some story to create controversy to get people to read in the newsday since there is nothing else noteworthy to write about the islanders. Makes no sense.

  202. avatar Mike says:

Lot’s of conjecture. Did an anonymous poster to a hockey blog, Aim, just say “ya gotta just trust me” after making an awfully suspect claim with absolutely no evidence to back it up? Pretty funny.

The fact of the matter is, not everyone gets a long. Do you all get along with your managers at work? This is a business, sometimes people get a long great sometimes they don’t but you still can work together effectively.

Garth seems to believe in Gordon’s system [all that matters right now] and if after re-tooling the team with young run and gun type players Gordon still cannot win…Garth will have to re-evaluate.

Guerin is a class act so hopefully he goes somewhere with a shot at the cup (except the devils).

  203. avatar Aim says:

i am at about my limit on posts just check logans blog

  204. avatar Coach B says:

Funny, many of the young players on Boston were coached by Gordon in Providence. He must be doing something right developing players.

  205. avatar cmimbri says:

logan is talking some smack in that birdcage liner newsday that there is a revolution of sort with coach gordon he eludes to some of the vets not liking the coach….logasn is digging up drama for tommorrows read on the crapper

  206. avatar Vukota says:

Do you see the trend? All the players that are having shatty years it looks like are the ones who complained. Campoli should look in the mirror instead of lucking for excuses. His D was so bad that unless he was going to put up Bobby Orr numbers it wouldn’t be worth having him on the ice.

  207. avatar beatlebailey says:

hope it is higgins! c’mon Garth!!

  208. avatar Michael says:

Hey Aim, why don’t you tell me the lottery numbers, since you can see into the future?

And I think that the trade is Guerin to Washington for their 1st or 2nd and a B level prospect. Thats why its happening now and not Wednesday. Snow can’t pass up on it

  209. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

Was Bill Guerin the guy on the grassy knoll?

  210. avatar isles316 says:

What veterans might have a problem with Gordon? Comrie? well he is gone. Witt? It seems like Gordon listend to Witt and adjusted his style which to me seems like the coach is in the right.

Sim? He did get healthy scratched a lot so I would be pissed too.

Vukota is right. There are not impact players on this team that don’t like Gordon. I don’t care if Guerin doesn;t like him, the guy hasn’t played hard in about 3 months.

  211. avatar cmimbri says:

post limit…wtf….first obama gets elected then we go socialist now limits on a hockey post

  212. avatar islesfaninNC says:

    # 209…aim is at his limit….lol

  213. avatar Coach B says:

Watched a lot of Ottawa-Toronto tonight and Campoli was shakey defensively to be kind.

  214. avatar isles316 says:

Coach B, a lot of the current Bruins have raved about Gordon. Also raving about Gordon are guys that used to coach agaisnt him. The caps and panthers coach couldnt say enough good things about him.

Im tired of players being babies and dictating who the coach is and all that. I’m glad for once our GM is sticking up for the coach.

Remember last time? Milbury fired Laviollete because everyone was a baby. Look where that got us.

  215. avatar cmimbri says:

maybe he ment his mom wants him to have a cookie a glass of milk and go to bed

  216. avatar Michael says:

Ha ha @ #212, so true

  217. avatar rob says:

if it is Montreal , is there any chance Higgins in involved? Anyone with info?

  218. avatar Scott W says:

The Coburn Zhitnik trade should show us all to Never Say Never. Desperate GMs do strange things at the deadline. Forecast for Sunday…Lots of Snow!!

  219. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

There is going to be growing pains for everybody… including the Coach.

Not all players like their Coach… too bad.

That is part of the modern day athlete… they think they run the team.

Gordon is doing a good job… every player needs to be accountable for their own play… not blame the Coach.

  220. avatar Michael says:

I doubt that the relationship between Gerin and Flash was as rocky as Logan is making it seem. Newsday is trying to sell papers, they’re going to exaggerate a little bit.

  221. avatar Michael says:

Personally, I’m hoping we get either a 1st round pick, Karl Alzner, or Jordan Staal. The Pens are down on him and they already have Malkin and Crosby. I wouldn’t rule that out.

  222. avatar Coach B says:

isles316-215-The veterens who were here the last few years liked that Ted Nolan favored them. that what it seems to me anyway.

  223. avatar jisles says:

cmimbri post 206. Exactly. Logan is dredgin up some drama and its overblown. My last word on Campoli. first he played under sterling. then he cant make the team the first year with Nolan and that had to do with his attitude. Now Gordon. Well I can see one coach you dont like but 3? Sounds like Campoli has the issues and btw chris you stunk the joint up. You were classified as an offensive dman now that’s a stretch. Byebye. Bottom line is Gordon is here for the long haul. So the players better get used to it or they will be gone also.

  224. avatar CanadaSam says:

    ************BREAKING NEWS***************
JUST REPORTED ON THE 590 IN TORONTO , BILL GUERIN HAS APPROVED A DEAL TO THE NY RANGERS…..

NY RANGERS WILL AQUIRE GUERIN FOR A PLAYER ON THERE ROSTER

  225. avatar Smith77 says:

A lot of speculation over the trade. It looks like a lot of people will be following this tonight. I don’t expect anything till tomorrow so I’ll sleep on it.

Goring mentioned on hockey night live that he expects the Isles to get nothing more than a 3rd round pick for Guerin.

Atlanta did win today(as some of above posters have mentioned) but they are now tied with Tampa Bay with 52 points. For those following the watch, we’ll now have to worry about Tampa Bay and Atlanta. We are currently 7 points behind each of those teams.

  226. avatar Vukota says:

    Prucha and a pick?

  227. avatar the bomber says:

the islanders arent getting a first rounder for bill guerin folks, wake up. he has fifteen goals and is a free agent. if someone like higgins comes back rejoice, otherwise its shaping up that we will be on the clock first and THE ENTIRE SECOND ROUND.

  228. avatar islesfaninNC says:

PLEASE SAY ITS NOT THE RANGERS!

  229. avatar Michael says:

Maybe for Prucha and a 1st? Slats is stupid like that, I would take it!

  230. avatar Aim says:

yeah I ummm never claimed to be lookin into the future… whatever…the word is out there take my comments for what they are worth but lets sit back and see what things are by the summer I said to CB a week ago that multiple players want out of here in the worst way multiple does not mean ALL. The players mostly vets and some younger players want out cause of flash not a major news story there it is actually very obvious but hey its just a comment on a blog

  231. avatar Eric says:

If that is true, I want Prucha and a pick like Vukota said. That would be fantastic. And since they will get eliminated in the first rd if they DO make it–its going to be a decent pick. Let’s see how this all turns out. Guerin was a class act and he and Weight did what we asked of them–mentor the youngsters. We DO need vets so I hope they can keep Weight.

  232. avatar cmimbri says:

did you just go over your limit on posts aim…. or do you have roll over

  233. avatar Michael says:

Aim, you’re post limit! What happened?! *sarcasm*

  234. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

Isles … Two shutouts since that young promising shut down defenseman Campoli was traded … go figure. :)

  235. avatar islesfaninNC says:

    LMAO…..CMI….AIM suspended for 5 games!

  236. avatar jisles says:

Rangers? I dont think Guerin fits there. The rangers have major cap issues. They would be taking on salary. My Guess is this. They are dumping a vet player with alot of salary Naslund?, Redden? Zherdev? on the islanders so they can make room for Kovalchuk. Sounds logical. What does everyone else think?

  237. avatar christian says:

I did go onto newsday.com and look into logans post. there is a story but its one persons sources doesnt mean that everything he says is true so everyone try not to get to rilled up over what appears to be nothing

  238. avatar Eric says:

The Isles wouldnt take Redden for free. He is done. Isles are not in business to take on other people’s garbage. Snow would not trsde with the Rangers unless he was blown away.

  239. avatar HansonBrother says:

Just heard here in Canada its the Rangers that are working out the deal for Guerin. Its said to be for a player on there roster ….

  240. avatar Michael says:

I see where you’re coming from, jisles. I wouldnt take Redden or Nazzy, but I’d take Zherdev if his head is on straight. He’s a wild card. I hope we got a 1st.

  241. avatar christian says:

went onto newsday.com and read logans blog. its only one mans opion/story lets not get rilled up over nothing.

  242. avatar The Express says:

    Canada Sim (227)
590 is about as reliable as “the annonymous guy” this time of year. Lots of crazy rumours come out from them.

And I agree with all those talking about the Newsday thing. The vets got more PT last year under Nolan, this year not so much. And I’m fine with that. I mean, look at the SO lineup versus Toronto: Tambellini, Neilsen, Okposo.

  243. avatar cmimbri says:

would be sweet if tambi was a throw in with geurin

  244. avatar Rangerfan says:

    I COME IN PEACE !!!!!!

Guys im hearing Guerin is coming to the Rangers , multiple canadian outlets are making light to the fact that the rangers are going to give Islanders Redden and there 1st so they get reddens contract off the books and take guerin whos deal is up after the year

Rangers give up: Redden + 1st round pick
    Islanders give up: Guerin

  245. avatar Michael says:

Why would it be sweet? Don’t throw in anybody if you don’t have to. Tambellini may not be playing well now, but he has upside. You don’t just throw that away for nothing.

  246. avatar derek says:

Keep Redden away from this team.

  247. avatar the bomber says:

i thought tambellini played his best game of the year tonight actually…but he is too weak for the NHL, except in shootouts..

  248. avatar cmimbri says:

tambi has no up side he is a career ahl player he cant make the leap to the bigs its to much of a struggle for him

  249. avatar Michael says:

If thats true, its a great deal, but only because of the 1st. Redden is solid defenseively, but his offensive skill (goal scoring) is all but gone. His contract sucks, but we can eat it.

  250. avatar Lee says:

We better not get Redden in this.

  251. avatar islesfaninNC says:

RANGERSFAN….IF ITS TRUE…WHAT R UR THOUGHTS FROM UR SIDE OF THE ROOM?

  252. avatar isles316 says:

If the Islanders take Redden I’ll puke. He sucks. Why would we take him for that contract?

  253. avatar Eric says:

Rangerfan, welcome–no issues with you here–its a game–no reason for hate on blogs. Do you really think the Isles would take back an overpaid underacheiving dman just to get a mid-late 1st rounder. sounds kinda fishy I dunno.

  254. avatar Michael says:

I don’t care if he remains a shootout specialist, you don’t just throw in players unnecessarily.

  255. avatar cmimbri says:

you take redden and the first then on draft day you pimp him and a player for a 2nd rounder .. you get a 1st and a second for geurin …..how do we take over the world today pinky……yes mr brain

  256. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

I have it on now… I will let you know.

  257. avatar Chris A says:

Captain traded to archrival team never sounds good unless it’s ridiculously good please don’t be true

  258. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Keep Redden off the Island. We did the right thing by staying away from him and signing Streit. If Redden comes here that basically eliminates any chance that we go after Komi this summer. And if Witt stays, we already have quite a bit committed over the next few years – Streit 4 more years, Witt 2 more years, Redden 5 more years. I don’t see it.

  259. avatar Islanders1984 says:

No way isles take redden, if anything rozival

  260. avatar derek says:

Redden’s contract would take away from our chances of throwing real $$ at Komo.

  261. avatar the bomber says:

reddins contract is brutal, but if theres one team in the nhl that can eat it, its us. we need him to stay at the floor next year, and now we’d have 7 picks in the first two rounds…i can’t wait for the draft…

i do think the rangers would trade redden and 1st rounder for a bag of pucks though cause that contract is easily the worst in the nhl…

  262. avatar Rangerfan says:

Well as a ranger fan i like the deal , but if you guys get another first with your 3 2nd round picks …Just think you guys will be able to move up prbly to get another top 10 pick..you might come out of draft with Taveras & That bid defenseman ..i forget his name (NOT HEDMAN)

  263. avatar derek says:

To be honest I would rather see Prucha for Guerin straight up then adding Redden and that ridiculous contract.

  264. avatar Mark says:

I get the feeling that if it is a deal involving Wade Redden, he just might bounce back. He just might work out with the Islanders. I have a hunch he’d play well. The Islanders could be a perfect place for him.

  265. avatar Bruce says:

i guess redden makes sense in the fact that they need a bigger contract if they want to trade away Weight or Witt or someone making money to stay over the minimum cap. I would assume Garth is making this deal exclusively for the 1st round pick.

  266. avatar NickyL says:

Guerin for Redden and a 1st is a steal. Redden replaces Witt if hes traded. and of course, that gives us 3 1st round picks. I’m willing to give Redden a chance. Poti stunk with the rangers. He came here and did good. Why not Redden?

  267. avatar Isles78 says:

I just turned the Fan 590 on I’ll msg if I hear anything.

  268. avatar Chickendirt says:

I don’t buy that Rag rumor at all. It’s not on TSN so it’s more than likely bunk.

Secondly, signing players to ridiculous long term contracts only to dish them off less than a year later is not Sather’s style.

  269. avatar nyislanders93 says:

The trade is most likely to Washington or Pittsburgh for a 2nd rounder and a decent prospect. Anything else involving the Rangers, Devils, or Panthers just doesn’t make sense. Montreal can also be a possibility to land Guerin but I don’t think he would waive his NTC to move to Canada.

  270. avatar Chris TMC says:

That proposed Rangers trade is exactly the kind of deal I could see Garth making- IF it wasnt the Rangers. I just dont think that Garth would trade with the Rangers, even if Billy G does want to stay near his family. I would honestly be shocked beyond belief.

  271. avatar Michael says:

I agree Bruce. The 1st rounder is the real value. And personally, I hope its Prucha more than Redden — Too much $$

  272. avatar Rangerfan says:

Look at it like this you guys get prucha & no first rounder

Or you get Redden & another 1st round pick

If rangers dont make playoffs (Very Possible) you get a top 14 pick with your other 2 1st rounders & 3 2nd rounders…WOW !!!! You guy will control the draft – i mean you guys own all cards at draft

  273. avatar cgs878 says:

Awesome, the Islanders could use Redden. Guerin will be a great fit on the Rangers too. Sounds like a win-win. Funny, Guerin’s first game as a Ranger would be at NVMC.

OK, what alternate universe did we just all end up in?!?

  274. avatar derek says:

Prucha and a 1st would be a steal.

  275. avatar The Express says:

Would the Rangers be able to fit Guerin under the cap?

  276. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    It’s not true… no report on 590.

  277. avatar StanFish says:

Hey checking in from vancouver-isle fans
    like your youth movement alot

The Rangers are the destination for Guerin according to three sources in vancouver

  278. avatar the bomber says:

prucha and a first aint happening. the first would come for eating Reddens contract. Bill Guerin alone has very little value in this league right now.

  279. avatar kjh0517 says:

Take control of this CB, I cant read anymore comments about Redden being an Islander!

  280. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Just heard update on teh fan590, they mention teh trade but nothing on the rangers

  281. avatar Isles78 says:

The Fan 590 just had an update and said nothing about destinations for Guerin…………….I will continue to listen.

  282. avatar Chris TMC says:

LOL, you guys are talking like this happening. This would be unprecedented- the Islanders trading their Captain to the flippin Rangers? I just dont see it.

  283. avatar JoeRiverside says:

Redden? Are you guys on drugs? Impossible!

  284. avatar NickyL says:

I dont see how its a bad thing to trade with your cross town rivals. Big whoop.

  285. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

Anyone think they may take on Gomez and his contract, plus a first for taking the contract.

  286. avatar the bomber says:

stan fish, help our youth movement, give us back Luongo, he’s ours!!

  287. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Well I guess we can think of it like this – if we get the Rangers first round we can root for us AND them to lose the rest of the season for the highest possible picks. In all seriousness, I still don’t see it…

  288. avatar TorontoLeafGuy says:

The Fan 590 has reported that Bill Guerin will be traded to the NY Rangers for a Roster Player

  289. avatar admin says:

I’d like to thank everyone wasting time with the Redden stuff for all the hits…CB

  290. avatar dalcy says:

    Higgens maybe?

  291. avatar jisles says:

If it is the rangers then my inclinations were on. I think Redden just needs to get out of MSG the fans have been all over him. Hey if REdden gets his game back and we decide to keep him that pretty much tells me we got Tavares and there will be no reason to draft hedman. Redden, another 1st rounder and Tavares guaranteed. this could turn around in a hurry. Go Garth.

  292. avatar Pete says:

NHL.com has Billy Guerin listed as a St. Louis Blues (Blue? Bluesy?)

    http://www.nhl.com/players/8456464.html

    Odd…but whatever

  293. avatar Lee says:

this is where the internet gets outta control.

there’s no way we’re taking Redden’s contract….there’s no way we’re moving our captain to the Rain-juzz, unless they blow us away with a deal.

    be patient…it’ll come out eventually

  294. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

if we do get Redden and a first… then Garth is a God.

  295. avatar Michael says:

I say the player is either Gomez, Redden, or Prucha

  296. avatar Chris TMC says:

Re post 287: Youth Movement? LOL- hey The Bomber, Luongo is going to be 30 in like a month. He is only like a year and a half younger than Jon Sim! :D

  297. avatar JT says:

Perhaps the fan 590 is reading point blank and getting their info here???? I have to say I would not mind Prucha and their first rounder though. I also would not mind getting Higgins…..

  298. avatar TIM says:

save us CB any updates? i’m tired of this Ranger talk

  299. avatar TorontoLeafGuy says:

Holy Crap Islander Fans You just Stole the Rangers 1st ROUND PICK !!!!! WTF SATHER

  300. avatar kjh0517 says:

good stuff CB, thanks for responding to my post, # 280, another reason why this site is amazing!

  301. avatar Chickendirt says:

    The Redden thing is BS.

If Snow wasn’t going to take McCabe and his money there is no way in hell he’s taking washed up Redden.

Stupid rumor and whoever made it up is a total hack.

  302. avatar the bomber says:

prucha better duck when he gets to the island then, our new 2nd best player (#20) may have some unfinished business.
prucha for guerin makes sense. they dont even dress the guy every night, so they are sick of him. but he has upside. i cant see us getting anything more than an enigmatic player from another team.

  303. avatar Michael says:

Guerin and Aim for Atlanta’s 1st round pick!

  304. I’ve been reading all night, great points by most of you. It is very exciting to try and figure this all out. Let’s just hope we turn this thing around. This franchise needs to be great again..

  305. avatar Chris TMC says:

Pete (293): That page is for 2006 when he actually was on the SLB.

  306. avatar Pete says:

never mind…that link seems to be in a sort of 4th dimension where Billy G is stuck in 2006, but traveled to the future to wear his Islanders jersey.

  307. avatar Blizzard says:

A Ranger deal seems very unrealistic to me….

  308. avatar Andrew says:

Pete (293) – that page is from a few years ago (the stats only go up to the end of the 05-06 season, his last 3 games are listed as being in April 2006). The current page has Guerin as an Islander:
    http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8456464

  309. avatar Lance says:

Please don’t be so nieve, there’s no way the Isles would make a deal with the Rangers to help them stay in the playoffs…..

  310. avatar the bomber says:

i think we should trade kate murray for kelly kelly before the deadline.

  311. avatar The Express says:

    Pete (293)

That page looks old…it has his last stats listed as 2006.

  312. avatar Lance says:

I say Guerin to Boston for their first round pick

  313. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Did PointBlank link on TSN bring all of “this”? Damn.

  314. avatar Vukota says:

Life on Mars starring Billy Guerin

  315. Give it up Stan Fish – Vancouver only has 1 source (not 3), and they don’t give a Toonie about where Billy G goes.

  316. avatar WhunderBee says:

ISLANDERS GET REDDEN & 1ST , JUST REPORTED ON THE FAN 590 IN TORONTO

WOW WOW WOW !!! SNOW IS IN A ZONE MAN

  317. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

CB, any other note that maybe Witt or Weight may be involved to make a bigger deal?

  318. avatar derek says:

I’m sure it did Bob #314

  319. None of this is even happening, just had the fan590 on myself and they said nothing to do with the Rangers, not to mention Chris’s comment a little ways up the page

  320. avatar WhunderBee says:

RANGERS GET CAP ROOM SO THEY CAN SIGN AVERY & MAKE A MOVE ON WEDNESDAY

  321. avatar Vukota says:

CB needs to get rid of these intruders!!!!!

  322. avatar MSA says:

Vito Spatofore from the Sopranos, a table at Rao’s for Snow, and a 1st round pick!!!!!!!

  323. avatar Lance says:

    Please ban Whunderbee

  324. avatar Coach B says:

There go the last of my Tums.

  325. avatar Eric says:

Vukota I agree–just delete this guys posts already–we are serious Isles fans who wanna talk about OUR team not BS rumors.

  326. avatar KovalevCanadian says:

    Nice Trade Islander fans

Redden is usefull plus the 1st rounder is gold

  327. avatar Isles78 says:

Post #317, I have the fan 590 on right now and I haven’t heard anything in the last 25 mins…………???????????

  328. avatar ken says:

how can this be kept a secret for 5 hours now… so weird.

  329. avatar jisles says:

I turned on 590 havent heard anything abut Guerin but lets wait and see

  330. avatar RPchief says:

I hate the rangers as much as the next guy, but another 1st rounder would be great. Bruce made a great point, we need to have some salary on the team, if we trade witt or weight, we will be under the cap

  331. avatar Dorfer says:

Here’s hoping this is the last time TSN gives credit to IPB – they opened the crazy floodgate.

  332. avatar eye on the island says:

    Hellloooooooooooooooo

590 in toronto are not reporting anything-go check their website.

can we please get back to an intelligent discussion, maybe like why should we trade hilbert when’s only 27 and plays well in gordon’s system?

as much as i wanted to dumb him last year, i think he’s worth hanging on to now

  333. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

he said it was reported on 590 in toronto, not new york

  334. avatar GoOilers says:

Nice heist by Snow.Thank god we canned sather years ago

  335. avatar Chris TMC says:

WhunderBee gotsta lay off the CAPS LOCK lol… and whatever hes taking that makes this Rangers baloney seem like a done deal! 8)

  336. avatar Michael says:

These rumors from 590 sound like BS

  337. avatar Lance says:

We wouldn’t be under the cap

  338. avatar 303Joe says:

Guys I’ve seen Higgins mentioned a few times. It’s not for him I know a guy who is very good friends with him and he spoke w/ him not to long ago and he’s heard nothing. Believe me if the guy was getting dealt in a few hours he would have known it by now if not him at least Guerin going to Mtl. if the deal is this close.

  339. avatar isles316 says:

scott w. who posted earlier just saw Redden leaving the Garden. Nothing to do with him being traded but interesting

  340. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

I’m listening to 590 Toronto. Nothing.

  341. avatar eye on the island says:

if we dont stop w/ the redden stuff this will definitely be the night this site jumps the shark

  342. avatar Chris TMC says:

isles316 (340) so he left the garden- I dont get the significance. Does he normally sleep there or what lol? :D

  343. avatar Vukota says:

Well I’m pretty sure Redden doesn’t sleep in the shower stalls and has to go home sometime.

  344. avatar the bomber says:

BREAKING NEWS!! wade redden left the garden, and he wont be sleeping at msg tonight!! you heard it first on POINT BLANK!!

  345. avatar Vukota says:

Love the Jump the Sharf reference.

  346. avatar Lance says:

Redden has another 5 years at 6.5 per, hahahahaha great signing Sather, there’s no way the Islanders take on that contract.

  347. rumors from 590 are bs because theres nothing even being discussed about it on the air right now

  348. avatar Michael says:

    Because Redden lives at MSG?!

  349. avatar Vukota says:

    I meant shark

  350. avatar the bomber says:

    you beat me vukota ha!

  351. avatar isles316 says:

haha , I know but it was so funny because I called him letting him know that people were saying that ridiculous rumor and he called me 5 minutes later after he got off the train in NYC and saw him checking his phone.

  352. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Espn 590 isn’t reporting anything. I’ve been listening for 20 minutes and haven’t even heard mention of a potential deal.

  353. avatar Lance says:

CB PLEASE ADD A CHATROOM TO THE WEBSITE!!!! THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!

  354. avatar Chris TMC says:

Yeah bomber but I beat you both lol!!! :D

  355. avatar Vukota says:

Vukota & Bomber just like the old days!!!

  356. avatar eye on the island says:

    love john hein

    bababoooooeyyyyy

  357. avatar ken says:

    Enough with the rangers.

  358. avatar Pritchett54 says:

Continuing with this redden nonsense is only adding to the joy these idiots take in starting dumb rumors on here. Just ignore the redden crap and discuss something else, or dont post anything at all.

  359. avatar jisles says:

    funny stuff #344 vukota LMAO

  360. avatar Blizzard says:

After all this BS hype I feel we are all gonna be like Oh well when we find out what the deal really is……I cant see Guerin fetching much. Certainly not Redden and a first rounder.

  361. avatar Islanders1984 says:

yeah maybe we should stop on this redden stuff, bs rumors like this is how that other site gets all its hits

  362. avatar the bomber says:

ha TMC, i missed you. comin in too fast. you better beat vukota and bomber, we werent known for our wheels.

  363. avatar Chris TMC says:

Pritchett54 (359) is right. Its probably just some verrrry wishful thinking on some Rangers fans parts lol.

  364. avatar Michael says:

#357: John Hein is annoying, I don’t like him. Or Jason Kaplan >:(

  365. avatar stevedepot says:

    BREAKING NEWS
don’t trust false rumors from bored, prepubescent ranger fans on here. You’d think the youngsters would have dates on a Saturday evening. Good night fellow Isles fans, we’ll find out in the am.

  366. avatar TIM says:

CB look at all the hits tonight, haha good to see

  367. avatar eye on the island says:

thank you all, we are better then that

but seriously, why trade hilbert when hes young, cheap, kills penalities well and is finally starting to score under go-go’s system?

think that would be a mistake, any takers?

  368. avatar kjh0517 says:

CB, please dont leave us for TSN, CBC or THN! Congrats on hitting it big time you definately deserve it, but if you do move on(to bigger, not better things) just remember the true Islander fans where ever it is you end up! Even during the first year of a rebuild, you helped make being an Islanders fan enjoyable, thanks!

  369. avatar islesfan999 says:

The trade will prob be guerin for a #2 and a B level prospect. My guess hes traded to washington or philly.

  370. avatar Chris TMC says:

LOL @ 364! They didnt need the wheels now did they? 8)

  371. avatar the bomber says:

imagine the hits CB would be getting if we actually had guys other teams wanted!

  372. avatar Blizzard says:

Id drop Hilbert like a bad habit……

  373. avatar admin says:

    non-news update posted at 11:25…CB

  374. avatar Pritchett54 says:

newsdays chat in the isles blog has 6 comments in it. That is just sad. Imagine what happens when they start charging.

  375. avatar eye on the island says:

blizzard, felt the same way last year, but i think hes really come a long this year, i’d prefer him over a third round pick, but if hes in a bigger package to get back a nicer young player, then im in

  376. avatar Isles78 says:

Thanks CB for your info on this tonight.

  377. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Hilbert is perfect for what his role is. I would keep him around next year and beyond. Unless it is a sure thing that he wont be back next year then I guess you have to deal him.

  378. avatar ken says:

CB its 2010, how can this be kept a secret for this long?

  379. avatar derek says:

CB, I’m willing to bet this is the highest # of visits ever, and it’s a Saturday night. Insane. Again, think of what next week’s gonna be like.

  380. avatar streit 02 says:

could it be for washingtons 1st rd. pick? they have a very high pick. maybe the isles packaged guerin adn a 2nd for another 1st. Ive heard that its not jersey, boston or philly. CB said he heard Guerin is very happy w/ the trade. So i would pretty much eliminate every1 except washington. Who would they have to offer?

  381. avatar islesfan999 says:

Thanks for all the info. Looking forward to the morning and finding out the info.

  382. avatar streit 02 says:

i meant a low 1st rd. pick. sry 4 the confusion

  383. avatar StevieL says:

Could it be delayed because he is going to a team that is playing late out West? Those 2 teams are fighting for a playoff spot. Minny or back to Edm? Edm has always been a favorite trade partner!

  384. avatar capsfan says:

Hey guys, here’s my (homer) suggestion. Caps need to stock up on defense. They’ve been rumored to be going after Pronger, but he’s too expensive unless we trade Nylander. Nylander has a no-movement clause and probably wouldn’t want to go to the Isles (no offense), but he might accept at trade to the Habs (who need a center since Lang went down). The Habs could send picks/prospects/whatever to the Islander, who could send Guerin to Washington for picks/prospects/whatever. Our gritty captain, Chris Clark, is once again out for the year and we need a good RW.

Nylander has been scratched the past couple games, could be on the move. The Habs need a center, they get one in Nyles. The Caps need room, they get $3 and now have the freedom to pursue Pronger seriously. They need grit and experience, they get that in Guerin. The Isles need picks and prospects, they get those from the Habs and/or Washington.

Another thing, a three-way trade might explain why both the Habs and Washington are being rumored.

    Thoughts??

  385. avatar Greg says:

Washington – could Shaone Morrisonn or Milan Jurcina be a possibility? Along with a 2nd rounder?

Pretty sure both of them played under Gordon and are familiar with his system.

  386. avatar jisles says:

I was just listening to the 590 Toronto they are talking Raptors Bball. That tells you they know nothing. The ranger thing is purely rumor. CB is right this will not get until the morning. Beleive me CB would not say good night knowing that word could come down. so I am with CB good night all back tommorrow.

  387. avatar Rob says:

    Enough with the ranger talk.

I would do guerin for higgins straight up

Also I hope we at least go after Joffrey lupel if he is on the block

  388. avatar Gary says:

Doesn’t make sense to trade Hilbert. He is a good fit with the coach. I would be a shock if Redden comes here. That’s the last thing we need. Besides, I think Sather gave him a no trade clause.

  389. avatar Priest says:

384- I doubt it because everything we’ve heard (from reputable sources) says it is a team in the East. But anything is possible. I thought at least some details, if not all would’ve leaked hours ago.

Maybe Snow and his trading partner are doing it just for fun, to see how long they can keep a lid on it. :p

  390. avatar RPchief says:

Hilbert has come a long way, good Pk guy with speed. If he’s part of a big trade then yes if it’s just him for a pick then no.

  391. avatar capsfan says:

Also, the fact that this is happening significantly before deadline day might play into the hands of Washington (meaning they are looking to dump salary in time to make a serious run at Pronger).

  392. avatar derek says:

Like someone said earlier, we are gonna be extremely disappointed when we find out what this deal is. Most likely, it’s Guerin and a pick for an under 25 player. Either a prospect or someone with some baggage. I hope I’m wrong. I’m sure something will leak after the 2 remaining games are done.

  393. avatar 303Joe says:

Question for CB. From your last post at 11:25 I seems that you know the deal and are giving respect to both teams and the players invloved. If true just let us know you know the deal and out of respect are holding back the info. Great job on getting info. on the whole Guerin story throughout the night Chris. Take care.

  394. avatar Marc says:

Chris – great job as usual. Just out of curiousity, if the deal is done and the Isles and Guerin are “very pleased” what is the reason for holding off until tomorrow for the announcement, unless it involves one of the teams playing one of the late games (which seems unlikely since Guerin likely does not want to play in the Western Conference)?

  395. avatar The Express says:

Maybe the holdup DOES mean it’s somewhere like Washington. That would be a bigger move for the Guerins that a place like NJ, Philly or Boston.

  396. avatar frank nyc says:

CB this has got to be the most posts in the history of pointblank. The most hits to probably also. This blog better not be going anywhere.

  397. avatar Chickendirt says:

You can pretty well bet that if three teams were interested in Guerin then Snow got a real good deal here.

Somebody blew the other teams out of the water with an offer.

  398. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

Great job as usual CB. Obviously for the Isles and Guerin to be pleased, Snow got what he wanted and Billy is going to a team that is definitely not competing for a playoff spot. I feel it is the Caps, as they are close to the top of the conference and have a legit shot at the Cup.

  399. avatar Walygz says:

Congrats on the traffic today CB….its official, you are a star !

    Good luck Mr. Guerin !

  400. avatar mm30 says:

See what happens when you get a link posted on TSN.ca…it becomes an a-hole convention.

  401. avatar Obs says:

If it’s Pittsburgh, it would be nice if it was a solid D prospect like Alex Goligoski of Pit. and a 2nd rounder. What ya think?

  402. avatar mm30 says:

    FAN590 talking raptors hoops…yipee!

  403. avatar Chris TMC says:

capsfan (385): I doubt its a 3-way and that complex, but that is a really well thought out and interesting suggestion.

  404. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Ron MacLean on HNIC just said “rumblings” have Billy going to Washington. For what it’s worth…

  405. avatar jonw says:

hnic just ruled out mon. fla. bos. car. n.j. pitt. buff.

  406. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Perhaps nothing has been reported because there is in fact nothing to report. I wonder if Islanders front office arranged this whole situation to drive up the cost for their aging captain.

  407. avatar cusi says:

I hope CB that you will be the first to break out the actual trade details. Great job getting a shout out on TSN and all the comments. Maybe Newsday will hire you for some good coin now that they will have to charge for their site….but then you could only write about the rangers.

I just hope it is not for a 3rd rounder..cant be in this sellers market.

  408. avatar mm30 says:

fan590 didn’t even mention Guerin on their 20/20…go to sleep Ranger fans, you saw more goals tonight than you have in the last two weeks combined.

  409. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Sounds like 660am is about to break it. They mentioned a trade in the nhl and the who and where coming up next. Tune in!!

  410. avatar Chickendirt says:

    BTW;

    BERGENHIEM FREAKIN ROCKS!!!!!!

I’m real happy he’s an Islander.

  411. avatar Obs says:

Well if Was how about John Carlson,he was drafted by the Was. in the 1st round, (27th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft?

  412. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Hope this b*tch didn’t mean nfl and the cassel trade. Who gives a crap.

  413. avatar Jon #2 says:

Scott Gordon thinks he is Scott Bowman. This does not change the fact he has coached the Isles to one of the worst records in tream history.

Wang wakes up one day and decides he needs a new GM and we are stuck with Snow.

Snow wakes up one day and decides he needs a new coach so we are stuck with Gordon.

There is no long term plan.

  414. avatar capsfan says:

No way we give up Carlson, he looks like he’s going to be a stud. Also no way we give up Alzner.

  415. avatar jonw says:

another one for CB TFP is throwing you the lead

  416. avatar mm30 says:

HNIC reporting WAS…Strickland says NOT WAS, NJ, or BOS…I have a headache

  417. avatar Mike Bryan says:

BREAKING NEWS. Isles trade Billy to the Rangers for MSG.

  418. avatar Obs says:

“BREAKING NEWS. Isles trade Billy to the Rangers for MSG.” HAHAHA, another bad trade.

  419. avatar 7th Woman says:

I hope you brought a pillow and a blanket CB. I think you’ll need it. Good night.

  420. avatar Obs says:

Pitt makes sense, I hope it’s for a 1st rounder if not, I’ll take Alex Goligoski or Alex Grant.

  421. avatar Mike Bryan says:

This is killing me. I’m not gonna sleep well unless I hear the news. As an Islander fan, I don’t see how he brings us a first rounder by himself. I think it would be a steal if we landed a 2nd round pick. Unless we package say one of our 2nd round picks in the deal there is no way we are getting a top 30 pick back.

  422. avatar TuxTax says:

Was Guerin traded to the Yankees yet?

  423. avatar Pablo Lopez says:

422 – I think it involves a pick, but ther has to be money coming back to the islanders, we already cut comrie’s salary, now guerin and over a month of hockey to go. I would think we need a player who could fill min cap space.

  424. avatar jonw says:

unless its a sign and trade for a first rounder/blue chip and thats why we might have to wait till tomorrow

  425. avatar ken says:

anyone else spent the last 2.5 hours refreshing point blank and tsn?

  426. avatar Blockness Monster says:

I have been refreshing for the last 2.5 hours.

    I think its Pittsburgh.

  427. avatar Obs says:

Wow “On the Islanders Beat”(the Newsday Blog), which I used to think had the pulse of the team, has a whole 10 posts on their blog. Great job CB.

  428. avatar SW says:

I have ken, also watching HNIC :) To straighten things out, HNIC said sources are pointing to WAS, they never said it was definately WAS as Strickland suggests.

  429. avatar mapisles2025 says:

    it must be montreal.

  430. avatar mm30 says:

426 – right there with you.

I have to believe we are getting an NHL player back in this deal or waiting for the other team to clear cap space.

  431. avatar Bobby says:

I’m with you Ken (426)….going top watch Blazing Saddles on AMC….check in later.

  432. avatar ken says:

why would they not announce it tonight, so they could get some exposure on HNIC.

  433. avatar capsfan says:

How much cap space do the Habs have?

  434. avatar Pablo Lopez says:

    Montreal has under 700K

  435. avatar mapisles2025 says:

We must be getting some of MTL’s players…my guess is Higgins and/or Mathieu Dandenault

  436. avatar capsfan says:

    Hmm, this is very interesting.

  437. avatar isles22 says:

Seems like HNIC people are calling all East teams and scratching off the ones who say its not them. They rattled off NJ, Bos, Fla, Mtl, Car, Buf, Pit as teams that said it wasn’t them. Then they talked about WSH being the team they were hearing. No mention of PHI or the RAGS.

  438. avatar Quagmire says:

Would be happy if they were somehow getting Higgins back from Montreal. Maybe they throw in Martinek or something to do so.

  439. avatar admin says:

updated at 12:30 pm with some doofy-goofy insight and some guesswork…CB

  440. avatar cusi says:

CB…besides Lou maybe your man…Darcy Regier, can keep it quiet. I am feeling Buffalo or Pitt.

  441. avatar JT says:

CB, I was thinking the same thing.

  442. avatar cusi says:

oh yeah…its 12:30am. i am just looking out for you. title as well.

  443. avatar David says:

I hope we find out soon and CB, im thankful isles fan have such a dedicated guy like you.

  444. avatar Richie66 says:

Hey CB how many hit are you getting today on the website?

  445. avatar Obs says:

Pit just seems to make sense. LW- Evgeni Malkin C-Sidney Crosby RW-BILL GUERIN.Not bad.
If it’s Montreal, LW prospect Max Pacioretty would look great in an Isles uniform.

  446. avatar Ron from Lindenhurst says:

people are not going to sleep, tonight.

  447. avatar Moose says:

FAN 590 in Toronto says Redden and First to Isles.

There’s no way that’s true, right?

I like the first, A LOT…But Redden’s Cap Hit is killer.

  448. avatar brian says:

    i will never sleep tonight

  449. avatar TuxTax says:

I’m still sticking with the Yankees for A-Rod…

  450. avatar Chris TMC says:

CB said its an eastern team, its obviously not any team with no chance, so lets do some elimination. With ath information, we have the following:
    * Boston Bruins
    * Washington Capitals
    * New Jersey Devils
    * Philadelphia Flyers
    * Montréal Canadiens
    * New York Rangers
    * Florida Panthers
    * Buffalo Sabres
    * Carolina Hurricanes
    * Pittsburgh Penguins

Out of all of those teams, there are only two that have not been eliminated by Dreger, HNIC, Strickland, etc:
    * Philadelphia Flyers
    * New York Rangers

The Isles do not trade with the Rangers and the Flyers do not need Guerin nor do I think they have the cap room, so obviously the only logical conclusion is that a trade cannot possibly happen. Or, maybe we just cant trust rumors lol. 8)

Personally, I do find it interesting that the Flyers are the only team that someone hasnt eliminated. A bit strange. But process of elimination aside, my guess might be Washington. However, I think that CBs Devils guess has some real merit to it… and IMO it is one of the few places that I think Billy Guerin would be “very happy” to go to!

  451. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Perhaps you heard Redden was traded to the Toronto Raptors cause thats all they have talked about for two hours.

  452. avatar Chickendirt says:

I knew you weren’t going to be able to sleep tonight CB.

You’re just as sucked into this as we are.

BTW; It appears the Isles are pretty good at keeping this thing clamped as well.

  453. avatar TuxTax says:

Alright alright, its gotta be to the Sox for Big Papi…straight up!

  454. avatar John says:

You do all realize this is Bill Guerin we’re talking about and not Pat LaFontaine or even Pierre Turgeon? It’s Bill F*ing Guerin. Who gives two sh*ts where he goes? He was the worst captain this team has had. They’ll get a draft pick for him from whoever and move on.

  455. avatar batchUCHB says:

Chris TMC (#452), I did the same process of elimination you did, but I ignored Strickland. There’s no way Philly can take on the 4.5 million of Guerin, even pro-rated. I’m left with the Rangers and the Caps on my list.

  456. avatar skye says:

Bill Guerin is a great hockey player. Wherever he is going, I wish him the best and hopefully he wins his Cup.

  457. avatar The Express says:

    John (456)

If you think Guerin is the worst captain this team has had, you’re out of your mind. He’s not even the worst captain of the last 5 years.

  458. avatar Mike Bryan says:

Chances are the deal will include a draft pick. God bless Billy for wearing an Islander jersey for two years but I sure as hell don’t wish him a cup where ever he ends up. I hope they choke and bust out in the first round so we get a better pick. :)

  459. avatar TuxTax says:

Colonel Mustard with the Wrench in the Conservatory???

  460. avatar Obs says:

Whoever it is I hope for a solid blue-chip prospect over another 2nd round pick.

  461. avatar nickystix says:

Yashin was by far the worst captain in the history of the franchise. signed a huge contract, didnt live up to expectations by ANY means, and got bought out. At least were getting something for guerin. he cant be the worst captain we’ve ever had

  462. avatar Obs says:

Will we hit 500 posts? Great job CB.

  463. avatar David says:

Guerin is a great sport and is doing the islanders a HUGE favor by agreeing to waive his NTC. he couldve said no bc he felt comfortable here. but hes helping the isles get something for him. I hope fans wont boo him, regardless of whatever team he gets traded too (its not even his choice and he said he loves LI) but then again some fans are idiots and will boo anyone bc hes wearing a new sweater without caring and without knowing anything.

  464. avatar Jake from Albany says:

Guerin was a great guy and was very professional. Never bad mouthed anybody. Also a great captain. Wish him the best

  465. avatar rb says:

I will be VERY p#$$ed if Guerin is sent to the Devils…we should NOT be doing anything to help the Newark River Rats win a 4th Cup thereby giving them the same number we have, and I don’t care what would come back in the deal (and cheap Lou never gives up anything anyway)…and I also would not care if that was where the player wanted to go so he could “stay home”…we’re running a franchise that competes every day in this market with NJ and we are not a charitable organization

  466. avatar Chickendirt says:

Guerin is a class guy all around and we are all very lucky to have had him to mentor this team.

Never complained once and did his job for the kids. Even stuck up for em a few times.

Guerin is all aces in my book.

  467. avatar Danny says:

Chicken Dirt, you hit the nail on the head.

  468. avatar Coral Springs Isle Fan says:

If it’s Montreal; could Doug Weight be involved in the deal? Perhaps the two of them combined gets you another 1st round pick and then some. Montreal so desperately needs help on their power play and Weight can play the point.

  469. avatar The Express says:

    Coral Springs (470)

Interesting point. Could the holdup be Weight needing to take a physical? Can you trade a player on the IR?

    Should be interesting.

  470. avatar Smokey says:

471: You can trade a player on the IR. It has been done before.

  471. avatar David says:

chickendirt, nice seeing that youre posting here and hockeybuzz lol. anyways im not sure a team would take a gamble on weight, giving up their first round pick. i dont think it makes sense express. but a good thought.

  472. avatar Sideline Observer says:

    @Coral Springs Islander Fan

Since the Habs reacquired Schnider their PP is clicking along at an amazing rate, a shade over 42% if I’m not mistaken.Right now they need a centerman, they’re good on RW.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s the Devils.

Lou Lams and his penchant for bringing back former Devils this year for the reunion tour.

  473. avatar bear says:

I wouldnt mind relieving the Rangers of their first round pick if we would be able to get one…even if it meant dealing with them…only because IMO i think they have the best chance of falling out of the playoffs with their recent struggles…unfortunately idk if we can get a 1st for guerin…i can dream though

  474. avatar Go Caps says:

OK, since I’ve been following this whole thing here tonight I figured I’d post in the madness as well. Sportsnite on CSN-MA just reported that Guerin is coming to the Caps. No word on who’s out as the deal has not been finalized but that’s their story. Also of note, Jay Beagle was not playing this evening for the Hershey Bears (Caps AHL affiliate), so it’s possible he could be included in the deal or is a call up due to a roster player being shipped over in the Guerin deal. Bears’ head coach Bob Woods was asked by the media where he was and he told them he was “unavailable”.

  475. avatar bear says:

    interesting…is Jay Beagle any good?

  476. avatar Chickendirt says:

Might be onto something. HockeyDB has him listed as “no longer on active roster”.

Don’t know if this kid is any good though.

  477. avatar Islesin2010 says:

Billy was a good Islander. I felt his desire was never really in full force this year, and I wasn’t happy with that even though I understood it is difficult for a vet to be on a last place team. I thought when he came here last summer there were a few other guys on the team that deserved the captaincy, and still feel that way (Sillinger, Witt?). But with all that being said he was consistent last year, and did a good job with the kids this year.

I’d like to see a pick for sure, and if there is a roster player thats getting paid a lot of money but has proven to be a good NHL player, bring it on! I would welcome a Redden, Gomez type contract in a second. I still think the Islanders need a big name forward that will make all the young players look even better, like a Hossa or Gaborik. Should be an interesting few days, exciting to see what happens.

  478. avatar Go Caps says:

bear – I wouldn’t call him a top prospect, probably figures to be a 3rd/4th line center. He’s got some scoring touch and works hard on the boards. Good defensively and is willing to drop them. He played a few games with the Caps this year due to injury and didn’t look out of place on the 4th line.

Also, if I had to speculate, I’d say Nylander is going in the deal as well because the Caps would be way over the cap by adding Guerin and Nylander’s salary is comparable to Guerin’s. I’d assume there’s at least a 2nd going as well.

  479. avatar SinCityHockeyFan says:

wow while i was out in the desert eating some peyote. i had a vision. garth snow makes a trade to help out the islanders now and in the future.

    to washington
Guerin plus 1st rounder from san jose and and brandon witt

    to the isles
alexander semin and a 2nd or 3rd round pick

the peyote hockey gods say it is so

we can always hope until the inevitable happens we wake up tomorrow to find out guerin was traded for a scrub rink rat and a couple bags of pucks :(

  480. avatar bear says:

Season Team GP G A PTS +/- PIM

    2007-08 Regular Season Hershey Bears 64 19 18 37 -1 41.00

hes 23 turning 24 in october

  481. avatar bear says:

yeah, i saw that from the stats unfortunately…i hope hes not in the deal unless the numbers dont tell the whole story…i was going to say, id make a deal Guerin for a 1st and a bloated contract…win win for both teams, isles get a first and the other team gets guerin and some cap room for another possible deal…

  482. avatar John C says:

Oh boy. Blazing Saddles just ended and Caddyshack is on next. I might just set up camp for the night and check back between commercials. Hopefully we get some news by 4 AM lol.

  483. avatar Chickendirt says:

Reading more on this Beagle kid he looks like he’s supposed to be a bit of a bruiser. Plays a real physical game.

    Also has a concussion history.

I think becuase of that you have to rule this kid out.

Thanks Bill Guerin….we hardly knew ya’.

Thanks for being a gentleman and a HOCKEY PLAYER and a class guy who’s family loved living amongst us–well, not me (I’m two time zones away) on Long Island.

You have carried the proud emblem of the Islander nation on your chest with honor and reverence
You have been a leader, you have
demonstrated fortitude when it was desperately needed.

You should be very proud of your service on The Island.

i already explained i was grateful for guerins services. i was a huge fan of his since his days in New Jersey. wish he couldve stayed on the island under different circumstances and a better team, i wouldnt mind resigning him in the offseason but fat chance that’ll happen if they want to get higgins and komisarek (aka the natives)

What a fun night. I think this is the excitement we’ve all been waiting for and yet I gotta say it still saddens me to see him go. In the end, Its what’s best for the team. 499. avatar Giannis says:

First off, CB, I love this site and am very appreciative of what you do. Next, I just wanted to note that Danny Briere is being activated form IR, and I do recall reading somewhere that Philly was unhappy with him so far. Is he a possibility?

  500. avatar Bri on Li says:

501? This is amazing. I am off topic a bit, but a few days ago I was questioning Bergie’s ability to hit the back of the net. Tonight, at least I stand happily corrected.

  501. avatar Bri on Li says:

    guess is wasn’t quick enough…

  502. avatar The Express says:

    Giannis (501)

I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure the waiver moves they did was to get Briere back on the team.

And with that folks, I’m going to sleep. Have a good night. Hopefully things break early tomorrow.

  503. avatar Chickendirt says:

I wouldn’t be upset if that the deal.

That gives us another pick in the top sixty of the draft for six total.

That would mean 10% of the top sixty in this years draft are Islanders.

    I’m happy with it.

  504. avatar Will says:

or even better, extra picks to trade to move up. Man, imagine if they flip 3 of the 2nd rounders to get another Top 5 pick?

  505. avatar Chickendirt says:

    They aren’t done yet either.

Witt and Weight are still in play.

This is gonna get reeeaaaallll gooooood.

I’m gettin my popcorn ready for the draft. This deadline looks to set the course for this franchise. I’m likin it.

  506. avatar duff says:

  507. avatar Caps Nut says:

Kudos to Billy G for not letting on about the problems between himself and Gordon (Sunday’s Newsday). He’s doing Snow and company a big favor waiving his NMC. Good luck wherever you end up Captain. And thanks…

  510. avatar DP says:

CB–do you have any comments on the story in sunday’s Newsday that the locker room has been a divided camp rookies & gordon vs. vets since december???

I’ll get to the Gordon-veterans issue with a relatively brief post when this Guerin thing is over. Unless a story is cheesy or (in my view) improperly reported, it’s not my place to get into the work of fellow writers covering the Islanders. But I will have some basic comments much later in the day, or perhaps not till Monday if the Guerin Watch becomes an all-dayer. For now, the focus of the blog and this thread will be on Guerin. Discuss Greg’s story on Islandermania…CB

  515. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

WOW!! 500 + posts … seems the speculators came out of the wood works.

I think Isles fans have to manage expectations … CB’s advice about not reading into rumors is golden … heed it… or your over hyped expectations will leave you bitter and disappointed.

Billy G. did us Isles fans proud … He wasn’t the Billy G of 30 years old … but I’m proud to have watched him play in the Blue & Orange.

  516. ugh…so tired. I think they should just announce it so i can take a nap already. Since now its too late to even sleep…

  519. avatar Mouthwash says:

I love when a Player gets traded all the dirt comes out. Comrie and Campoli get traded we learn that Comrie wanted out and Campoli asked for a trade. Now this thing with Guerin and Gordon. Amazing!

Well anyways, I have a hunch it’s with Pittsburgh. They want the cup and just like what they did getting Hossa last year they will do this year. They don’t want to rebuild anymore so this is my prediction.
Pittsburghs 1st Round for Bill Guerin.

  520. avatar Pritchett54 says:

    No one liked Laviolette
    No one liked Nolan
    No one likes Gordon

Guess what? When you are losing, the players dont like the coach. Especially if you are a veteran and you have put in your 8+ years in the league and you are getting less icetime than rookies.

You think the isles players in the late 70′s and 80′s would have liked Al Arbour if they were losing. They all would have despised him. Heck, they may even have hated him when they were winning 4 cups. I dont care how they feel about the coach, I just want them to try their best and win.

It seems as though Gordon can only get the best out of the young players(except tamby) and the worst out of the vets(except streit)

  521. avatar Madchef says:

CB you are a madman, thanks for keepin us up to date and stayin up all night(unless you are an insomniac). As per all the posts we love you and wait on your info like a TV soap opera cliffhanger. I do hope this gets done soon though because the suspense is keeping me up all night….well last night.

  522. avatar Bob Bassen says:

RE: Newsday story. B F D! Is anyone really surprised that some of the veterans are offended? I am not saying that Gordon and the team has handled *things* perfectly but this is making *news* out of something that most of us were aware had to be occurring. Basically the same thing that happens on every team in every sport in reference to the mixing of Veterans and Youth. Heck, the same sort of situations arise in every workplace on the planet! The key will be AFTER this *first* season going forward with how Gordon coaches, handles the media and his *possible* related idiosynchratic ways.
    No worries.
    Go Isles!

  523. avatar Jim says:

I agree Bassen. Logan’s article was ridiculous. If the vets are really that angry about being left out of video meetings, then maybe they aren’t the great leaders we all thought they were.

  524. avatar doc says:

There’s been one HUGE difference between this Islander team and the teams of the last 3 or 4 seasons.

This team actually plays the game with EFFORT!!!

I can honestly say that I’ve only seen a few games where the EFFORT was not up to par.

And this team has been out of the playoff picture since Thanksgiving.

KUDOS TO GORDON! and to the players for playing the game for themselves, for the loyal fans and for their coach! I’ve been entertained despite “knowing” that they weren’t a very good team.

    DOC

  525. avatar Mouthwash says:

#526 I agree. I feel like this team plays with effort which is a great sign. I hope that article doesn’t cause the fans to go on the “lets bash Gordon” bandwagon. I really think he is the perfect coach for this team. Give him time folks!

  526. avatar beatlebailey says:

vets can su*k it as far as i am concerned. While gordon comes off as a downer with the media the kids are playing their butts off for him. Trade all of the crybabies…last night was a great game!

  527. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

No other sport’s trade deadline is as active and as interesting as the NHL’s.

  528. avatar dose says:

this is all eerily reminscent of the year milbury gor rid of lavoilette after some of the older, no longer effective players complained about how he ran things.
who cares what they say. those guys don’t matter anymore. and this time the coach is not getting fired.

  529. avatar miket says:

enough already about the room….what is the deal with this trade?

  530. avatar dmen77 says:

CB – This just awesome 530+ posts and counting.

I did not get a chance to post last night – playing cards with my buddies. It was real refreshing to have a good 10-12 Rags fan friends around and not get heckled by them all night. When I announced Guerin had been pulled from the lineup after warmups, I like everyone else thought a deal would be announced soon – ah it makes it fun to be left in the dark for a little bit wondering. Look at all these comments!

Anyways, my Rags fans usually gang up and heckle but once they realized we have 5 picks in the 1st two rounds and maybe even another once this Guerin deal goes down, they said hey we are doing this rebuild the right way and in 2-3 years we could be the Penguins or the Blackhawks.

Lets hope Snow, Jankowski and the scouts strike goal with this picks.

  531. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

I just read Logie’s article regarding the vets and it is what it is. If Gordo was playing the vets too much we all would be screaming because we have no shot at the cup anyways. Because he is playing the youngsters more than the vets, the vets aren’t happy. That is what happens when you lose. I am fine with some of the older guys being upset because I think you can definitely see progress being made with quite a few of the youngsters but i still have one concern. And I mentioned it in an earlier post and Logie mentions it towards the end of his article – it might be tough to draw one or two big ticket free agents here if Gordo is going to have this sort of reputation. The only way to solve that problem is to win but these kids still need a vet presence to guide them.

  532. avatar Andrew says:

I tell you, Guerin is one hell of a captain and individual for allowing this deal to happen. Consider the fact that he is in the last year or so of his career, has a family, and was comfortable on Long Island, for allowing this he shows that we made the right decision giving him the ‘C’. This is exactly what Mats Sundin DIDN’T do last year, and why the Leafs are screwed now. Could you see Drury doing this? Heck no. Good for Guerin, with any luck he resigns this July.

  533. avatar John says:

Read the Newsday story… nothing earth shattering there… just muck racking. The team is going younger and you would have to be a moron not to see it. The kids have been bringing it since the all star break and the experience they are gaining is immense. You can see where the team wants to go and I think eventually they will get there.

  534. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Show me a 30th place team where there is no discontent with the coach and i’ll show you a team where the players don’t care. The good news out of this is that they are all upset. They have lost a lot of games this year and if these guys were just here for the paycheck than they would act like everything is alright. But they aren’t. They are showing they heart.

  535. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

I can’t believe this thing is still going.

To have the major newsbreakers scrambling like this, is just amazing.

    Only the Isles…lol.

I’m sure it is a great return for Billy. Why else would Garth do the deal now instead of waiting for Wednesday.

It has to be a first round pick or a second with a pretty decent prospect.

I would rather have the first… to parlay that into a trade to move up in the draft.

    Good Luck Billy!!!!

  536. avatar JayK says:

I don’t know what this says, but here are some stats that show three wildly different teams:

    First 24: 10-12-2

    Next 22: 2-17-3

    Next 16: 7-7-2

  537. avatar Adam in Upstate says:

CB, international man of sore backs and tired eyes….

Looking at the games today, and the time it’s taking for this to go through, you’d have to wonder if any of today’s teams are involved don’t you? At least, it’s a thought a bit…

NJ/ PHI @ 1, PITT,FLA,WASH @ 3… would they be able to move him in time? Seems like a bit of a waste to pull him last night and let his new team miss a game from him already potentially

  538. avatar Richie66 says:

Getting back to Guerin, some people believe that the hype is getting out of control and in the end we will probably just get a 2nd round pick in return. I would think that trading your captain a couple of days before the trade deadline would mean that the offer was too good to be true as come deadline day teams really start competing with each other and drives the prices up. I think Garth may have played his cards well and said, I got this great deal here, why risk turning it down and wind up getting nothing on Wednesday (ie Satan and Tank). I will gladly take another 2nd rounder for Billy. We will then have plenty of time to package those picks and move up.

  539. avatar Dan says:

I am wondering if anyone else is included in the trade and or maybe a 2nd round pick from Isles to get a 1st rounder. My three teams where I think he is going are:
    MTL
    WSH
    NJ

  540. avatar David says:

Sounds to me like Gordon has been upfront and honest with the vets the whole season. No one denied the conversations he claimed to have with the vets regarding the situation. He let them know where he stood and what he was doing. What is all the whining about? Who is this “locker room source”? If you have the nads to publicly criticize the coach have the decency to allow your name to be printed. The complaint is that they were left out of rookie meetings (they don’t need to be at) and that they aren’t getting as much ice time as the rookies?! Are the Islanders vets the only ones on earth who don’t realize the Islanders are in a rebuild with a youth movement? Maybe this is proof positive that some of our vets aren’t the sharpest knives in the droor. The team played with passion last night and has been for some time now. Gordon has elevated the level of play from several players including Danis,Okposo,Bergenheim, and Neilsen. Seems to me that he’s doing a fine job.

  541. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who cracked me up…Guerin for Ryan Smyth and the rights to Kirk Muller. Had to share the laugh with all…

  543. avatar Secmaster420 says:

Wherever he goes, or whatever happened over the last few months, of all the players who have worn the Islanders jersey since they last won a playoff series, Bill Guerin was one of the classiest. I was proud to have called him an Islander.

  545. avatar eye on the island says:

lets think about why this is taking so long logically

the main obstacle, guerins nmc, has been settled, so what then could be holding up the deal?

it has to be the islanders are getting a player back in return(quite possibly an ufa) and have a 24 hour window to negotiate an extension w/ the player they are getting back. at this point its the only logical reason behind the delay.

If anyone else has a good thought as to why its taking so long i’d love to hear it.

  546. avatar Dan says:

Is anyone suprised about Gordon and his players? Lets be honest we hired him because he was the only one willing to take the job working for Wang. Once the candidates were announced it was clear who would be the coach. Torts would never coach the islanders. No one in their right mind would work for Wang except for a washed up goalie and a minor league coach looking for a shot. Sell the team Wanger please!!!

  547. avatar Paul* says:

Gordon had problems with Witt, now Billy G as newsday reported and it just goes back to the old story of a Lack of respect for Vetts.
Maybe Billy G should apply his no move clause and give it right bak to them and walk away for nothing! Dont give in Billy their is not to many games left.

  548. avatar Dan says:

CB I would love to here an update from you on the article on Newsday regarding the division in the locker room between the younger players and the vets. Article does not make it seem that any potential veteran summer free agents will be signing here not like they would have anyway but this is making it more unlikely.

  549. avatar JoeRiverside says:

CB: You said “Only Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey Devils could keep this under wraps for so long” How about the Islanders? It takes two to tangle. Even a former Insder like you can’t get the scoop. Snow has to be commended.

  550. avatar 7th Woman says:

  552. avatar eye on the island says:

joe riverside, was thinking the same thing-

if thats the case, snow really becoming a solid gm much sooner then expected

  553. avatar Greg says:

I believe that this trade leads to another based on the player we get from the first trade partner and unless it all falls the way Garth wants, the trade will fall through.

  554. avatar Tony F. says:

CB, does Logan’s story today about Guerin vs. Gordon have any substance? I just don’t trust any of the newsday reporters.

  555. avatar JoeRiverside says:

Dan #550 – Islanders are building for 3-4 years down the road. No young veteran (26-27 yrs old) is going to want to sign and go through the growing pains the next 3 years. And the Islanders are not going to sign an older veteran stud (33-34yrs old), because they will be too old when the kids hit there prime. They will sign Guerin/Weight type players that will 1. put them over the salary min, 2. teach the kids some leadership, and 3. help put fannies in the seats. The Islanders will land these fading stars because they afford to pay a little more and promise playing minutes. IMHO

  556. avatar Mouthwash says:

#548, why do you want Wang to sell the team? You don’t want a team on Long Island anymore? because that’s what’s going to happen – and no they aren’t going to BK or Queens if that is the case. They are going to Canada or KC.

Anyways, enough of that.. sorry to feed the fire CB.

I really think he is going to either Washington, Devils or Pittsburgh. All those teams are in the east and they are serious about making a run in the playoffs. None of them are in “rebuilding” mode and would give up a prospect and a 2nd rounder if anything. Lets just hope news comes quickly because the anticipation is killing me!!

  557. avatar upstatenyifan says:

I don’t think that this deal is going to meet the high expectations of many of my fellow PB readers, but the suspense is killing me! C’mon NYI, lets hear some details so that we can all exhale!

  558. avatar JoeRiverside says:

I forgot to add to my post #557. When the Islanders’ kids start paying dividends 3-4 years out, then I think the team needs to shoot the mother load and pay for 1 or 2 high priced star free agents. To pay for them now would be wasting value capital that can be better spend in 2012-13. Again, IMHO.
    JoeRiverside

  559. avatar John says:

In all the hoopla with Guerin… this may have been missed… Looks like Colin Campbell’s hands were tied on this one a after giving Witt a 5 gamer. I’ll be angry if any suspension from here on out isn’t a 5-gamer for shots to the head. The below excerpt is from Rotoworld.

Derek Boogaard was given a five-game suspension by the NHL.
Boogaard is being punished for elbowing Calgary’s Brandon Prust in the head in the final minutes of Calgary’s 4-1 victory over Minnesota Friday. Prust could miss time due to a possible concussion. Boogaard will be eligible to return on March 10th against the San Jose Sharks.

  560. avatar islesfan999 says:

This no news is tough. I want to know the trade already. Maybe snow will have traded half the team when we find out. Haha good luck snow i hope this is a smart trade and somehow we can get #2 and a good prospect.

  561. avatar Blizzard says:

Man I jumped out of bed this morning to finally see what this trade was all about and nothing! Drats! If details are being ironed out lets hope its in the Islanders favor.

  562. avatar JoeRiverside says:

#559 – you’d be suprise what teams will give up (look at past Islander deals). There is a lot of pressure on GMs to make the playoffs. If a team has alot of talent in the system and feel a key addition will make a major impact, they will trade a high draft pick and prospect for Guerin. Also, remember these players are called prospects, because no one knows how they will pan out. Few pick after the first round end up making a serious impact on a NHL roster.

  563. avatar guerin13 says:

this is nuts – but probably the most interesting and entertaining this that’s happened to us all year, and we’re going to do this all over again on wednesday!! at this point i would have to say that this is going to be a bigger deal than we thought and that a 3rd team is involved. i think garth’s got a sunday surprise for us.

  564. avatar capsfan says:

Perhaps the deal is getting held up because it is a three-way deal (the Habs and WAS) or because the other team is still trying to clear cap space (WAS, Nylander).

  565. avatar Original Rob says:

I think we should maaaaybe temper our expectations on a return for a 38-year old forward with 16 goals?

Also, I personally would be happier with a solid prospect who’s 1 or 2 years developed already, rather than a late first-rounder. For rationale, please refer to the 1999 NHL entry draft results.

  566. avatar Coral Springs Isle Fan says:

The early start to making moves only shows that there may be more moves then we expected. If this Guerin trade goes down by days end then there still is 3 more days to consider additional moves with chips in your pocket.

I’m not surprised if there is tension amongst the vets in the locker room. Bottom line though is the team has played hard and competed so Gordon must be doing something right. He is a teacher and he is teaching non stop.

  567. avatar Jeff says:

Maybe Gordon will alienate DP to the point where he asks for a trade. That would be the only positive this failure of a coach could add. The Snow/Gordon team honestly makes me long for the days of Mad Mike. At least he was entertaining.

  568. avatar AJ says:

I’ve heard from someone I know who works with the NHL that the Caps offered a 4th rounder this year and a second rounder next year…

  569. avatar billy says:

we’re getting komisarek and/or higgins. Komisarek’s contract is holding it up. Guerin already waived his no-move clause so i cant see this all being about him thinking about it.

if this was just for a draft pick it would have been done already. imo

  570. avatar Mike Olivo says:

Am I the only one tired of these stories with anonymous quotes from players and people close to players? Not just this team, but all of sports and politics. And shame on the papers for printing this garbage. If someone won’t put their name on it, then you shouldn’t print it. We are required to put a name and email on our comments, but for a story in a major newspaper, no source is required…

  571. avatar Steve says:

Even if Scotty Bowman was the coach, the vets would probably be moved for the sake of rebuilding. After reading the Newsday article, I just hope that Gordon didn’t mess up too much with all the vets so that it gets around the league that he’s a problem to play for – to flesh that out, I’ll defer to Botta, Jaffe and Stan Fischler and the Hockey Night in NY team. I always remind myself that it’s a business and that we have a lousy arena. Go Islanders!

  572. avatar NYICHAMP39 says:

AJ- if that is true this deal would have been done by now. I would be very upset if Snow didnt come away with at least a second rounder in this years draft and a B level prospect. Like CB has been saying, Islanders players are a hot commodity bc no teams are selling this year. A fourth round pick and a second round pick for Guerin after getting a first round pick for Campoli would be a joke.

If the deal was the Caps second rounder this year AND next then i would consider the deal a good one.

    Just my thoughts.

  573. avatar jethro09 says:

I’m starting to get nervous…I don’t like the idea of Garth Snow making a “massive” deal involving multiple players. The last time he did that, we would up with Ryan Smyth for two months and lost a first rounder and two “prospects”.

  574. avatar christian says:

just read the article it makes me angry at newsday and the cowards who wont even print their “sources” names. it sounds like a bunch a little girls who are upset cause they feel excluded. grow up you bunch of cry baby veterans and be men and tell us who you are

  575. avatar islesfan999 says:

I wouldnt worry too much we are rebuilding. I dont think snow will trade any young guys or picks. We are going to prob get a pick and prospect for Billy. Its just complicated bc maybe we have options and dont know which trade 2 accept? or maybe they want to resign billy. who knows cb will keep us updated.

  576. avatar Quagmire says:

I would guess its most likely that Guerin is trying to work an extension with whatever team it is before agreeing to approve the trade. Would be interesting though if it is a larger deal.

  577. avatar Dan says:

#573 It is too late. We love blaiming the arena for the fact that no vets want to come to LI. This is the real reason. We are a joker franchise lead by a backup goalie and coached by a minor league coach. No one wants to come to this idoit filled hornet’s nest that is the New York Islanders.

  578. avatar Mike B. says:

I say that the Isles are negotiating with Komisarek, and thats whats holding it up. Guerin and a 2nd for Komisarek and a 2nd

  579. avatar Mike Olivo says:

In regards to the Newsday thing, didn’t they write the same story last year but instead it was the Ted Nolan was alienating the young players and focusing on the veterans? Seems like this team always has locker room issues. Why is it we never hear stories like this from Detroit or New Jersey? Players, even if they are disgruntled, keep their mouths shut. Besides a good draft and signings, this organization needs to work on their culture. Stop the bickering and focus on the cup..

  580. avatar The Kid 77 says:

Two of my friends who are still friendly with Higgins (played together on Long Island Gulls–my friend played at UMASS lwl when Higgins was at Yale) have told me that he texted Chris last night (we went to the game together) and Chris said he was speaking to a team offical today. He thinks he may be going to Calgary.

Also note that Higgins is and RFA this year and loves LI. Don’t be surprised if he and Komi are here within the next two years

  581. avatar sbeer says:

What about a deal that would have Jay Bouwmeesteer come to the Island for Guerin, a B level prospect and SJ’s 2009 1st Round pick from Ott. If the Isles can sign Bouwmeester to a long term deal this would be great!

  582. avatar hubie39 says:

Does anyone know what time practice is today? Thanks in advance.

  583. avatar phishstyx says:

guerin, prospect cory Travino, maybe something else for komisarek

  584. avatar Dan says:

I know Isles will be rebuilding but to say they are going to just play all prospect for the next 3-4 years is a little absurd. Isles will need some sort of mix of mostly prospects and a few vets here and there. It is unreasonable to think all picks in this years draft will make the team next year and there aren’t too many prospect down in the farm. If thats the case Isles should trade Streit who is 31 and will be able to fetch the most return for more than anyone else currently on this team….

  585. avatar Mike B. says:

sbeer, I like your optimism, but Guerin would not approve a trade down here. He wants to stay up there. I hope we get Komisarek.

  586. avatar The Express says:

Can we please stop the Komisarek talk right now? As a FA we have about a 10% chance. But there’s no way Montreal trades him before their playoff run, especially since they want to resign him.

  587. avatar AJ says:

NYIChamp39(574) – I didn’t say that Washington’s offer was Garth’s best offer on the table. The info I got was that Washington made an offer, and that was it. I think you’re right, if that was Garth’s best offer it would have been done by now. My guess is he’s working on something better, which is why the deal is being held up.

  588. avatar Zach says:

    agreed express
if its anybody its higgins but i even doubt that. its most likely a case of having 2 options a 2nd rounder or a b prospect and we dont know which one to take yet

  589. avatar Larry Ziegler says:

Komisarek is a star, he is not getting traded for an over the hill winger who scres 18-20 goals. If you want Komisarek it will cost Bailey and a 1st round pick.

  590. avatar Mike B. says:

Ha ha, you think Komisarek would cost Bailey and a 1st? He’s a UFA. Not a chance he would fetch that. I’d say Toews or Ness and a 2nd.

  591. avatar RHL Vin says:

Unless Snow includes Witt or some other player of value the Isles will only recieve a 3rd rounder, 2nd rounder if they are lucky,

  592. avatar Mike says:

I think it’s gonna be Guerin and Weight for S.Kostityn and the deal is being held up because MTL is waiting until they move Higgins to Calgary for what I don’t know but most likely a d-man.

  593. avatar the kid 77 says:

You people really need to have your heads examinded–Komiserik is an UFA at the end of this year. He will possibly command 6mil per. The islanders are only one of the few teams who could do this.

Why would you trade a Veteran and a prospect when you can have him for free in 4 months. DCo some research. MTL is going to blow up their team. Higgins can be had. Get Komi for free in July

  594. avatar The Express says:

    Toews and a second?

Ryan Smyth cost more than that, and he was a UFA to be. C’mon people. Komisarek is young, an All-Star, and an absolute game changer.

Let’s just trade them Tambellini for. Oh, we might need a pick coming back to make it work for us.

  595. avatar the kid 77 says:

    Mike 594

Why would they bring in Sergei Kostityn?? He was sent back down to the minors and has all sorts of legal trouble. He is a complete bust of a prospect. His bother is the one tearing it up.

Is everyone just going to the Candiens website and picking names they know?

  596. avatar Mike B. says:

I want no part of Sergei Kostitsyn. He’s garbage. Andre is the good one.

  597. avatar Mike B. says:

We would trade for Komisarek and sign him long term so we don’t have to deal with other teams driving up the price, and it also removes the risk of him signing elsewhere. That’s why.

  598. avatar christian says:

i just hope we get somthing good this honestly is driving me nutz not knowing and all this speculation

  599. avatar Mike B. says:

I doubt a small trade would cause this much of a ruckus. I think this is a biggie.

  600. avatar the kid 77 says:

    Mike B 599

The islanders are going to have roughly 25 million dollars to make up to get to the cap floor–if you have to over pay 1-1.5 mill a year for him…does that really matter at this point??

Why not trade for Higgins –gove him the ext(he is an RFA) and then use him as a toll to bring Komisarek in. Also, I don’t know is you have seen Mike play–but he is a younger version of Witt. Not exactually sure he can move the puck that great.

  601. avatar islesfan999 says:

I think Guerin is not traded yet and Snow is a genious. He keeps getting the bidding higher and eventually he will trade guerin in a few hrs and we will all be happy. Maybe its guerin weight and witt to montreal for laraque, higgins, subban and a #1 pick.

  602. avatar the kid 77 says:

What about Guerin and the 1st from San Jose and a 2nd to Atlanta for Kovalchuk (with ext). He has an opt out clause this year

  603. avatar Otter says:

Any publicity is good publicity and it seems all anyone can talk about is where in the world is BG? I only hope that after the smoke has cleared it was worth the wait.

  604. avatar Billy H says:

My guess the reason behind all this talk about vets being exiled is that the isles are in last place. I’m sure there is some turmoil in the Red Wings lockeroom, but you will never hear about it because they are winning. The wings media and players are too busy talking about their first round matchup maybe who they need to acquire for the stretch run, and have no time to discuss lockeroom problems.

  605. avatar RHL Vin says:

I think everyone is getting all crazy that this is gonna be some big deal and that the Islanders are gonna get an impact player………you all have pipe dreams. The only way to get quality is too trade quality, and as much as I like Guerin he is not going to fetch a lot in a trade. Expect a 2nd rounder and hope we can somehow package some picks for another 1st round pick and select American Jordan Schroeder

  606. avatar 4195mary says:

Gainey traded his starting goalie for a 2nd round pick last year. He values these picks more than most GMs. Unless its an established player, I’m betting against Montreal

  607. avatar Mike says:

    Kidd77

I think he’s a good player that could benefit for a change in scenery. I think he will be better than his brother.

If you don’t like him, your entitled to your opinion. But please do not make assumptions that would suggest to attack me or anybody else because you feel your opinion is superior.

  608. avatar blockness monster says:

I really like Gordon. He is not perfect but he is really starting to build a core for the team.

That said….I hope weight stays even if Guerin leaves.

  609. avatar Richie66 says:

Maybe Garth is thinking to 2010 and trying to get a early start on stockpiling those picks

  610. avatar Rob says:

I just like the ads on the site that say “buy your next Islander jersey – the jersey that they show you is a Tavares 91 Isles home jersey….oh and isnt it ironic that Guerin was brought in to be the captain 3 days after Smyth turned us down to be captain – Guerin is getting traded, Smyth is returning to the Island tomorrow night…

  611. avatar beatlebailey says:

just heard from reliable “sources” KATE MURRAY IS HOLDING UP THE GUEEIN DEAL!! (E5) :-)

  612. avatar mm30 says:

Sorry if I this shouldn’t be here CB but I have to rant about Greg Logans column today.

A)I will put all my money that his unnamed source is Mike Comrie.

B)Gordon played the veterans in all key situations in the first half(to a fault as written here) and they failed. Is there any vet who really believed this team had a shot at the playoffs after DP went down?

C)You win 2 out of 21 games and are out of the playoffs in mid-December and you don’t expect changes? The Isles let be known last summer that they would be rebuilding.

D)The kids are the future here…not Guerin, Witt, Comrie, Park, not even Trent Hunter.

E)This will affect us signing free agents?!?! We are not signing free agents to build this team…supplement it yes. We are building through the draft and going with homegrown young players.

Hey Scott is a rookie coach who is trying to find his way but he was brought in to develop young players.

I think Comrie should wonder why he has been with 5 different organizations by the age of 30.

Sorry for the long rant but I had to do it.

  613. avatar beatlebailey says:

    i wish i could spell..lol

  614. avatar the kid 77 says:

Mike–attack? Little sensitive for a hockey board, no?

All I am saying is that people are speculating and making ridiculous assumptions. I would also think for and Islander fan you would not want Yashin Jr. on this team.

I am a die hard hockey fan and I find it wasteful when there is a legitimate conversation and names are being randomly thrown in.

  615. avatar DanNOLA says:

Am I the only one who thinks we will all be disappointed when this is all said and done? I’m thinking it’ll be Guerin for a late second round pick. Whoop-dee-doo.

  616. avatar Adam in Upstate says:

Watch Guerin get hurt at practice today..
    lol

  617. avatar Islanders1984 says:

kidd 77 that ATl trade wouldn’t work guerin won’t waive his clause just to go to teh 2nd to worst team, it would be great though

  618. avatar MT says:

Maybe he’s doing his rounds, saying his goodbyes to his teammates? He could be at Iceworks but not necessarily practicing with them. And I guess the trade isn’t with Jersey, aren’t they playing in an hour?

  619. avatar christian says:

Practices are open to the public right??

  620. avatar Tony says:

    596

    Komisarek is also a UFA

    Just an FYI

  621. avatar Jim says:

If they didn’t let Guerin play last night, they aren’t going to let him practice today.

I don’t discount the possibility of him getting hit with a puck while in the stands, or slipping and falling while walking around.

  622. avatar StevieL says:

LOL! I love some of these trades being suggested!! Rest assured that if Montreal trades Komi and a 2 for Guerin and a 2, the Canadian fans will burn down the Forum!! Trade your best D-man for a 38 yr old when you are trying to make the playoffs? UFA or not, ain’t going to happen!I think I love the Kovalchuk one better. Guerin and the SJ1 and a 2 for Kovalchuk “and a 2″!! You do realize Kovalchuk is the best goal scorer in this league behind only Ovechkin, check his stats for Feb. on a crappy team. Never going to happen! Face it! Guerin alone ain’t bringin back much! Having said that, if Higgins is available, find a way to bring him here!!

  623. avatar 7th Woman says:

Even if the news broke while you were on the road, you’d have it first.

  624. avatar isles316 says:

mm30, I agree with you. Not for anything, if Gordon wanted Guerin “exiled” maybe he had good reason because Guerin hasn’t put any effort into his play at all lately and he hasn’t been a captain. So if the veterans are unhappy then tough. Be part of the team.

  625. avatar isles72 says:

    (617) …..and I’d be very pleased with that to be quite honest

  626. avatar BringtheReign says:

My guess it’s the Caps. Fleishman/Bourque and a pick coming our way

  627. avatar mrlbem says:

If it is a “sign and trade” (or is it “trade and sign”), and we’re talking about only local teams, then who could it be? I don’t think the hold up is due to negotiating an extension with Guerin. So who is there on NJ, Boston, Philly, Washington, Pitt or Montreal whom we would want as a FA and try to sign as a condition of the deal. Komi? Stahl? I think that Pittsburgh may be a logical destination because they may give up Stahl or a 1st round pick because (1) they feel pressure to make the playoffs and (2) they will have to shell out a ton of money to Sid and Malkin in a few years and may not have enough cap room for another star player.

  628. avatar Joe Muccia says:

    Chris,
When you speak with Bill, and you undoubtedly will, please let him know that Isles fans, especially me, are very appreciative for all that he has done for this team and that it has been a pleasure to have him as an integral part of this franchise during a very difficult year.
    R/
    Joe

  629. avatar SS says:

I looked back at the second rounds of the drafts between 1997 and 2001. At best, 1/3 of second round picks become NHL regulars. On average, much less.

Therefore, if I were Garth I’d stop settling for second rounders and prefer established prospects in return for guys like Guerin and Witt.

After the second round, maybe a player or two per round becomes an NHL regular.

  630. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

All this speculation is absurd … my speculation is that a lot of fans have high expectations and will be disappointed … the delay may simply be working out the numbers so that the trading partner stays under the ceiling … and / or the Isles remain above the floor and need to take some salary back … there … that’s my speculation for the day … till then I’ll patiently await word from the Isles or CB… heck … maybe Snow is enjoying this and making us squirm … LOL!

  631. avatar JoeRiverside says:

    MM30 #614:
I pretty much said the same thing in an earlier post. Islanders are rebuilding and I’m having more fun watching them this year vs. prior years. I see a purpose here and I like seeing the kids develop. I think Snow and Gordon are doing a good job. Why should the Islanders be giving the veterans powerplay time, etc if the kids are the future and need this valuable experience. My comment to newsday – Veterans are bitching, Bid F’ing Deal.
    Joe

  632. avatar Islander505 says:

I’m thinking Guerin has some kind of incentive clause in an obscure contractual agreement with Botta to get the comments on this blog entry over 1000.

  633. avatar Potvin's Cups says:

The Isles will tentatively have a cap hit of 30 million next season, so they need to add 10 million, maybe less depending on changes to the cap floor because of the economy. Let’s send Guerin, Witt, and the 1st round pick from Ottawa to Montreal for Markov.

  634. avatar dmen77 says:

Does it make a lot of sense to acquire Staal? We already have Bailey, Nielsen, Weight (inj), Park (inj) and McAmmond as our centers. Unless there is a complete firesale between now and Wednesday, I don’t see Staal coming here.

Also, having Bailey, Nielsen and Staal as our centers completely eliminates us drafting Tavares….not saying Hedman is the wrong choice but Tavares is the franchise player we need that will bring some attention back to this team.

  635. avatar Jim says:

SS – while that is true, the more picks you have in the those rounds, the better chance there is that one will pan out. There was an article on Yahoo Sports about the Islanders rebuilding through the draft. Oddly enough, Neil Smith was quoted throughout the piece and he said stockpiling draft picks is the way to go. He made the analogy that draft picks are like throwing spaghetti at a wall. The more spaghetti you throw, the better chance you have of some sticking.

  636. avatar Islander505 says:

Does anyone remember the absolutely SCINTILLATING pass Neilsen made to Bergie on that 2nd goal last night?
    Or was that last week?

That was the kind of “skill play” we haven’t seen around here very often.

  637. avatar streit 02 says:

so its not philly, washington, boston, montreal, florida, carolina, buffalo, ….so it must be jersey? They said it was for a cup contender so i wouldnt consider teh rangers or pittsburgh a cup contender. Who could jersey offer us? Interesting, but annoying waiting around. I liked the possible scenario of waiting for a player to sign a contract which would mean the Isles trying to get someone under contract. Makes sense considering Garth Snow has apparently learned his lesson from the Ryan Smyth deal.

  638. avatar Joe says:

TheKid77, like Atlanta can’t get anything better than that for Kovalchuk? He’s a top 3 goal scorer in the NHL, he’d fetch at least the Isles’ first rounder and one of their prospects.

  639. avatar the kid 77 says:

Ah–I guess no one read my previous posts. The sarcasm was not laid on thick enough

  640. avatar Joe says:

Also, for what it’s worth, a friend of mine who has a connection with the Islanders called me up last night and told me, “Book it, guaranteed. Guerin to the Penguins for a 2nd rounder.” Again, take it for what it’s worth, but he’s been right about things like this before, so don’t completely throw it in the trash.

  641. avatar coolhndluke says:

    I’d take Clarkson from NJ

  642. avatar streit 02 says:

mrlbem – i was thinking along the same lines, but they said a contender and Staal is already under contract. If that is the case i have no clue who the Isles could be after. I was thinking maybe Higgins, but then they said it wasnt Montreal. Of course i dont think Guerin alone would bring Higgins here, but no one said it was Guerin alone

  643. avatar DP says:

CB- -Was it a joke that this deal has been in the works for two months? if it’s not a joke then it has to be for more than a 2nd rounder–oh the suspense. . .

  644. avatar dvolek says:

don’t see mcamond anywhere at pratice

  645. avatar streit 02 says:

Joe – what would all this holdup be if it was Guerin for a 2nd rounder? Why would they even bother to pull him off the ice if that was teh proposed deal? Not discrediting your source, just doesnt make sense to me

  646. There is no way Garth takes Redden for six years, no way. We have Mark Streit already, and he is twice the player Redden is. The only way I’d ever consider taking Redden is if the Rangers send us Staal, Del Zotto, Prucha, Redden and a first round pick for Witt and Guerin. Thats never going to happen either! No way Redden becomes an Islander…

  647. avatar dmen77 says:

DP (645) – Yesterday was February 28th, today is March 1st – hence the trade is taking “2 months” to be completed

  648. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

DP – yesterday was february and today is march. 2 months.

  649. avatar SS says:

Jim: True. I just think the Isles have so little room for error that they have to make sure they maximize their return for the few assets they have to deal.

  650. avatar Priest says:

#645 – I think the joke is that is has been in the works through February (yesterday) and March (today). Took me a minute too.

  651. avatar Joe says:

    Streit,
Of course, take it with a grain of salt. I’m not sure what the hold up could be…thoughts?

  652. avatar DP says:

649, 650 & 652– thanks for clearing that up I obviously did not get enough sleep last night–feeling stupid!

  653. avatar RHL Vin says:

Post 636…..are u really serious that we don’t Staal? First off, there is no way he is coming here and secondly every NHL team could use or find a place for Staal. He is one of the premiere young two-way players in the league. The Islanders would deal anyone on the team for him except Okposo and Bailey. Those are the only two players Pitt would even consider dealing him for. These comments are getting comical.

Does it make sense to acquire Staal…….YES. It makes sense to try and acquire anyone of the three! But it will never happen.

  654. avatar StevieL says:

Report in buzz comments that it was Guerin to Montreal for O’Byrne, but O’Byrne got hurt in his minor league game last night. Anybody confirm that?

  655. avatar dvolek says:

    scratch that he is here

  656. avatar bCarey says:

seems to me like its either NJD or the Sabres.

  657. avatar The Express says:

Guerin to caps? That’s what RDS is saying.

    http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/270236.html

  658. avatar Bob says:

I realize I am reiterating earlier posts regading this season the injury bug undermined the whole season, Buffalo is complaining they have lost 194 games to injury the Isles have lost more than double that at last count. But As of late, the home games have been much more enjoyable even last night with three rookie D-men out there. I have always loved watching Bergy go and it was great to actually see him get the ice time the team has been 6-1-2 in there past 10 home games and I am becoming a believer in playing the kids trading most of the vets and then seeing where the chips fall (Tavares or Hedman) and signing some vets that might have been traded for picks (hopefully Weight) as leaders for the kids and stability in the locker room.

I wonder if they are waiting for the blizzard to blow through tonight and tomorrow. And how many of us show up tomorrow night with or without a deal having gone down. I assume no matter what the Isles are going to have to have an extra body in town soon otherwise they might have to play short again.

  659. avatar bruinsfanatik says:

Please send him to Boston! He is a class act and we will appreciate him as we had before! :)

  660. avatar RPchief says:

Everyone who attacks this gm/coach combo, needs to remember one thing. For 15 year or so we have been trying to piece a team together with vets and young guys. It hasn’t worked. Even Snow tried with Nolan. He finally decided to go into full rebuild mode. If that means the vets are upset then lets move them for more prospect and picks. This is the one method the organization has not tried. I for one would take 2-3 years of being in last with the promise of building a championship team as opposed to finishing anywhere from 8th to 12th for another 15 years. If you truely watch all the games their not as bad as the record. With DP out and all the injuries it has led us to I believe 23 one goal loses. Put DP in and where in that 8-12 spot that I was talking about. Snow has my support….Let’s Go Islanders

  661. avatar the kid 77 says:

Yes Guerin to Caps. Probably Guerin and a 6th rd pick for Ovechkin and Semin

  662. avatar Jamerson says:

DP (645), the “two month” comment referred to the fact that the deal has been in the works through February (last night) and March (today).

There have been mumblings on message boards that a deal on the table with Montreal involves their defensive prospect O’Byrne (plus picks?), who got injured in a game last night. That could, in part, explain why this is held up.

Also, I think it’s plausible that multiple teams have offers on the table. So if somebody learns that, for example, Pittsburgh offered a second, that person might mistakenly report it as a done deal, thinking they cracked the case. There are facts grounding these rumors, but the facts may differ slightly from the rumors as reported.

  663. avatar StevieL says:

Hey kid 77! Only if we get Green also. We can throw in Hilbert. LOL!!!

  664. avatar Steve R says:

I’m not sure where all the speculation is coming from… If we get a pick in the top two rounds for Bill, I’d be satisfied. I hope Garth drives a better deal but anything less than a decent 2nd would not leave me feeling warm and fuzzy… Also, kudos to the captain for stepping aside when the team needs a youth movement.

  665. avatar the kid 77 says:

    StevieL

Actually Hilbert is going back to Pittsburgh.

It is actually Hilbert and our 5th for Staal and malikn.

Remember how good Hilbert was next to Crosby? He is the final piece for Pittsburgh.

    Then here are the rest

Park for Komisarek and MTL’s 1st

Tambellini for Higgins and MTL’s 2nd

Joe Callahan to Calgary for Iginla

  666. avatar DP says:

CB re your comment that Billy is done with the islanders no matter what, I think you are right, the other night on one of the pregames an announcer asked Guerin to comment regarding the Comrie deal and it just seemed to me that his entire body language indicated that he wished that he too had been traded

  667. avatar Obs says:

    Well, still nothing but speculation.

I believe that Snow has pulled off a blockbuster and the Isles have been given a chance to sign the player to a long term deal. Snow does not want to have another “Smyth” incident. Guerin & picks for someone BIG!!

  668. avatar Priest says:

Using my Grade 10 French to translate, the link in 559 say that there is a problem with Washington coming under the cap and they are waiting/trying to come up with a solution.

  669. avatar Richie66 says:

I cant see teams making a run for the cup giving up any core players that helped them get there, it will most likely be for top prospects and/or draft picks

  670. avatar Brian says:

Is it completely out of the realm of possibility that guerin could accept a trade to a western conference power house team like the red wings?

  671. avatar Robert says:

The best part of CB’s blog, is mentioning perhaps the original deal is dead… This went from a regular trade, to a trade that may be taking so long because it may be expanded and super huge, to maybe dead… After all this time, if this deal is dead, I at least want Daniel Marios back to play along side Turgeon and get our french-canadian first line back in order….. You’re playing with my heart CB!!

  672. avatar the kid 77 says:

Guerin to Russia for Yashin–Sign me up

  673. avatar NYC Matt says:

    Joe (inside source)

Hearing people say “i have an inside source” or ” i know this player” or even better ” i used to play in this league or that”

Is probably the most annoying thing when it comes to these blogs.

If your buddy was told information that has been kept private to ALL major news reporters. Why would a minion like him know what is going on? You think because you work for the Islanders you know everything going on? That is completely absurd. Unless your friend is Garth Snow……enough!

Let CB do the reporting and speculating….. That is why we come here

  674. avatar Robert says:

I must have no life to be following this for 15 hours… I have a girlfriend that is really hot and she doesn’t exist to me until this trade is complete!!

  675. avatar beatlebailey says:

i bet guerin and picks for higgins? maybe snow is trying to work out an extension with higgins now. How does the rfa process work? imagine the deal did blow up. we would then have a disgruntled guerin who can no longer play for gordon…how would that impact his trade value?…

  676. avatar Joe says:

That newsday article doesnt make things look any better, wow.

  677. avatar The Express says:

  679. avatar Robert says:

I used to play high school baseball back in 1992 and my sources are telling me…..

  680. avatar Jon says:

i wonder if this deal is bigger than we all think. maybe weight or another player could be thrown in we arent expecting…. theres got to be a reason for the hold up.

  681. avatar DanNOLA says:

Hey Kid, if we could get Kavasha in that deal I would do it.

  682. avatar JoeRiverside says:

That newsday article is what happens in every team and every corporation for that matter. When things change and some people are out, the bitching begins. No big deal. Just newsday trying to sell papers. The article doesn’t concern me one bit.

  683. avatar mrlbem says:

Washington makes sense too in a way. Their forward lines are heavily Euro and perhaps Guerin adds an element of “going to the net” toughness that they lack. Their version of Gary Roberts. Fleischmann and a pick coming back perhaps?

  684. avatar Brendon says:

I’m concerned that if deal fell through our bargaining position is compromised as Billy staying on Island no longer an option. I know it is supposedly a sellers market but very public limbo status not good. Let’s hope working through details.

  685. avatar Islander505 says:

    Jon #682

“…theres got to be a reason for the hold up.”

That may well be the most profound comment entry on this blog that is now approaching 700 comments.
And I am not being snide….I’m serious!!!

  686. avatar isles316 says:

If the deal is to the Rangers, even with a pro rated salary, they might need to clear up cap space.

  687. avatar NYC Matt says:

Isles trade Guerin and The Coliseum to Montreal for Komisarek. Games will be played at Cantiague park next year.

That should easily allow us to sellout every game. Capacity – 35

  688. avatar Yashin for President says:

I think post 667 has some truth behind it. We need some experience for next year and Higgins would be a start. Maybe that entices Komi to come here when he is a ufa.

  689. avatar vincent says:

i have to say i think it is to the rangers for picks.

  690. avatar beatlebailey says:

why does everything the isles do have to have so much drama involved with it..geezus!!

  691. avatar DanNOLA says:

Hey, Matt @ 689, what would Montreal do with the Coliseum? I’m sure that their farm team already plays in a more updated arena than that. Maybe they could use it to show playoff games on the scoreboard for extra revenue?

  692. avatar dmen77 says:

Maybe Snow threw out the term “Stanley Cup Contender” to get more teams involved.

Montreal – “We’re the Cup Contender, the deal is being worked out with us”

Washington – “No we’re the true contender, we’re making this deal”

Rags – “Hey we beat the Western Conference’s worst team last night, we HAVE to be considered contenders now. Lets make this trade”

  693. avatar NYC Matt says:

They would lease it to the Islanders for 25 more years

  694. avatar Priest says:

Montreal’s farm team plays in Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. Everyone says it is NHL quality, but every time I go in I am amazed at how old it looks. I’ve never been to NVMC but I’d guess they are about the same. The seats at Copps are terribly uncomfortable, and all different brightly coloured vinyl (not different by sections, each seat is just a random colour)

  695. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

If all of this hype only brings back a 2nd round pick. I hate to see what happens on Wednesday.
Hopefully Snow is working on a bigger deal. If I’m not mistaken, CB did say one of his sources stated the Isles are about 90% to make a big deal. Guerin for a 2nd round pick is not that big deal.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Witt/Weight plus a pick involved in the deal.
Also, I think when Guerin was pulled out of the lineup, teams heard and got on the phone with Snow, which brought up the price.

  696. avatar vincent says:

what gives CB ? You have to know.

  697. avatar Yashin for President says:

I am starting to warmup to the idea of getting O’Byrne and picks as well. This guy is 6’6!! he has potential. Montreal is a tough place to play when the fans hate you. Get him garth! This guy is a sleeper

  698. avatar hellyeah says:

I’m trading Kate Murray with Guerin for some yummy fishsticks.

  699. avatar Jamerson says:

My guess, purely a guess, is that there was a deal in place (Montreal?), another team (Washington) made a slightly better offer but needs time to clear cap space for Guerin. If they can do it by some time later today, they’ll get him. If not, the other team gets him. That would explain the delay and the confusion.

  700. avatar Yashin for President says:

I forgot to mention, name one D prospect that we have that is taller than 4 ft! we are tiny on D prospects

  701. avatar StevieL says:

Hey we grab Avery off waivers tomorrow, and package him and Guerin to the Rangers for Prucha and their #1!!

  702. avatar isles316 says:

Washington has 1.7 mill of cap space right now. Guerin’s prorated salary is about 1.25 so that isn’t the issue. The Devils have an afternoon game today, my guess is that he is going there and that is holding it up.

  703. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

This is getting out of hand…lol.

Botts…. give Garth a call already.

  704. avatar isles316 says:

Washington has a 3pm game today, maybe they will wait to the end of THAT game to announce it.

    Weird

  705. avatar Hock says:

    Could be complicated….perhaps a three-way deal

  706. avatar Ajax says:

703 – Given that Slats “LOVES” Avery as he has said, thats not a bad idea, I’m sure he would give up any prospect for him.

  707. avatar isles3113 says:

Im figgeting like crazy over here too…. I wanna know already

  708. avatar Dreu Theran says:

My theory, for what it’s worth: there never was a deal in place. It was set up by Snow (with Guerin’s ‘okey-dokey’. “OK, you go out for warm-ups, then mysteriously disappear. Everyone will speculate that you’ve been dealt pending your approval, and my phone will ring off the hook with deals because GM’s will think they missed out.”

  709. avatar akeem says:

I think Garth is holding out making the announcement just so that CB can hit the 1000 mark for comments on this thread…

  710. avatar JPinVA says:

    1. thanks CB for wasting a Sunday keeping tabls on this and probably reading every one of the 700 (probably going to break the K) posts. Where would we be without you.
    2. thanks again to Bill guerin and his family for allowing the Islanders to use them as a gofer to fetch a pick or prospect. BG has been above this, and hopefully will get his name etched again as his reward. True class act.
    3. I really don’t want to see Brendan go, but if the Isles can package Billy, Brendan and tambellini for some of the talent that Washington has brewing in Hershey… I guess I’d be okay with that.
    4. How ’bout Bergy and Danis! I’m surprised that nobody is showing those guys any love. Bergy has been tremendouos, and Danis has a <1 GAA in the first two periods. What are the chances we see a little love from Garth for these two guys.

  711. avatar Vukota says:

You can’t trade a player you picked up off waivers untill the season is over. Plus I’ll go out on a limb and say Guerin got along just fine with Gordon whe he was playing all 2 minutes of the PP earlier in the year.

  712. avatar akeem says:

And with that, after being the first comment #711 in this blog’s history, I’m going out to buy a slurpee…call me when there’s an announcement!

  713. avatar Lawrence Teller says:

What are the odds that this turns out VERY badly? At least this isnt all happening with just moments to go on the trading deadline.

  714. avatar Pete DeBenedetto says:

If the vets are moaning about this coach…the jettison them all. There has not been a starting point for this franchise since 83-84 when they let 2 rookies crack the line-up in LaFontaine and Flatley. Since then, it’s been a little here and a little there. Gordon knows the writing on the wall. He wants t run with this NEW core, just as he is beginning in this league as well. Bailey, Bergie, Neilen, Tambellini, KO, Gervais, etc…..DP as the anchor (hopefully). He has to say to these kids “This is your team now…let’s build it together.” If free agent don’t want to come here because they think the coach will treat the vets badly, find younger FA’s that will work their tails off. I’m tired of hearing that vets don’t get their way. Guerin, you’re 38! Apparently this “Leadership” that we want the older guys to have rub off on the kids is doing no good. It’s hockey. They’ve all played the game since they were 4. The coach is the guy that will keep the positive motivation. The older guys seem a bit selfish.

  715. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

Hey Botts… Can you start a new thread, it’s taking to long to scroll down the page now…lol.

  716. avatar islesfan999 says:

Is it possibly maybe guerin and weight TOGETHER or guerin and witt being packaged together>

  717. avatar nyislanders93 says:

I was thinking the same thing with maybe Weight and Guerin packaged for a pick and a conditional pick.

  718. avatar Madchef says:

u know u have to take the Hershey Highway to get to Hershey…..I am sad to think all this hype will be for a measley second rounder. Unless for once the sun shines on the isles head

  719. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

CB, I guess with these circumstances the guidelines are out the window for the day! lol

  720. avatar Ryan says:

One little ray of sunshine in this whole confusing mess is that with the viewing numbers Chris is getting now, he can probably attract sponsors next season even if the Isles don’t decide to re-up.

  721. avatar Smokey says:

Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post, who is a good and reliable reporter, has rounded out the Caps.

  722. avatar David says:

Just got an email from Eklund, stating don’t believe CB. He said he should have been at the Islander practice instead of sitting at home.

Ha, calling the kettle black again.

  723. avatar MSA says:

    It just was announced!!!!!!

Bill G. and Sim for Parise……lol

  724. avatar Ajax says:

thats a good point brought up with the goalies, upon DPs return next season, you now have 2 backups that are developing well. I think there are about 7 players on the team right now that I would keep, let the rest get traded for whatever we can get for them

  725. avatar TuxTax says:

While I wait I will be viewing old school Islander fights on you tube. Right now I am viewing Gillies Vs. Dave Schultz. I wonder how many games Gillies would have gotten for that elbow to the head?

  726. avatar Macch says:

I’m a little upset that the Vets and Gordon are butting heads. I know being in last place doesnt help but I thought Gordon won the respects of the Vets in the locker room but I guess not.

  727. avatar isles316 says:

O’Byrne got hurt last night in the AHL so maybe that caused the big mess if it was a Montreal trade?

  728. avatar 4195mary says:

For God sakes is Danis signed? Does anybody know?

  729. avatar Islander505 says:

Does anyone else feel like this is just like sitting out a rain delay during a baseball game?

    Where’s beer man?

  730. avatar George says:

The biggest question is what are they going to do with all the picks? I say package them and get players who will hit the ice next year or the next. If they get it right we will have a soild team for years to come. Then no more BS.

  731. avatar Priest says:

wrt to the goalie situation, I would keep both of them for now and maybe try to move one of them at the draft. I can’t think of anyone who is desparate enough to overpay for one of them right now, so I’d wait it out and keep both of them for the rest of the season just in case…

  732. avatar Jack says:

The reason you’ve got so many hits is because youre linked on TSN

  733. avatar Herb says:

I’m getting sick of this just announce the trade already

  734. avatar SW says:

I’d imagine what is holding up any deal is cap issues, if the deal is for a pick/prospect. Pretty much all the top contenders would have to clear some cap space to take on Guerins salary.

  735. avatar Dissolutioned Brian in VA says:

Snow/Gordon are going to ruin this team and make it deeper joke! You cannot alienate your vets and then trade any dissenters for garbage! Yay My Isles are awesome!

  736. avatar Ajax says:

Well, Danis DID play for the Habs in 2005/2006

  737. avatar first place isles says:

trade them all. lets get the first & second pick in the draft

  738. avatar 4195mary says:

I think the leafs might start dreaming about a playoff spot this year. They got red hot about this time last year and almost made it. They might just be arrogant and stupid enough to go for it. Go leafs Go!

  739. avatar mrlbem says:

Certain vets didn’t get along with Gordon. Not all the vets. Wasn’t there just an article somewhere with Streit where Streit said he loves it here. Gordon was snubbing the vets. For shootouts, he would ignore Guerin and go with KO, Tambs, Nielsen, etc. We loved it. That’s what we wanted to see. The guys who were snubbed—Comrie, Guerin, and Campoli, to a certain extent, wanted out. So be it. But to take this and use it to make the point that Snow and Gordon must go is absurd.

  740. avatar JoeRiverside says:

    Dissolutioned Brian in VA:
You’re overblowing the “Alienating the veterans”. It is human nature. Islanders are in full blown rebuild mode. The veterans didn’t sign up for this. So they are mad. That’s life. Snow and Gordon are moving in right direction.

  741. avatar curious says:

Chris, don’t know if you’ll see this, but I’m curious. Who leaks trades? Is it the PR people? Players? Is it beneficial to leak a trade before it’s official? What’s the rational? And if it’s frowned upon, why can’t more of these professionals keep their mouths shut?

  742. avatar Isles_Goal says:

This has been some 24 hrs. Where is Jack Bauer when you need him?

  743. avatar Herb says:

Is this trade even going to happen today? Any update CB? we are suffering here

  744. avatar Will Teese says:

Im with you herb, im dying here, i need something, anything.

  745. avatar RPchief says:

There had to be backlash from the vets, the young guys have taken over. Bergie is hitting his stide, Bailey needs to hit the weights but he will be much better, Nielsen, Comeau, Hillen and if you haven’t noticed the last month or so Okposo has been awsome. Only twelve goals but he is playing like nobody who has been on the roster since Steve Thomas and Benoit Hogue.
So this stuff about Gordon would only worry me if the youngsters were saying it

  746. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

I thought instead of guessing what Bill Guerin might get in this trade why not look o see what Bill Guerin fetched when traded almost two years ago to the day to San Jose from St. Louis. See link.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2781462

To sum it up; San Jose sent a roster player, a college prospect and a first round pick that year for 28 goal scorer Bill Guerin. Ok, he is two years older now but his value has not dropped to a mere third round pick. The Isles may have to sweeten the deal a bit to pry a higher pick and prospect but it is not out of the question.

  747. avatar THall90 says:

Funny thing is, none of the other major hockey sites is closely following this, other than TSN…you’d think the press would be all over a pending trade, especially one with all of the saga and drama the last 18 hours or so….

  748. avatar Spencer says:

I caint take waiting anymore im going crazy!!!!!

  749. avatar Madchef says:

1000, 1000, 1000, c’mon guys we can do it. Were not going to find out before…lol

  750. avatar THall90 says:

And is anyone else sick of waiting for Tambellini to hit his stride, other than those two big shootout goals? He does have a sniper-caliber wrist shot, but when does he display it??? I’m cool with keeping Nielsen, Okposo, Bailey, Streit, Gervais…but I would package Tambellini and even Trent Hunter..for a big guy, he is too soft. He should be banging bodies all over the place when he is not scoring.

  751. avatar Coach B says:

I just heard Darren Drager (TSN, Leafs Lunch) say that the deal will be completed today. According to him, it’s either Washington or Montreal.

  752. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Must be (or have been) a multi-team type trade. Or Guerin is looking for the extension.

  753. avatar Smokey says:

#753 – That is reassuring because I was almost sure this deal was dead.

  754. avatar Coach B says:

Of course Drager could be wrong but he is well connected and this is most sensible thing I have seen so far.

  755. avatar RPchief says:

Guerin, Weight, Witt, Park, (and if Sutton wasn’t hurt include him) should all be gone by Wed. They are not useful any longer for our team, get 20 year old prospects or picks, as many as you can get. Thank the vets for their time and rebuild this thing.

  756. avatar Bob Bassen says:

I am guessing Philadelphia. Just because. Is there an informal wager going on yet?

  757. avatar 4195mary says:

Maybe Wash. would be interested in Joey Mac. too. Brent Johnson isn’t much of a back-up. Theodore isn’t much of a starter for that matter.

  758. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

Also, trade Weight even if for just a 3rd round pick. What are you going to do with the guy? Play him the last two weeks of the year and then hope he re-signs. Take the pick and try to lure him back at the end of the season. You can give him plenty of ice time and on the PP to boot. He may not get that opportunity elsewhere next year. He also gets rewarded with a playoff run on a contending team. Out of 16 contending teams that make the playoffs more than half could use help on their PP and Weight has put up great numbers on the PP this year. A third round pick for an almost point a game veteran with a cup ring seems to be a good deal to me.

  759. avatar 4195mary says:

    Anybody want Pock? Please!

  760. avatar BR says:

Quite frankly I think the only drama behind this situation is caused by some overzealous fans and bloggers not named CB!

People need to chill-out. A deal will get done, but these things take time…

  761. avatar Raider Mike says:

While we’re on the subject of trading Weight, I completely agree with what coral springs isles fan said. Too much is being made of re-signing him. What if we draft Taveres? Our centers are Taveres, Bailey, and Neilson. All three should be playing on the top three lines so there wouldn’t be room for Weight anyway. I think the Isles should aim for a conditional second rounder that ends up being a fourth at worst.

  762. avatar George says:

We are this way because we are looking for a great things to happen when all of these potential trades are completed. The future is so bright i’m gona need shades!

  763. avatar CG in SC says:

I admit the anticipation is killing me, though this will most likely not be a real major deal. I’m willing to bet this will be a packaged deal w/ Weight. BG alone will not merit more than a 2nd rd pick. My bet is WSH. If not Dougie, than I’d guess Witter is going w/ him. I don’t want to hear anything about Richard Park, he is far more valuable to the Isles than anything they would receive in return. Park should also be offered the “C” on his return after BG’s departure.

  764. avatar sir william says:

Does Witt get to practice while he’s suspended?…….SW

  765. avatar RPchief says:

Park will not be useful down the road, his age does not fit our rebuild….His ten goals can be replaced. He is a good guy but doesn’t fit, we need prospects and picks

  766. avatar vincent says:

BG to the rangers for #1. Straight up!!!

  767. avatar CG in SC says:

3:45pm and still no word….Washington still seems logical. After losing Captain Chris Clark to wrist surgery, Billy may fill the leadership void and is more talented offensively than Chris. The Caps are also shopping for a top 4 d-man as well, and may very well get Witter back along with Guerin. Its no secret Brendan has been unhappy with the system no one should complain about. Just pray we don’t get Michael Nylander and stay the course with a 4th 2nd rounder and a young blueliner like Jurcina, or at least a d-man w/ a lot of upside waiting to crack roster.

  768. avatar Magnus says:

What source (except for PB) said it’s an eastern team?
Still, if it’s true, I only see one cup contender in the east and that’s Boston.

  769. avatar CG in SC says:

    RPchief,

Park is only a few months older than Streit, the guy we’re building our defense around for the next 4 years. I said he’s more valuable than what he’d bring in on a trade because 10 goals can be replaced. His work ethic, his penalty kill play, and his tenacious even strength play is what makes him so valuable to us. The guy plays no matter how bad he is hurt and it took broken ribs to keep him down. If it was possible to really breathe with busted ribs, he probably would still be playing!

  770. avatar sir william says:

How about Guerin and Weight to Carolina.
Worked out for the Hurricanes last time they got Weight…..SW

  771. avatar CG in SC says:

    SW,

The ‘Canes are still fighting for a spot with their erratic play. Just seems like BG wants to go somewhere that’s a lock for the playoffs if not a projected Cup contender. Although the 2 of them would help their dismal PP unit.

PS- Always enjoy your input on Newsday forums, though no one ever like mine!

  772. avatar mike says:

Billy to the sharks….again its official…..

  773. avatar mike says:

……..uhh never mind hopefully he goes to les habs or the caps although i have seen a few reports that he isnt going there what about the rangers?

  774. avatar CG in SC says:

    The Habs?

Well, they have been dangling Smithtown’s Chris Higgins around who fits the youth movement and would be a good homecoming for him. They’re also looking to dump yet another defenseman they’ve been using on wing in Mathieu Dandenault. Must be Guy Carbonneau’s way of telling his d-men,”you’re outta here!”…..No offense Mr.Streit!

  775. avatar CG in SC says:

    From NHL.com as of 3:30pm :

TSN, citing “sources,” says Guerin knows where he’s going — but that he and Isles GM Garth Snow are waiting for the party of the second part to make its final decision to close the deal.

  776. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

Okay folks! I got it. Bill Guerin for Kirk Muller.

Chris, remember that nightmare? This isn’t going to turn into that again, is it?….SW

  777. avatar CG in SC says:

    SW,

Please…Let’s NOT go there. LOL. One of many unforgettable horrors Isles fans suffered through. If its the Habs, I hope its for someone like Higgins or Komisarek. If its the Caps, I hope to see names like Fehr, Jurcina, maybe even Steckel for his top 10 face off win %. – CG

  778. avatar CG in SC says:

    SW,

Oops. You meant Chris Botta, not me I bet….

    -CG

  779. avatar phill says:

According to Spector the deal is off.
