A chance to be heard at Hempstead Town Hall
The Town of Hempstead will vote to adopt the scope of the environmental studies for the Lighthouse Project in a meeting on Tuesday at 10:30 am at Hempstead Town Hall. The studies have been completed and will be submitted to the Town soon after the adoption of the final scope.

I used to work for the Nassau County Legislature, where they had similar meetings. I’d like to make a suggestion….Anyone who goes (and I might) please be professional. If you intend to speak, prepare something. Don’t wing it and end up humming and hawing. If public speaking isn’t your forte, then just go in support.
Dress professionally. If you want to wear a jersey, maybe wear a shirt and tie underneath. I think we could make a great case if we showed up and wowed them, instead of giving them something to roll their eyes at.
-
Good advice,i live in canada or i’d be their for sure hope there’s a great turnout BE HURD LONG ISLAND
-
Express is absolutely right – the Town of Hempstead stereotypes all Lighthouse supporters as “Islanders fans,” and playing into that is the worst thing we could do. Let’s be professional and show our support. You know I’ll be there and speaking.
-
Great comment Express. The worst thing anyone can do is be “that guy”.
-
who the heck holds a town hall meeting on a Tuesday morning? People have jobs man. The only people who could attend this are senior citizens and toddlers.
-
If I was going — and I was planning, but I can’t — here’s roughly what I would say.
The Town of Hempstead has been the site of tremendous vision. It’s the place where Charles Lindbergh got into a plane all by himself and launched himself into the sky, on his way to Paris. It’s the place where Robert Moses sat on the dunes near the ocean, sketching out the park that we now know as Jones Beach. It’s the place where William Levitt turned a potato field into a housing development that welcomed home the GIs who won World War II, and changed how we live forever. This board can take another step in that illustrious history by showing itself to be a body of similar vision in granting its approval to the Lighthouse.
Note: not a word in there about the Islanders.
-
#6 … you are correct, and there is a reason for it.
-
Wear a suit and don’t mention the Islanders. I agree with Nick–don’t play into the stereotype of “I only support the project because I’m an Islanders fan.”
-
Johnny Islander- What is the reason for them holding the meeting on a Tuesday morning?
-
I don’t know if that’s the reasoning here, but historically meetings are held in the morning to keep attendance down. Have you ever noticed that every public meeting the MTA runs to announce a fare hike is at an awkward time during the day?
-
10am when people are working. This is unreal.
-
I wish I could go – I basically do accounting for over 200 small mom and pops in Nassau county and business is bad for most, if not all of them. I could say how Long Island needs a new boost in it’s economy and how beneficial the new arena would be – as well as the convention center, hotels, and sports medicine offices… I wish I could go.. but I am in Seattle.
-
I am off tommorow but of course have a damn appointment that I cannot change that is work related!!! Its a shame this meetinng is during the day but it makes sense from what Nick says with the attendence.
-
Another suggestion from someone who currently works in local government: Not sure how the ToH does things, but although the public is usually allowed to speak at these meetings, you might want to make sure you don’t have to sign up in advance to be a speaker. Annoying, maybe, but something that is useful in keeping said meeting from turning into a free-for-all.
And I would take the suggested dress a step further to say don’t wear a jersey no matter what you’re wearing under it. Also, whatever any of you do, do NOT start any chants – especially “Let’s Go Islanders!” Don’t laugh. Someone will be tempted to start something, and that’s the last thing you need. Avoid the stereotypes at all costs, and good luck tomorrow!
-
i was planning to go for awhile, but sure as hell wasn’t planning on waking up with the flu this morning. ugh, i can barely move. i doubt i’ll have the energy to wake up that early but for those of you going, give ‘em your 2 cents and express your support. Please don’t boo Murray, either. That was fun at the game but this is a Town Hall Meeting, beer won’t be served. Be respectable.
-
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the TOH town hall is accessible by LIRR?
-
It’s not that close – you could grab a cab from the Hempstead LIRR station if all else failed.
-
JayK(#7),
Charles Lindbergh, Trans-atlantic flight.
Robert Moses, greatest visionary (in NY) of the 20th century.
William Levitt, shook the convention of urban and rural development.
Charles Wang, gave us hockey in mandarin chinese, and is gonna build luxury apartments and a movie theatre on Hempstead turnpike…You can only hope that nobody has a full bladder when that speech is made.
It’s great news that the project is moving forward, and the net affect should be quite positive for the town. But I don’t know if I’d be erecting statues of chucky chinese just yet. It would be pretty funny (..and not “ha ha” funny) if he was doing 8 to 15 in a federal pen during the construction.

Nick Classic (18)
Thanks for the suggestion. I’m coming from Massapequa and my car is broken, so I’m going to look into the LIRR/Taxi option.
-
I don’t advocate this but wouldn’t it be more effective to slip the TOH members envelopes filled with unmarked $100 bills? Or get some incriminating photos on them? New York isn’t as corrupt as Louisiana, New Jersey or New Jersey but we did elect Eliot Spitzer as governor and senators like Hillary Clinton and Wang’s buddy Al D’Amato.
-
The Express,
THe best option from Massapequa is taking the train to RVC. You can then take a cab or a less expensive option, the bus. The bus leaves every 15 minute or so to the hempstead bus hub, which is not that far from Town Hall. -
Stumpy-
Thanks for the advice. My brother (who has my car) may be able to give me a ride, so I’m hoping it won’t be necessary. But thanks for the input, I still may have to do that.
-
You guys are the voice for all of us Canadian Isles fans! Make us heard! Thank you from a distance, Chris for keeping us in the thick of it. (local media is so Leaf obsessed it gives me nausea!)
-
From a corporate point of view the real angle here is to create jobs in a lousy economy. CB had some very good contacts and they all said this is Long Island’s very own stimulus package. That is something that should be stressed, creating jobs and making an impact on the quality of life on Long Island. If a fan does talk about the Isles, maybe talk about all the wonderful charitable contributions they make to help Long Islanders and the community. Wish I could attend, best of luck tomorrow!
-
I wish i could go, but i don’t come home from school until next week… But seriously like everyone is saying guys, be professional, this isn’t the NVMC we have to show them we are not just fans but concerend residents with logical reasons besides just maintaining the Islanders for this project to be built.
-
I hope everyone that is going gets thier point across professionally. Of course work gets in the way of me coming but I would come from West Haven,CT. Hope everything goes well guys and represent us well.
-
of course you have to mention the islanders – there would be no lighthouse project without them – sheesh – as well as the fact you have a developer willing to invest in this area in the worst economy since the great depression – it is that bad folks and will get worse over the next 3 months..i work in the markets and we still have more losses ahead. Any smart politician should be all over this as a way to inject life in the local economy.
-
Could they really ignore the potential job possibilities associated with a project of this magnitude? Good luck from all Islanders fans in Nova Scotia. Stay professional.
-
why is it during work hours???
-
Good luck, people. I hope that they listen to you in person a bit more than they did with your letters.
Nick, best to you especially………SW
-
Another shout-out from another Canadian Isles fan.
Good luck to everyone who goes tomorrow, and certainly to you Nick. -
Thanks, everyone, and especially you SW. I’ll be there tomorrow with my cousin, representing a house full of voters who want the Lighthouse. All of us who can make it tomorrow carry the voices of the others, and we won’t forget that.
-
People should start Facebook groups!!! Thats the best way to get out the word
-
Guggs (I’m sorry if I’m over, but I’m going to sleep now) – there’s a group called I Support the Lighthouse at Long Island for just that purpose.
-
Hope a lot of you go. Too bad it’s when people are working. There’s strength in number! Please–spread the word to other Isles fans that don’t read the blog or message boards!
-
Good Lord I wish I was on LI to attend that! Kick some butt tomorrow everyone! MAKE US PROUD!
-
To everyone going tomorrow….good luck, especially Nick. Let your voices be heard, especially to Murray.
-
There is new blog post about the meeting tomorrow on Newsday.com
-
I really, really wish I could be there.
This was just announced with so little time, there was no way for me to make it.
I hope everyone who does go makes us all proud! -
SIR WILLIAM!!!
What the hell is up with this comment? (#31)“Nick, best to you especially………SW”
Ya know….I am out here (two time zones away) and felt the earth move, in a fault free zone, at about 6:54PM MDT. (Might have been the oversized green card waste-dress delivering me my 4th draft pick in a 9 deep draft).
And now I see that you gave our boy Nick some props about the LH Project at EXACTLY that time?!?!.
After all the crap you’ve been delivering on Newsday and now here?
Against the LH Project?
You come up with that comment on the eve of the most important meeting in “The Criminal” Wang’s journey toward economic freedom?
The guy that you have always insisted (Newsday and here) should be in jail?
Whoa….sigh….deep breath.I have always loved your banter Sir William……..but you are F’in scaring me now.
GO NICK AND THE LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT!!!!!
-
“I have always loved your banter Sir William……..but you are F’in scaring me now.”
IOW (in other words)…..
You’re gonna have to do something more to convince me that you have come over from the dark side.
(A night at an Irish Pub in Queens might work….maybe……your tab).
-
Good Luck Everyone!!!
Working … so can’t make the trip out today … but I’m with ya all in spirit.
Maybe Gary (that hockey guy) Bettman will make an appearance in support of the Isles.
-
Nick (#11)
Regarding having town meetings during the day:
I’m not sure how the Gov’t does biz out in LI … but the ONE thing they do right in NJ … is have town meetings in the Evening. At least the town I live in does anyway.
-
Good luck guys. I’m stuck at work. Make us proud
-
Why in God’s name are they having a Town Meeting in the morning? I’ll tell you why!!!!!
Because many people like me who can not afford to go into work late or take a day off!!!! Why could this not take place at 6pm or 7pm?
Town Meetings are for the people!!!!! Well the people have to work!!!!! Again the TOH doing things *** backwards.
-
hope all is going well at the meeting. please send up an update as soon as possible. i really wish i was there.

I wish I could be there! I really hope there is a good turnout, we really, really need this!
