YOU’RE MAKING STEVE SIMMONS KING
Emails and reactions exactly what he wanted
Toronto columnist Steve Simmons writes that John Tavares should not play for the Islanders. Islanders fans, on this blog and elsewhere, get all fired up because of one dork sportswriter in Toronto. Islanders fans bombard Simmons’ email Inbox.
(Steve has been killing the Leafs for two decades, so writing him about how bad “his” Leafs are gets you nowhere).
What all those emails to Steve and letters to his editor will accomplish other than getting the writer a raise is hard to understand. What makes Steve Simmons’ opinion on this subject any different than a blogger’s or a fan’s or a guy down the street is a mystery. Congratulations, Steve.
Coming tomorrow on Point Blank: an entry ripping on the Rangers for winning one Stanley Cup in the last 68 years. If I really did that, I’d break a record for site Visits. It’s the same thing.

Let him be King for a day

Everyone gets lucky everyone now and then, need readers – get a rise out of “the oldest fanbase”. He should have said the largest fanbase instead – at least he knows now that there is a large contingent in Islanders country.
-
Who the hell is Steve Simmons?
-
Where can we find this “column”?
-
that guy is a douche
-
Steve Simmons is Eklund without the blog.

Even though this is the response and publicity he wanted I also will be emailing this idiot my thoughts on him. I guess he wasnt working for a Toronto Newspaper in 2002 when his Leafs went 0-3 and didnt stand a chance in this old barn with our old fan base. If he was at the Coliseum covering the games for his newspaper he would know we have anything but an old fan base and that this is still a special place to play. By the way have fun convincing Mike Bossy Brian Trottier Denis Potvin Billy Smith and Pat LaFontaine that anyone with dreams and aspirations of greatness should steer clear of long Island…

he is such a dbag

CB, I have to disagree. He didn’t just know the Islanders, he said a player should pull an Eric Lindros. It’s far different from stating the Rangers have been poor because of only 1 cup in 68 years is based on fact. Saying “why would anyone want to play for the Islanders,” and bashing their fanbase is far different.
-
We don’t 100% know if he was trying to get a rise out of Islander fans. The way he wrote his article it seemed to me that he didn’t think enough of us exsisted to even know that the Toronto Sun writes about hockey.
-
Also, CB and I’ll stop writing after this one but you have too much class to blatently rip someone or something just to get site hits. Even with the Steve Schrippa story, you came back and set the record straight for everyone.
Isles fans have been beaten up a lot by the Canadian media especially over the last few years and it seems like Im not the only one to be fed up and have a short fuse on it.

This kind of stuff really hurts, but I doubt it makes a difference in the end. I think JT will be happy to be in the NHL (wherever it is) and earning a nice paycheck.
I hope!!!!

This is what I said in my email to Steve Simmons:
“I was heartened to learn that the Toronto Sun has a diversity policy which extends employment opportunities to the mentally challenged such as yourself. The paper is to be commended.”
-
I’m not going to even do him the courtesy of reading his article. I could care less about what shock writers from other cities write about. Screw ‘em. KO has, what, 5 goals in the last 4 games? That is a much more exciting story for me on this lazy Sunday off. I’m happy to kick my feet up, drink my beer, and not give a damn about Steve Simmons.
-
It’s also taking attention away from the Larry Brooks column. As an Islanders fan, I’d want the extra $12 million per year from the league. But that’s just me and Larry, apparently.
-
The sad part is that Simmons isnt alone – a lot of the idiots in the hockey world look down on the Islanders, their fans and their future. Lets not forget that just 5 years ago the Penguins were all but out of Pittsburgh – they were bankrupt and had an even older building than us – should Crosby have controlled his destiny and stayed away from there – or should he have played there and along with Mario resurrect a franchise? Now they Sell out every game, were in the Finals and have a new building coming. But its ok Mr Simmons keep promoting everything thats wrong with sports. If Tavares does what you suggest i cant wait to see you applaud him in an article while the rest of the educated sports Media kills him. I guess there is always that guy…

CB .. and fellow fans … I’m at work here sitting next to a guy from Toronto (Russ) a big Leafs fan … and a guy from Chicago (Matt) a big Hawks fan … no surprise there.
We’ve debated the last 2 hours (while working of course) … pizza, football and of course hockey.
When I showed Russ and Matt Steve Simmons’ article … Russ said … why do you bother reading that garbage? Russ said he happened to be at the Coliseum Boxing Day (Dec 26th) to see KO take a DP pass and chug down the ice for a goal … he also watched last night’s game against the Panthers and said KO is on his way to big things … he said KO reminded him of a bigger version of his favorite Leaf Wendel Clark … Russ also said that NVMC was rocking that game .. not quite a full house but it was loud … and he added that DP looked great & it’s a shame he’s having trouble with his re-hab.
Russ feels as someone who works with media folks in Canada that most of the negativity about the Isles is manufactured by writers who a) Are sick of dumping on the Leafs b) In the 80s there was a lot of Isles hate while they were winning cups … c) There are still a lot of Isles fans in Canada due to the dynasty and some resent that.
Matt reminded me of where his Hawks were for the last 5 years and the losing ways have finally paid off.

You have to understand that Torontonians don’t care about anything except themselves. Haven’t read the article, but I’m sure Simmons pictures Tavares in a leaf uni., even if he doesn’t actually write it.
-
comment 20 is so correct. writers up in toronto only care about the teams they write for and dont look outside their tunnel. think about when all those articles came out in vancouver how the isles have no shot. theyre all like that up there. they throw away the possibility of anything negative ever happening
-
I actually just read the first part of the article and man did that get me fired up lol. He wants tavares to play for the leafs who havent won a cup in what? 42 years? yet its not in his best interest to play for a team that been around half the time with 4 cups in 4 seasons.
-
Simmons has always been annoying. No he’s even more so.
-
ROB, I completely agree with you. Back in 2005 when the Penguins drafted Crosby, Pittsburgh wasn’t exactly the team everyone wanted to play for.
I wouldn’t worry about this article though, just a Toronto Maple Leafs fan upset that the leafs haven’t won a stanley cup in over 30 years.
-
Rob’s right on. The problem is that there is a real negative image about the Islanders that has been placed on them and nurtured by many people around hockey. All of the “experts” bash the Isles for the mistakes of previous ownerships and Milbury and don’t view this ownership and administration separately from the previous failures. The reason for that is because it makes for good media.
The Isles have a bad stigma attached to them. Some of its is deserved for some bad decisions (like the firing of Neil Smith) but a lot of it is not deserved. If this management sticks to its plan, in 3-5 years, this team will be great, hopefully as they are getting a renovated arena via the Lighthouse Project.

i was born, raised, live in toronto – i’m an islander fan. simmons is not a respected sportswriter. the toronto sun is a tabloid; it makes the ny post read like the ny times and simmons can only write for shock value. he’s jerry springer/maury povich for sports and articles like this ensure he remains there until he retires.

Steve Simmons is a dork!

CB,
As I just responded in IM to Gradin, but also this in response to you above:“I am tired of being crapped upon by NHL media. I didn’t mention the Leafs once. Show me where I pointed out the Leafs?
I’m sticking up for Islander fans. Not attacking Leaf Fans. I have no idea if he is a Leaf fan or not.
If you go back to that article of his, you will see he takes his fat ass, and took a big crapola on Isles fans. I attacked back. If you don’t agree with that approach, so be it. But I treat people how they treat me.
This has absolutely ZILCH with him being a fan of any team.
And if his editor is proud of getting more hits for being a low life jackass who has 0 credibility than as CB said, “Congratulations Steve”. Something you should be proud of.”

for all we know this guy could be a Gallof in disguise
