YOU PLAY GM: Proposal – Brendan Witt
Choose from two trade options, or no deal at all

by admin on February 24th, 2009 at 12:10 am

If Brendan Witt is traded between now and March 4, it could be done in one of two ways:

A. The simple version: straight up for a draft pick (likely second round) and a prospect. Or…

B. A more complicated version. The $3 million that the rugged defenseman is owed each of the next two seasons presents a problem for some teams lusting after him. However, Islanders GM Garth Snow and his counterparts can get creative.

In one scenario, the Islanders would have to take a contract back – a player making in the $1-2 million range – to give relief to a team in salary cap trouble. The motivation for the Islanders? The proposed second round pick would have to be upgraded to a first, the proposed B prospect would have to be upgraded to at least a B-plus. Maybe the veteran the Islanders are “forced” to take is a good try for the system, or maybe not.

Still a tough call to see which way this could go, but know that interest in the 34-year old defenseman has increased considerably over the last week and conversations will intensify over the next 9 days.

As much as the Islanders like Witt, another reason the club is listening to trade offers might be that additional dollars would be freed up for an unrestrictive free agent signing. Although the Islanders may not find another Witt – a unique, old-school defenseman with unparalleled guts – NHL free agency beginning at age 26 changes the landscape. The Islanders could throw crazy dollars at a much younger defenseman who could be a better fit in Scott Gordon’s lineup and for year 2 and beyond of Snow’s rebuild. Could there be room for both Witt and a free agent? We’re not so sure.

But there is this Original Six kid from Long Island, all of 27, who could be one of just many players available. If you’re rebuilding and want to get younger, these are the kind of difficult decisions you’re faced with.

You play GM. Pick option A, B or C (no deal). Each reader gets only one Comment in this thread. We’ll tally the results at the end of the day.

  1. avatar NickyL says:

I’d keep Witt. If Guerin goes, Id make Witter the captain. The man loves it here and wants to help out. Hes a good leader.

  2. avatar redbull says:

    B
best solution to the isles that are weak in all positions, except the cap.

  3. avatar Alex Kinkead says:

    Option B

  4. avatar sir william says:

If you can guarantee me that Snow is going to throw crazy bucks at Komisarek, thanks and goodbye Brendan.

    Other than that he stays………..SW

  5. avatar Bedell says:

option b sounds the best to me

  6. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Option B is the right choice.

I believe Witt, Guerin, Martinek, Geravis, and Hilbert get traded at the deadline.

I believe Snow will get creative and move Weight for conditional compensation (not dropping his value based on if he recovers on schedule and how much he contributes to the team he is traded to).

I believe Jeff Tambelleni ends up in Pit.

  7. avatar Don't Mind the Haters says:

CB – when given the option of a first round pick, of course you take it. Plus throwing in a B+ prospect. This makes it a a no brainer. Having to bring in a 1-2 million dollar flop is of no consequence. Your poll question is too easy.

And with regards to losing Brendan’s toughness. I’m somewhat of a Sutton and Callahan fan, so I think the both of them next year will make of for the grit we’ll lose in Brendan.

  8. avatar Robbo says:

C – Keep him. He’s got guts, and he’s hilarious.

  9. A. This is a total rebuild and 34 years is to old. Gilroy, Andrew Mcdonald or a young UFA defenseman.

  10. avatar AM says:

If you get B especially a first round pick and a B+/A- prospect, you do it. There’s are teams who are really strapped cash wise and would love so leeway. The trade goes with the rebuild and plan. Otherwise you keep him. He’s a great leader on and off the ice and ideal to be captain very shortly. Would hate to lose him.

  11. avatar Ron from Lindenhurst says:

i’d love to keep Witt but i’m going to have to pick option B. another 1st round pick plus prospect sounds too tempting. And with 3 #1 picks, you can only imagine the offers the Isles would be getting on draft day

  12. avatar Walygz says:

I’d have to go with B. If we can land a B+ prospect and a 1st rounder, the deal has to be done. If not, I’ll enjoy Witter for another two years.

  13. avatar Nick says:

I would definitely go with B. Which teams are looking for a guy like Witt right now? Pittsburgh? Philly? Calgary?

  14. avatar guerin13 says:

i’ll take what’s behind door number two chris. i will gladly take an unwanted player making 1-2 million if that means that we get another first rounder and a real solid prospect. you don’t even think about it, you just do it. three first rounders in a great draft will do wonders for this franchise. then hello mike komisarek in july.

  15. avatar Isles316 says:

Option C. I don’t think Option B blows away the Isles enough to move him.
As soon as you get rid of Witt, you will be searching for a Witt type player.

  16. avatar Chickendirt says:

    I don’t mind trading anyone over 30.

Witt the return has to be right.

  17. avatar jeff says:

When I buy my tickets, I feel it’s implied that the team try and put a team on the ice that is capable of winning the game now, not years from now. That’s even more so with this team, which has shown no ability whatsoever to make wise draft picks. Please name for me any competitive team that purges all of its better vets? I propose that choice “C’ be added, use the money that the team saves by trading Witt to refund money to season ticket holders.

  18. avatar jeff says:

Oops, just noticed that”c” is no deal, so make that option “d”.

  19. avatar sketchykg says:

    Option B.

Brendan Witt and the Islanders 3rd rounder to The Panthers for their 2009 first rounder, Keaton Ellerby and Brett McClean.

I assume the Panthers still have their first.

  20. avatar Will C says:

OPTION B: The Isles make a deal with the Boston Bruins at the deadline, who have about 976,783 left to spend, Brendan Costs more. THE DEAL: Chuck Kobasew (2.3 mil/ 2 years left/ 26 years old) and a 1st rounder for Witt. Isles take money off the B’s hands to fit Witter in and get a young forward in return!

  21. avatar Nick Classic says:

I’d have to go with A or B. If Campoli and what’s left of Comrie fetched a 1st rounder it’s not out of the question to think Witt could attract the same. He could be a valuable piece to a team in a playoff run, since a warrior needs a cause.

SW – I’m with you on the Komisarek thing. I’d love to see him come home, but how likely is it that Montreal lets it come to that?

  22. avatar Andreas the Badger says:

Panthers won’t deal their 1st rounder for Witter. It’s too high up. I say go with Philly. Maybe they’ll give us something like Van Riemsdyk and Lupul? Not sure if that would bring back a 1st rounder in addition though. Maybe 2nd and 3rd. I would do it anyways, as a B option.

  23. avatar KP says:

Option C – No deal for the Witter. This is a vet you keep around for the kids. Witt is the epitome of a blood and guts hockey player. No one else on the team comes close to being this good a mentor in that regard.

  24. avatar Islander505 says:

    AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN….NOT A NOT B.

There will not be a deal….

Just my prediction…..from two time zones away.

  25. avatar Shoogah says:

I agree with Sir William. I’m glad I’m not a GM. I’m going with B.

  26. avatar KP says:

Sorry for second post, but why would Philly be looking to add salary? They’re dangerously up against the cap.

  27. avatar mm30 says:

    B

    Prediction:
Flyers get: Witt, TOR 2nd round pick
Isles get:Lupul, 1st Round Pick, D prospect Kevin Marshall.

  28. avatar The Express says:

    B.

I’d probably do it for just a 1st rounder. The B+ prospect is just gravy.

  29. avatar JD says:

Option B, but I’m not confident we get a 1st and a good prospect. If we can’t then Witt will be captain next season and I’d be fine with that

  30. avatar Southard says:

if the isles really think we have a shot at getting komisareck then B, if not i’d hate to see witt go and be left with nothing

  31. avatar nyrangersuck says:

Option C. This year and every year until he retires. And lets stop acting like 3 million a year for Witt is a problem. He’d get 4.5 if he was a free agent easily.

  32. avatar Chickendirt says:

Based on standings alone I would look at Florida, Carolina and maybe Pittsburgh as poosible trade partners right now. At least in the East.

As far as where Witt goes I would bank on Florida. They are close to nailing down a post season berth for the first time in about 9 years. I think they will pay the most for any player that ensures them security.

Sending any over thirty vet we have there would make the most sense for both parties.

  33. avatar jonsson3 says:

At first I wanted him gone but I think with the team losing he’s not too motivated. Lately he seems to be playing a little harder. When the team is better next year I think he’ll go back to playing well. Also, ask DP if he wants him here. If he does then keep him.

  34. avatar Will Teese says:

I’m gona go with option B
As much as i love Witt, and i really do cuz how can you not, it shoudl be done for the right price. If a team comes to me and says i’ll trade you my 1st rounder, an A or B level prospect, and a salary dump player, i have to take it. Though his toughness is invaluble, so is another 1st rounder and a young gun to a rebuilding team.

  35. avatar Glenn says:

I go with option B. Agreed on trying for Komisarek too, obviously, but not getting my hopes up.

  36. avatar Justin Izzo says:

Tough to pick one – they’re all good options. Option B is the ideal one if Witt has to go. Option A may not be a bad choice either (having four second-round picks gives you the option to trade into the first round or simply have four second-rounders in a deep draft). And despite a slow start after returning from injury, having Witt around for the rebuild would be a good thing.

My pick? Option B. Immediate better prospect and better pick.

  37. Option B. I feel that the team that would negotiate this way would be a team that is trying to make the playoffs and understands that Witt helps. Having three first round picks would be massive. The addition of a B+ prospect is also very enticing, considering how that could pan out. Lastly, bringing in a 1-2 million dollar player could work out nicely if they seem like a player who could fit our system.

The best part is, if nothing happens, I still love Brendan Witt! He is a gifted player, and any team would be lucky to have him.

  38. avatar jay dugan says:

    my heart: keep ‘em
my brain: keep ‘em unless you get some serious offers that you HAVE to make.
Maybe he doesn’t fit the “system” but the guy is what every hockey player should be.There is no toughness on D if he leaves. If you can be assured you can sign Komisarek then there is your next Witt type of player and you can make a deal BUT it must be a sweet deal.
I am starting to think that if a player like Witt doesn’t fit the “system” then maybe I am not a good fit for the “system” as well.Maybe I need to find a team that fits what type of style I like to pay for.I like the hustle but when a player like Witt isn’t the type of player you need then maybe the “system” needs more tinkering.

  39. avatar deweyfromnfld says:

I will go with option “c”, exactly like what will be on the front of his jersey net year for us. Hey Chris, can we also see some consequences for people who can’t read and listen on here also? Thanks.

  40. avatar Paul says:

If they trade Witt, (another example of players not signing here, they all come here and love living here, if nothing else) and they can get a first round pick, then you have to do it…otherwise, no.

  41. avatar The Mick says:

Option B and hopefully the signing of Komisarek.

  42. avatar goowy says:

    C

Although he’s not worth 3 mil anymore, keep ‘em. We need a gutsy leader.

  43. avatar Lawrence Teller says:

What would Witt look like on a defense with Streit and 2 other top flight NHL D-men? Say Bouwmeester and Komisarek as well as any two off the current roster! Since he has been here he has been asked to do so much outside of what I see as outside his natural role – to bring that into a more specific relief – I believe he would serve to truly enhance the team if it could build around him providing depth on D that we have not seen in a while.

Second, should we end up with Hedman, I believe he would be a very valuable on ice mentor.

If these team is to become competitive in the next two years – I don’t see it happening without a player like Witt – filling a specific role. I don’t see anything other than a high second round pick as coming close to replacing his value in the overall vision of the franchise – and I don’t think he is worth that in trade – meaning his value here is higher than it is to anyone else IMO.

  44. avatar Hale says:

    post 2

with the move of campoli; gervais is not going anywhere. plus he is playing the best hockey of his life

  45. avatar Andre Legault says:

I sure do not want to see Brendan Witt leaving for a 2nd round pick. He is locked for 2 more years and he enjoys Long Island. Those are two huge “+” in my book. So unless we get a # 1 or a B+ prospect, no trade.

And I still want Komi anyway. There is room for both Komi and Witt.

Just ask our franchise player Rick Dipietro if he’d like to have both Witt and Komi playing in front of him.

  46. avatar Shawn33 says:

    Option C

  47. avatar Randi*NYI*39 says:

    Option C – for sure
I agree with NickyL and Isles316:
Brendan Witt plays with heart – how many others on the current roster can you say that about? takes a puck to the face, gets a few stitches, comes back out bloody and full strength. the guys got grit, is a stellar defenseman and has the respect of his team. drop guerin, make him captain – he leads by example and the team follows. it’s simple: he does his job and makes it easier for the others to do their jobs. KEEP WITT – or you’ll spend the next “rebuilding session” trying to find a guy who does WITT the same way. try and remember the magic on the ice when Witt was in front of DP in the net… and as far as saying Witt doesn’t “fit the system” – have you been watching this season? what system?? the system of loss?? hey coach, maybe it’s time to alter and/or change the system. hmmmm…

  48. I like option B the best because it offers the most potential, but I think option A might be what actually happens, so I’m going with A.

  49. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

    C

If NYI want to be competitive, a guy like Witt would be an asset a warrior. There aren’t many guys willing to lay it on the line like he does and he wants (wanted?) to be here. If the whole point of the rebuild is UFAs don’t want to sign here, assuming we can sign one to replace him seems farfetched.

  50. avatar Brian says:

    Option C

  51. avatar Cain says:

Option B if it also gives him a chance to win a cup, otherwise, C – we can have this conversation next year. ;)

  52. avatar DP says:

Option B–no brainer, Komisarak welcome home!

  53. avatar mrlbem says:

Option B. However, I think you underestimate Witt’s value to a playoff team. If Campoli can bring back a 1st round pick, Witt will also. Garth just has to be patient and let the bidding war begin.

  54. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

I wouldn’t want to trade Witter … but … if I was offered something tangable to consider … I’d go for an Option that improves the team considerably that I couldn’t refuse the deal.

Like 1st round pick (crap shoot draft) and a large sized defense prospect with B+ potential … I know that a deal like that is unlikey … but a GM would have to blow my socks off… reason being the Isles can’t count on Komi coming over in FA to fill the void.

  55. avatar bossy4president says:

    Option C
I agree we need to keep Mr. Witt here on the Island and pick up Komi this July. Gervais must stay (pretty much picking up Campoli’s pieces not Hillen), Sutton is a big ?, Martinek doesn’t have the marbles to play defense on a playoff contenting team. He’s got skill but he’s iffy.

  56. avatar Terry says:

    C. Ricky gets beat up enough back there, lets keep someone with some huevos to clear the front of the net.

  57. avatar Pritchett says:

Option B makes the most sense to me.

I believe Witt is our best defensive dman since Pilon and I love the guy. But to be realistic, the isles will be a terrible team next year as well and the year following will be witts last year under contract. I appreciate everything this guy can do for us but if we can get a first rounder and a prospect we have to make the deal. Sutton and a free agent signing can try and make up some of his snarl and toughness on the blue line.

  58. avatar Doug F. says:

    Option B

Trade Witt to Montreal for Chris Higgins (he makes $1.9 million).

  59. avatar eye on the island says:

    If not A then B.

We have 2 nhl defense coming back either at the end of this season or the beginning of next-and 1 in andy sutton who really did embrace the system and who could be a banger due to his size. This alone makes witt expendable, not to mention the haul he could bring back if there are 2-3 teams really interested in him.

The question I have for all those who support no deal, if the optimal goal of any franchise to is to win a stanley cup, and we all agree that probably won’t happen until after his contract expires, how DO we hold on to him?

  60. avatar Wedregast says:

    I go with B.

As much as I like Witt (he was going to be the next Islander jersey I buy), I don’t think its working out for him well under Gordon. A first rounder pick and a good prospect are worth getting rid of Witt in the long run. In the short run it will suck not having him here, his toughness and size will be missed by the team and especially the goalies.

  61. avatar bossy22 says:

No way to option A. Option B, I would pull the trigger. on a side note, Signing Komi would make the draft very interesting. If we have him signed, do the Islanders take Tavares. If we don’t land a d-man via free agency, I’ll go on record as saying…..the Islanders “will” select Hedman.

  62. avatar Joey303 says:

    Option B 55%
    Option C 44%
    Option A 1%

Love Witt -always have. But if a GM is willing to give a current roster NHL player + a #1, I would do it. Will C # 21 – I would do that trade with Boston. But that would give the Isles a possible #29, #30 #31. Hopefully someone on the fence gives up their #1 + , doesnt make the playoffs, and the pick is around # 15

  63. avatar drew says:

Out of those options, if B is attainable, you go for it (I would, at least). Listen, I absolutely love Brendan Witt – he is one of my favorites, but in this rebuilding process, you trade whoever you can for as much as you can. Maybe I’m wrong, but nobody is untouchable with the right deal on the table.

  64. avatar cusi says:

B- If you get a 1st round pick and a prospect do it.
    If not keep him.

  65. avatar Ron says:

    It should be C

  66. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Definitly B. We need a 1st round pick. Seems like he will be traded for B.

  67. avatar Bob Bassen says:

If I am a millionaire, living in the NYC/Long Island area and my job is primarily about exercising and keeping in shape, than I am pretty much loving life too. It all comes down to info that most if not all of us are not privy too; that is who (besides the upcoming draft) do Snow and Gordon want on this team going forward and the related composition of personalities. Snow is probably on the phone with GM’s everyday now and maybe even sharing whispers and off the record conversations with players agents. Seems that every team (although Caps are playing well as of late) in the play-off hunt are having tough times. Feels like the trading deadline is going to be the typical NHL free-for-all type of day with lots of players changing teams. Could end up being a juicy offer to good to pass up for Witt. Time will tell….
    Go Isles!

  68. avatar JPinVA says:

    How about D.
They trade Brendan back to Washington for Green… the Cap relief is Ovechkin and I get a lost weekend with Jennifer Aniston at the King Street Holiday Inn.
    DEAL!
Yes, if somebody is willing to throw a really good NHLer, a top prospect and some draft picks… But you’re talking like you’ve been hittin’ the pain meds…
Be realistic. The most we’d get is a low First a and second. Considering campoli brought back a low first.
If that’s what happens then they had better know that they can sign Komi in July. And not like HE KNEW he could sign SMYTH.
I want to be competetive (above .500) next year. and not YOUR .500… the REAL .500. They need to win more games than they lose. That’s where this team, with $20M under the cap on July 1st needs to be next March.
I know that’s not realistic either… but I don’t want another season of WINS DON’T MATTER… this is NY, and they play a PROFESSIONAL SPORT… WINS AND LOSSES ALWAYS MATTER.
Add Tavares to a crop of kids that are a year older and more confident… and they’ll still need some backbone. Trade Witter and you trade this team’s spine.

  69. avatar derek says:

Option B is a no-brainer, if they can do that. Having said that, I think Witt is a very good defenseman that brings alot to a team. I’d love to keep him but if we’re can get a B+ prospect and a 1st rounder (even a 2nd rounder) I do the deal, only because it would free up another Mill or so for July 1.
I think it’s safe to say that we all LOVE the idea of Komo coming home. CB, any way you can get us Matt Keator’s email and address. Maybe we can flood him with requests that Komo sign here. Also can we dedicate April 2nd as Mike Komisarek day at the Coliseum.

  70. avatar Tony F. says:

No deal, Isles316 said it best, Lupul is injury prone, hasn’t played a full season since 2006.

  71. avatar Mike says:

I’m kind of torn. I would love to keep Witter but if we were able to get a cheaper, younger player that can help now plus a prospect and a 1st rounder I would have to go for it. I know the team is trying to keep payroll down, but Witt isn’t exactly making huge money. I don’t see why they couldn’t keep him and still go after that guy from Montreal.

  72. avatar Ed J says:

    C ” No deal “….

Witt bleeds Islander orange. How many players in the last 10 years on the island has played with his heart & guts.

  73. avatar Dadi says:

    Plain & simple: Keep him.

  74. avatar Dan Sec 303 says:

My problem with these options is we don’t know who will be in goal next season. If DP is in goal and healthy, then option B is ok, but not great, since he’ll make up for the mistakes the less experienced defense makes. However, and it’s a BIG HOWEVER, we don’t know how DP is going to be. And if your in year 2 of a rebuild you want to start winning more games and building your kids confidence. If DP is out and we’re between MacDonald and Danis, you do Option C, and keep the tough D-Man to help block shots and keep the opposition off of the young goalies.

Overall I choose Option C, on any rebuild team or any team that won a Stanley Cup, you have a mix of veterans and youth. If we get rid of all the veterans we won’t grow as quickly. As many of you who have played sports and myself, when you play with someone who is considered a veteran, sometimes you can learn just as much from them as you can your coach.

  75. avatar Dan from Westchester says:

A guy like Witt is extremely valuable to any team. Plays physical, with heart and isn’t afraid of pain. Having just turned 34 – there’s no reason this guy can’t be a part of the rebuild.

Can’t have a roster of ALL kids out there. Even Gordon acknowledged after the Campoli deal how valuable it’s been for the kids to have some of these veterans to learn from.

Unless the offer is out of this world, trusting Snow will do the right thing. . and keep Witt and Islander.

    Choice C.

  76. avatar Eric says:

Now that he has power play experience, how about to the Rangers for their 1st? :)

I could see Witt being moved in a deal that would involve a swap of 1st rounders (theirs for San Jose’s, conditional on where both picks fall) and a prospect.

  77. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

I would love to know what you think will happen

  78. avatar streit02 says:

I have faith in Garth Snow that he’ll do the right thing here. Im sure Snow holds Witt in his highest praises. Snow will wait for someone to blow his mind with a deal and if that doesnt happen then Witt isnt going anywhere. I dont see how there wouldnt be room for Witt and another big FA. We just shed 4 mil in Comrie and if Guerin there goes another 4 mil. By the time we have to start shelling out big money to our young guys Witts contract will be over and if hes still here he will be making less money

  79. avatar Dan in NJ says:

I think if you can get “B” you make the deal in a heartbeat. You are saving $3 million/year that you can put towards a UFA D-man this summer, pick up another #1 pick and get a prospect or veteran that may/may not work for the system. Plus we still have the #1 or #2 pick in the draft, the pick we just got from Ottawa and the 3 2nd rounders. This is how you rebuild. But I would not do option A. It Option B or no deal!

  80. I say C. Keep him to mentor younger kids and don’t think plan B is very realistic. Who will give up 1 rounder and B+ prospect for a 32 y.o. stay home def?

  81. avatar Eric W says:

I’m ok with option B. If we do B and have some money to throw at a UFA defensemen wouldn’t the isles be just as likely to throw some cash at matt gilroy as they would komi?? Can u imagine the isles trade witt for prospect and 1st or 2nd and sign komi and gilroy??? Puts a smile on my face just thinking about it.

  82. avatar Bryan says:

So long as that vet can skate I’m in for option 2. Worst case scenerio we buy the guy out at the end of the season. Afterall we do still need to meet a cap floor.

He can join Jon Sim on the buyout list if we cant move him in the next week.

Kind of sad too because I think Sim caught a bit of a raw deal here.

  83. avatar Doug F. says:

    From the Toronto Sun:

    MONTREAL CANADIENS

Needs: There is an awful lot of pressure on GM Bob Gainey to be a big player at the deadline. The Habs went through a terrible stretch and haven’t played up to capabilities. They have questions about their scoring, defence and even goaltender Carey Price. Keep an eye here.

Who’s available: LW Christopher Higgins and RW Alexei Kovalev.

Like I said earlier Higgins for Witt…

  84. avatar Swan says:

Wasn’t going to vote, but the post from JPnVA (73) inspired me to. What he said.

  85. avatar JSpitz says:

Komi is a good player, but he is what he is…a big, nasty stay-at-home defender who is probably not worth the ‘crazy’ money that Snow will throw at him / many posts are suggesting. Dont forget what is going on across the East River right now w/ a former Islanders draft pick (#2 overall) who was grossly overpaid.

Witt is my favorite player on this team, but if you can get value for him i think it’s a great move.

  86. avatar Macch says:

I’m torn but I say trade him. Yes hes a warrior but we can lose with him we can lose without him. Get whatever we can

  87. avatar Ron from Forest Hills says:

I would love to get Komi, but I don’t see Montreal letting him walk away, unless they have to shed payroll to get Vinny L.

Keep Witt – tough fearless blueliners are a key element to winning teams, and they are hard to find.

  88. avatar "Semi-Dissillusioned Brian" in VA says:

JP that was hilliarious! I know the King St. Holliday Inn you speak just about a 1.5 miles east of me! Keep Witt! Do you guys really believe that Snow will bring an FA of any significance in during the off-season! C’mon you better than that! Get ready for more 1-yr deals for the likes of McCammonds/Vasiceks/Fedotankos of the world! Isles hockey “We rebuild forever with AHL or over the hill has beens”

  89. avatar Jethro09 says:

If I trade Witter, its only under the option “B” parameters. If there are no takers for a late first and a high-end prospect, then I keep Witt. The Isles don’t need to move Witter to get into the UFA game. The Isles have so much cap space they’ll have no trouble offering UFA’s the biggest deals, its just a question of whether or not the UFA’s want Islanders’ dollars.

  90. avatar Cruicky says:

During the rebuilding period, its not about cheap, its about youth and proper fit. At 34 years old Witt does not fit. Get what you can and continue to rebuild this team. This team is 3 years away and Witt will not be in the picture in 3 years.
If Guerin, Weight and Silly do not resign, this will make available over 11 million for purchasing new players that fit the Flash Go-Go style. Moving to player like the Matt Martin’s of the world will make this team far harder to play against.

  91. avatar Kevin Schultz says:

I feel like it would be foolish not to take B, but we’ve seen how attractive LI is to free agents. Might be better to hold onto Witt, still go after Komisarek and see what happens next year. Maybe Witt could be trade bait then. Cause I think there will be space (we’re certainly not re-signing Weight, Guerin AND Silly).

  92. avatar Dan says:

Remember somethign Isles have had problems signing people the past few years. You find someone that likes it hear and has not requested a trade. If he did I would totally accomdate. But a good leader who wants to play here I would say no deal…. Fans need some players on this team who are liked and he is one of them…

  93. I’ll take Option B here.

You’re looking for a decent top six winger as your prospect (David Moss in Calgary or Steve Bernier in Vancouver?) and a first rounder in the 12-21 range. The prospect does not have to be super young but someone reaching the end of their first contract (still a year or two away from their prime) would do. Look to the Western Conference for this deal to get done. Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Columbus, etc. Witt should not get dealt to an Eastern Conference team if at all.

  94. avatar Pete M says:

Option B if Snow gets blown away, otherwise, C.

  95. avatar Jack L says:

I think B would be good if we get another first round pick. Cap Space is one of our biggest assets. Getting younger has the benefit of a lower cap hit because RFAs are cheaper than veterans.

  96. avatar Helene says:

DO NOT trade Witt away. You still need some role model vets. Young is good, but experience and attitude are invaluable intangibles that only come with the over 30 crowd.

  97. avatar AZS says:

    I would choose option B

I get that he’s a “warrior” and that he wants to play for the Islanders …but so do I – and I shouldn’t probably be playing for us either ;-)

I’m not even saying that he doesn’t have his moments where his style of play isn’t effective, but too many times this year he has looked completely lost out there. I know +/- stats don’t tell the whole story, but there have been many times where a Witt penalty, a Witt missed assignment/positioning, or a Witt give away has led directly to a goal …

If somehow Snow were able to get any decent prospect(s) or a decent draft pick(s) for him while having to eat another contract I would be very happy …

  98. avatar Chris A says:

Option B like AZS said he’s a warrior, therefore a team looking to make a playoff run would greatly use him for his defensive skills and grit

  99. avatar Jack says:

Just how thin will Snow make this team? This draft pick collection is nothing more than a stall till the LH comes around. Didn’t love Campoli but 3 more years down the drain only to wait another 2-5 for a draft pick who may never play in the NHL. Do you see what’s happening here people? The Isles always take everything to the extreme!

  100. avatar rob says:

It does not matter… Just empty the bank for Komisarek…we need a true Islander in the worst way.

  101. avatar bcarey says:

    Andreas the Badger (23)

    So your proposal is:

    FLYERS GET:
    Brendan Witt

    ISLES GET:
    Joffrey Lupul
    James Van Riemsdyk
    2009 2nd Round Pick
    2009 3rd Round Pick

You must have been half asleep when you posted that. If Garth Snow pulled off that trade, he’d be the best GM in the history of competitive sports. A young two-way dman, the 2nd overall pick in 2007 and two draft picks? For Brendan Witt? That’s absurd.

  102. avatar nightfly says:

I think Option B is best, if Snow can find a willing partner… but I doubt that Witt will bring a one PLUS a B+ prospect PLUS a player. The Isles would have to kick in a pick of their own to do that.

Part of me wishes that Edmonton would be in the running since they have a ton of young prospects they can spare (Brule, Potulny, Plante, Schremp, Kytnar)… but they also have plenty of defensemen on the wrong side of thirty and don’t need another. Florida is similar – a younger defense but still stacked; they’re more in the market for another scorer, I think, and they have the prospect depth to swing a deal elsewhere. In fact, it’s makes more sense for Florida to go after Higgins with prospects as bait than for them to try to add Witt – though they may console themselves with Guerin or Weight if Higgins is unavailable.

Vancouver has a lot of balanced scoring (something like nine guys with at least ten goals) but I don’t know if they have the prospects, and if they want to sign at least one Sedin they can’t take on Witter’s salary.

How about Buffalo? With Miller hurt they may want someone to help out the blueline for Lalime, and they’ve got some interesting guys. We couldn’t pry a player like Drew Stafford but a one plus a solid prospect of theirs… plus Witt wouldn’t have to go all that far, which is a consideration for his family.

PS – demi-disillusioned (#92) – Vasicek actually played well here! I wouldn’t have minded seeing him come back, he was way better than Comrie…

  103. avatar Macch says:

JVR is a power forward not a Dman. And like CB said regarded as one of the top 10 and I would even say top 5 prospects in the NHL. Never ever happening

  104. Jethro09
    Right on dude, right on…
Keep this “statistically challenged butt” firmly planted on LI soil.

  105. avatar Mike says:

I like option A. Here’s one I’d love…Witt to Philly for a pick. Flip the pick to Colorado for our next captain: Ryan Smyth

  106. avatar Michael from T.O. says:

If option B is available, then do it. Witt is an irreplaceable player, but this team needs to get younger. Sutton is coming back and can somewhat fill that role. It also frees up money to go after Komisarek (who is very good in his own end and good puck mover) and possibly sign Matt Gilroy.
If Witt stays at the deadline, Snow can see what happens at the draft. Maybe they draft Hedman and get a feel Komi wants go come home. Streit, Sutton, Komi, Hedman, Gilroy, Gervais, Meyer, Hillen. Bigger, faster, and younger defence to go with in the future.

  107. avatar doc says:

How is Komisarek a true Islander???

    Over-rated… and will be overpaid.

The romanticism of this kid is remarkable… simply because he’s from Long Island.

    DOC

  108. avatar Carmine says:

I really don’t see B happening but if it did it’s really a no brainer, I say option C, I love what Witt brings to the team. And I’m with everyone else I hope snow can get Komi back on LI and while were at it bring Scuderi back too. Wow what a defense that would be.

  109. avatar Isles4cups says:

Option B – Boy, it would be tough to trade a guy like Witt after reading all the good things he has to say about Long Islands fans, lifestyle and the team in general. I can only see option B as making the most sense, otherwise, keep Witter in an Islanders uniform!

  110. avatar Hale says:

to post 23…you might not get Van Riemsdyk for boumeester no way we get him for witt

  111. avatar admin says:

A reminder: You play GM. Pick option A, B or C (no deal). Each reader gets only one Comment in this thread. We’ll tally the results at the end of the day…CB

  112. avatar Tom says:

I’d trade Witt for the 2nd rounder & a pick. The guys an absolute warrior. He deserves to play within an organization that can give a player like him a chance to win.

Watching Brendan Witt be coached by Flash, is like watching Michael Vick train his dogs. It’s painful and it’s an absolute sin to watch.

  113. avatar Dorfer says:

Option B – it’s a no-brainer. Would not do option A, because all else being equal, the Isles can get at least that for him a year from now.

  114. avatar Rich says:

CB, Option B is the best choice. I think you may be the next Isles GM.. Do you have nay interest?

  115. avatar Cary says:

I’ll take B, draft Tavares and then draft heavy on D.

CB – is it me or are our D prospects very shallow at this point?

  116. avatar DanNOLA says:

    I’d go with B

What about getting a young RFA in the deal from a team close to the cap who can’t afford to resign him? Look at a team like the Rangers. They have something like 9 or 10 RFA’s and UFA’s, including their leading scorer, and there is no way that they can sign all of them, and there are other teams in the same position. Could Snow use a guy like Witt to get a pick, prospect, and young RFA?

  117. avatar C.J. says:

Option B is the most likely – not many teams have the fiscal ability to take on Witt straight up. Isles have the ability to taken on a contract greater than Witt (whether that be in the form of one or two roster players). If that’s factored into the deal, it’s a major benefit for a team looking to make additional moves, but currently can’t based on their Salary Cap positioning.

With that, I expect that if Witt is dealt, the Isles nab a 1st rounder and a roster player in return. I think a 1st + prospect + player is too much for any team to pay.

Personally speaking, if I had to factor in everything I’ve read and know, Witt to the Flyers sounds the most plausable. Philly loves bangers of which Witt is definitely one. Witt would round out that defensive corp nicely. As CB previously pointed out, Holmgren and Snow have a relationship and a history. Lastly, Flyers have a few albatross-like contracts that are thorns in their side.

    Possible deals include:

Witt to Philly for Flyers ’09 1st and Randy Jones

Witt, Dean McAmmond, and Isles 4th rounder to Philly for Flyers ’09 1st, Randy Jones, and Joffrey Lupul. A deal of this nature would:

    1. give the Flyers more wiggle room financially
    2. rid them of Randy Jones who hasn’t played to the level of his contract
    3. rid them of Lupul who is an immature head case
    4. sure up their team defensively with two solid, veteran players
    5. give the Islanders a talented winger who they potentially can work with and hope matures
    6. give the Isles a decent 5-6 dman who is still young
    7. give the Isles a 1st round pick they so desparately crave

  118. avatar kman says:

long island surfers love witt. he must stay.

  119. avatar Scott, East Meadow Long Island says:

I go for option number 2…

How about Witt and #2 and #4 pick to Dallas for #1 pick, LW Loui Eriksson and D of either Matt Niskanen/Mark Fistric?

  120. avatar isles3113 says:

Option B, although I love Witt… If we do get the 1st rounder, that 1st round along with San Jose’s 1st round and a 2nd round pick to some team with a top 10, maybe top 5 pick… I wouldn’t mind that.

  121. avatar cgs878 says:

Option B – to get us Bouwmeester and Komisarek somehow, via a series of complicated trades and draft pick manipulations! What a dream.

  122. avatar Rich says:

    (B) Guys this is ridiculous fun. All Isle fans are thinking there aren’t any stay at home tough defenseman in the league. Yes Witt is a warrior on the worst team in the league. He can be a warrior on the an Isles team that misses the playoff’s next year. Then he will be 36 and certainly an injury risk as the age progresses. Did you guys watch the same season that I did. Witter started really only playing better the last month. Hmmm…was it to increase/showcase his trade value? Was putting Witt on the powerplay really Gordon being funny or getting Witt noticed around the league as a team first player. Anothert big hmmm. Did you notice that an elderly Doug Weight had a good year and sprained his knee right before we could dump him. Now we get no value for Weight except his fine tutelage of Okposo and Bailey. Do you really not want to get rid of Witt when he can fetch a 1st rounder or a 2nd rounder plus a prospect. He is one sprain/strain or broken bone away from us getting nothing. Please keep in mind we are the worst team by a mile in hockey.

  123. If B really included a 1st-round and/or upgraded prospect plus the existing NHL player? Gotta go with B. Isles have payroll room — they need to accumulate assets.

  124. avatar ShardZ says:

I think B would be Snow’s dream, but I cannot see it happening. a 1st rounder plus [potentially] 2 roster players? If I were Snow, I take it immediately. If I were the other GM, I look for cheaper options if at all possible.

If nobody offers choice B, I go with C.

  125. avatar sirhofh says:

    (D) – a bucket of pucks.

anything for this overrated puckwatcher who takes bad penalties is a steal (especially as a salary dump).

  126. avatar BillyIsle says:

B, If not, then keep him until at least next year. Sometimes when Im at a game I like to just watch Witt, hes very fun player if you just keep watching him. Hes always doing something to somebody on the ice.

  127. avatar stevedepot says:

The Flyers have some good assets and I doubt they’d want to part with a 1st rounder for Witt when they can actively pursue sending a bigger package for a defenseman that could have more of a 2-way impact.

  128. avatar Steve says:

I’d choose option B if we are going to throw crazy moolah at Komisarek and have a good chance at signing him,a well as inking Gilroy.
    Otherwise, option C. keep him.

  129. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    (B) I already posted (#69 ) but did not delineate my vote.

  130. avatar Strickland says:

(B). I love Witt, but we’ve got to start thinking for the future and he’s not going to be a part of that.

  131. avatar Tony says:

    A. Getting a 2nd round draft pick would be a steal, seeing as how I think Witt is absolutely horrible in almost every facet of the game. Having heart doesn’t go a long way with me–being a productive hockey player does.

  132. avatar Dan says:

If plan B can we get some realistic names being returned. No fantasy here people…

  133. avatar IslesPassion21 says:

    Choice: D
If Witter wants to stay I say keep him.
The toughness Witt brings is priceless. I also think we need to keep guys like Weight, Guerren and Witt. They need a veteran presence or we will be rebuilding forever which it seams that way already. Gotta keep character guys to teach the youngsters also.

  134. avatar David says:

Option C. Keep Witt, trade Guerin. Make Witter Captain!

  135. avatar Westchester Isle fan says:

    Witt to the Wild.
-He’s a Jacques Lemaire type of player.

-Once they trade Marian Gaborik and his $6,333,333 contract. They’ll have plenty of cap room.

-Also we send Doug Weight over with Witt. For some scoring punch.

-With those two players they might just make a stink in the playoffs.

We get back Colton Gillies and there #1 from this years draft.

  136. avatar StevieL says:

Love Witt, a class guy! His value maxes out this week! Option B is the way to go!You still have to field a team for the ’09-’10 season! We don’t have many NHL ready players left!A pick and a player!
I really think this is a scenario that could happen with the desperate Penguins!! We also have to make a play for Islip Terrace boy Mike Komisarek. Who knows, he may not want to come here, maybe ( God forbid!) he grew up a Ranger fan! Higgins also if he is available, has to be on Garths radar! It is going to be an interesting week!

  137. avatar Islanders1984 says:

option B, Isles would have 3 picks in the 1st round, would be great. I love witt but he isn’t going to be here when the rebuild is over, so it would be nice to get another 1st rounder now while they can

  138. avatar Willis says:

    Option B

  139. avatar Wedregast says:

Trade Witt to Florida for their #1 pick and a prospect, that lets Florida trade JayBo for another team’s #1 and #3, a roster player, and a good prospect. Then Florida can trade the #1 and a prospect to pick up Kaberle from TO. All three teams make out nicely.

  140. avatar fauxrumors says:

    1) So you think Komaserek deserves/will get “crazy dollars” from the Isles/any other team? How much is that? 6-7 million for 5+ years?
    2) Looking at their cap numbers the Habs have plenty of space to resign him if Mike chooses to stay. The way the soap opera in MTL has gone you’d have to wonder about that

  141. avatar Gary9-19-22 says:

I would love to see option B, BUT…

We need some solid veterans to bridge to the future and Witt fits that bill. He has been trown a few bones, PP time and incorporation of his feedback into the GO-GO system.

You dont trade people who want to play here and understand about us rebuilding.

  142. avatar BrassBonanza says:

    Option A:

Trade Witter (although he has been a fantastic Islander) and get his salary off the books. Get a decent draft pick or a prospect with some upside in return. And lets use Witt’s salary to go after a younger all-around D-man in free agency…. Let’s get Bouwmeester (I hope FLA stays in the hunt long enough for them not to trade him)

  143. avatar John says:

If something has to be done then option B is the best way to go… but I would be very disappointed if the team didn’t make a run at a big time UFA.

  144. avatar goislesgo105 says:

I vote for B. As much as I love Witt, the Isles are rebuilding. I was watching the Calgary Flames play and they remind me of what the Isles can look like in a few years. They are big, fast and skilled. V.Hedman can be our Phaneuf. OK can be our Iginla.DP is our Kiprosoff. The more young players we can get that are big, fast and skilled the better our future will look.If we need a defenseman like Witt will be( 36-37 years old and stay at home type) when we are ready to compete for the cup, we can get one then. I’m getting excited about the Isles future!! So sorry Brendan, but I vote “B”.

  145. avatar frequencine says:

I’d second the move to get Scuderi as well. I think it would be great especially for a marketing standpoint to get hometown heroes as long as we don’t ignore bigger fish out there like Bouwmeester or Seidenberg.

  146. avatar MikeF says:

B – as previously suggested, prucha for witt done deal

  147. avatar Will says:

I’d take option B in a heartbeat and its not even remotely close. I also think its necessary to throw big bucks (ie; overpay) for a free agent this offseason if we lose Witt, Guerin, or more because we’re close to the salary cap floor as is.

  148. avatar Robert says:

    Option B….
who wouldn’t want option B when the only difference between getting a first or second rounder, and a better prospect, is Charles Wang’s money…. Us fans look at a million or two here and there as monopoly money… :) But seriously, adding a third first round pick, how could we not love it!!

  149. avatar Smith77 says:

I don’t think option B is a possibility. No offense CB, I just don’t think we could get that much back for Witt.

I think we should keep him:

    1. Has a warrior mentality that you want to rub off on the young players.

    2. You can’t have a team full of young guys. Chances are Guerin will walk at the end of the season and Weight might too. As nice as Park and Hilbert are, they aren’t the leader type vets that these guys are.

    3. Witt is one of few players to admit that he’d love to stay on Long Island.

    4. Rick will be coming back from an injury plagued year with no one(other than Sutton) to keep his crease clear. He could also help protect the young players (even though it seems he doesn’t fight as much anymore). His presence alone helps.

    5. Our defense will be extremely weak. Our defensive depth isn’t that great.

    6. There is no guarantee that we’ll sign Komisarik. I personally think it’s very unlikley. Even if Witt does stay, we can still pursue Komisarik. We are at the minimum salary cap last I checked. Don’t we have like $15 million available?

    7. If you’re a Tavares fan… I can’t help but think the Isles will surely pick Hedman(if they have the choice) if they trade Witt(after also trading Campoli). The fact that our defensive depth is weak will only help towards picking Hedman.

Sure it’s a rebuild that we’re going through and the draft picks/prospects will help us a lot. Think about this though, Witt hasn’t had a good year. In one year from now, he’ll have one less year in his contract making more teams want him and he may have a better year next year which will increase his value. I’m not suggesting we trade him next year either. I’m just saying that this isn’t something that has to be done this year.

  150. avatar The Commodore says:

IF GARTH SNOW AND CB HAD THIER WAY – WE WOULD TRADE ALL OF OUR PLAYERS FOR DRAFT PICKS. YOU GUYS NEED TO WAKE UP. YOUR DESTROYING US. CB, ESPECIALLY YOU. FOR YOU NOT TO MAKE SOME NOISE ABOUT HOW DUMB THE CAMPOLI TRADE WAS IS IRRESPONSIBLE, AND NOT LIKE YOU. YOU NOW BETTER. WAKE UP.

  151. avatar Phil C says:

it’s never quite that simple but my order of preference?

b if possible, if not then a.

loved witter last couple of years but he’s a bad fit now and won;t get the minutes he needs to impact a game. that and the fact crosby and malkin and parise make him look like me on crutches 10 plus games a year.

  152. avatar akeem says:

Option B – I also think Snowy might be able to get a first rounder if he agrees to take it in the 2010 draft, rather than this year.

  153. avatar Matt says:

Option B if we can. How can we say no to that? Doc, Komiserak is a heavy hitting painful player to play against. Love to have him on our team. I think a lot of people “romanticize” about him due to him being from LI. I know you are aware of this but don’t understand why you wouldn’t think it would be a great day if we signed him!

  154. avatar thepolishprince says:

I like what Witt brings to the team. If you can pull off option B then do it. If not, no problem keeping brendan here.

  155. avatar frank nyc says:

    B no doubt about it

  156. avatar Chad says:

I LOVE Witt. He is by far my favorite current Islander for what he does both on and off (Witters Hitters) the ice. However, if Snow can get a 1st rounder, and B+ or better prospect, and save 1-2 mill in cap space the next two seasons and all he has to do is trade Witt and take on an unwanted player (OPTION B) he has to do it. The only downside to such a scenario (other then losing Witt) is adding another vet to the roster until at least the March 2010 trade deadline who would take a roster spot from a kid in BP like Colliton, Walter or Smith (assuming its a forward) like Jon Sim this season (and probably next season as well).

  157. avatar beatlebailey says:

Option B – On a last place team there are no untouchables

  158. avatar Dally Mac says:

I say if a deal like that exists and I already contimplated a trade with Philly in another post, I say do it. I think Philly would be the easiest to deal with in the plan B scenario due to thier circumstances. I vote for B….Get it done Snowman…happy with your work so far.

  159. avatar doc says:

Matt: Wouldn’t mind having Komi on the Islanders… but not at 6 or 7 mil per year for 5 or 6 years.

EX. A: The New York Rangers – No more cap space.

    DOC

  160. avatar nyislanders93 says:

Option B no doubt. Taking on salary is no problem for this team because they are about 11 million below the cap and have the money to spend. The cap will likely come off at the end of the season too when the players contract expires.

  161. avatar Johnny Islander says:

    Option B…

If I’m really getting another 1st rounder and a B+ prospect.

With 2 late 1st rounders and multiple 2nd rounders you start feeling around for what it would take to land Tavares AND Hedman.

  162. avatar Cruicky says:

ONe thing to keep in mind during the rebuilding process. It is only about 10% to 14% of the drafted players that will play in excess of 100 games in the NHL. Very few of these draftees will have NHL careers.

  163. avatar Gary says:

Tony (#135) – Obviously you’re only looking at scoring and assists. Witter has never been that kind of guy. If you were watching the last Devils game, I think in the 3rd when it was 2-0, Michael Rupp was skating into the zone looking to get the Devils on the board. Then Witt stepped up and hit Rupp and stood him up and the Isles were able to retrieve the puck. That kind of hit changes the momentum of the game. That’s why Witter was brought here and that’s why Witter should stay here.

    I say C

  164. avatar the bomber says:

the team that needs Witt the most, oddly enough, is the New York Rangers.

Rangers get Witt, and Avery who Isles claim on waivers.

Isles get Prucha, Rangers 1st round pick, and Roszival who Rangers need to dump.

  165. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Prucha and Rozival suck. Not the kind of guys the Isles need. Isles need rising stars with size and character that is not Prucha and Rozival.

  166. avatar Matt says:

I have a hard time believing Komi is going to get 6 or 7 mil at 5. I know we may have to over pay but I’m with you if thats the going rate! I don’t expect a home town discount but that is 2 million more than I think anyone should pay!

  167. avatar Cruicky says:

just 4 years out of the AHL, you are not giving Komisarek more than 3.5 mil. No offence. None.

  168. avatar the bomber says:

isles need scorers. prucha can score. but isles need first round picks more than anything. taking that waste roszival off the rangers hands helps them enough that they may give us what we so badly need, a high pick.

  169. avatar BC says:

    Choice B.

I mentioned yesterday trying to flip Witt over to Buffalo for Nathan Gerbe. If you had to throw in a older player to take salary off, I’d say Teppo Numminen would be the guy I’d offer to take.

  170. avatar TimQ says:

Option B – Hate to move a heart/soul type of player but he’ll never fit the system and we need help now and in the future

  171. avatar Dan Kepert says:

This is a hard one for me. Witt is one of my favorite islanders. He is a true warrior on the back end.

However, if we truely want to rebuild, the assest’s he would bring in would be much more valueable to the team. The years he has left on his contract will, lets be real, be losing ones.. why not add the picks and prospects that will come up around the same time as all our other emerging talent from the pervious draft and this years draft.

    Option B

I say Option C, but let me explain. We have a lot of draft picks, which is good, but I think we have enough. I would like to see an asset like Witt return a player who has proven to be NHL capable (ie Higgins,Randy Jones or whoever), but I can’t see a team in the thick of a close playoff race giving up a decent player. I don’t think you lose much, if anything, by waiting till after the season to do a deal. I love Witt too, but tick, tick, tick.

Witt and San Jose’s 1st for Pronger. If the Isles cant sign him past next season I’m sure he’d get a 1st back next year at this time.

Option B – we have the cap room and will need to fill it with Comrie gone and other vets on the move most likely as well. How about sending him to NJ for Clemmensen and a draft pick?

  175. avatar Terry says:

This is no time for sentimental feelings. I love Witt but I love the Isles future more…B for sure. If Snow can somehow snag a 1st..this draft would be huge.

I absolutely would go with option B. Brendan Witt is a great Islander, and would be my pick as the next captain, if and when Bill Guerin is traded. That being said, Witt is 34 years old and with the Isles current rebuilding process, they would not really be required to hold onto Witt. If the team can free up money to bring in a Mike Mike Komisarek, or another younger free agent, I say it’s a no brainer. Whatever scenerio occurs, Brendan Witt will also be remembered as a player who wore his heart on his sleeve, and was proud to wear the Islanders uniform. Thanks Brendan!

Love B-Witt and would hate to see him go but really he’s a piece to a different puzzle. I prefer option B. Either way, Witt or Wittout him landing Komisarek and Gilroy should be the goal. Adding Komisarek, Gilroy and Hedman over the summer would go a long way toward fixing anyone’s d.

  178. avatar Priest says:

I’m really torn between B and C. If I had to pick one I’d probably lean towards C but depending on how high that pick was, I’d jump at another first rounder.

The reason I’d say keep him is because I feel that every team needs a defenceman like Witt to go anywhere in the playoffs. Someone who will lay everything on the line to stop a scoring chance. Right now I don’t feel like we have that in anyone else, and there aren’t a lot around the league to pick up via FA. So unless you can draft one that’ll be a top pair give it all guy within a few years, I’d keep Witt.

  179. avatar Andrew says:

If we’re getting a mid-1st round pick and a solid prospect, I find it very hard to go against option B.

Although after your piece yesterday I was very tempted to pick C.

The emotional part of me says A. Take the pick and a b+ prospect straight up. Free up some extra cap money to throw at top free agent d-man (komisarek)and gilroy or chris neal. But that’s very risky in light of what smyth did. More money offered doesn’t mean you’ll land the big fish. My head says B. The old saying, a player you wanted (under contract) is worth more than a fantasy bidding war.(a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush)Since we are rebuilding, you have to get value in return. Soooooo…..I’d probably go with B assuming you find a good deal. Once burned twice foolish.

Love Witt but if u can get a high(meaning first rounder)draft pick for him or a young d man(Cam Barker) and 2nd or 3rd then its a must do.

  182. avatar Fred says:

I got to go with Option B, even if its only a second round pick and a prospect.

There is nothing wrong with building up second round picks. Look at the amount of teams that dealt second round picks to move up in the draft last year. With the soon to happen guerin deal for hopefully at least a second round pick deal happens at the end of tonight. The Islanders will have 4 second round picks plus two first round picks. Trade Witt for another second round pick and now that is 5 seconds and 2 firsts. Lets say the islander lose out on the lottery and pick number 2 or 3. How about offering 2 seconds and a first for the number 1 overall. does that make sense. or how about moving up in the first with the other first. say two seconds with the late first for another top ten first.

Moving Witt, Makes Sense. No other way around that.
