NEW NOMINEES FOR THE ISLANDERS HOF
Larry Brooks of the Post, Paul Kelly of the NHLPA

by admin on February 1st, 2009 at 4:16 pm

With the participation of Players Association chief Paul Kelly, Larry Brooks of the New York Post underlines the absurdity of the Collective Bargaining Agreement clause that shuts the Islanders out of revenue-sharing.

Read the story. Write letters to the Post thanking Larry for standing up large for your Islanders a few times recently. In this view, better than making a star out of a needy Toronto sportswriter.

as much as larry has driven me nuts in the past, he has stood up for the isles the past couple of weeks with this article and the one about the holiday classic. i’ll send a note to him thanking him. it really is absurd that the isles don’t get any revenue sharing. hopefully this changes asap.

I disagree with this line of thought. The isles should be marketing into NYC, not retreating to the Island. They should not be rewarded for making a business decision of limiting their fan base. Plenty of people from the Island live in Manhattan and the Isles have made no effort to reach out. How hard would it be to have express bus service from mid town to/from Isles home games? They do not even try and no mass transit at the Lighthouse. They could do much more to reach out.

  4. avatar Mike from Queens says:

Marketing the Isles in NYC? Waste of money. No real audience, no way for them to get here via mass transit, and no real reason for a Ranger fan to turn suit.

What’s one reason for a NYC hockey fan to come out to the Island instead of getting on the E to MSG?

    CB;

It stands without a doubt that Bettmen has to be the worst commish in pro sports history. He’s had Minnesota, Quebec, Winnipeg and Hartford all move to other markets on his watch.

He’s lost a TV deal with ESPN which is the most watched national network in prosports in favor of shoddy VS. Lots a people in the country don’t even get VS.

Not to mention two lockouts with one of em canceling an entire season.

It’s, in a way, to see the same flawed thinking that has infected Wall Street doing the same to pro sports league. The owners have all the power and Bettmen’s extistance is not to grow the sport but to maximize profits by union busting. The players union has little to no power now and the league is wrought with cheap shot artists and concussion victims.

    It’s become a laughingstock.

THe owners don’ really seem to care about the game. Just using Machevellian tactics to line their pockets. It’s gotten ridiculous.

There are plenty of Isles fans in NYC but the team makes no effort to reach out to them. Put some buses, trains in place and we will come.

Chris, a suggestion for a good future story while we’re talking media good guys and bad guys…
What was the worst example of press box misbehavior by a member of the media in your Isles years? We’re talking the best combination of loutishness and unprofessionalisim that led to an ejection…and name names!

  8. avatar Dommy says:

he’s not gonna name anyone neil

  9. avatar Peter Puck says:

I am glad to see someone who agrees with me that a lot of the blame lies at Bettmans door. Not only the stupidity of running an All Star game on a channel that half the country cannot get but the singular inability to conduct due dillegence in respect of potential awnership which has been the downfall of the Islanders for their entire existance. Add to that the failure to negotiate a CBA without having a lockout. Its all very well for MLB to have a lockout from their strength but another lockout in hockey could be the end of the sport.

  10. avatar cgs878 says:

I can see Bettman’s point. Why give a team that plays in an area with a wealthy fanbase some revenue when they’re ailing? They can just raise the ticket prices instead of getting the CBA money. That’s a better way to make up the shortfall.

If you mean places like Queens and even Brooklyn, why dont you go look at the schools the Islanders are visiting? They have had posters and the like on the LIRR. Things like that are already happening. But if you mean NYC as in Manhatan, that is just pointless. You just dont stand in front of MSG trying to get people to go to Islanders games.

  12. While I have a biased rooting interest in the Islanders’ success, I just can’t thank Brooks for the rare occasions when his relentlessly pro-NHLPA shilling accidentally aligns with the interests of the Islanders.

Since the lockout, it’s honestly hard to take any league-issues piece he writes seriously, because it’s always framed with a remarkably single-agenda bent.

  13. avatar Jethro09 says:

Shocking that of all people in the media, Larry Brooks is the Isles’ biggest advocate. Everyone else slams the organization every chance they get and Brooks, the ultimate Rag homer, is the one standing up for the Isles and their fans. Thanks Larry. I won’t utter another bad word about you again.

  14. avatar Joe says:

CB, any chance the Isles pick up McIver off waivers?

  15. avatar kingbet123 says:

The piece of the Post yesterday wasn’t bad. While I’ve been critical of some of the stupid things Brooks has said, at least he’s not blind to the issues facing the Isles and the flawed thinking of the league.
