Loving lethbridge (1371): Guerin wasn't necessarily walking at the end of the year. Was he offered a contract extension? Did he turn it down? All I kept hearing was that he likes Long Island, his family does as well and he never wanted to be traded in the first place, only relenting to be moved after Garth continued to pester him about it. So, I don't think anyone can definitively say that Guerin was about to leave on July 1 for certain.

This "potential" third round pick right now is a fifth rounder. There are no guarantees that Pitt even makes the playoffs, much less wins a round and dresses Guerin for 50% of the games (of course, now I'm rooting for all of that to occur).

I just think that the Isles are going to need some vets up front next year and keeping your Captain was a good place to start. Especially when the return was a border-line useless fifth round pick.

Jethro (1370) - Guerin walked at the end of the season anyways, so getting potentially a 3rd round "bag of pucks" is not a bad thing. As for the salary floor, i believe the Isles still have a significant hit for our "friend" Yashin

There seems to be a lot of people defending this Guerin trade and slamming people for questioning the deal. Let me tell you all why this was a bad deal:

For starters, Bill Guerin is not Alex Ovechkin, but he's also not Jon Sim. This is a guy who was the captain of the team, a great example to younger guys of how to conduct yourself as a professional player and how to play the game the right way. Oh, and by the way, he happened to be the second leading scorer and the top scoring forward on the team at the time of the trade.

Everything Bill Guerin brought to the table for this team, on the ice and off, is worth far more than a fifth round pick (I know it can escalate to a third, but a lot has to happen for that to happen and nobody can be sure it will. So the trade was for a fifth, not a third).

Snow blew it with this move. I don't understand where its written in stone that because he's 38 he had to be traded? Snow should have done a cost-benefit analysis on dealing Guerin as opposed to keeping him and re-signing him for at least another year. I submit that a re-signed Guerin is worth far more to this team, this year as well as next, than a fifth round pick.

Here's a news flash for everyone who thinks this was a good deal: whether you like it or not, the Islanders MUST have veterans on this team next season. There is an NHL salary cap floor to be concerned with, as well as the fact that the Islanders prospect pool just isn't that deep, certainly not deep enough to ice an entire NHL squad. By peddling Guerin off for the equivalent of a bag of pucks, you've peddled off your team captain for nothing. Good luck getting any quality veterans in here over the summer.

Bottom line: bad trade. Should have held onto Guerin if the compensation wasn't at LEAST at guaranteed second. If Kyle McLaren can bring back a sixth, how does Guerin only bring back a fifth? If Snow had handled this better, he wouldn't have been forced to move Guerin.

pete guerin is an ufa.

also all he was doing was taking valuable ice time away from players we need to develop-if guerin isnt pulled out of the last 2 games, we do not get a glimpse of jonesu, who would you rather seeing playing now?

To me Guerin is more valuble to this young team and happy to be here than a 5th round pick. He is under contract for next year and happy to be here. This could have been next years trade. Garth didn't have to move him trade for the sake of a trade.

Why is Sim always on waivers?

No one needed any isles players that badly added to their roster... we are a bad team for a reason... if we had great players to offer we woudlnt be at the bottom of the league... unless we offered a redic package we woulda got nothing... all out players woulda got 14th round picks (being sarcastic)

It is almost embarrassing reading some of these posts.

I hate cutting up other fans, but some of you have no clue.

Sure it would have been great to get more for Billy. But if you look at the day as a whole, not many people overpaid for players today.

Things didn't get crazy this year like years passed.

Billy is 38 years old free agent. He is not a superstar.

The only teams that overpaid today was probably the Rangers for Morris, and Philly losing Lupul.

Garth is doing just fine.

I just wish people would think before they make comments.

If the removal of Guerin helps us lose games then we win the trade.

If anyone watched the interview with Snow post-game would realize that the smug S.O.B. is not worthy of the position.
