McLEAN’s INJURY: RUPTURED ACHILLES TENDON
Major setback for hard-working forward
Greg Logan reports the Islanders have announced that Kurtis McLean suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon when he was injured during a pre-game soccer warmup on March 11. I’d heard in Bridgeport on Friday from a Sound Tigers player that McLean’s injury was serious and that he could be out 6-8 months, but I held out for official confirmation. I have yet to be contacted by the Islanders with the McLean update that Greg received.
A tough setback for Kurtis, by all accounts a good man and over-achiever who made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal this season at age 28.

sigh* will the grass ever get green for Islanders fans?
-
Tough break, here’s to a speedy recovery.
-
that sucks, good luck to him on his long road to recovery
-
Un-freakin-real…
-
Too bad….he would have had a big role on the team in B-port during the Calder Cup playoffs.
-
Uggghhhhhh!!!! Poor McLean … that has to hurt BIG Time …. just knocking your Achilles hurts …. rupturing it??? YEOUCH!!
-
That is rough. Let’s hope he has a full recovery and will playing professionally next season at some point.
-
I had seriously strained my achilles and it was extremely painful. I do not even want to imagine rupturing it. No clue if McLean would’ve made the team next season, but a horrible injury either way you slice it.

(cgs878 post #1)
No offense but I disagree. (IMO) This is exactly what is wrong with the mindset of todays culture. Wait for something to go wrong and then take action. Why can’t it ever be about “rotten luck”, “accident” or “rare occurance”? Really?
This politically correct driven methodology has got to stop. What’s next? When someone sneezes while spotting a teammate bench pressing weights thereby dropping the weight and resulting in injury, will teams mandate specific antihistamines for usage during weight lifting for teams? Yes, very inane, extreme example but you get the drift.
Players have been doing this for a long time and now we get a freak accident and cannot dismiss it as such? Come on. -
What a shame! He was having a pretty good year.
-
Steve Depot#10 – I couldnt agree with you more. IMO, you hit whats wrong with today 110% !!!!
-
Stevedepot, in general I agree with you. We are far too reationary. However, this isn’t really a freak thing. It happens far too often. This is easily the worst I’ve heard of, but over the last couple seasons it seems like it has happened at least a dozen times in the NHL/OHL, and probably tonnes more in leagues that I don’t follow.
-
I just can’t understand how the tendon is ruptured by simply kicking a soccer ball around. Sounds extreme. He must have been susceptible in that area to begin with.
Quick recovery Kurt..
-
What a shame…. add that to the list. The last two years worth of injuries has been unreal. When will it stop?
-
Somebody tore their Achilles tendon the other night in Zumba class. Everyone started telling stories of someone else who did the same thing at the most random times, point being ya just never know when its going to happen.
Good luck to McLean with his lengthy rehab and maybe we’ll see him in 2 yrs. -
Fornabaio with the Soundtigers had this on Sunday – Logan probably got it from him…..
-
(stevedepot #10) – I am surprised that owners and GMs allow their “employees” to do something like pre-game soccer kick-a-rounds. I am also surprised that knowledgable, professional athletes would do something that could possibly cause themselves injury, and thus loss of ice time. One wrong twist or fall could make a player useless for months. It’s one thing to get injured during a game, when you’re earning your money. It’s quite another to get injured off the ice by your own hand (or foot).
Yes, it was unfortunate. McLean has rotten luck. It was a freak accident. However, it was totally preventable.
-
Unofrtunate, yes. Freakish, yes. Reason to avoid a good warmup exercise, no. These injuries happen to everybody in the weirdest ways. Misty May-Treanor tore hers warming up for Dancing with the Stars. Not something to get worked up about.
-
cgs, understood.
“totally preventable”?
Then we’d have people calling for the termination of pregame yoga, hallway sprints, meditiation, situps, pushups and break dancing. Seriously…
But where do you draw the line? Does EVERY pregame warmup routine have to be approved by a commission now? Will players not be allowed to play table tennis with their kids in the off season because they may twist an ankle (since they’re employees?) What about a strength and conditioning program where they may injure a groin? (and it has happened). Look, I don’t want to argue, for me, the bottom line here is this…get well soon Kurtis.
This other stuff we can agree to disagree on. -
I agree with stevedepot. Are they gonna bug guys houses and spy on them to make sure that their wives dont have them moving boxes in the garage in case they hurt themselves? I mean, where does concern end and paranoia begin? You cannot expect any organization to regulate every frickin thing a guy does, it is simply not reality. McLean wasnt cliff diving or filling in as a stunt driver, he was just kicking a frickin soccer ball around. Its the kind of thing that normal people do every single day.
-
if he ruptured his Achilles tendon just from kicking hte ball around trust me it would of happpend on the ice too.
when guys mess around kicking soccer ball its pretty friendly volleying of soccer ball . alot of teams do it.
Doesnt makes sense how you can get so injured.
-
I know I’m gonna get heat for this, but I never feel sorry for someone that gets hurt doing something stupid, like a bank robber who breaks his leg making his getaway, or a hockey player who gets injured kicking a soccer ball around before a game.
-
Nice article on Doug Weight on NHL.com.. (ripped off from CB)
-
you cant let a guy like tavares slip by you bergie they already messed up when the drafted dp and traded luongo when they really could be a cup contending team if they didnt make the stupid trades and ownership decisions
-
An achilles rupture is an injury that really can happen at any time, doing something as simple as stepping off a stair. And from what I understand, McLean hadn’t even gotten to touch the ball yet. Mike Forniabo has an article about it on the Connecticut Post site – he also has a link to the story in his blog.
Tough break for a guy who was having a pretty good season, best wishes for a speedy recovery.
-
*sorry, Fornabaio
-
#20 & 21 – I get your points. You can’t prevent all injuries. Only Kurtis knows how he did it.
I wish Mr. McLean a speedy recovery.
-
The Islanders better impliment a new conditioning regiment. This has been rediculous since last season when the season was ruined by injuries. This year is more of the same.
-
Hey CB – You got a plug on NHL.com…

get well soon kurtis! hope he’s back playing next season.

Let all other teams sit up and take notice… the pregame soccer kick-around should be abolished! Let the guys get loose some other way that’s not going to accidentally cause a 6-8 month rehab. Yikes.
