    Danis deserves some rest….LOL

  2. 2 Pritchett54

Can we start Eric Fishaud in the Tampa Bay 4 point game april 4th?

  3. 3 Coach B

Give Mannino another start when the Islanders play their game against Tampa Bay. Why not?

  4. 4 19 Isle in NJ 22

CB ~ I think the Isles are trying to keep the Goalies’ Union happy … rest Danis and give Mannino a look to see if he improved … The Isles are very sensitive to the goalie situation being both the Coach and GM are former goalies. Should they lose both Danis and MacDonald in FA, they will need to have a good look at Mannino. Well … that is how I’d write it up anyway. ;)

  5. 5 doc

It’s not like they’ve traded or waived all veterans and have gone completely with youth and inexperienced players… ;)

I don’t have a problem starting Mannino. Even if the Islanders were not chasing the No.1 pick (but out of the playoff picture like Ottawa), this is the time to evaluate and provide experience to prospects. They do it in other sports. Baseball expands their rosters in Sept of each year. Baseball teams out of the playoff picture, begin playing their minor league prospects. But because the Islanders have a possibility of grabbing the No 1 draft pick, their suppose to stop evaluating thier prospects? Doesn’t make sense?

  7. 7 rb

for Peter Mannino, who maybe doesn’t care quite as much about the first overall pick, this might be a pretty big deal, getting a start against a good Blackhawks team in Chicago…he probably sees this as an opportunity to prove he might have a future in the NHL

  8. 8 EdTurner

    A) Mannino deserves a chance to play

    B) Both Snow & Gordon keep saying this is the time to see what we have (i.e., let the kids play)

    C) Playing one goalie non-stop is one of Gordons biggest flaws as a coach

    D) I miss the organ in the old Chicago Stadium

  9. 9 Tom

Losing is key. Anything that brings them closer to a loss is a good move. I believe Mannino presents the best chance to lose, hopefully he has a lousy game. If he does ride Mannino as long as he stinks. He shows ANY signs of playing well, bench him.

  10. 10 Jon #2

Get rid of the bad apples!

  11. 11 Pat

Mannino should play - we have an opportunity to evaluate him in an NHL game. Let’s see what he’s got.

Its not like we are going to start him 10 times the rest of the year - but this kid deserves a shot at a game. Look how Tampa has had three goalies who have played at least 9 games this year. Lets get a look at Mannino - the team will play well in front of him. Lets see what he has.

  12. 12 ISLESFAN999

I would play Maninno at least 5 games and try and get him a win and 4 loses!!

  13. 13 michael

its not about rooting for the islanders to lose, we need to root for tampa and atlanta to WIN!!

  14. 14 isles316

Mannino vs the Hawks could be ugly but we shall see.

  15. 15 joey303

Look at the Isles schedule for the last 13. I can only find 4 possible wins. However, one of them would be against Tampa. I say, have Tampa win both Thrasher games in OT, then the Isles would surely be the 30th seed. Love the way they are competing, but Im sure we all want to root for the 30th seed.
Go Peter Mannino !! 5-4 Hawks, Tambs first 2 goal game :)

  16. 16 bergie20

i really hope we have the same result as yesterday - a hard fought one goal regulation loss. putting mannino in there increases the odds of a regulation loss which is good, but i also want to see what he can do. i’m sure nyi does too. yesterday was a great day in the tavheduch chase. let’s not lose any momentum in that. btw - who made this bizarro world schedule?

  17. 17 Jim

Since we have no control over any of this I say let them play whoever and hope the Islanders, Bolts, Thrashers, & AVs all keep wining. Personally I like looking at the new players. Every one of them that has played has shown well which bodes well for the future of the franchise . . . talent wise anyways

  18. 18 john

The Isles should definitely let Mannio have a few games but, is J. MacDonald out for the remainder of the year? I think there ae 5 back to back games left including today so, I see Danis getting 8 or 9 more games and the rest going to whoever is that nights backup, MacDonald or Mannio.

  19. 19 drew

How many games can your play Mannino before people accuse the Isles of tanking?

  20. 20 mm30

i’m here in chicago getting ready for the game…not so excited to see mannino play but lets see.

Hawks are going to be up for this one, I went to friday nights game and Huet was horrible.

  21. 21 Obs

Mannino’s 1st NHL game? This team is going to play real hard for this kid. The D-men are going to be playing hard and lock down the front of the net. Remember, for the most part, this whole team is youngsters and they will work their butts off to get this kid a win.

  22. 22 Jon

It’s called passive tanking. Make subtle moves like giving Mannino the game when you have the whole week off, maybe rest a banged up player with an upper body injury, etc. But…you ALWAYS demand that the guys on the ice play to win.

  23. 23 Obs

Talk about tanking it? Anyone remember how Pitt. tanked it to get Lemieux? That is why we have the current draft formula. 83′-84′ season I believe

  24. 24 coral springs isle fan

What does Gordon say to Danis after yesterday’s game? Congratulations Yann; you are playing so well that we are going to need to bench you for tomorrow’s game. Unless you are prepared to lose 2-1 for the remainder of your career we really need to draft Tavares so we can score some goals next year for you!

  25. 25 FIsles

If Mannino gets to start, it might also be because of the unfortunate situation he was put in late in a game earlier this season when the team was getting shelled. Mannino’s confidence clearly took a hit, and he eventually had to drop down to the ECHL to get his game back together. Now he might have a chance to improve his numbers and avoid having that .625 save percentage tarring his stats for the rest of his life. You never know if he’d ever get another chance to fix it otherwise, or even get the chance to play in this league again. If I’m Gordon, I’m giving Mannino the chance to play a game for that reason alone. Ultimately stats are cosmetic, but under the circumstances it would be right to give the guy a chance to stop a few pucks.

Nathan Lawson apparently has an injury, so now Bridgeport has Utah’s Mike Mole backing up BP’s other ECHL goalie.

  26. 26 Tom

#23 - I agree. Passive tanking. There’s no doubt garth is getting nervous about the Isles recent play, he needs to show he still knows how to lose without embarrassing himself too much. Hopefully Mannino stinks & he gets have 5 or 6 crappy starts in a row. That would solidify the tank job. IF mannino begins to show signs he can stop the puck, he’ll be benched.

Even garth’s IQ is high to tank a season. He can do this. 30th place is right in Snow’s wheelhouse. Whether it’s GMing or even as a player vying for a #1 starter position, Garth knows how to lose. Finishing 2nd in a two man race or finishing 30th in a 30 team race, consistently losing is what makes garth special.

  27. 27 Alex Kinkead

Isn’t his GAA at like 16 from that game he played in? If it is and I was a Blackhawks fan at the game I would lmao when I saw that.

  28. 28 Ray

    (21) This will be Mannino’s first NHL START. He’s already played a game this season in Boston. He came in for MacDonald who gave up 4 first period goals. Mannino didn’t fair any better.

  29. 29 Nick

#24 it’s simple, you tell Danis that it’s a back to back and they want to see what this kid mannino can do.

  30. 30 isles316

Yea, you can’t have Danis play every game. I think when MacDonald played 18? or so games in a row it did him an injustice. It hurt him.

I dont think you can force Danis to play every game. The Isles have been good this year also about getting everyone from Bridgeport that has played well there a shot up here. So why not stop with Mannino.

  31. 31 Alex Kinkead

    Mannino’s GAA is 13.81!

  32. 32 nystrom23

Ps everyone when is the actual lottery

  33. 33 Drew

Agree 100% with Joe Riverside’s #6 post. This is the time when teams that are out of the hunt (and have been for some time) start to evaluate their prospects and see who’s got a decent shot at a future NHL career.

Denis has been outstanding and now we know what we’ve got. Mac played his ass off for us as well. At least I feel comfortable knowing that the backup goaltenders job should be in competent hands (provided we sign Denis) Lets see what mannino brings to ther table and what, if anything, he has to offer the franchise moving forward.

  34. 34 Drew

My bad, I spelled Danis’ name as Denis. I have a friend who is named Denis and that person’s spelling was on the brain. I am a bad Islander fan :)

  35. 35 miket

with our luck mannino pitches a shutout today.

  36. 36 Will C

Everyone, Mannino is getting an NHL start for a reason, if he was a talentless hack he would be named Hextall. This may just charge the guys up to get a fellow kid a win. A loss would be nice( In regulation) though.

  37. 37 DC23

Piere McGuire givin Isles some luv for the great signing of Mark Streit. Milbury looked like his head was gonna pop off his face was so red!

  38. 38 coolhndluke

Man Tom-#26, did Garth steal your wife or pee in your corn flakes? Give it a rest

  39. 39 Shoe

Tom (9) - I am with you. In a draft like this one, get the worst record and you are guaranteed a #1 overall quality player. hit the jackpot and you get a franchise forward, consolation is a franchise calibre dman. Didn’t realize that hedman is 6′6. Organizationally, dmen seem to be in more demand for the isles than forwards so worst record equals jackpot.

Why any isles fan would be rooting for wins at this point, when it is clearly not in the best interests of the team, is beyond me.

  40. 40 Ed J

    HA!! DC23 I saw that too….

Why does Milbury hate the Islanders SOOO much???

  41. 41 Pat

I can’t root for the Isles to lose, even though it’s in their best interests for them to do so. But I can root for everone else to win also. Atlanta has won 5 in a row. Tampa and Phoenix scare me.

  42. 42 nickystix

whats with this Egg Levine re-air. this is the third time ive seen this

  43. 43 coolhndluke

What a joke this Islander production team is, does anyone really care about this arrogant ass “Egg” Levine? Do they really have to air this nightmare during the last 2 pre games, between periods last week X 2? To top it off this moron is a Rag fan and goes as far to call us Icelanders. Sad just low rent.

  44. 44 Beaker

they keep showing the egg piece cuz he’s the next isles goalie if another one of ours goes down

  45. 45 Islanders1984

When does he say the icelanders thing. Did goring here it?

  46. 46 Nick

    i hate egg levine

  47. 47 DC23

Agree with everyone on these re-runs of the Egg Levine piece. I guess MSG has given up on this season even though the Isles haven’t!

  48. 48 Pat

Egg must be a Steve Somers fan. I was livid when he called us “Icelanders” - he is a chump who Goring took it easy on.

Think his beloved Rag$ would put him on television? a big SO WHAT is what I say….I would have left Egg Head Levine on the cutting room floor. WASTE OF MY TIME to have that on tv….oh wait -the RAG$ own the tv station and no wonder it made it on - shame on the Isles for not cutting that part (Icelanders) out.

Next thing you know - Newsday - the RAG owned paper - will be making Egg Head Levine get the cover. Sorry CB, I resent people dissing our team .

Good afternoon, everyone. Not that nice a day on the Island, so a nice time to pull up a chair and Stewart’s cream soda and watch the Islanders in Chicago. I’m around if anyone wants to chat…CB

  50. 50 john

I wish I could have heard that piece on NBC, w/ McGuire and Milbury. I was out for lunch and saw it but the sound wasn’t on. Why is Milbury on these shows, he’s such a loser.

  51. 51 d-man

    john: let it go already

  52. 52 Danpooch

Is it me or did CJ Papa have one too many last night. Chicago strippers are so hot!!!!!

  53. 53 Islanders1984

How does the lottery system play out as far as the % go. does last get that much greater of a % then 2nd to last

  54. 54 MT

Bergie out for two weeks according to Howie, would it even be worth it for him to come back after that?

  55. 55 Richie66

How ironic that Milbury was talking about all the bad trades that were made recently

  59. 59 ronny

with 5 days off…..and the other teams all playing 2 games this week. lets forget the taveduche watch and just root for the team today. Im a firm believer tavares will be here anyway regardless.

  60. 60 Islanders1984

    Thanks for the lotto info

  61. 61 Pat

Hey CB, If we wind up with the 2nd overall pick is it automtic that we pick Hedman or could we go after Duchene. I hear that for his size Hedman plays a little soft.

  62. 62 Islanders1984

Ronny I’m not even a firm beliver Isles will be taking Tavares if they get the 1st pick

  63. 63 admin

Pat (61) Who said Hedman will still be there at 2? CB

  64. 64 Patrick

It would be very hard to find a bigger ranger$ hater than me. For example,my whole Sunday is ruined now thanks to the Flyers. But Sommers is a great listen. I HATED him way back when, but I realized that his whole mission is to fire us up with his pompous condescension, if you just laugh at his act it’s funny. At least to me.

  65. 65 Richie66

If Isles win lottery and get to pick #1, choosing Tavares and then trying to sign either Komisarek or JayBo would be a HUGE turnaround

  66. 66 Islanders1984

CB since you don’t think Hedman could be there at 2, How would you break it down as far as the teams in the Taveheduch watch. Who would be more likely to take Hedman over tavares

  67. 67 admin

Assuming rosters stay the same, there’s a chance Tampa Bay, Phoenix and the Islanders could take Hedman at No. 1. Again, I say a CHANCE.

For anyone to come on here, as one reader did last night, and kill anyone for saying it’s a possibility because HE declares 100% Tavares is going No. 1 and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot….well, that’s without any merit…CB

  68. 68 Mike

Blackhawks are just knocking the Isles all over the place. It looks like men against boys out there.

  69. 69 Pat

Good point CB, I’d love Tavares to be available if we pick second but don’t think that would happen. We need a sniper in the worst way. Would love to go after a big physical d-man in free agency - Komi. With Tavares up front and Komi back on D, and the rest of the kids coming on, I’d be very happy with that.

  70. 70 John C

CB, any word on the Isles new jerseys? I believe you said someone went to PBN night to answer questions pertaining to them and give more clarity as to what their plan is with them. Thanks

  71. 71 Dave

I wouldn’t want to get Hedman, personally. A big defenseman who isn’t very physical is not nearly as important as a superstar center who can pass and score.

  72. 72 rob

People have to understand that both J.T and V.H are world class talent players. Who knows if they will showcase that talent and potential in the NHl. I would think so. But in the event that we do not land either of them ( still possible isles fans), we have to understand that Matt Duchene, Evander Kane, and a few others can be VITAL parts of the turn around and rebuild. Will Tavares and Hedman speed things up, provide a few more wins/excitement for next year. Sure as hell they will. But if they are not drafted by us, the rebuild WILL go on. Things will get better. Lets not put all our hopes into these guys.

who am i kidding we need them in the worst way.

  73. 73 bergie20

mannino looks great so far. chicago really likes to throw the open ice checks, which you don’t see much anymore. i wouldn’t be disapointed at all if the isles took hedman at 1. he’s an amazing talent.

  74. 74 dally mac

Jeez I find the Isles pretty tight defensively in front of Mannino. All shots seem to be from the outside. Any Bridgeport news lately?

  75. 75 Ryan

CB - Let’s say the Lighthouse project doesn’t happen…can I remain hopeful that the isles might actually end up in Queens, or is this just more hot air? We all want them to remain on the Island, but at this point, I’d feel relieved just to know they aren’t off to Kansas City.

  76. 76 Matt

I hope that is at least an option Ryan.

  77. 77 admin

    (70) John C: My contact on the Islanders uniform issue was a late scratch on PB Night. I’ll write all I know about it tomorrow, after I confirm a few details…CB

  78. 78 dist1ump

Any word on McLeans leg injury?

  79. 79 Joe

    Mannino looks great.

  80. 80 Ryan

CB - If the Isles do get Tavares, would he be a lock to make the roster next season?

  81. 81 admin

    (80) Yes…CB

  82. 82 drew

    CB,

Do you think the Islanders still believe that DP will be able to play 60+ games?

  83. 83 patrick

cb - i had emailed you but didnt hear back, so i”ll ask here. who is running against kate murray in nov.?

    thx

  84. 84 Islanders1984

CB what about Hedman would he be a lock on the roster next year as well

  85. 85 Jimmy Sparx

Park and Dilbert on the pp……lol. That for sure will not be happening next season.

  86. 86 Ryan

interesting that Tavares would be a lock to make the roster…we saw with Stamkos this year that this isn’t always the easiest decision. That being said, from what we hear of Tavares, I’d pretty much expect him to be the Isles leading point-getter next year even as a rookie.

  87. 87 Matt

    Why is it happening now?

  88. 88 admin

    (82) Same answer for every question about Rick DiPietro. No one - including the Islanders - has any way of knowing…CB

  89. 89 Pat

    2 man addvantage, lets go

  90. 90 Jimmy Sparx

    Who’s Rick DiPietro??????

  91. 91 DC23

    CB:

All we keep hearing is that this team is so close, but that’s the second time Nielsen took a shot to the head (the 1st being Motteau) and nobody comes to his defense? They had 5 games to get back at Motteau and did nothing. Maybe they arent as close as we think or maybe nobody is willing to take a few punches to stick up for a teammate? As someone who played for 20 years this really bothers me!

  92. 92 Eye on the island

Called the democratic party of Nassau on Thursday. Was told they have their nominating convention this may.

  93. 93 Jimmy Sparx

That is your Captain next season…

    MARK STREIT!!!!!!!!

  94. 94 walter

my favorite penalty delay of game puck over glass

  95. 95 Ryan

I don’t think we should have a captain next season. Let’s wait a couple of years until someone is officially ready. Kind of like what the Yankees did with Jeter…by the time they officially named him captain, everyone KNEW he was the captain.

  96. 96 Devon

    What a save by Petey!

  97. 97 Pat

Everybody wanted Mannino to play. Sure loss, now what.

  98. 98 MickeyBoy7

The real question about DP is will he play 60 games over the course of his contract?

  99. 99 Mike

Andy Gilbert should be banned from all powerplay units. Horrible. Someone else besides streit needs to shoot a puck. Mannino is playing unbelievably. Defense looks old and slow to pick up the blackhawk attack. Just some thoughts.

  100. 100 Ryan

Forgetting whether DP will even play 60 more games of his contract, I’m still not convinced that he’s anything more than a decent goalie who goes on very hot and very cold streaks. I still hold out hope that he’ll pull it all together because the talent is definitely there.

  101. 101 Jimmy Sparx

Word is that Streit has become one of the more vocal players in the lockroom. He has 4 more years after this season.

    Too bad for Petey

  102. 102 Joe

Pock needs to be gone, he sucks. Callahan should be up instead of this clown.

  103. 103 Devon

That’s the kind of goal I like to see.

  104. 104 isles316

    Ryan #100. I’m with you.

    (84) If Hedman plays in North America next year, yes. He’s already playing in a great league against veterans and doing extremely well…CB

    What a PERIOD!
This team is contending for the cup next year, I’m calling it.

  112. 112 Ryan

Look at these guys winning again lol…at least we can’t gain any more points until Friday

  113. 113 Jimmy Sparx

Devon……. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet :)

  114. 114 NickyL

I did NOT expect this game to go this way so far. Wow.

  115. 115 patrick

i repeat, they are not finishing last.

gordon better figure out how to slow them down. big picture!

  116. 116 Mike Olivo

Does go-go read this blog on his phone during game? No Hilbert on last PP, and poof a goal. They finally seem to be adjusting to the hail mary passes chicago is throwing all over. Finally, can we clone Mark Streit 5 times?

  117. 117 Priest

Where can I get a tie like Gordon’s?

  118. 118 Jimmy Sparx

As a coach you can not ask your players to tank the rest of the way. This group is showing ways to win and I said this many times, you sometimes need your goalie to steal wins for you and recently the goalies have done this.

I want that #1 pick just like everyone else, it is a must, but these kids are so fun to watch.

Again, Streit you be named Captain next season.

  119. 119 joey303

Being Italian, it was classic to watch Mannino’s mom react to a great save. Good for the kid. Now go out and give up 3 deflections :)

  120. 120 Ryan

if anyone is interested, ESPN.com has an article on Tavares right now that has a bit of Isles content. Basically, Tavares says he would definitely come to the Island, and would be excited to help turn the team around. He speaks of Trottier and Bossy, and the need for a new arena. Short article, but the kid said all the right things.

  121. 121 Mike Olivo

Priest, I want a tie like that as well. Islanders business gear, could be the next money maker. I wonder if Don Cherry will license his orange suit to us and we can sell that too.

  122. 122 Chickendirt

    Here’s a funny thought.

Doesn’t it feel like Streit should have like 100pts right now?

I swear, I feel like when I look at his point totals that he has a couple of assists hidden under the mattress. This guy just keeps amassing multiple point games and when you see has 51pts it’s almost like he should have more.

Great season by this guy. Those guys in Montreal must feel like huge dopes.

  123. 123 Josh

Chris: Any guesses as to whether Hamonic signs an ATO with Bridgeport?

  124. 124 islandersny

CB I am worried that we might just drop out of the top 2 spots, because it looks like the yotes are not going to win another game, do you think we will end up in the 1 or 2 slot. It does not look good to me.

  125. 125 Tond

Tavares was the supposed to be the clear cut number 1 overall pick in the last draft..and his people were trying to make hime eligable but his birthday fell to late…he and hedman are head and shoulders over stamkos..we need goals but by no means do we lose if hedman puts on our colors.

  126. 126 Isle_in_LA

All of those come from behind losses back in October are going to play a big role in where we finish in the standings. There were at least 3 or 4 games that we should have had points in. The Tavheduch race would be a lot closer…

  127. 127 isles316

    Park it!

  128. 128 mtang

CB…can you comment on the following?
    1. Did you hear about Gordon referring to the trade as “getting rid of some bad apples.”? Even though it might be true, it’s still classless.
    2. Comeau has made more nice passes that resulted in goals than Bailey?

    (123) Josh: Hamonic’s WHL season is over. He will be back in the WHL next season. There is a chance he can be signed to a ATO for Bridgeport to play some games this year. Now that his season is over that’s probably being talked about over the next few days…CB

  130. 130 jay dugan

mtang I agree that Comeau has made more nice passes that resulted in goals than Bailey but that is more of a finishing issue I think.

  131. 131 19 Isle in NJ 22

The key about Streit … as of today he’s already beat Comrie’s numbers from last year…. and looks like he’s going to be chasing KO for leading goal scorer … which doesn’t say much for our forwards … yeah … I know … Guerin only played part of the season.

  132. 132 Devon

    BREAK UP THE ISLANDERS!

  133. 133 isles99

ich iiebe mark streit! mark streit ist fantastisch! whata player!

  134. 134 7th Woman

what an amazing fake bry Bruno for Streit to blow it by Khabibulin!!!

  135. 135 Isle_in_LA

The battle of two young teams is being won by the “lowly” Isles:)

  136. 136 19 Isle in NJ 22

This was supposed to be the road trip that sealed last place … LOL!! Nah Uh!! Keep dreamin’ … these guys have other ideas.

  137. 137 Joe

Wow, the powerplay is sick today.

  138. 138 Obs

OMG, Another Isles win on the way? I told ya these kids would play hard to get Mannino his 1st win.

  139. 139 Rob

Apparently Streit wants a young Sweedish Defense partner in the near future….

  140. 140 isles99

aside from mike green, streit is the points per game d-man in the league

  141. 141 Michael

give rechlicz some minutes hes not going to progress much playing 3 minutes a game

  142. 142 michael

isle in nj, i thought the same thing! if starting the goalie 4 back on your depth chart cant get you a loss on the road i dont know what other tricks we might have in our sleeves.. we’ll probably pick 5th again. i mean fifth, for the 1st time.

  143. 143 Lawrence Teller

    CB,

If and when the vintage look unis becomes the home digs, I am assuming the road whites would be a reverse of the same look?

  144. 144 Lovin Lethbridge

CB - Any word on Petrov for next season? Is he playing few minutes in the KHL again next year?

  145. 145 JOE RVC

    lets not loose tavares

  146. 146 Joe

Why does Tambellini constantly take late game penalties

  147. 147 Jimmy Sparx

5 on 3……… this could be it!!!!!

  148. 148 Brooks Simpson

    6 on 3 … cool!

  149. 149 Jimmy Sparx

    Nothing Petey could do there.

  150. 150 nyislanders93

Wow I expected more from this Chicago Blackhawks team. I guess they came out thinking it would be an easy win for them.

  151. 151 Willis

Good job Isles, and it turned out to be a fun (last half of a ) game after all!

  152. 152 19 Isle in NJ 22

You gotta think that teams would know the book on the Isles now is that they just can’t show up and take 2 points … these guys are pros and have more to play for .. The Isles have been playing well for almost a solid 2 months now. Just shows how horrible they were in that December through January stretch.

  153. 153 d-man

chicago announcers are really enjoying poking fun at the no names on the islanders

  154. 154 patrick

    worthless wins

  155. 155 MT

    Good for Peter!

  156. 156 19 Isle in NJ 22

Ya know what is great about the Isles’ response to losing in Boston … they came out … and weathered a barrage of shots against (ok perimeter shots too) … and in the Hawks’ own house … really took over the game without getting many shots on goal … Petey better get 1st star.

  157. 157 Jimmy Sparx

    Patrick #154——-

No such thing as worthless wins. These kids are growing up together and are learning to win with each other. This will carry over to next season.

  158. 158 admin

    (143) Mr. Teller: hope to have answers for you in my post tomorrow…CB

  159. 159 patrick

    jimmy,

that’s good because they won’t have one of the top 2 kids in the draft to play with them

  160. 160 Jimmy Sparx

The Isles will still get #1 or #2 :)

  161. 161 Macch

I want JT or Hedman just as much as anyone, but these wins are not meaningless. Look at the box score. KO 2 assists, Comeau 2 assists, Streit 2 goals 1 assist. These are integral parts of our future and if they are the ones playing well than good for them. They need confidence too. Hedman or JT will not save this franchise

  162. 162 Jimmy Sparx

    Macch—–

JT or Hedman will help make the climb that much easier though.

  163. 163 bergie20

well that was a suprise. it doesn’t help us in the tavheduch watch but it was real nice seeing streit dominate and mannino look great in his first start.

  164. 164 Dave

OK, lets give Streit some rest now, like for the rest of the season. He is single-handedly going to cost us Tavares. Call it a lower-body injury or something. He doesn’t need the time for development.

  165. 165 19 Isle in NJ 22

Mannino 1st Star in first Start … way to gooooo!!! What are we going to do with all this goaltending talent LOL!! ;)

Well … I’m outtie … catch up with IPB later.

  166. 166 Macch

    Jimmy —

I agree but you still need good secondary scoring. You need the Neilsens and Comeaus of the team to play well though. Its not like its just Hilbert, Park McAmmond and the grinders on the score sheet. The kids are growing right in front of our eyes

  167. 167 Chickendirt

Feels great when you make a good team look really bad.

Shame on the BH for not being able to score on a 2.5 minute 5 on 3. They definitly deserved to lose this one.

Streit with another monster game as well as Okposo.

Baily needs to put on some weight in the offseason. He just gets hounded off the puck too easily at time. Needs a little more muscle on him to create his own room.

Otherwise good stuff. Great recovery from a really rough game yesterday.

  168. 168 patrick

these games on the road are a must lose to get one of the top 2 guys. its great to see the kids play well but if they dont get JT or Hedman its a disaster because they shouldn’t be this bad again for a long time to get the top pick

not to mention what free agents are going to sign with them?

  169. 169 Pat

We could afford to win today - and once we went up 4-1 - I changed my tune and enjoyed the rest of the game. However, except for the Mannino family ( and HOW GREAT It must have been for Mrs. and Mr. Mannino to be there in person !! and of course for Peter) - this game will be forgotten about in about 20 mins.

Now of course - if Tampa, Atlanta, Colorado and Phoenix go on win streaks of their own - no worries. BUT - we have to keep the eye on the prize. No one can say we tanked. Nor is ATL for sure !

Tavares is the prize - not winning some game that means diddly squat on “house money”……but now we sit and hope that ATL and TPA win some. They play each other later in the week - so one of them will pick up two points for that game. Let’s hope its in OT !

  170. 170 Leviticus

Some of you are rediculous. No professional team goes out to lose games. We are playing hard and growing together. And, despite the arm chair scouts who NEVER saw JT in person, no one… Repeat no one expects him to be Crosby or Overchkin. Why don’t the scouting geniuses and wannabe GM’s just root for your team and let the pros handle the draft…looks pretty good from 06-08.

  171. 171 Neil

The stat on MSG Plus was incorrect. DP did not win his NHL debut. The game he won in Minn was not his debut. His debut I belkiev was a loss in early 2001. But Wade Dubielewicz did win his 1st NHL start in the spring of 2004.

  172. 172 hack

DP lost his debut, it was a 2-1 loss to the sabres, i was there, dont remember the date tho

  173. 173 mapisles2025

dipietros first game was a 2-1 loss to buffalo

  174. 174 dally mac

Chicago didn’t want to get thier hands dirty tonight. Besides trying to avoid losing home ice advantage to Vancouver they might feel they have little else to worry about. Montreal and Chi-town should be ashamed of their performacnes against the Islanders. That game against TB

  175. 175 dally mac

is a big game…must lose really against Tampa Bay

  176. 176 Matt

Comment 170. Actually tsn and hockey news have both said on different occasions he MAY have as much of an impact as Crosby and as far as leaving drafting to the pros I guess we will see. I do agree with you on the losing game comment. No team is going to “tank” it. There are just too many people that have to be on the same page besides the fact that no PROFESSIONAL would ever do that. I still hope we do get a shot at Taveras though whether he is the next Crosby or not!

  177. 177 admin

    (144) Last I heard, he’s not coming anytime soon. Nothing positive to report with him…CB

  178. 178 Matt

CB, Is that because of his(Petrov) play, health, contract, or just because he doesn’t want to?

  179. 179 jason34

Come on now, we all know the only reason Mannino had a good game is because the Isles have nothing to lose and the teams they’re playing have everything to lose right everyone? None on the Islander players are any good and the only reason they’re winning is because all of the playoff teams who are trying to get in and hold a position have too much to play for. At least that’s what some people are telling us we should believe. On another note, Gordon and especially Mark Streit are the best thing that ever happened to Gervais. Also another ticky tack penalty call on him when he was on the side of a player and grazed the players knees with his stick! How is that hooking?

  180. 180 Blizzard

Great game today. How about the system!? I dont hear too much grumbling about it now. Nielsen continous to impress me. Nice first NHL game for Maninno. Seems in the beginning of the season The Islanders would start strong and fade, now it seems the opposite. Screw the first pick, its all about winning hockey games and the kids are getting it done.

  181. 181 jason34

I guess I’m the only one who’s sick of hearing fans whine about the possibility of not landing J.T.? It’s getting really old and if you think that winning games right now is meaningless than you’re missing the big picture. Learning how to win games is exactly what we want these young kids to do. Stop rooting for some kid who isn’t on the team and start rooting for your team. Stop sticking up for Campoli and Comrie and putting down your own coach. So basically what I’m saying is, stop acting like typical Islander fans.

  182. 182 nyislanders93

jason34- Explain to me the purpose of winning games and coming out of last overall place. Compare that to what it would be like if the Islanders draft a franchise player like John Tavares or Victor Hedman. The only good part about winning right now is Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen, Blake Comeau, and Josh Bailey getting experience in the NHL and getting good ice time. They are getting the experience and the ice time whether the team wins or loses. Rooting against the team is doing no harm in a year where the playoffs are impossible. You are obviously one of those people who would rather finish 9th in the conference rather than 15th.

  183. 183 jon

    nyislanders93–

agreeed. i dont expect the team to go out to lose, but we need to see the big picture here. after this trying season, not getting tavares or hedman would be utterly devastating and humiliating (and probably fit nicely with our team’s recent history).

  184. 184 Rob

i agree with Islanders93 - while this team is NOW playing well - you judge a team over an 82 game season - and this is just a good stretch - looking at our organeyezational depth chart - how could you root against heading that list next year with a John Tavares - all so that we get some wins that no one will EVER remember after April? I’m pretty sure that if KO or Bergy or any of the young kids turn out to be an all star it wont be attributed to a hot stretch of meaningless games in March - THe prize at the end of the season is Tavares or Hedman - keep it in sight

  185. 185 Jimmy Sparx

    EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!

This team will finish in last place.

  186. 186 Jim

How do you lose something that you never had?

Second, how is losing two players that have never played in the NHL and therefore nobody has any clue as to whether they’ll be any good be devastating?

  187. 187 Nova Scotia Isles Fan

    Number of comments.

    1. What was Rechlicz doing on the ice with 5 minutes left? I was actually a bit embarrassed by the way he was gooning around in the first period looking fro a fight.

    2. Mannino played an incredible game. For those of us wondering why he got the start, that should be answer enough. Assuming RickyD is back in the fall and 100% healthy, we will need someone competent to play 25-35 games. Joey Mac has struggled in the second half. We are all talking like Danis will be around, but he IS a FA this summer and he seems likely to have earned a contract but we don’t know where. Someone might want to give him a contract as a starter somewhere.

    3. I watched the game on the Chicago WGN station and they pointed out that Mannino was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan and his parents and family were at the game. This could very well be the reason he started in Chicago.

    4. Great effort by the team, including, scratch that, especially Mannino. Amazing effort on the long 5 on 3 near the end.

    5. Ain’t Streit amazing? What a pickup. Poster boy for the “Garth Snow actually does know what he’s doing” Fan CLub.

  188. 188 Matt

Ricky won his first game in Edmonton.

  189. 189 Alex

CB- Any word on Hedman’s character? It seems like most hockey media outlets have focused plenty on Tavares, his hustle, and on his leadership qualities this year, while we have not heard much about Hedman besides his poor WJC performance. Lots of people on here think the Isles would go for Hedman based on a positional need, but as we saw last year, the Isles place a lot of importance on a player’s character and leadership potential. Could this affect the Isles’ draft day decision of either steering clear of Hedman or going for him over J.T.?

    Happy Selection Sunday

  190. 190 Mike

All this talk about whether or not the team is or should tank the season is ridiculous. Have any of you arm-chair generals ever played a sport on a competitive level? Can you honestly tell me you, once, in your whole life of playing went out with the purpose of losing?

I play hockey 2-3 times a week and I can tell you the thought of losing on purpose has never entered my mind. I’ve never even heard of someone doing that and I can’t even fathom it at MY LEVEL.

Now take it up many, many notches, to the pros. These guys are super competitive professional athletes. You don’t get to that level by not wanting to win, ALWAYS. It just isn’t in your makeup to go out and tank. Sure the GM and coach could make moves to help the losing such as playing crappy players, etc but lets talk about who is on the ice.

Isles fans, have some freaking pride in what these kids are doing. Sure, I’d love to see the Isles finish in last so we can get Tavares but I’ve loved watching the young guys develop right before my eyes over the course of this season.

Developing a winning culture is not worthless.

  191. 191 Chris M

10 points in the last 8 games for Blake Comeau

  192. 192 Matt

Comeau has been playing really well. Always had faith in him. He also has been playing with an edge lately as well.

  193. 193 Tom

GOT TO bench mannino. He played very well. Can’t have that. Tanking is the #1 priority.

  194. 194 joebrain

Why are they only playing Hillen 12-13 minutes per game? I thought they were trying to develop him. At this pace, he would be better off in Bridgeport. Pock is getting less than 10 per game, so I assume he is gone.

  195. 195 Mike

What’s with these kids. Very solid win. Just saw the highlights of the game, and it was great to see Peter’s parents in the crowd and to see their emotion for their son. That’s cool. Makes me worried for getting Taveres, but it is nice to see that maybe the kids arte getting the system.

  196. 196 valentino

Missing out on Tavares after having been in last place for as long as we have would be just another MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT FOR THIS FRANCHISE

  197. 197 The Real Vukota

Even if they finsih dead last there is no guarantee we will get JT. If the second to last team wins the lottery all the people who are crying now about winning, will be the ones crying later saying we should have won one more game. AND YOU KNOW THAT’S THE TRUTH!!!!!

  198. 198 patrick

the truth is if we finish last we get one of the clearly best two players

  199. 199 Chris TMC

CB: “Talk about the game here. The lottery and draft in next thread.”

    I wish.

Regarding all the Tavares talk here: Like it or not there are some of us who are happy to see this team playing well. All the complaining does not represent all of us. Some of us are not into being losers. Thankfully, that also includes the players on the ice. :D

Besides- the Islanders are NOT going to finish out of the bottom 3- in order to do so they would have to lose three or less games from now to the end of the season. If they go 500 from now on they have more than a 90% chance of finishing last overall. Cant you tank talkers just be happy enough with that?

But even if that wasnt the case (though it is lol) how does insisting that every single conversation about this team turn into complaining about winning and wanting the team to be losers help ANYTHING??? I really dont get that part.

  200. 200 Spinner9

Mike (#190): I couldn’t agree more with you. To me the thought of tanking is ridiculous. The goal for all of us in all the games we played throughout our lives is to win. I’ve said it before, as a fan I cannot root for my team to lose. So while I alway root for victory for the Isles at this point of the season I’m also rooting for TB, ATL and the other teams close to the Isles to win as well. I’ve been a fan of this team since their expansion season so I’ve been around for awhile and the only thing I can tell you for sure is there are no guarentees. Draft choices do and do not pan out, players get serious injuries, develop personal problems, etc. So, while I’d love to have the top draft choice I will never root for a loss because nothing is guarenteed. And one final thing…..what the @#$@$% does it matter, those of you rooting for loses doesn’t change any actual outcomes of the games anymore than my rooting for victories. The only difference is that I can actually derive some pleasure out of a game like today. Lets go Isles.

  201. 201 Matt

I am real happy with the young guys play of late.

Streit = one of the best free agent signings last summer!

  202. 202 Swan

Mike (#190) great comments and I completely agree. Root for wins and hope for the best.

“Fans” (not really) who root for the Team to lose obviously never played competitive sports and don’t get how a developing a losing attitude is a lasting damage that cannot be switched off just because a 18 yr old kid comes to town. They are also too young and don’t remember that a #1 franchise pick doesn’t guarantee a healthy, winning Islanders team (DiPietro).

I’m definitely hoping for Taveres. Still won’t root for Team to lose.

  203. 203 dalcy

maybe they should have dealt Comrie, Campoli and Guerin earlier. unreal.

  204. 204 Coach B

    Tanking is only fan conversation.

  205. 205 Akeem

I posted this on an earlier thread: Anyone know who was the last team, in any sport, to finish last in the league and have an above .500 record at home? That could be where we’re heading this season…

  206. 206 Matt

The team is going to play the way they are going to play! Whether you root for them to lose or not is irrelevant. It would be nice to have the chance to draft Taveras but you have to love to watch the way Okposo, Neilson, Comeau, and Bergy(before his injury of course) have been playing. What agreat game this team had today. Yeah I know they aren’t playing for anything and it may mean nothing for next year but at least they are learning to win as a group. Streit has been unreal. I’ve been the biggest critic of Gervais but even I got to say he has been playing great!

  207. 207 dalcy

gervais has excelled since campoli was jettisoned. coincidence?

  208. 208 JOE RVC

can we get rid of joe mac now????

  209. 209 Larry

205, Tampa was 20-18-3 last year at home

  210. 210 nystrom23

ummm i had thought and maybe people could give a little feedback…y doesnt gordy but tim jackman in front of the net on the power play? hes one of the few guys willing to take a beating and seems to be a better skater then witt or hunter

  211. 211 FIsles

When talking about goalies, people should keep in mind that Danis’ play picked up after the team no longer had anything to lose. Good goalies separate themselves from mediocre goalies when wins and losses are important. That is not meant to discredit Danis though, but you can’t evaluate goalie talent properly if the goalie is not under pressure to win. That is why I don’t think it’s a good idea to suddenly get carried away by the supposed great goalie talent in the organ-eye.

6-2-2 in the last 10, by the way. That’s why you don’t draft after 40 games…

Another interesting statistic is that Bruno Gervais is statistically in the top 20 of defensive defenseman (of those averaging at least around 15 mins on ES per game) in the league determined by the quality of competition (i.e. who he plays against), goals against on even strength, and goals against when short-handed.

  212. 212 Gary

CB, how can you stand all of these turkeys rooting for the team to lose. Sheesh, get a life. People, if your guys tank to get a draft pick, then you’re surrounding the new player with losers. These kids are good players who will be developing confidence from the way they’ve played. That will shorten the time it takes to make a contender.

  213. 213 Will C

Lets be happy for Mannino, he just did what none of us will. Congrats, now go to Bridgeport and win a Calder!

  214. 214 eye on the island

as someone who has expressed it should be a tavares or bust season, i think it should be made clear that those of us who are in that boat are not rooting for the team to tank the season-just making sure they follow through on what they started when they only won like 5 games from thanksgiving through january. With every loss, we all still watched, some of us w/ solace of the fact that this will pay off w/ a generational type player. its not absurd to hope they lose, go ask every cavs fan four years ago and also the web’s most prominent sports writer-bill simmons of espn was openly pining for the celts to lose in order to get durant. we all want championships and hoping we lose meaningless march games does not make us any less of and islanders fan or embarrass us as fans(sorry for the lenghth)

  215. 215 Joe

Finally the NHL network acknowledged Streit should be a Norris trophy candidate!!But they also added too bad he plays for the Isles or he would have a better chance in becoming nominated!! How much better would the Isles power play be if Hedman was on the other side playing the point with Streit???? Then we can hear Sam Rosen tell us its a power play goal when they play the Rangers!! :)

  216. 216 jon from nj

    eye on the island,

thank you for echoing my sentiments exactly.

  217. 217 jay dugan

it is not that people are rooting for the team to lose I think. I think it’s just rooting for something exciting to happen. Sort of like watching the Superbowl when there are 2 teams that you really don’t give a cr*p about but you buy a “box” in the office pool and you root for a safety, field goal and a touchdown in the 2nd quater just so your “numbers come in”.
I don’t like to say I am happy for a loss but I don’t mind a loss when Comeau,Bailey,TAMBELLINI,okposo ,etc do well in a loss at this point.
I am just looking to a brighter future with as much young talent as possible.
Also, anyone else as happy as me as far as Bruno Gervais goes.He has been great since Campoli went away.I hope he keeps it up.

  218. 218 Dave

    @ #213:
What do you mean “what none of us will do”? How do you know I’m not really some superstar-in-the-making goaltender ready to break into the NHL, hm?

  219. 219 Swan

FIsles (211) great point about the difference between playing meaningful games vs meaningless ones. Every year, there is some example this. I still would pick Danis over JMac at this point, if both were available. But it is a good point. It’s one reason why I am pleased about the play of the kids, but not convinced. The real proof is how they start the season next year.

  220. 220 sydney cohen

I like that CJ - nice black and red tie! He compliments Howie and Billy and knows what us fans are asking at home!
Egg Levine… another story. LIke humptydumpty - egg story needs to fall - off the show!

  221. 221 Big Z's Slapper

Agreed that no one professional franchise would go out and tank games for draft purposes- the notion is absurd. As far as the game today goes, I am continuously impressed by the hustle and play of Okposo, Neilson, Comeau and Igguldin too. Oh, and Mark Streit is my dawg. I’m also happy for the kid goalie. Today’s game was very enjoyable. We, as fans, have a lot to look forward to- there is a lot of hope and potential w/ these young players provided they are supported by the organization in the form of solid draft picks and a few good FA signings.

  222. 222 WarrenG

Im happy for the youngsters, winning against playoff teams, making it hard to not like winning. I want Tavares badly, but i really really want this team to gel for next year and years to come. Hope Bergie gets better fast, love his hustle, and damm, could STREIT be the best FA signing this team has had in YEARS!!! Love him, love his shot, and damm was soo routing for him to get the trick tonight. I want the #1, last place, but i will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER ROUT AGAINST the ISLANDERS!!!

  223. 223 dedshark

    (222) We all want a really high pick. Its so hard to not want them to win. They look fantastic really. A compromise to myself was, if they lose (which i wont be mad about) i just want losses but in high scoring games so I can actualyl watch the young kids succeed.

  224. 224 WarrenG

223, i agree, i dont want blowouts, i want hard fought games. I dont mind if they lose, but i want them the other teams to say, O SHEIT, we are playin those ISLANDERS tonight, and they dont have anything to lose ( we know its Tavares if we win). I wont be sad when they lose, but i want them to win a few of these games left

  225. 225 Rich Pilon is an Animal

Did the wrecker not get a shift in the 3rd period?

  226. 226 Steve

Okposo had a bad night, only 2 assists. LOL!!

  227. 227 hale

to 211 danis wasn’t playing when games were important…joey mac was playing like 18 in a row..

211 and 219 — How many games did Danis get into prior to the December/January collapse? I am thinking not many.

225 — yes he was out there with 5 minutes left, looking for a fight with the team up 4-1. Thankfully, we got a bunch of penalties and the game got exciting so Coach kept him on the bench the rest io the way.

CB- How is Kurtis McLean doing? Is it long term? I know it’s tough to get answers.

You make an important point about a goalie stepping up when it counts (I think DP has this quality in him which is why I believe once healthy he will take us places).

However, your argument against Danis is ignoring the important point of an adjustment period to the NHL game. JMac, Dubie, even DiPietro needed some time to get up to NHL speed. I thought Danis looked horrible in his first starts, but then after some time he turned me. Given an equal length of time to adjust he’s just better then JMac.

One thing I’ve noticed about Okposo - and this isn’t to detract from his level of playmaking ability and control with the puck, which I think is spectacular for a kid his age - is that he seems to get knocked down to the ice a lot more frequently than most players, even those his age. He recovers quickly, so I don’t see it as a problem, per se - just an observation…

I thought Monnino looked so big and solid in net. Watching these goalies play so well makes it allot less worrisome about DP and also reminds me about how lame it is to take a goalie number 1 over all.
