NO DOUBT GARTH SNOW THOUGHT
IT OVER FOR, OH, ABOUT THREE SECONDS
As tempting as it may be, the Islanders are not going to stand in the way of the Rangers’ potential acquisition of Sean Avery via re-entry waivers.
Since they have the NHL’s worst record, the Islanders have the first pick of all players placed on waivers. You could make the case that, if Glen Sather and the Rangers are convinced Avery will make a huge difference, the rival Islanders should get in the way. After all, if the Red Sox tried to acquire a starting pitcher in late August, the Yankees would put in a claim and kill the deal. The Yankees would probably do it even if, as the Islanders are today, they were in last place.
But the Avery case is far different.
Sean Avery, even at 50% off, is signed for 2008-09 plus three years. If he was signed just for this season, the Islanders – with no intention of ever playing Avery, nor probably Avery for them – could pick him up on waivers, try to trade him or let him sit.
With three years left on his deal with Dallas, no way. Avery will have an immediate positive impact on Broadway. His presence will help New York hockey grab some needed press attention as most reporters fall all over themselves at spring training. The Rangers will win games and make the playoffs. They’ll have to decide what to do with him when October comes around, but that’s something they don’t have to think about right now.
There’s about a 5% chance another NHL team will stun the hockey world and grab Avery on re-entry before the Rangers. But it will not be the Islanders.
P.S.: Earlier this season, while Avery made his tour of this area in his three games with the Stars, some Rangers broadcasters – who never complained about Sean when he was a Ranger – all of a sudden had a lot of bad things to say about the guy. If he returns to the Blueshirts, then what will they say?
Comments. Guidelines.

I don’t have to read the article to know that it’s going to be good. I can tell by the photo alone.
Hubba Hubba
-
Hey CB,
How did you get that picture of Avery??? I didn’t know he dyed his hair blonde… -
I’d grab him and ask for a six rounder. Half price and just a sixth rounder. This way, Sather knows no one is going to grab him. He’s safe, and it only costs him a late round pick. I know these things don’t happen but it knda makes sense.
-
The Islanders don’t need the trouble. But if Prucha is waived as Brooks said he might be Garth will have to decide if Prucha can regain his rookie form.
-
Sean wishes he looked that good
-
Sean’s a puss. That article you posted earlier this year w/Avery, Shanahan, and Snow made my stomach turn.
He’s a pig and ultimately, he’ll get what he deserves.
-
Nice Cuthbert pic CB
-
Coach B (post 6), if Prucha is waived, he will be Islander property faster than you can say “Kansas Ci…”.
-
I much prefer this picture over anything you can find of Avery. Thanks Chris!
-
sather must be really desperate for something to jumpstart the rangers if he’s going to grab avery off of waivers. the guy is a ticking time bomb. i get a bad feeling that he’s going to pull a simon (or worse) one of these days. i don’t think he belongs in the nhl until he gets his head fixed.
-
I thought you couldn’t trade a player you picked up on waivers? At least for that year…..
-
I’m gonna have to disagree with you CB. I think the Rags picking up Avery will lead to a major implosion. Without Shanny in the lineup anymore, there won’t be a vet to curtail Avery from his antics on and off the ice. Shanny was his watchdog, knowing him from his days in Detroit. I can see Avery getting under everyone’s skin in the dressing room and there won’t be anyone to stop him. Drury, Gomez, the Queen don’t have the ability and guys like Dubinsky and Callahan are too young. Mark my words, if they pick up Avery, watch that team sink like the Titanic. The more I think about it, the more I think Garth knows what he’s doing.
-
Elisha Cuthbert that is all I can write on this matter, I liked Jokinen better than Avery.
-
derek – there have been lots of whispers that the rangers players were very happy to see avery go this offseason so i think you’re right. just not a bright idea to bring him back.
-
Is it true that Prucha may be put on waivers? Not that he is a god send, but I’ll surely take him at the cost of no assets and see if he can regain that goal scoring touch. He seems to be a possible fit in the Go Go style. Wait, I feel like last year again when we were looking for “Nolan type players”. Sorry, had to throw that in.
-
Oh, and I have to comment on Elisha. Man she’s amazing. If you haven’t already seen it, I highly recommend the movie “The Girl Next Door”. It isn’t the best movie, but watch with no volume, you’ll enjoy it.
-
I think they should thwart the Rangers. they have done it to us on draft day in the past by trading up to screw us. I say do it and let him sit and then place him on waivers after the trade deadline so they cannot get him.
-
CB… for the first time I have to disagree with you … Derek is absolutely correct … It was well known that Shannahan is the one who held Avery’s leash … and without the dog handler there (no real locker room leadership on the Rangers now) … Avery will run amok in that lockeroom and spoil what chemistry they have there.
Look how much better Dallas has been without Avon … Also … I think Avery with the kind of players that were on the Rangers in his tenure was more complimentary … No Jagr, Shannahan etc … I hope they grab him and choke on the salary and shame he’ll bring to that organization.
-
I buy it for the articles. Wow, what a great picture CB. As much as I am for giving anyone a second chance I wouldn’t want this guy anywhere near my team, especially if I were the Rangers. The risk far outweighs the reward I really doubt Sean will instantly make them serious cup contenders.
-
Nice distracting pic. For a minute I forgot what blog I was on.
If the Islanders were in a playoff push, then I think Garth should make a move, but otherwise, no. Another Islander blog that I read wrote about picking up Avery to have someone to protect players like Okposo, and Bailey. Avery in an Islander uniform could help in that area, but Garth needs to address the enforcer issue in the off season–Jackman, Thompson, and Fritz don’t cut it. I appreciate Jackman’s and Thompson’s efforts in fights, but Guerin fights better than them. The Isles need another Eric Cairns. Number 1.
-
How can one guy be so bad.
He has talent.
Does anybody know what he has done that has upset his teammates so much.
Plus everybody needs a second chance.
He has had help.If the doctors have found out what is wrong with him, maybe he is a changed man.
Maybe all he needs is medication.
I would definately talk to the doctor, before I passed on him.
-
Does that mean Scarlett Johansson is on waivers too?
-
Pittsburgh should take a long look at claiming Avery. Replace the Ruutu presence they lost. Take focus off of crosby and let him play. Let other teams run around after the guy while your stars shine. They could benefit from Avery’s presence. Plus, if you believ he’ll help the Rags exponentially it’s a strategic block. He doesn’t fit on alot of temas but he fits perfectly on Pittsburgh imo.
-
I don’t want that wierdo disgracing the Isles uniform.
-
Ummm… why the $#&@ is Sean Avery even being talked about here?? Do any of us pick up poop on the ground and play with it as well?! This really angers me. F Avery and F the Rags. I hope the Rags get him back and speed up their collapse and fall out of the Playoffs. Where is Mike Milbury when I need him!?!?!?!?
-
If Prucha is put on waivers the Isles MUST!!!!!!!!! grab him. Every games he has played he skates hard and gets alot of chances. CB can you look up Pruchas stats to see how many games and points he has this year.
-
Prucha always seems to score vs us.
-
Lat visit Avery had at MSG I think he had a scuffle with some guys from the Rangers org in the hallway.
I think Avery burned a bridge there. Given that Sather wasn’t that fond of the fellow I doubt he goes back there.
Personally I hope the Raggies do pick this guy up. He’s the ultimate locker room cancer.
-
CB – Garth should call Glen and ask for Prucha in return for not grabbing Avery.
-
Mario – Go to nhl.com, espn.com, yahoo.com etc, you’ll find prucha’s stats there. lol
-
CB could it be possible the islanders pickup avery to trade him to the rangers for prucha?
-
The last thing we need is Elisha duking it out in the stands vs Hilary
-
Kind of ironic that the second story after the new guidlines (rule 7..don’t post Ranger topics) is a Avery story
-
if the rangers waive prucha they are a bunch of idiots…..if the rangers waive prucha and we don’t pick him up we are even more of an idiot. As a matter of fact….if the rangers waive prucha, and we pick him up, we can afford to keep either weight or guerin.
-
Since CB brought Avery and the rangers up, to me its a panic move, MSG NEEDS a Rangers playoff run, while the Garden is full in the seating bowl, next time your there look up to the rafters..there are an awful lot of empty suites these days with more sure to come as contract terms expire. The fact MSG pregame is from a former luxury box shows that the suite sales are down.
They need to fill that building as best they can until they pray LeBron comes in 2 years, and they need that playoff money. Hopefully they settle nicely into the old Bruins model, where a string of round two playoff runs are acceptable.
They may even welcome the negative press and buzz Avery brings (it will be great to watch Trautwig do a 180)
-
If you ever post a picture of Avery, make it one from the movie “Rocket: The Maurice Richard Story” where he (as Bob Dill) twice gets knocked out with one punch by Richard. Great stuff. I think I’ll log into Netflix instant access now. About 55 minutes into the film.
But the Islanders should stay away from it.
-
Elisha Cuthbert is so hot in that pic I almost passed out. CB can you replace your pic with hers please?
-
Sean Avery = Chris Simon: No thanks on either one.
-
I wouldn’t give a half eaten snickers that was found in the urinal for Avery. The guy is a d-bag. End of story.
-
I had no IDEA Sean looked that good in DRAG! No wonder he did so well at Vogue!
-
where do brookes say prucha could get waived
-
Where are the pics of half naked men? Throw us chicks a bone, will ya?
-
I just want to comment that it’s become like a common thing for the Rangers to pick up another team’s sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about.
-
CB, If Prucha gets waived do you think Snow takes a chance with him? I mean the guy has scored 30 and would fit in our system. I would hope he would be all over that.
What does everyone else think?
-
I think isles would be foolish not to pick up prucha, I wasn’t to pumped about trading for him, but if we can get him for nothing why not take a chance
-
Rangers looking like a desperate team right now, they will probably pick up Avery, would be great to see them slide to 9th at the end of the season. They play with no passion. The Devils outclassed and outworked them tonite. It is still painful to watch Paraise at times, I always think he could have been an ISLE! If Milbury picked him, I would have forgiven him for all his other mistakes! But passing over Paraise was the icing on the cake!
-
Anyone notice that Newsday (owned by Cablevision) today had a half page story on the Rangers (owned by Cablevision) while ignoring the only team based on Long Island? Wonder why?….SW
-
The Isles are so far from a playoff spot, they shouldn’t care who the Ranger$ get to improve their team. The Isles trying to grab Avery so the Rangers don’t, would only hold water if both teams were in playoff contention.
-
It would be worth picking up Prucha just to not hear rosen saying his name anymore! I really hate the rags and i love seeing them collapse.

Avery cleared waivers and the Rangers got shut out.
Looks like the bubble is going to be big this year for the post season. Should make for some amazing drama down the stretch.
-
If the Islanders have a chance to get Prucha, stats be damned, they must pick him up. He would thrive in the right system, and away from the Garden, IMO.
-
It was sometime last week when talk about the Rangers picking up Avery came about. Last Friday the Dallas Stars ripped the Rangers apart with a 10-2 drubbing. That Ranger team quit playing, and all those players were well aware that Avery’s name was being talked about coming back to the big apple. He will destroy that team in my opinion.
-
Botta taking shots at other teams announcers, yet gets all defensive when someone asks him to put away the Islander pom poms?
-
Well, all I have to add regarding Avery, if he’s learned a lesson from all that he’s done and truly wants to play hockey, then my guess is..he’ll do just fine, but if he’s just saying these things because he knows everyone wants to hear them and then gets back out and stirs the pot again outside the NHL family with his big mouth, then he will get what he deserves, released/fired! whatever it is they can do legally with him. I truly believe the NHL will keep a close eye on his actions.
But please do not bring him to the Islanders..we have enough goin on these days. -
I was patiently waiting for this topic to come up. Finaly, I can scrach my tang:
By listening to NHL on XM I have learned that Rag’s fans are looking for more Heart and Passion for their team. They want to fix that by grabbing Avery???!!!
Just a tiny reminder: When Avery was asked why he was choosing Stars over Rags, his answer was that Stars is just better team and organization…
So my answer to them: sure! Sign him up. Better yet – make him your capitan! And kill all the class your team has left.
It is amaizing how people quickly forget things.
I’m glad that you,CB, didn’t forget. On your opinion that Isles will NEVER ever even consider to bring this clown in, I’m with you on that 100% -
Dallas just assigned Avery to the Rangers AHL affiliate Hartford today. Cant wait for Jackman to light him up next Wednesday.

If it weren’t for the beef between Snow and Avery, do you think he would have pulled the trigger on this one?
