RANGERS 4, ISLANDERS 2
The game, Hillen, Wrecker, Wang, Lighthouse
9:45 pm – I asked Scott Gordon in the post-game presser if the Jack Hillen goal is an ideal illustration of what he’s asking his puck-moving defensemen to do. Gordon said the key for that goal, and his team’s play the last few weeks, is that they are now backing each other up. “Earlier in the season, they were going. But that’s all they were doing,” said Gordon. “We were running around and not backing each other up.”
Now there seems to be more method to the madness.
9:25 pm – Unlike the loss two weeks ago at the Garden – where the Islanders were efficiently okay – I thought the Islanders showed balls and gave blood at the Coliseum tonight. It’s a step back if they lay an egg against New Jersey on Saturday afternoon, but tonight they can leave the barn with their heads held high.
This, as much as any game this season, is one the kids can learn from.
9:14 pm – Markus Naslund’s stick shatters on a 20 mph slapper which deflects off Radek Martinek and breaks the Islanders’ hearts. 4-2. Avery penalty gives Islanders power play and a little hope.
9:04 pm – Joel Rechlicz, when not fighting: better than Mitch Fritz. That’s all we can go on right now, and he may not get another shift with a tight game late. Still, not bad for the kid.
8:56 pm – Gorgeous goal by Jack Hillen, a shot of confidence for the young pro and the kind of play Scott Gordon yearns for.
8:53 pm – Rangers fans chanting “Kan-sas Ci-ty,” which isn’t a terrible thing for the Islanders if it gets a lot of publicity.
8:50 pm – Incredible skill play by Zherdev on Gomez goal, followed by Trent Hunter called for boarding Sean Avery.
8:25 pm – One team’s in last, the other’s on the playoff fringe. And yet for the more than 16,000 people at the old barn tonight, there’s no better place to be in New York. Rangers up, 2-1.
8:05 pm – Never thought I’d see Joel Rechlicz on the same ice surface at the same time as Markus Naslund. Could you imagine the hysteria if he had poked in that Comeau goal?
7:38 pm – Making up for the “Meet Me at the Lighthouse” seat-sagger, Islanders game ops show highlight reel of Yann Danis saves over the last six weeks. Well done, this being hockey and all.
7:20 pm - Only four players in the Islanders’ lineup tonight have not played at least one game for Bridgeport of the American Hockey League: Mark Streit, Dean McAmmond, Andy Hilbert and Josh Bailey.
On paper, the Rangers would seem to have an excellent opportunity to tryout their new-look offense. Here’s the Islanders’ defense:
Streit – Gervais
Hillen – Martinek
MacDonald – Callahan
6:59 pm – This blog is extremely pro-Lighthouse. That much has been clear since Day One. But omg, there is no bigger buzzkill in professional sports before a big game than the video presentation of the “Meet Me at the Lighthouse” commercial where some hyperactive dude sings about a fantasy destination that doesn’t currently exist.
6:55 pm – Wearing As for the Islanders: Mark Streit, Dean McAmmond, Trent Hunter.
6:20 pm – On the MSG Plus Pre-Game Show, Charles Wang said he wants “certainty” on the Lighthouse Project by the start of the 2009-10 hockey season in October. He also discussed the 120-day window elected officials have to approve the project before the Islanders can get out of their lease.
In a dramatic moment at the end of the interview, the Islanders owner looked in the camera and said that if the project doesn’t get done, “It’s because of you and me – because we elect our officials.”
Wang made it clear his every wish and intention is to keep the Islanders on Long Island.
4:30 pm - The Islanders have recalled enforcer Joel Rechlicz, forward Jesse Joensuu and defensemen Andrew MacDonald and Joe Callahan for tonight’s match against the Rangers. Talk about the game in Comments.
Comments.

The game, Hillen, Wrecker, Wang, Lighthouse
-
Pretty much guarantees some fisticuffs at Fort Neverlose…yes, Derek. It should be fun.
-
Nothing like adding a little gas to the fire.
-
But can he skate? Or play more than 3 minutes…we shall see. Hopefully he will “wreck” Avery. LOL
-
I wanna know why no fritz? If there’s gonna be fisticuffs i want to see Fritz knock Orr out
-
good give the guy a chance we need some toughness and no disrespect to fritz but someone who can skate a little better
-
It’s more mysterious this way. at this points why not?
-
There is no Fritz because they already know he can’t play. They want to see what the Wrecker can do.
-
Did I see those Utah stats correctly? 1A 110 PIMs? Lets see what The Wrecker can do!
-
They had a choice of the Wrecker, Fritz or Oglethorpe.
-
Repeating what I posted on the previous blog….Isles in a SIGNIFICANT upset tonight….not just beating the Rags…but BEATING THE RAGS.
(for some reason some Ranger fans and scribes think that with Guerin gone, the Rags are a 2+ goal favorite now….WOW…all I can say is WOW)I sure hope Billy left his red cape behind for someone else to use.
GIVE ‘EM HELL GORDON!!!
It’s our Stanley Cup Game for the Year. -
I have not had the chance to see Joel Rechlicz play before but he has to be a better player than Fritz. Fritz no doubt can fight but that is about all he can do
-
I guess i shouldnt be surprised to see Joel get a chance. Good idea to see what they have in this guy, if hes got NHL potential. Hes got a tough first customer in Colton Orr if they drop the gloves tonight. Im sure Joel will want to earn his reputation in the league and it starts tonight.
-
Ohh mannnn… I have class until 9. But I’m putting this on the DVR, and enjoying it when I get home.
-
Hey Oglethorpe would have been perfect
-
Nothing personal against Fritz, but for his one maybe two shifts I’d rather see Rechlicz come up and play. I dont expect him to light up the rags, but hey at 6’4 and 230 some odd pounds defiantly gives the isles some more punch to throw at the rangers tonite.
-
Fritz already got spanked by Orr at MSG. Lets see how this kid can do, hopefully better
-
We coulda called up Oglethorpe?
-
It’s a sad comment on the state of this team that people here are more excited about who is going to fight, rather than who is going to win the game.
Disgusting…………SW
-
We know we’re going to win the game, the question is will we take there manhood and season as well!
-
SW…I could give a hoot about fights…When I say “BEATING THE RAGS” I mean significantly on the scoreboard and on the ice.
-
I don’ tthink you’re giving Fritzie enough credit Islesin2010. He held his own against a valid NHL heavy. It may have looked worse than it was because Colton opened up an old cut over Fritz’s eye.
This is kind of odd in that this situation is (and can be) much like the Goddard one. I’m pretty sure Milbury stole Goddard from FL(?) for nothing, and then ex-isled him on the back of a coach that would never play him (stirling). If he turns out to be another Goddard… Wa-effin-hoo. But Gordon already proved he’s not a big fan of violence in hockey… so.. same outcome is pending. -
I’m a huge Rechlicz supporter and I know him personally. I talked to him this past Sunday in Bridgeport. With that said, I don’t believe he’s ready for this. It has nothing to do with skill or fighting or anything.
He’s been in the ECHL most of the year and has played 3 AHL games this year. He’s been in one fight against Matt Clackson [who one tough SOB] but theres a huge difference between Matt Clackson and Colton Orr. I know Joel’s game and he will go out there and hit people. The guy gives it 110% every shift. I’ll bet he forces Orr to fight him, simply because he plays with such enthusiasm but he should have had a few more AHL games under his belt [and possible 4-5 fights] before taking on a guy like Orr.
All Im saying is that, I hope Rechlicz doesn’t go out there and get hurt and people crap on him simply because the organization wanted to bring the circus to town. -
Forget “The Wrestler”, here’s “The Wrecker”.
-
Ray. that’s good info, and what I was gtting at on the previous thread. Thanks for the info.
-
its a good thing i got a big lead in pim’s, cos rechlitz. is not on the isles roster in my league, but picked up jesse
-
I hated fighting leftys
-
Hey Chris,
How come the isles only got a 4th maybe 3rd round pick for guerin when the leafs got a 2nd round pick for dominic moore. Would u say it was because Moore is due 200k while guerin’s due around 1 mil for the rest of the year?
-
“The Wrecker” will have his hands full. He’s willing but not a great fighter. I do like that the Isles will have a combo of size (Jackman, Callahan, Joensuu, Rechlicz) and young talent (Bergy, Okposo, Neilsen, Bailey & Joensuu) for their lineup. I still would have loved to see Haley come up and take care of Avery and then make a statement by going with Orr.
-
Yeah, I’m worried Orr is going to beat the hell out of him. Wouldn’t it be nice to go to one of these games and not worry about the team getting embarrassed by the Rag$ with all of their vermin fans in the building.
Oh, as an aside, the chant for Avery tonight is “SLOPPY SECONDS.” Would be nice to see a meltdown from him in his first game back.
-
(29) Haley is playing with a broken hand and although he fought Danny Richmond on Monday, he fought with one glove on. Plus he’s not Islander property. He has an AHL deal, although I love the guy and we could def use him. Heres the fight:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKkCoMY4i3M&feature=channel_page -
I just want to see someone break Avery’s facial bones.
-
(31) Yeah, I saw that. He landed a nice right with the glove on, though. I did not know that he was not Islander property. What does that mean for his future with Isles/Tigers and what is an AHL deal? Thx
-
Rechlicz, not only can fight but can skate and hit. Hes about 100 times faster than Mitch Fritz.
-
Interested to see how Jonesuu plays tonight. Maybe he will come out with some confidence and score another. Be cool to see!
-
Hmmm interesting they bring back joensuu. I thought that was a one game thing, i guess his goal impressed them. I thought he looked good overall but he needs to learn to skate better. I thought his skating was almost as bad as fritz. Looking forward to seeing what rechlicz can do.
Go Isles -
The Wrecker, meet Sean Avery.
-
Time to break out a new roll of tin foil
-
I saw Rechlicz play in Juniors. He was terrible at that level. It makes we want to stop being an Isles fan after nearly 30 years! I thought goonism was leaving the game
-
Lots of tension in the air tonight, should be fun….a sloppy seconds chant will be almost as good as crack head theo, I love hating that dbag I’m glad he’s back.
-
39- I saw him play last year, he didnt look terrible at all. This is a good move if you ask me. Hes signed for the next couple years, might as well get him up now.
-
after watching rechlicz video, lets get mirasty the nasty.
-
any video of wrecker in the brigde
-
tootoo, lbs for lbs and take on anybody, plus with waht flash wants to play, just might bring out the wheat king fromwith in.
-
Joe- heres a video of Rechlicz in the Bridge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmckW04RbbE
-
great great fight by the wrecker, on a side night; hopefully tambo can keep up his play in tonight’s game
-
(33) An AHL deal means he’s only signed to Bridgeport. That doesnt mean the Islanders won’t sign him but for right now he’s only Bridgeport’s property and not the Islanders.
-
Priority one win the game side note knock some teeth out in the process(not necessarily fighting as much as air gasping hits), and lord knows don’t get pushed around or embarassed in your the last NY-NY rivalry game of the year.
-
oh yeah the wrecker!!!!! A win would be soooo golden after the deadline we had… but we’ve been playing good hockey so its almost like we’re due for a bad game.
Ps- any advice on how to post from a blackberry? I keep getting error messages
-
I’m going to have to Tivo this SOG of a game … have my own game tonight …. really looking forward to seeing how our kids have progressed and measure up.
Enjoy all … and hopefully 505 is right … that would be suhweeet!!!
Tamby 2 G
Okposo 2 G
Bailey 3 A
Hillen 1 G -
hell yes! can’t wait to see what the wrecker has. heard a lot about him on this blog and on islandermania. wasn’t impressed with fritz, hopefully this kid will show some promise.
love how we’re seeing so many kids from bridgeport. at least they’re showing us that the rebuild isn’t just a concept. they’re actually going for it. now, is the rebuild strong… that’s a different question all together.
-
calling up joel brings the promise of at least one fight. he’s a nice guy off the ice, but will kick your rump on it. Congrats to joel rechlicz! here’s to a hopeful pounding of Avery, Voros, Orr, and all the other ranger scum.
-
tootoo
-
I have butterflies. i hope these kids hang together and shock the world
-
By the start of next season? Man, I was hoping for something before then.
But it is true. I know some loyal Republicans in the TOH who are absolutely determined not to vote for a single member of the board, including Kate Murray, unless she shows some positive leadership on this issue. She may be re-elected, but there is no way that opposing this is a political plus for her. The only question is just how negative it is.
-
Can someone please record the Wang interview and post it on you tube?
-
Alright seriously, there has to be something we can do. Whens the next election? We have to keep OUR team on Long Island
-
Kate Murray and some of the board are up for re-election in November.
-
CB…What if Wang doesn’t get certainty by start of next season but Kate loses (I hope she does) he would have to extend the new person a chance to work things out, right?
-
Way too many rags fans here tonight
-
interview on now isles pregame
-
My friend is at the game and said in warm-ups, The Wrecker doesn’t look like he can skate. Also, Orr is yapping away at Hunter at center ice. Interesting….
-
OUR! LIGHT! HOUSE! …OUR! LIGHT! HOUSE!
-
Anyone else enjoy Butch Goring on the pre-game and between periods?
I do.
-
Did CB just type ‘omg’?
-
Hard puncher Orr vs an open style/no defense fighter Rechlicz. I’m a little worried. Can’t let the dish RAGS control our building.
-
Sounds like an AWESOME crowd tonight!
-
The Islanders need to hire whoever Jackman worked with last summer.
-
So far, good first shift for Recker.
-
Outstanding energy and flow through these first 10 minutes. An almost frantic pace.
-
Tambellini sucks.
-
Haha Comeau blowing Avery a kiss.
-
Why does Kyle Okposo fall down so much? Has anybody else noticed that he seems to hit the ice almost every shift?
-
Haha ‘Blake Comeau’s in a loving mood’
-
i really loved the way we played in the 1st, its a shame to be down 1 goal
-
Good first period …. Looking forward to some Comeau vs. Avery finishing of checks in the second.
-
Wang was pretty funny in part one of the interview.
“Where’s Kansas City?”
“I do like BBQ”
He is winning me over
-
Rechlicz with the assist!
-
Congrats to Rechlicz on his point.
If Joensuu improves his skating, he could end up being a real solid player. He has pretty good hands.
-
Is everyone happy now? Our enforcer produced in his first ever NHL game.
-
Agreed Jim, Joensuu looks good.
-
(81) More than Fritz has done. Plus Rechlicz hasn’t looked out of place.
-
He almost had another assist just now.
-
74- Nick I noticed that too. I dont get it. I dont know if hes just trying to much and losing his footing or what but the kid is always on the ice. No matter, the kid has skills
-
I really like Mcammond. Really hope they resign him next year. Could definitely be a 10 goal guy next year.
-
Does Joensuu have a legitimate chance at being a regular on this team next season or is the plan for him to play another year in the minors?
-
(87) The original plan was to keep him in the minor for another season but he seems to be holding his own out there and will def fight for a spot next season.
-
I think they’d like Joensuu to play another year in the minors. If he comes to camp a faster skater, he may force them into keeping him.
-
As much as I want the first pick overall ….I want the Isles to put a dent in the rangers playoff hopes even more.
I HATE THE RANGERS !!!
-
BRILLIANT SHIFT
Tambellini looked really good right there. This kid has really elevated his game and his intensity.
-
who the hell are these guys? there is energy from the boys! this is incredible! i’m actually excited watching them tonight! who needs the old farts? bring on the youth movement!!
-
Only 5 shots all period for the Rags!
-
JJ has some skills. These kids are fun to watch!
-
i am so proud of the boys tonight.
-
I am just amazed that we have completely gassed that Rangers squad. One thing about Gordon’s system that I like. It favors younger skaters and older oponents really wear down when it’s executed right.
-
strap kate murray in a seat and make her watch this game. if she isnt a hockey fan after this… we have no hope.
-
Wang on radio side (XM and local) doing his sell.
NYI is outplaying NYR and losing. Big 3rd period needed. GO KIDS!!!
-
One thing about this team – they play hard always. It is great to see so hopefully this is one step in the right direction.
-
I’m pretty impressed by JJ and Wrecker. Good stuff
-
This game is a result of Gordon’s hard work with the kids this year. He’s a teacher, can he get us to the next level after three years, that’s the question but for right now the right guy for the job. He seems to be a surly SOB but these kids are doing fine. I’m prepared for attack as most people usually get for praising Gordon….so be it.
-
Good stuff….If they keep playing like this we might be in jeopardy of losing the number one. They look fast and are playing hard but you can see some of the rawnwss with the kids.
Ranger fans better get their licks because in 2 years this team will be strong.
Wang interview between periods:
Nothing new really but interesting at the end he said if it doesnt go through its hid fault…then said its your fault too because we elect the public officials………….ouch!
Get involved support the Lighthouse!!!!!
-
Hey DMac, this is the same Gordon who didn’t have Comeau (the best player in this game) in the lineup for the first part of the season. You asked for it.
As for the game,
Let’s go – do it for Spinner Spencer, Germaine Gagnon, Billy Harris, Bert Marshall, the dynasty, the hope, just frikkin beat these guys!!!
-
Nice hit Andy
-
CB,
Can you explain Clear Day in the AHL?
I saw that Kyle Okposo and Blake Comeau were sent down and recalled.
So that means they are eligible for the AHL playoffs, correct? -
How about taking away the pass Marty?
-
That’s two games in a row martinek doesn’t take away The passing lane during a two on one
-
So, we all want fights and there are none. And , 505 and the silly optimists looking foolish as usual. Our claim to fame is losing a first round playoff to the Leafs. Enough said.
-
JACKO! Congrats!
-
Nice goal Hillen!
-
WTF with the Hunter penalty??????? He hit Ovary with the puck. This league blows!!!
Hillen!!! Campoli who???
Orr hurt! HAHAHA
-
Is there anything better than watching Avery get plastered at every turn? Loving it!
-
112, Nick, I’ll take an Isles win on top of that and then I would say it’s a good night.
-
Hey (19) Comeau was where he belonged, and if the Islanders are smart, that’s where Bailey should be for the next season for the first 20-40 games. I don’t throw tantrums over young guys paying their dues in the minors. Rushing prospects never works.
-
Orr declined Rechlicz, damn.
-
The Islanders have a lot of left handed shooters. All of our centers are left handed.
-
I would like to see Hilbert back with this team next season. But I certainly don’t want him to the biggest offseason move.
-
Hunter is killing us with the penalties
-
Hey Dmac – Comaeu showed he belonged last year – another mistake by Gordon. No comparison between him and Bailey. A rookie coach makes a rookie mistake……again.
-
martinek is so damn weak.
-
This Avery obsession must stop.
Pls shut Howie up -
not nearly the physical game everybody expected.
-
wang was good in his interview but blew all of his credibility at the end when he said “we have a good team”…JK! couldn’t resist.
-
F THIS! When is the last time this team got a break???? A weak shot that Martinek puts in the net. And that’s the game.
All that’s left is to inflict some pain which won’t happen. Screw it……….later.
-
Hey 19 last year we had a different coach and a different system. This year new coach new system and Gordon felt Comeau needed some time to adjust to it in the minors and he was right. The Kid has to prove himself to the coach, not the other way around.
-
These kids are playing their asses off. Joensuu looks like a giant on this team…he’s using it and its effective.
-
wow we stink ..we ARE THE WORST TEAM IN ALL OF PRO SPORTS
-
I do wonder if this team or any team for that matter can sustain this attacking style of play for a full 60 minutes. The Isles defintely looked fatigued in the 3rd after a dominant 2nd period.
-
Last one for the night, just a couple of observations. Hunter is rusty but will get it back in the next couple of games. This team is dramatically different from the Yashin crew and even from last season. They never quit and they play hard and fast every night. And lastly it never ceases to amaze me when announcers proclaim that “the officiating is great tonight, they’re letting them play”. Translation= They’re not calling penalties that are supposed to be called. But they call Bailey for tripping when someone steps on his stick and Joensuu (I know that’s spelled wrong) gets hooked after making a brilliant move (with the puck) to get open in front of the net and no call. Yeah terrific. Maybe they will decide to follow the rule book in the next game,,or not,,we never know.
-
i would call that one of the more encouraging losses of all time.
-
Great game, I’ll take this anyday.
-
Hey Joe RVC #127….ever hear of the Detroit Lions?
-
Kan-sas- City was a blow below the belt, even for the rangers fans!
-
I know people here are dissapointed and I hate it too…but look at this lineup. They played a hell of a game and showed plenty of heart.
You arguably have half a dozen young players who probaly shouldn’t even be in the NHL at this point in their careers and they dictated the pace for the better part of the game.
-
Rangers fans dont even know where kansas city is
-
Rangers should pat themselves on the back, they beat a minor league hockey team.
Back to the Tavares sweepstakes.
-
seriously, if i were at that game i would start the chant “YOU – HAVE- NO CLASS! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!
-
OOps one more, Dalymac you’re correct and I agree Gordon is a surly SOB and I love it. A few other Surly coaches include Bowman,Parcells and Bellichick. In the beginning of their careers they were hated by the fans. Then they started winning when they got better players and the fans loved them. You shouldn’t get lambasted because you say you like Gordon. People want to blame him for everything under the sun and then not give him credit for Danis (“how could he treat him like that”?) Comeau,Okposo,Neilsen,Jackman, Bergenheim and every other young kid that is progressing each game under his wing. He was brought in to teach the kids and he’s doing a great job at it. We will see if he can be a winning coach when he gets more horses.
-
CB getting in on the post game presser!
-
1. In the previous thread I asked if anybody knew who Avery was dating. Now I’m pretty sure it’s Howie Rose. Good lord, Howie, don’t get that dress cleaned in case you need it for evidence at the hearing.
2. Wrecker. Keeper. I’d love to know what the linesman was telling him when Orr went to get his vagisil from the trainer’s table.
3. I haven’t kept a clear count but the three hardest hits hilbert has delivered have all been on NY Islanders. Two of them resulting in goals. He’s a solid hockey player but I will not shed a tear if he’s replaced by Colliton on the roster. -
It was entertaining, and had a good flow. Figured there would be more scarps in this one.
-
4. JJ… needs to work on his skating, but there’s no reason this BIG (you can’t teach that) kid can’t be an NHLer.
5. Gordon… I know you have the thinnest lineup in the NHL but Hilbert and Tambellini on the same PP unit… come on man, there are interpertive dance teams that are bigger, and more aggressive than those two.
6. The Isles out skated the rangers, they out hustled them, out hit them, out chanced them… this is one of those games where they needed a little DP magic. This is one of those games where $56M outmans $24M Great game though. -
I only caught the 3rd period, but the game had a good pace to it. Or should I say the Islanders had a good pace? I’m really glad that Witt will remain with this team. Nice goal by Hillen! I don’t think Hunter deserved the boarding call on Avery and a little bit later he’s whacked across the stick and surprise…no call? Rechlicz is twice the skater than Fritz.
-
JPinVA(#140) My thoughts exactly…what was that ref telling him. It looked like he was scolding him?
-
they play hard, they never quit, and they are working on the talent. if you can’t win, at least attack and play aggressive. so far out of it, bad nites will happen. but our guys kept getting off the deck, pushing back, and crashing the goalmouth. good effort.
-
isles played well and exactly how gordon wants them to play. they are getting there. completely classless and disgusting chant by the rag fans. not that i’m surprised.
-
7. Jack Hillen… go find Sean Hills old locker… You’re gonna be pretty damn good but you need a growth spurt. I’m pretty sure Gomez was telling him, “don’t make me embarrass you” when he was clearing the crease.
8. Radek… plays a damn solid game, and let’s himself, once again let’s himself get called up on stage so the Magician can make him look like a clown. Love ya marty, but you need to grow a pair.
9. If this was what you wanted to do, NICE JOB MR. GORDON. I’m not crazy about how you got there.. but this team finished it’s checks, and they were ENATERTAINING tonight. Kudos! -
Good game.
Don’t see how any of these move improved the Rags. Despite the win they look like a bigger mess than they were a few weeks ago.
Looks a lot like the Rags teams that used to miss the post season on a yearly basis.
We gotta nice pick coming that should be a huge difference maker in games like these.
-
JPINVA ,Great observations. I just want to caution you on the Tambs PP minutes thing. It could be Garth telling Gordon, or both just realizing they really want that first pick and why not give Tambs as many chances to prove himself as possible. If he scores great if not they get to see what he can do while also securing the pick. I understand about playing for pride but at which point in the season do you start putting guys in that will keep you competitive while also keeping you from winning yourself out of an important player? It’s a tough call IMO. Now, having Hilbert on the PP is a mystery to me. Guys a great defensive forward and excellent pk’er but that should be his role and they shouldn’t expand it. All I can think is that Gordons trying to get it in the teams head ,for the future, that hard work will be rewarded. Hilbert is said to be one of the hardest working players on the team. That includes film room, weight room, practice, and game. He has a great attitude, now if he could only score!
-
Good game….an “oh well loss”..505 ends the season at 0-1 on game predictions.
Comeau’s best game of the year.
Hillen played a very nice game.
Gervais misses the net too much from the blue line…
Get Joenssu into a ballet class in the offseason. (I’m serious).
If Andropov shows up every night he will be a huge help to the Rags.
Avery should be sore in the morning. (hopefully because of the game).
And if anyone gets wacky or excited about Guerin’s 1st point as a Pen..watch the replay…pretty much a blind clearing pass that Crosby picked off and skated the length of the ice with and put home.Keep playing the rest of the season like tonight, and I won’t be disappointed.
At some point the breaks will go our way. -
10. Sean Avery… wow.. masterful piece of acting. Where was that call when Lucic put jackman through the glass…Jackman gets stitched up… Avery gets up and chirps… there is absolutely no justice in the NHL other than THE CODE. Can I send Gordo my copy.
I’m going to leave this one unnumbered. Wang and Howie sold me… where do I sign the petition. But I’m going to put an asterisk next to my name… NO MORE MEEAT ME AT THE LIGHTHOUSE until there is a LIGHTHOUSE!
CB, sorry for hogging (for lack of a better word) those are my 4, and all under 100 words. I think.
-
best moment of the game: Comeau “kiss/kiss”
-
Is Stan getting 10 bucks everytime he mentions the devils…jeez every post game question to coach and players about the devils…who did we play tonight?
-
i’m impressed with Mr. Wang…he’s finally forcing the politicians to do something. I think he should make his threats stronger then he does.
-
MM30 your so right. Stan Fischler is so bad at his job. Always has stupid comments and is just embarrasing to watch when he interviews people
-
Losing the game isn’t the worst thing anyway. 3 points back is too close for comfort, Keep it at 5 and above
-
7W(152).. Damn.. that was gonna be #2. Thanks for bringing that up… that was CLASSIC.
For those of you who were disgusted by the KC chants… that’s what happens when you don’t get tickets for your own team.
Those cretins can’t get tickets for their own games, so they spend their drool soaked money on Long island… which is helpful… but nausiating.
End of debate. -

“And , 505 and the silly optimists looking foolish as usual.”
How do you know what I am wearing?
And what is YOUR alternative to optimism? -
mm30 and islanders1984 i agree with both of u. stan things hes funny so he tries to make up a little joke and then he gets embarrased. u should watch the persons face expression wen stan is done interviewing them. they look like they want to kill him.
-
I was at the game tonight sitting in the 2nd row from the glass. The most striking thing to me tonight was the fact that we were skating a minor league team out there and we didnt look so bad. A loss is a loss but maybe some of our younger guys really do have a future with this club. When 4 of the 6 defensemen are Gervais, Callahan, Hillen and Mcdonald, some of your forwards include Bailey, Okposo, Rechlitz, Joenssu, Nielsen, Jackman etc, maybe we arent so bad. Danis was our 3rd string goaltender going into this year.
I am watching the rags come down the ice with Drury, Gomez, Antropov, Avery Zherdev etc, it is kinda odd. Our power play unit tonight was hilbert, hunter, nielsen streit and hillen. Um, are you kidding me.
I hope we resign Weight.
-
another thing about stan. does he work for the devils, the rangers, and the isles. i mean cmon can he pick a team.
-
Quick update on the Sarnia Trio, Matt Martin, 1 goal (33), Mark Katic 3 assists and Justin DiBenedetto and assist in Sarnia’s 4-3 win over Guelph.
-
I just jumped back on the wagon, Finally Rechlitz and some entertainment!!! Best Islander news i heard all year. To bad it took so long!!! I might be able to go to a game this year!!!
-
All four ranger goals were gifts from the islanders.
Goal 1-Jackman terrible pass right to Zherdev.
Goal 2-On a power play.
Goal 3-McAmmond and Hilbert collide which leads to a turnover.
Goal 4-Power play and a weak slapshot by Naslund that goes way wide and Martinek tips it in.
You can’t say that the Rangers worked hard. You can say that the Islanders screwed up and they need work. -
So who thinks Andy Hilbert is still a “good hockey player”
If he is on the team next season, I might just cancel my season tickets. This guy is awful!!!
-
Hilbert gets good scoring chances, but doesn,t put the puck in. Just like in the first period when he was on a breakaway.
-
it will be a dark day if the Isles get sold out of state. how much more money you think Kate Murray and the rest of those pigs want “under the table.” maybe take care of their retirements? what a joke.
-
the kids play well….only 4 players on the active roster didn’t play in bridgeport this year
-
Naslund can really skate…and 20+ goals this year. are rags fans disappointed with him? Take it from the current have nots in the league – rags fans should be happy with him
-
It gives hope how the youngsters are playing. Riechlecz and Josnnu both desrve to play against NJ.
Some bad bounces led to the Rangers win. Loved the gritty play by most of the guys.
Martinek stinks yet again, scorign on his own team.
-
CB:
I can’t believe how many Isles fans are waxing poetic about this performance. As a 26+ year Isles fan I am sick of the same old story…”Under-maned NYI’s play hard and fall just short against big city Rangers”.It’s been 16 years since we won a playoff round and I am not into moral victories!
-
Move or no move we will keep the teams memories alive … We will always be Islander Fans. It’s what brings us together as a community. The coliseum is a place where strangers can hug one another and cheer when something great happens on the ice. Once and Islander, always an Islander!
-
Does it say something about Ranger fans the name they kept chanting was “Avery”? Anybody watch the MSG broadcasters to see if they took any shots Avery like they did last fall? Like the Yankee Old Timer game in the 1990s when Joe Pepitone got a louder ovation than Joe DiMaggio.
I sure hope THe Wanger likes Kansas City.
-
Pritchet 160 and everyone else, aren’t you tired of fielding a minor league team? Especially vs. NYR!! It seems the last 10 games vs. NYR the NYI has been mostly the Bridgeport S Tigers. When does the joke end?
-
Whether we get Tavares or Hedman, this team needs to sign at least two young UFA forwards, players who are young enough so they will still be around and be part of the solution in a few years. Two forward versions of Mark Streit, if you will. My concern is that we’re going to get next year’s versions of Bill Guerin–37-38 year olds who are over the hill.
-
great effort from the isles, enjoyed most of it. Isles taking the body like crazy, avery taken out of the game. Joensuu looks good if he can pack on some weight would help.Didn’t think Martinek was that bad aside from let in goal. Ice surface looked like poo tonight with everyone slippin and slidin. sad we didn’t get the win but we want to win last place anyway.
-
I believe twelve of the twenty Islanders dressed tonight either started or spent huge chunks of time last year in the minors–or were not even in professional hockey. But they came to play.
-
officiating was horrible. i dont understand why so few complain about that fact. we just accept it and it become a self fulfilling pro faz cy. kids need to step it up more, okposo plays so well but is absent from the scoring sheet for a while now. i saw a shot late in the third that went in behind queen henry and it was waved off and apparently not reviewed at the next break. did anyone else see that goal? why was there no review?
-
I was at the game in my usual seats and thought that the Isles outplayed the Rangers for large parts of the game. Comeau and Hillen were terrific. High point of my game was Hunter drilling A-Hole into the boards from behind knocking him stupid-er for a few minutes. Wrecker impressed me. He’s more than marginally better than Fritz as a player. He’s a ways from being NHL ready, but he’s got some skill. I thought the Isles showed the nucleus of a pretty good team to build around. I not only hope we resign Weight, I’d like to keep McAmmond as well. We need a few vets, especially one who can win a faceoff. Sorry for the ramble.
-
Is it bad that I wanted to literally hit Rangers fans that were chanting Kansas City and got into two verbal exchanges?
I need conseuling.
-
I just got back from the game, as well. DC23 and TM, I think you are exactly correct. This was a pathetic effort by this franchise. The game was not that close, the Rangers never in jeopardy of losing. They were fitting in new players that even Torts said after the game would take a week or two before they understood their roles in his system, yet they still beat the Isles easily. Every Islanders shift had a minimum of three rookies on the ice at any given time. Embarrassing.
Personally, the most obnoxious Rags-Isles game I’ve been to the past 20+ years. Saw my friend who I took to the game get into a prolonged yelling match with the guy sitting next to him less than 5 minutes in. Kansas City chants throughout the game. Actually looked like one of the chants chased Wang and Dey out of the box right after the 4th goal. All the Potvin cheers in the concourse on the way out. Actually had some drunk yahoos taunt me a mile in their pickup up Hempstead Turnpike, just because they saw my Isles jersey in the back seat. We were dominated on the ice, in the stands, in the parking lots, on the way home.
Did the kids play hard? Maybe. Were they good enough. No. Will have of them be eventually good enough. Maybe. Will this minor league team still be wanting with Tavares next season. Absolutely.
-
Oh yeah and Swan too. Nothing bad to say about Blake Comeau tonight, huh?
-
DC23, I hear you brother. However at least this team is a team of youth that WILL stay together and be here for better days. Im not in love with moral victories but there is a different ending then the milbury days I feel.
-
damn Swan sleep it off.sorry about gettin heckled, and the poopy chants from the Rags. I’m sure it is enough to drive u crazy. At least the rags will be clowned out in the first round again with an overpayed underachiever.
-
Size, speed, and toughness should be the criteria used to draft, trade, and sign UFA. They played well tonight but the team is still way too small. I’m also concerned about Witt just not being the right guy in this system. If you notice, they play a much more fluid game when he isn’t in there
-
toorude, I was sitting right behind the goal too and I and everyone in my row thought it was a goal. I would have to imagine that if it was, they would have whistled down after the next stoppage.
-
Comeau arguably had his best game tonight and deserves credit for it. And that is because he did some things he should do more of which is drive to the net.
I would wait before labeling him an all-star.
5 goals/11 assist playing on the 2nd line. I stand by his numbers, or lack thereof.
-
Watch the kids ,see who is improving. Once this season is over the Islanders can really start moving forward, the worst should be behind us.All the Islanders cap room is going to be very valuable, maybe not this summer but especially if the cap goes down a lot in 2 years.
-
So who was arguing with me that martinek is the worst 2on1 D in the league? Goalie got the puck D has the man martinek does a spin o rama in the middle and they still score! Btw does it seem like neilsan is completely outa gas? Maybe he needs a few days off
-
mikef, I happen to be a big Martinek fan and think he has been hugely underrated the past few years. But your right, this was not one of his best games. A poor off-night for him.
-
isles316 – do they have to review? maybe b/c its the islanders – then the Toronto braintrust blows it off – why not? goes right in line with the officiating. its getting old. i saw elbows up high and hands clutching that were just ignored by refs. it seems like nobody cares, isles, gordon, snow, wang – so i could see them passing on the review.
-
toorude, id be shocked if up in Toronto or the off ice officials missed that if it did go in. Or purposely over looked it. Not enough people really flipped out though behind the net down there for me to really think that it went it. However, from where I was it disappeared for far too long and then bounced out for it to be a post i thought.
-
I hope we finish last by 1 point and the Rangers fans feel like they gave us Taveras. We could have won the game tonight and I’m hoping eventually Ranger fans wish we swept the season series this year cause Taveras is terrorizing them.
-
Madchef, lol. I am definitely still wound up. Disappointed by the loss to the Rags, embarrassed for the Islanders that had to play an away game in their own building, wired from the three near fistfights my friend and I got into with Ranger idiots.
I’ll feel much better tomorrow morning.
-
everyone in my row including ranger fans said it was in. sec 311. i would like to hear from someone that saw a replay. it was not a post.
-
171 – its been 16 years and their have been some beyond belief bad times but I like to believe there is a God and somehow, someday we will be rewarded for our loyalty.
My first memory as an Islander fan was watching the Oilers celebrate their first cup and the end of the drive for five…I texted my buddy the other day we deserve sainthood for following this team…but we’ll never learn, we’re off to Chi town next weekend to see the boys play the Hawks.
BTW-2 goals for Tavares tonight.
-
JJ has imprested me the last two games. He crashes the net, has some good moves, hits and is a big guy. I think that he is going to have a very bright future in the NHL
-
Man it really looks like Bailey is regressing as the year goes on. He just wasn’t physically ready to take on an 82 game season. 1 assist in the last 13 games.
-
cb, we need some info on the abomination that is the goal song. its just noise, no rhythm to sing along to or way to unite fans.
i guess i can understand the reason to scrap the previous(and extremely popular) song, but come on, we can do better then what we have now.
any thoughts out there web?
-
What is the relationship between Rechlicz and Naslund?
-
eye (199)
I hate to say it but the Ranger goal song is one of the best out there…..although I hate the rangers, you gotta give them due with their goal song.
personally I think they should play zombie nation….the new song does suck.
-
I say we just bring back the hey song. Apparently, the guy doesn’t even get royalties from the song anymore.
-
First Ranger fans are the most classless, clueless fans I’ve ever been around, worse than Red Sox fans.
Second, Jesse Joensuu must stay, this kid has alot of potential, send him back for the AHL playoffs, but keep him up for now, I’m really impressed
-
I hate the Rangers so much. Their fans are sooooo stupid and immature, it’s unbelievable….a little while ago some Rangers fan sat next to me, and, although he agreed Sather sucks and has signed a lot of losers, that Snow is just as bad….and that Streit sucks….typical Rangers crap. Maybe they should move to Kansas City, life would be so much simpler.
-
Is it safe to say Radik is the most overrated “underrated” player in the league? Not a bad effort for a minor league team. Wang you might get some more support for you pipe dream house project if you actually put a decent product on the ice.
-
glad we lost and played well…its great were playing well and great we got closer to last place!
-
I won’t debate Hunter needed a penalty for the hit or not. I just would like to know how the Rangers can jump him, force play to stop, wrestle him to the ice and a huge pile up ensues and NO ONE FROM THE RANGERS GOES TO THE BOX?
-
Nick wrote a good update on what Wang had to say on the pre-game: http://lettherebelighthouse.blogspot.com/
-
Stamkos was scatched for a few games by Tampa and it seems to have done him some good. The Islanders should do the same with Bailey but they may not have enough bodies available to fill the line-up.
-
Comeau looked real good last night. I think he’s going to be solid on our team for a long long time
-
Thought the Isles played a very spirited game. I really like the way Jesse has played- this kid is gonna be good. What happened to Comeau last night? He was on fire, hitting everything in site. Overall, I am very pleased with their effort and despite the loss- I AM AN ISLANDER (FAN)!
-
I’m just glad this team progressing and progressing faster than I expected it to. They were awful 2/3 of the season for the most part but last 10 games with satbilized roster of a players who are fit to a Go-Go System the results are very transparent. Not in a Win/Loss department but Quality. Tavares or bust. We need scoring more than defence IMHO.
-
We gave the Isles an “atta boy!” pat on the back for the last Rangers game they lost. It’d be nice if they could actually beat them. The goal in the first minute of the third killed them last night.
Of note, the Rangers will make the playoffs this year largely on the back of the 10 points they took from the Isles in the season series.
That said, Tambellini was one of the best forwards for the Isles. Skated hard to those tough areas I’ve always said he refuses to skate to, and he didn’t even pull up to avoid contact. He’s played tougher in the last two games now…hopefully it’s the start of a trend. I wish we could combine Bergy’s overall play with Tambs’ shot…
-
I love how Boomer Esiason on his radio show talks about how great Ragger fans are. How loyal and die hard they are. But not ONCE does he mention the junk they spew forth at these games and how awful his fellow “die hards” act.
Fellow Isles fans, are you really surprised? I’ve been going to games at Nassau since 1988 and they have always been the same. They have some sort of arrogance as if their one pathetic, bought Cup means something. You faithful who were at last nights game say they act like clowns?
Remember folks, these were the same “classless and disgusting” Ragger fans who, when Pat LaFontaine was knocked unconscious and had to be put into an ambulance, there the Ragger fans were, ROCKING THE AMBULANCE and not letting it leave!Forget Red Sox fans. Ragger fans are the true low-lifes of sports.
Here’s the chant, people: ONE SINCE FORTY!
-
I stopped going to the games against the Rags because I hated how it seemed like we were “outnumbered” in our own building.
The Rag fans should be pissed. With all of the money they spent, all of the talent on the team, they are still on the bubble. And as much as I cant stand Lundy—he is the only reason they are even in the playoff picture.
They can chant “Kansas City” all they want—but at the end of the day, if any Rangers fan had even a peanut-sized brain, they would realize that keeping the NY Islanders where they are benefits them.
If I were a Rangers fan, I would be pretty quiet right now. My $50 million team is looking more like a bust every day. Sure they may make the playoffs, but I cant see them getting very far. There blueline is lackluster, and they have not been a scoring team.
I thought our boys completely outplayed them last night. They got damn lucky on the goal off Martinek’s stick, and the play by Jackman. I also felt the trip call that lead to the Rags second goal was a joke, not to mention several missed calls by the officials that could have and should have been called in favor of the Isles.
All that aside, we should be proud of how we played. A soild game all around. Bergy continues to show his skills, Comeau had a great night, and I think Joensuu belongs here until the end of the year. He is using his size—something we really need—and he has learned his lesson of driving to the front of the net. I also felt Tambellini had a good night. Hillen looked solid as well.
The future does not look so bad folks.
-
yes Nassau coloseum was filled with rag fans. its fine man. its happend before. When we get John Tavares, startw inning some gmes next year there will be less seat available for them.
I though isles played great. the few mistakes we made we did pay for them.
Henrik was difference. if Hilbert, Bergie, or Okpsos scored on there chances in first period it woud of been different game. Rangers are going nowhere.
As much as i like gomez and drury bother around worth 7MM+ they getting. Redden is horrid, and getting Morris was waste. Morris had one good year. I think Kalinen might be better than him straight up.
Wow 4-2 win Rags vs Bridgeport Soundtigers. Lets see how the fair with Healthy DP, sutton and WItt back on Defense. and Park and Weight playing again.
While i like the youth movement, you still need some vets in mix.
Tambellini is lost causse. He has amazing wrister and thats it. Has no puck vision and has not clue where to go on ice.
-
Hey Vukota,
Wrecker at least can skate and play, wouldnt mind having him in lineup again. woud of loved to see him fight ORR. -
Their fans and the media act like the Rag$ are hockey’s version of the Yankees. It’s bizzarre. I could easily craft an argument that aside from the Jets, they are the most pathetic pro franchise in the New York area. All those years when there were merely 6 teams in the league, with 4 of the 6 making the playoffs, and they won squat between 1940 and 1994. How do they maintain their fan base and how pathetic is our fan base?
-
its easy, rag fan fanbase was non-existent before they won in 1994.
Same will happen when isles start winning. dont worry. You get a players like JT, a healthy DP and a few wins next year, You’ll see attendance go up plenty.
-
Rags are like Knicks right now. Spend Spend Spend and nothing to show for it.
-
I am happy with the way Wrecker played last night. I wouldnt say he is NHL ready of course, but in a pinch when there are injuries or a team where you think you might need some extra size and punch? He is definitely worth a call up. In a couple of years, I think that the Islanders will get a helluva good enforcer out of this kid… and if he keeps up this PPG pace, wow lol! Seriously though- I think he might even wind up along the skillset of Chris Simon (and FWIW I mean that as a COMPLIMENT- a guy who can fight but can ALSO skate and play the game!) I am psyched for him, I really am. Keep working with Cairns whenever you can, Joel- and talk to Jackman about how he improved his skating!
-
Rechlicz looked good last night. He could skate much better than Fritz. Drove to the net real well. Have to agree with CB. They really did look good except for Jackman’s play. Played a hard nose game.
-
To all you people here that are hating on “goons” and on Rechlicz: Give it a rest. Fighting has been part of hockey forever. Its not going anywhere, no matter how badly you want it to.
As far as Rechlicz goes, I thought he played okay last night. He hit lots of people but didn’t do anything stupid. He did his job. He was out there keeping the Rags honest, letting them know that they couldn’t take liberties with our younger players without ramifications. That’s what enforcers are there for. That game last night was hard and clean because Rechlicz and Orr were in the lineup.
Enforcers are necessary in the NHL to protect players because guys don’t respect one another. You see it all over the league. Cheap shot after cheap shot. The Islanders are going to be a young and small team for the forseeable future. They have to find an enforcer to protect the younger players while they develop, whether its Rechlicz or someone else.
-
Hyedray (215): I equate Rag fans to Red Sox fans: they act as if their team is royalty and they have this great tradition, yet have nothing to base that feeling on. Rag fans act as if the Rags are the best franchise in the sport and that all other franchises are inferior. Yet the Rags are the least successful original six franchise and are not even the most successful franchise in the metropolitan area. Both the Isles and Devils have better track records as far as number of championships won as compared to years of existence.
Rag fans are arrogant and blinded by ignorance to the reality that their team has been rather dismal over their history. With all the troubles the Isles have had over the past 15 years, the Rags haven’t been that much better. Sather and Co. ran that team into the ground for years. They too missed the playoffs for seven straight seasons. Sather also fired and hired five coaches in nine seasons. It was not until the lockout forced the Rags to build a team as opposed to buy one that they turned it around.
The Rangers, generally, have a miserably arrogant and ignorant fan base. You’d think fans that cheered for a team that has had the lack of success the Rags have had over the past 70 or so years would be a little more humble, but they’re not. Just like Sox fans.
-
GAS MD (183): Bailey should have been sent back to junior after nine games. I don’t think keeping him up here killed his development, but he’s clearly not ready to be an everyday NHL player. We’ll see what happens with him next season.
-
Swan 181: Its the Isles’ fans own fault that opposing teams’ fans get to the games and dominate the building. That’s how it goes when you only get 9,000 or so fans to your games. Tons of extra seats gobbled up by the filth of humanity, Rag fans.
I wasn’t there last night, but I remember going to the Isles/Habs game earlier in the year. The one that the Isles blew in the third. That game was my worst experience at the Coliseum. Thousands of Habs fans. Loud, arrogant, obnoxious. They completely took over the building. It felt as if the game was in Montreal.
Until the Isles’ fans start going back to the games and buying these tickets, Rag fans will always be able to take the place over. Hopefully, that will happen sooner rather than later.
-
jethro,
i was at last nights game as well as that game against montreal and its sad. But what can you expect.Isles fans are loyal as they get. I get ripped on by my non-isle fan friends saying the same old YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN REBUILDING FOR 15 YRS. we all know that is not true. yes we drafted but we never let our team mature, Instead of draftee are all over the NHL making a splash.
If we draft Tavares, and DP is healthy, i can see nice jump in attendance next year. If are winning team it wont be long before whole place is fill up again.
Rebuild is finally underway.
-
226
I was at that game as well. The Montreal fans were being d bags. They started chanting “Lets Go Rangers”. Lowest of the low.
There were more than a few people who i wanted to brawl with at that game. It’s one thing to go into an opposing building and support your team, but it’s another thing to openly taunt your the HOME TEAMS’ FANS. These frog fans can take their centennial year and stick it as far as i”m concerned.
-
I just hope isles can Mirror what Philly did a few years ago. They dumped their team. stocked up on picks. signed a good few free agents and made it back into playoffs.
Im not saying we can win a cup in next 2 year but we sure can make a splash and compete.
Rangers one last night b/c Lundquist played great. 3 of the 4 goals were result of good bounces or minor mistakes by the Isles.
-
I dont think we are in bad shape at all next year. Only players we need to resign if we need them to play again are Jackman, Hilbert, and Weight if bring him back. we gained 10.8MM just from not having guerin, comrie, sillinger back. thaty can buy you some nice players in Free agency. Plus you get DP back. its time to bring in Colliton and give him regular shift.
Add John Tavares and suddenly got a pretty nice team.
Some UFA names for thought in my opinion:
Komiserek, Afinogenov, Gaborik, Cole, Moss(calgary), Havlat, Jason Williams, Perrin, Franzen, Bowmeester, Antropov, Cammilleri and Sedins. -
Just hope we have a team you heard the Wanger yesterday! If it doesn’t get approved by the summer it won’t matter.
-
would that be depressing. drafting John Tavares then losing team b/c town of hempstead didnt want to approve it.
What does it matter if Wang has to get funding after. thats his problem not the towns. He is paying for it.
100acres of wasteland is 100 of waste land. At least create a buzz, jobs and place people enjoy. Obama and his adminstration already taken the market into the crapper already.
Take away my favorite sports team and really get depressed.
-
I hope the lighthouse gets done. I want to see this team in the coming years. I was at the game and the way they played I was happy to say i’m an Islander fan. That had to be the best performance in a long time.
-
Kansas City wants the Isles, but they are in danger of losing the Chiefs and Royals:

The Wrecker’s in Town. Should be fun.
