EVENT NOTES: PB Night III? Some Thank Yous
Silli at D & B’s tonight…Lighthouse March 26

by Chris Botta on March 12th, 2009 at 8:51 am

A series of event notes this morning…

PB Night III?: There’s a possibility of one final Point Blank event this season, if you’re into it.

The plan would be to have it at an establishment near the Coliseum after the 2:00 pm home game against Philly on April 11. Instead of a game on TV, it would be more of a season recap/draft preview/look ahead co-hosted by me and Billy Jaffe.

There would be free beer and soda and wings for anyone wearing some kind of Islanders flair (Office Space reference). We could probably trick a great guest or two into stopping by. If you believe there would be interest, please let me know in Comments.

Thank You…to everyone who took part in Point Blank Night II. After a rocky start with 2 of the 3 TVs on the fritz during the pregame, it got fixed and I believe everyone had a good time. I know I did getting to meet so many of you.

Thanks especially to Roseanne and the staff at Gabrielle’s (led by Lorraine) for their incredible support of the night. The reason why a blogger is able to host an event of this calibre for 150 people, pure and simple, is because of Roseanne and the crew at Gabrielle’s. As I’ve written many times, if someone in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, anywhere can match what Gab’s does for us, I’d have an event once a month.

Thank you to Michael Picker and Paul Lancey of the Lighthouse Development Corp. for visiting with our group. Thank you to Justin Bourne and Brianna Gillies for their royal presence. Thanks again to Mr. Richard DiPietro for his support by coming to both events.

Thanks to Kelly for doing such a great job running the raffle. Thank you to The Jaff for getting on the phone with my hater neighbor Joe, who backed down like a major wuss when given the chance to say why he criticizes you in Comments. He won’t be doing that again. Now he thinks you’re A-ok.

Thanks Madji and Mark, even though Joao Sousa blew it off because he thought we wouldn’t get to hang. Thanks to my now longtime pals from Islandermania for coming by. Thanks to my new friends made during the evening. Thank you, everyone who came from near and far (New Jersey, Westchester, NYC, even Suffolk!) to fill the place.

Silli at Dave & Buster’s Tonight: If you’re in search of another viewing party, the Islanders are hosting one tonight at the Dave & Buster’s at The Source Mall in Westbury.

Mike Sillinger is the guest and the team will have all sorts of goodies. If you haven’t yet had the privilege, Sillinger is a fun person to watch a game with. Check it out if you have the time.

Lighthouse Night on March 26: The Lighthouse Development Corp. is hosting a Community Education Outreach on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 pm at the Long Island Marriott. If you go, tell them you heard about it from Point Blank.

We’re told scheduled guests include Charles Wang and Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi. The former is the man who has spent millions trying to keep this together. The latter is the man who insisted on and led County approval of - let’s do this slowly, for Town Supervisors and others just joining in -

NOT…A…COLISEUM…RENOVATION…BUT…DEVELOPMENT…OF…THE…ENTIRE…PROPERTY. (Or to use The Suozz’s phrase, The Hub).

Kate Murray hasn’t shown up at anything else, so you have to figure her presence at this one is a longshot.

Point Blank Night 3 interest? That, and everything else, in Comments. Live conversation during the road game returns tonight. Should have more later in the afternoon.

PB Night III sounds awesome! i’m in CB!

  2. avatar Jimmy Sparx says:

This may be PB III, but it’ll be my 1st PB. Count me in!!!!!

  3. avatar nightfly says:

PB 3 – sounds sweet! As I said in an earlier thread, there’s a goodly number of Isles fans at my rink in Jersey who could be coaxed.

  4. avatar Gary says:

I’m in. This sounds like fun. Hopefully the Rags will be eliminated by then as well. That would be nice.

  5. avatar mw147 says:

I enjoyed PB Night II very much.

This sounds like a great idea. I really like Billy Jaffe. It am sure it would be a fun day.

  6. avatar Izzy Franchise says:

You had me at Draft Preview.

  7. avatar Ryan says:

CB a PB Night III would be awesome, I haven’t been able to attend the other two due too work obligations and would love to meet you and some new Islander brethren, plus it would be awesome to get a chance to meet and chat with Billy Jaffe who, in my eyes, is one of the best analysts in the game. I’m going to this game and count me in for PB Night III!!!

  8. avatar stumpy32 says:

I am in for my first PB night. Should have been been there for the last to since I live in RVC, but I was out of town for work.

Any way we can guaranty Billy Jaffe wont leave us as a free agent any time soon? He is one of the best islanders signings over the last several years(!) and one of the best color guys in hockey.

    Give’m a DP’esque contract Wanger, 15 years!

  9. avatar Pat says:

I am going to the game, so just let us know where and I will be there.

  10. avatar JB says:

Sorry I couldn’t make it to PB II, but you can sure as hell count me in for PB III, wouldn’t miss it for the world!

  11. avatar Mark L says:

Chris, let me start off by saying thank you so much for mentioning mine and majdis friend this is the highlight of my week. I have been hysterically laughing all morning. You don’t know how much we appreciate it. PB night two was awesome, and I will definetly go if there is a third, maybe we can get Joao to go this time. Thanks again, we owe you one.

  12. avatar Mike says:

PB III sounds like a great idea. Hope to be there this time around.

  13. avatar Steve says:

PB III sounds good to me as well. I will be coming in from Staten Island, my bro lives in Wantagh. Side note-did we hear anything about the 3rd jersey being the standard uniform next season??? Really interested in that. Love those jerseys. Hate the ones they wear now.

  14. avatar mrlbem says:

PB III sounds good. You’re like a rock group that started out playing small theaters and now routinely sells out stadiums.

  15. avatar UIF says:

I’ll actually be on LI for the April 11 game, so I should be able to swing by PB III afterwards.

  16. Thanks CB for a great night on Tuesday. Thanks also to James, Kelly and 318J1 for great conversation and a good time (and for watching my seat taboot).

I will definitely be interested in a PB Night III. Whether or not I can make it that day is another story. I hope so. CB, did you hear Jaff’s referenece during the broadcast on Tuesday? Very nice.

  17. avatar Ed J says:

    PB III would be awesome!!!!!

  18. avatar Swan says:

    A great idea. I’m there.

  19. avatar Chris TMC says:

I would definitely go for that- Im more of a beer chick than a wine chick, anyway. Besides, Id like to meet Jaffe- and Id tell him not to let MSG steal him for the Rags instead of covering us. Let them steal CJ instead! (ha- kidding lol)

  20. avatar thepolishprince says:

PB 3 would rock! I’m an accountant and will be missing the game being that it is 4 days before the filing deadline but I’d sure as heck try to hit PB 3 on the way home to Suffolk especially if the Jaffe will be there. IMO he’s one of the best color guys around.

  21. avatar Mike from Oceanside says:

Count me in for a PB III. Had a BLAST at the last one. Just a short note on Gabrielle’s…Going to there for dinner with my wife tomorrow night to support them for supporting PB Night II (besides the fact I found the food to be delicious).

  22. avatar DyingofDeath says:

I would be into a PB & J, or a PB Night Part Tres as long as we can all agree to actually order drinks when standing at the bar, so that it does not take 20 minutes to get a beer :) . It was a little to crowded the other night, so a few of us had to duck out and head around the corner to something a little bit roomier than the European standard of 7″ of personal space. It is nice to see that so many people went down in support of the Isles, Botta, PB and most importantly the uber-generous Gabrielles! Do I smell “PB Night Part IV – Free Agent Fishing Trip”?

  23. avatar Larry says:

I couldn’t make it to pb1 or 2 cuz I was out of town, but il be at pb3. Il be at the game too thanks to the generosity of the isles, giving us free tickets to another game after the avalanche game/snowstorm. Let’s go isles tonight! Play hard, get on the score sheet kids, but just fall short in the end for tavheduch’s sake!

  24. avatar Brian G says:

    I’m in for PB3

  25. avatar Eric says:

CB: Good idea to host a pb3. Any update on the uniform situation for next year. Any chance the current 3rd jersey becomes the regular jersey replacing the moronic jerseys they currently have, as well as going back to there original white sweaters? Do you think drafting Tavares will get the OK from the league? I am sure if the islanders are lucky enough to get the first overall pick, that it would only help the league in selling jerseys, to allow the islanders to make that switch for next season instead of the year after.

  26. avatar ISLESFAN999 says:

Honestly Jaffe is on of the best announcers by far. He is much better than Michaletti who was boring like the rangers..!!!

  27. avatar Desmond says:

Sounds awesome. Billy seems like an awesome guy to talk hockey with, especially without having to go through all the PC nonsense/censorship that comes with covering games on TV. Since I’m on spring break during that time, I’d definitely like to go.

  28. avatar bergie20 says:

billy jaffe! free wings and beer! i’m in!

  29. avatar Matt Brosseau says:

    Nightfly #3

I second that…there are lots of hidden Islanders fans out here in Jersey…there’s no way I can make it out to the Island unless it’s a weekend so CB, think about crossing the river one of these seasons!

  30. avatar Kevin C says:

Free beer, an Islander game and wings? Sounds better then going to the game
    I’m in.

  31. avatar 7th Woman says:

I’d go anywhere Jaffe would be. Although the 3/26 meeting was announced on the broadcast by CJ Papa, if you want, I’ll say I heard it here first.

  32. avatar Potvinstyle33 says:

! am in for PB III!!!

  33. avatar Obs says:

I would love to come down. One question, Would this one be a family oriented event? A sort of “Bring the kids” type thing or a “Boys & Girls night out”?

  34. avatar admin says:

all ages are welcome, but I should remind everyone the event is a possibility – not a definite. I was looking to see if there was interest and we have to finalize some issues. I should know if it’s happening in a few weeks…CB

  35. avatar David says:

CHRIS…IM ALL IN and would bring guests! sounds great!

  36. avatar Joey303 says:

CB -Loved PBII , PBIII I will have to decline (although beer is better than wine), due to it being a Saturday. :)
At least Tampa got a point yesterday. I still believe that they are too good to be playing this bad, we will see.

  37. Count me in for PB III! Unfortunately, the past two times I’ve had my own hockey games to ref/play and this time I want to make sure I’m there.

  38. avatar Froggy says:

Count me in. Missed the first two but would love to make one!

  39. avatar coral springs isle fan says:

I’ll fly up from Florida for free beer & wings. Count me in. I also have a lot of respect for Jaffe and would look forward to CB & Jaffe answering questions.

    When is the lottery drawing?

  40. avatar Helene says:

Just logging in to let you know we really enjoyed PBII – altho we spent much of the nite in back in dining area. I would love to be at a PBIII, but it is Passover and we cannot partake of eats or beverages. We could hang, but inhaling good food smells would be a disaster. Enjoy loggoing on daily and your “non-politically approved” take on the team/world. (and now I know what you look like).

  41. avatar Coach B says:

I will try to make it. The draft lottery is April 13th, it was on the NHL Network last year, should be again.

  42. avatar mtrico says:

That sounds like one pretty good idea to me.

  43. avatar Big Dog says:

Are you kidding me, Free beer and wings..No way i can pass that bad boy up!!!

  44. avatar Wedregast says:

CB, I was at PBII and had a great time talking hockey and drinking wine. If you do PBIII I’m definately in!

  45. avatar JPinVA says:

Looks like the third time will be the charm.
I’ll be in NY and that game will be my daughter’s first NHL experience.
Her first communion is in a few weeks, this would be like her puckmitvah.

  46. avatar Tim says:

Are you people serious? Jaffe is a clown, and I believe the Isles are the only team in hockey with 0 games of NHL experience behind the mic. Meanwhile, Denis Potvin works in Florida. One of the best commentators in hockey? Have any of you watched any games outside of NYI fairytale land? How can you honestly make that judgment? It looks like the only fans left here are the PUNCH DRINKERS. Uh-oh. I said it. I’ll just call it a year.

  47. avatar Bri on LI says:

Please throw PB III! A family emergency kept me from the last one, and I don’t want to miss the last of the season!

  48. avatar iceman from Quesnel BC says:

Hey Chris-First of all,I want to thank-you for being my life line to NYI information this year. It’s been unbelievable. On the subject of PB night, would you be interested in organizing a PB night next year for people who live out of state,or in my case out of the country to fly to New York city and watch a couple of games on a week-end? Cheers and keep up the awesome work.

  49. avatar Akeem says:

    CB,
Any chance of putting up some photos of PB night II, for those of us who couldn’t be there?

  50. avatar Chris H says:

PB night III sounds great…4 of us are going to the game so depending on where it is (our 5yr old would be with us) we would definitely consider going. Hope to see you soon! And thanks again for all the hard work you’ve done covering OUR team all season – this is the best blog around!

  51. avatar 19 ISLE in NJ 22 says:

PB night III!!! … if you can do it I’d be interested. I’d be going with my brother and 2 nephews since we’ve already decided to attend that Philly game … I live 100 miles from NVMC so if PBN III is a night event we’ll be crashing at the Marriott … Hear that Kate???!!! Hockey Touri$m = $pending Money.

I’ll add if people think stimulus money to the LHP takes money out of their pocket… that money is already being taken out of your pocket from the Feds … you might as well get a return for your investment.

  52. avatar Pat says:

Tim 46 – I disagree totally. Mr. Jaffe is a fine color commentator. He did play college hockey at Michigan – so he can relate to being a player. No rule says that you have to be a former NHL player. Versus and NBC have used him a lot – so I suppose you know more than they do ?

Ever listen to the Buffalo games? Some of the smaller market games ? Jaffe is advancing up the charts at rapid speed.

  53. avatar Matt S says:

This sounds like a great idea! It is a good date to have it because it will provide a chance for a number of college students (like myself) to attend, because we will be home on break and not away at school.

  54. avatar Gary says:

Tim #46 – If you’re going to be a bleeping troll, go on the website that I will never name and go twist Dwayne’s tail. Besides, your description of Billy Jaffe is laughable. He is a quality analyst with a great sense of humor who’s not afraid to give his opinion even if it’s not popular. Outside of Denis Potvin (Florida)and Drew Remenda (San Jose), he’s anyone’s equal or better. He’s way better than Chico or Micheletti. We had him at the NYI Booster club and he was a great guest and funny. You want to be a horse’s rump, go bother someone else.
Sorry CB, I just had to jump on this guy.

  55. avatar Tim says:

Izzy, answer some of my questions and your comments will gain some validity. Calling me a moron accomplishes nothing. I’m very much open to discussion.

Pat, Jaffe is consistently wrong in his analyses…especially penalties. According to him, 90% of calls against the Isles are fruitless.

Are you seriously going to use Versus as a benchmark for quality broadcasting? Their presentation of hockey is disgraceful, starting with Bill Patrick.

Jaffe’s prior broadcasting experience before MSG hired the cheapest available color commentator? The Deb Kaufman (or I guess it would be CJ Papa now–who I actually like) of the Atlanta Thrashers! Wow.

Give me a break here guys. Butchy should be back there, though I’m not sure how long he could handle sitting next to Howie 82 times a year.

Bring us an Islander. God knows there are plenty out there. Enough already with these clowns.

  56. avatar JPinVA says:

Any chance you hold PBIII in Eisenhower Park… I know the courses there pretty well, and I’m pretty sure we can find a place for Tim(?) that doesn’t have WI-FI…
I know there is very little chance that he shows up, but YOU know one of his IP addresses, just send him some spam announcing free Wii enlargement.
And as a CenterIce subscriber I’d put Jaffe in the top 5 in terms of commentary.

  57. avatar Jimmy Mac says:

    Hey Chris…

Let us know as soon as possible about PB3.

I see they are playing the Bruins the next day.

This could be my excuse to finally get to a game.

I have never been to Long Island.

I could fly in for the weekend to take in both games.

I just need to get permission from my wife…lol.

  58. avatar JPinVA says:

Regardless of some people’s opinions we (as Islander fans) will probably lose Jaffe in the near future. His work on Islander broadcasts is pretty good. The guy is prepared every night, he’s entertaining, and his informed opinions on the current officiating is usually pretty tight.
His spots on the NHL Network are great. His league wide knowledge and ability to communicate those thoughts in a call-in ad hoc format is tremendous.
If we could make a three way trade where the Rangers get Howie, the Caps get rosival and we end up with Benninoti… then I could stop listening to the games in Mandarin Chinese.

  59. avatar Joe says:

WO! Ill be home for PB 3 if it happens, that would be awesome.

  60. avatar Jason says:

PB 3.0 please! I missed the 1st 2 and should be going to that game..

    Thanks CB

  61. avatar Joe says:

Double checked, Ill be home till the 14th, yes! Im in, probably with 3 guests.

  62. avatar Joao says:

Chris, thanks for the name drop. You made my day. Thank you for everything you do and I hope you will do this for years to come. I’ll be sure to go to future PB nights so we can hang.

    Joao

  63. avatar Darthziggy says:

CB, I’m planning on coming out from Pennsylvania to take in both games that weekend, and throwing in a PB party would be the icing on the cake. Keep us posted with more details!

  64. avatar Akeem says:

Since we’re talking Billy Jaffe, Howie Rose and broadcasting, I just want to say I REALLY miss John Weideman on the radio. He’s the best hockey radio play by play guy I’ve ever heard. I know he’s with the Blackhawks now, but I’d sure like to have him back…

  65. avatar mattyboy says:

Raffle Kelly is one tall drink of cute juice. Stunning.

  66. avatar Bklyn333 says:

I can barely get out of work early for weeknight games (have eaten or given away most of my tickets for weeknights), so a PB on a weekend with an afternoon game is a great idea. Just hope it’s someplace I can get to (and get home from) on mass transit from the game (I don’t drive).
