Topics included the Islanders’ cap flexibility, Blake Comeau’s effort, the Islanders’ loss, Bridgeport’s 1-0 win in Hartford and subjects we’d kill to never see brought up on the blog again.

Talk about the game in Comments.

This is a good test for the youngsters tonight. A DESPERATE Ranger squad vs up-and-coming youngsters. I expect guys like Bailey, KO, and Bergy to have excellent games tonight and show their worth to the organIzation.

  2. avatar Islanders1984 says:

I hope our cap space plays a part in the deadline. It would be great to get korpikoski and prucha from the rangers for guerin if isles are willing to take on one of rangers big contracts to free up cap space

  3. avatar Dennis says:

Anyone know if Trent will be in the line-up tonight?

  4. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

#2 sounds good to me. Guerin for korpikosky, prucha and rosival. I would do it. Would u?

  5. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Thats the guy i was thinking we could take back. I wouldn’t want them to touch reddens contract

  6. avatar Rich says:

Isles should target Valiquette. He has been solid for them all year.

  7. avatar DanNOLA says:

Oh God no. Redden and his contract make DP’s and Yashin’s combined look decent.

  8. avatar Isle_in_LA says:

I think the Isles/Rags rivalry is going to get much better in the next few years. It’s been a while since we had homegrown boys that grow into great players and truly love the island. One of the most important (or fun) things about being an Islander fan is the universal hatred of the Rangers. These young guys will start to understand how much it means to fans and it will begin to mean a lot to them.

In my opinion, the rivalry hasn’t been the same the last few years because of all of the free agents. You can’t get a real taste of it if you’re only here for a season or two. Once these guys make the playoffs and face the Rags…that’s when the rivalry will take a new step foward.

On that note, I hope they crush the Rags tonight:)

  9. avatar Vukota says:

I really hope Orr doesn’t crush anybody’s skull tonight.

  10. avatar StevieL says:

Redden and Gomez are disaster contracts for the Rangers. They may be in worst shape than the Isles the next few years. Small team with Cap issues. At least the Isles have made their direction known! Rangers are just spinning their wheels. I would be happy to take any of the above mentioned off their hands. Maybe not this season, but the Isles will be beating on the Rangers in the coming years!

  11. avatar DanNOLA says:

I am looking more forward to watching tonight’s game than any since the start of the season. One of two things I think can happen 1) the Rangers play very desperate and intense knowing that their season is on the verge of collapsing and Renney is in trouble and the Isles will end up having to match 2) the Rangers continue to play like zombies and the kids will have to learn tonight how to capitalize and bury a dieing team. Either way, there is blood in the water, and the Isles need to be like sharks.

  12. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Someone asked about if the Wrecker can play the game and be a legit heavy. He is a good skater, throws thunderous hits, is very strong, tremendeous balance, can take a shot,, good passer. From the previous videos and games I have seen of him going until the end of this years training camp he looks like he can develop but he wasn’t as technically sound of a fighter as he should have been. I imagine that is what he was learning all year along with other aspects of the game. From the last few games and videos I have seen he was dominating his fights and still throwing the big hits.

With Avery in for Hartford I am wondering who gets to him first? Haley, Morency, Frtiz, Wrecker, Callahan? Should be interesting.

I really hope Mr. Fritz is playing for the Isles tonight instead of Mr. Sim.

  13. avatar Hock says:

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Pittsburgh game gave us some very encouraging flashes, but remember, this team is still under construction. Don’t get me wrong…I hope we get to see some more flashes of the future tonight against our arch rival, but at least on paper, we are out-gunned and if the Rangers come to play, it COULD be a long night.

  14. avatar Joe says:

    Agreed Strummer

  15. avatar Al says:

Very true Hock. The Rangers need to win this game bad. They don’t want to stay in the middle of the pack of playoff teams and really don’t want to lose this game at home to the Islanders. That’s all the motivation the Islanders should need to play hard and compete. The last time the 2 teams played the Isles played good enough to win but were unable to score…same problem the Rangers are having now-it’s time the Islanders smelled that blood in the water and dragged the Rangers down to an 82 game non playoff season!

  16. avatar Isles1972 says:

I just hope the Isles come out and play hard. The game in Tampa last weak was physical, and although they lost, they stepped up to the plate. Give this team credit, they don’t give up. Lets go Isles!!!!!

  17. avatar Willis says:

Like Hock says, it could be a long night, but I don’t see these guys giving up, which is something none of us could even dream about a couple of months ago. Progress!

Stay on your toes boys! GO ISLES!

  18. avatar nightfly says:

You’ll find out a lot tonight. If the Rags lie down like dogs and get rolled, then Renney is done, kaput. They’ll have succeeded in tossing him overboard. They’ll be sending Orr out there to stir the pot early to get the crowd into it, keep themselves motivated.

The Isles have to play through it and not shy away from contact, and try to draw penalties to make the Rags pay for gooning it up. They absolutely cannot let Zherdev and Naslund and etc. get a couple of quick ones, because then it’s open season.

Maybe Witter or Sutton will grapple with someone. They’re not classic heavywieghts but they’re physical and they may grapple to defend their guys.

  19. avatar Gary says:

The time of the year when the Islanders are out of the Playoffs and now it’s time to turn to rooting for the Rangers to blow their once solid playoff spot.

Let’s Go Islanders Tonight and then Let’s go Hurricanes and Penguins down the stretch!!!

  20. avatar "Semi-Dissillusioned Brian" in VA says:

We will probably get rolled tonight by a desparate hockey club in Manhattan. But it will be blankin’ fun if we jump on these guys early. Nothing like beating the Rangers in the world most famous arena. If we win, and we do have a shot considering we always play well there, Renney is Gone!
This rivalry is nuts they dominate us at the Coliseum and we better them at MSG!

  21. avatar cgs878 says:

Renney is a good coach. He’s just stuck with pathetic players on long, expensive contracts. Much like Torts, he’ll be the “sacrificial lamb” this season, and it won’t change anything.

I fully believe that all contracts should have incentives built into them so that the players HAVE to perform better in order to earn more money. Who would perform better knowing that they are guaranteed a salary no matter what?? Certainly not the players on long-term contracts.

    Let’s Go-Go-Go Islanders!

  22. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

I have a feeling that the Rangers are grippin their sticks a bit tighter than the Islanders. They have way more to lose and are beginning to choke.

    Isles win 4-2…………SW

  23. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Sutton? Is he playing tonight? Last I heard he was on IR so I wouldn’t expect him to tangle with anyone.

  24. avatar isles316 says:

I’m pumped up for tonight more so than any other game this season. I will absolutely lose it tonight and If I was there I’d probably get arrested.

  25. avatar admin says:

Greetings, friends. I’m back online. I look forward to getting back to hockey after a day and a half stranded at the house without phone, cable and net and my meltdown of a pre-game. See you back around faceoff time…CB

  26. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Sutton has been hurt for a while. I dont think he is expected back soon.

  27. avatar dmen77 says:

Welcome back CB. It’s really a nightmare when the cable goes out for most of us. No internet is more torture than anything else!

Let’s hope Rags fans aren’t also saying “welcome back” tonight. I hope our youngsters smell blood in the water like a shark as others have said and we jump on them early and often.

The biggest key is to keep Orr’s gloves on and draw penalties doing so. We obviously do not have anyone to match him so we need to make up a waste of a spot in the lineup.

Witter needs to put a body on Zherdev, Gomez, Drury and Naslund every chance he gets like he was with Malkin on Monday. We need to set the physical tone early and do it with the mitts on……and hey, giving the Rags a PP isn’t such a bad thing either.

    LETS GO ISLANDERS BABY!

  28. avatar rob says:

Would anyone be surprised if we go into the Garden and win – if Renney gets fired and tomorrow Laviolette is their new coach?

  29. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

Getting Sutton back next year will be like a FA signing. He is our best shutdown Dman. Too bad he has been hurt so much the last 2 years.

Going back to the Rangers and other big market teams salary cap issues, it is going to be very interesting this off season. The cap is going down next year. Maybe significantly down. The only reason the cap is so high is because last summer the Canadian dollar was a lot stronger than the American dollar and a lot of the revenue for the NHL comes from Canada. But now that the Canadian dollar has crashed, the money generated in Canada will not have as much of an effect on the total revenue. Therefore, these teams at the cap this year are going to need to cut payroll just to get down to what the new cap will be. So they will not be able to sign big name FA’s. So if the big time FA’s still want to get paid, they will need to go to teams like the Islanders, Kings etc., who are far far below the cap right now.

  30. avatar Islanders1984 says:

rob that would be horrible. But i don’t see laviolette or anyone outsider getting rags job. they will promote an assitant

  31. avatar isles316 says:

Renney is going to get a bad deal here. The Rangers aren’t that good and he is going to take the blame. Oh well, hopefully Sather will take the fall.

  32. avatar JOE RVC says:

this is gonna be one heck of a game lets go isles get long

  33. avatar Michael says:

Its games like these when i start to think about the physical play against the Rangers that reminds me just how small this team is. Teams can bulldoze us. A game against the Bruins this year Milan Lucic seemed to take over the game because no one could match his size or energy on the isles side. Where are our big boys who can play the game? Im not talking about Fritz, Im talking about a line like the Devils have with Rupp Holik and Zubrus. All the Isles lines are so small. I feel bad for Witt and Jackman. There overmatched. Sutton is out. Even our prospect pool is on the smallish side. Whats our D going to look like in 5 years? Katic, Campoli, Hillen, Ness, Gervais and whoever else? If the Rangers get physical and dirty tonight they will take over this game. If they let the Isles hang with them, the Isles have a good shot.

  34. avatar The Beast says:

I have a bad feeling about tonight–and I agree on Orr and Fritz commentary above. Its frustrating to see a guy like Jeff Tambellini on the ice while the Rags are pushing us around. I’ve had enough of the “it takes a spot from the youth” crap–we dont have much talent and there’s NO excuse to get beaten physically.

  35. avatar isles316 says:

Just got off the phone with my buddy in Cali. He has Kings vs Ducks and I’ve got Isles vs Rangers.

We have both already lost it tonight.

    LETS GO ISLANDERS

  36. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Hey, I don’t get to see the pregame where I live. Is Fritz in?

  37. avatar isles316 says:

    No Fritz:

Hunter in, Sim in, Tambellini in.

    From NHL.com

  38. avatar Scott says:

    hey michael (33)

ya know pronger is a FA…. depending on what the market is for him, a 4, 5 year deal for 7, 7.5 might not be a bad deal.

Question is if he’d accept it.

  39. avatar Strummer's Army says:

STUPID! I am glad Hunter is back (who are they sitting for him to play?). I just think Fritz bring more then Sim.

  40. avatar art says:

renney is not close ot being dumped. Maybe if they miss the playoffs he’s out. The rangers are not playing up to the sum of their parts. Overpriced mix of smallish players though bigger than the isles. When the caps play smaller teams it looks like father son night!

  41. avatar MT says:

Hunter’s not playing, they updated the lineup

  42. avatar isles316 says:

they have 19 skaters listed. The lineup from Monday plus Hunter.

  43. avatar Islanders329 says:

No Fritz?! Damn i thought i was gonna see a good tussle tonight.

On a side note if anyone is attending the game on sat against the devils, wear a white shirt or your white jersey for white out for the lighthouse!

  44. avatar admin says:

There was never any indication Fritz was playing tonight. Hunter is still out, according to the NYI…CB

  45. avatar Islanders1984 says:

CB, do you think Isles will use there cap flexability at the trade deadline in order to get better assets from teams

  46. avatar isles316 says:

Danis looks awful. Like he can’t move.

  47. avatar dmen77 says:

we lose a 3 on 1 battle and it’s in our net.

Danis does not look sharp early

  48. avatar Joe says:

Well this is a disgrace, Campoli doing all the hitting, no one else doing much. Glad we gave the Rags back their confidence…

  49. avatar rob says:

woooo streit – that was pretty

  50. avatar MSA says:

    Streit!!!!

  51. avatar dmen77 says:

    That was beautiful

Go back door all game long!

  52. avatar isles316 says:

CB, is the post limit in affect for game threads?

  53. avatar Michael says:

    beautiful pass and shot

as much as i love howie and billy i definitely miss joe michelleti such good hockey knowledge and he is always a fair announcer

on a side note: i hate voros

  54. avatar MSA says:

We could use a quick lead to shut up the Rags fans…. or a fight.

  55. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Better hope this game doesn’t get physical because the Isles will lose badly in that department. The main problem I have with Snow and Gordon is they think they are smarter then the rest of the entire NHL, Media and fans. You don’t shape your roster the right way to go against your biggest foe? You don’t understand how Isles vs. Rangers is played? Isles are already being out hit and getting the worst of it afte whistles. Just disgusting how ignorant and stubborn Snow and Gordon is on this topic.

Beautiful goal by Streit from Okposo and Comeau that at least is a good sign. I am sure Jon Sim will have a massive positive impact on this game like he does on every game. I pray for the day I no longer have to watch him in an Isles uniform.

  56. avatar Michael says:

    wheres billy?

    we got a okposo-comrie-sim line

  57. avatar Joe says:

    Wow Sim is Awful!

    Amen Strummer.

  58. avatar Joe says:

Orr decked Comrie away from the puck, no call, no response…nice

  59. avatar admin says:

isles316 (52): There’s no Comment limit in game threads, but we just want to make sure everyone gets a word in.

islanders1984 (45): They might be able to acquire a gem of a pick, player or prospect by using their cap flexibility, but I just don’t know if there is much of a demand for their healthy veterans. Maybe they make one deal like that. Maybe they push off another deal like that in the summer. Would not expect huge moves. I continue to wonder if a youngish Islander could go, as I wrote about in my story last Friday…CB

  60. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Hey, way to go MSG for just playing LONDON CALLING! They did something good. :)

  61. avatar MSA says:

Orr is looking to go….Jackman will be up for it.

  62. avatar Joe says:

MSA, that will end Jackmans season…

  63. avatar Michael says:

Jackman shouldnt be up to Orr unless he has to. There in different leagues, look for Voros-Jackman or Reitz-Jackman.

Is it me or does it look like Jackman is skating a little slower than usual tonight?

  64. avatar dmen77 says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Now is not the time to fight. The Isles have had the better play the last 5-6 min. No need to fight and give the Rags momentum.

  65. avatar MSA says:

#60 Strummer -for anyone who didn’t know who Joe was?

  66. avatar isles316 says:

Comeau is having a great period.

  67. avatar Kyle says:

Ok here’s what I thought of the first period

    1. Kyle Okposo, man does he look like a future point per game player

    2. Yann Danis just let’s the puck hit him

    3. The Rangers are playing like they want Tom Renney fired

    4. Can someone get Mike Comrie off the ice? He is just coasting like he doesn’t care. Ditto for Jeff Tambellini, another Millbury prospect that never panned out

  68. avatar Joe says:

Comrie and Sim combo is a disaster. Boy, Sim is trying he just sucks but Comrie looks like hes skating around with Hillary Duff out there, what a disgrace.

  69. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Amen it’s for the great man and musician Joe Strummer! RIP

  70. avatar isles316 says:

Tambellini is trying. I know everyone hates Sim but he has been in the right place tonight.

This game is not about knocking the Isles. It’s about beating the Rangers.

  71. avatar AM says:

CB, Referring to your past answer above, could you see a McCabe situation like last year where a team might just dump a vet with an expiring and enormous contract so they have cap flexibility to acquire more parts? I’d expect it would be player X and better draft pick for Isles worse draft pick or minor league player.

  72. avatar MSA says:

    Agreed Strummer

Meanwhile Witt looks like he is trying to get something going, but no takers…

  73. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

CB – any news about the Environmental review for the lighthouse yet? I know they are very close to when they were suppose to hand it in. have they done this yet????

  74. avatar 7th Woman says:

The last game, Sim looked like he didn’t want to have the puck at all. He may be BETTER tonight, but he still is horrid.

  75. avatar joey303 says:

Stop with Comrie and Sim. Ive seen a lot worse – it seems that a few here just want to slam them EVERY game. Jeez – relax they werent so bad 1st period. On a side note – I timed it – the idiot that whistles every game took all of 2 seconds to start whistling – GET A LIFE !!!

  76. avatar NickyL says:

Kyle(67). Tambellini was never our prospect. We traded for him.

  77. avatar James says:

Great pass by Comeau to Streit. Bailey looks good but without a doubt needs to put on 20 pounds. Okposo looks like a beast along the boards. After a shaky start Danis looked better towards the end of the period. Hopefully he can keep it up. Guerin apparently doesnt like Comrie taking all the heat for being the least inspired player on our team so i guess he decided hell just float around like Comrie also.

  78. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Chris, how many of the following will NOT be with the Isles after the trade deadline?

    1.Campolli
    2. itt
    3.Martinek
    4.Geravis
    5.Meyer
    6.Comrie
    7.Weight
    8.Guerin
    9.Sim
    10. Park
    11. Hunter

I’d like to go on record that trading Bergenheim would be another error.

  79. avatar admin says:

I could live a little longer if I never again see the following subjects brought up on this blog:

    1. The need for Mitch Fritz

    2. The hate for Jon Sim

    3. Botta whining about Comments

    CB

  80. avatar joey303 says:

Thanks CB – I agree whole heartedly

  81. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I wish you a long and healthy live Botta but I’d probably up your life insurance instead of counting on that (UNTIL MR. SNOW fixes the first two).

  82. avatar dmen77 says:

yeah Chris we could all do without #3.

    Haha just kidding buddy.

You are the king of IslandersPointBlank. Most of us have absolutely no problems with your rules, even if we like to break them from time to time.

It’s just like in the game. I know if I cross-check a Rag I might get 2 min….but hey I’m going to do it anyways if I feel it’s worth it.

Solid game on the road so far!
    Woo hoo our 1st PP!

  83. avatar Kyle says:

I have been an Islander fan for 20 years, because that’s how old I am and I have never liked the way our powerplay works more than this season. Lots of positives

  84. avatar admin says:

AM (71): Yes, I would think a trade like that is possible. That’s one of the biggest reasons to stay so close to the cap floor.

Kevin Fitz (73): There could be some Lighthouse news – probably environmental-related – in the next few days. Check back on Newsday and with your favorite bloggers.

Strummer (78): Let me save that for my final entries leading up to the deadline. Can’t post gold like that in a Comments thread! I’ll have a lot more in True Value and other segments in the next two weeks…CB

  85. avatar isles316 says:

    Nice call ref.

  86. avatar isles316 says:

I’m coming out and saying it, but MacDonald should be in net tonight. Danis looks terrible and I think MacDonald earned another start in a big game like tonight.

    Awful.

  87. avatar admin says:

There’s that Gomez end-to-end thing I mentioned in the pre-game, although Danis muffed that…CB

  88. avatar Bob Bassen says:

They better have a viable replacement for Witt if they trade him. Would miss his e d g e! Poor call on Park but Guerin got away with an obvious hook. Amazing the money Comrie and Guerin are getting paid but can’t seem to muster up the energy on the ice.

  89. avatar dmen77 says:

Phantom penalty and a phantom save

This is the kind of goal that will break our backs

  90. avatar Kyle says:

Nicky L (76)… Yes I remember he was in the Parrish/ Sopel trade. I’m just saying that Tambellini is just like another guy Milbury traded for to be a blue chip prospect, Justin Papineau.

Wowww Yann Danis, he’s gonna be someone we all fondly remember (I.e. Oleg Kvasha) when we are hopefully good one day

  91. avatar joey303 says:

    Isles316 – 86
Terrible goal – but Macdonald has given up many of those this year – heck – Billy Smith gave up many a bad goal back when

  92. avatar Otter says:

Hate to see the Isles lose a game, especially vs. the Rangers but I wouldn’t mind just seeing them whale on one another for the rest of the game…maybe drop the gloves a few times. Seems like the rivalry has lost it’s edge recently.

  93. Weak Danis. Guess we did see Gomez go end to end, and score. The Islanders are looking good, though. I generally prefer the team go into the third tied or behind. It makes me feel better than when they go in with a lead. Lots more period to play.

  94. avatar Otter says:

Ha, not two secs after I wrote that…

  95. avatar rob says:

Reitz should be suspended for stuff like that – that is as dirty as any play in hockey

  96. avatar isles316 says:

    Agreed Joey, just saying.

Thats exactly what the Isles needed. A group effort stand up for each other session.

  97. avatar Pat says:

    Way to go Bergie

  98. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    Nice passion, but Bergie should have been T H R O W I N G EM!

  99. avatar Islanders1984 says:

This is why sean bergenheim should be signed for a few more years. The guy is all heart, i know some will disagree with taht statement, but Bergenheim is a solid young players

  100. avatar Islesphan25 says:

The kids are starting to come together and now are sticking up for each other… These are things you build on

  101. avatar MJS says:

Great scrap between Bergy and Prucha… Bergy should do that more…

  102. avatar dmen77 says:

Reitz better get a major for that. That kind of crap (for lack of a better word) ends guys’ careers.

Nice job by Bergie going after someone, even if it’s Prucha

  103. avatar Cruicky says:

I would dearly love to see Sim score at least one friggin goal tonight. It would be great.

  104. avatar NickyL says:

Id hate to see us lose to the rangers but a loss gets us closer to a possible #1 pick.

  105. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Yes, Danis should have stopped the goal but Gomez never gets the shot off if Martinek simply steps up into Gomez rathern then continuing to back up and give up the d-zone without contest.

Glad to see Bergy whup ass but that scrum could have turned real ugly for the Isles.

That is a definite intent to injure Bergy.

  106. avatar The Beast says:

Can we replace the Sim sucks rants with Tambellini sucks? Part validity, part novelty.

  107. avatar Otter says:

No place for that bush league crap. Kneeing should be a double minor at least. It’s cheap and it’s dangerous.

  108. avatar JOE RVC says:

during the bergie fight jaffe yells out this is the fly weight …. jaffe fly weight is for like 115lbs da

  109. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    OK..Bergie had a charlie horse…understood. Sign Hilbert!

  110. avatar rob says:

They haven’t gotten Mottau back for earlier this season but when Reitz comes out of the box they better make him pay for that dirty play – it is so disrespectful to go after another players knee that stuff can lead to career ending or altering injuries…see Michael Peca

  111. avatar joey303 says:

Rough crowd here —Point Bank 1983:
John316: Smith sucks -cant believe he went swimming on that Dionne goal
Bill41: Billy Carroll cant score to save his life -trade him
Isles1980: Gord Lane is soooo slow I cant watch him
CB- do you think the Isles can trade Kallur and McEwen + a 3rd rounder and get Coffey?
Torrey is killing this team – Alex McKendry? Kevin Chevaldayoff?

  112. avatar Dmarie says:

Hey CB..glad to see you’re back up an running in time for the game thread :)
Islanders ~ Rangers always a fan favorite, brings out the best is some..
Enjoy the game have a good night!
    ~Dmarie

  113. avatar Kyle says:

Where’s Chris Simon when we need him? Reitz wouldn’t walk for months if ever again if we still have Simon.

P.S. Sorry for all the comments CB I never usually do this but its a boring wednesday night

  114. avatar Islanders1984 says:

I wish we could do something to stop the potvin sucks chant

  115. avatar Michael says:

It really looked like he stuck his knee out their in a dirty way.

Jackman has been talkin to Reitz all night. Look for Jackman to seek a little revenge.

  116. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

I’ll take a nice Baily to Okposo goal on this PP. So far we have ourselves a pretty good game here and the kids look just fine. I wouldn’t miss Comrie if he is trades one bit, but I think losing Miss Duff is the real deal breaker for me.

  117. avatar Kevin Fitz says:

imagine how good Okposo is gonna be when he has some good players around him

  118. avatar AM says:

Great power-play by the younger guys. Guerin looks finished this game.

  119. avatar nhlfan says:

    Joey 303 #112….priceless….

  120. avatar Dmarie says:

Ok..can someone tell me why Witt took the penalty there?..and the two guys that attacked him got zip?

  121. avatar Jim M says:

anyone else think Okposo is a 40 goal scorer in 4-5 years?? mannn hes got alot of talent

  122. avatar dmen77 says:

Dmarie(121) Because it really really seems like that sometimes the NHL will put the Rags in the playoffs at all costs

  123. avatar joey303 says:

JimM 122 – he sure looks like it – get him a center

  124. avatar Islanders1984 says:

JIm M i would say quicker then 4 or 5 years Okposo will reach that mark

  125. avatar isles316 says:

The Isles have completely outplayed the Rangers in this game.

The Isles have been sloppy at times in their own end but the Isles had more chances and are playing with more heart.

  126. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I think we are missing a heavyweight badly! We really need an enforcer. Jackman and Witt are ok as supplementary players who are tough but we are missing an enforcer bad.

  127. avatar Kyle says:

    Second Period Thoughts…

    1. Rangers played better/ Isles played worse from 1st period

    2. Thankfully not too much Jeff Tambellini

    3. Check out John Buccigross’ ESPN column, Bucci believes in us next year

  128. avatar Jim M says:

Really hope Bailey can develop to be that center… nothing would make me happier for the isles to pull this one out to keep the rangers tumbling.

  129. avatar Joe says:

Exactly why we need an enforcer.

  130. avatar JOE RVC says:

why wont witt ever drop the gloves ??.i know hes a tough guy but stop shoving and drop someone knock someones lights out.i would

  131. avatar JPinVA says:

How about the great game Comeau is having… add that to ANOTHER strong game by Bergy and it looks like the only thing SW will have to complain about is Not being able to see Eisenhower Park from his roof.
CB, did you get your cable back, or are you getting the NHL.COM and $4 cups of java at Panera?

  132. avatar kevin says:

lets be real here, reitz isnt getting payback, dont get started. going to catch up on the game on tivo brb

  133. avatar guerin13 says:

reitz should sit a game or two for sticking his leg out. that was dangerous and stupid. great game though. both teams came to play tonight. danis has to stop the gomez shot. so far joey mac prob has the edge to come back here next year over danis – that is if either do.

  134. avatar Islanders1984 says:

Jack Hillen is having a decent game as well

  135. avatar Islesphan25 says:

All the young kids are playing better…and that whats what counts as the season comes to a close…THE KIDS ARE BETTER than when they started…..AND the ARE!!!

  136. avatar JPinVA says:

For all you folks who can’t wait until Witt is EX-Isled… YOU’RE NUTS.
Hilbert has been playing really well.. but I really hope that next year his roster spot is taken by a kid like Colliton, who can PK and adds 20 lbs.
One thing I will definitely give gordon credit for… the Isle PP, even though they don’t finish, they sure do move the puck a whole lot better than they have in 8 years.
KO..PP…PK… He’s just getting better and better every game. this would be a nice game for a little fisticuffs from Kyle…

  137. avatar JPinVA says:

    Joe,
Brendan has dropped them when he’s HAD to. But if you’ve ever seen him throw, you’d know that he’s more valuable on the ice than in “the ring”.
You can’t be too crazy about the Isles best defensive d-man being in the box for an extended period.

  138. avatar joey303 says:

Witt playing tonite like he wants to get a #1 for him – Awesome

  139. avatar isles99 says:

    isles 3 rags 2

  140. I see a good chemistry developing between the kids lines. Comeau-Bailey-KO and Hilbert (not really a kid)-Nielsen-Bergenheim have been massive! Is it me or is there a little less chemistry mix between the vet line? The fourth is doing its job, and causing some havoc, so I have no problem with them.

The Islanders look itching to score a goal.

  141. avatar isles316 says:

Unless you get a #1 or a great prospect do you really want to trade Witt? We are going to be looking for a d-man like him for next year.

  142. avatar jellyroll says:

    Jackman!

  143. avatar isles99 says:

i have a feeling we’ll pull this one out….btw, thanks cb!

  144. avatar dmen77 says:

damn Bailey needs to find the twine there!

  145. avatar Bloodyskull says:

I will trade Comrie for a right handed Vapor or possibly congress could use his salary as part of the stimulus package. He clearly does not earn his money.

  146. avatar isles316 says:

We are getting chances. Just need a bounce.

  147. avatar jon from nj says:

the 2nd PowerPlay unit pales in comparison to the younger guys tonight…and have been for the previous games. Comrie and Guerin need to start putting the puck in the net.

  148. avatar dose says:

this is a helleva hockey game. a solid honest game.

  149. avatar Pat says:

Were doing everything but putting the puck in the net. Let’s get one. I hate losing to the Rangers.

  150. avatar randy boyd says:

Can anyone tell me the benefit to this organization of having Sim in the lineup? Ditto Comrie, although maybe they hope he might actually score a goal and fake someone into trading a bag of pucks for him.

If Tambellini is in the lineup, why not on the powerplay? What magic is Gordon afraid of breaking up?

Finally, you can’t teach hands, and Bailey simply doesn’t have them. Also, Okposo is back to not shooting again. If only we had an NHL coach to work with him.

Losing to the Rangers really sucks.

  151. avatar isles316 says:

anyone else notice how dead the garden sounds?

  152. avatar isles316 says:

Randy Boyd: Dustin Brown had 1 goal his rookie year in 30 games and 5 points. You think he turned out all right?

  153. avatar jon from nj says:

josh bailey is 19 years old…i think we can give him at least 2 more games, before we throw him off the plank, dont you think? but only 2….because, you know…we’re in the midst of a playoff race here.

  154. avatar nhlfan says:

If Guerin didn’t play on the power play would anyone notice him on the ice tonight? He has gotten old fast. We can only pray that he gives up his NTC.

  155. avatar jon from nj says:

Well…Guerin needs to start scoring for a team to actually want him enough to give up his NTC. Same with Hillary Duf..I mean Comrie.

  156. avatar 7th Woman says:

I would hate to see this be a 2-1 game. They’ve put up a good effort. I hope they at least tie it up.

  157. avatar nhlfan says:

It going to suck to lose this game on a terrible goal.

  158. avatar Bloodyskull says:

Boyd, settle down Beavis. this kid just turned 19 and would be in the minors if he were with any other franchise.
Isles 316 is making a valid point.

  159. avatar HilbertSnipe says:

    agreed jon and 316!

  160. avatar dmen77 says:

    See comment #89

I said this is the kind of goal that breaks our backs. I really think if we lose this game without scoring again (2-1, 3-1), Joey Mac might see a majority of the starts the rest of the way

  161. avatar jon from nj says:

Stupid penalty…that should do it. Damn Rangers…we had the chance to break that team’s back tonight.

  162. avatar Bloodyskull says:

nice dive Phelps I mean Naslund

  163. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Chris, can you get on the phone and find out what scouts are in attendance please?

Also, I hear Guerin doesn’t want to waive his NTC because of family. I respect that. I would think he’d like those fat playoff checks he won’t get with the Isles and be understanding the Isles need assets and he can be resigned during the summer. Do you think he’ll waive or not?

  164. avatar isles316 says:

Danis always looks behind him when he makes a save. A sign of an unconfident goalie. I hate seeing that.

  165. avatar randy boyd says:

ok, ok. I’ll lay off the 19 year old. It’s just, you know, in this whole suck ass season couldn’t we just have one nice moment where he buries that one?

  166. avatar isles316 says:

It’s not over yet, but Danis got outplayed tonight. Pretty much that simple. Otherwise it was a fairly evenly and well played game.

  167. avatar dmen77 says:

It looks like we’ll lose but lets take some positives that if the Rangers continue to play like this, they still will not make the playoffs.

Danis made some good saves tonight but he didn’t stop the one he should have stopped and it killed us, being we are a 30th place team.

  168. avatar jon from nj says:

I hope when they come to the Coliseum next month, the NYR are out of the playoff race and we can help bury them…I hate losing to them. Too often.

  169. avatar admin says:

What do you say about that game? The Rangers didn’t do much, but they won. The Islanders played okay, but didn’t generate enough great chances or score. The Garden was quiet for most of the night. One soft goal was the difference.

List the Islanders who played well. I liked Comeau. Thought young Jack Hillen again did not look out of place.

I’ll be here for a while if you want to talk about the game…CB

  170. avatar Cruicky says:

Can’t crap on Danis when the team only scores 1.

  171. avatar Daryl C says:

Always love a physical game and this one had lots of that.

  172. avatar 7th Woman says:

Had Park been lucky enough to hit the net with that one goal, the outcome would have been different. Shame no one else even came close.

  173. avatar kevin says:

mcdonald should be playing in games like these. danis cant let in goals like that when trying to fight for a job next year

  174. avatar Islanders1984 says:

CB what did you think of bergenheims game?

  175. avatar Pat says:

Gordon looked pissed at the end of the game. I wonder what happened besides us losing again.

  176. avatar AM says:

    CB,

On an unrelated Islanders note, If I told you I brought someone to a hockey game for the first time and tonight was it, I don’t know about you but I think they’d be so turned off to watch or go to another game. I feel like these game are happening more and more often especially with the Rangers. I don’t know about you but this is definitely not what I want hockey to evolve into.

People comment about people’s goal totals but pretty much you can’t even go by it unless your a ridiculously special player. I understand the players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger, but something’s got to change.

I love all the Isles/Rangers games but I was being put to sleep tonight and that’s unacceptable. Is there any changes that could be made?

  177. avatar jon from nj says:

I can crap on Danis when he lets a goal in like that.

  178. avatar TIM says:

K.O looked great again tonight CB i thought the kidline played well and bergy as well he has played well since his return, looked as though danis got very lucky tonight, puck was hitting him and he would always look behind him score could have bin higher, very soft second ranger goal

  179. avatar dmen77 says:

I liked Comeau, Okposo, Hilbert and Bergenheim.

Bailey was good but I would like to see him bury that shot in front.

Park hits the crossbar but we don’t count on him to score, we count on him to do exactly what he did tonight.

Comrie and Guerin really disappointed me.

Danis lost his chance in my eyes. You just CAN’T give up a goal like that, not in a big game for this team at this point in time, also when you are fighting for a job next year with the other backup. Obviously Ricky’s workload needs to be severely cut next season, we just can’t have our #2 flubbing a shot he needs to stop.

Very disappointing loss but well-played. As I just said earlier, I think we can take more positives than the Rags can take besides 2 points. More efforts by them like tonight and they’ll find themselves out of the playoffs.

  180. avatar isles99 says:

streit and KO stood out to me tonight. i see KO is making strides every night but i just don’t get that feeling with josh bailey.

  181. avatar MT says:

    Kudos to Bergie and Comeau

  182. avatar rob says:

I agree about Comeau Chris… i like him a lot… do you think he is a guy we can count on next year. Better question has he earned Gordon’s trust and respect to land a wing spot next season? Id say why the hell not he has the potential for 20 annually.

  183. avatar Chris TMC says:

    My thoughts FWIW:

    * That goal they scored was on a penalty on Park that never should have been a penalty. Park was pushed into the goalie, yet he gets the penalty. But if people sit on our goalies head, its fine.

    * Defense looked pretty good tonight.

    * I wish that the Isles had tested Queen Henrik more.

    * We hit so many posts, if only one of them had gone in… :(

    * Danis let up a weak goal no doubt, but the boy still let in only 2 goals… IMO you cant really fault a backup goalie that lets in only two goals. You generally dont win games scoring one goal.

    * This was not a bad game but I really missed Doug Weight tonight.

CB (84): Nicce! I am looking forward to THAT EIS being handed in, I hope that is whats about to happen. It will be great to know that they are moving to the next step. Any move forward is important and worth celebrating IMO!

  184. avatar Islanders1984 says:

We really need to give bailey more time. He is 19 years old. He jumped from Juniors to the NHL. He has played pretty well for being one of the youngest guys in the best hockey league in the world

  185. avatar Shoogah says:

Everyone makes mistakes. Mac could have easily reacted the same way to the Gomez shot. I’m thankful that the young guys are learning from their mistakes now and not when we’re fighting for a playoff spot.

  186. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Having Hillen, Campoli and Gervais just seems redundant, imo. Maybe if Hillen can work with Jackman’s conditioning coach in the off -season…

  187. avatar JPinVA says:

    AM,
your post puzzles me. I understand the soccer-like final score… but it’s a bad cover to judge this book by.
It looked like a pretty physical game, with some good scoring chances on both sides. I’ve seen some Nyquil games recently, but this wasn’t one of them… you may wanna stick to X-games.
And when the puck hits a goalie, it’s usually not because he’s “LUCKY”. Danis looked a little shakey at times, but he seemed to be in good position for the first shots. You really can’t kill the goaltending for this team when they’ve consistently given up under three since the “system tweak”.
Goodbye Hillary. Adios Jeff. We’ll send you post cards Andy.
If they can upgrade those three spots, resign Weight and Guerin for leadership and professionalism… I don’t see why this team can’t be competetive next year.

  188. avatar mtrico says:

CB, after watching this game, I really am starting to think that if the Penguins can get their act together, the Rangers may get squeezed out of the playoffs. In fact, if not for their goaltending, I think they would be out. Thoughts?

  189. avatar Bob Bassen says:

I think Bailey is fine…and once he adds about 20 lbs of muscle…no worries.

  190. avatar admin says:

oh mtrico, if I go there…I’ll say this. On our radio show Don La Greca thought it was pretty much a slam dunk the NYR make the playoffs. I told him I didn’t agree…CB

  191. avatar Vlad from Brooklyn says:

It is not Danis who lost the game. It’s inability to finish scoring chances. How many shots were wide to the net? And it was team’s decision to loose this game in the 3rd period. I would not be saying anything if I have not seen when Isles want to win.
I’m not pleased with the loss, but had fun watching Bergy and Streit. As much I want Comrie off the team, he was fighting tonight and tried to make something happen. I guess, JMac gets the start on LI tomorrow.

  192. avatar JPinVA says:

    CB,
I really like the play of Hillen… but he’s listed at 5’11″ 200lbs… he looks a lot more like 5’9″ 170. Do I just need a bigger TV?

  193. avatar MIKE says:

Andy Hilbert can play on my team anytime. Good team guy, sound defense, good penalty killer, and will score 15 goals this year.

  194. avatar isles316 says:

I thought the Isles generated enough chances to win compared to the Rangers. This one was a tough one.

  195. avatar Bob Bassen says:

Hilbert may not score as much as Guerin but he never seems to to take even a shift off….great positional play…great skater…more passion and hustle then both Comrie and Guerin combined tonight…

  196. avatar Mike from Philly says:

C.B – I don’t know about you, but the thought of John Tavares playing along side Kyle Okposo is pretty exciting!

  197. avatar dmen77 says:

I disagree Vlad. A team knows their opponent and knows the kind of game that gets played. 75% of the time the Rangers are involved in 2-1, 3-2 games. Lundqvist is a good goalie and keeps the goals against down, no matter what the shot total.

If Danis had given up a one-timer from the slot or side of the net, yeah it’s not his fault….tonight the second one that got past him was a softee from straight on. He HAS to stop that shot if he’s on the team and the team is going to be successful.

If you want to give him credit for the saves he did make, I’m right with you.

However, in the game of hockey, the goalie who stops 48 of 50 takes the loss to a goalie who stops 19 of 20.

It’s very cruel sometimes but it separates the elite from the pretenders.

  198. avatar admin says:

JPinVA (193): There’s a decent chance Jack Hillen might see this, so I apologize to him in advance. Jack can play on my team, but he is not 5-11, 200 pounds.

Bridgeport beat Hartford tonight, 1-0. Avery challenged Sound Tigers goalie Nathan Lawso and Bridgeport went after him most of the night. Lawson with the shutout, McLean with the goal…CB

  199. avatar kevin says:

how about we get tavares first…… and as for danis, had he made that save, its still 1-1

  200. avatar kevin says:

awsome, im very happy bridge went after him. i hope thats the same for every AHL team. i can hear the chants but wont post it.

  201. avatar Chris TMC says:

Kevin (200): While your math is beyond reproach, I still maintain that its a bit unreasonable to demand your backup let up only one goal in an entire game.

  202. avatar isles316 says:

Interesting CB. One thing I noticed about Bridgeport in the game I saw is that they stick up for each other and really play hard. Good to hear that they did for Lawson.

  203. avatar james says:

People need to relax with the Danis comments. Even the best goalies in the league give up soft goals. And for those that are screaming that MacD should have played let’s not forget how many awful goals come to mind this year. The first that comes to mind is that puck that was coming into the crease about 3 mph he went to poke check missed it and it slid through his legs. S*it happens. Good game by Bergie and Comeau. Nielsen bw comeau and okposo sounds good to me. Reitz is terrible. Guerin has taken over for Comrie as someone who refuses to work hard. Get him outta here

  204. avatar isles316 says:

Chris TMC, I agree you cant completely dump on Danis but that was an awful goal to give up. My cat might have swatted that out of mid air, he is fast.

Danis though, is always looking behind him and never looks sure of himself and doesn’t really light me up with confidence.

  205. avatar JPinVA says:

I don’t think that’s cause for an apology. the guy can play… Of the four 5-6 D candidates I think he is the best puck mover, and does a nice job distributing the puck on the 2nd PP.
Not everybody has to be Zedno Chara.

  206. avatar drew says:

CB, I haven’t heard much about Lawson, but his numbers are pretty good. What’s the scoop on this kid? Thanks.

  207. avatar kevin says:

chris tmc, that goal was garbage and he needs to stop those if he is fighting for a spot as back-up next year. that was game deciding. and all game he looked out of position. also, bridgeport had a line of fritz-morency-Rechlicz. tell me that isnt a bad-ass tough line?

  208. avatar dmen77 says:

Sorry guys, I know I’m really hard on Danis tonight but I look at it like this:

As Butchie said during the pregame I believe, you always bring your A game when you come to MSG wearing Islander blue, white and orange, there are no exceptions.

I agree that there were many guys tonight who didn’t even bring their C game, but unfortunately the goaltenders get the final say and that’s why they are credited with the win or loss at the end of the night.

Danis had a B+ game for most of the night but gets a big fat F for the shot he flubbed giving him a B- for the night. That B- was enough for our 30th place squad to take a loss against a now-playoff eligible team.

Joey Mac has given up some bad ones, Danis gives up a bad one…..if we truly want to be a playoff team in the next year or two, NONE of our goaltenders can give up bad ones in a tied game. It just cannot happen.

I HATE losing to the Rags at all costs but it’s another loss and another step closer to drafting Tavares/Hedman which in the end is what this team desparately needs.

Sad to say but the only packback for tonight is losing to the Canes tomorrow so they get those 2 pts back on the Rags

    Good night to all!

  209. avatar StevieL says:

Danis is fine, 35 saves. What should we win every game 1-0? Gotta score! I’m really down on Guerin. He seems to have checked out. Not so much the lack of goal scoring but his physical play has really fallen off. Seems he doesn’t want to attract attn to himself for the trade deadline. I don’t see room on this team next year for Guerin , Weight and Silly! The kid’s look great.

  210. avatar Coach B says:

Off topic but a good night for the
Sarnia trio in a 7-4 win over Owen Sound. While watching the Islanders game, I was listening to CHOK (1070) which comes in clear at night where I live. Mark Katic had 2 goals, 1 assist, Justin Dibenedetto 1 goal, 1 assist and 1 goal for Matt Martin.

  211. avatar isles316 says:

well said demn #209. No big deal in the big picture for tonight but that can’t happen next year.

  212. avatar Coach B says:

Bruno Gervais has never played better. Hope he can continue through the end of the season with the improvement he has made recently and be in the plans for the future.

  213. avatar BringBackNyles says:

An odd game, in that MSG was dead tonight. I think a lot had to do with NYR fans wanting to lose in hopes the coach and/or GM-for-life would get fired, or at least demoted to doing Optimum HD ads with the slick talking guy

  214. avatar Bedell says:

woulda liked us to have one tonight but i guess its just another step towards JT. Anyway I was in hartford tonight and I went to the soundtigers game. Lawson looked great, he was always well positioned and made every save look easy. he also played the puck pretty well. Avery was terrible he would try to do everything himself and ended up losing the puck and he never came back defensivly. Then he kept knocking into lawson, challenged him to fight, and then threw alot of cheap shots at everybody but he did not get one penalty.

  215. avatar admin says:

Thanks for the Bport report, Bedell. And thank you to everyone who contributed tonight. Answering a popular question of the last week or so, I’m working on my final piece on the 5-7-9 Bailey move, a True Value on Billy Guerin and hoping to poke around any trade possibilities. Have a good night, everyone…CB

  216. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I think the Rangers got some very unfair calls.

IF reports are accurate and Guerin will not waive his NTC to help the team gain assets then he darn well better start playing better. He looks like he is floating.

  217. avatar isles316 says:

Guerin looked about as interested tonight as I did when my girlfriend but on the biggest loser last night.

  218. avatar Isles1972 says:

I liked all of the kids tonight. Even though the wins are there, they seem to be getting it and playing as a unit. The older guys are really starting to look old. CB, to me it looks like the older guys are playing at a much slower level. Do you think it takes away any momentum the kid lines bring?
Also, game after game, I look at the shots on goal, and every night the Isles give up 30-40 shots a game (with the odd exception). This needs to change IMO.

  219. avatar ken says:

just got back from the garden. the boys played well, but 1 stupid goal was the difference. Quiet crowd.

  220. avatar Cruicky says:

Like RD has never let in a bad goal. That is just crazy.

  221. avatar Chris TMC says:

Isles1972 (219): you say that “the older guys are really starting to look old” but what older guys are you talking about? Streit and Witt were great tonight, they are in their 30s. Comrie didnt look good- he is in his 20s.

I think people are too fixated on the notion of age. It makes more sense IMO to just look at players and not a DOB.

  222. avatar Isles1972 says:

Chris, Guerin looked awful. Striet and Witt played great, but I think Witt is too slow for this system. Sim, although he played well, just doesn’t fit either. Comrie, I know he is only 27, but he is older than the kids and looks super slow.
When the kids are on the ice, it just seems like something is going to happen. I don’t get that feeling with other players.

  223. avatar kevin says:

cruicky 221: dp isnt earning a spot for back-up next year. and i doubt he didnt get abused for it…everyone does but you can see it was a rookie mistake ( being that he is now at the nhl level ) and trying to fight for a spot next year means he cant have slip-ups like this, and it wasnt like it was 4-1 already and he let it up, o and it was against the rags and while i want to go into everygame hoping for a win ( but being happy no matter what the score is at the end) i really want to bea the rangers and he blew it. i know the isles didnt help him by not scoring a bunch but it wasnt just the goal, he looked out of position. if he didnt let that in, it is still 1-1 so who knows, we could have scored or got multiple goals, but……..

  224. avatar Lorne says:

Ranger fans should be proud, they beat a minor league hockey team tonight. Here comes the turnaround.

  225. I thought the Islanders looked pretty good for most of the game. They hit some agonizing posts, but they generated excellent chances. I do fault Danis for the soft goal because saying that the goalie can’t win unless the team scores more, well, the team needs the goalie to be solid especially with soft chances. I fault the Islanders for not finishing those excellent chances. Effort is wonderful, but not enough, and losing to the Rags is not acceptable even in a sucky season. The Rags won once in the last nine, and the Islanders have stayed competitive for many games this season. These kinds of 2-1 losses (I don’t really bother with EN goals because they are pointless) need to be fixed next season. If the rest of the Eastern Conference can do me a favor, and ensure that the Rags miss the playoffs, I’d be much appreciated. I love when the over inflated rangers can’t win. Too many big contracts to too many underachieving players.

#223 you are right I cant wait for comrie guerin and sim to get off the ice.

  227. avatar Chris TMC says:

Isles1972 (223): Guerin did not do anything “awful” IMO… but I didnt mention him as looking particularly good, either. His center is on IR, Im sure thats part of it. But its not like he is F-ing up left and right, either. I saw Kyle make more mistakes than Guerin tonight. Im not holding that against him at all, but if we are going to be fair and objective here it is simply true.

I cant really buy that “Witt is too slow for this system” stuff, though. When is Witt regularly getting beat because of slowness? When was the last time he played a game where he was ineffective all night? People bring up how he looked earlier- yeah he looked bad for a stretch before (when the rest of the team looked bad too I might add) but he does not look bad now. I mean, watch the guy- he has been playing much better. I think that people got it in their heads that he looks bad and now they just think it and say it, no matter what he does.

Its just like how people are still posting here and elsewhere how bad Bruno Gervais is playing. He gets crapped on in a lot of places, but the simple truth is that he has actually been looking damn good for a stretch of games.

People make a judgment about a player at one point when it makes sense… but the problem that arises is when they stick by that judgment blindly and stop evaluating things anymore- because they believe they already know the deal and have the player all figured out. In that case, they do not even notice when things change.

Witt and Gervais have both played quite good lately. But how many people are saying so? And how many people are still bashing them both?

As far as the last part goes, I think the reason that people get so excited when “the kids” play is in many ways psychological… the young players are the ones that have the potential, that optimism about what they could someday be. Personally, I am happy when I see good hockey… Im happy when its Streit, Im happy when its Kyle, Im happy when its Weight, Im happy when its Nielsen, Im happy when its Witt, Im happy when its Bailey, its not all about age its about the player himself and what he brings to the table.

The youth part, when its a kid doing good things, is nice but I think some people go overboard with it. If Guerin scored a goal people are like “big f-ing deal, score another” (to the teams leading goal scorer, no less!) but if Bergie scores one people would be hysterical with joy. People overestimate who they view as young players and bash who they see as old players. I mean, Comrie and Tambs are very close in age, one has proven something in the NHL and one hasnt, but look at the difference in the way they are treated! I understand making allowances when a player is just getting acclimated to the NHL, but beyond that I really think that people need to get over the age stuff and just look at a player for what he is.

i thought the guidelines said we cant talk about the rangers here.

  229. avatar doc says:

Stop the hating on Bruno… other than Streit, Bruno has been the Islanders best defensemen this season.

    Good game tonight.

An unfortunate “easy” goal that ALL goalies have given up in their careers several times over… beat us tonight. What can you do?

Hi Chris, traveling in the midwest – did not see the game – but noted that the SoundTigers promoted Joel Rechlicz and he played in the game tonight. can “The Wrecker” get the call to the Island soon ? :)

Well, I H A T E losing to the Rag$ – but we gain two points in the Tavares Derby :)

Good night all – interested to hear what news is on Lighthouse……more important to me than the games at this point….

  231. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

Nice effort tonight. Too bad about the whiff by Danis, otherwise it was an even game.
Comeau made a nice pass for the only goal. Bergy also had a good game.

Both are players I have knocked in the past. When they play well, I’ll say so.

But,let’s face it. Both are third line players at best. We still need an abundance of talent in here…..SW

  232. avatar Islebethere4u says:

I thought the Isles played ok tonight. Bad goal by Dannis but otherwise a strong game. The rags on the other hand, being desperate for a win played uptempo and dirty at times (i.e. the Bergenheim hit). A pretty even game except for a few bad bounces. Comrie couldn’t finish at all on a couple of prime chances. Gervais is better of late. Great pass from Comeau. Some nic hits even without Hunter in.

  233. avatar Chickendirt says:

I gotta say this, as dissapointed as many are in this seasons results, it’s all gonna be well worth it three seasons from now.

You’re look back at this season and all the first round losses and wonder why we didn’t go this route sooner. I’m glad Snow hasn’t gone for the quick fix or try to assemble another team full of left overs on July 1st.

Next year this team probably won’t be playoff worthy but they will be profoundly better having built around a lot of these kids.

  234. avatar Cruicky says:

7th woman has some pretty strong feeling regarding some of the players. I wonder if she is polite to their faces, or is she a stand up girl and tells them that she thinks they suck to their face. I doubt it. She should be far more professional. She is luck to get the oppurtunity, and to be accepted by the Islanders community. Have some professionalism my dear. Or pretend to have some…

  235. avatar Alan says:

Comrie, Witt and Guerin need to be peddled off for picks. Can Weight still be traded. Based on the prognosis of the injury, he should be back by playoff time.

  236. avatar Jim says:

Botta has this board believing the Isles are a young team on the upstart. He NOW says the Isles were honest with their fan base by indicating there will be a lengthy struggle, meanwhile at the beginning of the season he chided pundits who predicted the Isles to finish last and said it was “ridiculous” to say the Isles would be out of things by the trade deadline.

Now he has spun the situation so much that he cannot run from his own lies.

Interesting, according to Botta, the Isles are a young team with tremendous future. Do you guys realize that last night’s Isles team was not even younger than the Rangers. Look it up:

    Ranger team average age: 26.8
    Isles team average age: 27.0

Yet, Botta has everyone believing the Isles are a “feel good” story. While Rangers, in a playoff hunt, have their fans calling for their coach’s head. They need a spin doctor like Botta.

In my opinion, Botta is on the Isles payroll and pretending not to be. I mean, I give him credit. Every team should hire a spin doctor like this. He has some us believing things that truly aren’t there. Good job.

  237. avatar derek says:

    Hey Jim,

Last night’s Isles line-up was average age of 26.4. That’s including a 37 year old who most likely will be gone next year, 2 goalies older than our #1, and a handful of other players, over 30 that will not be back next year or have barely any significance to the future of this Isles team. Get the facts straight before you start spewing nonsense. Yes the overall team average is 27+ and that, most likely includes 3 37 year olds and a 34 & 32 year old not even on the team.
You bash CB, but at least do your homework before you do.

  238. avatar Jethro09 says:

Tough loss by the Isles. Bad goal by Danis gift-wrapped that one for the Rags. Overall, I thought the boys played well. Witt’s best game in weeks. Okposo, Comeau and Bailey look good together. Streit was great as well.

I can’t believe how useless Wade Redden has become. Redden used to be great. Now, he plays as if he could care less if they win or lose. He reminds me of Roger Dorn from “Major League”, the third-basemen who wouldn’t dive for grounders. Thank God the Isles signed Streit instead of Redden.

  239. avatar Cahoward28 says:

    Jim,

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. You bore all of us. You’re same old story on every comment thread is repetitive and no one cares anymore. Congrats on your Rags beating us last night.

  240. avatar Jim says:

Actually, no…. this is the ages listed by the NHL. Vey easy, all ages are next to the names.

    19
    25
    24
    23
    28
    27
    24
    38
    28
    23
    27
    32
    24
    20
    32
    31
    31
    24
    23

    Equals 513

513 divided by the 19 players is 27.0.

  241. avatar Cruicky says:

Jim, or whatever your name is. You have issues pal, big ones.

  242. avatar derek says:

Curses Jim, you foiled my plan. It looks as if I’m the one that hasn’t done my homework. I looked at the ages at the beginning of the season. You may have won this battle, but…

  243. avatar Jethro09 says:

Hey Jim (237), why don’t you go spew your nonsense somewhere else?

  244. avatar islesinfo says:

cb is a joke go away

  245. avatar Jethro09 says:

Cruicky 221: Danis didn’t “lose” the game for them, but the weak goal has become a staple in his game. You can see that Danis has skill and can play at the NHL level, but he has a tendency to let in one terrible goal per game. At the NHL level, you can’t do that. That’s why Danis has been in the minors until this year. He’s inconsistent.

  246. avatar Jim says:

What can I say? You can pick on me all you want, call me a Ranger fan all you want. I call a spade a spade. I call em the way I see em. I find it interesting that we are told by the Isles are a young, rebuilding team. Yet, we started the season with I believe 11 players in the opening night lineup 30 or over.

We are then told that the Isles are a “team of the future” while we iced a team last night older than a team whose fan base and media is calling for the coaches head. All posts last night mention “the kids” and how we should be “proud” of the effort. Meanwhile, we had an older team than the opposition.

    It makes no sense to.

  247. avatar Cruicky says:

You said that two, three or four times. we understand that. Do you have anything else?? Good.

  248. avatar Chris TMC says:

But it DOES make sense to desperately hang around a board of someone you dont like, talking about a team you dont like? To create name after name and dozens of emails just to try and post here? Whatever… you have no cred here, buddy.

  249. avatar Jethro09 says:

Jim, nobody’s picking on you. We just want you to go away. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that nobody here wants to read your nonsense. Just go away.

  250. avatar Cruicky says:

Jethro – I think it worked. Jim whoever has left the building…

  251. avatar kevin fitz says:

This is year one of the rebuild, Jim. We do not have 20 players under the age of 25 in our system that are NHL ready. So they needed to fill out the roster with veterans. Next year the team will be younger as we will have more NHL ready prospects. This is not a one year process. But I do not know why I am trying to talk sense to someone that is just here to cause trouble.

  252. avatar cgs878 says:

I think that we all need to believe that the Islanders will be a great team in 3-4 years. Otherwise, we’d just stop supporting them and start liking the Rangers. Eeeek, the horror! Why is Jim trying to stop our feel-good vibes? This is a feel-good, support the Islanders no matter what, blog! IMO Jim’s a poopy head meanie.

  253. avatar Schultz39 says:

Okposo has really turned it on – him and Comeau will be a great tandem for years to come.

The Garden did sound dead last night….

Loved to see Bergie and the team stick up for each other. I just wish we had more guys who could toss the lumber.

  254. avatar Macch says:

Anyone see Josh Bailey around lately. He is starting to fade. He was much more impressive in his first couple of games. He had a good scoring opportunity last night but other than that KO and Comeau are carrying that line

  255. avatar kevin says:

how about we just ignore jim, he has nothing good to say. his facts are wrong anyway…and he is dumb

  256. avatar kevin fitz says:

Bailey could be hitting a little bit of a wall. Lots of rookies do this time of year.

  257. avatar UIF says:

Ah, enough of this “good effort” stuff. How about some wins in a meaningful game once in a while? This far in last, there aren’t many meaningful games I guess, but last night would qualify as one. Gordon’s quotes in Newsday just don’t seem very fired up at all. I wonder what his thoughts are on the rivalry and whether he considers it a big deal at all. Has anyone ever asked him? I’m just bummed no one in the organization seems to get fired up over losses anymore, regardless of what the expectations are/were for this team.

  258. avatar Marc from Troy says:

Danis shouldn’t have been playing over MacDonald last night because that was a BIG GAME? Are you people serious? So he let in a lousy goal. Because MacDonald hasn’t ever done that? Or because every freaking goalie in history hasn’t ever done that? Danis let in a bad goal, and he knows it. He’s also improved by leaps and bounds from the first time he played this year. Let’s not lose sight of that. Doesn’t mean he’s the guy to be Ricky’s backup by any stretch, but to kill him for that one goal is ridiculous.

  259. avatar Alan says:

To become a legitimate contender, a team has to bottom out, whether it’s for a year or 2

We have some parts that we could build. John Tavares could help come the ’09 draft. Maybe if we stink next season, Taylor Hall could make his way to the Island.

I’d rather be where the Isles are at than the Rangers. Redden, Gomez and Drury have so underachieved and they will be lucky to win 2 games in the first round of the playoffs.

As much as I want the Isles to win, it is imperative for the organization to get either the #1 or #2 pick and get a cornerstoen piece.

  260. avatar Tom says:

Serious question. In lieu of firing Renney don’t you think Sather should just tell the rags to lose on purpose so they can get a better draft pick. They are an 8th seeded team. The 8th seed is stupid, right?

  261. avatar cgs878 says:

Hey, where did Greg Logan go? No blog since the 15th. Strange.

Bailey has not outhustled Okposo as of late. After this summer’s bulking up, I hope he kicks it into high gear next season.

  262. avatar Marc from Troy says:

And re: Danis “has a tendency to let in one terrible goal per game”… Have you actually been watching the games over the last few weeks? With the exception of the Flyers game, Danis has been giving up only like 2 goals per game – yet, somehow, one of those two is always a “terrible goal?” Really?

I can’t believe how I’ve ended up defending Danis here, but I think it’s more that sweeping statements like the one quoted above drive me nuts – especially when they’re not supported with those minor inconveniences known as facts.

  263. avatar cgs878 says:

Never mind, the website wasn’t updating the stories & blogs properly.

  264. avatar John Keitz says:

So, how’d the game look in HD? Unfortunately, the juvenile Dolans have a spat with the NHL and they are withholding HD feeds of MSG from NHL Center Ice. The rest of us Islanders fans outside the NY area who pay big bucks to see our team in HD are being screwed by the Dolans!

  265. avatar Cruicky says:

Tom – Do you seriously think that an NHL GM would actually tell his team to lose??? This would NEVER happen. Never.

  266. avatar randy boyd says:

    Jim,

I agree that the Isles are still playing too many older players. I believe that anyone from Bridgeport who might have a chance at becoming a goalscorer and whose development is ready for the jump ahould be here in place of Sim, Comrie, Guerin, etc. I also strongly believe that this team needs a legitimate tough guy skating a regular shift every game.

What I don’t believe is that any of this is the fault of Botta. Why are you so obsessed with him? I just don’t get it

  267. avatar Jethro09 says:

Randy Boyd (267): The Isles aren’t playing too many older players. They don’t have that many young players that are ready for a full-time NHL job. They need older players to fill out the roster and to take some pressure off the few young players that are ready for full-time duty.

I want to see guys like Smith, Iggulden, Colliton, Joensuu, etc. get a chance, but lets face it: they are not guys who were NHL ready to start the season (or are now for that matter). The Isles needed to start the season with vets and if they trade vets at the deadline to open spots for some of the guys I menitoned above, great. But they couldn’t be expected to start the season with Bridgeport’s roster just for the sake of “being young”.

As for the pinheads who say the team is “not young”, they are young. The average age of the roster is insignificant. What’s sigificant is that the young players that are on the team are not only getting regular shifts, they are playing big minutes in big spots. The guys that this team is leaning on down the stretch are not John Sim, Andy Hilbert, Mike Comrie or other aging vets. Its guys like Okposo, Streit, Bailey, Comeau, Neilsen. Its those guys taht are on the powerplay. Those guys are the ones on the ice at the end of the game or in the shootout. Bruno Gervais didn’t leave the ice last night.

So what the Isles have older players on the roster? The truth is, outside of Witt, Streit, Weight, Hunter and Guerin, a total of five players on the roster, not one “vet” is being leaned on by the organization to build around for the future.

  268. avatar Jethro09 says:

Marc from Troy (263): That was my comment you chimed in on. I do watch every game. Are you saying that its impossible for a guy who only gives up two goals a game to give up one bad one a night?

For the record, I’m not hating on Danis. I like the guy and think he’s done a good job. But he has let in a lot of soft goals this season. His own coach has gone on record and said that. Do you think he says that because he doesn’t like Danis, or because its true? I think the latter.

Danis has given up more than two goals per game this season. If you like facts, check his numbers. Besides, the point is not how many goals he gives up, its how many soft ones he gives up. A goaltender can give up two goals in a game, and have one or both of them be soft. Danis gives up soft goals. There is a reason why Danis has not been a regular in the NHL till this season. Soft goals are deflating to any team, especially a young one with limited scoring ability.

If you don’t think that Danis gives up soft goals, that’s your opinion. Mine (and apparently Scott Gordon’s) is that he does. We’ll agree to disagree.

  269. avatar Chris TMC says:

You make some great points Jethro except can we PLEASE stop referring to guys in their frickin 20s as “aging vets”??? Jeez… Hilbert and Comrie are only like 3y older than guys like Bergie and Frans, but while the latter pair get the “they are still learning, give them time” schitck, the other pair gets this “aging vets” treatment. Its ridiculous.

  270. avatar Jethro09 says:

Chris TMC: I agree that they are not “aging” players, I just don’t think the Isles are leaning on either guy to build their team around. I don’t think Comrie will be on this team past March 4 and Hilbert may go over the summer.

  271. avatar randy boyd says:

    jethro09,

I was completely on board as to how they started the season. The mix was good and, if not for the ridiculous injury situation (IMHO) they would have been very competitive.

Once the wheels came off, however, the mix should have changed. I mean, they tried to waive Sim, and now have him in the lineup instead of Smith, McLean etc. That is what I disagree with. They are wasting valuable game experience for guys who may be the future by playing guys who clearly are not. The only explanation for this would be if they had a shot at the playoffs. That shot was gone by mid December.
