DEADLINE DAY LIVE COMMENTARY
5:00 pm - Our final grade for the Islanders’ deals

5:00 pm - Twelve days ago, Garth Snow traded Chris Campoli and Mike Comrie to Ottawa for a late first round pick and Dean McAmmond. That night, we gave the trade a B.

When you consider 2009 first round picks were thrown around like manhole covers today, and that Campoli played the least amount of minutes of all the dmen on Ottawa last night, you could make the case two weeks later that the Ottawa trade is a B+ for the Islanders.

I thought Bill Guerin for Petr Prucha and a 3rd that could become a 2nd was as good a deal as the Islanders could ever make for their 38-year old, future UFA captain with a no-move clause. Over the weekend, I thought they might be able to squeeze a late second-round pick for Billy. Today, they traded him to Pittsburgh for a 5th that will likely become a 4th, maybe a 3rd (if the Pens win a round).

Twelve days ago, we gave the Islanders a B. Today, they didn’t make any good trades. They also didn’t make any bad or unnecessary trades.

For the period around the trade deadline, we’re giving the Islanders a B.

*

4:15 pm - Garth Snow just completed his meeting with reporters from Newsday, the Daily News, Post and Point Blank. Summarizing…

  • He took Bill Guerin out of the game Saturday because he had a serious offer from another team just prior to the game. Snow called Guerin’s agent and they mutually agreed keeping Guerin out would be in both parties’ best interest. “The risk of injury was something we all wanted to avoid.”

  • Snow said he wasn’t disappointed in the return for Guerin and that he had no preconceived notion of what it would be. “I went in with the mindset I was going to get the best possible deal for the organization.” On Guerin: “He was a great leader for us.”

  • The GM refused to discuss deals that did not happen, or came close to happening. We tried to see if he had any frustration with a possible trade partner pulling the rug out on a Guerin deal. We asked if he was angered by any of his colleagues. Snow said no.

  • On whether he was disappointed he didn’t do more today, Snow said this was his first experience as a “seller” and added, “As a seller, you can’t make a trade for the sake of making a trade.”

  • To that end, Snow hinted that he could possibly cut new deals with some of his prospective free agents. (Our take: Doug Weight would seem to be a logical guess. Maybe Andy Hilbert, too).

  • The GM said he wasn’t looking to trade Brendan Witt. “Brendan is what the Islanders are looking to be - tough, plays with heart, selfless.”

*

3:25 pm - It’s official. The store is closed. There will be no past-the-deadline Islanders trade announcements. I hope to one day be doing this when there’s a lot more action.

More than 1,000 Comments? Child’s play!

*

2:59 pm - Jon Sim sent to Bridgeport. Nate Thompson activated.

*

2:57 pm - Bill Guerin on the last few days: “It was a pretty painful process. We thought we had a deal done with another team a couple of days ago.”

Asked if he’ll be a leader in Pitt: “Best you can do is be yourself.”

*

2:52 pm - Almost done. No signs of a last-second deal. Seems plans are starting to be made for Garth Snow media availability. Just like this trade deadline, I would not expect much.

*

2:40 pm - Still don’t like my offer of Guerin for Prucha and a third that could become a second?

*

2:10 pm - Hope I lowered your expectations enough. Guerin to Pitt for a 5th round pick. Becomes a 4 if the Pens make the playoffs, a 3 if they win a round and Billy plays half the games.

Site crashing routinely. It survived Sunday, but I guess this blockbuster put it over the top.

*

1:58 - Bill Guerin to the Penguins. Done. Finally. Details on the way.

*

1:34 pm - 41-year old Recchi and a 2nd round pick from TB to Boston for Lashoff - exactly the kind of trade many of the readers of this blog are dying for the Islanders to make.

*

1:20 pm - Just about everyone reporting Bill Guerin trade is dead. We are not.

What trade are they talking about? Does that mean the Islanders aren’t even trying to trade him for the next 100 minutes?

*

1:05 pm - Steve Montador going to Boston (for Nokie) probably eliminates a top trade partner for the Islanders for Radek Martinek, who would have been a perfect fit for the Bruins. Now it doesn’t look like the Islanders will get one of Scott Gordon’s boys from Providence.

Bill Guerin getting traded, any hour now. And if he isn’t, I hope my laptop goes on the Fritz.

*

12:38 pm - Now that Miro Satan has cleared waivers, you have to wonder about the value of Bill Guerin. Make no mistake: Guerin is more respected around the game. But tough to picture his value soaring right now.

Suggestion for Islanders fans: pretend your team just traded Chris Campoli - just 16 minutes for Ottawa last night - for a first round pick. The deadline just got more exciting!

*

12:05 pm - Three hours to go before a trade must be filed with the league. Now the clock really starts.

The Islanders will have one trade, maybe two. No blockbusters. Probably nothing even major.

*

10:45 am, NVMC - In all my years announcing deals for the Islanders, I don’t recall ever announcing one on deadline day before noon.

While Ottawa and Columbus hooked up for one at 10:00 am today, you can believe it was agreed to late last night.

Separate from all that, here’s how a deal is finalized and announced.

1. Teams agree to deal.

2. Teams contact the NHL to register the trade and arrange for a league-moderated conference call.

3. In conference call, the NHL makes sure that all issues of the deal are resolved  - bonuses, agreement on conditional draft picks, etc.

4. Once deal is blessed by the league, the players in the deal are told.

5. Teams agree on a time when deal will be “officially” announced. For example, the Islanders and Senators agreed on a 4:30 pm announce time for the Chris Campoli deal.

For the last few years, I recommended to Islanders general managers that around the deadline they tell their players about a pending deal before it goes to the league conference call. Because once it goes to the conference call, TSN and Sportsnet will announce it.

Sure enough, Pascal Leclaire learned this morning he was traded not by the franchise he played hard for, but by TSN.

*

8:30 am - Today it comes full circle for us in Room 6, across the hall from the Islanders locker room at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Two years ago on deadline day in Room 6, I saw the look on Greg Logan’s face when informed the Islanders had acquired Ryan Smyth. A year ago, my staff hosted Islanders and Penguins reporters to a day of snacks, TSN and wireless in Room 6. Pittsburgh picked up Marian Hossa.

Now I’m back in Room 6 - this time on the other side. All day long, we’ll join the Commentary with the readers of Point Blank.

To be candid, now that it’s deadline day, count on the two Canadian sports networks to break 90% of the deals. Most if not all the time, trade news will be posted by a reader in Comments before I get it. That’s how it works on Shopping Day, when the news of completed trades is often delivered by TSN and Sportsnet before the players even find out.

Guerin for a 3rd, maybe a 2nd.

Please don’t hog the Commentary, is all I ask. I want every reader to feel they can get involved. Dominate the space, and you know what. Thanks…CB

I am really looking forward to seeing JT in an Islanders uniform…….

  5. 5 BillyIsle

I would not be upset with either of the projected top 2 picks this year. I’m partial to Hedman though. But lets save draft picks (unless acquired in a trade) for another day. This is the NHL trade deadline=basically the only true excitement(aside from watching the kids develop) we have until the draft lottery! GARTH SNOW..GARTH SNOW..GARTH SNOW

  6. 6 hextall72

still moving around snow(not garth!!) as we speak, but checking for updates here. too bad i’ll be sleeping all day when all the action is going on.. thanks for the hard work chris.. gonna take me a day or so to read through everything..

it’s the most magical day of the regular season- the trade deadline day!!!!!

absolutely shocked that no trades were announced during the night.

we better get more than a 3rd for guerin after this big holdup or else its the longest anti-climatic trade ever!

just pumped to see garth swindle another gm

  13. 13 7th Woman

Good luck. Rm 6 will be crowded.

  14. 14 Schultz39

Guerin for a 2nd or 3rd would be disappointing to be honest…but not surprising.

  15. 15 Mike from Oceanside

Let the BEST trading deadline transaction day in all of sports begin! I anticipate many deals done today as there are many more buyers today than sellers as compared to years past.

Half of Canada has called in sick to work today.

  16. 16 19 Isle in NJ 22

Hey CB … Great job keeping us up to date during this … well … very odd trade deadline season… I haven’t posted since Sunday b/c quite frankly I didn’t want to regurgiate the same ole same ole by posting speculation unless something definitively happened … and other than Joensuu’s first goal in his first game … there was nothing really note worthy to comment on while waiting to see what happened with Billy G.

I’ll check in from time to time today … perhaps I’ll have some moves to comment on later when I get home from work … till then I look forward to keeping tabs on what you have to say.

  17. 17 Coach B

Should be an interesting day Chris. This is great you have the live blog today.

  18. 18 the bomber

if we get a 2nd round pick for guerin ill be ok with it, but if we trade our captain for a 3rd rounder, then it shows our GM thinks he’s as washed up as I do. But I think we should keep him, we have lost a lot with him as captain, no reason to start winning now with a month to go before the payoff

  19. 19 JimintheUK

I really wish some trades would start to kick off here. Its killing me here living in the UK and being 5 hours ahead. I have been checking my Ipod and comp. every 10 mins to see if anything has started. I have total trust in Snow to make the right decisions just have to find some desperate GMs to get over on. Good luck Snow.

  20. 20 IslesFan13inFla

CB EXCELENT work over the last few days with all the trade talk. Don’t think it’s gonna be a huge day as far as trades are concerned. How about a trade day “Time Pool”? When will the first chip fall?

Me, I say 1:15PM. Most of these things don’t happen till the GM’s on the left coast have had a pot of coffee.

  21. 21 Matt Brosseau

I wonder how the uncertain economic future of the NHL is affecting the trade environment. Last week, the NBA had to take out an emergency line of credit for ten or so teams that couldn’t meet expenses; and some NHL teams are not in good financial straits either, our Islanders among them.

Perhaps some playoff/bubble teams are holding pat in order not to take on any unnecessary salary or trade for guys who they know they aren’t going to be able to afford come the first of July.

My prediction is that Guerin gets moved for a second or third-rounder…Snow has no leverage anymore, he has to get rid of him for ANY price or Guerin walks for free after the season. Other than that, maybe someone bites at Martinek or Hilbert for a prospect or a pick each.

Unfortunately I’m expecting a quiet deadline day…the last few have been fun though.

  22. 22 Joey303

Lets go baby!!! im tellin ya 2:59:59 - Hilbert for a 6th rounder - thats all folks

  23. 23 Cruicky

I have TSN on live. I hope this gets Sim and Joey MacD moved out of the Island.

  24. 24 Quez

Somehow I feel as if Garth is going to somehow scam another GM or two, and in a very complicated way, end up with a big name (Jordan Staal anyone?). Hey, I can dream, right?

  25. 25 derek

AH, Trade Deadline Day is here. My hopes are that we get a solid prospect or two coupled with some more 2nd rounders which we can move on draft day for another #1.

    This should be fun.

Hey CB, it’s 8:20am any word of something going on yet?

  26. 26 the bomber

alright botta, lets drop the puck…

i say after today we have no guerin, no weight and no sim. and in return we have a 2nd rounder a 3rd rounder and a 6th rounder….

that is it. i hope bouwmeister sticks in FLA, a would draft tavares and back the truck up for him on July 1…

  27. 27 Bob Bassen

If we get a player in return in anything that *may* occur today, please let it be someone that is nasty AND can play…sucks that the only *option* the Isles have for a game like tomorrow is to call-up Fritz. Knowing Gordon, he prolly won’t bring him up anyway. Saw the Flyers/Bruins game last night…wow are the Islanders S M a l l……

  28. 28 Commodore

We should keep Martinek. Trading him makes zero sense. Thanks.

  29. 29 Jeff in NH

CB, thanks for all you hard work so far and in advance for whats to come today. Your blog is first class.

  30. 30 Fred

Does it make sense for the Islanders to go after a player like Kovalchuk or Bouwmeester in a sign and trade scenario. Both are still relatively young and look like they would fit into what they are doing on the Island. Additionally, I think the Islanders need that big name that fans can relate to. Both fill that bill.

  31. 31 islestherapy

commodore … martinek does not figure into this team’s future … trading him for a pick makes all the sense in the world. trade him while he’s healthy.

  32. 32 kevin fitz

    Fred,
The best scenario for the Isles to sign a big name player like Jay-bo or Kovie would be on July 1. We would have to give up too much of our future to make the trade for either of them. Plus, I do not think either of them will sign here. I pray I am wrong, but that is just my feeling.

  33. 33 eye on the island

we have to trade either witt or martinek if we want the young guys to play- w/ sutton on the books for next year and meyer coming back this year we are about to have too many vets in the way.

  34. 34 derek

I disagree about Marty, he fits Gordon’s system perfectly, is inexpensive, and our best two-way dman. He can help guys like Hillen learn the defensive game. Trading him away for a 2nd rounder is not the right deal. With Marty’s annual injury, you offer a youngster a spot every year. It’s a win-win. You keep your best dman and still give time to the up and comers.

  35. 35 Patrick Flatleaver

Sutton frustrates me. For a big guy, he sure is frail. He’s very affective when healthy.

  36. 36 Jromo

Bottom line, let’s just not have a repeat of last year where we balked on trades (Satan) and got nothing in return for these guys.

  37. 37 jonsson3

i say we retire #91 in honor of butch goring
and give tavares #92. i see #91 and i can’t help but see goring and his cheesy helmet with his long hair hanging out the back. it’s gonna bother me to see another #91. anyone else feel the same way?

  38. 38 Big Dog

I like Marty, problem is that he is 32. By the time we are ready to make a run, he’ll be 34-35. No reason to block a blue line prospect with him. Now all we need are blue line prospects….

Actually, I think Hillen has looked GREAT. See what can happen when a spot opens up (Sutton)? Sometimes the kid steps up and takes it! Not used to that on the Island the last few years.

  39. 39 Izzy Franchise

jonsson3…no because we’re not gonna get Tavares

  40. 40 admin

Good morning, everyone. Let me make this the first of probably many times over the next few hours where I declare there is no news to report.

First piece of misinformation in Comments stated as fact for the day: the Islanders could not find any takers for Miro Satan last year, not even for a 5th round draft pick. A year later, Pittsburgh puts Miro on waivers. There seems to be a trend. The Islanders had one final-hour offer for Ruslan Fedotenko for not much, but the other GM went elsewhere.

Two notes: as much as I know it takes readers away from my site, please remember what I posted in the main - that now that it’s deadline day expect most if not all trades to be broken on TSN or Sportsnet.

And the odds of the Islanders acquiring a big name today, and then getting that big name to sign a long-term extension with them today, are about 1-in-1,000.

    So there is a chance…CB

  41. 41 jonsson3

thats ok izzy. but why do you say that? you think we’re gonna pick hedman?

  42. 42 Ed J

Good Luck CB, its going to be a looong fun day and I am sure EPSN will not care cause it hates hockey ( cept for Linda Cohn but shes a rags fan but at lease she loves hockey )

    anyways….

    HAPPY HOCKEY TRADING DEADLINE DAY!!!!

  43. 43 Izzy Franchise

Jonsson3 - i think it’ll be hedman or duchene. we’re not getting that first pick so we all shouldnt get so excited.

  44. 44 Fred

What of the comments made last night on Versus by some of the commentators regarding the Islanders and playing only 17. They were raising concerns about the Islanders not playing their best possible line up because Guerin was healthy and they still scratched him because of a potential trade. They were raising question to the NHL about possibly investigating the Islanders. Have there been any words or concerns around NVMC regarding this topic?

  45. 45 Patrick Flatleaver

Fred.. hard to investigate. They have the worst record with their best lineup, and are winning without it.

  46. 46 Pete M

Well then they better investigate Phoenix for sitting Morris the last week. Not only that, they won both games that Guerin sat out so not much of an argument IMHO.

  47. 47 valentino

    Fred

This wasnt just an ISLANDERS problem, although they did start it. Most the teams brokering trades for a player on thier roster followed suit and sat the player. I guess no one wanted to have a Doug Weight situation where their most marketable asset gets hurt.

If the NHL has a problem with it, most the league is guilty, not just the Isles.

  48. 48 jonsson3

why wont we get the first pick?

  49. 49 Larry Ziegler

Tampa,Toronto,Phoenix,Florida, washington all sat players for trade reasons

  50. 50 Izzy Franchise

    because we’re the Islanders.

  51. 51 BSTFAN

CB, I heard a rumor that the Islanders might call up some of Bridgeports tough guys. Either Pascal Morency or Mike Haley. Have you heard anything?

  52. 52 IncarceratedBOB

Lets Go Islanders !!!!!!!!!lets get some trades going Garth

  53. 53 Will77

CB: What are the odds the Isles could put about 3(or more) picks together to jump into around the #5 pick?

  54. 54 kevin fitz

    Will77,
we need to give up SJ’s first round pick and bailey or okposo to get in the top 5 again.

  55. 55 IncarceratedBOB

This is the Islanders Official Trade Deadline wish List :

    1.Getting a Defensive Prospect (ie.O’Bryne From MTL)
    2.Getting a 2nd ,and a 3rd are a must for today.When todays over we must have a 2nd & a 3rd at least
    3.Getting Some size-Upfront.

Now if we accomplish these three goals when trading today i will consider it a success….Remember we have obtained a late 1st round pick already

  56. 56 JoeRiverside

The Devils radio announcers were complaining thet teams that don’t put their best team on the ice (i.e. sitting players like Islanders, Toronto and Phoeniz have) impact the playoff race. Thinking being that they are playing against teams in the race. They thought that maybe NHL will review this. I say bull to that. Hockey should be a free market. NHL shouldn’t force teams to play everyone. The Islanders et al have a right to protect their best interests/assets (ensure player in pending trade doesn’t get injured). The Islanders have to do what is best for the Islanders, not helping someone get into the playoffs. For teams needing to get into the payoff round, I have one word. WIN.
    JoeRiverside

  57. 57 Wedregast

I bet by 3pm, Guerin is gone for either a 2/3rd pick; and Hilbert is gone for either a 4/5th. I think otherwise, Martinek is the only other Islander that might go, but probably won’t unless a team is desperate enough to take a flyer on him at 2:59

Its going to be quiet until after noon.

As for us getting the first pick… I’m going to set myself on us getting 2nd or 3rd. So if we end up with Hedman or Duchene I won’t be disappointed, but if we get 1st and Tavares I can be overjoyed.

  58. 58 trippstar

Burke in Toronto held out Antropov and at least one other possible player to trade yesterday. So its not just snow doing this.

  59. 59 Islander505

    FWIW
For those of you who are “embarassed” by the Guerin situation….i.e. making him sit the last two games..

The following players were “healthy scratches” last night.
    Toronto- Antropov and Moore
    TB-Recchi and Malik
    Wash- Nylander
    CMH- Peca
    Fla- Boynton
    Atl-Perrin

Most or all will be moved in some way today.
Nature of the business in 2009.

  60. 60 Adam M.

Izzy: We might get the first pick and still lose the lottery for all we know. If that’s the case, worst we can do is draft #2 as I understand it.

I wouldn’t be too upset drafting Duchene. The kid is incredible. Great hands.

  61. 61 Joey303

For those worried that Atlanta is losing and the Islanders are winning, and that might impact finishing last, the Islanders go on a very hard 6 game road trip next week. We have won all of 6 games on the road this year. SIX!! Lets watch the young guys get experience, and enjoy!!

  62. 62 Robert

After four days of torture, please something of significance!! Guerin has been sitting for 4 days, then they say Weight probably going with him, and before it was known Hunter was hurt, he left (Guerin style) after a pre-game skate…. I thought we would lave landed Gretzky by now!! Best case scenario today, my wish list includes a first round pick and/or an “A” list prospect!!

  63. 63 Cody

I’m feeling cautiously optimistic today. 6:09 on the west coast but it’s all good. Everyone likes to talk about Boston, Montreal, the big buyers, but nobody’s talking about teams like Nashville, Carolina, Florida, Buffalo, Minnesota, Dallas, and many others.

As trades start to happen, these teams, each of them a contender, are going to look to acquire players. There’s too many buyers and too few sellers for me to believe any of these “Guerin for a 3rd” type of rumors.

I think… I hope we’re going to be very happy with Garth today.

  64. 64 Adam M.

    Rob,
I understand the excitement of today (and potential dissapointment), but any ‘torture’ that’s being had is set off by yourself my friend.

  65. 65 avolp55TURGEONFICHAUD

Wow- cannot believe its Wednesday at 9:15 am and Bill Guerin is still an Islander!? It is safe to say at least half of us have completely wasted at least a third of our time since Saturday wondering about what our return might be. Given the delays and the obvious problems getting a deal to go through, I have a feeling todays draft day may not even include Bill Guerin. To be quite honest, if its a 3rd rd pick, I’d rather have BG stick out the last 20 games of the yr and continue to help out the young guys. Nobody has claimed Guerin is a stud, because he’s not, but he isn’t a slouch. Anything less than a 2nd round pick for an NHL captain would raise some serious ? IMO.

Also, I feel Martinek could be on his way out. Could be the ONLY islander we deal! It’s hard to argue with his value as a true Isles fan, Radek is the most underrated player I’ve seen in my life. I view the Martinek situation as a win-win. We have him under contract (GREAT DEAL) for another 2 years I think, so I would love to keep him. Also, as CB noted the NHL has taken notice of Radek and our return could be as high as a 2nd rounder (can you believe- an equal return for Guerin and Martinek??). At this point, due to Radek’s age and the fact that his services are in demand, as an Islander fan I think you can be willing to part with Martinek (espescially if Witter stays).

Also, I think Witt will stay depending on the offer and I do not think Snow can move Weight unless he packages him with Guerin or another player.

Either way this goes down, LETS GO ISLES!

KEEP IT UP CB- WE LOVE YOU

  66. 66 Jromo

Cody, good point. With very few sellers this year, supply and demand should be in the islanders favor. Let’s hope so anyway.

  67. 67 cgs878

Good luck in Room 6 today, Chris. Thank you for all of your efforts to get us the “behind the scenes” information on the Islanders.

  68. 68 Will77

kevin fitz: most likely, but if we offered SJ’s first, Ottawas first, and Bostons 2nd, I think a team would have to think it over

  69. 69 isles3113

i would be upset with a 3rd rounder for guerin, snow should pull for a 2nd

  70. 70 Adam M.

Kevin fitz: We don’t own Ottawas first.

  71. 71 doc

Why would you trade Hilbert for a 4/5th round pick. Makes no sense. A guy like Hilbert who is willing to do his job, fill the role he fills and competes EVERY NIGHT is hard to find.

Essentially you would be just giving the guy away.

    He’s a keeper.

The ONLY reason he’s included in a deal I think, is if it’s in a package with another player going to a team in order to make the deal work.

    DOC

  72. 72 Larry Ziegler

Wil77, we dont have Ottawa’s 1st round pick

  73. 73 Dennis Vaske

Is it possible I saw Garth Snow at the LI Marriot late last night?

  74. 74 ISLESFAN999

I would only take a 3rd if we were also getting a good prospect. I might even just prefer a top 5 prospect on any team.

  75. 75 kevin fitz

I know, Adam. Will77 said we have Ottawa’s first pick, not me :)

  76. 76 james

Post 71 Doc. I think Hilbert is a ufa this summer. Might as well try and get something for him. Then maybe tr and sign him in the offseason

  77. 77 mrlbem

You can only receive sportsnet’s live streaming coverage if you’re in Canada and TSN requires me to download some microsoft program, which my work computer will reject. So, I guess I’m stuck here clicking “refresh” every few minutes. Hey, better to be with friends, right?

  78. 78 doc

    Good point James.

  79. 79 Joey303

You can trade Hilbert for a pick because he is UFA. If you can get a decent pick, trade him and sign him in July.

  80. 80 nystrom23

I wish we could already see a trade today so far the most boring deadline day in recent memory

  81. 81 Islander505

Agreed Doc…the only way Hilbert is moved today is if he is a “pot sweetener”.

Like Witt, I think Snow will demand too high a draft pick (mid 2md) for him in a straight trade.
And no one will go that high cuz Andy is a UFA. (Whom I think Garth should be comfortable in getting to re-sign if he wants him..Andy is a “family” guy…professionally and personally).

  82. 82 John

Islanders trade teamed sponsored blog to the Rangers for Sean Avery and 1st rd pick. :)

  83. 83 i4e11

Trades never start until at least 11. The lack of activity at 9:30 AM is and has always been the status quo.

  84. 84 MikeF

Maybe now that Kaberle is off the market, Martinek comes up people’s charts. He’s not the offenseive stud Kaberle is, but his skating & puck handling could be a big plus for buyers.

  85. 85 Mopits

I would love to see another first round pick come to us somehow. Then we could package the 2 #1’s and next years # 1 to whomever has the second pick (or first if we come in second) and we grab Tavares AND Hedman. It would be a lot to give up but considering we have 3 seconds, we’d be in good position still get talent AND get two franchise players at two diff spots. Think Garth has the stones to do that???

  86. 86 Will77

lol completely my bad, I’m only half paying attention while I’m here at work. I was thinking “I guess we got SJ’s first a while back and I forgot about it”, not that the deal with Ottawa is how we got it. Channeling my inner Homer Simpson: D’Oh!

  87. 87 Bri on Li

Thanks again CB for giving my wife another reason to think I’m crazy. Happy TD Day!

  88. 88 jay

I would do Guerin for a 2nd rd pick.

  89. 89 JPinVA

Hilbert: They have Park signed for next year, and tambellini may be the “new hilbert”. If 2009-10 is going to be a year of growth, then andy needs to be off the island. Guys like Park, Bergenhiem, Jackman, Okposo, Hunter and Colliton can all be PKers next year and every one of them has more offensive upside than Andy.
I think Andy has made great strides this year, but he’s a UFA, and there’s no reason to tie up his roster spot with 3 or 4 potential 3rd/4th liners in the system. We need to start getting folks on this team that can score 20 goals or show some toughness so others can. A third rounder for Andy would be fine.
If they love him that much they’ll bid for him in July.

  90. 90 Islander505

    Bri on Li…

Ya want your wife to really think you’ve gone over the edge?
Sit naked in front of your computer, one hand in your lap and yell out “Woo-Hoo” every 30 minutes or so.
    Believe me….it works!!

  91. 91 IncarceratedBOB

    With Pronger off the market

BRENDAN WITT’S VALUS HAS JUST RISEN !!!!
This Islander fans can be the key to us having a very good deadline. BRENDAN WITT is now back in play

  92. 92 Larry Ziegler

Will77, the Isles traded Campoli and Comrie to Ottawa for Mcammond and SJ 1st round pick. Ottawa had SJ 1st

  93. 93 Tim

Why is Pronger off the market?

  94. 94 Cruicky

Looks like this market is CLOSED. Someone flip the sign.

  95. 95 steve

cb..so there is a chance. love the dumb/dumber reference. now i’ll go lick a street light.

  96. 96 Jim

I think you are right Cruicky. Teams are now trying to sign guys they were rumored to be trading last week. That should tell everyone that the “buyers” aren’t offering much to the “sellers”. The only way it’ll change is if somebody makes a huge move (Bouwmeester, etc.) and all of the other teams panic.

  97. 97 Tim

    Another D off the market… P.Kuba resigned.

  98. 98 JoeRiverside

JPinVA: Agree that Hilbert is not a key component for the future, but disagree when you say Jackman, Park have more offensive upside. I see all three in the same category - necessary role players that all teams need. I like Jackman, because he provides some protection on the ice (not afraid to drop gloves with the other team’s enforcer).

  99. 99 isles3113

IncarceratedBOB… good point, i could def see Witt for a 1st rounder possibly now that Pronger is off the market… and it doesn’t seem like Kaberle is going anywhere either… although i love Witt and his physical presence, a 1st rounder would def have to blow Garth Snow’s mind… i’m just guessing a 1st rounder btw

  100. 100 Madchef

Ghost town here at the deadline……..WTF
It is affecting my work productivity.

  101. 101 Mopits

Why is Pronger off the market?

  102. 102 Josh

The market isn’t closed. Trades usually don’t occur until 11AM — when the Western GMs arrive in their offices. Sheesh!

  103. 103 Cody

I’d like to throw two things out there as we wait for the trades to start trickling in:

    1. With Kaberle hurt and Pronger off the market, wouldn’t the value of Martinek or even (*gasp*) Witt go up? What if Florida decided to keep JayBo and push for the playoffs? That’s the three top defensemen who have been mentioned as being available not changing teams. Campoli (if you value Comrie and McAmmo as mutual salary dumps) got a 1st. Schneider, who was born in the 1960s, got a 2nd and a 3rd. Both us and the Thrashers got these returns while Pronger, Kaberle, and JayBo were all still very much in play. The value is going to be high for teams willing to part with quality D-Men.

    2. Seeing how many players got scratched yesterday to avoid injury before the trade deadline, and Kaberle’s hand affecting his trade value to the point where many speculate Burke is just going to keep him, is it possible the whole Guerin scenario could be… good for the team? If Guerin gets a good return, (mid-round 2nd & B+ prospect) Snow will have done three things by scratching our captain:

    1. Letting other teams know he’s available.
    2. Avoiding an injury before the deadline
    And, most importantly:
    3. Getting free advertising for what he’s selling.

I know this team likes getting creative with stuff like this, (15-year deals, anyone?) but seeing as other teams picked up and copied what Garth did, perhaps the Guerin situation, though frustrating for us fans, was brilliant. Or maybe he’ll get Washington’s third and we can go back to questioning why we cheer for this team in the first place.

P.S. There’s a commercial on TSN where a cute little dog has sex with a balloon animal and then falls out a window. I <3 Canada.

  104. 104 Mopits

I really don’t want to see Witt leave, he is one of the few that WANT to be here and LIKES it here - I know it’s a business but sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.

  105. 105 Tim

    Trade: Vernette for P.LeClair

  106. 106 IncarceratedBOB

    FIRST TRADE*****

vermette has been traded to columbus FOR Pascal

  107. 107 Cruicky

    LOL 103 - Sheesh,

  108. 108 tommy

    Great trade by Ottawa

  109. 109 Mike B.

Rip off! Vermette is a 2nd/3rd liner, Pascal Leclaire is a #1 goalie.

  110. 110 kevin fitz

    nice trade

  111. 111 Eric W.

    #106- Mehhh…better for Ottowa then Columbus….

  112. 112 aim

Cody 104 The only problem I have with the whole Guerin thing is that he was pulled out of the lineup at game time. If he was scratched like all of the other players were normal business….Pulling him and playing down a man for the game just heightened the drama and left the NYI looking like….well the NYI of the last 10 years

  113. 113 Mike B.

    Columbus got fleeced

  114. 114 nystrom23

    Let the deadline begin!!!

  115. 115 Cruicky

Cody 104 - you what Canada???

  116. 116 Chris H

Ottawa also got a second round pick on that one

  117. 117 Tim

Fot Ottawa? Better for Columbus. They get a player for someone who sits on the bench, frees up cap space. The Sens my be banking too much!

Wait… heard Ott got a 2nd Rounder as well Thats a better deal.

  118. 118 kevin fitz

second round pick added to the deal per tsn. Both teams get what they need there

  119. 119 Mike

Ottawa is going to win the East next year…put it in the books.

  120. 120 nystrom23

Ottawa got a 2nd round also

  121. 121 Jim

Leclaire is injured and probably out for the season.

  122. 122 nystrom23

    its a steal for ottawa

  123. 123 Coach B

Maybe some deals are slowed because of all the players placed on waivers yesterday. At noon we will know their status (Sim,ect..).

  124. 124 Cody

aim 113 That’s what’s so (potentially) brilliant about it. It was advertising. Garth knew if he pulled Guerin at the last moment and had him leave the arena, people would talk. There’s a reason this site has hit some of it’s best traffic: hockey fans, not just NHL fans, suddenly became curious as to where Guerin was going and what the return might be. There’s no such thing as bad press, and nobody can deny the amount of press Guerin has got over the last couple days.

  125. 125 Coach B

Ottawa, even when they were good did not have first class goaltending. Good move for Ottawa for next year and beyond.

  126. 126 SW

Ottawa would win the trade if Pascal Leclaire wasn’t like another DP, hurt half the time. Thats probably why Ottawa also got a 2nd round pick.

  127. 127 Michael

That is an awful deal by Howson(CBJ GM). His team is sitting in the playoffs and he’s starting to lose the lid. You don’t trade a No. 1/1A goalie for Antoine Vermette. Are you kidding me? And you throw in a 2nd rounder as well?

He just got bent over. If I’m Snow, i’m on the phone with this idiot 5 minutes ago with the potential trade of Guerin!

  128. 128 Chris TMC

    LOL its a heart, Cruicky.

    ” <3 U” means “I (eye) love (heart) You (U)”

And on that note, I <3 Brendan Witt and I do NOT want to see him voted off the Island.

  129. 129 JP39

Steal for Ottawa maybe, but Leclaire is very injury prone and was expendable to Columbus because they have arguably the best young goalie in the league, and probable Rookie of the Year in Steve Mason

  130. 130 Chris TMC

(LOL the “eye” part doesnt work. I bet it thinks its code lol.)

  131. 131 Rich

    (127) since CLB traded his second rounder in the trade it highly unlikely that we would be able to trade Guerin to them. Also, The trade isnt that bad, MAson is going to be the starter for that team for the forseable future not to mention Leclaire is hurt more often that DP.

  132. 132 Coach B

For Ottawa the risk was not too high.

  133. 133 Cruicky

I have to sitdown with my kids and get them to teach me this texting lingo.

  134. 134 potvin05

Guerin would not Ok a trade to Columbus, not to mention they don’t have a second round pick anymore.

  135. 135 Bobby

Columbus got vermette and a pick, Ottawa didn’t recieve a pick. It was a 2nd rounder

  136. 136 kevin fitz

per tsn bobby Ottawa got the 2nd round pick, not columbus

  137. 137 Mopits

    Sens DID get a # 2

  138. 138 isles316

Columbus gave up a lot. LeClare could have a come back year.

  139. 139 Big Dog

Meh. Easy for a goalie to look good in the Hitchcock system. LeClare is ok but you need a Broudeur to win with the awful defense in Ottawa. Most valuable asset in that deal is the #2 pick.

  140. 140 doc

Is LeClaire that good…? That he could transform Ottawa next season? I have to be honest… I don’t know enough about him. He seems to be hurt a lot though.

    DOC

  141. 141 C.J.

The 2nd rounder to OTT slants the deal in their favor. I do love Vermette, but Leclaire is a good goaltender as well.

I’m very surprised by the 2nd rounder.

  142. 142 duff

bingo Doc…he’s hurt all the time and could be a product of a defensive system.

  143. 143 Bobby

This was the email i got from sportsnet…..my bad

    Ottawa Senators get:
    - Pascal Leclaire
    Columbus Blue Jackets get:
    - LW Antoine Vermette
    - 2nd round pick

    More at sportsnet.ca.

  144. 144 Coach B

Don’t know if this was posted, Buffalo re-signs Tim Connolly.

  145. 145 UIF

Leclaire played great last year…for some reason I watched a lot of Columbus games last season on Center Ice. It wasn’t just the system, the guy stood on his head in a lot of games. I haven’t watched them much this year, but guess he hasn’t done nearly as well and rookie Mason took the starting job.

  146. 146 guerin13

the 2nd was thrown in b/c leclaire is very injury prone. i thought it was a fair deal. both team solve needs, if leclaire stays healthy.

  147. 147 Bobby

reports from tsn and sportsnet said that connoly DID NOT re-sign, and actually left HSBC arena in a huff.

  148. 148 Mopits

Bobby saw the same thing, that TC left the arena. Rumors of a 3 way trade between FLA, PHIL and BUF.

  149. 149 Gary

27-Tonelli (#8)- IMO JJ has the bigger upside. He looked pretty good against the Avs.

  150. 150 Swan

Eh. I understand’s CLB pov. They are finally driving into the playoffs and they get a Top 6 forward they normally wouldn’t have had a chance to get in Vermette because of his down season.

LeClaire is clearly the back up in CLB. He is a starter and is young, but he is not an elite tender right now. CLB just got a young 25 goals scorer for a backup goaltender.

  151. 151 7th Woman

how must it feel to find out you’re traded by watching TSN….

  152. 152 Larry Ziegler

Connolly did not leave in a huff, they said it is an optional practice, have been watching the whole time

  153. 153 the bomber

tsn reported tim connelly yanked from practice….they need a goalie. clemmenson??

  154. 154 cgs878

Ha ha… Pascal was just interviewed on TSN. Supposedly, he found out that he was traded by watching TSN.

  155. 155 Paul in Canada

I have to laugh at #56. Devils announcers complaining about teams not icing their best available guys. Remember when the Devils started Clemenson against the Isles in what would be a shootout deciding game for the last playoff spot? The Leafs weren’t too happy about that. The Devils have short memories - especially Chico.

  156. 156 aim

150 do you REALLY think that people in the hockey world had no clue Guerin was unhappy until Logan mentioned it? No way!

  157. 157 Matt S

Trade Martinek for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Keep Witt for much needed size and physical presence to help out the youngsters. I have no idea why some people are so willing to lose Witt. Streit can’t play every shift.

  158. 158 Scott, East Meadow Long Island

Just read that Calgery is offering up their 1st Rd Pick for a Dmen - Lets hope Snow picks up the phone….

  159. 159 IncarceratedBOB

Deals start trickling in after 12:00 est …so guys just be calm & when you see all these defensemen being either resigned by there teams or (Like Pronger) taken off the market by there GM’S , Then that make our 2 guys WITT & IR MARTINEK Much more appealing for a desperate GM….

Im telling you guys WITT will get more back then Guerin so everyone uptight about Guerin….Just chill because we are not getting more then a 3rd & now that the story about his discontent with Gordan came out-that actually hurt his value, every GM Now knows NO WAY SNOW CAN HAVE HIM BACK…

So thank Mr.Logan for breaking that story at this time of the year-Every GM knows Guerin is done on the island , so why pony up a 1st or a 2nd-They will offer Low & Snows hands are tied big time…

Why do you think the team backed out Saturday Night ???? That mystery team was ready to pull trigger , then that GM prbly recognized he was offering to much…THANKS LOGAN !!! U IDIOT !

  160. 160 cp oakville

When was there a team Guerin was really happy to play for, for his full contract?

  161. 161 Cody

Brian Burke goes on TSN and announces Moore + Antropov will be traded.

Kinda puts the whole Logan article into perspective, eh?

  162. 162 Nyles

man this is exciting . . . where’s the action?

  163. 163 Josh

Looks like the children have the day off.

  164. 164 Islesnut

Seriously, what in the world was Greg Logan thinking? Now he can write an article bashing Snow about this is all he got for so and so?

Greg, you can write that because you caused it…

  165. 165 Patrick Flatleaver

damn Logan for doing his job!!!!

relax everyone, and enjoy the festivities

  166. 166 nystrom23

Rumor has Felix Potivin is comming out of retirement too

  167. 167 cgs878

GMs aren’t stupid. Do you think that they listen to podunk little newspaper stories/blogs? Riiiight.

  168. 168 SS

Guerin’s value has more to do with the number of teams who want him than whether the Isles want him back. It’s obvious to everyone, regardless of Logan’s story, that the Isles would be better served trading him than keeping him.

  169. 169 Julie

165: Seriously. What happened to people getting booted if they don’t follow the Comments guidelines?

  170. 170 Jim

If Logan was doing his job, he would have reported the discontent two months ago when it happened, not a week before the trade deadline.

  171. 171 SS

And regardless of whether Logan reported it or not, word gets around the league quickly.

  172. 172 Chris H

Tim Connolloy signed w Buffalo - 2 yr deal $9m

  173. 173 Dan

It’s funny that while we’re all talking about teams worrying about the cap GM’s are signing Tim Connolly to $4.5 mil /yr deals.

  174. 174 derek

Looks like Timmy left with a smile, not in a huff, as reported.

  175. 175 Swan

Agreed 4.5 high for Connolly, but he is a good citizen. Point a game, when healthy and BUF lost key FA stars the past few years.

  176. 176 ISLESFAN999

cant believe he got so much. thats a lot for a hurt player who is always hurt. tsn reorted it.

  177. 177 admin

updated with minor details on how trades get finalized and announced…CB

  178. 178 TuxTax

The only problem I have with Logan and the Cablevision owned newspaper that shall not be named is that when a story is written about an Islander positive, its a cookie cutter 1/4 page story. But with anything negative about the team they get a full spread with color and multiple viewpoints from the Ranger fans…err…reporters…ehhhh…Ranger fans acting as reporters.

  179. 179 Mopits

Connolly is SO not worth 4.5 annually.

  180. 180 Matt

Seriously, don’t blame Logan he is just doing his job. If this did actually happen which I suspect and have suspected all along you can blame our wonderful coach for talking to the press. I have stated this numerous times and been blasted for it on this blog for being “negative”. Gordon screwed up and should have kept his mouth shut. He is to blame, not Logan, you can’t get mad at a fish for swimming.

  181. 181 kevin fitz

Connolly has the ability for that kind of money, but not the stamina.

  182. 182 Giaco

Pronger, Nieds, Bou, Connolly, Kuba - all not being moved.

We should see Martinek or Witt moved due to lack of D on the market.

  183. 183 Dominick from Wake Forest, NC

What else could Buffalo do- given all of the players they keep losing. They had to offer him that kind of money.

  184. 184 Swan

Eh. Guerin and Weight make close to 4.5 per. Rather have Connolly than Guerin (rather have Weight than Tim).

  185. 185 Scott, East Meadow Long Island

Rags are interested in bringing in Recchi

  186. 186 Matt

I was just thinking the same thing Swan. LOL! Once again I repeat Gordon is to blame!

  187. 187 derek

    Giaco #185

If that’s the case, then Garth better start really high for each.

  188. 188 nystrom23

Since alot of these guys are not being moved value has risen with our guys

  189. 189 7th Woman

Gee CB, too bad divorces aren’t as easy as trades.

  190. 190 Mikey

Well, maybe the Columbus deal is an indication that Dougie Weight is off the market. For months, there have been rumours that Columbus was trying to swing a deal for Weight. I think Ottawa picked their pockets. I can’t believe they got a 2nd in addition to Leclaire for a player who will be a UFA in a year.

  191. 191 Bobby

Tell that to Bill Guerin # 191. The guy has waited patiently after being yanked from the lineup Saturday.

  192. 192 Bobby

    now # 189…i guess 2 got removed

  193. 193 R Farina

Boy am I a loser. I name my kids after ex hockey players and then force them to live in squalor and feed them nothing but franks and beans. But I DID win the first 7th man contest!

  194. 194 Jim

Leclaire has never played more than 54 games in a season. He’s more injury prone than Martinek. Columbus threw him in to get rid of his salary.

  195. 195 Phil

Interesting stuff on the trade process…Keep up the good work!

  196. 196 Swan

    Hey Rog.

  197. 197 Larry Ziegler

It will pick up after 12, thats when those players on waivers clear and can be sent to the minors to clear cap room.

  198. 198 dedshark

with pronger off the market… you think any teams would look more into witt or martinek??

  199. 199 isles72

pretty silly that the league schedules games on deadline day

  200. 200 Coach B

Billy Jaffe is going to be on NHL Live at noon.

  201. 201 LooNTooNs

Jaffe was on “Hockey Fantasy” last night on NHL network. Hes great, I just hope they dont take him away from us!

  202. 202 blitz

    CB,

Thanks for the new updates that provide some ‘technical’ information on the processing of trades.

I know many fans just want names/picks/players to chew on, but the technical side is the ‘true value’ to the site…

  203. 203 SW

199 isles72: Agreed, silly to have games when so many trades go down. It could be worse the deadline was supposed to be the 3rd. They changed it to the 4th because there was like 12 games yesterday.

  204. 204 the bomber

ohhh they will. hes as good as gone…

  205. 205 BlankMan

    pho & calgary deal

almost done Olii Jokinen going to calgary

  206. 206 Cody

Now it starts. Calgary adding Jokinen makes a great team even greater.

There’s 14 other teams in the West, let’s say 11 that are realistic buyers. Someone’s gotta get desperate soon, I just hope Garth is on the other end of the line when that happens.

  207. 207 Matt Brosseau

Boy, Olli would make Calgary a real contender out West…if Kiprusoff can get hot they could make it to the Campbell Conference finals easy.

  208. 208 DyingofDeath

I have learned a lot from these posts today. (1)There really is a strong fan base for our islanders regardless of the amount of people that can ever make it to the NVMC for a game that isn’t against the rangers or on a saturday. (2)Most Of you people arent gm’s or coaches or scouts for a reason!(3) Thank god you for number 2

  209. 209 Matt

Yeah everyone is trembling because Jokinnen is on Calgary. LOL. This site gets more ridiculous by the second. Guy has never even been in the playoffs!

  210. 210 Larry Ziegler

Unfortunatley, I don’t think the Islanders have the players other teams want, I think all of us Isles fans are going to be disappointed come 3:30pm eastern time

  211. 211 Matt

Isn’t that the truth incarcaratedBOB. Excellent!

  212. 212 cgs878

The Islanders have nobody that anybody wants. This will be a quiet day. Guerin will be back in the lineup on Thursday night.

  213. 213 Vukota

Where are all of these out of state trolls coming from?

  214. 214 Smith77

My predictions are that Guerin and Martinek get traded and that’s it. I think, as CB stated, we’ll get a 3rd or maybe a 2nd for Guerin. I think Guerin’s value has dropped now that the league knows he’s going to get traded and we’re trying to unload him. I think Martinek will get traded also, just a hunch.

I don’t see Hilbert getting traded. Even though he is a UFA, I think Gordon likes him and he plays a lot of different situations on this team. I think Weights injury will keep him off of the trade wire. Same with Sillinger. I don’t see Witt getting moved, nor do I think we should move him.

  215. 215 Big Dog

    Leopold to Calgary

  216. 216 Swan

Calgary definitely improved, assuming Jokinen picked up. Leopold much better than Morris, who was rumored.

  217. 217 Vukota

    2 Vukota’s???? Let’s dance!!!!

  218. 218 isles316

vukota I always have your back, but not on that one. haha

  219. 219 Vukota

    That’s an imposter

  220. 220 Moose

Doesn’t guerin and comrie make 4.5 mil, its fine that he’s making that much, buffalo won’t regret it like the rags with gomez and drury

  221. 221 isles316

Well, if I were to emulate any man, it would be you Vukota. I have to say he has good taste.

As for trades, the next few hours should be fun.

  222. 222 felix

at least there is closure at some point today.

  223. 223 The Real Vukota

Ha 316. A little creepy but funny. Jk….

  224. 224 TXNYI

CB - So is Garth taking these trade calls with a group of people around him including guys like Jankowski or is he just by himself in his office? I assume that he has a computer in front of him with the Isles notes on all players on all teams, including prospects in case he needs some quick info, right? Just wondering how this whole thing works from his side. Here’s hoping he makes some good deals today. All quiet so far….

  225. 225 James

Man there are a bunch of sad sad pessimistic people on this blog. Geez really lol, this isnt the managment of th mid 90’s.

Get over it and think positive, if you think negative thoughts, then the negative will happen

So to me, if something doesnt go down I am blaming all of you pessimistic people

  226. 226 Pete DeBenedetto

I teach thrid grade here in Jersey and in between reading and math lessons we check the trade tracker on TSN…..Higher Education at its best.

  227. 227 Richie

Matt (219) you do realize that Jokinen has averaged 75 pts a season over te past 5 years and 84 pts a season over the past 3…He’s a first line player and to think that he doesn’t improve any team he goes to is rediculous, the only reason hes never been in the playoffs is because he’s played on the terrible panters for a majority of hs career. You are seriously underestimating his abilities!

  228. 228 The Real Vukota

I’m guessing Snow is sking upstate somewhere and he has Curtis the janitor working the phones.

  229. 229 Richie

hmm i guess 219 was deleted lol, 209 then

  230. 230 Michael

How is it that Garth Snow hasn’t done a thing yet? Man.. looks like were stuck with these overpaid geisers.

  231. 231 The Real Vukota

Relax Mike. It’s only noon. What is wrong with some of you?

  232. 232 James

yea I agree, Jokinen is a really good addition to Calgary

  233. 233 nickystix

TSN-Jordan Leopold to the Calgary Flames for Lawrence Nycolat, a prospect and a draft pick

  234. 234 Michael

What’s wrong with me is that these guys have been available for weeks, Guerin pulled 4 days ago.. and yet he’s still not traded! What am I supposed to think? Snow has absolutely no idea what he is doing. It’s comical!

BTW, CB, keep up the great work. Awesome!!!!

  235. 235 Swan

James, I love your optimism and glad you will not change. And there are reasons to see the glass as half full.

Too early for me to tell we are out of the mismanagement period. Clearly, we are not as bad as the mid/late 90s. But we are just a year into yet another coaching/system change. Another last place finish. Another worst attendance record in hockey.

For the next year or two, will have to live with a coach who is learning as he goes (e.g., he will never have separate meetings with prospects and undercut his captain again in his coaching career), a GM who is cutting his teeth, an owner who is also learning as he goes (e.g., Wang won’t have that hockey committee again in his ownership career).

Can’t fault long-time fans who are taking a wait and see. Because we and the Franchise has been here before. It is not the first coaching change, not the first rebuild, not the first last place finish in hockey, not the first upcoming #1 or #2 draft pick, not the first rebuilding roster of decent looking prospects like KO and Bailey.

  236. 236 Danny from Section 306

Of the top 25 players available, as written by TFP.com, the islanders are interested in exactly zero (0) of them.

  237. 237 AM

Keenan knows what he’s getting with Jokinen.

  238. 238 Chris TMC

Mike 230: What are you talking about? They arent “stuck” with anything, and if they are able to trade Bill Guerin at all it is because of HIS generosity to this organization and absolutely nothing else- because Garth cant do a thing unless Bill himself decides to let him. That is what a NMC is. But how do you show your gratitude for Billy even considering something that he by NO means has to even think about? You bash the guy. That is just wrong.

  239. 239 Chris TMC

Danny (236): The teams that go for the top players at the draft deadline do so because they are making cup runs. Do the Islanders look like they are making a cup run to you?

  240. 240 Matt

last post. Not saying it was a bad addition to Calgary but to say that trade is going to drive the value of Witt up I think is a stretch. He is a good player.

  241. 241 The Real Vukota

That’s because we are sellers Daniel. Hello!!!!

  242. 242 Tony F.

Hey Michael (234), who signed Streit?

  243. 243 cgs878

Ugh, I’m tired of listening to the TSN guys. Off to NHL Live… go!

  244. 244 isles316

The Isles will make two or three minor trades. If someone offers a first rounder for Witt, he might go also.

It’s only 12pm. Im watching Jaffe on NHL Live.

  245. 245 jay

I agree, Guerin is a great guy. He decicded to come to a miserable franchise. I would hope if they trade him he might possibly re-sign here next yr. He likes long island.

  246. 246 BR

Who is reporting that the Flames picked-up Jokinen? It’s definitely not on TSN.

  247. 247 The Real Vukota

Isles is that what Jaffe said about the Isles?

  248. 248 The Real Vukota

Jay he decided to come here because we gave him more then anybody else. That’s the only reason he came here. Who are we kidding?

  249. 249 Eric W.

Jon Sim and Satan cleared Waivers according to TSN

  250. 250 Gary9-19-22

get a 2nd rounder for Guerin… on draft day trade all the Isles picks to whomever has the number 2 pick….. why not? Basically 4 picks in the 1st and 2nd round plus all low rounds for an #2 overall pick.

On draft day make the first two picks, pack your bags and go drink some beer….

  251. 251 isles316

No, im just guessing, he is on now. Ill put up what he or anyone says on this show.

  252. 252 Ray

Wasn’t Nycholat just claimed on waivers? Wow he could have just been claimed. Now calgary just ripped them off.

  253. 253 Don Barzini

Anyone else get the feeling today is going to be a whole-lotta-nuthin’ as far as the Islanders go? I mean, I am sure they will make a deal or two but it just won’t match the excitement that has been had around here the last few days. That would be typical, right?
(I’m posting this, that way I can be completely wrong and we actually get great news!)

  254. 254 James

same here I have the radio show on right now.

Remember with all the cap issues of teams that are rumored to want the Isles players, they have to move cap space FIRST before the Isles even come into play.

  255. 255 isles316

Buffalo acquires Tellgvist for a 4th rounder from PHO

  256. 256 Akeem

Looks like tellqvist has 4th round value. Why not Joey Mac?

  257. 257 Mikey

Looks like nobody picked up Sim off waivers. I’m not suprised; we’ll probably buy him out in June.

  258. 258 wow

I like how people are bashing Snow about not making any moves yet. Very funny. As if he can just call teams and demand 1st or 2nd round picks and they will just say duh ,,okay. Anyone ever think maybe the other teams are trying to low ball Garth and he doesn’t want to give players away for a 3rd if he can hold out for a 2nd? Just because you want him to rush into a deal doesn’t make it the right thing to do. Believe it or not he actually knows more about what’s going on in negotiations than you do.

  259. 259 James

    Well said wow

  260. 260 The Real Vukota

If we make a small deal I hope it’s for a legit heavyweight.

  261. 261 Danny from Section 306

I understand that we’re not going for any cups - but trading for a scorer and signing him long term, IMO, is a step in the right direction. We can only have so many picks for so many years…

  262. 262 James

    Kings re-sign Odonnell and Ersberg

  263. 263 Cody

How soon we forget Snow turning Comrie/Campoli into a 1st.

    How soon we forget.

  264. 264 admin

Three hours to go before deals must be filed with the NHL. Now the clock really starts ticking…CB

  265. 265 James

    Morrisonn claimed by the Stars

Gerber released by ottawa and claimed by the Leafs

  266. 266 isles316

If Jordon Leopold got two prospects and a 2nd from Col, what can Witt get? Honestly, if something like that comes up you have to do it right?

  267. 267 Butchy

Teams have to decide if they want a guy like Guerin over Satan - if they want someone for nothing, try Satan. If they think Guerin will provide real value, then they must decide how much to give up. I think we’re not going to see the type of movement from an Islander perspective that we all think, perhaps Martinek gets moved (Bully for Garth if he can get ANYTHING for that guy) MAYBE someone caves and gives a 2nd for Guerin - but that’s it.

  268. 268 wow

Yes it would be typical that Islanders fans expect some massive deal, hype themselves up, make up rumors, call the gm and owner names, and then get upset when we get a couple of second round picks instead of picking up Crosby and Ovechkin in a trade for Hilbert and Tambellini. Yes, very typical. THE SKY IS FALLING,, THE SKY IS FALLING !!

  269. 269 bcarey

i will be shocked if i leave work today and bill guerin is still an islander.

  270. 270 Michael

And that latest post by Chris Botta is the closure on the mess that is this franchise. Thanks for always keeping honest with us, Chris. And I look forward to seeing the parade of old losers on the ice tomorrow night. My god, put this franchise out of its misery already. Snow making decisions? No wonder why well never be a real NHL team. Later ya’ll.

  271. 271 DPS

We could have used Morrison. Garth asleep at the wheel on that one

  272. 272 BR

Wow (258) - Agreed. To that I would add, does anyone ever think that maybe some Isles fans are grossly over-estimating just how much demand there is out there for the Guerins, the Weights, the Martineks and the Hilberts?

  273. 273 The Real Vukota

Yeah we could have used another 34 yr player. Some of you guys really have no clue. I can’t even read 3 posts without my eyes starting to bleed.

  274. 274 derek

WOW said it right. Maybe he’s being lowballed and isn’t willing to dance. I’m sure he’s not going to give up something for nothing, just for the sake of making a trade. That would be ridiculous and we’d be calling for his head.

  275. 275 James

    exactly Vukota

  276. 276 Marc from Troy

Yup. 100% Snow’s fault that the Isles haven’t made any further trades since Campoli/Comrie. Has absolutely NOTHING to do with the other teams potentially involved with deals - Guerin’s included.

Anything to take shots at Snow and this organization for way too many of this team’s alleged fans.

  277. 277 Sean

I agree we are people are over-estimating the demand for all our players, but snow has dragged this guerin deal on for way to long. He needs to trade guerin for a 3rd round pick if he gets the chance. It would look awful if he pulled guerin for 3 games and he has to come back and play for our team.

  278. 278 Priest

Hey Chris (if you have time to answer questions, I’m sure you are working the phones, etc)

How does TSN/Sportsnet (although in my experience, mostly TSN) break the stories. I mean, what kind of contacts do they use? Is it PR guys like you that leak it out early or guys in the league office on the conference call or what? And how easy would it be for the league to try to put a stop to it (if it is league guys)?

  279. 279 eye on the island

im dumbfounded as to the post lambasting islander fans for being let down for not being a part of a major deal-

there has been no discussion of the islanders pulling off a blockbuster, just more discussion along the lines of which vets will be moved

can we stop the nonsense and have a serious discussion as to the merits of which vets would be better off being dealt

  280. 280 admin

Let people have their opinions. Stop flaming them and questioning their loyalty. Thank you…CB

  281. 281 James

Again Michael his statement is true, probably something not major

What do you expect? Tkachuk and Boyes for Guerin??

Really? I agree 100% with others who say that most of you pessimistic fans have just fueled rumors and ridiculous ideas of getting players we all know we wont get. Then you have the nerve to get pissed at the team for not getting those players.

Sit back and relax, take a deep breath and let us see what happens.

Oh and a reports says Hejduk will NOT be moved by the Avalanche, awwww so sorry. What you going to blame Snow for that not going down too?

  282. 282 Islesnut

Ouch, CB, way to bust the bubble.

I’ll be disgusted if all we come out of all this nonsense is one measily second or third round draft pick.

  283. 283 ken

    did sim clear?

  284. 284 admin

    (279) They get it straight from the NHL.

    Sim cleared…CB

  285. 285 eye on the island

if snow gets minimal offers for guerin, weight, martinek he should do it just to clear up roster space for the youngsters

at this point, ice time for who we have is more important then a second or a third

    agreed?

  286. 286 isles316

Sim cleared apparently. So did Satan, speaks volumes of his value.

  287. 287 James

Yo Sean again it isnt that simple. The teams that want Guerin likely are trying to clear cap space first, Snow cant do anything until they do.

  288. 288 -Big Van Vader

If they are only going to do one deal, (if at all) they really should trade Guerin. You can’t pull him from games to protect his trade value and then not trade him. How weird is THAT going to be if we see him back on the ice as an Islander? The guy deserves WAY better than that. A real class act in todays NHL where pukes like Avery get all the attention from the media.

  289. 289 Mikey

I’d rather have Snow stand pat than accept obvious low-ball offers for our guys. If he develops a reputation for being a pushover, other GMs will try to hose him every time.

  290. 290 DangerDoug

Islesnut: Why disgusted? What were you expecting? Our talent warrants 2nd round picks… I would be excited by that.

  291. 291 MikeIsle

Yeah DPS how can we pick 1st if we actually upgrade for free!

  292. 292 James

    yup same here Doug

Again too many pessimistic Isles fans expecting too much so they can have an excuse for bashing the team.

    Really pathetic.

  293. 293 Islesnut

290- I’m expecting a solid prospect for someone. I’d like a young warm body that can play hockey…

  294. 294 Kyle

just woke up…skipping my day of classes for my favorite day of the year. The only thing I want to know is why in the world the Sabres would sign Connolly for 2 yrs/ 4.5 mil per….how many seasons has the guy played healthy??

CB thanks for all your hard work and Im sure today is one of the busiest.

  295. 295 jay

I don’t think u can expect to much. Garth did a great job with his last trade. But, if we are trying to get build from prospects, we should try and get something done today. Even if it is minor. His mistake was making all of us believe there was something on the table the othr night for Guerin

  296. 296 eye on the island

islesnut- i share your desire for prospects, but if the market does not warrant that would you rather the isles keep players not part of the long term solution?

as a gm you have to balance your needs with what you can actually get, and at this point ice time and picks are more valuable to the isles then 20 more games w/ guerin

  297. 297 James

Yea I agree, I would like a prospect too for someone, we will see in the next few hours

NOTE TO EVERYONE: The teams only have to make the deal by 3pm, so if we dont hear one by them dont freak out. Sometimes trades are rolling in hours after the deadline, they just have to notify the NHL by 3pm

  298. 298 wow

    Islesnut,,,,,thats what she said!

  299. 299 Jimmy B

How does Snow still have a job?

He gave up a #1 in the Smyth deal.

Didn’t move Fedetenko or Satan last year?

And goofed up the Guerin thing this year?

    Is Milbury still the GM?

  300. 300 Kyle

guys on tsn bashing the Islanders handling for Guerin situation…can’t say they arent right

  301. 301 nystrom23

I have faith in Snow and I dont ask me why but I have a funny feeling everyone will be shocked by the end of the day with the Isles

  302. 302 Cody

Islanders fans will always be pessimistic until this team turns around.

That being said, starting from 2007 onward, Garth Snow hasn’t made a trade that’s disappointed me yet. And that includes the Smyth trade.

At this point, you give him the benefit of the doubt.

  303. 303 James

Isles didnt screw that up Kyle

Isles are waiting for other teams to get their ducks in a row, it is the team that the Isles were dealing with that didnt get it done, TSN has it all wrong

Geez some of you really need to chill out. This blog is getting hard to read

  304. 304 loving lethbridge

JImmyB - maybe Satan’s availability this year for nothing shows what team were willing to give up for him last deadline

  305. 305 MikeIsle

Better question 299 is how did Snow GET the job??? Is it because he was such a great goalie? Doubt it.

  306. 306 Jimmy B

    Nystrom23 901–

Faith in Snow?? This guy has done 0 for the organization.

Maybe he can fire Gordon this year and blame him, a la Nolan

  307. 307 wow

Kyle what are they saying on TSN? That he should have left Guerin in the lineup and take a chance of nixing any deal if he gets injured because it would’ve been the right thing to do? I’m curious.

  308. 308 mrlbem

Then why aren’t the guys in TSN bashing Gretzky for the way he handled the Derek Morris situation? Oh, because the Islanders are an easy target and no one wants to bash the Great One. I forgot.

  309. 309 Akeem

TSN are a bunch of hacks. They have no clue what’s gone on behind the scenes with Garth andt he offers he’s fielding. Guerin is still an asset, and he’s still property of the Islanders. Had the Islanders decided to simply keep Guerin out of the lineup, say, because they wanted to play young kids, they’re completely within their rights to do so…

  310. 310 Bobby

This spotsnet email update is great, but i am now afraid my inbox is going to be bombarded over the next couple hours.

  311. 311 Islesnut

I can see it already a third rounder for Guerin. I’ll throw up…

  312. 312 isles316

When did Snow place blame on Nolan? They have a different vision.

  313. 313 Priest

So as a follow-up to my original question.. in terms of the media getting the information out, is the only difference between today and any other trade that today TSN and Sportsnet have Bob/Pierre/Nick/etc on air waiting to announce whereas on a normal day they would just wait until the next SportsCentre? I’m just curious because it seems wrong (to me) that so many players find out what their fate is by watching TV. As a spectator, I love it.

    Thanks!

  314. 314 Bob

For all of you wondering the odds of the Islanders finishing in last place in the league and actually getting the #1 pick in the draft are actually 48.2% therefore as long as they actually finish in last in the standing (MacDonald might have to play in goal for several games in a row) the worst the Isles can do is get the second pick in the draft.

I concur with others the size and speed of JJ, he said he felt slow particularly in the first period, has more upside and is more what the team needs big fast tough forwards. IE:Boston, San Jose

  315. 315 wow

Where are all the people who were saying that Snow made a mistake by putting Sim on waivers because he could’ve traded him for a pick? Snow knew that noone wanted him for a pick and HEY, look what happened, they didn’t even want him for free!

  316. 316 Jimmy B

    isles316 314

    Different vision–Nolan wanted to win??

Don’t give me the argument that Snow wants to rebuild–if he did Witt, Guerin and Weight would be on a plane right now.

  317. 317 SteveWebbClapClap

    316- Keep him!!

  318. 318 DPS

Yeah guys if we dont blindly follow orders of our fearless leaders Wang/Snow/Gordon (3 jokers) then we are not fans. OK

  319. 319 nystrom23

How many people actually thought the team was gonna be good this year and make the playoffs? 0….Give it time for prospects to pan out… Plus it hasnt been easy to attract FAs with the Colisuem is our home

  320. 320 nightfly

Kyle (298) - eh, there is (at least) one other team involved there. They may have been the ones who crapped the bed.

Saw the Leopold deal. Not a bad trade by Colorado - the 2d rounder is Montreal’s so it could be in the 45-50 range, and Wilson looks like a lot of offensive upside if he taps his potential, only 22 thus far. If Witt had brought this back I would have high-fived anyone I met in the hallway. We’ll see…

149 minutes, Garth. Tick tick tick…

  321. 321 joe

TSN guys know nothing, unlike Mr.Botta.

  322. 322 Swan

TSN killed NYI, PHO and TB for their “unfair” handling of Guerin, Morris and Recchi. They particularly hammered TB.

Their point was that veteran, good guy players deserve better and should be kept in the loop for their sake and their families. They are right.

In his defense, I think Snow def. kept Guerin informed. Recchi and Morris, def not.

  323. 323 mm30

Nokie moved again? Too bad he hurt that knee…he looked like he was going to be a player

  324. 324 The Express

TSN is just mad the Isles didn’t trade Guerin to Montreal for a 6th round pick.

  325. 325 Islesnut

Guerin for a third rounder- Snow is an amateur if that’s all he can get, pathetic… Guess what, Snow will contunue to get junk if other GM’s see this is what he takes. I rather see him not trade him, so other GM’s don’t think “O, let’s go to the isles because we won’t really have to give anything up.”

  326. 326 mLem

so he doesn’t want to win, doesn’t want to rebuild…soo then I guess he wants to lose for the fun of it?

  327. 327 Bobby

It is unfair to judge Snow on how his REBUILD is coming along until at least the middle of next season. We are in a REBUILD, the guy has done a very good job stockpiling picks for both last years & this years draft. This is how he should be doing his job. You can’t get mad at him due to the fact he found trade partners who were unable to clear the neccessary cap space to get the proposed deal done.

  328. 328 nystrom23

all i can say is i ve been a fan since their last major playoff run and havent given up on the team…. and I m not gonna start now

  329. 329 dalcy

the only thing for sure is this will be anti-climatic

  330. 330 DangerDoug

From all the reports, they didn’t hold Guerin out to be precautionary– they did it because there was a deal on the table at the time.

  331. 331 Matt Brosseau

Guerin has to go somewhere for something, anything, or else he leaves on July 1 for good. I don’t think the Isles are re-signing him, especially after this past week. I’ll take a third-rounder if that’s the asking price, but I have no designs upon that 3rd being packaged with a 1st or a player for something immediately useful.

Don’t expect a heavy to come in or be called up for tomorrow’s game, even though it’s obvious what’s going to happen then.

  332. 332 isles316

Snow wants to win a cup and the Isles weren’t in position to do that. Nolan didn’t want to buy into a rebuild because he wanted to be competative.

Snow didn’t blame him for that and either did Nolan blame Snow.

    It was circumstance.

  333. 333 Eric

TSN says Jokinen to Calgary for possibly Aucoin, Lombardi and a 1st rounder

  334. 334 James

    exactly Doug

To me it was the other team that dropped the ball on this one. Yet the pessimistic Isles fans want to blame the Isles for it.

TSN dont know that they are talking about.

  335. 335 Mikey

People need to wake up and face reality. Satan makes one mil less than Guerin and has the same amount of points. Satan CLEARED waivers today. What do people expect? We will be lucky if some team takes Guerin off our hands for a 3rd rounder. Snow’s hands are tied b/c Guerin just isn’t that good anymore.

  336. 336 James

yikes Eric, to me that is a great deal for PHX too

  337. 337 MikeD

Let me turn everyones attention away from Guerin for a minute. I never thought of Andy Hilbert as anything more than a 4th line borderline healthy scratch player until this year. He really fits in with Gordon’s system and could be a solid third liner. Why haven’t we tried to re-sign him?

  338. 338 mm30

nokie goes for steve montador bos/ana

lombardi,prust,1st rd pick for jokinen…good move by phoenix

  339. 339 James

it is Lombardi and a 1st rounder for Jokinen

    no Aucoin in that deal

  340. 340 dynasty23x4

i think we have to just be thankful to have garth running things. it could always be worse..did everyone forget about milbury??

  341. 341 DanNOLA

It’s only 12:30 pm est, and already people are getting on Snow’s back. For Christ sake, we have no idea how the next couple of hours are going to play out.

  342. 342 wow

Thanks Swan. Yeah TSN is completely wrong to lump the Isles in with the other two teams. Isles management has been upfront the whole time and have kept Guerin informed of what’s going on. Our proof is that Guerin has a no trade clause and has to clear any move that the Isles make. That’s something else that people aren’t understanding here. The fact that Guerin will only allow the Isles to trade him to 4 to 6 teams and on the east coast for one, handcuffs their options and two, hurts their negotiations because the demand is so low.

  343. 343 James

LOL TSN blew the load, said the Jokinen deal is done yet EJ says they arent quite done yet

  344. 344 b-ri

Trade…no trade…whatever…lets have jon sim go after avery with his skate happy gilmore style. He’ll get suspended for 50 games or so, but we don’t really want him playing anyway

  345. 345 Kyle

Bruins trade Nokelainen to the Ducks….Save me from getting bashed anymore in the 20 minutes ive been awake for but I think hes gonna be a great fit in Anaheim

  346. 346 nystrom23

Cross Boston off any destination for our D-man

  347. 347 Cody

    (342) Seriously. It’s like a professor grading a term paper that a student is still writing.

  348. 348 James

    Montador to Buffalo for Nokalinen

  349. 349 isles316

    Jokinen to Calgary is official

  350. 350 AZS

I know this is an exciting day and people are letting themselve get caught up - which is all in good fun, but I think some people might be over estimating what we might be able to get back in trades.

Our best trading assests are the young players (and our upcoming picks) that won’t be dealt. Weight was the next highest chip and he’s hurt. Even Guerin and Witt aren’t all that anymore.

Reality is the Islanders are a last place team - the players are the reason they’re in last. I can’t believe Snow got a #1 for Campoli. Lets just see what happens before we kill anyone, and lets remember what he’s trying to trade …seems a lot of people are expecting 1st rounders coming back or something like that and I think you’re setting yourself up for dissapointment

  351. 351 nystrom23

lombardi is quick he ll fit in nice in phoenix

  352. 352 ken

i’ll take guerin over satan anyday, espeically in the playoffs.

  353. 353 Lance79

I thought it was bad news too when I heard Satan cleared b/c yes he makes less than Billy and was available for free… until you realize that his numbers were in spite of playing with the top two scorers in the entire league; still if teams don’t want to take a cheap goal scorer either Satan has been really underwhelming or we’re not going to get anything of substance back for Billy

  354. 354 NYC Matt

    Great trade by the Coyotes

  355. 355 James

that is a real good deal for PHX

  356. 356 Joe

According to Andy Strickland at HockeyBuzz, Islanders are telling Guerin that there will be a trade.

  357. 357 IslesFanInBkNY

    Calgary got fleeced…

  358. 358 Rangers suck

Only the Islanders can fawk this up and it looks like they will, pathetic

  359. 359 Don Barzini

    My thoughts exactly, Nystrom23.

    Good job Coyotes.

  360. 360 admin

updated with - shocking - no news! and also a suggestion…CB

  361. 361 mm30

dead on AZS—I think it would nice to pick up a prospect for the fans to have a face to root for…even a marginal guy like a Goglioski would be appreciated insted of just acquiring mid round faceless picks…now if we can get any 1st rounders(dont see it) or 2nd rounders (possible) then i think we’d be happy.

  362. 362 NYC Matt

    Rangers Suck,

What exactly did the Isles “Fawk up”

They have a 38 year old forward in a contract year….. what do you think you are going to get for him?

A 2nd rounder is a victory and anything better than that is an amazing job by Snow.

  363. 363 Josh

I think Montreal would be a fantastic fit for Guerin at this point.

  364. 364 Johnny Islander

lol @ Campoli and his 16 minutes last night for Ott. Gordon told him “it isn’t always greener on the other side”

  365. 365 isles316

Jaffe, if you are reading the blog while on TV give us a waive.

  366. 366 beatlebailey

it does make that campoli trade look really good right now….if we could only trade that tortoise on skates hunter!

  367. 367 MikeD

Campoli also had 4 assists in his first 5 games with Ottawa.

  368. 368 James

    Bill Clement rocks lol

Yup and Pronger is staying with the Ducks it appears

  369. 369 ken

I like the market so far for dman. Witt is better then Leopold and Montador. Martinek is better then Montador, I dont know about leopold.

  370. 370 Fred Flash

If they don’t make a trade and have to keep Guerin Snow should resign!!

  371. 371 James

lol Hunter is a rare find, he is gritty and exactly what this team needs

I hope guys like Hunter and Park stay

  372. 372 AZS

lol beatle…like the guy, but he’s the slowest man on skates

  373. 373 Larry Ziegler

Andy Strickland said Guerin informed him he will be traded soon, Cant compare a soft Satan to a gritty player like Guerin. Guerin brings a ton more to the table than just goals, Satan doesn’t

  374. 374 NYC Matt

    Hunter skates like Bambi

  375. 375 TIM

what a dumb statement he should resign good one

  376. 376 James

    great point Larry

  377. 377 7th Woman

Jaffe sounds like he’s getting sick. And Campoli is doing very nicely in Ottawa. I’m very glad for him.

  378. 378 Maydog

Chris, you’re losing some crediblity and sounding like Eklund did during the lockout with these “Calm down and go watch Miracle” posts.

  379. 379 Swan

Great trade for Cal, imo. Calgary is getting to a win now mode with Iginla not getting any younger. And Sutter clearly felt that his team was not at the SJ/Det level. Jokinen will def help them. Jerome, Cammillari, now Olle. The will be driving to the net consistently and with size.

Lombardi is an asset but expendable. They have a lot of stud dmen (e.g., Regher).

  380. 380 The Real Vukota

And Campoli is a -2 with those 4 points. It’s the play in his own zone that makes Campoli a liability. We all know he could put up some points. The way he plays D he would have to put up Bobby Orr numbers to offset how bad he is in his own end.

  381. 381 Bobby

    Flames overpaid for Jokinen….

    Calgary Flames get:
    - C Olli Jokinen
    Phoenix Coyotes get:
    - C Matthew Lombardi
    - RW Brandon Prust
    - 1st round pick

  382. 382 kevin fitz

GREAT trade for Phoenix. GREAT trade.

  383. 383 nystrom23

Chris Neil is headed to SJ if he doesnt get an extension Ottawa has a trade lined up for him

  384. 384 James

and McAmmond has like 6 points since he has been here doesnt he?

  385. 385 Bobby

Except Bobby Orr had a ridiculous plus/minus

  386. 386 TM

The only trades that would really matter are the Coliseum for the Lighthouse project or Hempstead for Queens/Brooklyn. Personally, I’d like to see Snow traded for Lamoriello, Wang traded for someone who cares about hockey not just real estate and all NYI scouts traded for D Conte. But none of that will happen today.

  387. 387 The Real Vukota

I don’t know about 6. Maybe 3. He does have 2 goals already

  388. 388 nightfly

AZS - bein’ slow didn’t hurt John LeClair all that much. Not saying Hunter’s in his class, but there it is.

  389. 389 Bobby

Our friend Petteri Nikolainen has a new home …Anaheim….for Steve Montador

  390. 390 NYC Matt

Snow just sold our Zamboni, Skate Sharpener and our bus.

“this nickel used to be a quarter”

  391. 391 mm30

    NY not a hockey market? F U ray ferraro…

  392. 392 Mike

Hmm….this one worked out for us right?

New York Islanders traded Olli Jokien and Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.

8 years later, jokinen is getting flipped for 2 young players and a 1st rnd pick, luongo is a perennial all star, and the islanders are in dead last with a 15 yr contract franchise goalie who has perennial knee injuries…

  393. 393 James

Geez would you guys lay off Snow, damn I hope even more he gets a great deal to shut you all up

  394. 394 nightfly

Bobby - great point. Calgary probably overpaid for Leopold too. They are definitely paying a premium to try to get back to the Finals.

  395. 395 DPS

Look on the brightside Mike, no matter what we do today it cant be as bad as that.

  396. 396 James

well Mike that was a bonehead Milbury trade

  397. 397 AZS

Fair enough nightfly …and I promise that if Hunter has a career even closely resembling LeClair’s we’ll all be happy …my main issue with hunter is that he doesn’t use his body to drive the puck to the net which was either result in a call or force the D to yank you down …he’s always going wide and letting a weak wrister go …but anyways …back to TRADEWATCH’09

  398. 398 isles72

jokinen playing in an actual hockey crazed city is going to light a fire under his , y’know

  399. 399 Don Barzini

Mike #393, Thanks For The Punch In The Stomach.

  400. 400 Johnny Islander

Exactly Vukota, If OTT valued those 4 points in 5 games so dearly, he’d be playing more than 16 minutes.

  401. 401 Cody

    (394) Honestly, Snow could trade Jon Sim for Ovechkin and Islander fans would find some way to complain about it.

  402. 402 Jimmy B

    Bad trade for Calgary

Cammaleri definitely hits the UFA market

  403. 403 Steve K.

not like anyone doesnt know… but ive read elsewhere that the isles told guerin that their trade is imminent.

  404. 404 James

    LOL Vukota

hey yea and Ovie hurt his foot, that brings down his trade value

  405. 405 The Express

    Matt NYC (391)

LOL. I would trade Sim for a soda….as long as it’s none of that stinkin’ root beer.

  406. 406 KP

mm30 (#392) - I think what Chicken Parm was trying to say was that he hasn’t played in an intense hockey environment. Ray remembers 1993, when Rolli Polli Olli was here, you were lucky to get 5,000 in the building.

  407. 407 mrlbem

Back in the 70’s (showing my age) on Saturday Night Live, there was a running joke about the interminably, long drawn out illness and death of Spain’s long time president, Francisco Franco. Every week, on weekend update, Chevy Chase would announce that Generalismo Francisco Franco is still dead. Kind of reminds me of Guerin’s situation. He’s still being traded.

  408. 408 Ryan

Garth Snow sucks because he’s going to get the real value for a 38 year old who just doesn’t play like he used to…geeez the nerve of him

  409. 409 nieve_fan

Yes include me guys! I agree that Wang is an awesome owner. The Billy G trade fell though not because of snow but because of the “other team.” The Ted vs Garth riff was Ted’s fault. Scott vs the vets? The vets fault of course. TSN doesnt know anything! We do since we are so savy. The rebuild is working great also and we actually do not want any possible good players. Oh and the lighthouse should be done next week

  410. 410 DanNOLA

Haha, NYC @ 391…Think we could trade for McCracken?

  411. 411 isles316

NHL Live has a guy in a Comrie jersey in the store in the background! First jersey of the day.

    Isles fans everywhere

  412. 412 The Real Vukota

Isles were in the conference finals in 1993

  413. 413 Sean

I would take Guerin for Alexi Yashin right now

  414. 414 Swan

Re Jokinen trade, 1st rnd pick is conditional. Usually in these trades, the best player wins the deal. Olle is likely better than Lombardi, Prust or the late 1st round. Calgary wins.

If Calgary gets back to the cup over the next 2 years, they won’t care about the assets they traded away.

  415. 415 Blizzard

Snow is getting a raw deal. Understnadably after dealing with DIlbury for so long Islander fans have suffered alot. But its gonna take a lot of work to undo what that tool has done. Lets not forget he signed Striet. And the Campoli trade. Its not his fault if Guerin has no trade value.

  416. 416 Bobby

I agree nightfly….has anyone heard anything about Hossa’a injury last night. It was pretty scary, he got carried off on a stretcher, went headfirst into the boards.

  417. 417 John

Looks like Garth is going to have to break out the K-Y jelly to get something done, for all the pre-greasing he’s done… it sure isn’t working.

  418. 418 Jimmy B

A/p Andy Strickland–Guerin trade to be announced within hour

  419. 419 admin

updated with how Montador deal may affect NYI…CB

  420. 420 James

Again the deal for Guerin wasnt in Snow’s hands, he did have a deal on the table when he pulled guerin, but the other team didnt get the things done they needed to to get the trade done.

  421. 421 Nyles

Trade Garth for some broken sticks!

  422. 422 The Real Vukota

I saw Fritz and thought they called him up. CB please use a different word next time. :)

  423. 423 James

Can we trade Nyles for a Rangers blogger to be named later? LOL

  424. 424 the bomber

mm30 sticking up for the luongo trade??

    is this you mad mike??

the mm stands for mike milbury and the 30 stands for the average place your teams finished in??

    welcome to the board…

  425. 425 Willis

Hi all, I’m here now too. (So it can now start…LOL). CB - Doesn’t matter to me if you’re not first to break news today, I have no doubt that with everyone here’s help we’ll all hear about everything that’s put in every site out there!

  426. 426 TOM

Did we get Randy Robitaille, D Van Impe or Kip Miller yet?

  427. 427 Don Barzini

I was making a point Chris.

You don’t see me hanging around here knocking people.

    Things were getting kinda crazy.

  428. 428 Pete M

Wow, a lot of hating on Jokinen on TSN. Apparently he’s a well known locker room cancer.

  429. 429 Pablo Lopez

    Satan -v- Guerin

    CB

Sorry if I am coming in late, but Gerin is definitely worth more than Satan. Not because of age or talent. But Guerin is a rental with Satan you have to pay him for next year I believe.

  430. 430 The Real Vukota

    Beatle LMFAO!!!!

  431. 431 James

Jokinen has gone 754 regular season games without a playoff appearance

    that is an NHL record

  432. 432 James

NHL record that should say lol

  433. 433 Tom

Are we sure today to deadline day? there’s more trades in August.

  434. 434 Rangers suck

An hour and 40 to go and Billy’s still an Islander, good going WangerSnow

  435. 435 beatlebailey

apologies for the bodily function and Kvasha refernce - it wont happen again
    :-)

  436. 436 admin

Listen, folks. I know nothing’s going on right now with the NYI. But if you want to go back and forth on who’s a good fan or not, who’s negative or not and who’s wrong or not, we can call it a day. Talk NHL…CB

  437. 437 Jeff

Radical idea: Keep Guerin and Weight, trade Snow and Gordon.

  438. 438 Matt Brosseau

Tom, hey, Kip Miller had two goals in the Toronto series…including the first game-tying goal in the Game 4 epic.

  439. 439 isles316

Just reported Bill Guerin trade is dead on NHL live.

  440. 440 Ryan

Guerin deal dead as per Pierre Lebrun

  441. 441 DPS

NHL net reporting Garth blew the first deal asking too much. On to plan B

  442. 442 Mike

I think our friends in manhatten could use martinek and guerin! bring me prucha!

  443. 443 James

    you guys keep forgetting something

All of the Isles deals were going to be with teams, that need to clear cap space first. So the Isles have to wait it out for those teams to work out deals too

Original deal for Guerin is dead now, but that could have been sometime ago and Snow is on to something else

  444. 444 Jon Mac

Can we please stop all the negative conversation. It is really ruining this blog. Sorry Chris!

  445. 445 isles3113

i hope he doesn’t know what he’s talking about… something has to happen… come on garth, im pullin for something

  446. 446 Cody

Watching the TSN broadcast is Stockholm Syndroming me into cheering for Canada at the next Olympics.

Still don’t understand the massive appeal of curling as a sport.

  447. 447 John

at this point Garth needs to move Guerin for even a 6th rounder. As for the Joikinen to Calgary move… the guys on TSN have referred to him as a cancer in the locker room. I don’t really recall his time in New York… pre info age explosion like today’s blogs etc etc. Was he that bad?

  448. 448 JT

TSN repeating Pittsburgh should get Guerin.

  449. 449 John

TSN prattling on about Guerin being a fit in Pittsburgh

  450. 450 derek

Good to hear that the Montador deal nixes a potential Marty deal. This Trade Deadline Day will result in only 1 deal for our NYI.

  451. 451 Matt Brosseau

    Recchi to Boston per TSN.

  452. 452 Butchy

Guys please be respectful, it would be awfully lame to have CB pull the chat because of stupidity. Appreciate what Chris is doing please, thank you.

  453. 453 Tim

    Recchi to Bost

  454. 454 JT

TB trades Recchi to Bruins. No word yet on what the Bs send back to TB. Seems to me that Guerin would have been a better fit for the Bs.

  455. 455 Chris TMC

Its so sad how many want to see a trade just for the sake of making one. You want top dollar for every player who isnt Okposo or Bailey, but if the Isles hold firm asking for good offers that is wrong? There is nothing that would make everyone happy in a situation like that.

  456. 456 7th Woman

never underestimate garth snow’s ability to surprise.

  457. 457 Tim

    Guerin to Pitt being discussed.

  458. 458 Pat

Hey CB, If your laptop goes on the Fritz, we will have to bring in “The Wrecker” to take care of it !! :)

Nice job today providing us desk-bound fans with a place to vent.

I am sure that Garth will get something done……just wants to torture us for another two hours……

Just hope he is a good poker player.

    Pat

  459. 459 Captain Crunch

Is it just me, or does anyone else here think Snow pulled Guerin from the lineup Sat & Mon just to create a buzz about an impending trade, hoping to start a bidding war? Ha! No one cared.

  460. 460 Steve K.

recchi just went to boston, as of now tampa’s return is tba. this should get the ball rolling on guerin.

  461. 461 Daniel

I wonder why they went with Recchi over Guerin. About an hour and a half left and still no news, this is making me a little stressed.

  462. 462 blitz

That leaves PHI, MON, BUF, FL, PIT for BG.

  463. 463 John

    Recchi to Boston

  464. 464 Cody

TSN announced Guerin and Pittsburgh is heating up.

The fact they announced it on air makes it seem legit. I’m predicting a 2nd, B-Minus Prospect and perhaps a salary dump (Cooke?)

  465. 465 trippstar

New comment rule: RATIONAL THOUGHTS ONLY

  466. 466 the1gwiz

Too bad about Boston picking up both their D-man and Recchi. Could have been a nice destination for some of the Isles’ vets, especially with Gordon so familiar with kids in their system for a possible return. Oh well.

  467. 467 Swan

Recchi has had a very good season and is a proven draft day pickeup and be meaningful in helping a team win a Stanley Cup (e.g., Carolina with Lavy). Better pickup for a Cup-contending team than Guerin, imo.

  468. 468 DC

Yeah, TSN is not saying Guerin trade dead. Perhaps the original dance partner is out, but according to TSN, the Pens are interested.

  469. 469 The Real Vukota

Guerin for Godard and a 2nd???

  470. 470 James

As long as its not for Satan Cody and I am good LOL

  471. 471 Cruicky

I am starting to feel very sorry for the Islanders Vets. All of them. During this rebuilding process, it must have been a crazy year for a lot of them. What a cluster…..

  472. 472 The Real Vukota

Feel sorry for them???? Pay me 4 million dollars a year and I’ll feel sorry for them as well.

  473. 473 Walygz

Looks like the original deal for Guerin(assuming with Washington) was officially pulled off the table. I’d still like to think that Bill will find a new home, and I wish him the best of luck.

  474. 474 Chris M

Where’s Montreal in all of this? I thought they were supposed to be a big player? Any chance of a package to bring Higgins back?

  475. 475 James

Gordon was very very smart for letting the kids play and get used to the system

The Isles have played much better of late. Just think of next year, with these young players, 10 draft picks at least, maybe another young prospect or two and 26 million in cap space next year. You never know.

  476. 476 mm30

I like Lashoff but I dont think I would’ve thrown in a 2nd to get him.

  477. 477 isles316

Tampa got two prospects for Recchi and a 2010 2nd round pick.

  478. 478 Rangers suck

Guerin to……….. stay an Islander, booooooo WangerSnowie

  479. 479 Steve K.

    (474) you are correct. i dont feel bad for one of them, they are millionaires in a time when everyone is losing their jobs.

  480. 480 Mario

Boston gave up 2 players to the bolts for mark Recchi and a 2nd rounder

  481. 481 Matt

This is getting scary! Hope we don’t retain our captain!

  482. 482 wow

Nice, I just found out we got a 1st round pick for Campoli! That’s a great deal, way to go Garth! I’m not being sarcastic, this is a great deal!

  483. 483 Mike

I think Snow should just trade Guerin for a 2nd rounder and decent prospect and call it a day.

  484. 484 Chris M

    Dominic Moore to Blackhawks.

  485. 485 derek

Metal Chick #457, Thank you. At least someone gets it. If Snow doesn’t feel he’s getting a good return, why make the trade. Let’s say Garth trades Witt for only a 3rd rounder, what good would that really do for this team?? Let’s put things into perspective here. If GM’s aren’t claiming a proven 30 goal scorer off waivers, good luck getting a good return for a 38 year old.

  486. 486 Joe

    Damn Garth, do something already!

  487. 487 Smytty94

    Would have loved Lashoff! Damn!

  488. 488 Rich

You gotta trade Guerin at this point. Even if what we are getting in return has declined since the weekend. Having Guerin in our lineup = better chance to steal a few games = worse of a chance at #1 overall pick.

  489. 489 Macch

Seriously I would have tooken Lashoff for Guerin straight up… Cant believe what the B’s gave up for Recchi… Come on Garth wake up

  490. 490 Jimmy Sparx

My question for all of the sarcastic and negative people here is, what are you looking for Snow to do? Honestly!!!! The only way you are going to see any names that matter coming to the Islanders is if Snow gives up one of the kids and that will not happen. Nothing major is going to happen. Also, I’d like see a prospect rather than a pick for Guerin.

  491. 491 RobsIsles

Good job Isles. Way to treat your fans. Almost 2 hours gone and wat have we done… NOTHING. Here’s a trade for ya.. Scott Gordon and Garth Snow for a bag of pucks. Any comments?

  492. 492 The Real Vukota

Satan hasn’t scored 30 goals in years

  493. 493 JT

CB, any idea how Gordon felt about the two players TB got for Recchi?

  494. 494 Cruicky

30 goal scorers do not get placed on waviers. Guys that may have scored 30 in a previous year, might go on waviers. Not one that is preforming like a 30 goal scorer.

  495. 495 Mikey

No doubt Garth wanted to dance with the Bruins, but Recchi is a better fit for them. He is a left-handed shot, can play both wings, and is a better playoff performer than Guerin. He’s also having a better season than Billy. Recchi is a better option for the Bruins, so I can’t blame Snow for not pulling off a deal with them.

  496. 496 Carmine

Recchi is easier to move in this case because of his 1.75 mill contract compared to Guerin’s 4.5 mill

  497. 497 Alex Kinkead

Snow is getting me nervous. Come ON

  498. 498 Mario

I would have loved to have the deal TB got for Recchi. Guerin for Lashoff.

  499. 499 James

It is so easy to take that black and white look at it and say Oh no deal is done yet, blame Snow

It is WAY more complicated then that, sadly some on here dont realize that and no matter how many times you say it, they never will.

  500. 500 The Express

    (493)

Yeah, I got one but CB doesn’t want us stomping on posters.

  501. 501 Blizzard

    Guerin deal coming soon….fourth period

  502. 502 Nyles

    Uh oohhh…….

  503. 503 stopthepain

All of you guys who said a “deal was in place for Guerin” must admit you were wrong if he is not traded (and thus, pulling Guerin was the wrong move). By definition, if there is no deal, there could never have been something “in place.” Saying the other team had to clear cap space is 1. an assumption on your part and 2. means a deal was not “in place” because the other team still had something to do. That’s it for the negative part…
That being said, Snow has been fine so far. It’s better long term if Snow gets the reputation of being a stingy gm with the trades, and yes, the Streit signing was probably the best one in the NHL this past off season. Now let’s all pray Garth and the scouts can draft well.

  504. 504 trippstar

yeah heres a comment: relax, this is a rebuilding team, if the GM is being held up the deal shouldn’t get done. A trade is supposed to be fair for both teams. I feel like I am listening to WFAN and someone wants to trade Louis Castillo for Albert Puljos.

  505. 505 Justin Marques

This is definitely getting frustrating. However, I don’t think I will critique Snow just yet. There is still 1 hour and 15 minutes left before the time expires, and buyers become more desperate as the clock winds down. I still have faith that he can rob a desperate buyer as the clock expires, we will see though. Very surprising is the quiet Ranger and Montreal front…hmmm

  506. 506 Cody

If Snow trades Guerin early, it’s Zhitnik all over again and he’s an impatient GM.

If Snow has the audacity to not trade Guerin early, well, read the previous 500+ posts.

    Poor Garth can’t win. :(

  507. 507 Schultz39

I agree with an earlier post, even if we trade away Guerin for a 3rd rounder only, it gives us a better chance to get the first pick.

  508. 508 Rangers suck

Was there EVER a Guerin trade? I’m starting to doubt there was ever a deal, WangerSnowie just pulled him so he wouldn’t get hurt to try and deal him which they apparently can’t pull off.

Can’t wait for those stellar first round picks by these two idiots. I can already see Wanger trading the top pick for a used Bobby Orr jock.

  509. 509 Nyles

Actually there was a deal “in place” and the other team was going to trade for BG untill they found out that he had problem with Gordon and that the isles would get rid of him regardless. thus, his value decreased, and will continue to do so until the last minute. It is like a scalper at a hockey game, starts the price off high, and then sells for next to nothing at the last minute because the buyer knows he has to get rid of the ticket regardless.

  510. 510 Joey303

Do we not think Garth and his staff havent been on the phone all day? Of course they are. If he traded Guerin for a late 3rd and a 3rd in 2010, everyone would be complaining. Now, everyone is complaining that nothing is done. I havent seen the Rangers do anything today, the Canadiens, the Flyers, San Jose, Detroit………..see the point????

  511. 511 The Real Vukota

Yeah because I’m sure all the GM’s check out Logans blog before thinking about making a deal. Are you for real? I really hope not

  512. 512 valentino

The thing that bothers me most is that this is the 2nd year that we let assets walk off this team without converting them into something. I dont care if its a bag of pucks and some shoe laces, dont let assets walk !!!!

  513. 513 CT Isles Fan

Don’t forget about Washington. They haven’t done ANYTHING yet. I see Weight and Guerin going to Wash.

  514. 514 joe from bayside

you have got to be kidding me….how the hell does a 41yr old geezer get back this kind of return, but everyone blasts guerin saying hell get back a 3rd/4th rounder…2nd at best.
    guerin - 16g 20a 36pts
    recchi - 13g 32s 45pts
last time i checked guerin wasnt playing with stamkos, stlouis, lecavalier, malone, and the rest of their overpriced going nowhere anytime soon talent. absolutely ridiculous trade

tsn is reporting forseberg is mercifully announcing his retirement. anybody else getting sick and tired of all his glass foot problems, and the taking 90% of the yr off, coming back to the avs or flyers and then getting hurt in his 1st game back?

  515. 515 JT

TSN - Guerin to Pittsburgh rumor (again).

  516. 516 Ron

They are not going to get more than a 3rd if there lucky. All I know is we need atl and tampa to go on a 3 game streak us go on a 5 game loosing streak and then we will be good.

  517. 517 mike

losing begets frustration which begets a desire to lay blame…thus the tone of many posts…at the end of the day Guerin for a bag of pucks shouldn’t be done, even if he’s gone at the end of the year…the principal villian on the roster for most of us is gone now (Comrie), so I think most of us should be happy w/ draft day depth to go along w/ whichever slot our top pick falls on (1 or 2).

Anyone hear what the Isles got???

  538. 538 SW

Here is the deal with the Guerin trade that failed for all the people that think there wasn’t a deal to start with (it is from the ottawa sun) was linked to on spectors hockey site yesterday:

The Islanders are playing the waiting game with right winger Bill Guerin, but the talk is he could be packaged and dealt with injured centre Doug Weight. Sources say the Caps promised Isles GM Garth Snow they’d make a deal, but that was contingent on Washington being able to move centre Michael Nylander. Nylander has a no-movement clause and has not been willing to waive it.

It was even mentioned on TSN earlier that it was rumored Nylanders wife won’t let him wave his ntc.

Atleast it is all over now. Party on Garth!

  539. 539 NYC Matt

    TBA???????? come on!

  540. 540 AM

    I’m guessing Letang and a 3rd.

  541. 541 isles99

I think my computer is going to explode with all the tabs I have. Finally a deal done with Guerin, I wonder what it is going to be for. HOPEFULLY for a second. I wish Guerin all the best in Pitt, hopefully they can have a good run.

  555. 555 Steve K.

we got a conditional draft pick… start rooting for pitt!

  556. 556 Matt Brosseau

    5th round at the minimum
    PIT makes playoffs, 4th round
PIT wins first-round, 3rd round pick

  563. 563 Booten

  564. 564 John

Guess I’ll be rooting for the Pen’s at least for 1 round of playoffs. Gosh, I don’t like the Pens.

  565. 565 Doug

Garbage. Should have kept him for that.

  566. 566 19 Isle in NJ 22

WOW CB … you must be getting hits up the Wahzzoooo!! I’ve been trying to get on this page for about 10 mins … I saw TSN’s Live Trade window indicate Guerin to Pitt for TBA … I guess that is all we get for now…

Good luck the rest of the way … I’ll check in again from time to time before leaving work.

  567. 567 Mike from Philly

For a conditional draft pick!!!! 5 days in the making by our future hall of fame GM

  568. 568 derek

So we made a trade, no everyone can say how bad it was.

  569. 569 Klynch

should have never held him out of those 2 games, over played our hands.

  570. 570 Angelo

    What a terrible deal

  571. 571 Rob

    Pittsburgh Penguins get:
    - RW Bill Guerin
    New York Islanders get:

  572. 572 Seth

Is Mark Recchi THAT much better than Guerin?

  573. 573 AJ

thats a joke of a deal- u know the pens are gonna miss the playoffs now

  574. 574 nickystix

    thats a horrible deal

  575. 575 Steve S

Garth Snow should be ashamed of himself.

  576. 576 Ron, Lindenhurst NY

    horrible deal. just horrible.

  577. 577 Chris M

This will end up being a 4th round pick. Why Garth? Why? Very disappointed.

  578. 578 nystrom23

any news on the conditions of the pick?

  579. 579 DPS

Can we trade Snow for another back up goalie turned GM with absolutly no front office experience? Oh he is the only one? Too bad.

  580. 580 John

Looks like TSN is saying conditional draft pick (i.e. exactly what CB has been saying, a 3rd or 2nd rounder probably dependant on how far Pitt gets in the playoffs),

  581. 581 JKP in Halifax

Would have rather kept him than get a “maybe” 3rd round. Very meh.

  582. 582 Steve K.

there is obviously going to be a ton of commentary on this trade, but my initial reaction is we lost big time. snow took what he could get and it was NOTHING.

  583. 583 Justin Marques

Guerin is worth more in the line-up and mentoring the kids than he is for a 5th round draft pick that won’t pan out. Even if it becomes a third-round pick, I am quite unimpressed by the return. Recchi’s value cannot be that much higher than Guerin’s.

  584. 584 Mike

I’m usually pretty realistic on trade values of different players, but there is no way I can say anything positive about this deal. I’ve defended Snow over the years, but a conditional 3rd rounder that could end up being a 5th????? The Bolts just got Matt Lashoff for Mark Recchi. I’ve supported this organization since 1992 and, unfortunately, this is just the latest joke.

  585. 585 Obs

What a bad deal. Outside of dumping his salary and allowing to play more kids. a conditional 5 to 3rd round pick is a bad job. This was the big waiting game?

  586. 586 Cruicky

They dumped his salsry, that much is clear. Snow is going to have to make some deals in the summer to fill some holes, after the buyouts.

  587. 587 Joe G.

This is what happens when you hire your goalie as a GM.

  588. 588 AJ

this whole deal just makes us look stupid, holding him out of the lineups for a weak conditional pick

  589. 589 derek

Why are people so upset? We got our bag of pucks for him. Now lets go and trade the rest of the worthless Vets.

    Recchi wasn’t getting paid $4.5M.

  590. 590 Joe

Isles99, you didn’t have the Guerin to Pittsburgh, I did, get real.

  591. 591 Jimmy B

Recchi got the top prospect in boston and we get a fifth.

How does snow keep his job

  592. 592 sincityhockeyfan

wow horrible trade… rather see guerin stay and walk off for nothing… 5th rounder and could end up being a third if they make it to the second round….. should have been a third atleast with the possiblity to move up to a second ect if they advance in the playoffss booo booo
    boo we got hosed lmao

  593. 593 Cody

Guerin’s value dropped, especially with the condition that there were only a handful of teams he wanted to go to.

I don’t think Garth is done.

  594. 594 STIC

Another HORRENDOUS deal by Snow. He’s turning into the Isiah Thomas of Long Island…

  595. 595 the bomber

they wont win a round, so we got him for a 4th rounder. embarrassing - FOR HIM.

i wonder what that deal was a week ago?? why exactly was anyone worried about him getting hurt.

i really think for that we shoulda kept him

  596. 596 AM

Why is everyone ripping on Snow?? You’d be complaining if he didn’t make a deal and took Guerin back and now your complaining that he pulled the trigger.

Obviously his other deal fell through. Nothing you can do about that until we hear details.

  597. 597 Dan

Garth you are an idiot. Wait till 2.50 and wait to see if u get a last min panic offer. If not just keep him. A 3rd or 4th rounder does nothing.

  598. 598 Ed J

prob a 4th if pitts dont make playoffs ( unlikely )
    3rd for 1st & 2nd rd wins
    2nd for conf finals
say add a 4th rd if they get to cup something like that prob

  599. 599 CT Isles Fan

he should have gotten a third, then a second if they advance in the playoffs

  600. 600 Hockey1919

I find it hard to believe that you would sit a player in hopes of getting a fifth round pick. The fifth rounder is Tampa Bay’s, but each subsequent pick is Pittsburgh’s so if they make the playoffs they are later in each of the rounds.

Wonder if Snow has removed GMGM from his rolodex if it is true that there was a deal in place with the Caps that fell through. There was no way that Nylander was going to waive his NTC after agreeing to terms with Edmonton before signing with DC and then having is wife revoke the deal.

  601. 601 Aim

Sooo ask again why no free agents want to come to the NYI yeah right it is the NVMC This team is still a circus act you take a well respected veteran player that is captain of your team and pull from the lineup prior to a game. You then let this thing drag out for days and get back a conditional draft pick….again players do not want to play here because of the stupid was this team conducts business. What a joke

  602. 602 Brian G

Big Deal - Snow had to wait 4 days for a conditional pick…solid work

  603. 603 Obs

Looks like Islanderspointblank is blowing up. Can’t even get in to read replies without getting the “unable to connect or error 500″ problem. That is the only good thing out of this deal. Congrats CB

  604. 604 bcarey

not pleased with this trade. unless garth can package the pick with a second and the SJ first rounder to move up into the mid-first, this is a BAD trade. i think it is pretty clear that guerin wanted off LI for garth to take this offer. brutal.

  605. 605 ed

Really? Is anyone shocked? We have a GM that has/had no training at all. Snow is definitely in over his head. I just don’t understand how the Islanders do not have a qualified GM. Thankfully Neil Smith was around to draft Okposo albeit it was only for one month.

  606. 606 Joe

Snow is the worst GM ever, a conditional pick for Billy Guerin, if were lucky we will get a 4th rounder.

This is everything that is wrong with this franchise.

  607. 607 Matthew Boily

I can’t believe we only got a conditional draft pick….Anyone want weight, martinek?

  608. 608 Keith

What a horrible trade how can we only get a 5th round pick is garth that clueless. A player 3 years older gets two prospects and we trade our captain and get a 5th round pick. Keep up the good work Garth lol

  609. 609 NYC Matt

    Is Snow serious? 5th ROUNDER?????????????????????

  610. 610 The Real Vukota

    Only in Islander country

  611. 611 Kevin Schultz

Oh noes! Bill Guerin broke the internetz!

  612. 612 Bridgeport fan

I can care less about the Guerin deal he had to go and he`s gone.
I am more pissed about the fact that the Isles could have traded for a kid like lashoff by giving up a mid to late second.

  613. 613 Lee

whats so bad about a conditional pick for an aging forward?

we got something…just gotta draft well that’s all

  614. 614 Spud 31

    Give back my Captain!

  615. 615 Aim

oh and peter zezel on the fan 590 just said any player that would get traded to the NYI would be very unhappy, and the BG is now the happiest man in hockey for getting out of there…ouch this is how we are looked at

  616. 616 NYICHAMP39

Once again the Isles make the stupidest move on earth. A 5th rounder????? I would have rather kept him!!

There is no chance that the pick will move up to a third rounder given the fact that the pens just arent that good this year!!

    Terrible trade. Absolutely terrible.

  617. 617 Darryl in Florida

Charles Wang has just traded Garth Snow for a 2012 7th-round pick

  618. 618 Mike

For that little, we should’ve just kept him. That’s no way to treat Guerin, our captain and a very well-respected player throughout the league. This, more than Gordon, will affect our ability to attract quality free agents, in my opinion.

  619. 619 Read This

Good for Bill Guerin, landing in a very good situation in Pittsburgh. Good for the Penguins to get such a solid guy. He is pretty much what they have needed all year. He is not Marian Hossa, who gave them such a lift last year. But he is a very classy guy with some game left (unlike Miroslav Satan).

Don’t be so quick to dismiss Greg Logan’s story about the fissure between captain and coach on the Islanders. It’s easy to say “Oh, every team has people who aren’t happy.” True, but this was different. Trust me on this, Greg has been around franchises, good and bad, for a long time. He knows when it’s the usual last-place discontent and he knows when it’s a genuine legitimate story. This was a genuine, legitimate story. If Bill Guerin gets alienated, it is worth raising eyebrows.

  620. 620 Chris TMC

The server is ready to crash, but somehow Isles fans are still able to complain that a trade was made. But if the trade wasnt made, what do you think those same fans would do?

  621. 621 Joe

    618- I wish! What a disgrace!

  622. 622 Jon

    WHAT. WE GOT NOTHING!

  623. 623 Joe G.

This is the problem and it starts with Wang. You want to rebuild? fine but you better have some experienced people running things. (Bowman, Quinn etc.) what a joke!

  624. 624 bcarey

Ed J where are you getting the 2nd if they make the conference finals?

  625. 625 nystrom23

it becomes a third rounder if pitt makes the 2nd of playoffs

  626. 626 Ryan

I have a feeling that Guerin was on his way to Boston and that was the deal that died and it died because Garth wouldn’t give up a second round pick

  627. 627 STIC

    Snow’s only worth an 8th rounder….

  628. 628 mike

Lol…no wonder the site crashed for a bit…everyone howling at the moon!

I’d say good job getting a first rounder for a disgruntled Campoli…good job getting rid of Comrie for no contract…poor job leveraging Guerin and leaving the fan base out to dry during the Guerin transaction (since Sat). Overall C+ so far (conditional pick too low for Guerin w/ what Boston gave up for Recchi). Perhaps Garth has one more trade to go, but I’m not feeling it.

  629. 629 Daniel

Wow. That is all I can say. This is almost embarrassing. The best we can make out with is a 3rd round pick? I do have a question though, what happens if Pitt gets to the second round? Does it go down to a second or basically if Pitt goes on to win the cup we still only have a 3rd in return?

  630. 630 7th Woman

we got something when the alternative was NOTHING.

  631. 631 DPS

606 you are right on. Isles = laughing stock of sports yet again! Have some pride man. Just stand pat.

  632. 632 John

why all the hate for this deal. Snow keeps Guerin everyone whines because he walks at the end of the year… he trades him for less than you think he’s worth and Snow should be canned. Please. It’s unfortunate the original deal Snow had in place fell through. I think if we knew what that deal was then we would judge this last hour deal differently.

  633. 633 isles316

Awful job by Snow. Awful. 5th round pick if Pitt misses the playoffs, 4th round if they make it, 3rd rounder if they get out of the first round. Awful job by Snow here in my opinion.

  634. 634 Pat

    We are a joke

  635. 635 Chris TMC

BTS Derek King was more of a scorer than Billy G. Do you know what the Isles traded him for?

  636. 636 Kai

    Ridiculous. Simply ridiculous.

  637. 637 Dissolutioned Brian in VA

Snow is junk! Too hiliarious! Conditional pick??? Hope you guys are happy because Snow fed you the rebuilding kool-aid you guys like it apparently! Thanks CB this site is nice!
Another dissapointing move for my beloved franchise YAY!

  638. 638 JT

TSN - Guerin will play will Malkin or Crosby. Brings experience, leadership, grit, championship experience and offense. Great guy, especially in locker room. Typically would go for a second round pick. Different this year because of salary cap issues.

  639. 639 trippstar

I think it was a mercy deal for Guerin. Anyone who things we could have gotten better really just dont understand hockey operations. Keep dealing Garth, I have faith.

  640. 640 Mike

The Express (562): That’s what I was thinking! I would have kept him if that’s all Garth could get in return.

  641. 641 Steve K.

does anyone know what this trades implication is regarding our salary cap minimum? arent we dangerously close without both guerin and comrie?

  642. 642 Booten

wow really thought guerin was worth more than a 3rd at most…i mean with the standings being so tight and teams looking better than they have (florida, carolina) its not even close to guaranteed pitt makes it to the PLAYOFFS much less second round, and if that happens it’s still just a third? Pretty junky.

  643. 643 Read This

Chris TMC–Islander fans have EVERY right to complain. The team is in shambles and its future lies in the less than capable hands of Wang, Green Garth and the Alienator Minor League Coach. Yea, why complain genius?!

  644. 644 jay

    that was a terrible trade!!!!

  645. 645 kevin fitz

Why are people upset? There was no market for him.

  646. 646 SS

It’s as if Snowy begged Pitt to take him off his hands.

  647. 647 StevieL

Nice Blockbuster! It is like a garage sale, in the beginning you are all excited, put all your junk on the driveway and hope somebody picks it up. By the end of the day your junk is still sitting there. You do one of two things, lower your price and take whatever you can get or two, you just throw it out!Nobody wanted our junk! Can you say “overplayed your hand” Garth!

  648. 648 303Joe

Exactly what Aim in #602 said. This is a joke stupid move from the start that blew up in Garths face. Can’t wait to see how he defends this deal here you had a guy that waqs your captain that worked hard and wanted to be here. And you wanna know why this team sucks.

  649. 649 Patrick Flatleaver

I guess the trade for Recchi got my hopes up. It’s disappointing to see the Islanders not get a return that good for a younger player.

  650. 650 Joe

TMC- Id be happier about him staying, he literally was given away. Our leading scorer, GIVEN AWAY on deadline day. We at least shouldve had a second rounder.

  651. 651 mrlbem

Looks bad considering what TB got for Recchi. Even factoring in the 2nd round pick that TB threw in, that deal set the market and Snow looks like a Doofus in comparison. Again.

  652. 652 Potvinstyle33

Wow….I may be crazy but I am happy to get something for someone who was unlikely to re-sign here. Let’s hope for a 3rd rounder. To say we need to fire Garth is just ridiculous. Of course I would have loved more but what did we really anticipate getting here? We all just let our imaginations get the best of us.

  653. 653 Joe

No, it was Pittsburgh all along, there were some road bumps because Pittsburgh had second thoughts, but now with the deadline coming up, they made the right call to grab Billy for a good price. I know that’s what happened, I knew it was Pitt on Saturday. Go back, and see how I told you guys.

  654. 654 Lance

What did you all expect for Bill Guerin? He’s a free agent, and oh yeah, he was a free agent this past season and no team signed him except for the Islanders! If the Islanders don’t sign him, he wouldn’t even be in the league! Wake up people! and the comparisons to Recchi are crazy, he’s making half the money and performs ten times better in the playoffs, i.e. stanley cups

  655. 655 Danny22

Garth please quit.. please or at least go to GM school. Oh wait you just got taken to school by the Pens

  656. 656 Ed J

Something had to happen, I will blame the Rangers…..

Remember this on thurs night boys…..

Everyone should blame those goddam rangers!!!!!!

  657. 657 Joe in Massapequa

I wonder how ripped up BG’s knees were to get this one done? A 5th round pick? C’mon! What an absolute joke. I was all in favor of unloading the vets for picks and prospects but Snow cannot be serious.

  658. 658 DanNOLA

Recchi is more valuable than Guerin, plain and simple. And Tampa had to throw in a second in order to get players back. I wish that the pick we got for Guerin was higher, but you can’t compare the Recchi deal with Guerin.

  659. 659 John Tavares

Garth Snow really doesn’t know what he’s doing. Tampa dows better for 68 yr old Mark Recchi. We get robbed. What a disaster.

  660. 660 Atari8bit

I think Snow still has a soft spot for the ‘Burgh. And hey it may help knock the rag$ out of the playoffs! ;-)

  661. 661 Spartiarti - RVC

wish we could of got more with it. if you going to take conditional pick at least make it you get a first if they make the finals.

  662. 662 Eye on the island

I love everyone saying he should have gotten a 3rd. Don’t you think if it was there he would have????

Please provide so reasoning when you just throw out comments

  663. 663 Gone Billy Gone

Glad this fiasco is over with, Billy needed to go. He was nothing special, not even the best player on a last place team.

Makes sense that the Isles got squat for Billy since Pitt just put Satan on waivers.

I hope Snow can pull one out of his butt at the deadline and suprise everyone.

Go Islanders, kids play well, lose close games and finish in last place by 1 point please.

    Cheers

  664. 664 John Tavares

I want Garth Blow outta here by Friday

  665. 665 Pat

Chris Neil to Fla. would of loved his toughness.

  666. 666 NYC Matt

I just invited Garth Snow over for a game of poker tonight………… easy money

  667. 667 dalcy

Bill Guerin is old and was in the way

  668. 668 BrassBonanza

That is terrible. A 4th round pick for the captain???? Is this a joke? They should have just held onto him. What type of message does this send in the locker room; the captain can be shipped away for a bag of pucks??? Wow what a sad day

  669. 669 Ryan

well I’m officially going to stop reading the comments section for awhile….I can’t take all the whining and crying….These guys can do nothing right…I’ve stated my postion..CB I will still continue to read your blogs cause I love them, thanks for all the hard work

  670. 670 Joe

And we missed out on Neil..

  671. 671 Isles19

Guerin had a NTC and that the diffence … Is what it is… Need to move on.

  672. 672 Fist of Gillies

    well then.

    Go Pittsburgh!

  673. 673 Larry Ziegler

It says the captain wasn’t wanted

  674. 674 Jake from Albany

I’m gonna have to say this is one of the best trades ever from an Islander stand point

  675. 675 Aim

I have been saying it for months here!!! This team is looked at as the biggest joke in sports. Regardless of what we got back just the way this whole thing went down makes us keep looking like we are run by idiots

  676. 676 kevin fitz

Just because Pointblank readers thought he was worth a second round pick doesn’t mean 29 thought he was.

  677. 677 kevin fitz

29 other gms i meant to say

  678. 678 Steve

Snow might just be the worst GM in hockey.
But it is OK beacause he drank some beers with the fans last year.

What a joke this team is.

  679. 679 Don't Mind the Haters

I don’t think we can call the trade horrible, as we were not going to resign Billy G in the off season.

If we were to get something more than it’s a bonus.

As for the Recchi deal. May be Boston didn’t want Billy G. Or couldn’t afford him as Recchi’s salary is a quarter the amount Billy G makes.

  680. 680 JT

Let’s stop criticizing Snow. If he could have received more back for Guerin, he would have. Obviously, there was no bidding war. And there were only 8 trades so far today. Guerin doesn’t bring back a 1st or 2nd round pick in this kind of environment.

  681. 681 Obs

Giving the kids all the playing time they need and clearing cap space, all good things with this trade. Question is, who is going to sign with the Isles next season? How do we draw a top FA with this team.

  682. 682 joe from bayside

    from logan:
The Islanders get Tampa Bay’s fifth round pick from Pittsburgh for Bill Guerin. If the Penguins make the playofss, the Isles get the Penguins’ fourth-round pick. If the Pens win a round and Guerin plays at least 50 percent of the games, then, the Isles get Pitt’s third-round pick. That’s it.

thats it?? f***ing ridiculous! i stand by my previous comment of overpaying for recchi and teams basically spitting in not only snows face but guerins, telling him your worth jack! i cant believe 5 days of this crap only to wind up with crap…solid!

i hope pitt doesnt even make the playoffs now just so i can spit right back in their face….soooo disappointed

  683. 683 Don Barzini

Well I have to admit, the trade is pretty embarrassing.

  684. 684 blitz

Isles move salary and a player. Maybe, just maybe, Snow took a ‘lesser’ pick in lieu of taking back salary…

It is what it is. Makes me laugh when all Islanders country whined last year when Satan was not traded and walked away. The cry was ‘atleast get SOMETHING.’

    Now, it’s ‘you got that?’

    Unbelievable.

  685. 685 Justin Izzo

All of you complaining don’t understand the situation.

Snow had a deal (presumably a better one) in place for Guerin on Saturday with another team.

That deal fell through between Saturday and now.

Snow, who had made Guerin sit out two games before this point, had to get rid of his player who couldn’t have been happy that he had to sit.

    Pittsburgh takes advantage.

Maybe Snow making Guerin sit was premature, but it made the rest of this chain of events fall into place.

Of course this is all speculation, but it would make a hell of a lot of sense.

  686. 686 Harry

Would of kept Guerin for 20 more games….he has 16 goals this year and is 38, all this locker room stuff is overrated as far as trade value. We’ll survive without the 5 more goals he would of scored unhappily over the next 2 months.

  687. 687 Dan

I would have preferred to keep him…

  688. 688 joe

good move, guerin slowed our team anyway, hope somebody wants a injured weight, 1 more ex-oiler to go. go pittsburgh.

  689. 689 John

Total joke. Yet another PR disaster by this organization. They shot themselves in the foot over the weekend and screwed themselves. Brilliant!

  690. 690 Jisles

Once Garth blew the deal over the weekend you knew Guerins value went down, add in the Logan article and Guerin was there for the pickin. What a steal for a guy who has over 400 goals. Boy, garth blew this one, 5th rounder for Guerin terrible. but we all knew it so I am not surprised. Guerin will put up numbers playing with crosby.

  691. 691 Fist of Gillies

are people now announcing their temporary retirement from the comments section of a nyi blog?

has human evolution really reached this point?

  692. 692 Chris

I dont understand the league. I cant figure how 90 year old Mark Recchi draws more interest than Bill Guerin. And for that matter the bounty for the decrepid one is a young player and a 2nd round pick while we only get a 5th rounder for Guerin.

I wonder if the whole pulling Guerin out, mystery team backout screwed eve
