ISLANDERS 3, LIGHTNING 1
Tampa’s problems show all that is good in Islanders
Point Blank guest contributor
A third string goaltender who folds behind an injury riddled defense and is chased in the second period. Bad penalties late in the third period from guys who should know better. Post-game complaints from those same guys to the refs. A lackluster effort against a lackluster opponent. These are the kinds of things that you would expect to hear about the worst team in the NHL playing on a snowy Tuesday night in January before an announced home crowd of 9,808. These are the kinds of things that we may have heard about an Islander game in the late 1990s.
Not now, not in 2009.
Tonight, those were all the things wrong with the Islanders’ opponents, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Any other year, this could have been the Islanders. But it was the Bolts who whined and took bad penalties at the worst time. After a good first period effort, they folded in front of a novice NHL netminder during the second. By the third, the gap was too big to make up.
The Lightning were the picture of all the traps the Islanders could easily fall into given their place in the standings. But, to the Islanders’ credit, they looked like a team with a heart, a 60-minute effort and heady play. They looked like a team that wasn’t ready to throw in the towel on their three-game win streak or the season.
In the first, the game was pretty evenly played and it wouldn’t be out of the question to say young Yann Danis bailed out his team on a couple of occasions. The Islanders looked good, but they seemed a step behind. More than once, Danis stopped his opponents from point blank and the game went scoreless into the break.
The second period was the total opposite. The Lightning looked like they had already clocked out for the night and let the Islanders go to work on their own third string netminder, Karri Ramo. To make things worse, Ramo seemed a bit shaken by the barrage – the Isles had out shot Tampa 12-6 at one point during the period - and subsequently allowed three goals in a three and a half minute span. The Islanders looked looked like sharks who smelled blood in the water and charged head on forcing lots of offensive zone turnovers. Before the smoke cleared, Trent Hunter, Mark Streit and Radek Martinek had all tallied and Ramo was sent to the showers.
That would be all she wrote. The Lightning power play looked like a running gag all night, but managed to find the net in the third when Vinny Lecavalier fired a great shot past Danis from the top of the right face off circle during a 5-on-3 advantage. Martin St. Louis, a star and veteran for Tampa who should know better, took two penalties in the final five minutes and that was the game.
It wasn’t the best performance the Islanders have had during their now four-game win streak, but it will do. They looked a bit sluggish early on, but managed to take full advantage of the chances they were provided in the second. The team played solid, mistake free hockey and got some help from the post late in the second period to keep the Bolts off the scoreboard. That’s really all you can ask. The contrast between the two teams really was stunning. Neither has a whole lot to play for at this point (save for John Tavares and pride), but one checked out early and the other came to play all night.
***
Broadcast Notes: What’s the deal with Butch Goring on the Islanders’ telecast? The guy adds some great commentary, but every time he’s on camera he’s all alone in the stands! Of course, tonight’s attendance was low due to the weather, but please find someone for Butchie to hang out with. I feel bad for him all alone out there in the 200s. It’s like he’s being punished.
Mad props, as the kids would say, to Howie Rose. He gave a nice shout out to Point Blank during the third period in regards to the epic Bourne-Gillies romance. Islanders Point Blank, now Howie Rose approved!
***
Injury bug Streits again: There’s your pun-that-makes-everyone-groan for the night. During the second period, Mark Streit took a hit along the boards and came off the ice holding what appeared to be his shoulder. He would soon leave the ice and didn’t return. On the MSG broadcast, it was reported that it was being called an “upper body injury” by the team and Streit would be evaluated further tomorrow.
***
Now that’s a captain: After Tim Jackman knocked over Tampa netminder Karri Ramo in the first, Bolts captain Vinny Lecavalier stepped right up to challenge him. The collision seemed to be accidental and no penalty was called, but seeing Lecavalier tussle with Jackman was a testament to what a captain should be. The fight wasn’t anything to remember, but you can bet Lecavalier’s teammates won’t soon forget how it.
***
So there it is. Four game win streak and a nice effort on a snowy night. Next up for the Isles are the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Have a good night, drive safe and as always, your comments are appreciated.

this team better get their act together and starting losing again, or we again will pick 5th in a 4 horse race
-
I couldnt catch the game, does streits injury appear to serious?
-
9 points in 5 games. Can’t say loving this team isn’t challenging. I think we need to recall Milbury to start signing free agents for our 08-09 playoff run and first round exit.
-
Awesome writeup, Kev. Really great job.
Streit: chances are when someone is going to get an evaluation next-day, that it might be more than a game or two. But let’s not assume any more and hope for best.
-
Pinch me, I forgot what a 4-game win streak feels like.
Re: the Plus/Minus discussion in the previous thread. For those who haven’t checked it out, consider the stats at Behind the Net: http://www.behindthenet.ca/
There are some in-depth creative stats that take some exploring, but there are also stats like +/- per 60 minutes (On+-/60), and Corsi numbers (shots on/against when a player’s on the ice, rather than goals which are subject to your goalie’s ability), etc. They help get past the flaws of traditional +/-.
Little overwhelming at first, but worth poking around.
-
I was talking to Butch during the 2nd intermission. He seems like a down to earth guy. Does he usually sit in sec 218
-
?
-
Ironic, isn’t it. In each of the past several seasons, we would go through a ten game losing streak that would just kill the season. This year, we’re gonna go on a ten game winning streak that’s just gonna kill the season.
-
The guys looked sloppy in the 1st, as Butch pointed out (and Jaffe seconded), but the 2nd period was niiiiice. .500 for the last 35, here we come!
I’ve never seen Butch at the NVMC. It sure looked empty tonight. Streit’s injury can’t be too bad since he shot the puck HARD shortly thereafter. My guess is, he might be out 2 games or so.
Off to Florida… it’s the annual Dad’s Roadtrip weekend.
-
LOL mrlbem, that’s a good one!
Good article Kevin.
I am torn between “Woohoo, Go Isles!”
and
“Yikes, don’t lose Tavares”I’ll take the win.
-
Of course the Isles win. When we have a chance to get Tavares, we start to win…worst luck in the world. Watch, we will miss out on Tavares…you will see…
-
Oh come peoples, if this team was going to go on a winning streak, it was going to be now. Atlanta, Florida, Tampa, Florida, Tampa, LA? What are you honestly expecting, 0-6? If anything, feel better knowing that the Isles are not the worst team, are headed in the right direction, and yet will still likely end up in 30th.
Don’t worry, next week they play the Atlantic, where they’re 0-for-Anyone not named the Rangers. Then we can go back to Tavares talk.
-
Great job by Kevin the PB fill in!
And I am loving the winning, personally. Let them always play hard, let the wins come when they can manage it, and let
the chips fall where they may. -
Who would have ever thought that the Islanders winning would make me nervous. I can picture it now. With the 5th overall pick in the NHL draft the Islanders are proud to select…. who knows but at this rate it wont be Tavares or Hedman. On the other hand though it is definitely a great thing to watch these kids develop. I am 100% behind this rebuilding and since I grew up watching this team lose, I can deal for another year or so.
-
Made it there and back in one piece. More like 6,000 I would guess. The roads were fine , the game was so-so and I got home in time to see the Rangers lose. Not a bad night at all……SW
-
Great ass on that Ice Girl !!!!..SW
-
Last comment. What was the deal with Comrie celebrating like he scored the second goal? I didn’t get to see a replay but it looked like Streit shot it straight in. They announced it as Comrie’s goal. Did he tip it or what?….SW
-
I thought that too, SW… I was confused by that as well. But, later on, Jaffe pointed out in the replay where Comrie immediately pointed back to Streit and said “your goal” to him. (They changed it already, BTW… I saw it pop up for Streit on my fantasy team
) As far as the celebrating goes, I guess Comrie was just really happy the Isles got another goal lol? -
I was there tonight too. Realllllly thin crowd. The lightning really shot themselves in the foot in the third otherwise this game might’ve turned out very different. Even with the wins, which are OK with me, I still think we’ll get back to our losing ways soon enough. We have had a really easy schedule lately. Just glad to see the kids showing up and playing hard, and the vets increasing their trade value.
-
I agree in how great it was to see a guy like Vinny Lecav protecting his teammate. Jackman dind’t do much wrong based on replay but still that is the kind of character this Islander team needs. Not many guys who have worn the sweater in recent years can be bothered to protect their teammates. Hopefully that will change soon.
I am stuck with the Lightning broadast these two games due to regional coverage laws.
I think the vets continue to increase trade value. Perhaps Snow should hurry up and move some of them because the dumbest thing this team could do is go on a feel good winning streak (hell we all enjoy the wins) and lost out on a chance for a franchise guy like Tavares.
-
Streit’s injury is dissappointing, but on a brighter note, Danis is playing phenomenally. He looks like he is getting more and more comfortable, and it appears he can hack it at this level. As for the Ranger game, it is good that Atlanta won, so we are still four points behind them. I really do think we are showing tremendous signs of progress, especially Okposo who really is becoming a star like Goring said. As for Comeau and Bailey, they are looking great! It would be wonderful to see Comeau – Bailey – Okposo as a future second line and a first line featuring Petrov – Tavares – Free Agent…don’t you think? Third line could even be Hilbert – Nielsen – Hunter for all I care…there is promise with the youngsters.
-
Justin…Okposo is a 1st liner. Hilbert has improved his play this year but should never be more then a 4th liner. That being said he is UFA and he’ll have a hard time keeeping even the 4th line job with all the forwards coming ready in the next two season.
I like a third line of Bergenheim-Nielsen-Hunter.
4th we need an enforcer.
-
Not the best game but for a tough trip to the colesium I will take it. Danis has been playing great and should def get to play til he loses another game. You saw the real Isles fans in the stands tonight braving the elements for a last place team. And this win was great because Atlanta beat the Rangers as well so the Isles did not gain on them..
-
Howie giving the shoutout to Justin Bourne’s blog entry here may well be the end of the Gillies/Bourne romance.
The Wet Dream Destroyer ONCE AGAIN jinxed any chance at a Danis shutout when he closed out the 2nd period by saying…in his own I don’t care about jinxing things way..
“And now the Isles will go into their 3rd consecutive 3rd period with a shutout on the line”.
And sure enough….end of shutout.
Please Howie….just TRY to play along and KEEP YOUR GD MOUTH SHUT about shutouts!!!
Please?
Just once? From two time zones away.
-
Regarding Butch lets start with, yes he always sits there. Second I sit behind him and we know when he has to go on the air when they bring him the Mic and everyone leaves him alone, except tonight when some people moved down and he kept having to get up for them. I attend all the games and the crowd for not the worst weather was just about the thinnest I have seen without 6-8 inches on the ground. It was so quiet tonight that we got shushed at tonight for shouting too loud.
No Streit scored his goal after the injury it looked more like a stinger.
We better lose a couple on the road otherwise there goes Tavares & Hedman.
Our silver lining. -
Islander505: Howie has nothing to do with what happens on the ice. Get a grip. Might as well start playing with voodoo dolls and praying to God.
-
great pic on the ice girl, nice comment SW. we have to go on a losing streak now. guerin left but not sure if he came back and i guess streit did as well so maybe we can get some losses in that stretch. i hope for a speedy recovery. okposo can go on the first or second line becuase it doesnt matter. whatever the chemistry is will depend on where he goes. idc if he is on the fourth line as long as he is putting up points. why is there no delay on school!
-
Well, can’t lose ‘em all…
-
Kevin, you are doing a great job. Welcome.
-
LOL … that was a good one 7th woman.
I just hope that 2009 and 1990 … are not synonymous with what could of been.
1990 we drafted Scott Scissons #6 and the Pens got Jaromir Jagr at #5 b/c the Isles decided to go on a feel good winning binge towards the end of the season .. including the last game which vaulted them past the Pens in the standings.
-
19 Isle…and into the playoffs! It’s not like all they got out that winning streak was a worse draft position. That was very exciting, especially when the broadcast feed cut away to the Penguins game. Uwe Krupp blasted one from the point (he was with the Sabres), the Penguins were eliminated, the Islanders were in, and the cameras cut to the Islanders going absolutely berserk in the locker room.
-
Really nice of the Islander management to come to all of us “300″ residents and invite us to move down to the “100″ and “200″ section. They did this 10 minutes into the first period.
Lightning are a real mess. Are they going to get out of paying Barry Melrose not to coach (if that’s what he did) because of his big mouth.
Lecavalier can play for my team any day of the week, standing up for his goalie.
-
Anyone thinking that the Islanders’ recent string of victories puts them in danger of falling ahead in the Tavares Sweepstakes…the second-half schedule in February is brutal. During the week beginning Sat. 2/14 they play five games, and three games in four nights beginning on the 25th. Tough teams, too, all but the Toronto game on the 26th are against playoff teams.
Oh, and Kyle Okposo is one of the strongest Islanders on the puck I’ve seen in a long, long time. If he goes into the corner, more likely than not he comes out with the puck. He’s definitely the goods.
-
I was flipping channels between the first and second and saw a wee bit of the RAG$ WaMu Theatre event prior to the opening faceoff.
Glenn Healy was one of a few players holding court on the stage, and started dissing the Isles a bit. I think that as he started doing that (asking the crowd if they rooted for that “other” NY team” and then the crowd started hooting and hollering —– and the producer cut this short to go back to the arena.
I know Glenn played for 4 or 5 years at MSG, but his best days were arguably on Long Island.
Also, wanted to wipe that smirk off Grave’s face when the Potvin “Suc*s” cheer went up during his speech……..
If Graves is such a great guy, he could have mentioned that Potvin was a great player or something like that……….I mean if you want to make “No More 19-40″ as your rally cry – then how about no more Potvin Suc*s…….cheers…
Also, Rag$, these are games you are supposed to win. What a joy (for me) to watch them lose. Albeit, would have been sweeter if Kovie potted that empty net attempt…….but those were two points the Isles needed last night……….and got courtesy of the Rag$ !!!
See “Gravy” and “Heals”, dissing the Isles is bad karma. Think about that next time you open your RAG MOUTHS.

For those losing sleep over our draft position remember Jeff Carter was taken 11th overall and Scott Scissions was taken 6th overall. The draft , while not entirely a crapshoot, is a calculated gamble. There are VERY few sure things and I’m not sure Tavares is one of them. If we finish with a top 5 pick I’m reasonablly certain we’ll end up with a solid top six forward or top 4 dman down the line. In the meantime I’m happy to watch the kids put forth a strong effort and TRY to WIN.
-
Playoffs?!?!?!?
LMAO!!!!!! Lets get real on that…. ( I am loving the 4 game winning and I am not hating at all ) but we are still have the worst record in the NHL and..8th Florida Panthers 50 24 18 8 56
15th New York Islanders 50 16 29 5 3732 games left and we are 9.5 games behind ( that is assuming Florida loses 9 more then the Isles w/o OT points )
Its a great run and the team is responing and next year with the system intact, then we can look at getting back into the greatest time of year, Stanley Cup playoff hockey!!!!
-
JayK … I remember that and the Buffalo game very well … I was working my first TV job sitting in the control room all happy … and that was my point … back then … the Isles had something to play for … and Maloney I think was in the Isles locker room celebrating like a lil kid that the Isles clinched the Playoff berth
-
Glenn Healy has always been a jagazz!! I hate his smarmy comments during a TSN telecast @ the Coliseum v. the Leafs. We always beat them anyway @ the Coli! Adam Graves is another Rangers Joke anyways! He was a good player don’t get me wrong but I guess the Rangers will retire every player from the 1994 Team. Next up it will be Eddie Olcyzk or Stephane Matteau!
Look at the Isles with a streak going! -
Tampa may have the right idea; I’d pay Barry Melrose to stay away from me.
I’m starting to not care about wins and losses this season. I care that we won a game behind some great efforts from the kids. They’ve really been stepping up over the last few weeks, and it gives me more confidence in the future with every passing day. I put zero stock in draft position, I just hope they don’t trade the pick again this year. Let’s concentrate on taking the best player available when we draft, and not get fixated on a single player.
-
Re: James (13)… “If anything, feel better knowing that the Isles are not the worst team, are headed in the right direction, and yet will still likely end up in 30th.” You nailed it. I just don’t get how alleged fans of this team continue to be either upset or nervous about their team WINNING games.
But considering last night’s results included wins by both the Isles AND Atlanta, with a Rangers loss thrown in, that seems like the trifecta to me.
Keeping fingers crossed on Streit…

And, if you adhere as I do to the build-from-the-goal-out idea, Hedman is a great option. Especially when you consider that the ‘crapshoot’ aspect of the draft applies even more to apparent high scoring forwards than to solid defenseman. Also, that photo of the ice girl really is a jewel. For some reason, I keep checking this site for new comments about every 25 seconds.

I think MSG+/- is putting pre-recorded crowd shots into the production because there were some crowd pans on the broadcast that makes the coliseum look a lot more full than it really was…I could be wrong, but everyone is saying that the place wasnt even half full and thats what i saw on tv during regular play. It seems that the broadcast booth is putting a veil over the home viewers eyes…check it out next time.
-
A real captain, indeed. When was the last time Guerin fought again?
-
Rocky45..
“Might as well start playing with voodoo dolls and praying to God.”
Yeah…I do….what’s your point?
-
#44 Tim:
Guerin’s last fighting major was March 21, 2008, vs. David Clarkson of the Devils, which was a rematch of their fight on 12/29/07. He had 3 fighting majors last season.
-
I’m definitely not losing any sleep over the team’s draft position. Quite frankly, any one of Tavares/Hedman/Paajarvi/Cowen/Kane/Duchene, among others, would look good in an Isles uniform. This year’s draft is hardly a 4-horse race, as someone claimed earlier…
-
(#43 TuxTax) – they let people from the 300s move down closer to the ice, so maybe it looked “more full” because there were 6000 people in the 100s/200s and few left in the 300s. Still, anything is possible with computer enhancement of broadcasts. Maybe those were virtual (computer-generated) fans in the stands!
-
AAAAAAAAH – will you people PLEASE stop bringing up Scott Scissons and the 1990 draft! The problem wasn’t losing out on Jagr, it was passing up on Brodeur. If Devils fans were actually clever I’d expect to hear “Scottie Scissons” chants at the Rock whenever they played the Isles. (Hell, I would do it if the situations were reversed.)
But in a huge draft discussion, it’s like being stabbed in the eye with hot needles to see Scott !$^&#&*^! Scissons’ name. Happy thoughts, people! Heck, we got the first overall in 2000 when we finished fifth-to-last, so even if we do move up one or two notches, all is not lost. It’s nice to see some pride out there in any case!
-
Us late-to-the-party wannabe diehard Islanders fans don’t even know who Scott Scissons is. Did he ever amount to much?
-
my comment wasn’t meant to be taken literally, more of a we always seem to be one spot too good in the standings, and therefore one spot outside the projected impact/stud players
-
Haha, CGI fans, now that would be something the Islanders would do! Anywho, glad to see a string of wins being put together. Kyle didn’t score, but I still think he is the best player on the team right now. Talk about stepping up your game…who or what gave him that kick in his A$$? He has been improving week by week since they played Minnesota when he came back from the IR. What an all around complete player, strong, smart, positionally sound. Me likey.
-
Danis played excellent. He has got a good glove and made some sick point blank saves. Hopefully they give him some more playing time.
-
bcarroll25 – Ah, I get it and totally agree. Sorry for jumping the gun!
-
CGS – Scissons was a center, a huge scorer in juniors. Drafted sixth overall in 1990. Played exactly two games in the NHL, had one shot on goal, and vanished forever.
Drafted seventh? Darryl Sydor. Eighth – Derian Hatcher. 14 – Brad May. 19, 20, 21 – Keith Tkachuk, Martin Brodeur, Bryan Smolinski. Second rounders include Jiri Slegr, Felix Potvin, Doug Weight, Geoff Sanderson, and Mikael Renberg. Slava Kozlov (who had the shootout winner for ATL last night) was a third rounder. Sergei Zubov was a fifth, Robert Lang was a seventh, Petr Bondra was an eighth. Perfectly decent players Valeri Zelepukin and Sergei Nemchinov went so far down they don’t even draft there anymore (#221 and #244).
Now, of course the Isles couldn’t be expected to draft all of those players. It’s actually surprising that they managed to acquire a few of them later. It just hurts that they didn’t get even ONE of them. The entire contribution of their 1990 draft class was 10 goals, 22 assists, and -30 in 195 games – and all four of those players were forwards.
In fact, let’s just say that 1990 was an off year for the guys, and never speak of it again.
-
nightfly – just using Scissions as an example. He’s certainly not the only one I could have picked. My point is simply that this team, both fans and players, should be endorsing a culture of wining not losing. The draft is deep enough that we can add an impact player even if we miss out on Tavares, an 18 year old boy who is not a lock to save any franchise.
-
Goaltenders don’t become great by sitting on the bench. The more they play, the more experience they get. Danis is the perfect example of it. Exellent work by the kid. Kyle is growing every game now. Looks like he works on a new thing every game trying to perfect it. Now he backchecks and steals pucks! Nielsen=really good playmaker. Jackman just works his @ss for 100% of his icetime. I also like that Gordon can play his 4 lines with equal time in the game. Let everyone show their williness to stay on the team.
To all, who’s already scared to loose Tavares: There is still A LOT OF HOCKEY to play. Keep the Faith!
To Kevin: You belong on PointBlank. Looking forward to read more from you. -
Agreed that Danis has been playing much better… calm and cool, making some good saves. But I also think a lot has to do with Gordons adjustments to the system as he mentioned. Not taking anything away from Danis.. just the Isles playing more as a team.
-
Play Yann until they lose. Hey, might be another week or so…….
-
Vincent Lecavalier has come so far since he was drafted. To think that Tampa actually considered trading him to Jersey because he wasn’t “progressing”. After he was stripped of the captaincy before they won the cup, he elevated his game to unbelievable heights. Now he not only scores 100 points/season, he fights, hits and dominates almost every night he plays. He’s terrific. I hope the Isles draft a guy like that one day (Tavares?).
-
polishprince – it’s cool, and I understand. That particular example just pushes my buttons, especially now that I live in NJ and get to think about it every time a Brodeur jersey goes past.
-
#46– you made my point wonderfully. Thank you.
In conclusion, Guerin doesn’t give a damn. If he did, and he was a respectable captain, he’d have wiped the ice with Mottau’s face.
I can’t wait til we trade these terds and I can watch the games again without yelling.
-
If anyone has kept up on their reading, there are 2 ELITE prospects this year: John Tavares and Victor Hedman. Then, there is everyone else. Check 10 different websites and the scouts all have the other players ranked in different orders. Translation: these are all good prospects but only two players that have the “special” tag in the scouts eyes to be a franchise changer. So no matter how big a fan you and I all claim to be it would be a huge travesty for the Islanders to start winning a little too much and lose out on one of these two stud players. I’ve been an Islander fan long enough to see that this team whe they’re good they’re not good enough and when they’re bad they’re just not bad enough. They’ve picked either 1st or 2nd only one time since 2000.(DiPietro) Check what Pittsburgh got the draft at those spots for a couple straight years and you will quickly figure out why they are such a great young team. That’s what we need a top 2 pick. THATS HOW YOU REBUILD and THATS THE TYPE OF PLAYERS IT TAKES. Not the number 10-15th picks in the first round.
-
It is nice to win a couple games-don’t get me wrong. I’m enjoying watching them right now. And even with this 4 game win streak our record is still god-awful. Nothing for nothing-we haven’t exactly beaten the Red Wings or the Devils or the Sharks so let’s enjoy the better play while it lasts. We are about to return to reality on this road trip.
-
And for the record: that ice girl’s ass is dope
-
Glad to see mention of Goring’s work. The Isle’s telecasts have become first rate. Jaffe is tremendous. Howie Rose is great and expanding Goring’s role is a winner. They are a fun, knowledgable and are becoming more comfortable with each other every game. CJ Pappa has relaxed and improved steadily since the start. Good to see Stan F. back. He adds some old time credibility. Pass on the kudo’s to all!

Steve Schrippa at Adam Graves night! HAHAHA…made my night…
