NYI ACQUIRE SJ’s 09 FIRST ROUNDER
Trade Campoli and Comrie to Ottawa

The Islanders have acquired San Jose’s first round pick in 2009 in a trade with Ottawa. The Islanders have sent Chris Campoli and Mike Comrie to the Senators. In addition to the late first round pick, New York gets veteran forward Dean McAmmond.

(I write this from Laguardia Airport, while a rough draft of “TRUE VALUE: Chris Campoli” sits in my laptop. That’s life.)

There seemed to be a lot of smoke revolving around a possible trade of Chris. I wrote a week ago of the possibility. Billy Jaffe had openly speculated about a Campoli deal on MSG Plus.

Then earlier today an NHL source told me that Chris had asked to be traded. By the time I could confirm the request, the deal was done.

On one hand, the NYI lose a developed NHL dman who will be 25 in July. On the other, they got more back for Campoli and Comrie than some would have thought. I would have liked to see the Islanders pick up a prospect in the deal, but you can’t have everything.

Chris Campoli wanted a change of scenery, so you can’t get everything you want in return. I’d give Garth Snow a B on this deal. Much will depend on the development of Jack Hillen, a similar puckhandling D.

For sticks and giggles, I’ll post that Campoli True Value later tonight. I’ll have more as details roll in. CB

    Bye Chris, hello Dean.

  2. 2 Alex Kinkead

Sad about Chris, Happy about Comrie and a getting 1st Rounder

  3. 3 UNH Steve

Wow another first rounder. Sweet. I liked Campoli and thought he played well but we have guys on the AHL team who might be able to let us forget about him. Comrie seemed to be on his way out anyway so I’m not too suprised or upset he’s gone. I’m extremely curious though why Campoli might have asked to be moved. Any ideas CB?

  4. 4 Jimmy Sparx

Of course Garth will be ripped for this, but Camps wanted out.

Overall this is a very good trade.

  5. 5 kevin

    2 firsts
    3 seconds
you wanted a rebuild so WAMMO
campoli wasnt doig well so i get it. good trade. im so excited i may have a sleeve of chips o’hoy

  6. 6 dalcy

who the hell does Chris Campoli think he is!?

  7. 7 guerin13

very surprised that chris wanted out but i’m not disapointed. i didn’t like his lack of hockey sense and i think it was best for both parties to part ways. good riddance to mike comrie. very happy to pick up the second first rounder. good job garth. mcammond is a ufa after this year.

  8. 8 Chris A

Good trade I liked Campoli but o well 2 first round picks in this draft should do well

  9. 9 DanNOLA

I’ll take it. Man, didn’t see this coming.

  10. 10 Lee

Campo wanted out…let him go. He wasn’t that good to begin with.

Gotta love the amount of First and Second round picks this year.

  11. 11 Candyman

    5 picks in first 2 rounds…that’s pretty legit….

  12. 12 Eye on the island

Besides the obvious disappointment in not seeing campoli develops into a top 4 d-man, getting any value for comrie makes this an obvious win.

What I would like to see garth do now is parlay this late first and one of our seconds into a top flight youngster or an earlier first.

One last note on chris- despite his obvious potential, he has never shown it on a consistent enough basis- so if he never fully develops this could be a steal.

Also, anyone have any info on mccammond?

  13. 13 Marc

Do the Isles’ get anything for losing Hilary Duff?

  14. 14 Islesfan4lyfe

The draft picks mean NOTHING if you don’t trust who does the drafting. Neil Smith drafted Kyle, Snow drafted Bailey. I’ll bet you anything that Smith would’ve kept the 5th pick last year. I hope Snow does well with his picks because there is A LOT riding on his decisions.

  15. 15 go orangesleeves

campoli is an over achieving 6th rounder. I believe he is what he is. Pretty good- but not very good. Comrie just took up a sweater. he has absolutely no desire. McAmmond is just there to even salary cap plus/minus. The last pick of the 1st round is a good return for campoli. Freddy IV will step right in.

  16. 16 stevedepot

Campoli was someone I thought could be part of the solution.
But if he asked for a trade then so be it. Cannot blame Garth Snow on this one.
McAmmond is not much but a toss away from Ottawa as he’ll be looking for a new team if not retiring this off-season.
The big thing here is getting someone like Comrie off the team because his bad habits are too impressionable for our developing youth. Infact, I have to say, good job Garth and I’ve been critical of him all year.

  17. 17 frank nyc

wow that came out of nowhere. hmm kind of sad to see camps go but if he wanted out he wanted out. dont really care about comrie but hey we wanted first rounders and we got another. lol Unfortunately its sanjose’s first so its gonna be a low one. I would bet money they use that first and a second to move up a bit. The rebuild is in full effect.

  18. 18 mm30

4 picks in the top 35…i’ll take it.

  19. 19 LOUDVILLE330

I see this trade as really showing the future. Trading Comrie and Camploi and know the Isles end up having 5First/Second Round picks is awesome

  20. 20 UNH Steve

Mccammond looks like a really weak throw in. He has like 12 points this season and is 35 years old. Hopefully he’s a ufa after this season

  21. 21 Otter

Just waiting for the Snow to swap that #1 for multiple lower picks. At this rate, the SJ pick could end up being the last in the first round.

  22. 22 isles99

im a little dissapointed in that we got a 1st round pick that is extremely late. a pick in the late teens would have been much more satisying. i would have really liked the original deal if snow got a decent prospect back but you cant have everything like you said. glad to see comrie go but i am really curious why campoli wanted out.

  23. 23 mjisles

i like it if the islanders can turn the sharks pick into something… maybe witt and that pick for van riemsdyk and lupul????

  24. 24 Rick from LI

I have a feeling Campoli was unhappy with the prospect of playing second fiddle to Streit for the next 4 years. I really think Chris believes he can be a number 1 power play quarter back and wanted a chance to prove it. I liked Camps, but he was very inconsistent and was worth giving up for a first rounder. I am glad My last memory of Comrie in an Isles uniform will be him dropping the gloves, as opposed to making a sloppy turnover that lead to a goal, wait…

Either way, I’ll take the first rounder and the roster spot for another kid. I am assuming they have no choice but to call a center up now since the only ones left on the roster are Bailey, Neilson and Hilbert.

  25. 25 michael

    at least comrie is gone..

  26. 26 Isles316

I think this is a great trade. Campoli is not worth a 1st rounder in my opinion and we got one. A late one, but we got it.

  27. 27 AM

To have gotten anything for Comrie is a good move by Snow at this point.

  28. 28 Doug F.

I’m thinking down the road Snow will use the pick he got today and maybe one of his 2nd round picks for something else. Also, I think the Isles are going to make a strong push for one of the free agent d men…and hopefully they’ll sign Matt Gilroy from BU.

  29. 29 TuxTax

Rick LOL!!! Comrie gone is a dream come true!

  30. 30 Macch

Great move… Campoli was really leveling off. We have enough undersized puck moving defensemen and Gervais has looked better as of late. I give Garth an A. To me its Campoli for McAmmond and a 1st

  31. 31 TIM

Ottawa’s first round pic has bin confirmed it was originally SJ pic good move Garth people have bin bashing Campoli for a long time now they get their wish….no crying

  32. 32 kevin

    that pick gives us options
    1) keep it ad draft someone.the only person i know who is going that late is taylor doherty, he is a dman and is 6′8.
    2) use it in a trade for a prospect
    3) use it in a trade for a better pick
isles99 had it been a pick in the late teens, it would have cost us more, overall this was a great trade

  33. 33 Lance79

I think with both Hillen and Campoli around there was a redundancy factor that needed elimination and Campoli was moving way too slowly towards his potential as a PP quarterback - does anyone wonder if this now opens up a spot for Hedman?

  34. 34 Isles19

I think this will allow us to move down further into the 1st half of the 1st round and pick up another Blue chip prospect

  35. 35 Terry

Love it! I was a Campoli fan but when your in full rebuild mode this makes sense. Campy wanted out,Comrie was already a foregone conclusion. A first rounder(although at the bottom) gives Garth flexability. Keep it and another young stud joins the mix. package it and this draft is looking sweet. I’m beginning to think Snow is a better GM than goaltender. Now if we can only keep Hillary Duff…

  36. 36 derek

Good deal on the 1st Rounder. Garth should’ve tried to get Mike Fisher, and threw in a 2nd Rounder. No Biggie. I see this 1st + a 2nd being traded for either a higher 1st or a legit player.

  37. 37 Michael

Not to sure I like the fact Campoli requested a trade from the Island. This is a guy we took in the 7th round and molded him into an NHL d-man, we stuck by him through his development but what can you do. If hes unhappy then its the best thing for him. I for one am gonna miss Comrie, he brought some much needed offense to the Isles and im sure he’ll do better in Ottawa. I think he would of stayed in Ottawa over the Isles when they originally signed him, but Ottawa couldnt afford him.

  38. 38 Lance79

One more thing - I guess this means the Schenider trade opened the long awaited floodgates on trades and priced the market - and man does it ever look like a sellers market!

  39. 39 Vukota

    Tim it’s San Jose’s pick not ottawa’s

  40. 40 Dmarie

Well I don’t mind Comrie either, but I thought Campoli was a decent player, kinda sorry to see him go. And as it states he wanted to go, he put himself on the bus, it wasn’t like he was forced to move on, so can’t blame the guy for wanting a change. I can’t wait to see what this team shapes into after alls said an done.

  41. 41 mm30

How can anybody not like this trade?

You traded a #5 defensemen who is 25 years old and will be eligible for free agency by the time the Isles contend and a small 2nd line center at best, who is having a piss poor year for a 1st rounder.

Garth did a great job here.

  42. 42 nightfly

Even if it’s the 30th pick that’s good value for a thrid-pair guy and an underachieving center who was blocking players who need development time. McAmmond will hopefully be a good trooper and the Isles can use the last 25 games to really showcase some of the kids. Maybe we’ll see Ben Walter back up here?

(Or maybe he’s hurt and I missed it, the way I somehow forgot that Sutton was out for the year.)

  43. 43 mrlbem

How is the order of the San Jose draft pick determined? Based on where they finish in the standings or how they do in the playoffs?

  44. 44 Isles19

We will be in very good postion to move into the 1st half of the 1st round now to add another blue chip prospect

  45. 45 Lawrence Teller

I am really quite thrilled with this - I would think the goal has to be to take this pick and combine it with one or two - or even all the second rounders and get a second pick in the top 10.

I think this is a great trade, especially if what CB wrote about Campoli not wanting to be here is true.

  46. 46 Jerry

Don’t understand the positive reviews of this deal. We traded our second best offensive defenseman, who had a very inexpensive cap number, for what is essentially a second round pick.

The Snow continues to fall in my eyes.

  47. 47 ed

Is there any value for McAmmond? Can we trade him also as he is a veteran and maybe we can get a 5th rounder for him. I assume he was just a throw in anyway. I am surprised that Campoli asked for a trade. I hope there aren’t other problems that we are not aware of as I thought Campoli was a pretty straight up guy. It will be interesting to find out. I think Gervais latest play made Campoli expendable. Good trade.

  48. 48 kevin

yeah jerry, if campoli was so good then why are his numbers not where they should be, besides he requested the trade. the jerry curls continue to get in my eyes

  49. 49 ISLESFAN999

Pretty good trade. Next up is Guerin and maybe Witt. Maybe even martinek?

  50. 50 kevin

hey we lost in this trade! we should have traded our 1st to ottawa for mike fisher and then have duff and underwood mud wrestle. that will bring the fans back!

  51. 51 Carmine

Wow the great news just keeps coming. First hope for the lighthouse and now Comrie is out of here. I would give Snow an A for this trade. Another 1st rounder is great.

  52. 52 Vukota

There was a reason why Campoli was drafted in the 6th rd!!!

  53. 53 TIM

hey vukota i’m reading it use to be SJ’s pic can you confirm

  54. 54 jisles

Great mvoe by garth. I am in the majority when I say I would like to see the pick parlayed into a trade for a young proven forward or dman that is of all star caliber. lets wait and see. Comire was a waste and campoli was just terrible on defense. I cant believe I am saying this but it sounds like the islanders have positiioned themselves to turn this thing around quicker than I expected.

    1. They are getting the first pick. Tavares or Hedman hopefully Tavares

    2. They have a ton of cap room to make a run at free agents

    3. They have 10 picks in this years draft that Garth can parlay into trades for proven nhl all star caliber players

    4. TOH passed the environmental review and it took a step forward.

So all these things are being put into motion. Its the best news all season. Keep up the momentum boys and lets get back to being contenders again. Lets go islanders!

  55. 55 BR

Interesting move. It clears out Comrie (and, hey, it was obvious that the team wouldn’t want him back), and if Campoli wanted out then he got his wish. The Isles have a lot of similarly talented D as Camps, so I don’t think this is a huge loss. As someone else pointed out, he probably saw Streit being cemented in as the PP specialist and knew the writing was on the wall.

Perhaps this clears space for a Gilroy signing in the not to distant future?

Someone asked who would be brought-up from the Bridge to replace Comrie. McAmmond is a center.

  56. 56 AM

I don’t think people realize how little Mike Comrie’s value is right now. Ottawa fans seem to think that they are now going to trade Comrie for something bigger. Have they seen him play lately?

  57. 57 Brian G

Seems like they could have got more for Campoli, its hard to find puck moving offensive D-men - Did Snow even shop him around the league? Seems like a quick decision for a last place team

  58. 58 nightfly

Jerry - I think it’s relative. Campoli is only the second-best offensive d-man on the Isles because they’re the Isles. It’s like being the second-tallest guy at a jockey’s convention, it doesn’t mean that you should work on your post game and join the NBA. The Isles traded an easily-replaceable commodity (Campoli, a third-pair guy on a legit team) and a player who wasn’t helping and wasn’t signed for next season (Comrie) for the chance at a far more valuable player. I don’t see how Snow can be faulted for that. I mean, we all thought it was a gag when DonK first posted the news, that should explain our positive feelings.

  59. 59 kevin

“We’re excited that we are able to add another piece to our rebuilding plans while bringing in someone like Dean who will provide additional depth for our team,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “The Islanders organization would like to thank Mike and Chris for their contributions both on and off the ice over the past few seasons.”
    -from the islanders website

  60. 60 Vukota

When did Campoli become Potvin? Am I missing something? A 25 yrd old who might become a 3rd or 4th D-man at best is exactly what he is.

  61. 61 mm30

    Hey Jerry,

17 points is all you need to know…Okposo is a better offensive defensemen than Campoli.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful to anyone, but Chris Campoli is at his peak a 4th defensemen. He’s hurt all the time and he is a minus player.

  62. 62 Isles Fan in Ulster County

Glad to see Snow added another first rounder. Glad to see Comrie gone. McAmmond hopefully adds an element a la Doug Weight, and Billy Guerin. He better have a better work attitude that Comrie.

I agree with CB’s grade for Garth, though I’d lean towards a +. Good job picking up another first rounder, even that late, and eliminating some dead weight (Comrie). Campoli hasn’t necessarily been getting better (or worse), and Hillen has potential.

  63. 63 ISLESFAN999

Campoli was drafted in the 7th round #227 overall.

  64. 64 Bobby

Good bye Hillary. Now we will have to get our fix the old-fashioned way, Google!!!

  65. 65 Scott

This works with McAmmond. I’ll take a heart and soul player who can actually win a face-off

    A++++ trade, serious.

  66. 66 Swan

Good return. McAmmond and Comrie are UFAs and were not returning to their respective teams. Snow just got a late 1st round for Campoli, a player who asked to be traded. That is pretty good return.

1st Witt, now Campoli. And Comrie certainly played like he didn’t like playing for Gordon even though overspeed appeared to suit his game. My guess is not everyone is hunky-dory in the locker room with Gordon at the helm. Campy probably will not be the last player wanting to flee this Team.

  67. 67 Eric

Brian (#57)- It may have been a quick trigger because Snow didn’t want word to get out that Campoli was looking to be traded. If Campoli did want out and the other teams knew that, then the Isles would not have gotten the 1st round pick for him.

  68. 68 jay dugan

I saw the 2 of them leaving but not together. McAmmond is just here for the season or maybe for some 4th line minutes. Is Hilbert next? McAmmond could be a replacemnt for him.
I assume Hillen is here to stay.

  69. 69 jisles

Wow, what is up with the campoli love affair. The guy was a 4 dman at best and he played awful this year. He was an offensive dman? could have fooled me. I think you have to put up some offensive numbers to get that title. this move makes sense on every level. Nice job.

  70. 70 Willis

Wow! Glad Comrie’s gone, surprised Campoli wanted out. Can’t wait to see who McAmmond is and what happens next.

  71. 71 mm30

jisles (54) preach on brother…brighter days are ahead and hey it will be determined if Snowy picks the right guys but the plan is spot on.

  72. 72 rb

since it’s pretty obvious we only took McAmmond back for $$ reasons til end of year, can’t he develop an “upper body injury” and enjoy the concession food from the press level while we bring up Colliton or Smith? on second thought, don’t do anything to jeopardize 30th place

  73. 73 Patrickc

Maybe Garth is stockpiling these picks to trade down to #1 and snag Tavares

  74. 74 JPinVA

Comrie… addition by subtraction of the toedrag. He has played well at times after the rehab, but did anybody really want to see him in an Islander Uni next year.
Campoli… he hasn’t really lived up to his promise. Let’s face it, he was a third pair puck mover on a team that has the most pourous defense in the NHL.
So… we get a late first rounder. Dean Mac is a UFA, so another 25 game rental to be a center on the MarchFourthDead line.
4 picks in the top 35. 6 core forwards.
Room to move around developing prospects.
I hope we get to see Callahan and Kohn at some point.
Okay… I really don’t see too much. if any negatives here.
Any chance of wrapping up Sim and Hilbert for a third rounder, a clean white shirt (with sleeves) for Kevin?

  75. 75 rb

only people poking fun at Snow for this deal are probably Rags and Dev fans

  76. 76 kevin

that last article was all about wifebeaters and barely anything on the lighthouse

  77. 77 isles72

I’m glad Comrie is gone -McAmmond’s hustle will rub off on the kids albeit obviously only for the remaining 20 + games of his tenure.

I liked Campy but I dont think he’s irreplaceable

inside track on Gilroy , Garth ?

  78. 78 mm30

    Tavares #1

Picks 30,31, & 35 to get in the 10-15 range and draft Cowan.

    Offensive Center-Big Dman.

    Done.

  79. 79 Vukota

They are taking Hedman with the 1st pick. Lock it up!!!

  80. 80 kevin

    great day
talking about wifebeaters, lighthouse project part, big trade ad im getting pizza

  81. 81 Isles316

This is a great trade. We basically traded a 5th or 6th defensemen for a 1st round pick.

    Good job Snow!

  82. 82 isles3113

I like the way you think mm30… Guess we also have to root for san jose to start losing too lol… Big trade from Garth… I will miss campoli, but him demanding a trade was just selfish on his part, but it’s business so it had to happen… Really looking forward to anything else Garth might do… Another second rounder ain’t a bad idea

  83. 83 Chickendirt

I don’t like the trade of Campolli. Not at all.

No idea that he wasn’t happy here either.

San Jose’s first rounder is going to be at the bottom of the first round. Maybe the return is good but tough to say that the pick is worth Campolli until we know who’s drafted.

    Someone could always slip down.

    Good luck chris!!!!

  84. 84 StevieL

I think Garth looks to trade down both #1 picks to capture the entire 4th round of the NHL draft!

  85. 85 Atari8bit

Very good trade for Les Isles, IMO.
What I am baffled at - why does Ottawa do this? They are currently sitting in the 10th spot, but a canyon away in points (13) for the 8th spot and needing to leapfrog Carolina & Pitt in the process. I can only think that they are going to flip one or both in another, larger deal but I can’t imagine either one of those being such a huge factor. Well outside of being in the playoff race, this (trade deadline) is a fun time of the season. We’ll see where it goes….

  86. 86 JPinVA

can we get Tonya Harding to practice with the Sharks?

  87. 87 kevin

well murray said they are going to try and lock up comrie

  88. 88 DanNOLA

This was a no brainer. A relatively oft-injured 7th round pick that has been here for 4 years and probably maxed out his usefullness with this Islander team and aparently wanted out of here, and Toe Drag who is a UFA in 6 weeks, for a 1st round pick.

  89. 89 jisles

If Garth is considering parlaying the pick for a trade, TSN’s Darren Dreger has an article of 10 interesting players on the trading block. One of those was Ryan Smythe. DD said that AVS GM is mandated to cut payroll and Smythes contract is obivous. If that is the case Garth should poke around for that one. Checked Ryans numbers and its pretty much right where he always is 48 pts in 54 games including 19 goals. He is 32 years old. Now the islnaders would take on the last 3 years of the contract. I think putting Sythe on RW next to Tavares could work. Could be possible.

  90. 90 Isles4cups

This is a B+ trade in my books and very close to an A. Comrie and his toe-drag are finally out of here. I liked Campoli, but I like the 1st round pick more, and Dean Mcammond is a UFA after this season. It seems like a good move. Good show Garth! I’m glad to hear that things have finally started to move along with the LightHouse project for all you Islander fans in and around the Long Island area. I may not ever make it there, but I’m a fan just the same.

  91. 91 Mikey

I have mixed feelings about this trade, but I’m generally positive.
1- I want to know why Campoli requested a trade. Was he upset that Weight/Okposo got a slot on the no 1 pp unit? Or does he hate the coach and direction of the team? I hope it was the former.
2- I hate giving up on a youngish guy, but Campy has not developed into what we hoped he could be, and he’s already played 200+ NHL games. The kid still has a mediocre first pass out of the zone, and needs to work on his balance. He’ll be eligible for free agency in 2 years, and I feel his trade value is only declining.
3- Having said that, I still think we maybe could have gotten a little more - maybe a mid-round pick thrown in?
4- With the improvement of Gervais and Hillen, I can live with this move.
5- We won’t be able to judge this trade until the draft. What will Garth do with 3 picks from 25-35? Maybe he wants a blue chip defenseman, but also wants Tavares. One way to get both is to trade up into the mid first round. Hedman isn’t the only stud available: Despres, Kulikov, or Ekman-Larsson, etc. are also highly touted. Maybe he makes this move to send a signal to Gilroy’s agent?

  92. 92 Jimmie

Gervais? LMAO. Gervais couldn’t tie Campoli’s laces. This is bust. And you’ll be crying about it in about two to three years when Campoli, like most Islander young prospects, develop elsewhere.

  93. 93 Dalybone

I feel Dalcy is being a bit harsh. But this is a great deal. Later Campoli.

  94. 94 mike

Great trade to get a second first round pick. I view it as insurance for Tavares. If Isles lose first pick in the lottery, then they can trade their 2 first round picks for the #1 overall.

  95. 95 dmen77

This is an EXCELLENT trade in my eyes. Comrie was doing nothing, Campoli is just too small to be a top 2 or 3 defenseman and we get a 1st Rounder. McAmmond will be our Silly for the rest of the season and maybe longer.

Who cares what pick it is, didn’t Mike Green get drafted like 27th or 28th?

Who would you rather have - Chris Campoli or Mike Green?

Now it’s up to Snow, Jankowski, Morrow and the rest of the scouting staff to find the right player with this pick.

This trade is a steal and if you surf the net you will see that the people in Canada are blasting Ottawa for this trade.

  96. 96 Sean

in garth we trust. great move garth campoli isn’t doing anything. taveras and a pick hopefully in the 25 range would be an incredible draft. we have the potential to be very good in a few years.

  97. 97 jonsson3

Bye Bye Comrie!!!! Thanks for everything Chris, good luck in Ottawa. Great move Garth I’m just glad someone took Comrie. Anyone you get in the draft can be no worse than Comrie.

It’sa ctually a pretty good move for Ottowa as well. they have a high first rounder. They liked Comrie and what he brought to their team. Comrie is on the upswing after rehab, and will probably be a 50-60 point guy with them… and now they can resign him without paying UFA prices.
campoli can probably help their “D”. He probably won’t, but he’s a cheap out if he fails there.
So to us, it’s campoli for a low first rounder… becasue Comrie was a goner. Good deal…DEFINITELY.
To Ottowa, if they sign Comrie, it’s a first rounder for a second line center who they liked before, and they get a possible second pair “D” to kick the tires on for a full year. Good deal for them.
Win-win… I can’t talk myself out of liking this deal… until they send campoli and picard to Fl for Bowmiester…then sign him for 5 years.
    :-)

Kate Murray wants to lock up Comrie?! Is he the secret to getting the Lighthouse approved?

  100. 100 Macch

Any word on a presser or just some words from Snowy?

  101. 101 jisles

I was thinking about this watching the pens games on Monday. Bill Guerin would fit real nice on RW with Sid. Billy can still put the puck in the net and he can create room not that sid needs it but I think it would be a good fit for both players. Geuring would be rejuvinated and sid can play with a guy he has confidence in. I think Guering would produce for the last 20 games or so and score alot and put the pens into the playoffs. I like Guering alot and you know it is killing him going through this rebuild on the islande. I say trade guering to the pens for some prospects or nhl ready player to free up more cap space and put Bill in a good position to make the playoffs again.

  102. 102 Swan

Nice analysis, JP. Similar to what I was thinking. The trade does makes some sense from Ottawa’s pov.

  103. 103 guerin13

so we have to root hard for sj’s first round opponent. then we have a mid first rounder which eliminates the need to try and trade up. i think this is just the beginning of garth’s wheeling and dealing.

  104. 104 Dan

Horrible trade. We only have about 4 players on our entire team who are true NHL’ers and there goes 2 of them. Chris was prob our best over all d man. Yes Witt and Rad overrated. This isnt the NFL, late first round picks do not matter for 5 years.

  105. 105 Nick Classic

I like the trade, and I can’t understand the Campoli love affair either…We Isles fans have the tendency to get fixated on certain players and never let that go. Whatever, if he wanted out he needs to go sooner rather than later, and we basically traded a useless player and a guy who wants out for a 1st round pick. Win in my eyes - and anybody whining that it’s a low first round pick needs to calm down - this is still likely 5 top 40 draft picks for us.

  106. 106 TIM

i think Garth will use this pic to move up in this years coming draft good move A-

  107. 107 Coach B

Like the deal very much. If the Islanders sign Matt Gilroy from Boston University he can potenialy replace Campoli.

  108. 108 dmen77

The uproar was in regards to Ottawa and their need for a rebuild. Not a blow-up rebuild but still a rebuild.

They lost a few key players to free agency over the years and don’t have too much depth besides their big 3. Goaltending has always been a big issue with them so the feeling was to keep that 1st Rounder and do it the right way.

I’ll be shocked if Comrie and Campoli produce enough to warrant giving up a 1st Rounder.

I still say great job to Garth, I want to see someone in Ottawa say great job to Murray.

  109. 109 Priest

I guess if Campoli wanted out, then this is a very good move. I’m not quite sure why Campoli would want out. By that I mean there has to be more than just this being a bad team. It’ll be a late pick for sure, but still to have 5 picks in the first two rounds (and possibly more to come?) is pretty sweet.

  110. 110 dally mac

Everyone who shot their mouth off about Snow can now eat their words as far as I’m concerned. You watch if he doesn’t use that pick and another player to move further down to the middle of round one before it’s said and done. MacCammond won’t be around for long; gone by next week even for a sixth rounder or part of a package. Great job Snowman.

  111. 111 Nick Classic

All the Canadians on the TSN site are crying about what an awful trade this was for Ottawa. Well done, Garth.

  112. 112 HilbertSnipe

Boy am I going to miss Comrie’s toe-drags… JUST KIDDING! I hated him.
Campoli I liked nd would like to see him stay unless we got a good return… and we did. I give Garth an A for this trade. If we can turn this pick into something good it will even make it better, of course.

  113. 113 DanNOLA

Dan, are you serious? Best overall D-man? Better than Streit? 1 goal in 51 games 2 years ago, 4 goals in 46 games last year (missed the rest due to injury) and 6 goals so far this year. He supposedly playes more of a 2-way game, but doesn’t actully have any offense. We have guys like Hillen, Callahan, FMIV, and Andy Mac who can do at least as well.

  114. 114 Strummer's Army

GO GARTH! MORE OF THIS TYPE OF STUFF PLEASE! Empty the roster of all the guys who don’t fit. A late first rounder is great. Camps should have blossomed and flourished this year under Gordon. Since he did not then he wasn’t going to. Good luck to him and Comrie. Both nice guys and all but this is right for the team.

I live in Gainesville, FL. I was walking down town today and saw a parked car with a NY Islanders bumper sticker on it. It’ll sound funny to most of you but it was a nice surprise I don’t see many here. I did see a guy in the grocery store last week wearing a Ranger jersey. I told him they sucked as we passed.

  115. 115 Matt

Thank Christ. Later Comrie!!!!!!!!!! Wish it was Gervais instead of Campoli but what can you do, can’t have everything.

  116. 116 Chickendirt

Who’s to say that Campollie SHOULD have flourished under Gordon?

The point on the PP should be covered by Streit and Campolli. It’s not because Gordon, in a move I don’t like, has Okposo playing the point.

And that probably contributed to Campolli asking out.

  117. 117 guerin13

we were not winning a cup with either of these two players. isn’t it funny how most (if not all) of the players complaining about the system just aren’t that good? garth got rid of two guys who weren’t part of the solution here and got back a valuable asset. that is what good gm’s do

  118. 118 Bob

I don’t like the trade Campoli I always liked his heart, his contract for next year and his shot and at 24 for a very late 1st round pick it would seem like not enough. If it was Ottowa’s first I would be happy not San Jose’s

  119. 119 Marc from Troy

mm30 (61)… Campoli is “hurt all the time”?? Unfair. You seem to have him confused with Radek Martinek, Andy Sutton, or Freddy Meyer. And, fcol, damn near everyone on this team is a minus player. Using that as criteria for judging any one of them is ridiculous. Not that I’m surprised, but amazing how quick the piling on starts.

And, not that anyone considered this in the rush to label Campoli things like “selfish” for requesting a trade, but isn’t it at least somewhat possible that maybe it was for other reasons? For instance, his hometown is about a 4 hr drive from Ottawa. Maybe something that would have him ask to be closer to home? Who the hell knows… which is exactly my point. I think I’ll wait until (or if) we find out why he wanted out before I start crucifying the kid for it.

I think, for the overall benefit of the team, that this was a damn good trade. But I would think that we could give a guy who came from nothing and worked hard for this team for a few years at least a little respect as he’s on his way out the door.

    Best of luck, Chris.

  120. 120 Bobby

If we could package Guerin for another 1st rounder we then have the flexibility to look into putting a serious offer together for Lecavelier. Just a thought!!

  121. 121 Vukota

Campoli was 6th rd pick who looked decent on a horrible team. He will be no more then a 4th d-man at best.

  122. 122 Justin

What is Ottawa doing? What purpose does Comrie serve for a non-plzyoff tezm? And he already played there, very odd. I always hoped Campoli would develop into a top power-play d-man, but it’s apparent Streit has blown right past him in that regard and he was never much defensively to begin with. I can’t imagne how unmotivated McAmmond will be if he has to play any games for the Isles.

  123. 123 19 ISLE in NJ 22

WOW!!! …. I’m kinda shocked … but no so much … IMO a SJ first round pick is almost a 2nd rounder … Not gonna miss Comrie so much … Camps … nice guy … good young player … maybe gave away to much in the deal …. we’ll see … Wish ya luck CC … you have a shot at the cup this year now.

  124. 124 Kevin Fitz

ANOTHER great move by Garth! Turning into quite an impressive GM in my opinion. Very interested to see if he keeps this pick or uses it as part of another deal. Should be an interesting couple of weeks.

    Go Isles!

  125. 125 HilbertSnipe

Remember when I said that Alfredsson breaking his jaw would hurt us?! FALSE. It made Comrie’s value go up!

  126. 126 dmen77

Is this pick going to be fate for us? Is this going to be our Richards, our Green, our big-time young player.

It could easily be called the pick nobody wanted, I believe we are now the 4th team to own the pick.

San Jose –> Tampa –> Ottawa –> NYI

  127. 127 nyislanders93

Great deal by Snow. Campoli was a pretty good player but if he requested a trade then it was the right move to trade him. Comrie doesn’t try and he I’ve wanted him gone since last year. A 1st round pick is a good return for the both of them even though it is late. Whoever thinks Ryan Smyth is coming back to the Islanders is absolutely insane, 0% chance of getting him back.

  128. 128 Jethro09

I wonder if Dean McCammond has any white wife beaters he can wear to the game on Saturday with the rest of us?

  129. 129 Rob

Vukota - the organ-eye-zation isnt dumb enough to pass up Tavares for Hedman if they had the chance so i hope you are wrong. As for the trade - I would have taken one hockey puck for Comrie - and Campoli is a nice player but trust me he wont be missed - I usually hate everything about Garth Snow - but he did a good job here…

  130. 130 Dadi

    Thank You Garth! Finally…

  131. 131 miketee

The trade simply reinforces that fact that Snow intends to blow up the team and completely remodel it. Given the fact that we are the worst team in the NHL with one of the weakest prospect bases (most of our better prospects are years away) deals of average players for prospects or high picks is not a bad way to go.

We’ll get a chance to see a lot of Hillen before Garth has to decide whether to re-sign him and this should also cement us into last place and no worse than the 2nd pick in the draft.

Having this opening may also help to lure Gilroy into signing with us knowing he’s have a good chance to step into the lineup and get some substantial minutes.

  132. 132 Isles316

Jethro you are cracking me up today. I’m currently wearing my wife beater now in honor of your posts.

I’m still giddy over this trade.

  133. 133 Tony

Please remember that the draft order is not by the final standings….it goes by how teams finish in the playoffs. If San Jose wins the Presidents Trophy and loses in the first round….this pick could be anywhere from 16-20.

    Outstanding move by Garth Snow

  134. 134 IslesFan13inFla

GREAT deal by the Snowman. Getting a first rounder for those two is a steal. Now correct me if I’m wrong but San Jose’s #1 pick from Ottowa could be as low as 30th(if they win the cup) but as HIGH as 15th (if San Jose gets bounced in the 1st round.) right? Any way there goes my trade thought of Campoli to Atl for Valabik LOL Keep it going Garth!

  135. 135 Big Dog

YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES

  136. 136 Strummer's Army

CB, did the Isles get fair value back?

Now we have to all start rooting for SJ to start losing in addition to Toronto(for the 2nd rounder). This deal will only get better the higher the pick ends up.

I’m not gonna miss either player. Interesting though who’s taking Camps spot on defense? Someone coming back from injury, Callahan or MacDonald coming up, or another trade?

Will Blake Comeau now take back the #14 he wore for so long?

  137. 137 Strummer's Army

I have a feeling this is the pick that gets us Zack Kassian!!!! :)

  138. 138 Isles316

Well, I watched Kings vs Sharks last night. If there is a team that can knock of the Sharks in round 1 its the Kings. The Kings hit the Sharks all night and the Sharks can’t take it.

Lets hope the Kings get the 8th spot and knock them out fast!

  139. 139 Justin Marques

I think this is a phenomenal acquisition by Garth Snow. We can all agree Comrie was on his way out anyway, and he just did not fit the system. As for Campoli, it is very sad to see him go as I was a fan, but we did get good compensation back for him. Could this be a bigger piece for the Islanders? Maybe something else is in the works…

  140. 140 Bobby

19 isle in nj…..how does Campoli have a shot at the cup now? Do they not give you the standings in NJ? Their goaltending situation is horrible, they’ve went threw 1 coach already & it appears as if they are about to go into a bit aof a shakeup/mini-rebuild themselves. The only shot at touching the cup this year is by taking the short drive over to Toronto and paying the $13 admission like everyone else.

  141. 141 PeteZ

Chris seems a little bitter for some reason:

“(The Senators) have a lot of potential; I just hope I’ll be able to add to that,” Campoli said. “It’s going to be a challenge going to a big hockey market in Ottawa and I’m excited about it. Hopefully the day-to-day grind of playing in a city like that will push me to be better.”

Big hockey market; playing in a city like that will push me to be better… are you kidding?

  142. 142 randy boyd

Comrie I would have traded for a case of tape, so no problem there. Should be addition by subtraction if Gordon will actually give another kid his ice time.

Campoli asked for a trade? Before you all accept this as fact, remember how the spin from Snow has come before. Dubie was out of shape and that’s why Nolan didn’t play him. That one turned out to be less than a slam dunk, fact wise. All in all, though, even a late 1st rounder is probably ok for Campoli, trade request or not, who always seems on the verge of turning the corner but never quite has (see Bruno “bad play” Gervais for another example).

It would have been nice to get back some size or toughness, but it is Garth Snow, so the best we can hope for in his deals is that they are not debacles.

I still want a real GM and an NHL coach.

  143. 143 Bryan

Great trade. Mcammond will be just as good for us as Comrie who wasnt coming back next year anyway.

That essentially makes it Campoli for a 1st round pick.

Campoli asked to leave?!?! Good Riddance! The guy is barely an NHL defensman.

  144. 144 Jethro09

Maybe this move helps the Isles in their quest for Gilroy and Bozak (if they are even on that quest, and if they’re not, they should be)?

I really liked Campoli while he was here and wish him well, but if he really asked to be traded that would leave me disappointed. That makes the trade that much better. I know its been tough sledding with this team the past couple of years (or decades, depending on who you ask) and I’m sure its been as tough on the players as it has been on the fan base. But I really don’t want any part of any guy who asks to be traded.

If Campy wanted out, I say “good riddance”. I’d rather have guys that want to be here and be part of the turnaround than guys who what to bail.

  145. 145 Jethro09

Isles316: That’s good to hear. I have my beater on too. I may not wash it until after Saturday’s game.

  146. 146 Isles Fan in Ulster County

I laughed at one comment on TSN.ca that said “Sens robbed the Isles blind!” Campoli will be missed, but he wasn’t lighting the lamp nearly enough to be an offensive defenseman. Comrie is a waste anyway. Good luck to CC, though.

  147. 147 Bobby

It would be nice if Ryan Elis dropped down that late. Kassian is legit as well (strummer’s army)

  148. 148 Jerky

Marc from Troy (119) … well said.

  149. 149 Hogue#33

I would like to see more players go in exchange for draft picks… bring some of the minor leaguers up to play out the rest of the season to see what they can do… it can’t be any worse Ill tell ya that…

  150. 150 Chris TMC

I will miss Campoli… but at least we didnt get garbage in return. Heck, I remember the Islanders trading Derek King a fifth round pick, Campoli got a 1st.

  151. 151 Pritchett54

I think 80% of the posts on here are very positive but there are a bunch of negative posts. That just confirms to me that some islanders fans are just whining babies and they prefer to be upset than happy. I cant imagine how this wont be viewed as a coup. This is the sort of trade that we would make but the other direction. Take on a decent center with a contract up at the end of the year and a 5th or 6th dman for a 1st round pick. This pick could end up being the 17th pick or something like that!!! Are you kidding me?? For Comrie, who I personally liked but he wasnt staying anyway and Campoli who at best is a 4th dman. Fantastic Job Garth Algar.

  152. 152 Jim Clark

First we lose the Ice Breakers, now we lose Hilary Duff. At least there are the Ice Girls for eye candy, unless Wang decides to have Kate Murray clean the ice.

Let’s hope Snow job can do the job in the 2009 draft.

  153. 153 SinCityHockeyFan

wow guys.. Life long Islander fan watching since 1979. I never reply to message boards but I have to air this pet peeve. ALL you fans you try to come across as all knowing ever educated fans. Why do you insist on posting snow will package a few of his 2nd round picks and the late 1st they just acquired to “MOVE DOWN” into the middle of the first. Hate to break it to you geniuses but that’s called “MOVING UP” in the draft…. Remember Garth traded down twice in last draft. Or do you guys in New York drive up to Florida.. and then drive down back to New York. SO all you educated hockey fans please show more respect to others thoughts. Since at least 15 of you don’t know the difference between trading up and trading down in a draft

  154. 154 19 ISLE in NJ 22

Bobby … when I heard about the trade … I got it on the radio halfway into the segment and thought the trade was with San Jose … then I started reading the web … I commented before reading … foot in mouth disease so to speak… LOL

  155. 155 19 ISLE in NJ 22

The more I think about the deal and digest it … the more I like it … even if they trade that SJ #1 pick packaged with another pick to move up in the first round … I like it …. ALOT!!!

  156. 156 Jason

All those missing CC… get used to it. This rebuild is going to have a load of change-overs in due time.

But all for the better. Must look at the big picture.

    Good luck CC.

  157. 157 SIR WILLIAM

The recent play of Gervais must have had something to do with this. Gervais has stepped up while Campoli has always been careless with the puck in his own end.
Comrie looks like a guy with nothing left in the tank.
McCammond is just salary back. He may go to someone else who needs his face off skills and his defense for a playoff run.

Give Snow an “B+” for this one. Moves up to an “A” if he unloads Deano for a pick…..SW

  158. 158 Gary

Dalcy #6 - Campoli knows who he is. I know what he is. He’s a good, not great but good, young player who gives time to the community and is well-liked by his teammates and most fans. He didn’t go in and demand a trade and then let the public know about it (the way Chris Pronger screwed Edmonton). He requested a trade because he wasn’t happy and then quietly went about his business until Garth could accommodate him. I’ll be rooting for Chris to do well in Ottawa.

  159. 159 C.J.

    Thoughts:

    1. Sick over losing Hilary. Love that woman.

    2. Comrie - don’t let the door hit you in the @ss you slug.

    3. Campoli - VERY surprised to hear he wanted out. VERY sorry to see him go. You called it CB and I doubted you. Naive on my part. I need to listen a bit more. Now… if the Isles part w/Bergenheim something’s gotta be going on deeper there too. I’ll be more sick if that happens.

    4. McAmmond - MUST be moved at the deadline. I think GMG knew he wasn’t going to have any takers for Comrie. I think he’ll have more success in moving McAmmond and his cheaper contract (5th rounder).

    5. GMG needs to move SJ’s 1st and some of his 2nds and land a top 10 pick. It is that simple. I can see the Isles walking away w/Hedman and Schroeder.

  160. 160 Mario

Please stop saying Hedman!!!!! We need to draft Taveres!!!! We have no one that can score.

  161. 161 Islebethere4u

First of all I’d like to wish Chris Campoli all the best. He gave back a lot to the community and was well liked. Please don’t think badly of him. If he did ask for a trade, he did it the RIGHT way…quietly and not through his agent or through the tabloids. Good job Garth for getting a first rounder. Comrie won’t be missed but McAmmond could give a few faceoff wins at least for the rest of this year. Never saw this coming after signing CC last year. Thought he was happy here. Who knows. Looking forward to the trade deadline and the draft now!

  162. 162 Mario

Bye Comrie!! Hate to see Camps go but we have a better d-man in Bridgeport in Chris Lee. He moves the puck really well and he hardly turns it over. I like the move.

  163. 163 Wayne

Excellent trade for the Islanders. If a player, such as Campoli, wants out then you have to trade him. As for Comrie, he makes Gretzky look like a goon. I never in my life ever saw anyone as weak as he is on his skates. God forbid he goes and attempts to dig a puck off of the boards. See ya Comrie and don’t let the door hit you on your way out. I will mail you all of your 20 points. Thanks for all of the “hard” work.

  164. 164 C.J.

Mario (post 162). Why? So we can lose games 6-5 instead of 6-2?

I’m not partial to either Tavares or Hedman… I just get the feeling that GMG is going to lean towards the dman and am prepping myself for it.

  165. 165 SinCityHockeyFan

since I already posted… just wanted to any post my “2 cents” if i was Garth Snow this is what I’d do by the trade dead line.
1)i pray another team loses a key component and become in need of a Guerin or Witt type player. package one of them with sim or a 4 round pick for a mid to late first round pick.

2)then i’d make a sign and trade deal at the dead line. offer up one of our mid to late 1st round picks. and two of our three 2nd round picks (leaving us still with 2 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks)
to Florida for jay bowmeister. Only make this trade if it’s a sign and trade or else no dice.

Then the islanders can use the 1st overall pick (that is if they do indeed win the lottery) to draft tavares. This would be a coup for snow if he could pull that off.

snow would give the islanders the stud defenseman they need to go with striet

Drafting a highly touted scoring center
in tavares. to go with the core of kids. plus having the added luxury of an additional 1st rounder and two more seconds.

if Garth plays his cards right the islanders are going to have lots of assets other teams are going to covet.

if the islanders make any more trades that nets them back any additional 1 or 2nd rounders then you can bet your sweet ass.. garth is going to pull of some huge trade to take everyone by surprise whether it happens at the trade dead line or on trade day. but i am willing to bet the farm some thing along that magnitude will happen if the isles acquire any additional 1 or 2 rounders.

  166. 166 SinCityHockeyFan

wow sorry cant add… i should have said we’d still have 1 2nd rounder left not two sorry my bad

  167. 167 Speatleysson

Its amusing to me you guy’s think you got the better end of this deal. In MacAmmond your getting a 35 year old who is concussion prone and is at best a 3rd line center, but more a 4th liner. He’s fast, but his skill is suspect. In fact, he may not even ever suit up for a game with the Isles as he had “concussion like sympton’s” at the start of this week again. But you never know, maybe on a team like yours he will slide right into a 1st or 2nd line roll……haha.

And good luck with that late first rounder. If Snow is able to move it, give him GM of the year, cause there is not going to be to many teams as desperate as the Isles to give up to much in return for it. This years draft isnt as deep as the last couple of years beyond the top 10. In fact if you take a look at central scouting, players projected to go that late are a couple of young goalies who take a long, long time to develop, if they ever do, and that’s not something you need anyway, a some d-men that dont show any promise beyond being a 5th or 6th.

We get Comrie back, who was a fan favourite here during our cup run and excelled really, and never wanted to leave. He told Murray last week he wanted to come back. I think, and hope, he’ll be rejuvenated and play some great hockey. Campoli is not the answer, but he is part of it. We’ve been looking for a PMD al year, and hopefully with the skill we have up front he’ll be able to show what he’s really worth. He’ll give us some skill and mobility back there we’ve been lacking, he’s a good first past guy, he’s still young, will fit into Clouston’s system well, and plays on the power play.

All in all, I guess there is a good arguement for both sides getting the better of this trade, I just think we addressed more needs than you guy’s did. Like I said, I wouldnt be all that excited about that 29th or 30th pick turning into a top 10.

And if this trade doesnt work out for Ottawa, at least we have Hilary Duff and Carrie Underwood now!

  168. 168 john b

you guys talk so much ish on here. chris is actually a close friend of mine and it hurts to see how people speculate and say things about how he wanted out. chris never wanted out and he will tell you straight up to your face he loved playing for the islanders. He played very well and played with passion. He had great relationships with all of his teammates and wang loved him. Don’t believe he wanted out and asked for a trade when he didn’t. He wasn’t on the same page with the coach but he would never say he wanted out. He loves long island..the fans and all.
