LOS ANGELES at ISLANDERS, 7:05 pm
Nate Thompson out another 4-6 weeks

by admin on February 10th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

The Islanders have announced that can’t-catch-a-break Nate Thompson will be out another 4-6 weeks with an injured shoulder. Mark Streit is definitely out of tonight’s tilt against the young, skilled and energetic Kings - another model for your NYI.

I will be away on another one of those pesky assignments. Kid Kevin of Barry Melrose Rocks will be at the game in primo seats I stole for him. After the game, he’ll post his observations and Part II of his look at goaltending options for the Islanders. I’ll be back tomorrow with a series of potential Pulitzer nominees…CB

Game talk here. Queens/Lighthouse chat below. Trade talk below that. We are the world.

instead of tambellini (dumb) and sim (dumber) how about bringing trevor smith back or that mclean kid.. at least those kids have a nose for the net!!!

  2. avatar Ryan Tendrup says:

I’ll be at the game tonight. Looking forward to seeing this kid Doughty..

  3. avatar BSTFAN says:

These freakin islanders need to stay healthy. Their going to ruin the Sound Tigers playoff run…

  4. avatar Phil says:

Is there an open forward spot? Didn’t Nate Thompson miss the last game when Bergenheim stepped in?

Good catch, Phil. Thanks. Still recovering from my last trip, I guess…CB

I really do want to see what this LA Kings team has on it. I haven’t got a chance to watch them at all any time recently and they do have many skilled young players like Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson, Patrick O’Sullivan, and Alexander Frolov. If the Islanders need a model on how to rebuild through the draft, they should look to the LA Kings.

  6. avatar felix says:

Guess good ole Nate is out pretty much for the rest of the season. that is rough. hopefully next year is a better year for him.

  7. avatar isles72 says:

kings are absolutely a model to follow

  8. avatar kevin says:

what are the kings missing? they have a great young corp. on both sides and even goalie. and i am being serious too. i am surprised they are not higher in the standings. i guess they are missing that top guy to lead them. and i mean top top guy. i hope jeff gets on the scoresheet. he may have to do that and even drop the dukes. anything to show he wants to be on this team. i know thats what i would do. get points, and to show your determination you are willing to step in a role. i know on my brothers junior team, they dont have a set fighter so when someone hasnt been playing much or is brought up or may get scratched the next game the drop the gloves to prove there worth so they have a better chance of playing. most of the time, the coaches take that into consideration and you keep playing. just an example.should be a good game. i notion that this is what the isles need to model. they have great prospecct depth meaning that they have a lot of future 2nd liners and 1st liners and 1-3 dman but like i said i think they are missing the top guy we can get in this next draft.

  9. avatar kevin says:

o and prediction? i say we lose 4-3. would have been nice to have a fighter to take on ivanans. i thought the isles should have gotten him in the offseason but isnt doing as good as he did last year. guy is a monster. like 6’2 and 260

  10. avatar MSA says:

Yahoo sports is hyping the #2 goalie “controversy.” It quotes Go-Go as suddenly saying Danis has been more consistent. I would agree, but maybe they should have let him keep riding his run to see if he could keep it up. Not enough starts to through away J-Mac, in my opinion, although Danis has been great.

    CB any thoughts?

With proper respect to Joey and Yann, really tough for me to get caught up in calling this a controversy. Kid Kevin will have Part II of his goalie take later tonight…CB

  11. avatar cgs878 says:

How about something ridiculous like changing goalies whenever the team loses? That might be fun.

  12. avatar nyislanders93 says:

In that case were going to be changing goalies quite often.

  13. avatar redzi says:

CB, any chance we deal Sim, Colliton, Tambellini, Sutton and JMac for Doughty?
    JUST KIDDING.

Looking forward to seeing a team from the west, where I think the hockey is typically faster and better.

  14. avatar Brian G says:

Just put Sim in the minors and bring up Trevor Smith

  15. avatar MSA says:

Thank you for the reply Chris.

  16. Kevin #8: The Kings’ goaltending situation didn’t really settle down until around Christmas, which is when they got hot. The list of goalies they’ve tried since 2001 is abysmal.

While this isn’t (yet) a true goalie “controversy,” it could be a nice battle — one that will suffice for “interesting” during a 30th-place season!

  17. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Is tambellini ever going to be given a shot again. He looked like he was starting to turn a page before he got benched again. Same with bergenheim. Why is he always out of the line up ( i realize he is back now). He may take dumb penaltys but he makes plays as well

  18. avatar kevin says:

thanks lighthouse. i guess a healthy dp gives us an advantage over other rebuilding teams. i think we have more ( and better ) prospects but not entirely sure.

  19. A big “if” on that healthy part, but yeah — a healthy DP would be a huge step. Now about that cornerstone Doughty-like defenseman we need next…

  20. avatar James says:

i hope this isnt a repeat of the kings game from last year at home. that was by far the most boring and uninspired hockey game i have ever watched in my life.

  21. avatar kevin says:

how did he not save that! jesus.

  22. Why, it’s a new-NHL goalscoring explosion. Ha.

  23. avatar kevin says:

which involves russian players like malkin who know how to speak english: we shoot more, shoot everbody. sorry but this game is boring. jackmans goal was beast though. i need another big hit or fight or goal. comeua had a big hit on brown earlier. bruno and hillen actually look good though.

  24. avatar Mikey says:

sim and tambellini are wasting space and have no place in our future. bring back smith who just might.

  25. avatar cusi says:

can the islanders hold them in the 3rd period?

  26. avatar BrassBonanza says:

Witt looks steady tonight (or at least he is loging a lot of ice time). Could he view this as an audition? I wonder if this LA club would be willing to part with one of their crafty young forwards (O’Sullivan would be nice) for a veteran D-man like Witt, to try to really push for the playoffs?
    Maybe just wishful thinking…..

  27. @26: Yes, wishful thinking…

Although a player who has taken too long to develop/failed prospect might be in the ballpark? O’Sullivan could conceivably be in that category in a few seasons if his production doesn’t tick up more. Not yet, though. Still 24.

  28. avatar JOE RVC says:

    ill take danis over mac

  29. avatar nyislanders93 says:

I’m happy to see the Kings get the win tonight. It would have been better if they got it in regulation but I’ll take it. As of right now the Thrashers are up on the Lightning 2-1 with 10 mins left in the 3rd. Lets go Thrashers!

  30. I’d rather a healthy DP than both of these guys.

I liked the shooters that Go-Go went with. Nice young crop. Could care less about a loss in a shootout. Got a point, keep the losing streak alive. Let’s get to that number 1 pick.

  31. avatar dmen77 says:

Entertaining game, happy with 1 point instead of 0 or even 2 for that matter.

Just hope Atlanta hangs on and we’ll be 5 pts back with 2 less games played.

I’m not worried about getting any points tomorrow night. The Devils made the Rags look like chumps last night and I don’t think they’ll have any problems with us either.

  32. avatar beatlebailey says:

well had an experience between the 2nd and 3rd period tonight that sums up the season so far…some guy is walking up the stairs and yaks all over the steps, luckily i was just out of splatter range can’t say the same for for the dude behind me. apparently he had some chili, hopefully it wasn’t the wendy’s chili. on the bright side it only took the coliseum staff 30 minutes to come clean it up. BARF!

  33. avatar Rob says:

geez, as if the Kings don’t have enough to look forward to with two young stud defenseman in Jack Johnson and Doughty, both of which were taken top 5 picks in their respective draft years, they have Colton Teubert (6’4, 210lbs)13th pick overall and Thomas Hickey 4th overall in 2007 waiting in the wings..!!
The young forwards aint bad either led by Kopitar..

  34. avatar JOE RVC says:

hey stupid put guerin in the shootout

  35. avatar Rob says:

lets get to that trade deadline already, then to the ping-pong ball day, and then finally fast forward to the draft… those are the only three days that matter….. lets land a few more prospects at the deadline… we could be looking at:
    2 first round picks
    4 second round picks
2 third rounders…. where’s the draft party at??? the last official draft party I went to at the Coliseum ended up being a multiple homicide by Milbury…. he killed the organization that day by trading Chara and the #2 pick (Spezza).. as blood splattered all over us innocent bystanders watching the jumbotron!!

  36. avatar frankie says:

hey easy does it there. i dont suspect they we’ll have to deal with any more of that nonsense. weve finally moved up in the world and have a more than qualified GM running the show now. im sure Snows got a game plan…..to fast track is to Kansas City

  37. avatar steve says:

i dont usually comment, but after reading through so much info i had to say thanks
