JACKMAN SIGNED TO ONE-YEAR EXTENSION
Off and in-season commitment rewarded

10:25 am - Tim Jackman has been signed to a one-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season.
The Islanders have decided to reward a grinder for his exhaustive efforts to become an NHL regular and fit into the team’s system. After starting the season in Bridgeport with 6 goals in 12 games, Jackman has become a favorite of the Islanders’ coaching staff for his skating, size, grit and desire to stick up for teammates.
After practice yesterday, we asked Jackman about his improved skating. He said, “Two summers ago, I really felt I was at a crossroads. I was at the point in my career where I was either going to make the NHL or not. I decided to do everything possible to put myself in the best position to succeed. I didn’t want to have any regrets.”
Among his initiatives, Jackman hired a personal strength coach and a skating coach and spent his “offseasons” working even harder than he does during the hockey season. This morning, his efforts paid off.

wow…this will probably be the islanders biggest singing…lol…
I don’t want to sound too over-the-top, but Jackman has been almost a revelation for the Islanders this season. Tough, always in on the forecheck (testifying to his improved skating) and doesn’t take many bad penalties.
Good job by Garth to sign him.
CB - Safe to assume this is the end of the Dean McCammond era?
Good news.
Talk about a guy working his tail off every shift.
Nolan-type-player, Gordon-type-player,
any NHL head coach type player.
never under estimate the importance of role players.
Especially as they’re trying to develop stars from within.
Good signing, well earned.
Just curious…what are the merits of the 1 year deal versus say a longer 2 or 3? Could next season be another evaluation year for Jackman to see if he continues to progress (and thus is worth a larger contract)? Smart thinking in my mind. Though maybe its my biased opinion of his effort but I thought the guy showed enough to get atleast a 2 year at a low salary.
Does this mean that Hilbert is gone? Or do the Islanders plan on having 2 lines of 4th line players again next season?
this generation’s Gary Howatt
All I can say is jackman as earned it 100%, hardest working guy out there game in and out, keep up the hard work.
Nice signing. Jackman has shown a lot of heart since he has become an NHL regular. Jackman is the perfect fourth line grinder, he has no problem stepping up for teammates and can score about 10 goals a season.
Even with Jackman’s toughness, we still need to find an enforcer for this team next season. Rechlicz has been impressive, but it’s too soon to know if he is ready to stay on the team.
good job garth, jackman looks like a keeper. the guy busts it on every shift, makes smart decisions, annoys the opponent, fights, and can score a bit.
Jackman earned his place and is good at his role. Well deserved.
1 year deal for jackman is perfect….he deserves it….he works his you know what off every shift….having said that, we need to sign players who fit into what we’re doing here and not because they want to be here (weight). the ice time needs to continue to go to the youngsters. atfer all, we’re seeing them blossom right before our eyes.
He sure does work hard and I think a year is fair at this point. He also brings some needed size and helps with the sticking up for your teammates factor. Good job Tim, good job Garth.
And…hes the type of role player everytime can use
Good news. I was skeptical of Jackman at first, but he has grown on me. The guy has improved his skating tremendously, works hard on the forecheck, sticks up for his teammates, and can drop the gloves. These are the kind of guys you want on your fourth line. I’m glad he was rewarded for his hard work, and I like that Garth is taking care of these things before free agency season hits. Now go sign Dougie Weight!
The man deserves it. Hes earned it. he has proven that he is an NHL player.
An excellent signing and filled a definite need. He’s a throwback hockey player. Hopefully, he will continue to work and improve since the Isles will need him even more next season.
To me, this is another good sign that Snow really gets it.
I don’t think Jackman’s resigning really hurts McAmmond or Hilbert. Different players that do different things. It probably affects Rechlicz, McLean, Iggulden, Colliton much more.
good signing. perfect fit for the isles 4th line.
Way to go Jacko!
size SIZE WE NEED MORE!
Perfect ENERGY player!!!!
This is the kind of guy The Wrecker should sit down with and take notes.
Very similar players. 100% every shift.
That is a very good 4th line guy.
Maybe we can keep The Wrecker around and throw the two of the out there together.
I like it, Jackman has always worked hard and it shows. He’s not going to be a more than a 3rd or 4th liner, but he is a guy who will stand up and fight for his teammates without being a liability when he is on the ice, which is what every team needs to have.
Mike Brophey was talking on Sportsnet last week about NHL tough guys, and Jackman was one of his examples of a guy who is more than just a tough guy.
Congrats Jacks! You’ve earned it! Love ya!
Hope this has a positive effect on the determination of your B’port players. The NHL is attainable with some hard work.
as hard as colliton tries i really don’t think he is a nhl player
I personally rooted for Tim last year when you could see he was trying so hard but what we most often saw was him slipping and falling whenever he had a fight lol. But this year, things are different. Tims improvements are remkarkable. He still works his tail off- only now, he creates scoring opportunities… he kills penalties… he provides some real size and muscle… he doesnt put the team down a man at bad times… he just plays smart. I didnt know he was as smart of a player as he is. His skating is so much better this season as well. In todays NHL if you want toughness, its got to be packaged with some skating and some hockey sense. Tim is IMO a good example of that. But most of all, his “give it all” attitude is something Id like to bottle and give to every player that puts on this teams jersey. I love this guy and Im really happy the Isles gave him another year.
Go Tim!
CB could we get some specifics of the deal. How much are the Isles paying for jackmans services next season??
AWESOME!!! Love the signing, Garth.
Great signing..every team needs that grit Jackman brings. Good size and a bigger heart. If he got a a grand for every stitch and cut he’s had this year he’d be the highest paid player in the league. Nice job Garth.
Nice move, a good guy who looks to make his presence known and not afraid to spill a little blood, and not just his own.
The wife took our son to the team store last night to meet Andy Sutton, another good guy.
Great news. Nobody deserves it more than Tim Jackman. He has worked his tail off since his call up. A perfect guy who leads by example for all the kids on the big club as well as all the guys who know him at Bridgeport. When you look at Tim Jackman he is the living proof of all of the analogies we hear in hockey. Work hard, go to the net, get some pucks on goal and good things will happen.
Jackman does step in for his teamates. Would love to see this guy turn into a Gillies or Nystrom, a guy who can fight and score goals. We need more production from him. Hopefully next year will be the year for that. Also did you see his most recent fight in Chicago? He pummled the Blackhawk pretty good!
Jackman is a useful piece to the puzzle. Kills penalties, plays hard, not afraid to fight. Good 4th line guy.
I do think this means Hilbert does not return and Rechlicz plays at Bridgeport. And out of Park, McAmmond, and Thompson, only 2 of them can return. Since Park is signed, probably comes down to McAmmond or Thompson.
I have been saying for about 3 months that he should be on our 4th line for the next 10 years. Perfect 4th line player that all great teams need.
Well deserved. Easy to see his desire - the guy busts his butt EVERY single time he’s on the ice.
Perfect 4th line grinder. . and got to love the way he will stick up for a teammate.
very good signing. tim jackman gives 110% every game. congrats to him on earning it and good job by garth snow.
I like the signing for 1 season. Allows the Islanders to see if Jackman continues his improved play into next season. If he continues to improve, watch the Islanders give him a 2 year extension next season.
great signing. I would of try to get him locked in for longer, I feel like he going tonly to get better with another year under his belt.
Now sign Danis.
if Hilbert doesnt resign, it makes no difference to me. He is expendable.
Jeremy Colliton does all he does and is alot better at Faceoffs.
Awesome. Is this a one-way deal?
Awesome, Congrats Tim.
In Jackman’s first few games he was almost a completely different player. I rememebr saying, “Holy mother of Scotty Bowman, what happened to Jackman”. He hasn’t let off the gas all season and he proved that he is a legit NHL player. Congrats!
Next year’s fourth line s/b (IMHO) Wrecker-Colliton-Jackman. Colliton and Jackman can both PK, and all three won’t have a problem with a regular shift.
I don’t mean any disrespect to Andy, but Hilbert has so that both parties can improve. The team needs to get bigger, and Hilbert will enter the UFA market as an important role player, possibly for a team that only needs a few more pieces.
I like this move. talent is talent, but you also need guys like jackman. good signing
Great move. I really thought for sure we would blow it on him and let him walk. Lunch will taste a little better today.
Wow, what a good day! Next it’ll be reported the Islanders will try to field an NHL team next year. Wow.
I must control my emotion to get too happy though. Garth will indeed trade down 4x to take the player he “always wanted” I must be ready for that!
Woopie!
Maybe it is me, but he always seems to lose the fights not win them.
I’m glad they re-signed Jackman. He’s a good guy to have on the roster. But I think this has to mean that some other guys (Hilbert, Sim, McAmmond, etc.) are going to be out of a job around here next season.
We have to remember that Tampa had Vinny & St Louis, and still finished last, Yeah a Taveres will help, but better still a team that works hard together will go places, Jackman would be a Pc of that puzzle, That said, lets go ATL, TAMP, And the AVS!!!!
#12 - What makes you think Weight doesn’t fit into what the Islanders are trying to do. He’s proved he can still play, he fits the system, he’s one of the classiest guys in the league and he wants to stay. I’m glad you’re not the GM around here.
As for Tim Jackman, I hope his contract extension is a one way NHL deal. He’s earned it. Congrats to him.
jackman is important to this team the same way eric cairns was. he sticks up for his mates no matter what, they love him for it, and he fills his role without being an idiot who spends more time in the box than on the ice and bench. also, he makes stuff happen around the net.
good character signing by snow.
Like I said last week Priority of UFAs on isles
Danis still #1. Jackman was my second guy and Hilbert is seem we are all in agreement is expendable.
Hilbert blows too many chances on offense and is best when killing penalties. We already have Park, Thompson, Jackman and McCammond for that right now. Colliton is ready for NHL and can be huge boast for us on Faceoffs.
Colliton in few games he played last year was top 5 in NHL in faceoff%
A guy who drops the gloves and can kill penalties! Actually a valuable commodity.
No reason to sign 4th line guys long term though….a solid move.
Great news. He has earned this with his hard work. He comes to play every game. I hope he continues to improve and that we keep him even longer.
Another smart move by Snow. Are we starting to see our gm mature before our very eyes? He’s made some good moves lately and I only hope he continues to improve his managing abilities and the team.
I like this signing. Savvy on Snow’s part to give one more year to see how he develops, and beneficial on Jackman’s part because it gives him another shot to show he can take it to the next level. I see him being a fourth line player, but also putting in about 10 goals a year. I would love to see Rechlicz and Jackman together with McAmmond as their center next year. I think that would be a great fourth line that could contribute all around. I think Hilbert may become expendable and Park could join a third line featuring Hunter and Nielsen. All I know is, Garth has a lot of thinking to do considering the abundance of players we have coming through the ranks, Weight, McAmmond, and this upcoming draft! This is a huge swing year for the Islanders rebuild.
Aw jeez, they’ve been playing almost WELL lately. God, they’re scoring. Oh boy, now they’re signing bigger players. MUST. NOT. SMILE.
Thank you Garth… Jackman has quickly become one of my favorite islanders.
No brainer signing here. He is by far the most improved Isle. Gotta love the “Jack”. Busts his butt and stands up to everyone. Guy you can’t help but love to have on your team and root for. Great effort Tim. Congrats.
#6 what does Jackmans signing have to do with Hilbert? They play on the same line.
People forget that Jackman was a second round pick in the NHL Entry Draft (Columbus) So, its not out of the realm of thinking that he could make it in the NHL. A good example to those who are currently toiling in Bridgeport - this contract makes a tangible statement to the Collitons, the Wreckers, the Igguldens, the Smiths, The others that hard work at the AHL level - which is followed by more at the NHL level - will pay off.
The one year commitment protects us from a “Mark Lawrence” situation. Jackman is better than Steve Webb and Kevin Colley - two other “within the ranks promotions” that made me smile in years past.
This one makes me happy as well. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming
Pat
Lorne (46): I think that you might be thinking more of last year. Tim is top 10 in the NHL in fighting this season with 17 fights. According to hockeyfights rankings, Tim was voted to decisively win 7, lose 4, and draw 6. He has improved fighting-wise.
Wow, I’d forgotten about Kevin Colley. What a shame…
Actually #56 my emotional conscience spoke in the 2nd part of my comment.
Also please don’t change usernames, CB’s not a big fan of that. Besides, I’m not THAT important. You can insult me with your real name. I can take it, believe me, with EASE I can take criticisms.
I love this guy. I am stunned at how much better his skating and overall game has gotten this year. Congrats Timmy!! now all we need to do is give Trent your skating coach’s phone number. Ive never seen a hockey player with poorer skating ability than Trent. Love the guy, but he has to fix that fast…
As much as I disliked Jackman as a player last year because he contributed nothing other than losing every fight he was in, he has completely turned his game around this year. Much better skater, drives impressively to the net, and a MUCH better fighter than last year (I heard Fritz gave him some pointers while he was w/ the team, is that true?). I hope he works just as hard this offseason, because the way he drives to the net, I think he’d be selling himself short settling for a fourth line “energy” role rather than trying to improve to a third line “checking” role player who could chip in some goals every now and again. Glad he’ll be back.
CB, do you have any reason to believe that Hilbert and McAmmond signings are soon to follow? With Sim,Park and Jackman all on board for next year do you see a Tambellini,Neilson,Comeau and or Hunter being moved?
I feel the Isles can make more of a splash via trade then free agency for immediate help for next year if that’ s the plan.
I would love to see the Sedin twins in Isles unis next year.I read they are asking for 6+ per.In this market that and considering the Isles needs they are the perfect match.
Well Deserved contract for Jackman - Maybe Signing Weight to a 1 year 3 mil isn’t a bad idea.
Snow should not resign:
Hilbert,McAmmond, Sillinger, Pock,
& Fritz (he should be bouncing at a Bar)
and once and for all Buy out Jon Sim
Sendin Twins are not Signing here - no big time free agents will sign with the Islanders. They just have to Build through the draft and hope they get lucky with some of their many draft picks
I’m happy for him.
Good move by the Isles, Jackman is a gritty and tough guy who gives you a honest effort, he sticks up for his teamates and shows passion. Hes 1 of the guys who i like to watch play hockey! — Sedin twins in NY? hell no, no thanks - lets get a good draft pick and rebuild for real and not simply try the ‘lets get the 8th seed attitude’ they had for 10 yrs.. REBUILD THE PROPER WAY - WE CAN WAIT ANOTHER YEAR OR 2
Great signing … keeps some size up front … and as he develops his hockey skills further and shows progress … he’s a great fit to grow with the kids… him being the elder statesman of course. Maybe Tim can pot between 5-10 goals a season? Which is significant for a grinding enforcer.
Along with his hockey skills of course we appreciate his fighting skills… not quite the heavy weight .. but has a heavy weight frame. Congrats Tim!!! We appreciate you dedication and effort .. not to mention production.
Why do some of you think this means the end of Hilbert?
I envision a 4th line of Hilbert-Park-Jackman
Why can’t that work out?
Jackman has been great this year, Park is Park, and Hilbert has really improved and grown on me. That is a very possible and very good 4th line.
this guy is great. really good signing. He reminds me of a bigger asham and you need 2-3 of these guys on the team to protect our top line of tavares okposo and comeau
I love watching a team rebuild just as much as i enjoy watching a competitive team restock. That is the nature of sport.
You guys can’t be honest with yourselves when you say for certain that a team will or will not do something,or a player will or will not do something.Let’s be realistic. In case i missed something outside of KO I do not see anyone else on this team that has a legit shot at being a top line player.
Isles Young players will only get better.
Nielson, Bailey will both be studs.
Comeau will can be 20G player. Tambellini Im not 100% sure but we know he has nasty shot.
Im still very suprised that colliton has not made the big club. in 2004 he was playing with Sidney Crosby adn the rest of team canada in Jr World Championships. I think he only guy not playing in NHL from that team.
I think this is a GREAT move.
In my opinion Tim Jackman is the perfect 4th line player.
He is Big, has underrated skill, can fight and is consistently one of the hardest worker on the ice.
People don’t realize this guy can actually handle the puck and put it in the net when he has to. Most importantly I believe he has the ability to matchup well against other teams fourth lines.
I would not mind if they signed him fo a while longer to be a fixture on the 4th line.
He CB, I noticed Rechlicz is listed on the Isles roster still and nothing was on the AHL transactions, is he staying up?
I dont understand the dislike for Hilbert. He’s a really good hockey player. And he may reach a career high in points this year. He is averaging .41 pts/game. (24pts in 58gms).
Besides the points, he does a million other things right..
Sim is expendable.
Very Happy for Tim, he really deserves this. Worked so hard to make himself an NHL player, and it appears he has.
It is nice to see a player get rewarded for his efforts and best of all it will only make him work harder. Great Job. also to chime in on hilber 24points is still not good, we cannot have 6 4th line players on this team, its time for him and thomson to go.
Good luck waiting on Nielson and Colliton
Good signing. Would like to see more of the Wrecker but he really needs to work on his skating this summer. He should give Jackman’s skating coach a call.
#3 - I could see the Isles potentially resigning Mcammond. He is excellent on faceoffs and would make for a fine 3rd or 4th line center.
I guess it all depends on what they do with Weight & if they are able to get Tavares. If they can’t get Tavares, then Weight-Bailey-Nielsen-Mcammond would be a fine centerman corps for this club. Guys like Park and Thompson can just play wing which they’ve done in the past. This probably means Ben Walter would have little shot at making the club, but he probably has little chance anyway.
If they do get Tavares, then there’s really no room for Mcammond because I’m pretty sure they’ll resign Doug Weight.
Good signing.
Didnt get that good luck waiting for Neilsen> as far as im concerned he has landed and only going to get better.
Colliton still hasn’t been given a chance.
Im not Hilbert bashing im just saying is he is expendable. As far as Sim goes i never want to see him another day in isles uniform. Let him play out all of next year in Bridgeport.
Think this is a great signing and shows the organization is committing itself to players who work their tails off. His play and skating have improved and I can say his fighting has improved too.
He’s not really there to take on the pure heavyweights (Godard, Orr, Brashear, Laraque) but can hold his own as a strong middleweight which is a good sign. We can then keep Rechlicz around as a healthy scratch/easy call up from the Bridge.
Good signing. The guy is always willing to stick up for his team and he has impressed me with how good is skating has improved. I still would like to see a real heavyweight fighter who can do more than just fight (unlike Fritz)
Landed? 5g 20a is the definition of landed? Hope he gets better cause supposed to be a playmaking center.
I hope I am wrong and bailey will be a top line ceneter and the Franz will be a legit #2 and Comeau will be a mike peca type player only time will tell.
My point was just because you really like a player,or you heard that he has potential, doesn’t make them a star.
Agree with all that this is a good signing. Disagree with some that Hilbert should be signed. Jackson perfect for 4th line, is the teams enforcer and can play on PK. Hilbert is good on pk and that’s about it. He has speed but no pure hockey skill. Reminds me of Jason Blake minus the goals.
Not a bad signing; he has surely earned it through effort. Probably received a one year deal due to the fact that Matt Martin will most likely be filling this role in a couple of years.
As for veterans, I like seeing the kids getting a look. Other than the D, I wouldn’t care if the isles played only players with two years or less experience the rest of the way.
Read all the replies and am thrilled not one neg comment on this signing. Shows the Isle fans have brains. Like to see the “Jack” wear a “A” next season. He was a great leader in B-Port and the Isles this year.
Jackman better than Fritz, but i would think Sugden taught him more. Fritz is really NOT a good fighter. The ONLY advantage Fritz has and usually the reason he wins any fights at all is his HUGE reach. Was NOT impressed by Fritz at all this year, I just hope this does NOT effect the Wrecker at all. I cant wait to see a line with Rechlitz and Martin, should be the return of good entertaning hockey to the Island.
“Great” job by Newsday to congragulate Tim Jackson on his new contract. Pretty bad if you ask me.
Good job, Tim. Hard work pays off. I’ll take Jackman over the Yashins, Kavshas and Satans of the world any day and twice on Sunday.
JACKMAN RULES!
