by admin on February 25th, 2009 at 11:31 am

Yesterday’s positive step for the Lighthouse was not even the best news Charles Wang had received this week. At the Academy Awards on Sunday, the winner of Best Documentary Short was Smile Pinki. The film, directed by Megan Mylan, follows the story of an 8-year old girl from India who was born with a cleft lip and palate. Her life is transformed thanks to Smile Train, the world’s largest charitable organization that provides cleft surgeries.

Wang is the Co-founder and Chairman of Smile Train. To watch the movie trailer and learn more about the charity, visit the Smile Train website. Yesterday at Hempstead Town Hall, Wang told reporters when asked about the success of Smile Pinki, “Nothing is better than that, because it helps our children.”

Comments. Up Next is the pre-game.

Charles is a class act. We are so lucky to have him.

  7. Mr Wang has a good heart and a smart brain, looks like he hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

  8. avatar Chris TMC says:

That is really nice. Those surgeries are minimally invasive, relatively easy to do in poorer areas, and the difference it can make in someones life really is unbelievable.

  9. avatar Willis says:

I watched the trailer, it was very touching. I had no idea Charles was co founder. Respect.

  10. avatar Pat says:

This isn’t to say that Wang hasn’t said and done some things in the past that tend to give one pause… but can we once and for all put the misplaced cynicism aside and realize that we are profoundly fortunate to have an owner with this level of committment to the things he believes in? It’s time to stop beating thee man over the head with the “real estate profit motive” argument and acknowledge that the team we are fanatical about wouldn’t even be on Long Island had it not been for the efforts and deeps pockets of the owner. Shame on anyone who continues to throw stones at this man’s motives.

only 11 posts for this one so far… funny. i guess all of the haters don’t know how to react.

  13. avatar DerFerret says:

If he can bring smiles to the rest of the world, why doesn’t he start doing it on Long Island for once?

  14. avatar d-man says:

i was waiting for one of you… derferret… enters from the dark side

  15. avatar SIR WILLIAM says:

The same “Smile Train” that paid Al (Slimy) D’Amato almost 400,000 dollars in “consulting” fees when CA was under indictment.

    Gee Charle, wonder why?………….SW

  16. avatar Cincy says:

SW… OK. I get your point. I too wish that we instead had one of the other NHL millionaire owners who never paid a dime to a politician or other governmental / municipal official for the sake of business interests. Sorry. I must’ve forgot to put on my ‘utopian’ glasses today.
